OM DENNE EPISODE
Tudor Evans Part One. Period covered: Wales – the move to Plymouth – being a student.
Much of Tudor’s public life as an elected member of Plymouth City Council is well documented. This conversation instead explores the experiences, influences, and relationships formed long before he entered public office the human story that helps explain the motivations behind decades of civic leadership. Tudor moved from Wales to study in Plymouth in the late 1970s, bringing values shaped by his childhood in Ebbw Vale. Growing up in a mining and steel community gave him a strong and enduring sense of social justice, rooted in solidarity, fairness, and the collective spirit that defined everyday life. These early experiences shaped not only his politics but his understanding of people. Music played a major role in Tudor’s early years and continues to do so. His passion began at school and later opened unexpected doors once he arrived in Plymouth, becoming a thread that connected him to new communities and opportunities. At Plymouth Polytechnic (now the University), where he studied environmental science, Tudor immersed himself in the city’s music scene. He attended gigs, got to know local venues, became the Polytechnic’s Social Secretary, and later editor of Fly, the weekly student journal. Through student politics, booking bands, organising events, and writing for a publication, he learned to work with a wide range of people and personalities. After leaving the Polytechnic, Tudor worked at HMV before moving to the Resource Centre, a print shop within the Virginia House Settlement on the Barbican a place that would significantly shape the next stage of his life. It was a genuine crossroads of Plymouth’s civic and cultural life. Community organisers, activists, and local groups produced newsletters; volunteers brought ideas and concerns from their neighbourhoods; musicians printed flyers. Through these everyday encounters, Tudor deepened his understanding of the city’s social fabric and built relationships with the many community members who held it together. During this period Tudor met his partner, Jane, a relationship that has quietly but profoundly shaped his life. Jane was politically active and came from a family with a long history of activism at both local and national levels. Her understanding of public life, combined with her own convictions, created a partnership defined not only by affection but by shared purpose supporting Tudor’s resilience and enabling him to remain focused, grounded, and committed to his long‑standing drive to shape a fairer city where Plymouth’s potential can thrive. The Virginia House era laid the foundations for Tudor’s move into elected office. He first stood for election in Mount Gould, an attempt that was unsuccessful, but was elected in Ham in 1988, a ward he has represented continuously ever since. Thirty‑eight years of uninterrupted service is a remarkable achievement. While politics inevitably involves differences of opinion, Tudor’s long commitment reflects a profound belief in public service, shaped by his experiences in Wales, his life in Plymouth, his relationship with Jane, and the support of close family and friends. It also reflects something less visible: a motivation rooted in community, connection, and responsibility to place. Over those decades, Tudor has become one of Plymouth’s most significant elected figures, serving five periods as Leader of the Council, including his current term, and four periods as Leader of the Opposition. His leadership has spanned and overseen major changes in the city’s social, cultural, and political landscape.
Virginia House Settlement (VHS) was a community-welfare and settlement organisation founded by Lord and Lady Astor, formally opened in December 1925 on Looe Street near the Barbican. From the 1970sthrough to the mid 1990’s it focused on community development, adult education and support for voluntary organisations.
