OM DENNE EPISODE
If you are still pitching with your experience and portfolio, you need to listen to this episode.
I had a crazy experience the other day. I posted on LinkedIn asking for help writing some case studies, and I was inundated with DM's. What blew my mind was that not a single person led with any value. They all just shared their experience and portfolio.
In 2026, this only gets you drowned out in the noise. It won't win high-value clients, and you are probably leaving thousands on the table.
Instead, you must lead with value and insight. The right clients have more money than time; they won’t DIY; they’ll pay for someone who’s showing how it’s done. You must give away your best ideas and thinking before you pitch
I break down the exact approach in this episode and what I would have done differently.

UDSKRIFT 🔗
00:00.096 --> 00:03.815
I actually can't believe how easy it is to be in the
00:04.315 --> 00:07.822
top 1% as a freelancer or
00:07.886 --> 00:11.413
studio owner by just doing these 2
00:11.913 --> 00:15.469
things. If you're not doing these, then you're probably leaving
00:15.885 --> 00:19.156
thousands of pounds on the table. I'm not exaggerating.
00:33.537 --> 00:35.992
Welcome to the Creative Courage Podcast. My name is Matt Essam,
00:36.811 --> 00:40.630
and today's gonna sound like a bit of a rant. It is 20 to 9
00:40.759 --> 00:45.060
on a Sunday evening, and I have felt compelled
00:45.718 --> 00:49.073
to grab my microphone and record
00:49.105 --> 00:53.021
this week's podcast because I
00:53.521 --> 00:56.552
had an experience this week which kind of blew my mind.
00:57.354 --> 01:01.431
So, I posted on LinkedIn asking if anyone
01:01.944 --> 01:05.957
knew a copywriter or somebody who specialized
01:06.583 --> 01:10.178
in case study writing. And within a couple of days,
01:11.334 --> 01:15.170
this post had over 60 comments from
01:15.186 --> 01:19.102
people saying they could help. And I literally had 25
01:19.602 --> 01:23.114
to 30 DMs on top
01:23.130 --> 01:26.643
of that. And so the thing that blew
01:27.143 --> 01:30.846
my mind was out of all of these people. So let's just say it was
01:31.346 --> 01:33.797
60 in total. It was probably more than that, but let's just say it's 60
01:34.297 --> 01:38.096
in total to be conservative. Out of everybody that messaged
01:38.128 --> 01:42.266
me and said that they could help, not a single one of them led
01:42.924 --> 01:46.838
with any kind of value. Every message
01:47.191 --> 01:50.575
was some form of, I've been doing this for X
01:51.075 --> 01:54.299
amount of years. Here's my portfolio. You should
01:54.799 --> 01:58.011
choose me. Or I recommend so-and-so, you should get in touch with
01:58.511 --> 02:01.998
them. And it blows my mind because in 2026,
02:03.809 --> 02:08.152
there is no excuse for pitching
02:08.830 --> 02:12.576
this way. There is so much information out
02:12.689 --> 02:15.825
there. And I don't like, if you're listening to this and you're one of those
02:15.857 --> 02:19.009
people that submitted this, I really don't want you to feel like I'm having a
02:19.509 --> 02:23.308
go at you because I know it's very difficult. To be
02:23.808 --> 02:27.383
a marketer and also do the thing that you do really well for your
02:27.431 --> 02:30.584
clients, right? It's why I have a business and it's why I've been able to
02:31.084 --> 02:34.799
be successful in what I do over the years, because there's such a need for
02:35.299 --> 02:38.479
this. So the passion you
02:38.607 --> 02:42.941
hear in my voice is an urgent call to anybody
02:43.038 --> 02:46.848
listening to this podcast right now who is not leading with
02:47.348 --> 02:51.612
value. In their pitch. And I will be specific and I will tell you exactly
02:52.112 --> 02:53.666
what I mean by this. And this is not going to be vague. I'm going
02:54.166 --> 02:57.917
to give you a very specific example of how I would have approached this
02:58.510 --> 03:02.232
if I was a copywriter or I was a case
03:02.732 --> 03:07.703
study writer. So for context, I put the post out on LinkedIn,
03:08.200 --> 03:12.131
right? And I ask, hey, does anybody know somebody that could help me write
03:12.631 --> 03:15.902
these case studies? And I get all of these comments and everybody
03:16.402 --> 03:19.579
is just pitching me. And so what I've had to do is I've had to
03:19.595 --> 03:23.031
create an application form and say, in order to narrow this
03:23.064 --> 03:26.243
down, because I don't have the time or inclination to
03:26.275 --> 03:30.096
reply to every single person. Right. And, and what's amazing
03:30.209 --> 03:33.484
is how many people said, hey, let's jump on a call and included a calendar
03:33.984 --> 03:37.884
link. Like if you're, if you look at my profile and
03:38.622 --> 03:42.086
you read the post and you see
03:42.586 --> 03:45.565
how many comments there are, do you really think that I'm going to be jumping
03:45.677 --> 03:49.220
on even a 30-minute call with every single person who
03:49.720 --> 03:52.715
said, hey, you should check out my portfolio. Hey, I can definitely help you.
03:53.548 --> 03:57.123
Right? If you want to be paid a lot of money, then I suggest
03:57.636 --> 04:01.243
that you target people and you work with people who've got
04:01.743 --> 04:04.930
more money than time. The people that have got more money than time don't want
04:05.430 --> 04:07.671
to jump on a call. They don't want to jump on a call to hear
04:08.171 --> 04:11.807
your sales pitch, right? The call should be the last
04:11.823 --> 04:14.997
part of the sales process, not the first part. So anyway, I,
04:15.190 --> 04:18.620
I've, I can feel myself going on a rant, but like, I'm so
04:19.120 --> 04:22.692
passionate about this because it's so easy to fix. And I didn't realize
04:22.724 --> 04:26.716
how many people are still doing this. So what would
04:27.216 --> 04:30.451
I have done differently? Well, first of all, out of the 60 people
04:30.516 --> 04:34.335
that pitched me, there are probably only about 10 to 15 who
04:34.770 --> 04:37.886
are actually specialized case study writers.
04:38.467 --> 04:40.889
Okay. So they're already at the, they're already in the top 10%.
04:42.684 --> 04:45.935
So having a niche or whether you niche your whole business or whether you at
04:46.435 --> 04:49.752
least just call out who you help and what you do in
04:49.785 --> 04:53.626
your LinkedIn profile and your social profile already puts you above
04:53.658 --> 04:57.323
everybody else. So rather than saying I'm a copywriter is I specialize
04:57.355 --> 05:01.013
in creating B2B case studies for tech companies
05:01.205 --> 05:04.828
or coaches or whatever. Now you might think there's not enough work
05:04.893 --> 05:07.954
out there. Well, of course there is, right? Because there are thousands
05:08.454 --> 05:12.106
of coaches, hundreds of thousands of coaches, there are hundreds of thousands of tech
05:12.606 --> 05:15.729
companies, and they all need case studies, whether they realize it or not. They all
05:16.229 --> 05:19.465
need a way to demonstrate how good the thing is that they
05:19.965 --> 05:22.607
do. They need testimonials, any case studies, right? So of course, there's a big enough
05:22.671 --> 05:26.104
market. So we need to get that out of our mind. So Number one is
05:26.521 --> 05:29.654
have some kind of positioning that calls out the person you help, or as a
05:30.154 --> 05:33.477
minimum, the result that you get for somebody and the mechanism in which you do
05:33.525 --> 05:37.766
it. Now, if you're a service provider,
05:37.782 --> 05:41.156
if you're a freelancer, small studio, agency, whatever, and you're in the
05:41.656 --> 05:44.561
creative space and you provide a service, copywriting, design,
05:45.011 --> 05:46.987
animation, film, whatever it is,
05:48.449 --> 05:52.368
chances are 90% of the people listening to this have a done-for-you service.
05:53.284 --> 05:56.496
Right? So you may also have a done-with-you service.
05:56.721 --> 05:58.600
You may also have got to the point where like, actually, I could teach a
05:58.665 --> 06:02.214
few people how to do this. But the majority of your work
06:02.680 --> 06:06.391
probably is and probably should be coming for done-for-you,
06:06.439 --> 06:09.828
right? So the client isn't being taught how to do it and trying to implement
06:10.328 --> 06:13.763
it themselves. They're giving you a certain amount of information and you're doing the
06:14.263 --> 06:17.506
thing for them to get the result. So in that case,
06:18.100 --> 06:20.815
you need to lead with a huge amount of value upfront.
06:21.953 --> 06:25.029
Right? Because if you don't demonstrate the thing,
06:26.199 --> 06:29.532
then how do they know you're actually able to
06:29.564 --> 06:31.454
deliver it? So in this case,
06:32.672 --> 06:36.133
what I would have done is, A, as a minimum,
06:36.598 --> 06:40.812
as a minimum, I would have a guide or
06:40.844 --> 06:44.834
a checklist or something which just tells
06:45.587 --> 06:50.011
the person I'm pitching to exactly how to create an
06:50.511 --> 06:53.094
amazing case study, right? In this instance.
06:53.608 --> 06:57.028
So I wouldn't have led with, hey Matt, I'm the
06:57.044 --> 07:00.335
perfect copywriter for you. We can jump on a call and I'll tell
07:00.835 --> 07:03.739
you how amazing I am, which is basically what most people are saying.
07:04.623 --> 07:08.637
I would have said something like, hey Matt, I know it's really difficult ciphering
07:08.701 --> 07:11.238
through all of these messages. Um,
07:11.832 --> 07:15.830
and creating B2B case studies can be really complicated. So I put together
07:15.846 --> 07:19.298
a guide based on my previous 5 years experience,
07:19.764 --> 07:23.200
10 years, however long you've been doing this, of creating really
07:23.216 --> 07:27.696
powerful B2B case studies that have generated thousands of new
07:27.889 --> 07:31.260
clients, opportunities, whatever, for my clients. And I've broken
07:31.760 --> 07:35.933
the whole thing down. So if you want to take a look at this as
07:36.433 --> 07:39.353
a guide, and even if you want to go and use this to create this
07:39.853 --> 07:43.045
yourself. Here it is. Here's all of my best thinking. Here are
07:43.545 --> 07:45.789
all of my best ideas. Step by step, I'm going to show you what makes
07:46.289 --> 07:50.187
a really compelling case study based on my experience
07:50.687 --> 07:53.413
and based on the results that we've got for our clients. Okay,
07:53.509 --> 07:56.655
so if anyone had done that out of all
07:56.703 --> 07:59.399
of those 60 people, I probably would have ignored everybody else.
07:59.447 --> 08:02.561
Now, providing it's good and it's not created by ChatGPT,
08:02.641 --> 08:06.461
right? Providing I read that, what I want to
08:06.494 --> 08:09.835
feel as somebody reading that is this person knows more than
08:09.931 --> 08:13.529
I do. Because I'm not going to lie, I have got quite far along with
08:13.545 --> 08:18.043
this process with a really good Claude prompt and
08:18.059 --> 08:22.042
a bunch of client interviews from sales call all the way through to testimonial.
08:22.781 --> 08:26.411
And it's done a pretty good job. It just needs an expert to come in
08:26.911 --> 08:29.784
and turn it into more of a story, to pull out the things that are
08:30.284 --> 08:33.544
a bit boring, because let's be honest, People don't read case studies and get
08:34.044 --> 08:37.611
excited. They only read case studies when they're considering buying something
08:38.061 --> 08:42.418
and they need more evidence, or they need to see themselves more
08:42.804 --> 08:45.877
in this person in order to feel confident that it's the right decision, right?
08:47.485 --> 08:50.911
So I would create that and
08:51.412 --> 08:55.519
I would just give people my best thinking. Now, most people listening
08:55.535 --> 08:57.564
to this go, well, then that person's just going to go away and do it
08:58.064 --> 09:01.326
themselves and then I'll lose the business. If you're targeting the right people, that does
09:01.358 --> 09:05.208
not happen, right? I'm not going to then get that PDF and
09:05.708 --> 09:07.984
be like, oh, let me try and improve the thing that I've already done.
09:08.497 --> 09:12.155
I've put the post out, said that I'm looking for somebody. I have
09:12.267 --> 09:15.604
more money than time. I mean, I have kind of both at the moment,
09:15.717 --> 09:18.973
but the people you want to be targeting, they have more money than time,
09:20.209 --> 09:23.417
but they're not going to go away and do it themselves. That's the point.
09:23.562 --> 09:27.059
You offer a done-for-you service. So as a minimum, if you haven't got
09:27.364 --> 09:30.603
some kind of guide, or checklist or PDF,
09:30.955 --> 09:35.684
which explains how to get the thing that
09:35.828 --> 09:38.424
you are promising to your done-for-you clients,
09:39.770 --> 09:43.473
then you are literally leaving tens, maybe hundreds
09:43.973 --> 09:47.912
of thousands of pounds on the table as a minimum, right? So if you
09:47.928 --> 09:51.166
do that, if you do those 2 things, number one, your positioning is around
09:51.871 --> 09:54.660
the result that you're actually getting and who you get it for. And I've spoken
09:55.160 --> 09:57.785
about this before, the 4 Ps: person, problem, promise, process.
09:58.426 --> 10:01.102
Right? So I won't go into that now. If you want to learn more about
10:01.150 --> 10:04.644
that, it's in some of my other podcast episodes. Number 1
10:04.836 --> 10:08.362
is a really good start. Number 2, then actually for the process piece, how we
10:08.862 --> 10:11.663
get someone from A to B, map it out and give all of your best
10:12.163 --> 10:15.077
thinking away for free so that somebody could copy you. Competitors,
10:15.573 --> 10:18.394
people that don't have money, whatever, right? Get it out there.
10:19.820 --> 10:23.218
Get your logo on it, get all your stuff on it so it is copyright.
10:23.586 --> 10:25.653
And if somebody does just rip it off, you could be like, hey, by the
10:25.669 --> 10:28.394
way, this is the thing I created and here's the date and here's the stamp
10:28.894 --> 10:32.613
and here's all my stuff. You can't use this, right? That is what copyright
10:32.725 --> 10:36.080
is. And I know we live in this world where everyone's copying everything these days,
10:36.176 --> 10:39.627
but it still stands. And you don't want to get a cease and
10:40.127 --> 10:43.960
desist letter. It's a pretty scary thing to receive. So it's
10:44.040 --> 10:47.010
very easy to do if you can prove that you created that thing and someone's
10:47.510 --> 10:50.492
literally just ripped that off of your website or your PDF. So forget that.
10:50.557 --> 10:53.638
Don't worry about that for now, right? Create that.
10:54.312 --> 10:57.538
The final icing on the cake, and this is where I would have probably chosen
10:58.038 --> 11:03.154
that person, without looking at anybody else is if
11:03.218 --> 11:06.748
that guide then said, use our assessment
11:07.248 --> 11:11.129
tool to rank or rate your
11:11.819 --> 11:14.707
case studies. Now, what do I mean by that? Well,
11:15.365 --> 11:18.606
in that guide, if you imagine you're trying to teach this to somebody,
11:19.424 --> 11:22.537
you would want like a teacher marking a paper.
11:23.291 --> 11:25.842
You would want to know like, what's my marking criteria? How do I know if
11:26.342 --> 11:30.086
this is a good answer or not? So let's say step 1 of the creating
11:30.118 --> 11:33.384
B2B case studies process is
11:33.480 --> 11:37.503
getting the right interview questions
11:37.520 --> 11:40.368
because it all starts with the interview, right? Okay.
11:40.918 --> 11:43.926
Are you asking and say part 1 is like, it all starts with the interview.
11:44.652 --> 11:47.541
Are you asking these 4 questions? These are the 4 crucial questions that you must
11:47.621 --> 11:50.155
ask in the interview. If you don't ask these questions, then you can't get a
11:50.219 --> 11:53.676
good case study. Great. So then in this like assessment tool,
11:53.726 --> 11:57.043
which is super easy to build. For £30 a month,
11:57.139 --> 12:00.826
or I think they even have a free one. You can go to scoreapp.com and
12:00.922 --> 12:04.097
build one of these things. Super easy, right? You would
12:04.353 --> 12:08.425
ask a yes, no, maybe question. Do you have
12:09.563 --> 12:13.523
4 specific questions that you ask
12:13.571 --> 12:18.412
in every client interview when you're
12:18.621 --> 12:22.117
recording a testimonial or a case study? Yes,
12:22.551 --> 12:25.939
no, maybe. And so they get 10 points for yes, 0 points for no,
12:26.180 --> 12:28.781
and 5 points for maybe. And then you move on to the next thing,
12:28.974 --> 12:31.045
right? Well, next we do this, then we do this, then we do this.
12:31.559 --> 12:35.316
And you go and create a question, which is a yes,
12:35.332 --> 12:38.752
no, maybe answer for each section of
12:38.784 --> 12:41.835
the thing that you've created, the checklist to guide your process,
12:42.557 --> 12:45.961
and you have it accompany the thing. So now not only do I
12:46.973 --> 12:50.361
know how you create compelling case studies. You've shown me, you've walked me through the
12:50.861 --> 12:54.391
process, but I can then look at one of my case studies and I
12:54.439 --> 12:57.699
can answer these questions and it's gonna give me a score, let's say out of
12:58.199 --> 13:01.183
100. So I can look at something I've already created, this kind of 80% there.
13:01.247 --> 13:03.929
And I'm like, oh, I'm not doing that. I'm not doing that. Then I can
13:03.977 --> 13:07.204
also take the assessment and I can say, I only get a 60%. So then
13:07.704 --> 13:11.186
the conversation becomes, would you like my help getting this to 100%?
13:12.503 --> 13:15.874
So I've identified the gap. I've showed you how I close
13:16.374 --> 13:20.273
it. And hopefully in that guide, there is something there as the
13:20.773 --> 13:24.752
client that makes me go, I haven't thought of that. Or yes, I'm experiencing
13:24.784 --> 13:27.802
that thing. And no, I'm not doing that. Right.
13:27.851 --> 13:32.908
So I've identified a gap. That is all someone
13:33.116 --> 13:36.664
out of those 60 people would have needed to do in
13:37.164 --> 13:40.999
order to immediately get my business. And immediately choose
13:41.063 --> 13:44.642
them over anybody else. And not a single
13:45.172 --> 13:48.735
person did that, which blows my mind. And I don't
13:48.783 --> 13:52.234
think this is exclusive to copywriters. I think
13:52.734 --> 13:55.910
this is happening way more than I realized because I then went around and
13:55.990 --> 13:59.618
looked at some other people that I know, some people that have maybe
14:00.118 --> 14:02.780
messaged me saying they're struggling to find clients at the moment and things like that.
14:03.310 --> 14:06.681
And guess what? They have zero upfront value.
14:07.467 --> 14:10.695
On their LinkedIn profile, on their website. Now, I think
14:11.195 --> 14:13.794
these things got a bad rep because people call them lead magnets. And I don't
14:13.810 --> 14:17.037
like that word. I call it an irresistible offer. Like, hey,
14:17.503 --> 14:21.693
here's some information about how we actually just
14:22.193 --> 14:25.740
do this stuff for our clients. Like, if you don't have that
14:26.832 --> 14:30.203
in 2026 and beyond, you are
14:30.703 --> 14:34.104
literally leaving thousands of pounds
14:34.602 --> 14:37.988
on the table. So I had to rant about it. I had to do a
14:38.488 --> 14:41.808
podcast about it. I had to put it out into the world. And I really
14:41.840 --> 14:45.034
hope that you listen to this. And I really hope you're listening to this either
14:45.534 --> 14:49.223
going, oh shit, I need to create that thing, or going, oh good,
14:49.319 --> 14:52.368
I've got that. And that is how I lead every single pitch, right?
14:52.898 --> 14:55.530
I don't try and convince anyone to work with me or I'm the best person.
14:56.140 --> 15:00.077
I say, hey, look, I might not be the best person, But I have created
15:00.577 --> 15:04.087
this free guide. I have created this free resource that shows you how we
15:04.587 --> 15:08.199
get these kinds of results for our clients, for people just like you.
15:08.346 --> 15:12.074
Here it is. Take a look. That simple.
15:12.204 --> 15:15.646
And it can be done in a video if you want to, but a PDF
15:16.146 --> 15:18.860
I think is great because it's something tangible. Um,
15:19.603 --> 15:22.735
and yeah, it's just honestly, it will probably take you a day's worth
15:22.783 --> 15:26.319
of work to unpack your process, to get your IP out,
15:26.464 --> 15:29.935
put it in some kind of form. And give it to people. And honestly,
15:30.208 --> 15:33.789
just watch how much more business that you
15:33.982 --> 15:37.980
win just by doing that. So that's
15:38.480 --> 15:41.689
my message to you on a Sunday night. That was my rant. Needed to be
15:42.189 --> 15:45.061
said. It needed to be said when it was fresh in my mind. And I
15:45.125 --> 15:49.284
hope that has kind of maybe shaken a few people up and
15:49.862 --> 15:53.411
made you think a little bit more about how you're selling yourself
15:53.911 --> 15:56.879
and how you're marketing your business. If you enjoyed this episode, share it with a
15:56.928 --> 16:00.107
friend, share it with somebody who, you know, hasn't got this thing right
16:00.171 --> 16:03.816
now. And hopefully my voice will whip them
16:04.073 --> 16:07.541
into action because ultimately my mission is to
16:08.199 --> 16:11.940
empower talented people like you. I know
16:12.021 --> 16:14.831
you're good at what you do. I know you're talented. I know you've got so
16:15.331 --> 16:18.813
much to offer the world, but you're making these silly fundamental
16:18.941 --> 16:20.932
little mistakes that are easy to fix.
16:22.008 --> 16:25.396
So that's why I'm so passionate about it. So please share this with someone.
16:25.444 --> 16:29.057
It's my mission to empower you to really go out
16:29.557 --> 16:33.408
into the world, solve meaningful problems, and step into your full potential.
