In this 30-minute talk given at the Silent Ground, Speaking Heart retreat in Massachusetts in August 2025, teacher Patrick Kennyo Dunn teaches us about the five qualities of Jizo Bosatsu, otherwise known as Ksitigarbha, a bodhisattva known for his vow to return to the hell-realms as a friend and protector. From his origins in pre-buddhist mythology to his gender-ambiguous and monastic incarnations, Kennyo’s exposition of Jizo’s qualities and activities shows how Jizo can remind us of the buddha-nature of all beings, including ourselves.
