OM DENNE EPISODE
🎧 Episode 196: How to Take Creative Control of Your Own Life, with Chelsea Clarke (Part 1)
In Part 1 of this grounded and honest conversation, I’m joined by digital entrepreneur, investor, and author Chelsea Clarke for a real look at what reinvention actually requires…not in theory, but in real life.
Chelsea takes us back to the early chapter of her story…graduating from university without a plan, working multiple jobs just to get by, feeling discouraged about money, and trying to find her footing in a season that felt anything but clear. When pregnancy became the moment that forced her to take a hard look at her future, everything shifted.
This episode isn’t about overnight success or a perfectly packaged glow-up. It’s about the slow, intentional work of shedding old habits, releasing shame around past versions of yourself, and building trust with yourself one choice at a time.
Together, we explore how identity-based change creates lasting transformation…and why habits, mindset, and self-belief are the true foundation of growth.
Chelsea shares insights on:
• Why failure isn’t something to avoid…but something to learn from
• How habit stacking creates momentum without overwhelm
• Letting go of old versions of yourself with compassion, not criticism
• The power of identity-based change versus relying on willpower alone
• How small, consistent habits quietly reshape confidence and self-trust
• Why honoring who you were is just as important as becoming who you’re meant to be
🔑 Key takeaways:
Reinvention happens through repetition, not perfection
Habits shape identity…and identity shapes outcomes
Self-trust is built by keeping small promises to yourself
Failure is a teacher, not a verdict
Growth begins when you stop shaming the past and start honoring it
💡 Quotes to remember:
“Failure isn’t a dead end…it’s a learning opportunity.”
“You don’t need to hate who you were to become who you’re meant to be.”
“Small habits, repeated consistently, change everything.”
If you’re in a season of transition…
If you’re quietly questioning whether the life you’re living still fits…
If you know you’re meant for more but aren’t sure where to begin…
This episode will remind you that reinvention doesn’t require a dramatic leap…just the courage to take the next honest step.
Part 1 lays the foundation.
Part 2 is where we step fully into self-reliance, wealth mindset, and becoming the creative director of your own life.

00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:05.200
Script out the version of your life that you want to create, writing it pen to paper.
00:00:05.360 --> 00:00:08.960
Scripting is a really powerful manifestation technique.
00:00:09.119 --> 00:00:12.240
When you're writing something out, you are creating it.
00:00:12.400 --> 00:00:15.359
You are creating that potential future for yourself.
00:00:15.519 --> 00:00:23.199
It's like a timeline that you are literally designing, and it's an opportunity for you to go that path.
00:00:28.160 --> 00:00:35.200
Welcome to Evoke Greatness, the podcast for bold leaders and big dreamers who refuse to settle.
00:00:35.439 --> 00:00:36.799
I'm your host, Sonny.
00:00:36.960 --> 00:00:43.520
I started in Scrubs over 20 years ago, doing the gritty, unseen work and climbed my way to CEO.
00:00:43.759 --> 00:00:47.200
Every rung of that ladder taught me something worth passing on.
00:00:47.439 --> 00:00:51.840
Lessons in leadership, resilience, and what it really takes to rise.
00:00:52.079 --> 00:00:58.960
You'll hear raw conversations, unfiltered truths, and the kind of wisdom that ignites something deeper in you.
00:00:59.200 --> 00:01:01.840
Your courage, your conviction, your calling.
00:01:02.079 --> 00:01:08.079
This show will help you think bigger, lead better, and show up bolder in every part of your life.
00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:10.239
This is your place to grow.
00:01:10.480 --> 00:01:12.560
Let's rise together.
00:01:21.840 --> 00:01:28.239
What if the version of you you're becoming isn't found by doing more, but by shedding what no longer fits?
00:01:28.480 --> 00:01:38.239
In today's episode, Chelsea Clark shares how she rebuilt her life after setbacks by changing her habits, her identity, and her relationship with failure.
00:01:38.560 --> 00:01:41.200
This is Reinvention Without the Fluff.
00:01:41.359 --> 00:01:42.159
Let's hop into it.
00:01:42.400 --> 00:01:44.719
Welcome back to another episode of About Greatness.
00:01:44.799 --> 00:01:50.959
Today's guest is Chelsea Clark, a self-made digital entrepreneur, investor, and the founder of her paper route.
00:01:51.200 --> 00:01:57.680
Once a broke bartender during the 2008 recession, secretly living in an office building, Chelsea rewrote her story.
00:01:57.840 --> 00:02:08.719
Through grit, self-reliance, and unshakable persistence, she turned her laptop into a life-changing business that has helped thousands of women build, scale, and even sell online businesses.
00:02:08.879 --> 00:02:20.800
Chelsea's the author of Glow Up Yourself, described as a reinvention playbook for rebellious women ready to rebuild their identity, income, habits, mindset, and inner peace after failure or a setback.
00:02:21.120 --> 00:02:26.400
On today's episode, we're going to deep dive into how to become the creative director of your own life.
00:02:26.560 --> 00:02:37.439
We will explore how to glow up from setbacks, build habits for new wealth, create a mindset of self-reliance, and design a life aligned with your highest goals, even when we start from nothing.
00:02:37.599 --> 00:02:43.120
So get ready for raw honesty, tactical strategies, and inspiring truths about transformation.
00:02:43.439 --> 00:02:44.560
Chelsea, welcome to the show.
00:02:44.800 --> 00:02:46.159
Thank you so much for having me.
00:02:46.319 --> 00:02:48.560
I'm excited to have this conversation with you.
00:02:48.800 --> 00:02:49.840
Yes, likewise.
00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:53.599
Well, I always like to kind of go backwards before we go forwards a little bit.
00:02:53.680 --> 00:02:59.439
And so before we dive into reinvention and glowing up, can you take us back to the beginning?
00:02:59.599 --> 00:03:03.199
What was it like for you before her paper route?
00:03:03.360 --> 00:03:08.800
And what was that turning point that really pushed you toward becoming this current version of yourself?
00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:15.680
Well, after university, I was making all the mistakes that a young person does.
00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:19.280
And I was really, I wasn't, I didn't have a budget.
00:03:19.439 --> 00:03:21.599
I was not keeping track of my spending.
00:03:21.759 --> 00:03:23.360
I was feeling a little bit hopeless.
00:03:23.520 --> 00:03:24.960
It was very hard to find a job at the time.
00:03:25.039 --> 00:03:29.919
And I was a little bit poo-pooing down on myself that I couldn't get a job with my degree.
00:03:30.159 --> 00:03:36.960
And so I was taking on all of these side gigs and waitressing and just doing that grind.
00:03:37.199 --> 00:03:42.240
And I realized that this was not a sustainable way for me to continue on.
00:03:42.319 --> 00:03:43.840
It wasn't going to get me ahead.
00:03:44.080 --> 00:03:45.199
I needed to have a plan.
00:03:45.360 --> 00:03:46.960
I needed to have some goals.
00:03:47.280 --> 00:03:57.199
And a couple years of trying to figure things out, like starting up different businesses, starting with uh drop shipping and trying all these different online things, and nothing was really sticking.
00:03:57.360 --> 00:03:58.639
And then I got pregnant.
00:03:58.800 --> 00:04:04.240
And then I had to really make a serious plan because it wasn't just me anymore.
00:04:04.400 --> 00:04:07.199
I had to be responsible for a tiny human.
00:04:07.439 --> 00:04:11.919
So that was the big shift for me that kicked my butt into motion.
00:04:12.080 --> 00:04:19.360
And then I started my business shortly after he was born and grew the business while he was a newborn in my lap.
00:04:19.519 --> 00:04:21.199
So that's how it started.
00:04:21.360 --> 00:04:29.920
And I have since launched a uh MA marketplace where content creators and investors buy and sell digital businesses.
00:04:30.079 --> 00:04:32.480
And that's where I really ended up finding my passion.
00:04:32.800 --> 00:04:37.439
You grew the business and the baby concurrently, right?
00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:38.399
Yes.
00:04:38.639 --> 00:04:43.519
Well, and it's, I think so much of life is how we handle the things that come at us, right?
00:04:43.680 --> 00:04:51.439
Uh the things that we could even perceive as challenges in our careers really can kind of open us up to a whole new level.
00:04:51.680 --> 00:04:54.639
But it's about how we respond to those things.
00:04:55.439 --> 00:04:56.399
Oh, totally.
00:04:56.639 --> 00:04:57.040
Totally.
00:04:57.199 --> 00:05:13.360
And there's so many, so much unpredictability, especially when you're starting any type of new venture, whether it be business or in your personal life to make a big change, and kind of being able to accept that you're not going to know it all and you're just going to learn from the process and that failure is actually a good thing.
00:05:13.439 --> 00:05:14.959
It's a learning opportunity.
00:05:15.120 --> 00:05:19.279
That's how you're really going to be able to grow by not expecting that you just know it all.
00:05:19.360 --> 00:05:19.920
Cause we don't.
00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:20.560
None of us do.
00:05:20.639 --> 00:05:24.160
Even if we're we've been in the game for a decade or two, we still are always learning.
00:05:24.240 --> 00:05:26.639
And if we stop learning, that's where we start failing.
00:05:27.279 --> 00:05:32.079
I have a sign that I made uh about a year ago that I have in my office that I can see at all times.
00:05:32.160 --> 00:05:36.800
And it says, every failure that I've had in my life has led me to where I am today.
00:05:37.360 --> 00:05:42.800
And it's like it just completely reframes the fact that failure, it's a lesson, right?
00:05:42.959 --> 00:05:47.600
And it that just really helps us navigate the next thing that we come across even better.
00:05:48.480 --> 00:05:48.959
Totally.
00:05:49.120 --> 00:05:50.560
That's perfectly said.
00:05:51.519 --> 00:05:58.240
When you look back at that earlier version of you, the one working to make ends meet and trying to figure out what was next.
00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:04.399
Sometimes we have to almost like shed a part of us to kind of get to that new place.
00:06:04.639 --> 00:06:10.720
What beliefs or habits had to be shed for that first real transformation to begin?
00:06:11.279 --> 00:06:18.800
Well, I would say the first most substantial step was before I got pregnant, I quit drinking.
00:06:18.879 --> 00:06:24.720
And I in my 20s, drinking was just so normal, you know, pub culture, going out with friends.
00:06:24.879 --> 00:06:25.839
I worked in a bar.
00:06:25.920 --> 00:06:27.920
So it was just always around.
00:06:28.079 --> 00:06:30.879
And I realized I was drinking too too much.
00:06:31.040 --> 00:06:35.600
And if I wanted to get ahead, that was the biggest thing I had to cut out.
00:06:35.759 --> 00:06:38.720
That made the biggest shift for habit-wise.
00:06:38.879 --> 00:06:43.040
And then it was habits like, okay, maybe I don't need to sleep in till 11 a.m.
00:06:43.199 --> 00:06:43.439
anymore.
00:06:43.600 --> 00:06:49.279
What if I became a morning person and I did it inch by inch by starting to get up a little bit earlier and a little bit earlier?
00:06:49.439 --> 00:06:51.040
And now I love getting up at 5 a.m.
00:06:51.199 --> 00:06:54.160
and actually getting to work on my projects at that time.
00:06:54.319 --> 00:06:56.319
Um, that's that takes time though.
00:06:56.480 --> 00:07:03.680
So creating these healthy habits, it's not something you can just do once, twice, and then expect you'll be able to stick to it.
00:07:03.839 --> 00:07:05.519
It takes repetition.
00:07:05.680 --> 00:07:10.959
And with like anything, good habit or bad habit, the more you do it, the more natural it becomes.
00:07:11.199 --> 00:07:23.600
So it's really just that practice of, okay, I want to let go of this part of myself that I'm not too proud of, and I'm going to adapt a new version of myself that I will be proud of and just put all of the focus on her.
00:07:23.759 --> 00:07:31.920
Um, I also like to say, too, that we don't want to look back at our past with, you know, hatred or, you know, oh, she's so embarrassing.
00:07:32.079 --> 00:07:33.360
How could I do that?
00:07:33.600 --> 00:07:38.879
You know, that person, that version of us got us to where we are and they survived.
00:07:39.040 --> 00:07:41.040
And we just need to look back and honor them.
00:07:41.120 --> 00:07:49.199
And we don't need to act like them anymore, but they did their work and now we can move forward with the version of ourselves that we really want to go into the future with.
00:07:49.519 --> 00:07:53.120
I love what you talk about about the habits and that nothing happens all at one time.
00:07:53.279 --> 00:07:56.160
Sometimes it's this gradual, sometimes it's baby steps.
00:07:56.319 --> 00:08:00.160
And that could even be trying to think through what do you want to do next?
00:08:00.240 --> 00:08:01.439
Like it's not even the action.
00:08:01.519 --> 00:08:06.160
It's, you know, sometimes it's it's started and initiated by those thoughts that we have.
00:08:06.319 --> 00:08:08.639
But if you think about it, then it's habit stacking.
00:08:08.720 --> 00:08:13.759
And it was, you gave a perfect example of that, which was if you stopping drinking, right?
00:08:13.920 --> 00:08:16.560
Stopping drinking makes it easier to get up earlier in the morning.
00:08:16.800 --> 00:08:20.959
Getting up earlier in the morning then makes it easier to have a super productive morning routine.
00:08:21.120 --> 00:08:24.480
That shifts and shapes our tone every single day.
00:08:24.639 --> 00:08:30.639
And so those things start to like compound and the efforts and the outcomes start to compound as well.
00:08:31.360 --> 00:08:32.080
Totally.
00:08:32.320 --> 00:08:38.159
And you start to build trust with yourself after a couple times of it, you know, oh, I actually can do this.
00:08:38.320 --> 00:08:41.120
And then you start saying, well, what else could I possibly do?
00:08:41.279 --> 00:08:44.879
You're building that trust and realizing what you really are capable of.
00:08:45.039 --> 00:08:47.360
Well, okay, well, maybe I can actually eat healthy too.
00:08:47.519 --> 00:08:53.519
And then you start meal prepping or just cutting meat or dairy out and just starting to eat more vegetables.
00:08:53.679 --> 00:08:59.279
And then that becomes a habit and that becomes part of your identity as you move forward as well.
00:08:59.440 --> 00:09:02.399
And I'm not saying don't eat junk food because hey, I have a sweet tooth.
00:09:02.480 --> 00:09:03.279
I love chocolate.
00:09:03.440 --> 00:09:05.679
But it's all about that moderation, I think.
00:09:05.759 --> 00:09:11.200
And that all comes into play with that version of ourselves that's living her best life.
00:09:11.440 --> 00:09:17.600
She eats well, she exercises, you know, maybe just goes for a walk in the morning outside, even if it's cold.
00:09:17.759 --> 00:09:18.399
She moves.
00:09:18.480 --> 00:09:24.320
If she's like habit stacking, something that I love to do is I have a walking treadmill that goes under my desk.
00:09:24.480 --> 00:09:30.000
And if I need to catch up on emails or work on a blog article, I'll just be working while I'm walking.
00:09:30.159 --> 00:09:33.360
And that those type of things don't feel like too much work.
00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:35.759
I'm not, you know, breaking a huge sweat.
00:09:35.919 --> 00:09:40.320
It's not a big deal, but I'm getting two things done that were on my list in less time.
00:09:40.720 --> 00:09:41.360
Yeah.
00:09:41.759 --> 00:09:47.679
In your book, Glow Up Yourself, you write about rebuilding your identity, not just circumstances.
00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:52.159
What does that identity-based change mean to you?
00:09:52.960 --> 00:09:59.360
This is such a huge thing for anyone who wants to change something about themselves, improve their life.
00:09:59.519 --> 00:10:03.679
You have to believe that you are the kind of person who does that.
00:10:03.840 --> 00:10:11.200
So if your goal is you want to like the same thing, we want to work out more, then you can't say, oh, I have to work out today.
00:10:11.360 --> 00:10:13.759
I hate jogging, blah, blah, blah.
00:10:13.919 --> 00:10:16.720
You start saying, I love jogging.
00:10:17.039 --> 00:10:18.639
I love going to the gym.
00:10:18.799 --> 00:10:20.960
I love the outfits that I get to go to the gym.
00:10:21.039 --> 00:10:25.279
I'm the kind of person who always loves going to the gym because it's fun.
00:10:25.440 --> 00:10:29.840
So you create, you tag on the identity of the goal that you want to have.
00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:35.039
You are that person who's just a natural part of that person's life to do that thing.
00:10:35.200 --> 00:10:43.840
And that makes reaching goals a lot easier because then we're not just focusing on uh the say amount of pounds I want to lose or gain.
00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:48.720
We're actually taking on the identity of a person who is just a normal part of their day that they work out.
00:10:48.879 --> 00:10:54.639
Like if you want to write a book, you start saying to yourself, I'm a best-selling author.
00:10:54.799 --> 00:10:58.559
It's easy for me to get up in the morning and write because that's what an author does.
00:10:58.720 --> 00:11:05.039
And that makes it easier to do the work when you believe that you are that person that just naturally would do it.
00:11:05.279 --> 00:11:12.480
And our brains are so dynamic that they really do pay attention to the things that we think and say to and about ourselves.
00:11:12.720 --> 00:11:19.200
And so I love that you said that because it is you are literally training your brain to believe the things that you're saying.
00:11:19.360 --> 00:11:25.600
And then you're pairing that with the actions that you become like honoring your word to yourself.
00:11:25.759 --> 00:11:28.879
You're actually keeping your word to yourself and what you say you're going to do.
00:11:29.039 --> 00:11:37.360
And then your brain then says, Oh, great, like I need to believe these two things because she's saying it and thinking it to herself, and she's following that up with action.
00:11:37.519 --> 00:11:44.000
And so I think sometimes we forget how powerful our brains are because human nature is we lean towards the negative.
00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:47.519
Even if we're not saying it out loud, we're thinking some things internally.
00:11:47.679 --> 00:11:52.159
And we have to be really careful because those things that we think, our brain believes.
00:11:52.799 --> 00:11:55.679
And we can use that fact to our advantage.
00:11:55.840 --> 00:11:56.000
Right.
00:11:56.159 --> 00:11:57.360
So I'll give you an example.
00:11:57.519 --> 00:12:04.799
When uh 15 years ago, when I wanted to quit drinking, I started to just say out loud, I'm not a drinker.
00:12:04.960 --> 00:12:10.080
I actually don't like the taste of alcohol, which was a lie, but I just started saying it.
00:12:10.159 --> 00:12:12.799
And then my brain was like, Oh yeah, we don't like alcohol.
00:12:12.879 --> 00:12:14.480
And it became the truth.
00:12:14.639 --> 00:12:19.039
And then it was so easy when I was out with friends and they say, Hey, do you want a drink?
00:12:19.200 --> 00:12:21.039
It was so easy for me to just be like, no, thanks.
00:12:21.120 --> 00:12:22.240
I don't actually don't like it.
00:12:22.399 --> 00:12:24.240
And I, and it was true by then.
00:12:24.559 --> 00:12:36.320
So if you want to uh quit any type of bad habit, or on the opposite, uh uh take on a new good habit, just start telling your brain that it's easy for you to do because that's you.
00:12:36.639 --> 00:12:46.080
I remember years ago listening to a podcast, Lewis Howes, on the School of Greatness, and he was talking about when you're doing things that are hard to smile.
00:12:46.320 --> 00:12:50.639
And I thought, what can I, where can I implement that and not feel silly about it?
00:12:50.879 --> 00:12:57.840
And and I hike, and there was, there's always been this one part of the mountain that, like, oh, I dread, even like coming up to it.
00:12:57.919 --> 00:12:58.639
I'm not even there yet.
00:12:58.720 --> 00:13:00.399
And I'm like, oh God, I'm almost there.
00:13:00.559 --> 00:13:02.159
I know, like it's the hardest one.
00:13:02.240 --> 00:13:03.600
It's the hardest portion of it.
00:13:03.759 --> 00:13:05.759
And it's just like a straight incline.
00:13:05.919 --> 00:13:07.600
And I started smiling.
00:13:07.759 --> 00:13:11.759
Like, I'm sure people passing by were like, wow, this person must really enjoy hiking.
00:13:11.919 --> 00:13:23.919
But I would smile and and the the psychology behind that is you're like your brain can't believe both you smiling and that you are dreading something.
00:13:24.080 --> 00:13:26.000
And so it's gonna, so I started smiling.
00:13:26.080 --> 00:13:31.440
And then the funny thing is, probably 10 hikes in, I stopped dreading that piece.
00:13:31.519 --> 00:13:33.919
And I was like, oh, I actually am gonna smile through this.
00:13:34.080 --> 00:13:37.360
And so I've started to implement that in situations where I'm doing things that are hard.
00:13:37.440 --> 00:13:41.440
And I'm like, my brain can't think that it's hard and I can I'm smiling at the same time.
00:13:41.519 --> 00:13:43.279
It like confuses your brain.
00:13:43.440 --> 00:13:48.240
And that's that's another psychology hack to be able to utilize to get through the hard stuff.
00:13:48.480 --> 00:13:49.600
Oh, that's a good one.
00:13:49.759 --> 00:13:52.720
I'm gonna try that the next time I'm getting my taxes ready for my book.
00:13:53.039 --> 00:13:53.440
There you go.
00:13:53.519 --> 00:13:55.200
Just smile the whole time.
00:13:56.320 --> 00:13:57.600
Smile through the tears.
00:13:57.840 --> 00:13:58.480
That's right.
00:13:58.720 --> 00:14:01.360
Well, you often say no one is coming to save you.
00:14:01.519 --> 00:14:07.519
Uh, how did you build genuine self-reliance instead of more of that temporary motivation?
00:14:08.559 --> 00:14:12.320
It's a process that is something to continue.
00:14:12.480 --> 00:14:18.000
It's not, for me at least, it isn't something that I can just do and then I'm set, set it, and forget it.
00:14:18.080 --> 00:14:20.879
It's something that I have to remind myself often.
00:14:21.120 --> 00:14:26.559
Um, and that is a big theme in the book where we need to step up for ourselves.
00:14:26.720 --> 00:14:37.360
If we want to reach any type of goal or try something new, whether it's maybe start a business, write a book, take on a new like cooking skill, dance, something that puts you out of your comfort zone.
00:14:37.679 --> 00:14:43.039
You really have to know that no one is gonna just come and make you do the work.
00:14:43.200 --> 00:14:48.320
No one's gonna wake you up early and make you go to the gym or make you write your manuscript.
00:14:48.559 --> 00:14:50.159
It's all on you.
00:14:50.720 --> 00:15:00.639
There's no magic fairy, no prince or rich benefactor for most of us is gonna not be around to just pay for us to be able to reach our goals.
00:15:00.960 --> 00:15:05.039
We are the person that is in charge of making everything happen.
00:15:05.200 --> 00:15:12.960
So believing in that, knowing that, stop expecting someone to just come in with waving a magic wand and fix everything.
00:15:13.279 --> 00:15:15.759
We individually are on our own rescue missions.
00:15:15.840 --> 00:15:19.039
And then when we accept that, everything is possible.
00:15:19.279 --> 00:15:21.120
Everything can be achieved.
00:15:21.279 --> 00:15:24.720
You don't have to wait for permission, approval, anything.
00:15:24.879 --> 00:15:26.000
You're in charge.
00:15:26.240 --> 00:15:33.039
And I've chatted a little bit on my podcast about being a creative director of your own life.
00:15:33.200 --> 00:15:34.559
And that really comes into it.
00:15:34.639 --> 00:15:50.000
So when you step up and you say, okay, I'm gonna look at all of the different areas in my life that I can edit, just like a creative director would of someone who's managing a creative project, maybe for an art show or even a movie or like fashion, whatever it is, it doesn't matter.
00:15:50.159 --> 00:15:54.799
It's just something that you come in and you say, okay, I'm gonna edit in my life.
00:15:55.039 --> 00:16:03.039
And there's four sort of areas that I like to look at when I'm sitting down and planning a life upgrade kind of thing.
00:16:03.200 --> 00:16:04.559
There's the visionary.
00:16:04.720 --> 00:16:10.320
So that's the version of you that sets up the concept for this season of your life.
00:16:10.480 --> 00:16:11.440
What do you want to achieve?
00:16:11.519 --> 00:16:12.879
What do you need to do to get there?
00:16:13.120 --> 00:16:14.720
What am I creating right now?
00:16:14.960 --> 00:16:17.039
And then there's the version of you that's the editor.
00:16:17.279 --> 00:16:26.879
That's where you're thinking about removing what's not working, what no longer fits the vision of your life and of your future goals, the habits, people, because that's a big one.
00:16:26.960 --> 00:16:37.279
Sometimes there's people in your life that probably don't need to be there, the bad influences or the people who, you know, demand your energy and they have maybe a negative energy that doesn't help you.
00:16:37.360 --> 00:16:41.360
You walk away from a conversation with them and you just feel uh like that, you know?
00:16:41.919 --> 00:16:45.279
Those type of people, maybe we limit our time with them.
00:16:45.759 --> 00:16:48.159
And then there's the producer, that's the third one.
00:16:48.320 --> 00:16:52.720
So when we think of a movie, usually the producer is the money person, right?
00:16:52.879 --> 00:16:54.639
The person who's funding the project.
00:16:54.879 --> 00:16:56.240
So you have to think about that too.
00:16:56.320 --> 00:16:59.440
What sort of funds do you need to allocate to reach your goals?
00:16:59.600 --> 00:17:03.840
Do you need to get a gym membership or get some sort of gym equipment at your house?
00:17:04.079 --> 00:17:08.720
Um, you know, what do you need to do in order to reach your goals that may cost actual money?
00:17:08.960 --> 00:17:18.400
Other things that a producer would do would be putting systems in place, plans in place so that that vision can actually exist in your real life.
00:17:18.640 --> 00:17:20.960
And then the fourth is the talent.
00:17:21.200 --> 00:17:28.720
So the talent is the version of you that shows up daily and actually lives this new life, this version of you.
00:17:28.960 --> 00:17:35.519
You believe it with your mindset, you're actively doing the things that this current new version of you does.
00:17:35.680 --> 00:17:39.200
You're sticking to your good habits, you're letting go of the bad ones.
00:17:39.440 --> 00:17:41.440
That's the talent version of you.
00:17:41.599 --> 00:17:55.599
And with those four people that we, you know, it's all you, but four different versions of your mind that you can focus on those things, that's a really great way that you can start to uh change your life, edit your life, and put you on the track that you want to be on.
00:17:55.920 --> 00:17:56.319
I love it.
00:17:56.400 --> 00:17:59.200
And the beauty is you're in control of all of those things.
00:17:59.599 --> 00:18:06.799
And so if one isn't showing up, one kind of character, if you will, isn't showing up the way that they should be, like it's looking in the mirror.
00:18:06.880 --> 00:18:16.400
And it's like, okay, how can I tweak what I'm doing to make sure that I am a hundred percent stepping into this, this step of the of the equation?
00:18:17.119 --> 00:18:18.720
Yes, yes, absolutely.
00:18:19.119 --> 00:18:23.599
I think routines and habits paved the way, like they're a foundation.
00:18:23.839 --> 00:18:33.519
What were some of your earliest habits or routines that helped you shift from survival mode to really embracing a mindset of wealth and possibility?
00:18:34.160 --> 00:18:39.759
Well, the first one was believing that making heaps of money was even possible.
00:18:40.079 --> 00:18:42.480
I did not come from money in any way.
00:18:42.640 --> 00:18:44.240
I, you know, grew up with a single mom.
00:18:44.400 --> 00:18:45.920
We were just getting by.
00:18:46.079 --> 00:18:47.440
You know, I had a good childhood.
00:18:47.519 --> 00:18:52.799
I obviously was very happy for the childhood I had, but it was not a financially expressive childhood.
00:18:52.880 --> 00:18:59.119
It was, you know, it was, it was very bare bones in a good way, but money was not in my background.
00:18:59.200 --> 00:19:02.640
And also financial literacy was not something that I came up with.
00:19:02.799 --> 00:19:07.920
These were all things that I had to learn when I got older and do that on my own.
00:19:08.079 --> 00:19:14.240
So reaching out, uh, sorry, watching videos, reading books, getting a mentor when I was ready to.
00:19:14.400 --> 00:19:32.319
Um, but really it started with sitting down, looking at my finances without being embarrassed, and really just getting used to looking at my bank account every single week or every single day, really paying attention to where money was going, cutting back on expenses.
00:19:32.480 --> 00:19:37.680
And when I started doing this practice of looking at my money, it became very exciting.
00:19:37.759 --> 00:19:41.759
Even though I only had a little bit at this time, this was just right out of university.
00:19:41.920 --> 00:19:50.400
I was like, oh, I can actually see how I could stack money by just not spending on these things and seeing the visual of these numbers.
00:19:50.480 --> 00:19:53.279
And I didn't use anything fancy, it was just like a Google Sheet spreadsheet.
00:19:53.519 --> 00:19:59.680
Might have actually been Excel back then, and seeing the numbers increase each month, even in small increments.
00:20:00.319 --> 00:20:06.960
Gave me this motivation to start believing that I could create more wealth in my life.
00:20:07.039 --> 00:20:09.839
And that belief is really what changed everything.
00:20:10.079 --> 00:20:12.720
And then I started being open to new opportunities.
00:20:12.960 --> 00:20:17.759
When I would see an idea or I'd have an idea for a business, I could just try it.
00:20:17.839 --> 00:20:25.359
It didn't have to be a big deal, but I could just try it and get something online and, you know, just start doing something and then see what clicked.
00:20:25.440 --> 00:20:30.799
And if that was all because I had that initial belief that it was possible that before I did not have.
00:20:31.519 --> 00:20:38.319
It's amazing how much we really do have to evaluate closely our relationship with money.
00:20:38.720 --> 00:20:41.039
Same situation, grew up with a single mom.
00:20:41.279 --> 00:20:46.160
And I probably didn't know that we were, you know, at like the poverty line.
00:20:46.319 --> 00:20:49.920
I had no idea because I didn't necessarily go without things.
00:20:50.079 --> 00:20:55.279
But it was interesting how that played a role in my life as I got older and moving into my career.
00:20:55.440 --> 00:21:02.319
And at one point in time, I remember feeling like, whoa, I don't like there was this weird feeling was starting to make good money.
00:21:02.559 --> 00:21:18.240
And it was this a little bit of this kind of insecurity or scarcity, I think, you know, mindset and doing the work to unpack why you felt that way, understanding that there's little seeds that are kind of planted in you along the way, but you really can't unpack that and have a healthy relationship with money.
00:21:18.319 --> 00:21:22.319
And to your point, feel worthy of that as well.
00:21:22.640 --> 00:21:25.039
And so I love that you kind of walked through that.
00:21:25.200 --> 00:21:30.079
I remember the first time I started really paying attention to that, I started gamifying it for myself.
00:21:30.160 --> 00:21:32.240
I didn't realize that was what I was doing in the moment.
00:21:32.640 --> 00:21:38.480
But I remember like, okay, when I would get paid, uh, I would have all the bills paid off and I would put some into savings.
00:21:38.640 --> 00:21:45.680
And then everything that was left over, like I would get so excited when my next check came because I'd take everything that was left over and put that in savings.
00:21:45.759 --> 00:21:47.839
And then I'd create like a goal for myself.
00:21:48.000 --> 00:21:56.000
And that started paving the way for having a very different, like a positive spin on my financial, my relationship with money.
00:21:56.640 --> 00:21:58.319
Yes, that's so powerful.
00:21:58.480 --> 00:22:02.720
It's that belief system in yourself when things kind of start clicking.
00:22:02.799 --> 00:22:14.400
And you made a really interesting point there where you didn't notice that you maybe your family didn't have much money when you were younger, but it started coming up and you noticed it in different ways as you got older.
00:22:14.720 --> 00:22:25.680
And the same thing happened to me too when I was uh early adulthood or even high school, maybe when I started noticing that my friends and other kids in the school, like, oh, like they got a car for their birthday?
00:22:25.839 --> 00:22:26.960
Okay, well, that's weird.
00:22:27.200 --> 00:22:29.119
Or, oh, they have a college fund.
00:22:29.279 --> 00:22:32.400
Like they can actually just choose what college they want to go to after this.
00:22:32.559 --> 00:22:33.440
I didn't have that.
00:22:33.599 --> 00:22:35.599
I didn't even think that was something that people did.
00:22:35.759 --> 00:22:39.680
That's how I just wasn't financially literate at all.
00:22:39.839 --> 00:22:48.480
And now that I'm a parent, I've been saving up for my kid's education since he was born because that just seems natural to me that you would want to do that.
00:22:48.720 --> 00:22:54.000
And when I was uh going through school, I was waitressing, paying my tuition that way.
00:22:54.240 --> 00:23:02.720
I started to pick up some kind of negative money mindset just by feeling compared, uh comparing myself to my peers who had their tuition paid.
00:23:02.880 --> 00:23:14.160
And I was taking on some sort of negative, not good money mindset stuff, feeling a little bit like sorry for myself that I had to then work through as I got older to realize that that's okay.
00:23:14.319 --> 00:23:15.680
Other people should be happy.
00:23:15.839 --> 00:23:18.559
I'm happy that my friends have that taken care of in their family.
00:23:18.720 --> 00:23:21.279
I'm looking at that now as that's inspiring.
00:23:21.519 --> 00:23:23.680
I can do that for my family moving forward.
00:23:23.920 --> 00:23:25.039
But it's not easy.
00:23:25.200 --> 00:23:32.960
There were years where I felt bad for myself and had a bad money mindset, and it really is something that you develop over time to get through that.
00:23:33.119 --> 00:23:36.799
So I'm it's I love that you mentioned that too, because yeah, it's definitely a process.
00:23:37.279 --> 00:23:39.200
Okay, time to hit the pause button.
00:23:39.440 --> 00:23:43.359
Make sure to come back next week for part two where we go even deeper.
00:23:43.599 --> 00:23:54.240
Chelsea breaks down what it really means to become the creative director of your own life, from self-reliance and money mindset to editing your environment, your habits, and even the people around you.
00:23:54.400 --> 00:24:01.039
If you're ready to stop waiting for permission and start designing your next chapter on purpose, you don't want to miss what's coming next.
00:24:01.200 --> 00:24:02.160
See you then.
00:24:06.640 --> 00:24:12.480
If today's episode challenged you, moved you, or lit a fire in your soul, don't keep it to yourself.
00:24:12.720 --> 00:24:14.880
Share it with somebody who's ready to rise.
00:24:15.200 --> 00:24:18.079
Could I ask you to take 30 seconds to leave a review?
00:24:18.319 --> 00:24:23.359
It's the best way to say thank you and help this show reach more bold leaders like you.
00:24:23.519 --> 00:24:26.480
Because this isn't just a podcast, it's a movement.
00:24:26.720 --> 00:24:28.319
We're not here to play small.
00:24:28.480 --> 00:24:33.039
We're here to lead loud, one bold and unapologetic step at a time.
00:24:33.279 --> 00:24:40.079
Until next time, stay bold, stay grounded, and make moves that make mediocre uncomfortable.
