OM DENNE EPISODE
In this episode of the Identify Podcast, host Justin Starbird welcomes Olaf Wilmsmeier, an expert in railway industry applications from FEIG Electronics, to explore the real-world applications of RFID technology in the rail sector. Building on previous discussions about the fundamentals of RFID in railway settings and the specific demands placed on readers and antennas, Olaf shares fascinating use cases and practical experiences.
Discover how RFID can play a crucial role in reducing the noise generated by streetcars and simultaneously protect the wear and tear on both the vehicles and the tracks through precisely triggered lubrication systems. Olaf explains the benefits of utilizing RFID for accurate train positioning, particularly in complex environments such as tunnels and dense urban areas, presenting a reliable and cost-effective alternative to GPS for applications like the automated control of pantographs on electric trains.
Furthermore, Justin and Olaf discuss how RFID technology can be integrated with traditional signaling systems to improve efficiency and offer a budget-friendly way to modernize existing infrastructure. They also explore how RFID can be implemented along the tracks to identify passing trains and their components, leading to significant gains in efficiency within maintenance operations. Tune in for an insightful discussion that uncovers the tangible advantages and exciting potential of RFID in today's railway industry.
