Tom Anderson (12s)
Hello and welcome to Basic AF, a fresh new episode.

Tom Anderson (15s)
Tom Anderson and Jeff Battersby together once again.

Tom Anderson (18s)
Hello, Jeff.

Jeff Battersby (19s)
Good morning, Tom. How are you?

Tom Anderson (21s)
I'm doing well, yourself.

Jeff Battersby (22s)
Good. I'm doing great.

Jeff Battersby (25s)
I, as I said before,

Jeff Battersby (27s)
although nobody will hear it,

I'm not buying anything,

I did, and we will talk about that a bit later, but not a whole lot.

Hello, Joe Moyer!

We are pleased to welcome Joe Moyer to the show.

Joe Moyer (55s)
Hey guys, thanks for having me.

Jeff Battersby (56s)
Joe, thanks for coming along man and

Joe Moyer (58s)
Yeah, my pleasure.

Jeff Battersby (1m)
We have been trying to get you on for a little minute, but you're a busy man outside of you know this podcasting business so

Jeff Battersby (1m 9s)
But you uh what we want to start with and what we had intended to do until Apple threw a wrench in our works

Jeff Battersby (1m 16s)
was to talk a little bit about you and

Jeff Battersby (1m 19s)
What it is you do you are known on?

Jeff Battersby (1m 23s)
I don't know what platforms you're on.

Jeff Battersby (1m 26s)
Why don't we just let you tell us who you are and what you do and where you are and all the platforms you are and what you're doing, and then we'll jump on.

Joe Moyer (1m 33s)
Okay, great.

Joe Moyer (1m 34s)
Yeah, so I write a lot about journaling.

Joe Moyer (1m 38s)
So you're gonna predominantly find me on threads.

Joe Moyer (1m 41s)
I was a day one user on threads.

Joe Moyer (1m 45s)
So I started really thinking about journaling a couple of years ago.

Joe Moyer (1m 49s)
My second child was born and I had a little free time 'cause I took some parental leave.

Joe Moyer (1m 55s)
And then I ended up staying home to be a stay-at-home dad, taking a little break.

Joe Moyer (1m 58s)
So, you know, there's a lot of joy in that,

Joe Moyer (2m)
but there's also a lot of challenges.

Joe Moyer (2m 4s)
I've been working for a long time,

Joe Moyer (2m 4s)
had a lot of connections and relationships,

Joe Moyer (2m 6s)
and I found that kind of revisiting my journaling practice was super helpful in working through all the great and more challenging things that come with being a dad.

Joe Moyer (2m 19s)
So I decided to start writing about it online because it occurred to me that I don't think I've met anyone who wouldn't benefit from some sort of journaling practice because it's, yeah, it's really just taking time to reflect.

Joe Moyer (2m 33s)
So yeah, when Threads launched, I jumped on as the journaling guide.

Joe Moyer (2m 38s)
And post a fair amount about Apple there too, because I can't just count myself.

Joe Moyer (2m 43s)
But try to share some prompts and some ideas around how easy it is to journal.

Joe Moyer (2m 50s)
It really doesn't take that much time or that much effort.

Joe Moyer (2m 53s)
You don't have to have a fancy notebook.

Joe Moyer (2m 54s)
You don't have to light a candle.

Joe Moyer (2m 55s)
You can take five minutes, grab a piece of printer paper, and do your thing.

Jeff Battersby (2m 56s)
I was gonna say, I've already invested in a lot of candles, man, I don't know.

Joe Moyer (3m 3s)
Also light the candle if you want, but I would really, I think the candles are great.

Joe Moyer (3m 8s)
You know, like it's all about the, I think it's all about the message and not the medium, but so maybe you start off with a printer paper and you graduate to the fancy journal and the candles and the cup of tea.

Joe Moyer (3m 23s)
So, and I've been blogging for a couple years.

Joe Moyer (3m 26s)
I was a blogger in the beginning of the 2000s.

Joe Moyer (3m 30s)
In fact, the local newspaper ran a story.

Joe Moyer (3m 33s)
on me because I couldn't find anyone else to talk about it because there just weren't very many of us.

Joe Moyer (3m 38s)
So yeah, that's called 24 Letters and I write over there about journaling,

Joe Moyer (3m 43s)
productivity, and personal development. So I'm thrilled to be with you guys.

Jeff Battersby (3m 47s)
Well, we're thrilled to have you and we are going to do, as long as you're willing and interested to come back, we're going to do a whole episode on journaling because we do have questions and we definitely have some interest in that, and that was the original intent to bring you on to talk about what it is that you do and what it is that you're trying to encourage others to do.

Jeff Battersby (4m 13s)
But Apple had an event on Monday.

Jeff Battersby (4m 15s)
Or Tuesday.

Jeff Battersby (4m 18s)
I don't know what day.

Jeff Battersby (4m 19s)
Monday, Monday, Monday.

Jeff Battersby (4m 22s)
And so we asked if you'd be willing to come on and talk about all of that.

Jeff Battersby (4m 27s)
So that's where we are headed today.

Joe Moyer (4m 31s)
I'm glad to be here for that, got plenty of notes.

Jeff Battersby (4m 31s)
We're gonna talk about Apple event.

Jeff Battersby (4m 34s)
And we'll tease another thing that may be coming up with Joe, is we may be talking about Apple TV+ content going forward as well.

Jeff Battersby (4m 44s)

Jeff Battersby (4m 45s)

Jeff Battersby (4m 47s)
I probably popped really hard when I said "but" right there.

Jeff Battersby (4m 51s)
Let's talk a little bit about Apple's event the other day, on Monday.

Glowtime!

Tom Anderson (4m 57s)
You're just going with the other day now, huh?

Jeff Battersby (4m 59s)
Yeah, well, you know, I'm lost in time, right?

Joe Moyer (5m)
previously. [laughs]

Jeff Battersby (5m 3s)
I have no idea where I am or what I'm doing, which is kind of true.

Jeff Battersby (5m 7s)
Yeah, so let's talk about Monday's event and some of the announcements.

Tom Anderson (5m 7s)
Okay.

Jeff Battersby (5m 11s)
And why don't you kick it off?

Tom Anderson (5m 12s)
Let's do it.

Tom Anderson (5m 13s)
All right.

Tom Anderson (5m 14s)
So the Glowtime event was on Monday, September 9th, which was a week ago as this episode you're listening to is released.

Tom Anderson (5m 25s)
and it's Apple's annual iPhone.

Tom Anderson (5m 27s)
So yeah, it is.

Jeff Battersby (5m 29s)
Correct.

Jeff Battersby (5m 32s)
Yeah, fair question. That is a fair question.

Jeff Battersby (5m 35s)
So...

Tom Anderson (5m 36s)
So, uh, before we get too deep into it, uh, I know we've all watched it, uh, impressions overall, Joe, what'd you think?

Joe Moyer (5m 45s)
So, you know, they released an iPhone.

Joe Moyer (5m 48s)
It's pretty cool.

Joe Moyer (5m 49s)
They released some headphones, which are great, but I really can't help but think that Apple is becoming way more focused on services, which is something we all hear them talking about a lot.

Joe Moyer (6m 1s)
I think this quarter maybe their services almost made as much as their hardware did.

Joe Moyer (6m 6s)
So I think the story they're trying to kind of push is the hardware is great.

Joe Moyer (6m 10s)
It gets a little better every year, but they're looking at accessibility, health.

Joe Moyer (6m 15s)
And safety with some of the new features, which I think are kind of exciting actually.

Joe Moyer (6m 19s)
And it's a good way to define themselves in the market.

Joe Moyer (6m 22s)
But overall, you know, it was a pretty low-key event, I thought.

Joe Moyer (6m 26s)
It was, you know, nothing revolutionary, just a bunch of new updates, iterative year over

Tom Anderson (6m 33s)
Yeah, yeah, I tend to agree.

Tom Anderson (6m 34s)
I think the thing is pretty much everything at this point that is part of this event in particular is pretty mature, right?

Tom Anderson (6m 44s)
I mean, Apple Watch is up to series 10,

Tom Anderson (6m 46s)
iPhone 16, AirPods have been around for quite a while.

Tom Anderson (6m 51s)
And I just don't think we're gonna see those groundbreaking hardware developments that we used to see, you know,

Tom Anderson (6m 59s)
in the early editions of these things.

Tom Anderson (7m 3s)
Apple, of course, they know that,

Tom Anderson (7m 5s)
but I think if you look at it with these incremental updates,

Tom Anderson (7m 9s)
if somebody's on, say, the iPhone 10 still,

Tom Anderson (7m 12s)
and they're upgrading to an iPhone 16 or 16 Pro,

Tom Anderson (7m 16s)
pretty significant jump.

Tom Anderson (7m 18s)
But for the enthusiasts who tend to upgrade more frequently,

Tom Anderson (7m 22s)
I think they're smaller leaps.

Jeff Battersby (7m 25s)

Same feelings, and here's the thing,

Jeff Battersby (7m 29s)
I'm never disappointed by that.

Jeff Battersby (7m 31s)
Apple has a solid hardware platform,

Jeff Battersby (7m 33s)
I think our desire to have some amazing new innovation

Jeff Battersby (7m 39s)
is sometimes misses the point of what's really going on

Jeff Battersby (7m 45s)
underneath the hood.

Jeff Battersby (7m 46s)
Those pro models, I think, for the first time are truly models for professionals.

Jeff Battersby (7m 55s)
The video that they did with The Weeknd,

Jeff Battersby (7m 57s)
and what was filmed entirely on an iPhone,

Jeff Battersby (8m 1s)
the whole event technically filmed on an iPhone,

Jeff Battersby (8m 7s)
the audio capabilities that are now built into the pro models, really amazing.

Jeff Battersby (8m 13s)
Whether or not they're something that I need is a fair question, we'll talk about that going,

Jeff Battersby (8m 21s)
as we kind of dig in a little further in this episode.

Jeff Battersby (8m 25s)
But I'm not, I could be a regular iPhone person

Jeff Battersby (8m 33s)
coming up in the next version.

Jeff Battersby (8m 34s)
One thing I will say that was impressive to me is for the most part, you know,

Jeff Battersby (8m 39s)
Sansa camera lens on the 16,

Jeff Battersby (8m 44s)
there's a lot of parody that they're putting into those basic models.

Jeff Battersby (8m 49s)
You know, everybody has the fancy new button,

Jeff Battersby (8m 51s)
which we'll talk about more,

Jeff Battersby (8m 52s)
which I really like.

Jeff Battersby (8m 56s)
As an amateur photographer,

Jeff Battersby (8m 58s)
someone who takes a lot of photographs with my phone,

Jeff Battersby (9m)
those are really nice features.

Jeff Battersby (9m 3s)
The fact that it can be tied to apps like Halide,

Jeff Battersby (9m 6s)
and it's not merely Apple's built-in camera is good stuff.

Jeff Battersby (9m 11s)
So I was not in the market for anything.

Jeff Battersby (9m 16s)
I knew that going into this thing,

Jeff Battersby (9m 20s)
this event, and I'm okay with it.

Jeff Battersby (9m 23s)
And I really kind of like what's going on.

Jeff Battersby (9m 25s)
Hardware-wise, even though the look, the feel, the size, all that stuff has changed.

Tom Anderson (9m 33s)
Okay, so let's go through the

AirPods

Tom Anderson (9m 36s)
Announcements shall we we'll go through them in order

Jeff Battersby (9m 37s)
Sure, let's do it

Tom Anderson (9m 39s)
Let's start with Airpods

Tom Anderson (9m 42s)
Airpods for we've got two versions of those

Jeff Battersby (9m 44s)
-Correct. -Yep.

Tom Anderson (9m 46s)
With and without active noise cancellation listening modes were added

Tom Anderson (9m 50s)
And I think some of the gestures

Jeff Battersby (9m 53s)
I think that is correct.

Tom Anderson (9m 54s)
Yeah, we're there too and what 129 149 I think are the price for those I think okay

Jeff Battersby (10m)
I could double check that as we're sitting here, but I believe that that is, it might be 129, 179.

Tom Anderson (10m 3s)
Yeah, it's somewhere in that ballpark. I thought I saw this morning. Somebody was yeah, it could be is it? Okay All right.

Jeff Battersby (10m 7s)
But let me just, yeah, I think it is too.

Jeff Battersby (10m 11s)
But yeah, and, and the thing about that is, I mean, whether or not they needed two levels in the AirPods 4, I don't know.

Jeff Battersby (10m 19s)
That's definitely, that's definitely.

Jeff Battersby (10m 24s)
The Active Noise Cancellation features are brilliant and they need those, that they all support the new gestures is great, you know, that's a nice, that's a nice add to something that was already really pretty good.

Jeff Battersby (10m 39s)
So, yeah, I, I like both of those options on the AirPods 4.

Jeff Battersby (10m 47s)
Joe, how about you, any, any thoughts?

Joe Moyer (10m 52s)
I was curious why they had the two different versions, maybe it's just so they can really have a kind of an entry-level AirPod model for people who just want to have the simple features.

Joe Moyer (11m 3s)
I think active noise cancellation coming to them is great.

Joe Moyer (11m 7s)
My basic AirPods are like five years old, so these were actually pretty interesting to me.

Joe Moyer (11m 13s)
But, yeah, I think it's a reasonable update and it was kind of overdue.

Tom Anderson (11m 20s)
Yep, and we also have some software updates for AirPods Pro 2

Tom Anderson (11m 26s)
And this is interesting. So this goes back to what we were saying there a few minutes ago. I think

Tom Anderson (11m 31s)
Joe mentioned it Jeff you may have to with some of the the software

Tom Anderson (11m 35s)
Features around health and safety and things like that. So they've added

Tom Anderson (11m 40s)
I think it's coming. It's not out yet, but there will be a hearing test

Tom Anderson (11m 45s)
function that they've added to the AirPods through software and they quoted some numbers there.

Tom Anderson (11m 50s)
with the number of people who actually do have some type of hearing loss and it's not an insignificant number of people. A lot of us went to a lot of rock shows back in the day without proper ear protection, so I wouldn't be surprised on that list. So that looked interesting and then they

Tom Anderson (12m 8s)
pre-announced the hearing aids feature and said that was pending approval or authorization from the FDA and that just happened yesterday I think it was or the day before. So they're all clear for for that. That is...

Jeff Battersby (12m 17s)
Yeah, yeah

Tom Anderson (12m 20s)
is very interesting to me.

Jeff Battersby (12m 22s)
It's huge that So let's let's just put this into a little bit of context and just as a shout-out to Adam Jones who was on the show a couple weeks back

Jeff Battersby (12m 33s)
I was on his

Jeff Battersby (12m 35s)
Immediately following the the event. I was on his video on his YouTube channel and we were talking about this

Jeff Battersby (12m 44s)
and they had not have gotten approval.

Jeff Battersby (12m 47s)
at the point in time that we recorded,

Jeff Battersby (12m 49s)
but hearing aids are bloody expensive.

Jeff Battersby (12m 51s)
And up until a couple of years ago,

Jeff Battersby (12m 53s)
hearing aids were a thing that you needed a prescription from a doctor, you needed to be able to, you know,

Jeff Battersby (12m 59s)
go to the doctor, do some audiology testing,

Jeff Battersby (13m 2s)
which you should be doing anyway.

Jeff Battersby (13m 5s)
And then you had to get approval,

Jeff Battersby (13m 8s)
and then you paid big money to be able to get a hearing aid.

Jeff Battersby (13m 14s)
This is amazing in terms of--

Jeff Battersby (13m 17s)
of how accessible it will make this.

Jeff Battersby (13m 19s)
Of course, I guess you have to have an iPhone.

Jeff Battersby (13m 21s)
So that goes along with this.

Jeff Battersby (13m 23s)
That kind of increases the expense a little bit.

Jeff Battersby (13m 26s)
But the fact, if you already have an iPhone,

Jeff Battersby (13m 29s)
the fact that you can, you know,

Jeff Battersby (13m 30s)
plug in some AirPods Pro 2 into your ears and have the ability to bring up audio in the room or people that are talking to you, that's big stuff.

Jeff Battersby (13m 43s)
And one of the things I said to Adam on his show was,

Jeff Battersby (13m 45s)
You know, there are a lot...

Jeff Battersby (13m 47s)
of issues that come along with hearing loss. Depression is one of them because you're not in the conversation. You can't hear anything. You don't know what's going on. There are some indications and some studies that are stating that some issues related to dementia are involved with

Jeff Battersby (14m 5s)
hearing loss. So this is a huge thing that if you already have an iPhone, it's going to make it very easy for you to upgrade your hearing capabilities.

Jeff Battersby (14m 17s)
out having to fork out, you know, thousands of dollars for for hearing aids.

Jeff Battersby (14m 23s)
So big stuff as far as I'm concerned.

Joe Moyer (14m 26s)
Yeah, I think the number was 1.5 billion people have hearing loss.

Joe Moyer (14m 30s)
I mean, it's, so it's a massive market, but it's also, I was talking to a friend who has had hearing aids for a long time and he echoed exactly what you said, Jeff, they're expensive.

Joe Moyer (14m 42s)
There's a little bit of a stigma, you know, you're just mumbling.

Joe Moyer (14m 45s)
I don't have hearing problems.

Joe Moyer (14m 48s)
So I think that this is a really cool feature.

Joe Moyer (14m 51s)
Like it's not something I would have expected, but I think it's a really great feature.

Jeff Battersby (14m 55s)
Truly, and let me bring up something else as well.

Jeff Battersby (14m 59s)
I don't know if, are either of you doing any of the research that you can do, medical research that you can do in the health app on your phones?

Jeff Battersby (15m 9s)
Okay, so one of the features that I have tinnitus,

Jeff Battersby (15m 14s)
have had for a long time in my youth.

Jeff Battersby (15m 17s)
I was a carpenter, and even worse than concerts,

Jeff Battersby (15m 20s)
you know, going to concerts with unprotected ears.

Jeff Battersby (15m 25s)
You know, we used to saw a lot of wood with unprotected ears.

Jeff Battersby (15m 30s)
So I, you know, I have had tinnitus probably for 15 years,

Jeff Battersby (15m 35s)
10 to 15 years, somewhere in there where it started showing up.

Jeff Battersby (15m 38s)
And so I've been doing the hearing testing that was already built into that research app.

Jeff Battersby (15m 43s)
The fact that this is now something that'll be part of,

Jeff Battersby (15m 47s)
I presume, the next update, not the current,

Jeff Battersby (15m 49s)
you know, the version, or maybe it will be in the version that drops when this recording drops,

Jeff Battersby (15m 55s)
of iOS.

Jeff Battersby (15m 57s)
But it's amazing to be able to have that and to get some feedback.

Jeff Battersby (16m 2s)
When you're doing research, all it says is,

Jeff Battersby (16m 4s)
"Thanks for researching with us,"

Jeff Battersby (16m 6s)
and, you know, collects that information.

Jeff Battersby (16m 8s)
So to get some feedback as to the level of hearing loss,

Jeff Battersby (16m 11s)
and presumably they're gonna say,

Jeff Battersby (16m 12s)
"Listen, you need to go see your audiologist "or do something of that nature."

Jeff Battersby (16m 16s)
But these are some powerful tools in your hand.

Jeff Battersby (16m 19s)
And when you say, "Joe, no stigma,"

Jeff Battersby (16m 21s)
nobody's gonna say anything to you if you have AirPods in your ears.

Jeff Battersby (16m 26s)
Right, you look like half the people walking down the street.

Tom Anderson (16m 28s)
Other than are you listening to what I'm saying?

Jeff Battersby (16m 33s)
What?

Tom Anderson (16m 33s)
Which I did see people in comments

Jeff Battersby (16m 36s)
Bye bye.

Tom Anderson (16m 36s)
Which you're not supposed to read the comments, but I did

Tom Anderson (16m 39s)
That that have hearing aids and they they were interested in just like the concept and trying it But they were like because hearing aids have come a long way to being very discreet

Tom Anderson (16m 52s)
And they were concerned that if I have the air pods in

Tom Anderson (16m 58s)
I think I'm ignoring them for one

Tom Anderson (17m)
And then to you know the battery

Tom Anderson (17m 5s)
Life for those if they're actively on which they would have to be to do this how long would would that last but again?

Tom Anderson (17m 11s)
I think it's a win I think you might just have to see how well it works for some people who actually try it my dad's got

Tom Anderson (17m 17s)
Some pretty significant hearing issues, and I'm tempted to

Tom Anderson (17m 21s)
See if he wants to try that out

Tom Anderson (17m 24s)
And again, there's the other side of that is I'm curious to see how Apple handles

Tom Anderson (17m 28s)
some of the tuning for those because there are different types of hearing loss with different frequencies and things like that.

Tom Anderson (17m 35s)
And that's what you get with the specialist, right?

Tom Anderson (17m 38s)
They really kind of dial it in for exactly what you need.

Tom Anderson (17m 41s)
Sure, they probably are doing some of that with software, but be curious to see what people say when those are actually available.

Jeff Battersby (17m 49s)
Yeah, it's gonna be it's gonna be great and Tom we all know that if you do have earbuds in you are not listening to us

Joe Moyer (17m 57s)
Naturally.

Jeff Battersby (17m 58s)
Yeah

Tom Anderson (17m 59s)
Did you say something?

Tom Anderson (18m 4s)
The AirPods Max got the minimum.

Tom Anderson (18m 7s)
They got a USB-C port and some new colors.

Jeff Battersby (18m 12s)
Yeah, and you can buy some replacement cups if you want to so yeah

Tom Anderson (18m 12s)
And that's about it.

Tom Anderson (18m 15s)
Correct.

Tom Anderson (18m 16s)
Hey, accessorize, name of the game.

Jeff Battersby (18m 20s)
Absolutely, yeah, so USB see whoo-hoo great stuff

Tom Anderson (18m 20s)
All right, Jeff, yeah.

Tom Anderson (18m 24s)
You wanna kick off the watch discussion for us?

Jeff Battersby (18m 26s)
Yeah, so Apple releases Apple watch series 10

Apple Watch

Jeff Battersby (18m 29s)
Amazing that we're that far along in this game that we've now have that many of them. So bigger screen thinnest ever

Jeff Battersby (18m 37s)
Is what they're saying? I've yet to put my fingers on one of these

Jeff Battersby (18m 41s)
wide angle OLED display

Jeff Battersby (18m 44s)
Which supposedly is brighter and gives you better angle, you know the ability to view that

Jeff Battersby (18m 49s)
a little better, so that's kind of interesting. Love this sleep apnea detection, which also available in the Ultra Watch 2, the Apple Ultra 2. I'm hoping it shows up on my Ultra, but I suspect that it will not, so the initial one won't. But that sleep apnea detection, so Apple,

Tom Anderson (19m 6s)
Yes, I think we're out of luck

Jeff Battersby (19m 10s)
if you're not aware, and Tom's the one who made me aware of this, if you wear a watch to bed,

Jeff Battersby (19m 16s)
It tracks, does an amazing job of tracking.

Jeff Battersby (19m 19s)
Your REM, what your breathing is, all these things that are going on.

Jeff Battersby (19m 23s)
Uh, but sleep apnea is actually a potential, um, health danger issue.

Jeff Battersby (19m 29s)
Uh, if you've got sleep apnea.

Jeff Battersby (19m 31s)
So if it is able to pick up, uh, the fact that you have sleep apnea, then obviously you want to go to a specialist and, you know, get, get something on that.

Jeff Battersby (19m 40s)
But that's really good.

Jeff Battersby (19m 41s)
Translate app built into the watch now.

Jeff Battersby (19m 44s)
Phenomenal.

Jeff Battersby (19m 45s)
Um, you know, translate app has been on your phone for a minute.

Jeff Battersby (19m 49s)
And you've got the ability to have someone speak to you in whatever language it is that they speak and have it translate that directly back.

Jeff Battersby (19m 57s)
That now is going to be available on the watch smart stacks, which I've been using faster screen refresh every second, which is crazy.

Jeff Battersby (20m 4s)
Um, and this is new in, in, in the notes, Tom is being a smarty pants.

Joe Moyer (20m 9s)
I think that was me.

Tom Anderson (20m 10s)
It wasn't me, see Joe fits right in.

Jeff Battersby (20m 14s)
I was going to say something else.

Joe Moyer (20m 15s)
That was me.

Jeff Battersby (20m 15s)
Oh, was that you?

Joe Moyer (20m 16s)
Yeah, that was me.

Jeff Battersby (20m 17s)
Oh, okay.

Joe Moyer (20m 18s)
Yeah, yeah, a little editorial.

Jeff Battersby (20m 19s)
Who's who's updating this?

Jeff Battersby (20m 21s)
Yeah, he does.

Jeff Battersby (20m 22s)
He's, he's right in with the crew.

Jeff Battersby (20m 25s)
So you can play podcasts or music right from the speaker on your, on your watch,

Jeff Battersby (20m 29s)
which is great.

Jeff Battersby (20m 30s)
And, uh, Joe is quick to point out, which is great for driving the people around you crazy.

Tom Anderson (20m 37s)
You know, and there have been times I've wanted to do that, like, not many, but there've been a couple where I was like, "Can I just, real quick, I need to hear something."

Jeff Battersby (20m 37s)
True, true.

Joe Moyer (20m 38s)
but it's a feature, we gotta talk about it, it's a feature.

Jeff Battersby (20m 40s)
It is a feature, right?

Jeff Battersby (20m 42s)
And to some people it's a bug.

Jeff Battersby (20m 46s)
Yeah.

Joe Moyer (20m 47s)
Yeah, it totally makes sense that it will work, and hopefully it will sound pretty decent,

Tom Anderson (20m 52s)
And so, it'd be great for that.

Joe Moyer (20m 57s)
so we can do that and also drive people around us crazy as well.

Tom Anderson (21m 1s)
Yeah, it's just bonus round for you.

Jeff Battersby (21m 1s)
Well I'm good at doing that anyway, so I can do that without any noises coming out of my watch.

Jeff Battersby (21m 8s)
So yeah, very nice stuff.

Jeff Battersby (21m 12s)
Either of you in the market for this particular device?

Joe Moyer (21m 18s)
So I have a Series 8.

Joe Moyer (21m 21s)
I would love an upgrade, but I think I'm going to hold off for a little while longer.

Joe Moyer (21m 28s)
It's interesting that it's actually bigger than the Ultra, but I'm probably going to hold off at least for a few months, maybe, you know, maybe on the holidays I can put it on my list.

Joe Moyer (21m 39s)
How about you guys?

Tom Anderson (21m 40s)
Yep. Yeah, just a smidge bigger than the Ultra and it's interesting they were showing some of the comparisons between the Series 10 and the Series 9 and it looks like the bezel on the 10 is slightly bigger than on the 9, but overall because of the way they stretched it out or whatever they call it, it's still bigger, but yeah I still got the Ultra 1 or have the ultra one and I'm going to stick with that.

Joe Moyer (21m 42s)
Yeah.

Tom Anderson (22m 10s)
battery health on it is still like an 89% so I should easily be good for another year and see what comes up with the ultra three.

Tom Anderson (22m 19s)
Ultra two, which I segue right into that they did not do an ultra three this year they stayed with the ultra two but came out with a new satin black color.

Jeff Battersby (22m 24s)
Nope. And baby, does that look good? Yeah, that that looks so good. Yeah. Yes. Yeah.

Joe Moyer (22m 33s)
Yeah, that was problematic when I saw that, I had to just put the wallet away, even though I couldn't pre-order it yet.

Joe Moyer (22m 39s)
Because the reality distortion field was real, yeah.

Tom Anderson (22m 45s)
Yeah, yeah, I just think how many pictures did you and I send back and forth, Jeff?

Tom Anderson (22m 49s)
Especially that one with the tan band.

Tom Anderson (22m 51s)
I was like, Ooh, baby, that looks good.

Jeff Battersby (22m 54s)
Tan band dark mode, you know, when it's when it's got the orange, you know, the the night vision view and it's like, okay, take my money, but nobody's going to take my money.

Tom Anderson (23m 1s)
Mm-hmm

Tom Anderson (23m 4s)
Yeah, so I want to cuz you're not gonna give it to them, but they would take it if you did I'd take it

Joe Moyer (23m 4s)
Yeah, they're waiting.

Jeff Battersby (23m 8s)
Yeah, of course they would.

Joe Moyer (23m 11s)
You can do it right now if you want Jeff, we'll wait.

Jeff Battersby (23m 13s)
I well, here's here's the note. No, thank you. But everybody knows I'm holding out for, you know, some kind of ring or something a little less watchy.

Jeff Battersby (23m 24s)
Don't know that I'll ever get that. But it's still not 100% on the watch bandwagon. Like it, I like it for what I use it for, which is, you know, as I've said a million times a million places, hiking, getting, you know, making sure that I'm getting the exercise that I need to and love it for Apple Fitness Plus. Don't use Apple Fitness Plus that much in the summer months because I can hike and do stuff like that.

Jeff Battersby (23m 51s)
But in the winter, great.

Jeff Battersby (23m 54s)
It's great to have, so I'm happy about that.

Jeff Battersby (23m 57s)
But yeah, I'm holding.

Tom Anderson (24m 1s)
Oh, never mind, put a ring on it, Jeff.

Jeff Battersby (24m 4s)
Tom, you gonna give me a ring?

Jeff Battersby (24m 6s)
Oh, Tommy. I love you too.

Joe Moyer (24m 7s)
Took me a second, guys.

Jeff Battersby (24m 9s)
Yeah, right.

Joe Moyer (24m 9s)
This is a very sweet moment, I'm glad I could be here.

Jeff Battersby (24m 11s)
Yeah, you were here for it.

Tom Anderson (24m 13s)
Joe's like, yeah, my internet's about to go out.

Jeff Battersby (24m 13s)
You saw it.

Tom Anderson (24m 15s)
Sorry guys.

Jeff Battersby (24m 19s)
Totally different show.

Joe Moyer (24m 20s)
Mm-hmm.

Tom Anderson (24m 21s)
Yeah.

Jeff Battersby (24m 21s)
It's a new show.

Tom Anderson (24m 22s)
Yeah.

Tom Anderson (24m 22s)
So, uh, just all this morning, uh, so I was looking around Ryan Christoffel at nine to five Mac wrote a piece when ultra doesn't mean best anymore.

Tom Anderson (24m 31s)
Which I thought was an interesting write-up.

Tom Anderson (24m 34s)
I, you know, basically saying series 10 with, you know, the S 10 chip and the bigger, ever so slightly bigger screen and some of the display

Tom Anderson (24m 42s)
technology stuff, um, might be the new King and maybe, um, Think, and Jeff,

Tom Anderson (24m 49s)
I want to, I'm curious what you think with the ultra, the thing that I, that's like one of my top couple features on it is the flat screen, right?

Tom Anderson (25m 1s)
Series zero, two, four, and seven.

Tom Anderson (25m 5s)
The series seven was by far the most scratch proof of all the ones I had.

Tom Anderson (25m 10s)
Um, and the, just with the flat display, you don't get a lot of the reflections that you tend to get with the rounded, um, display on the, the series watches.

Tom Anderson (25m 22s)
Um, so I really love it.

Tom Anderson (25m 24s)
The battery is, is, is better, you know, aesthetics.

Tom Anderson (25m 28s)
That's a personal thing.

Tom Anderson (25m 29s)
Some people like it.

Tom Anderson (25m 31s)
Um, but yeah, so it's an interesting question.

Tom Anderson (25m 33s)
I think probably just if you look at, okay, what's newer.

Tom Anderson (25m 36s)
So yeah, it's probably a little bit better, but when ultra three comes out,

Tom Anderson (25m 39s)
I think it, it regains it.

Tom Anderson (25m 40s)
It just depends what you're looking for.

Tom Anderson (25m 42s)
Some people don't like the way the ultra looks.

Tom Anderson (25m 44s)
Some people have said the series 10 or prior models of that have

Tom Anderson (25m 49s)
looked kind of toyish to them.

Tom Anderson (25m 50s)
And they thought the ultra was like the first one that really looked like a watch.

Tom Anderson (25m 54s)
So that's all personal.

Jeff Battersby (25m 56s)
Yes, it is.

Jeff Battersby (25m 58s)
It really is.

Jeff Battersby (25m 59s)
Um, yeah, I, I like the, I like the ultra.

Jeff Battersby (26m 3s)
Uh, the only reason I got to watch was because it was the ultra.

Jeff Battersby (26m 6s)
Um, and, but the size thing is, is kind of important.

Jeff Battersby (26m 9s)
Um, we had Mark on, uh, in the last episode and Mark, you know, said, said his, uh, wrists are too small for an ultra and might be too small for, for the the series 10 and Riley Hill

Jeff Battersby (26m 26s)
also said the same thing that he is.

Jeff Battersby (26m 28s)
He's one who, you know, the smaller sizes suit him better.

Jeff Battersby (26m 32s)
So that's a consideration, you know, the size.

Jeff Battersby (26m 36s)
And I think the boxy nature of the Ultra for some people makes it look even bigger.

Jeff Battersby (26m 44s)
And that can be a thing, you know, the curved edges do,

Jeff Battersby (26m 48s)
you know, it's like a fancy sports car, right?

Jeff Battersby (26m 51s)
You know, and the edges are curved.

Jeff Battersby (26m 53s)
It looks cleaner, sleeker, and.

Jeff Battersby (26m 56s)
Always makes you look better, so you know it's a.

Tom Anderson (26m 59s)
Yeah, I'm curious so that the series 10 is 46 and 42 millimeter sizes.

Tom Anderson (27m 9s)
So we've progressed quite a bit because we think we started out at 38 and 42 way back on the very first ones.

Tom Anderson (27m 16s)
And so I'll be curious to see if when ultra three comes out, if maybe it creeps up a little bit, right?

Tom Anderson (27m 21s)
Maybe to like a 50 and maybe they do like an interim model in between.

Tom Anderson (27m 27s)
So they've got like a 48.

Tom Anderson (27m 29s)
And a 52 for, I don't know, power lifters.

Tom Anderson (27m 32s)
I don't know.

Tom Anderson (27m 33s)
Somebody's got an arm that big, but it ain't me.

Jeff Battersby (27m 33s)
Mm-hmm, yeah, put it around your leg

Joe Moyer (27m 33s)
yeah they're getting big yeah yeah me either right yeah no it's just my apple watch it's just it's just too big for my wrist now really it's okay you can come in right right yeah just checking the time on my ankle right

Tom Anderson (27m 38s)
So yeah, like house arrest.

Jeff Battersby (27m 51s)
And I can leave the house

Tom Anderson (27m 53s)
Getting side-eyed at the grocery store.

Tom Anderson (27m 59s)
Kids, stay away from that guy.

Jeff Battersby (28m 3s)
No, you cannot date my daughter

Joe Moyer (28m 4s)
haha

Tom Anderson (28m 5s)
Yeah, yeah, good stuff.

Tom Anderson (28m 7s)
All right, so on to the iPhone.

iPhone

Tom Anderson (28m 10s)
They started with the iPhone 16.

Tom Anderson (28m 14s)
So before we get into the iPhone,

Tom Anderson (28m 15s)
let's take a kind of an inventory check.

Tom Anderson (28m 17s)
Joe, which iPhone do you have currently?

Joe Moyer (28m 19s)
I have the iPhone 15 Pro.

Tom Anderson (28m 22s)
All right, Jeff.

Jeff Battersby (28m 23s)
15 pro max and Joe are you upgrading Tom we know because you've been talking about I'm not upgrading

Tom Anderson (28m 24s)
Okay, and I've got the 14 Pro.

Joe Moyer (28m 30s)
I'm not. Nope. I'm gonna. Yeah, we know one of us is.

Tom Anderson (28m 38s)
Yeah, so I did not intend to update.

Tom Anderson (28m 42s)
How many times have I said that?

Jeff Battersby (28m 43s)
Yeah, right, I didn't intend to get an Apple Vision Pro Oh, well... cough laughter Okay...

Joe Moyer (28m 45s)
Welcome to Apple

Tom Anderson (28m 46s)
Yeah.

Joe Moyer (28m 50s)
Hmm yep

Tom Anderson (28m 50s)
I have something to say about that a little bit later.

Tom Anderson (28m 53s)
Um, but, and honestly, the only reason that I am updating is the 14 pro does not work with the Apple intelligence stuff.

Jeff Battersby (29m 2s)
the AI, right?

Tom Anderson (29m 3s)
Um, and so for what I do at work, I want to know.

Jeff Battersby (29m 5s)
Neither is the straight 15.

Tom Anderson (29m 8s)
And, uh, for the show and stuff.

Tom Anderson (29m 10s)
And so that, that's why I decided to do it.

Tom Anderson (29m 12s)
I was doing every two years anyway.

Tom Anderson (29m 14s)
And I thought, well, the 14 pros, you know, still pretty good.

Tom Anderson (29m 17s)
And so I was going to stretch it to three, but with that being the case, I did.

Tom Anderson (29m 21s)
So I went with the iPhone pro 16, um, or 16 pro max, uh, 256.

Tom Anderson (29m 30s)
So just the, the base storage there, but I got the natural titanium and I picked up that bright blue case, ultramarine that they have, because that's the only

Joe Moyer (29m 38s)
Case looks nice, right, yeah.

Tom Anderson (29m 38s)
you're going to get color on a pro.

Tom Anderson (29m 39s)
So yeah, be here Friday the 20th.

Tom Anderson (29m 45s)
So yeah.

Jeff Battersby (29m 46s)
cool. So that's right around the corner. So yeah, so Apple

Jeff Battersby (29m 50s)
releases an iPhone 16 6.1 and 6.7 inch displays comes in pretty colors, which is, man, I'd like to see the Pro Max's do that. But or the pros, you know, the the upper level, but we have an ultra Berlin, she's ultra marine, teal, pink, white,

Jeff Battersby (30m 11s)
black. Yeah, I do theater. Yeah, that really and they look

Tom Anderson (30m 13s)
Yeah, nice colors.

Jeff Battersby (30m 16s)
so good. They really do look good. And I really wish I mean,

Jeff Battersby (30m 22s)
I like the titanium. But man, I wish Apple kind of got sweeter color wise on the on the on the pro models. But that being said,

Jeff Battersby (30m 31s)
those, those are pretty nice. They have camera control button.

Jeff Battersby (30m 38s)
So they you don't have to have a pro model to be able to get that camera control button.

Jeff Battersby (30m 44s)
They both have.

Jeff Battersby (30m 47s)
Am I right about that, or am I lying?

Tom Anderson (30m 49s)
"You've stumped the panel."

Jeff Battersby (30m 52s)
I've stumped the panel,

Jeff Battersby (30m 53s)
and the guy who put the notes in here,

Jeff Battersby (30m 56s)
which wasn't me, didn't, yeah, we do,

Tom Anderson (30m 57s)
I don't know that.

Joe Moyer (30m 59s)
I think it's an A18 because on my notes, yeah, yeah, yeah, I think we went from the A16 to the A18.

Jeff Battersby (30m 59s)
'cause we're doing craft again,

Jeff Battersby (31m 1s)
and I'm completely lost.

Jeff Battersby (31m 3s)
I shoot from the hip, boys.

Tom Anderson (31m 6s)
I think it is too.

Jeff Battersby (31m 7s)
It isn't, yeah, yeah, it's an A18, right.

Tom Anderson (31m 8s)
Yeah.

Tom Anderson (31m 9s)
Yeah.

Tom Anderson (31m 10s)
You guys keep talking, I'll look it up.

Jeff Battersby (31m 10s)
Yeah, Tom's gonna look it up.

Jeff Battersby (31m 11s)
So,

Jeff Battersby (31m 14s)
But yeah, so we--

Tom Anderson (31m 14s)
We did.

Tom Anderson (31m 16s)
Yes, the A80.

Jeff Battersby (31m 16s)
we-- yeah, two cameras, important to note,

Jeff Battersby (31m 22s)
which honestly is probably enough for almost everybody.

Jeff Battersby (31m 25s)
They're really good cameras.

Jeff Battersby (31m 26s)
In fact, and we'll post a link to this,

Jeff Battersby (31m 29s)
the guys at Halide, the guys at Lux,

Jeff Battersby (31m 31s)
who have the Kino app and have Halide,

Jeff Battersby (31m 34s)
which is now my camera of choice almost 90% of the time.

Jeff Battersby (31m 38s)
They had a really good conversation.

Jeff Battersby (31m 40s)
And Abe, we're talking to you about upgrades

Jeff Battersby (31m 46s)
getting from this.

Jeff Battersby (31m 48s)
And their opinion was, for them, the pro model is the killer.

Jeff Battersby (31m 55s)
But for the average person, the 16's got plenty of camera juice and a lot of stuff going on under the colors.

Jeff Battersby (32m 4s)
Under the colors, that was good.

Jeff Battersby (32m 5s)
That was an accident, but man, that was really good.

Joe Moyer (32m 6s)
Yeah, it worked.

Jeff Battersby (32m 8s)
Under the colors.

Jeff Battersby (32m 11s)
Under the covers is what I meant to say.

Jeff Battersby (32m 16s)
And so their point of view was that you get plenty enough camera now in that 16 and all the features other than like ProMotion and things of that nature that you need to be able to take really good photographs.

Jeff Battersby (32m 32s)
So it makes probably the most sense for the most people to be--

Joe Moyer (32m 39s)
So what did you guys think of the camera control button being in sort of the base non-pro model?

Jeff Battersby (32m 44s)
I really do I like that Apple you know a lot of times you had to pay extra to get stuff for example I'm on a 15 Pro Max right now because of better camera capabilities in the 15 Pro Max than the 15 Pro I would have gotten a 15 Pro and so and if I were in the market for this if the iPhone 16 didn't have the camera control.

Joe Moyer (32m 46s)
Yeah.

Jeff Battersby (33m 14s)
In all likelihood, I would have gotten a 16 pro.

Jeff Battersby (33m 18s)
That would have been the deal.

Jeff Battersby (33m 21s)
I love that Apple's not making it a huge leap to go from one device to another.

Jeff Battersby (33m 30s)
Sure, you've only got two cameras,

Jeff Battersby (33m 31s)
but that's plenty enough.

Jeff Battersby (33m 33s)
And they're giving you kind of all the cool features,

Jeff Battersby (33m 35s)
the things that they're adding to the upper end models.

Jeff Battersby (33m 39s)
So I like it, I think it's great.

Jeff Battersby (33m 44s)
So yeah, so that's the iPhone 16, it seems like a really great model.

Jeff Battersby (33m 49s)
Tom, did you figure out, I don't know, the chip?

Tom Anderson (33m 52s)
figure out what yeah it's 18 18 6.1 inch and 6.7 inch display which I think you said earlier um

Jeff Battersby (33m 54s)
Or did we already decide that we were

Tom Anderson (34m 4s)
no promotion like you said and no always on display which is a bummer to me I think it's 2024 it's what 800 bucks starting point for the for that I think that's kind of silly it should be on there so yeah

Jeff Battersby (34m 9s)
I don't know how often do you pay attention to that though, frankly.

Joe Moyer (34m 17s)
Yeah, I didn't realize it didn't have that.

Joe Moyer (34m 19s)
That seems like it should be there.

Tom Anderson (34m 22s)
the always-on display oh I look at it surprisingly a lot yeah and it's but it's just not that i intentionally go looking at it but it's like if I leave my desk I come back I put my sunglasses down or whatever and it's never like oh I haven't seen that picture of the kid and it walks remember we've got that background and all that and you see all that um and the widgets and stuff uh being there that kind of thing but yeah it's not a big deal breaker but it seems kind of cheap I mean

Jeff Battersby (34m 23s)
Do you?

Jeff Battersby (34m 24s)
Yeah.

Jeff Battersby (34m 25s)
I mean.

Jeff Battersby (34m 26s)
Do you?

Jeff Battersby (34m 47s)
Yeah, I you know, I write, I'm, let me say that I'm happier that it has the camera control button, willing to give up if I were going to get a 16, I'm willing to give up the, the always on display for the for having the camera control. So if that was the trade off money wise, you know, at the

Jeff Battersby (35m 11s)
development level, I'm fine with that. I think that's actually a

Tom Anderson (35m 17s)
Oh, I think it's just a dollar trade-off, I don't think it's any development trade-off.

Jeff Battersby (35m 22s)
Okay. Mr. Cynical. Yeah, right. Exactly. All right. It is right.

Tom Anderson (35m 29s)
Just saying.

Joe Moyer (35m 32s)
Got to keep it tight, you know, yeah - Yep.

Tom Anderson (35m 33s)
Some reason why they keep upping those services subscription fees.

Tom Anderson (35m 38s)
Yep.

Tom Anderson (35m 40s)
But no, I think overall though, it's a great phone.

Tom Anderson (35m 43s)
Despite, you know, it's not perfect, but nothing is.

Tom Anderson (35m 45s)
And I think it's nice.

Tom Anderson (35m 47s)
And especially if you want colors and you like don't want a case to get colors.

Tom Anderson (35m 52s)
Yeah.

Tom Anderson (35m 53s)
Yep.

Tom Anderson (35m 54s)
Okay.

Tom Anderson (35m 54s)
Next, on to the 16 Pro and Pro Max.

Jeff Battersby (35m 58s)
Yes, sirree.

Tom Anderson (35m 58s)
With the fancy A18 Pro chip.

Tom Anderson (36m 1s)
Couple more cores on there, high performance, that kind of thing.

Jeff Battersby (36m 7s)
Data transfer, high performance USB-C data transfer, which is huge, direct to disk.

Tom Anderson (36m 10s)
Yes. Right.

Jeff Battersby (36m 15s)
So you can plug that in and shoot direct to disk,

Jeff Battersby (36m 18s)
which is amazing, I think.

Tom Anderson (36m 19s)
Yeah, she goes back to your this

Tom Anderson (36m 22s)
They feel like they've earned the name pro for these ranks There's always a little bit of cloudiness around that like well, what's a pro really mean usually just means it's the more expensive one

Jeff Battersby (36m 31s)
And it has an extra camera.

Tom Anderson (36m 32s)
But I mean it does have you know, it's higher-end. Let's put it that way

Joe Moyer (36m 33s)
Yeah, and no colors.

Joe Moyer (36m 35s)
Yeah.

Tom Anderson (36m 37s)
The colors look like they're right out of North Korea

Tom Anderson (36m 44s)
We don't get much but we're happy to get what we get

Joe Moyer (36m 46s)
Nope.

Joe Moyer (36m 48s)
We're happy with what we have.

Tom Anderson (36m 49s)
That's right

Jeff Battersby (36m 49s)
Right.

Tom Anderson (36m 51s)
So

Jeff Battersby (36m 51s)
And the new color is the desert, which just looks like a shade off of rose gold to me.

Jeff Battersby (36m 58s)
That's all the difference.

Tom Anderson (37m)
Yeah, it does look better than those

Tom Anderson (37m 2s)
Renders that were out a couple weeks ago. That was they were calling it bronze and

Tom Anderson (37m 7s)
And it that that didn't really look too good, but I think this looks fine

Tom Anderson (37m 11s)
So but I mean for the colors what they are I think you know, they look great. I just wish they were a little more exciting

Tom Anderson (37m 17s)
Yeah

Joe Moyer (37m 18s)
need to throw one like crazy color not crazy just green or blue or anything really you know

Tom Anderson (37m 22s)
Right Next I used to have green ones. I had a green one. I think was 11. That was green and they had blue for a while

Jeff Battersby (37m 25s)
They did yeah the same I did

Joe Moyer (37m 25s)
yeah

Joe Moyer (37m 29s)
I had blue yeah for the I think was the 12 pro was was blue

Tom Anderson (37m 30s)
Yeah

Tom Anderson (37m 32s)
Yeah, and they did have purple for the 14 14 pros we might be we might be

Joe Moyer (37m 35s)
yeah so I get you know what we're being too hard on apple here guys

Jeff Battersby (37m 38s)
Is that what it is? I'm sorry.

Joe Moyer (37m 40s)
I think we owe them an apology somebody called him

Tom Anderson (37m 43s)
Okay

Jeff Battersby (37m 43s)
Sand, natural, black and white. I don't think I'm being that hard.

Joe Moyer (37m 48s)
No, no, I think you're right. I think you're right on.

Jeff Battersby (37m 51s)
Yeah, because that's what desert is, right? Sand.

Tom Anderson (37m 52s)
Yeah

Tom Anderson (37m 54s)
Right storage for those The pro starts we didn't know I don't know if we mentioned this

Tom Anderson (38m)
The pro starts at 128 gigabytes the pro max starts at 256 both top out at one terabyte

Tom Anderson (38m 8s)
If you have a need for that if you're shooting lots of footage and stuff's probably good for you there

Tom Anderson (38m 12s)
The 5x zoom has come down to the pro or before it was pro max on the 15 series

Tom Anderson (38m 18s)
So I think that's good I know some people actually talked a few on threads over the last day or so who decided to go pro this time instead of pro max because it the

Tom Anderson (38m 27s)
equality there between the cameras on the two models.

Tom Anderson (38m 30s)
And I like when Apple does that. I like if it's a pro, it's a pro. And I think I don't like when the Pro Max has a little bit more than the Pro to a point. I mean, I know when you look at the Mac lineup, that's different when you have the M series chips, right? You've got M3, M3 Pro, M3 Max,

Jeff Battersby (38m 39s)
That's the whole reason I got the Pro Max.

Tom Anderson (38m 49s)
M3 Ultra, I think is where it goes to. That's a little bit different, but 4K 120, Dolby Vision video and on the Pro Max the longest battery life

Tom Anderson (39m)
ever in an iPhone. I think it's up to 33 hours for yeah so that'll be good I think that was I think the 15 was a 27 and this one jumped so that's pretty good jump and I saw I saw a youtuber talking about it I don't I can't remember the specifics but I think they made some thermal improvements as well because he was commenting specifically on that saying that his 15 Pro would get get kind of hot when he was doing certain things so he's hoping...

Jeff Battersby (39m 4s)
streamin' stuff, yeah.

Jeff Battersby (39m 7s)
It is.

Jeff Battersby (39m 32s)
So anyway, yeah, nice, nice ones.

Jeff Battersby (39m 35s)
I would say if I were buying this year,

Jeff Battersby (39m 37s)
I would be getting the 16 Pro.

Jeff Battersby (39m 38s)
The only reason I got the Max last time was for the 5X camera.

Jeff Battersby (39m 42s)
So I would bounce back.

Jeff Battersby (39m 45s)
I like that smaller size.

Jeff Battersby (39m 47s)
I'm not overwhelmed by the larger size.

Jeff Battersby (39m 49s)
And these are both bigger than the previous models.

Tom Anderson (39m 51s)
Yes. Yes. 6.3 and 6.9. Yeah. What did you see?

Joe Moyer (39m 53s)
That seems to be a theme. Yeah, I would do the same Jeff I would I would go with the 16 pro

Tom Anderson (39m 59s)
Yeah.

Jeff Battersby (40m 1s)
What were you going to say, Tom?

Tom Anderson (40m 2s)
Now, I was just going to say that, uh, the, um, what was I going to say?

Jeff Battersby (40m 7s)
I don't know.

Joe Moyer (40m 8s)
Apologies.

Tom Anderson (40m 9s)
Yeah, I don't know. I'm almost half hearing loss.

Jeff Battersby (40m 10s)
Great, great.

Jeff Battersby (40m 11s)
You just walked into the bathroom and couldn't remember you had to pee?

Jeff Battersby (40m 14s)
Is that what the deal is?

Tom Anderson (40m 15s)
I'm not that bad off yet.

Joe Moyer (40m 18s)
It's coming.

Tom Anderson (40m 19s)
Yeah, but.

Tom Anderson (40m 22s)
No, so I I've had the pro.

Tom Anderson (40m 25s)
And I think I've gotten a little bit bored with it, and so I'm going to try the Pro Max. We'll see how it goes. The last biggest model that I had was the 7 plus.

Tom Anderson (40m 36s)
And so I thought, well, I can't be as big as that, 'cause that thing was huge. And so then I went and looked up the specs at MacTracker the other day and the 7 plus is about the size of the 14 pro.

Tom Anderson (40m 47s)
Oh, yeah, so it's going to be a little bigger, but my wife has the Pro Max.

Joe Moyer (40m 48s)

(laughs) Wow.

Tom Anderson (40m 51s)
14 maybe, and it'll be fine, but I just want to change things up a bit.

Jeff Battersby (40m 53s)
Mm-hmm

Jeff Battersby (40m 57s)
Yeah, I haven't find I found I will say the the Pro Max to be too large

Jeff Battersby (41m 3s)
It still is it still is fine

Jeff Battersby (41m 6s)
But I do like that the crisper tighter feel of the of the smaller one. So, you know, that would be that would be me

Jeff Battersby (41m 15s)
Little side note for all those interested Apple dropped the fine woven

Jeff Battersby (41m 21s)
cases and

Jeff Battersby (41m 23s)
Will confess here and again Riley

Jeff Battersby (41m 27s)
at sleep head on threads

Jeff Battersby (41m 30s)
He and I were having a little side conversation over there. I immediately went out and ordered another fine-woven. I

Joe Moyer (41m 37s)
I think I saw that.

Jeff Battersby (41m 38s)
Gotta I got a green one. That's might even be at my doorstep right this minute

Jeff Battersby (41m 45s)
For all the crap that that thing got I really do like it. It's perfect particularly like on vacation

Jeff Battersby (41m 53s)
This has been weird for me. I've gotten a lot of cases for the 15 pro max. It's weird. I got two from

Jeff Battersby (42m 2s)
From bulls rap like their stuff. I hate their name

Jeff Battersby (42m 7s)
But they're uh, they're levering Tom's

Tom Anderson (42m 12s)
Just going to let that go.

Jeff Battersby (42m 12s)
Yep, good good move. Good move. I like their leather cases. I also got a

Jeff Battersby (42m 19s)
for riding bikes a new quick lock case which

Jeff Battersby (42m 23s)
I love a ton. It locks it onto my bike so I can use the biking features. So, suddenly I'm no longer a watch band guy. I love watch bands but there aren't any to get. They did,

Tom Anderson (42m 35s)
Hey, they had new ones. Did you see those? Yeah, I don't need to drop another hundred dollars on that

Jeff Battersby (42m 37s)
yeah. You know, maybe I can get something now. Yeah, why not? But I do have several cases that I'm really, that I'm

Tom Anderson (42m 48s)
Joe, are you a case guy or you go without the case?

Joe Moyer (42m 51s)

Oh, I'm a case guy, even if I didn't have two kids.

Joe Moyer (42m 55s)
I was going through cases, I was buying the Apple,

Joe Moyer (42m 58s)
I think it's the Silicon case, and I was shredding them.

Joe Moyer (43m 1s)
So I was actually chatting with our mutual friend, Gannon,

Joe Moyer (43m 5s)
and he said he liked the Peak design.

Joe Moyer (43m 9s)
So I got one of those and it's great.

Joe Moyer (43m 10s)
I like the aesthetic of it, I like the design of it.

Joe Moyer (43m 14s)
The only problem is it has lots of accessories,

Joe Moyer (43m 16s)
which now I wanna go buy those.

Joe Moyer (43m 19s)
'cause I like the wallet and things like that.

Joe Moyer (43m 22s)
I love the way the phone looks and feels without the case,

Joe Moyer (43m 25s)
but I just don't want that kind of excitement in my life right now.

Jeff Battersby (43m 31s)
Like Riley, I'm caseless at home usually, and then I wrap it up, depending on what I'm doing, like if I'm going out for a hike or something.

Joe Moyer (43m 32s)
Tom, geez.

Joe Moyer (43m 34s)
Yeah.

Tom Anderson (43m 43s)
And it was interesting they dropped the fine woven, which I wonder on that if they, if that,

Tom Anderson (43m 47s)
because the results people were seeing with that seemed so varied. Like you didn't have any problems with it and Riley liked it. And then, but you see other people, um, and they're not,

Tom Anderson (44m)
there's some people that I follow that aren't really clickbait people. So I don't think they were doing it just for that, that really it just didn't hold up. It didn't do well. So I wonder if if they dropped it just because it turned out to be like hard to make in a way that

Tom Anderson (44m 13s)
or something. It just seems so very like some people had it and didn't have any issues with it at all. Some people had it three weeks and it looked like garbage. So it was, I don't know what the deal was with that, but they didn't put any replacement out, which I was a little bit

Jeff Battersby (44m 25s)
Yeah, I don't know either.

Tom Anderson (44m 29s)
disappointed with because I ended up going with silicone case and I don't really like those.

Tom Anderson (44m 34s)
They attract lint and they're hard to get in and out of your pocket, but I didn't want to go with a third party yet because I want to see how people.

Tom Anderson (44m 43s)
Adjust their cases for the camera control button and I don't really want to deal with a cutout because I think the cutout

Tom Anderson (44m 50s)
Especially like with leather case what I'm concerned about because the leather cases tend to be a little thicker like it seems like with the cutout You know, it's gonna have to be an interesting cutout to make that button It's still kind of easily accessible without the leather pieces getting in the way

Tom Anderson (45m 6s)
So I wanted to see how the third party shakes out So I just went with that for now and I don't know I may end up caseless for a while if it gets to be

Tom Anderson (45m 13s)
That's what Apple cares for

Joe Moyer (45m 15s)
That's true. I have that too, but still too much excitement right now for me.

Joe Moyer (45m 19s)
Someday. It's a goal, guys. It's a goal. Yeah, it does. Yeah. Yeah.

Jeff Battersby (45m 19s)
Yeah, well, with little kids, it makes a big difference, too.

Tom Anderson (45m 22s)
It does huge difference, yeah

Jeff Battersby (45m 25s)
Nobody's fighting for my phone anymore, so I don't think so.

Tom Anderson (45m 27s)
Yeah anything else From the event hardware wise they did announce the dates for the operating systems Which are coming out today as this show releases so Mac OS Sequoia iOS and iPad OS 18

New Operating Systems 9/16

Tom Anderson (45m 40s)
watch OS 11

Tom Anderson (45m 43s)
TVOS is it 18 now -

Tom Anderson (45m 46s)
Okay, and then vision OS 2 will be coming out as well. I have dusted off the vision OS

Tom Anderson (45m 54s)
Or not the vision OS division Pro

Jeff Battersby (45m 54s)
Yeah, explain.

Tom Anderson (45m 56s)
To install the that when it comes out on today and see what that's like

Jeff Battersby (46m)
Okay, good for you.

Tom Anderson (46m 3s)
Tried to watch some football in it NFL is back. So I was gonna watch that that was paying the ass. So I put it away

Tom Anderson (46m 13s)
It's so frustrating

Tom Anderson (46m 15s)
And just as funny enough just as I was looking at that I saw

Tom Anderson (46m 21s)
Reposted it on threads. I forget the name of the place. It's OSM OCM something like that. It's a theater chain

Jeff Battersby (46m 26s)
Oh, yeah.

Jeff Battersby (46m 27s)
Yeah.

Jeff Battersby (46m 27s)
Yeah.

Tom Anderson (46m 28s)
They've built these Theaters, they're not really I don't think they're IMAX theaters, but they're kind of the same thing It's a big wall of display

Tom Anderson (46m 35s)
But they're using them for sporting events and live events and so you go in you sit down and watch it but the videos are showing I was like see that's

Tom Anderson (46m 43s)
all we need like apple puts out these four minute videos every four to six weeks which are great

Tom Anderson (46m 50s)
but you know it's a lot of cut scenes and things like that and and while those are fun to watch I just would like to have a big somewhat immersive viewing experience for for live events

Tom Anderson (47m 3s)
that isn't an ipad ported peacock app you know what I mean um and just I don't know licensing

Tom Anderson (47m 13s)
and all of that i'm sure is complicating things on their side but

Jeff Battersby (47m 14s)
Well, and camera, I think you got to be able to shoot it differently than they're probably currently being shot.

Tom Anderson (47m 21s)
I think you do if you want the more immersive stuff like they show in their videos, but this theater is just projecting

Jeff Battersby (47m 28s)
Just giant and right and putting you at eight inches away from the screen.

Tom Anderson (47m 28s)
TV feet, right?

Tom Anderson (47m 33s)
Well, yeah, probably 18 feet but

Tom Anderson (47m 36s)
But but that's all I need to start with because I know there's a lot of technical things that go with

Tom Anderson (47m 41s)
You know put the camera on the goalpost for the whole game or on the 50-yard line and you know You see the whole stadium and everything. I don't need that. I mean, that'd be great, but I don't need it. I just need

Tom Anderson (47m 51s)
Better viewing experience than we have now

Tom Anderson (47m 54s)
So anyway

Joe Moyer (47m 55s)
I mean, the hardware is incredible.

Joe Moyer (47m 56s)
At the beginning of our conversation,

Joe Moyer (47m 59s)
I didn't mean to sound flippant,

Joe Moyer (48m)
but every event they release something,

Joe Moyer (48m 3s)
my jaw hits the ground because it's always incredible.

Joe Moyer (48m 7s)
And then I think it's sort of the story becomes,

Joe Moyer (48m 9s)
well, what do we do with it?

Joe Moyer (48m 10s)
Is it something we need to upgrade to or the Vision Pro?

Joe Moyer (48m 14s)
I saw one in the Apple store the other day,

Joe Moyer (48m 15s)
I was in to get a few things and it looks really cool,

Joe Moyer (48m 19s)
but everybody I know who has one,

Joe Moyer (48m 20s)
which isn't very many people,

Joe Moyer (48m 23s)
they're kind of struggling a little bit

Joe Moyer (48m 25s)
because they don't know what it's for.

Jeff Battersby (48m 27s)
You're looking at a guy that has one right there.

Joe Moyer (48m 27s)
So you're right, yeah, yeah.

Joe Moyer (48m 29s)
And it looks cool, but what is it for?

Joe Moyer (48m 34s)
And is it just the sizzle reels that they're gonna release every four to six months?

Joe Moyer (48m 39s)
I really hope they figure it out because it looks like a great piece of hardware.

Tom Anderson (48m 43s)
Yeah, and they just put out the they've got this elevate series

Tom Anderson (48m 47s)
That's immersive content. And so they they had a new one of those and I was talking to Mark Palmer about that the other day

Tom Anderson (48m 54s)
Beautifully shot and it's about six minutes long

Tom Anderson (48m 58s)
The narration on it feels a little bit like something you would watch in middle school or something. Like it's not

Jeff Battersby (49m 5s)
Yeah, that's who you need.

Joe Moyer (49m 6s)
Where's David Attenborough? Call him up.

Tom Anderson (49m 7s)
Is because it's not it's not deep content, which is fine doesn't have to be but at the same time

Tom Anderson (49m 13s)
It's like well, it's six minutes and then it's done then you put it away

Tom Anderson (49m 17s)
So and after a while, I mean once you see those, you know

Tom Anderson (49m 22s)
You kind of get used to the immersive aspect of it and it's like, okay, so what's the next step?

Tom Anderson (49m 28s)
And I don't think they've gotten to that yet. Now. They do have that series coming out this fall

Tom Anderson (49m 33s)
That's the I forget the name of it, but there's an immersive series. I think six or eight episodes or something So that could be interesting. We'll see how that goes. Yep

Tom Anderson (49m 43s)
You guys planning to update operating systems day one. I know Jeff. You've been bait is all summer. So it's nothing for you and but

Tom Anderson (49m 49s)
How about you Joe?

Joe Moyer (49m 51s)
Yeah, I will. I put the, I'm a brave man. So I put the beta on my iPhone on Friday before this releases. So, you know, really, really early in the beta over here. But yeah,

Joe Moyer (50m 1s)
I usually update pretty quickly. I mean, as I should mention, my iPad is basically runs on coal.

Joe Moyer (50m 7s)
I have like a third gen iPad Air. So I don't even know if I'm gonna be able to put it on.

Joe Moyer (50m 12s)
So talking about upgrades, I know that's not that wasn't announced, but that's got to happen because the problem is it just keeps chugging along.

Tom Anderson (50m 20s)
Right

Jeff Battersby (50m 20s)
Yeah, well that's the beauty of Apple stuff too, is it does last longer.

Joe Moyer (50m 21s)
But anyway, it is, yeah.

Tom Anderson (50m 24s)
Well, they've got some great iPads to choose from yeah, I will do it the only beta I've run so far is the Sequoia beta and that's for work just to kind of get in front of

Joe Moyer (50m 25s)
Yeah, Tom, what about you?

Tom Anderson (50m 34s)
Compatibility for with things there at the office. But yeah as soon as it it comes out on install all that stuff, which would be fun It's always a fun time to dig around and Jeff and I will send each other a hundred screenshots. Did you see this?

Jeff Battersby (50m 46s)
Yeah, thanks for kitchen up.

Tom Anderson (50m 47s)
And you'll be like, "Yeah, I saw that in July. Thanks, Don."

Tom Anderson (50m 51s)
Bear with me.

Joe Moyer (50m 51s)
Just humor him, right?

Joe Moyer (50m 52s)
Yeah, yeah.

Jeff Battersby (50m 56s)
Well Joe, thank you so much for taking the time to come visit with us and we will have you back if you'll come back.

Joe Moyer (51m 4s)
I'd love to come back.

Jeff Battersby (51m 4s)
Great.

Joe Moyer (51m 4s)
Yeah. Yeah.

Joe Moyer (51m 5s)
If you'll have me.

Jeff Battersby (51m 5s)
So we'll have you back to talk about the journaling guide and Apple TV+ content where Tom gets to go on vacation or do something.

Jeff Battersby (51m 14s)
But it's been great.

Jeff Battersby (51m 16s)
We really appreciate you coming on and you've been a great guest.

Joe Moyer (51m 18s)
Thank you. Yeah. Thanks. I really enjoyed it.

Jeff Battersby (51m 19s)
As a reminder, yeah, you bet, show music, Psychokinetics, Frontman Celsius 7.

Close

Jeff Battersby (51m 25s)
There should be, they're starting to be in the guest section.

Jeff Battersby (51m 32s)
You should be able to start looking these guys up and in fact, as of the moment this show posts, Joe's information will be in there.

Jeff Battersby (51m 40s)
Random Art and Design, if you look at our guest page, has his stuff in there and links to his website.

Jeff Battersby (51m 46s)
Highly recommend both checking out Psychokinetics on whatever platform you listen to music on or Celsius 7 on whatever platform you listen to music on and have Randall do some work for you.

Jeff Battersby (51m 58s)
He's a great guy.

Tom Anderson (52m)
Indeed. And Joe, what's your website again?

Joe Moyer (52m 3s)
So it's going to be 24letters.net.

Joe Moyer (52m 6s)
And if you could type in the digits, 24,

Joe Moyer (52m 9s)
you could type in the word 24 letters and you'll get there.

Jeff Battersby (52m 11s)
Look at you, you're really fancy.

Joe Moyer (52m 13s)
Yep, super fancy.

Tom Anderson (52m 14s)
Right, got it covered. Right, and you've got a newsletter too, right, that they could sign up for?

Joe Moyer (52m 15s)
Thanks.

Joe Moyer (52m 18s)
Yep, I do.

Joe Moyer (52m 19s)
I'm just sort of doing a soft launch.

Joe Moyer (52m 23s)
It's called the Journaling Guide.

Joe Moyer (52m 25s)
And it really trying to focus on some of the historical figures who have journaled and their impact on the world and offering some actionable advice about.

Joe Moyer (52m 33s)
people who wanna start journaling and sharing some of what I'm learning 'cause I'm kinda going down the rabbit hole and I'm gonna take y'all with me if you sign up.

Tom Anderson (52m 40s)
Yeah, yeah, do it. It's good. I've gotten a couple of those and, uh, good, good stuff. So,

Joe Moyer (52m 43s)
Thanks.

Joe Moyer (52m 45s)
Thank you.

Tom Anderson (52m 46s)
okay, well, Joe, again, thank you, sir, for coming on. We do appreciate it.

Joe Moyer (52m 50s)
My pleasure, thanks guys.

Tom Anderson (52m 50s)
And we are looking forward to having you back. Jeff, as always, good to see you. So we'll, uh,

Jeff Battersby (52m 55s)
It's good to see you too, Tom.

Tom Anderson (52m 56s)
