OM DENNE EPISODE
You snap at your partner over nothing, or fire off the text you regret an hour later. In this Office Hours I answer a question I get a lot: how do I stop being so reactive?
An emotion is a messenger. It's a temporary signal about what's happening and what you care about. Imagine someone pressing a knife to your arm. Pull away slowly and you're fine. Yank back and you cut yourself. Most reactivity is the yank. In this episode I break down what emotions actually do for you, why they're so hard to regulate (skills, mood, rumination, and being hungry or tired), and the trap of treating a strong feeling like a fact about the world. This is part one. Part two covers how to regulate them.
Expect to learn:
- What an emotion actually is and why you have one every hour of the day
- The four goals of regulating emotions
- Why reacting harder makes the pain worse
- How emotions prepare you to act, communicate to others and speak to you
- Why the strength of a feeling isn't proof that it's true
- The Rep: name one emotion out loud each day this week
