OM DENNE EPISODE
Seven years ago I met the man I was going to marry. I learned pretty quickly — because he is a very proud Black man — what I did not know.
I had spent most of my life in a very red, very white, very homogenous town. I knew I had gaps. I did not know how deep they were.
Four years later I started this podcast. Not because he asked me to — although he did. Because I needed to. For him. For our future kids. For my clients. For myself.
I want to tell you about the traffic stops in South Georgia. I have a speeding problem — had. And I would get pulled over regularly in small towns that were, let's say, not diverse. I would hand the deputy my license and my concealed carry permit. Every time, almost the same script: "Well boy, you got a gun in your car?" Yes sir. "Don't touch it, I'll be right back."
They would come back. They would reduce the speed I was actually going. Points off my license. Insurance rates untouched.
That is white privilege.
The other part of white privilege is that I never got pulled out of the car. I never had a gun drawn on me. I never had anything more than "don't touch it."
I knew something was wrong with that. I needed to understand why. That is why this show exists.
