OM DENNE EPISODE
Start with a rush of sand and sea spray: a man no chain can hold falls at Jesus’ feet, a woman reaches through a crowd for the hem of a garment, and a grieving home hears the words that turn mourning into movement. Mark 5 isn’t a collage of miracles; it’s a map of how holiness confronts everything we fear—spiritual oppression, chronic suffering, and death itself—and writes a different ending.
We break down the chapter’s three scenes and connect their shared heartbeat. In Gentile territory, the delivered man is told to tell his story widely, revealing how mission and context shape witness. Back among the Jews, Jesus hushes the news of a resurrection to keep messianic expectations from boiling over too soon. Between those moments, a trembling touch draws real power. We explore why that detail matters, how it echoes Old Testament patterns of cleansing, and what it means that Jesus reverses the flow: instead of uncleanness spreading, his holiness makes the unclean whole.
Along the way we wrestle with the pigs, the laughter, and the fear. Why allow demons into swine that race toward the cliffs? What does the crowd’s request for Jesus to leave say about our own comfort with the status quo? And why does Jesus call death “sleep,” inviting faith to see beyond the immediate? We highlight practical takeaways: pray as if Jesus truly holds authority over the spiritual and physical, share your testimony with wisdom about timing and audience, and obey the call to go home and tell what God has done—even when you’d rather cling close and stay safe.
If you’re navigating spiritual fog, persistent pain, or grief that feels final, Mark 5 offers more than inspiration—it offers a portrait of the Lord who restores minds, heals hidden wounds, and wakes sleepers. Press play, share this with a friend who needs hope, and if this encouraged you, subscribe, rate, and leave a review so others can find the conversation. Where do you need that cleansing, authoritative touch today?

00:00:10.880 --> 00:00:13.199
And welcome back to a chapter a day.
00:00:13.199 --> 00:00:14.160
Keeps the devil away.
00:00:14.160 --> 00:00:15.759
I'm Pastor Pleck, along with Pastor Holland.
00:00:15.759 --> 00:00:17.120
We're talking Mark chapter 5.
00:00:17.120 --> 00:00:18.000
We're going to outline it.
00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:24.480
We're going to find some uh in principles about the nature of man and the character of God.
00:00:24.480 --> 00:00:28.079
And then we are going to find a way to put that into practice.
00:00:28.079 --> 00:00:34.560
Okay, so first off, we got Mark 5, 1 through 20, the crazy story of the Garrison demoniac.
00:00:34.560 --> 00:00:38.640
And then you've got the woman with the issue of blood from 5, 21 through 34.
00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:44.799
And then you've got uh intermixed with this is the raising of Jairus' daughter.
00:00:44.799 --> 00:00:49.679
And then uh you have finally hold on, start over.
00:00:49.679 --> 00:00:51.200
Sorry, sorry, sorry.
00:00:51.200 --> 00:00:53.200
Okay.
00:00:53.200 --> 00:01:01.840
And welcome back to a chapter day.
00:01:03.759 --> 00:01:07.120
I just got something cut in my throat.
00:01:09.280 --> 00:01:10.959
All right, we're now here we go.
00:01:10.959 --> 00:01:11.760
Here we go.
00:01:11.760 --> 00:01:12.879
Here we go.
00:01:12.879 --> 00:01:18.640
And welcome back to a chapter day.
00:01:18.640 --> 00:01:19.599
Keeps the devil away.
00:01:19.599 --> 00:01:20.640
We're talking Mark chapter 5.
00:01:20.640 --> 00:01:24.000
I'm Pastor Plekman with Pastor Holland, and we're gonna outline it.
00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:35.439
We're gonna find some uh truths about the nature of man and the character of God, and finally put it to some application so that your day goes great today as you keep the devil away.
00:01:35.439 --> 00:01:45.120
So, first off, Mark 5, 1 through 20, we have the story of the Garrusine demoniac, crazy story of Jesus casting out the demon with a Hulk-like figure.
00:01:45.120 --> 00:02:03.680
Then you've got the woman with the issue of blood, and uh she's gonna be coming up, and uh she is intermingled in with uh the raising of Gyrus' daughter, but she comes up as um this huge story of Jairus coming up, says, Hey, uh heal my daughter.
00:02:03.680 --> 00:02:09.199
But in the middle of that, this woman with uh bleeding comes and asks for help and Jesus heals her.
00:02:09.199 --> 00:02:16.400
Finally, after that, Jairus' daughter is healed after she is pronounced dead, and that's 35 through 43.
00:02:16.400 --> 00:02:22.960
So um let's talk about some observations we've made about this text there, Han, about the incredible work of Jesus.
00:02:23.520 --> 00:02:39.680
These are awesome stories, and I think one of the most interesting things here is when the woman touches um Jesus' uh garment, and it says in verse 30, he perceived in himself that power had gone out from him.
00:02:39.680 --> 00:02:40.960
I'm like, that is so cool.
00:02:40.960 --> 00:02:48.000
Like it just she touched his garment, and power kind of just flowed out from Jesus to her.
00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:49.840
What do you make of that?
00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:50.639
Yeah.
00:02:50.960 --> 00:02:54.159
This wasn't Jesus seeking someone and saying, Be healed.
00:02:54.159 --> 00:02:55.919
This was her grabbing his garment.
00:02:55.919 --> 00:02:59.120
I don't know, that's an observation that's like some stolen power.
00:02:59.599 --> 00:03:00.080
I don't know.
00:03:00.080 --> 00:03:01.360
That that's that's wild, right?
00:03:01.360 --> 00:03:04.479
I I think it's really a powerful story that her faith was so great.
00:03:04.479 --> 00:03:16.479
Um now, obviously, Jesus knew she was coming, obviously Jesus knew all of that, but um, it's incredible that to see her um boldness to go and receive well and and she was unclean, right?
00:03:16.560 --> 00:03:19.199
Because she had this discharge of blood.
00:03:19.199 --> 00:03:25.360
And typically, an unclean person, if you touch someone who's clean, you make them unclean.
00:03:25.599 --> 00:03:26.719
But Jesus is the reverse.
00:03:26.879 --> 00:03:36.319
Yeah, she touched him, and instead of Jesus becoming unclean, impossible, he's the Lord, his power goes to he his cleanness cleanses her.
00:03:36.639 --> 00:03:38.159
So here's a wild thing.
00:03:38.159 --> 00:03:46.319
Um, in the old testament, there is, I think, only one thing that if you touch it, all the things that touch it become clean.
00:03:46.319 --> 00:03:54.960
And so I think that is is it the altar where they um burn the sacrifices, or is it the altar or the ark?
00:03:55.199 --> 00:04:02.719
Um where you touch it and you become clean.
00:04:02.719 --> 00:04:10.000
So it would be essentially Jesus would be the reality, the substance of that, which was a shadow.
00:04:10.319 --> 00:04:10.719
Right.
00:04:10.719 --> 00:04:12.319
It would be exactly so.
00:04:12.319 --> 00:04:40.000
I think in um uh and it wasn't like a person, usually, it was like the the bronze instruments or the the whatever that touched uh the um uh the whatever was, you know, whatever you're using to pr do the service, if it had been unclean at some point and it touched the altar, it became clean because it came in contact with something that was that holy.
00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:43.279
So that's that's uh I wish I could find that now.
00:04:43.279 --> 00:04:45.199
It makes me feel bad that I'm not pulling it up.
00:04:45.199 --> 00:04:49.920
Um some homework to the listeners, figure out what that is.
00:04:49.920 --> 00:04:51.600
Yeah, what was that?
00:04:51.600 --> 00:04:53.279
Uh let me see if whatever it is.
00:04:53.360 --> 00:05:04.000
Basically, Jesus is like the the true and better version of that, not just ceremonially, ceremonially making something clean, but actually giving a true healing to her.
00:05:04.079 --> 00:05:08.319
Um, what else did you like?
00:05:08.800 --> 00:05:23.519
Um, okay, so I also noticed with the um demon-possessed guy, yeah, when um he saves that guy, delivers him from the demons, he says, Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you.
00:05:23.519 --> 00:05:27.199
Um and he goes away and begins to proclaim in the decapitus how much Jesus.
00:05:27.199 --> 00:05:29.360
So you go, go tell everybody.
00:05:29.360 --> 00:05:38.879
But then when he heals the little girl, it says in the final verse, he strictly charged them that no one should know this and told him to give her something to eat.
00:05:38.879 --> 00:05:39.360
Okay.
00:05:39.360 --> 00:05:41.439
So what do you what's your thoughts?
00:05:41.439 --> 00:05:42.319
What why the difference?
00:05:42.319 --> 00:05:47.199
Why demoniac tell everyone, and why you know the little girl don't tell anyone?
00:05:47.439 --> 00:06:09.040
Yeah, I I think it was it was I think where it was with Jesus, um, there was no theological thing limiting the um here's what I mean, the the theological box that the Jews were in to receive the Messiah, he had to come with some certain prerequisites that everyone sort of wrapped their head around.
00:06:09.040 --> 00:06:14.879
And I don't think that he had felt that he had presented himself in a way that was ready for a messiah.
00:06:14.879 --> 00:06:16.079
That's the only thing I can think of.
00:06:16.079 --> 00:06:21.759
Whereas with the Gentiles, there is no, it's just the king of God's here.
00:06:21.759 --> 00:06:23.120
We've never seen anything like this.
00:06:23.120 --> 00:06:24.800
They were used to just the brokenness of the world.
00:06:25.040 --> 00:06:30.079
Yeah, so the difference being verse one, they came to the other side of the sea to the country of the Garrison.
00:06:30.079 --> 00:06:32.879
So now he's crossed the sea over into Gentile territory.
00:06:32.879 --> 00:06:33.360
Right.
00:06:33.360 --> 00:06:35.600
Among the Gentiles, he says, go tell everybody.
00:06:35.600 --> 00:06:36.000
Yeah.
00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:46.399
And then um, verse 21, when Jesus crossed again in the boat to the other side, so now he's back in Jewish um territory, uh, he says, Don't tell anyone.
00:06:46.399 --> 00:06:52.319
And so this is uh Gentiles, hey, go tell everybody, you know, um what God has done to you.
00:06:52.480 --> 00:06:54.800
And to be fair, the Gentiles and the Jews don't mix, right?
00:06:54.800 --> 00:07:09.040
So it's not like he's a f also like there's a prescribed timeline for Jesus to be crucified, and I think that might have had something with his name getting out too fast too quickly, um would have right, that would have been a problem.
00:07:09.360 --> 00:07:16.720
So among the Jewish people who had messianic expectations and um questions and things like that, he's kept a low profile.
00:07:16.720 --> 00:07:17.839
Um, don't tell anybody.
00:07:17.839 --> 00:07:19.519
But among the Gentiles, hey, go tell everybody.
00:07:19.519 --> 00:07:20.319
Yeah, it's wild.
00:07:20.480 --> 00:07:20.720
Yeah.
00:07:20.720 --> 00:07:29.519
And and I think people thought that uh either Jesus was being cryptic or um unfair to keep it to yourself.
00:07:29.519 --> 00:07:32.000
I've I've heard those uh frustrations.
00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:39.360
Um but I do think it's it's primarily because uh of who he was trying to reach and what he's trying to specifically do within Israel.
00:07:39.360 --> 00:07:40.079
Yeah.
00:07:40.079 --> 00:07:44.959
Um yeah, let's let's talk about um nature of man.
00:07:44.959 --> 00:07:48.319
Yeah, or what what about why how about this?
00:07:48.319 --> 00:07:51.360
Why do you think Jesus allowed the demons to enter the pigs?
00:07:51.360 --> 00:07:53.199
Like, what did that do for them?
00:07:53.199 --> 00:07:54.959
What did it do for the demons?
00:07:55.120 --> 00:07:58.319
Yeah, yeah, they seem to be like pretty stoked about that, right?
00:07:58.319 --> 00:07:58.720
Right.
00:07:58.720 --> 00:08:01.600
Um they begged him, saying, Send us to the pigs.
00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:05.199
But but like but once the pigs die, don't they have to find another spot?
00:08:05.199 --> 00:08:09.279
I don't know how that works in demonology once once that work.
00:08:09.279 --> 00:08:16.480
Once they once the pig dies, doesn't it's like given like another little maybe I just saw that one movie with Denzel Washington.
00:08:16.480 --> 00:08:19.120
They've got to find a new host somewhere.
00:08:19.519 --> 00:08:22.319
I don't think demons need a host, right?
00:08:22.319 --> 00:08:23.519
I know, yeah.
00:08:23.519 --> 00:08:31.040
Um and so uh demons can enter into like it talks about uh Satan entering into Judas, right?
00:08:31.040 --> 00:08:31.920
Later on in the gospel.
00:08:31.920 --> 00:08:33.120
Talk about wild.
00:08:33.120 --> 00:08:36.879
Um so demons can possess people, but don't have to.
00:08:36.960 --> 00:08:39.440
And so um Yeah, I was I was curious.
00:08:39.440 --> 00:08:44.720
I I kind of went to the old uh that Denzel what I can't remember what that movie was, but uh I don't even know.
00:08:44.720 --> 00:08:47.840
Book was it uh like the biblical fiction type.
00:08:47.840 --> 00:09:00.480
It was a prime movie that you know this this guy who was possessed by a demon murdered people, and then he, you know, the only way to get rid of the guy was to have him poison or die out there, and so Denzel ends up killing him.
00:09:00.480 --> 00:09:02.159
More homework for the listener.
00:09:02.480 --> 00:09:04.320
Find out what movie that was.
00:09:04.320 --> 00:09:10.240
Yeah, I don't know, but you know, Jesus, it doesn't really say why, it just Jesus gave him um permission.
00:09:10.240 --> 00:09:12.080
It does call them unclean spirits.
00:09:12.080 --> 00:09:18.639
We do know that pigs were ceremonially unclean animals, so there's a lot of uncleanness going on in this chapter.
00:09:18.639 --> 00:09:19.200
Yeah.
00:09:19.200 --> 00:09:25.360
Um and uh you see the unclean spirits entering the unclean pigs and taking them away to death.
00:09:25.360 --> 00:09:32.320
So it could be kind of a parable for um uh, you know, uncleanness leading to death.
00:09:32.320 --> 00:09:40.879
Um, and then, you know, juxtaposed with this unclean woman who touches Jesus and experiences life and healing.
00:09:40.879 --> 00:09:41.120
Yeah.
00:09:41.120 --> 00:09:48.159
So you do get a little bit of a juxtaposition there of um here here's what happens if uncleanness goes to it all its ultimate end.
00:09:48.159 --> 00:09:50.480
And here's what happens if uncleanness meets Jesus.
00:09:50.639 --> 00:09:50.879
Right.
00:09:51.039 --> 00:09:51.759
Which is pretty awesome.
00:09:51.759 --> 00:09:53.120
Speaking of uncleanness.
00:09:53.120 --> 00:09:53.440
Yeah.
00:09:53.600 --> 00:09:57.519
So have you ever heard of the water purification ashes of the red heifer?
00:09:57.759 --> 00:09:58.000
Yes.
00:09:58.240 --> 00:10:16.480
So if you came in contact with something dead, the only way to get clean was to be uh have like this water that had ashes of a red heifer, a type of cow, right, sprinkled on your sport on you, and then all the objects that were touched by that would become clean.
00:10:16.480 --> 00:10:21.440
So in a and that was a special purification that somebody touched something dead in the same way Jesus is life.
00:10:21.440 --> 00:10:24.879
What would touch what that was that bleeding was gonna kill that woman.
00:10:24.879 --> 00:10:25.200
Yeah.
00:10:25.200 --> 00:10:31.840
And she touches Jesus, and by her touching him, that curse of death is broken and she is given life.
00:10:31.840 --> 00:10:41.360
So anyway, I I think there's all these Old Testament references I always sort of get excited about because very rarely is there anything that, if you touched it, made you clean if you were unclean, and Jesus is that.
00:10:41.360 --> 00:10:41.679
Yeah.
00:10:41.679 --> 00:10:43.039
Um, anyway, okay.
00:10:43.039 --> 00:10:48.720
Um how about uh some truths about the nature of man?
00:10:48.720 --> 00:10:51.919
Um, man is vulnerable.
00:10:51.919 --> 00:10:52.879
Yeah.
00:10:52.879 --> 00:11:04.639
Oppression, fear, uh like the the people in the garrisons were like they were afraid after the guy's been delivered.
00:11:04.639 --> 00:11:07.600
So afraid they tell him to leave.
00:11:07.600 --> 00:11:09.039
Wild.
00:11:09.519 --> 00:11:10.080
Yeah.
00:11:10.080 --> 00:11:18.960
And um yeah, you see you see the nature of man as as a sinner, as an unclean person.
00:11:18.960 --> 00:11:27.519
You see that, you know, death is in our it is in our nature now as sinful people, um, that we die.
00:11:27.519 --> 00:11:35.039
Um the uncleanness, the spiritual sickness, you know, of the demons go into the pigs, lead them to death, they drown.
00:11:35.039 --> 00:11:42.559
Um, the woman's um you know, ceremonially unclean discharge of blood also would have led to physical death.
00:11:42.559 --> 00:11:45.519
Now you see the little girl whose disease led her to death.
00:11:45.519 --> 00:11:52.080
You see, all this um spiritual, physical, and ceremonial sickness and uncleanness leading to death.
00:11:52.080 --> 00:11:58.159
And then in the midst of it, you see Jesus setting people free, healing, and giving life.
00:11:58.159 --> 00:11:59.279
Okay, what about this?
00:11:59.519 --> 00:12:00.480
Pretty awesome.
00:12:00.480 --> 00:12:08.159
The people laugh at Jesus when he and he says the girl's not dead but only sleeping, and they laugh at him.
00:12:08.159 --> 00:12:11.200
Um, and I it's sometimes I'm like, are they laughing at death?
00:12:11.200 --> 00:12:12.399
Are they laughing at Jesus?
00:12:12.399 --> 00:12:19.200
Or is it is it a nervous laughter because uh it's too um incredible?
00:12:19.200 --> 00:12:20.159
What is that?
00:12:20.159 --> 00:12:21.360
What is that laughter?
00:12:21.360 --> 00:12:33.440
And uh just about men is like when we don't know what to do with it, we either we have some sort of emotional reaction of fear, we scoff at it, laugh at it, um, because we don't know what to do with it.
00:12:33.440 --> 00:12:37.200
There's a category that doesn't fit for us, and Jesus is that category for many people.
00:12:37.200 --> 00:12:38.080
Yeah.
00:12:38.080 --> 00:12:41.200
What about the character of God?
00:12:42.559 --> 00:12:48.480
He's a deliverer, a healer, a savior, a resurrector of life.
00:12:48.480 --> 00:12:51.360
You see all of that in these couple of stories.
00:12:51.679 --> 00:12:52.000
Yeah.
00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:55.360
How about he has authority over the spiritual and the physical?
00:12:55.600 --> 00:12:56.240
Yeah.
00:12:57.279 --> 00:13:01.600
Um, and I I love this one.
00:13:01.600 --> 00:13:04.960
How about Jesus responds to personal faith?
00:13:04.960 --> 00:13:05.840
That's good.
00:13:05.840 --> 00:13:09.679
Uh, no matter how hidden or how desperate.
00:13:09.679 --> 00:13:14.000
How about some uh application?
00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:20.080
So there's you know, sin to avoid, a promise to claim, example to follow, a command obey, or knowledge to believe.
00:13:20.080 --> 00:13:23.120
Which one would you pick out here for one of our listeners?
00:13:23.440 --> 00:13:27.759
Man, knowledge to believe, Jesus can heal, Jesus can save.
00:13:27.759 --> 00:13:32.240
Uh, you know, what you brought up, he has authority over the spiritual and over the physical.
00:13:32.240 --> 00:13:36.960
Um, that's some knowledge to believe and apply faithfully to the way that you pray.
00:13:37.200 --> 00:13:37.840
Yeah.
00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:42.720
Um, one of the things I loved here for an example to follow, the man just wanted to be with Jesus.
00:13:42.720 --> 00:13:43.440
Yeah.
00:13:43.440 --> 00:13:44.879
Uh the healed one.
00:13:44.879 --> 00:13:46.799
And then Jesus is like, nah.
00:13:46.960 --> 00:13:47.279
Yeah.
00:13:47.279 --> 00:13:47.919
Go.
00:13:47.919 --> 00:13:50.240
And and that's an example to follow.
00:13:50.240 --> 00:13:50.480
Yeah.
00:13:50.480 --> 00:13:51.279
Go and tell.
00:13:51.279 --> 00:13:52.080
Tell.
00:13:52.080 --> 00:13:52.399
Yeah.
00:13:52.399 --> 00:13:53.360
Um, and he does.
00:13:53.360 --> 00:13:57.360
He went away and began to proclaim in the decapolis how much Jesus had done for him.
00:13:57.519 --> 00:13:58.080
So he obeyed.
00:13:58.080 --> 00:13:59.759
I think that's a great example to follow.
00:13:59.759 --> 00:14:07.440
And it's a one of like when your one hope is that you get to be with Jesus, and Jesus is like, nope, I still have work for you to do in your hometown.
00:14:07.440 --> 00:14:08.240
Yeah.
00:14:08.240 --> 00:14:09.200
All right.
00:14:09.200 --> 00:14:10.639
Hey, thanks so much for watching.
00:14:10.639 --> 00:14:13.679
We'll see you next time on a chapter a day.
