PODCASTER INTERVIEW
►Tell us about you and your podcast
The Anything But Credible Podcast was created by Nick Duggan and is co-hosted with Keith Schaefer & Tim Griffard, a.k.a. Duggs, Keith, & Griff.
Anything But Credible is about craziness. Crazy people thinking/doing crazy things that help create the crazy news stories & theories you don't hear about in this crazy world we live in.
Our listeners are anyone who enjoys hearing normal people conversate satirically about not so normal topics. We find that our listener base currently covers all sexes and an extremely wide age group.
►Why & how did you start this podcast?
Anything But Credible was created in August of 2016 as a means of showing all of the hilarious weird things happening every day that you've most likely never heard of. I would say the overall goal is to entertain and inform each person listening by allowing them to genuinely think & laugh at all of the craziness around us.
We wanted a place where news stories could bring positive emotions like a smile to someone's face, instead of the negative emotions like worry and dread that come with the mainstream news today. On top of that all three of us are huge podcast fans so it just made sense to get together and start creating in a podcast format.
The start of our podcast presented the normal problems/issues that come with beginning any new project, but luckily my background in audio helped guide us gear-wise so we were able to get the wheels rolling relatively quickly. For us, the real starting issues came from everything other than the audio content, such as the logo creation, branding, marketing, social media, etc.
►How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Finding the time to do everything we feel is needed to elevate our podcast is tough for us right now, being that all three of us currently have full time jobs, but the end goal is to make this podcast our only job. We work on that by spending as much time as possible networking, creating, and experimenting with new ideas in order to produce the best content possible.
Since day one we have been a weekly podcast, meaning one episode per week, although every now and again there may be an extra episode tossed into the mix. Our episodes usually run a little over an hour in length, but the time spent for both pre & post production each week can reach anywhere from 6-12 hours.
We currently fund everything ourselves out of pocket, but since the beginning of 2018 have opened up to sponsors/advertisers. We currently don't have any, but we are actively looking.
At almost 2 years in, our budget shows we have spent a little north of $2,000, gear included. We have set monthly charges from our website, anythingbutcredible.com, along with our SoundCloud subscription which hosts our RSS feed. We also pay monthly for our stats to be tracked through Blubrry. Other than that we spend a lot of resources trying out new ideas for the podcast, which covers a wide range of things.
►What do you gain from podcasting?
This is at the top of our list of things to work/grow on. We currently do not have any sponsorship or any sources of income, but we are actively working on changing that. We have tried using different methods to gain sponsorship, but nothing has worked out yet. We are under 1,000 downloads per month still, so I'm sure that plays a part, but if you know of anyone or any place looking to sponsor a great pod let us know!!!
As far as the non-financial side, this podcast has allowed us to collaborate and create with all types of people we otherwise would not have met, especially locally here in our hometown of St. Louis. We've also been able to meet and talk with people outside of STL who are doing awesome stuff that more people need to know about. Outside of the actual episode recording, this type of constant dialogue has helped our everyday conversations become more relaxed and natural.
►How does your podcasting process look like?
Our process is pretty simple. We have 3 main sections to each episode. The first is any hot topics we want to discuss or if there is a guest we will focus on them. Secondly, we focus on a conspiracy theory. The third section is what we call the Weekly Weirdness, which are absurd news stories from around the world. Sticking to somewhat of a set format like this allows us each do our own homework separately each week and then bring everything together when it's time to record.
We have a rotating set of guest friends that we will sub in whenever they are available. Other than that we try to find guests through the internet/emails/social media/Listen Notes, etc. For any guest outside of St. Louis we will call them and record the phone call through our audio interface.
The gear we currently use is a little outdated, but we set everything up with our budget in mind. We record everything using an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra interface with Shure SM58 & SM48 mics that runs into Pro Tools 9. Using this setup allows us to record multiple tracks simultaneously, which is a big plus when it comes to post production.
►How do you market your show?
We currently don't do much marketing. We post as much as possible to Instagram, Twitter, & Facebook. We have tried strategies like social media giveaways and contests in the past, but our following is not large enough to get any kind of serious return. We are now looking at the merchandise route, where we can give away or sell cheap merchandise either locally or through our website anythingbutcredible.com
►What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
I think the most important advice I would give to new podcasters is to keep going/recording/creating. Don't stop. Always create. You might blow up in the early stages and become a top podcast, but then again you might not. Your own friends and family might not even listen or support your pod, but still don't stop. This is a medium where you can run an entire show from the phone in your pocket, so it's just too easy to create to quit. There will be ups and downs just like everything else, but don't forget this is a growing medium that you want to be a part of. And if you start and hit that rough patch of possibly quitting, hit us up and let's collab!!! Good luck and keep on creating.
