OM DENNE EPISODE
Adam sits down with old friend David Gueriera, an actor he first met during his Santa Monica and Venice Beach years, to talk honestly about addiction and recovery. David is coming up on three years alcohol free.
David shares how a functioning addiction to alcohol and other drugs got worse during the pandemic, the eviction notice that finally woke him up, detox, relapse, and what it took to get sober for good. He talks about finding a secular AA group online, why giving up drinking felt like ending the hardest relationship of his life, and how stoic philosophy, yoga, theater and the cold plunge keep him grounded now.
In this episode:
- Why it's so hard to see a drinking problem from the inside, and why other people usually notice first
- "It's hard to be a very honest alcoholic": honesty as a test
- Loneliness in a crowd, and why nobody can do it for you but you don't have to do it alone
- Rejoining a society you're not sure you want to rejoin
- Building habits with no willpower required: show up first, and commit for just two weeks
- Cravings three years in: "I might drink again, but it's not gonna be today"
Book mentioned: Conscious Recovery by T.J. Woodward.
