00:00:03.520 --> 00:00:13.279
Well, hello, everybody, and welcome back to another episode of Solid Start, a podcast designed to get your week off to a solid start by focusing on life from God's perspective.
00:00:13.439 --> 00:00:21.039
I'm Greg Reed, life coach with Merrill Brose, a biosolids management company located in uh Kokomo, Indiana.
00:00:21.120 --> 00:00:29.359
It's our headquarters, and then uh joined by my ever amazing and young talented co-host Brian Herdzog.
00:00:29.679 --> 00:00:31.600
Woo, Brian, welcome.
00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:32.240
Thank you.
00:00:32.399 --> 00:00:32.960
Good morning.
00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:34.159
Good to have you back.
00:00:34.399 --> 00:00:35.439
I didn't go anywhere.
00:00:35.679 --> 00:00:37.359
Okay, but it's still good to have you back.
00:00:37.600 --> 00:00:38.799
Back on the podcast, I guess.
00:00:39.439 --> 00:00:39.759
Thank you.
00:00:39.840 --> 00:00:40.000
Thank you.
00:00:40.240 --> 00:00:42.479
So uh what's been going on for your weekend?
00:00:42.560 --> 00:00:48.079
Probably just eating bonbons, sitting by the beach and just hanging out for the weekend, right?
00:00:48.399 --> 00:00:48.960
I wish, yeah.
00:00:49.200 --> 00:00:51.840
No, we it's been quite the busy season.
00:00:52.240 --> 00:00:54.000
Yeah, this is soccer for you, right?
00:00:54.159 --> 00:00:55.840
So you've got uh a lot going on.
00:00:58.079 --> 00:01:00.960
Okay, two big trade shows coming up here in the next one.
00:01:01.200 --> 00:01:01.920
Okay, great.
00:01:02.079 --> 00:01:02.240
Okay.
00:01:02.479 --> 00:01:05.280
Yeah, with Wef Tech and then the Turf Grass show down in Florida.
00:01:05.359 --> 00:01:08.719
So we're and we just came out of a uh big show, didn't we?
00:01:08.799 --> 00:01:10.560
Didn't we have one in New Orleans or something?
00:01:10.640 --> 00:01:12.319
Uh that we were New Orleans is coming up.
00:01:12.400 --> 00:01:14.480
We've got just in uh Indy.
00:01:15.359 --> 00:01:16.079
In Indy, yes.
00:01:16.400 --> 00:01:16.640
Okay.
00:01:17.120 --> 00:01:17.439
Okay.
00:01:17.920 --> 00:01:18.719
Always something.
00:01:18.879 --> 00:01:19.200
Yeah.
00:01:19.439 --> 00:01:20.079
Which is great.
00:01:20.560 --> 00:01:21.760
Yeah, keep going.
00:01:22.640 --> 00:01:29.920
You keep uh getting the word out that uh we've got lots of product that uh people I think can use that can make the world a better place.
00:01:30.239 --> 00:01:31.359
A lot is changing for us.
00:01:31.519 --> 00:01:32.879
Uh changes for the better.
00:01:33.120 --> 00:01:33.359
Yes.
00:01:33.439 --> 00:01:34.959
Yeah, and it's it's exciting.
00:01:35.040 --> 00:01:38.239
It's been quite the ride already this year, and we're just getting started.
00:01:38.319 --> 00:01:46.000
So yeah, and you get to be a part of all that because you're the one that's uh your team is the one that makes it uh all get out so that people know what we're doing.
00:01:46.159 --> 00:01:52.640
We can do all kinds of amazing things in Kokomo, uh, but unless somebody finds out about it, then uh it's to no avail.
00:01:53.120 --> 00:01:53.680
Have a good team.
00:01:53.760 --> 00:01:53.840
Yeah.
00:01:54.239 --> 00:01:54.640
Proud of them.
00:01:54.959 --> 00:01:55.120
Yeah.
00:01:55.359 --> 00:02:06.000
Matter of fact, we uh we prayed for your team today in particular and for our uh IT team, but uh because without you guys, we can't uh we can't get the word out.
00:02:06.239 --> 00:02:09.840
So, yes, so we you were uh prayed for by name this morning.
00:02:10.240 --> 00:02:12.879
So uh glad to be able to do that.
00:02:13.199 --> 00:02:24.240
You know, one of the things that I brought uh in with me today was a first aid kit, and I had it up on a little table and I asked the people in the room, there were probably 70 people in the room.
00:02:24.400 --> 00:02:27.919
I said, would anybody know where to find this first aid kit?
00:02:28.080 --> 00:02:36.159
And I think there was not one person, there was one guy maybe that guessed, but nobody really knew where the first aid kits were.
00:02:36.319 --> 00:02:43.120
So I thought that was interesting, just the fact that you know we have those, and I'm thinking at home, I don't know.
00:02:43.280 --> 00:02:51.280
I know my wife has one, but I probably have to if I was bleeding, I would probably have to call her and say, where is it?
00:02:51.439 --> 00:02:54.159
Uh do you know where do you have one at home and know where it is?
00:02:54.479 --> 00:02:55.360
Uh a kit?
00:02:55.520 --> 00:02:58.800
No, but we have a closet that's got everything in it.
00:02:58.960 --> 00:02:59.120
Okay.
00:02:59.360 --> 00:03:02.159
So we would just run to the closet and tear it apart.
00:03:02.479 --> 00:03:07.039
Eventually, while you were bleeding to death, you would be able to uh find it.
00:03:07.199 --> 00:03:07.520
Yeah.
00:03:07.840 --> 00:03:16.560
And I think that uh, you know, that that idea of we use a first aid kit for cuts, for bleeding, for burns, emergencies.
00:03:16.800 --> 00:03:24.080
And it's interesting that Jesus um once told a story about a man whose hurt was impossible to miss.
00:03:24.560 --> 00:03:39.039
And so uh that story is a fascinating one because all three encountered the same wounded man, but what separates them is not whether they saw him, but it's what they did after they saw him.
00:03:39.280 --> 00:03:50.719
So I'll have you pick up that uh story in Luke chapter 10, starts with verse 25, and I'll interrupt you along the way just to talk about uh what's going on in the story.
00:03:50.960 --> 00:03:58.560
A Jewish man, that's important, a Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits.
00:03:58.719 --> 00:04:03.439
They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.
00:04:03.680 --> 00:04:11.919
By chance a priest came along, but when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by.
00:04:12.719 --> 00:04:22.319
You know, the first so we've got this first traveler that Jesus tells us about, and priests were descendants of Aaron, and they served in connection with the temple.
00:04:22.480 --> 00:04:33.519
So they offered sacrifices, they carried out sacred responsibilities, and to Jesus' audience, a priest represented kind of the respected religious insider.
00:04:33.680 --> 00:04:37.839
So if anyone in the story should stop, surely it's going to be this guy.
00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:40.000
Like, well, of course the priest would stop.
00:04:40.160 --> 00:04:41.759
He gets paid to do good.
00:04:42.079 --> 00:04:46.800
But in Jesus' story, the priest sees the wounded man, passes by on the other side.
00:04:47.040 --> 00:04:48.800
We're not really told why.
00:04:49.040 --> 00:04:55.920
Some have suggested it was maybe because of ceremonial uncleanness, but Jesus doesn't give us that motive.
00:04:56.079 --> 00:05:00.959
He just says that uh he saw him and he kept on walking.
00:05:01.600 --> 00:05:08.720
A temple assistant walked over and looked at the man lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.
00:05:09.759 --> 00:05:14.319
So next came the Levite, so another religious insider, if you will.
00:05:14.480 --> 00:05:27.120
And the tribe of Levi back in the Old Testament, they were set apart for religious service, and the Levites were like temple assistants, so they assisted in worship and temple life.
00:05:27.279 --> 00:05:36.800
Again, Jesus uh introduces someone whose identity suggests, well, this guy, he understands compassion, he understands service.
00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:39.199
Um Luke is explicit.
00:05:39.279 --> 00:05:48.240
The Levi came to the place, saw, he sees the man, he passes by, and neither the priest nor the Levite can say I didn't notice.
00:05:48.480 --> 00:05:56.720
So the problem wasn't that they couldn't see him, the problem was that seeing him didn't interrupt them.
00:05:57.199 --> 00:06:03.120
Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him.
00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:09.040
Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them.
00:06:09.279 --> 00:06:13.759
Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn where he took care of him.
00:06:14.079 --> 00:06:19.279
The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, Take care of this man.
00:06:19.439 --> 00:06:23.120
If his bill runs higher than this, I'll pay you the next time I'm here.
00:06:23.600 --> 00:06:28.240
Now, which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?
00:06:28.480 --> 00:06:29.360
Jesus asked.
00:06:29.600 --> 00:06:32.399
The man replied, The one who showed him mercy.
00:06:32.560 --> 00:06:36.560
Then Jesus said, Yes, now go and do the same.
00:06:37.199 --> 00:06:44.959
It's interesting that that story is instigated by this religious leader who is trying to question Jesus.
00:06:45.120 --> 00:06:46.000
Hey, who's my neighbor?
00:06:46.160 --> 00:06:48.160
In other words, how far does this have to go?
00:06:48.319 --> 00:06:50.879
How far do I need to care for people?
00:06:51.120 --> 00:06:54.319
And it's uh that phrase, but a Samaritan.
00:06:54.720 --> 00:06:58.800
Today we hear a good Samaritan and we automatically think, what?
00:06:59.199 --> 00:07:00.000
Like a hero.
00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:00.560
That's right.
00:07:00.879 --> 00:07:03.680
Somebody that's gonna, man, I'm looking for a good Samaritan.
00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:04.399
That's right.
00:07:04.639 --> 00:07:09.759
Um, but in it would not have landed that way to Jesus' original audience.
00:07:09.920 --> 00:07:17.360
Jews and Samaritans carried a very long history of religious, ethnic, and social hostility.
00:07:17.759 --> 00:07:22.160
Samaritans did it all wrong, and Jews felt like they did it all right.
00:07:22.319 --> 00:07:39.600
So when Jesus makes this outsider become the one who's the neighbor, it did not it did not land well for this uh for this Jewish person because, like of all the people that they would despise and put at the bottom of the list, he would have been one.
00:07:39.839 --> 00:07:47.839
But uh he's his own animal, brings him to an end, cares for him, pays for continued care, and a promise to return.
00:07:48.639 --> 00:07:52.399
And so here was kind of my the summary of that.
00:07:52.480 --> 00:08:01.360
Uh kind of you put all of that into one uh one phrase, it's all three men saw a problem, only one saw a person.
00:08:02.879 --> 00:08:07.120
So they all saw a problem, but only one saw a person.
00:08:07.519 --> 00:08:19.519
And so I just thinking about that uh uh first aid kid, I thought not every hurt bleeds, not every hurt that somebody has is their blood.
00:08:19.759 --> 00:08:22.240
Um this guy's hurt was obvious.
00:08:22.399 --> 00:08:28.000
The challenge wasn't seeing him, the challenge was what am I going to do about that?
00:08:28.240 --> 00:08:35.440
And so just the idea that um if you supervise people, sometimes busyness can be especially dangerous.
00:08:35.679 --> 00:08:42.159
If you just work belong alongside of someone, it's easy just to think, well, everything must be okay.
00:08:42.240 --> 00:08:45.279
There's no, you know, kind of no no blood, no harm, no foul.
00:08:45.679 --> 00:08:48.480
But inside, somebody can really be hurting.
00:08:48.799 --> 00:08:49.440
It's so true.
00:08:49.519 --> 00:08:53.120
And it's people that a lot of times you least expect to.
00:08:53.279 --> 00:08:53.600
Yeah.
00:08:53.759 --> 00:09:00.879
Um, but you never you'll never get that far unless you communicate with them and talk to them and get to know them.
00:09:01.039 --> 00:09:03.840
Like it it's all about uh the way of the shepherd, right?
00:09:03.919 --> 00:09:04.960
Getting to know your flock.
00:09:05.120 --> 00:09:05.279
Yeah.
00:09:05.440 --> 00:09:07.600
And uh I think that's where it starts.
00:09:07.840 --> 00:09:15.200
Reaching out, taking time to talk to those around you, especially your co-workers, and just asking, hey, how's your day going?
00:09:15.279 --> 00:09:18.240
And not just glossing over it.
00:09:18.399 --> 00:09:19.039
Listen to them.
00:09:19.200 --> 00:09:19.360
Right.
00:09:19.519 --> 00:09:21.120
If they're saying, Man, I'm struggling today.
00:09:21.200 --> 00:09:22.799
Don't be like, oh, I'm gonna pray for you.
00:09:22.879 --> 00:09:23.360
Yeah.
00:09:23.679 --> 00:09:26.399
You know, or like, oh man, that's that's yeah, have a good day.
00:09:26.639 --> 00:09:27.519
Have a good one.
00:09:27.919 --> 00:09:28.960
Stinks to be you.
00:09:29.519 --> 00:09:33.279
The reason they're telling you that is because they value that you ask them.
00:09:33.440 --> 00:09:33.679
Right.
00:09:33.840 --> 00:09:34.159
Right.
00:09:34.320 --> 00:09:35.840
So care for them after that.
00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:48.480
So we talked to you uh um, you weren't there, but you said exactly the same things that were my application for today, uh, kind of the take action was stop, ask, listen.
00:09:48.879 --> 00:09:54.080
So stop, put down the phone, pause, uh, maybe a task.
00:09:54.159 --> 00:10:01.519
Uh, when it's safe to do so, give that person your attention, and then ask, um, how are you really doing?
00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:03.440
Or sometimes when you say, How are you doing?
00:10:03.759 --> 00:10:05.039
Well, you know, I'm okay.
00:10:05.200 --> 00:10:06.639
Or uh, you know, I'm making it.
00:10:06.799 --> 00:10:08.559
That's why I hear people say that all the time.
00:10:08.879 --> 00:10:14.240
And if I know the person well enough, I'll say, hey, what would this take for you to be fabulous?
00:10:14.480 --> 00:10:19.120
And then sometimes that get, well, then this, then I begin to hear more of the story.
00:10:19.440 --> 00:10:24.480
So it's stop, then it's ask, and then exactly what you said to listen.
00:10:24.720 --> 00:10:30.720
Don't you know we don't have to rush to fix or to preach or compare stories or to get back to my agenda.
00:10:30.879 --> 00:10:37.039
It's listen long enough for the person uh so that they know you meant the question.
00:10:37.279 --> 00:10:46.639
Um so whether you're a manager, a director, or you don't have a title at all, maybe it's a co-worker, a family member, a friend, or a neighbor.
00:10:46.799 --> 00:10:49.200
Compassion doesn't require a title.
00:10:49.440 --> 00:10:55.759
It just demands that we stop, that we ask, and we listen.
00:10:56.320 --> 00:11:08.240
You know, a first aid kit is useful when somebody is physically hurt, but most of the hurts that you and I will encounter this week will never require any anything inside of a first aid kit.
00:11:08.399 --> 00:11:11.679
It's going to require something much harder to give.
00:11:11.919 --> 00:11:15.759
That's our time, our attention, and our compassion.
00:11:16.720 --> 00:11:24.720
So I think maybe what I want to say to those of you listening is that you can't shepherd people that you're too busy to notice.
00:11:25.039 --> 00:11:30.960
So this week, don't just think about managing your people or managing the people around you.
00:11:31.120 --> 00:11:37.600
Um, look for ways to shepherd them and to stop to ask and to listen.
00:11:44.799 --> 00:11:47.759
Well, Brian, why don't we go ahead and and pray today?
00:11:47.840 --> 00:12:06.000
And I know that there's a lot going on with the marketing team, and we we prayed for you guys in our safety meeting, but I'll have you to pray for uh the team uh here and around the country as you travel and as you have shows and all these exciting things are happening, but it's it's a lot of work.
00:12:06.399 --> 00:12:11.039
And then this is uh this is harvest season for uh farmers around the country.
00:12:11.120 --> 00:12:21.440
So I want to pray for for the farmers connected to our company uh as well as those that are uh farming around the country because this is this is when it all happens.
00:12:21.840 --> 00:12:22.399
Easy time.
00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:28.799
Yeah, you can plant and all that, but unless you get any, unless you get paid for it, uh all of that is for for naught.
00:12:28.879 --> 00:12:30.000
So I want to pray for them.
00:12:30.080 --> 00:12:35.200
And then just want to I saw a sign on my way in about uh truck driver appreciation week.
00:12:35.279 --> 00:12:38.240
That was last week, but we appreciate those who are driving.
00:12:38.320 --> 00:12:40.720
Maybe you're listening to this, you're in a truck right now.
00:12:40.879 --> 00:12:46.240
And so we're so thankful for all the drivers that are part of our company uh around the country.
00:12:46.320 --> 00:12:48.399
I mean, they're just everywhere around the country.
00:12:48.559 --> 00:12:55.679
So uh praying for safety, uh praying for opportunities for you to be able to have conversations with people.
00:12:55.840 --> 00:13:04.960
I know if you're in a truck, you're you're by yourself a lot, but we care about you and we want to do whatever you can to whatever we can to help you take a next step.
00:13:05.120 --> 00:13:16.720
So, Brian, if there's a if there was a driver or somebody that they would need to get a hold of us and they're saying, hey, I don't nobody's really stopped long enough to ask me and to listen, we want to do that.
00:13:16.799 --> 00:13:22.000
Uh it's not as personal as possible, but we'd least like to offer people an opportunity.
00:13:22.240 --> 00:13:32.480
Yeah, so you just go to the prayer tab with anyone on Merrillbros.com and then uh you can get in touch with us quickly there, or if you are really, you know, a part of this company, yeah.
00:13:32.639 --> 00:13:38.879
You can speak to any manager, supervisor, even our executive team, they are their doors are always open.
00:13:39.039 --> 00:13:40.879
Yeah, and their emails are there.
00:13:41.120 --> 00:13:44.639
Like just uh reach out and we'll definitely get in touch with you.
00:13:44.879 --> 00:13:46.879
It's it's what we're about here.
00:13:47.039 --> 00:13:47.120
Yeah.
00:13:47.279 --> 00:13:47.840
Our people.
00:13:48.240 --> 00:13:49.600
Yeah, we have a care team.
00:13:49.679 --> 00:13:53.200
We're not the only ones that care, but we have a care team that you and I are a part of.
00:13:53.440 --> 00:13:57.600
And we have a life coach down in Florida that's doing a great job, Kevin Murray.
00:13:57.759 --> 00:14:01.120
So there are lots of uh ways that people can connect with us.
00:14:01.440 --> 00:14:02.240
We care for our people.
00:14:02.639 --> 00:14:04.080
Yes, those people are you.
00:14:04.320 --> 00:14:04.720
That's right.
00:14:04.799 --> 00:14:05.120
That's right.
00:14:05.360 --> 00:14:06.080
So we care about you.
00:14:06.480 --> 00:14:07.039
You are it.
00:14:07.360 --> 00:14:14.799
Those of you that are listening, you're the ones that that we care about and want to do whatever we can uh to help you live your best life possible.
00:14:15.279 --> 00:14:16.879
So well, let's uh let's pray.
00:14:17.120 --> 00:14:19.679
All right, dear Helling Father, we thank you for this day.
00:14:19.759 --> 00:14:21.759
We thank you for how you provide.
00:14:22.080 --> 00:14:27.120
Thank you, God, for uh just your grace and your mercy and your love.
00:14:28.399 --> 00:14:35.200
Uh today, God, I want to pray for all those who will be traveling in the next couple weeks to all the shows that we have coming up.
00:14:35.600 --> 00:14:41.360
Pray for all the little things uh that you help uh just us prepare for this show.
00:14:41.519 --> 00:14:44.320
Uh, we thank you for the opportunity that we get to go to these shows.
00:14:44.399 --> 00:14:54.000
We're in a position where uh we are able to show our services and our products and the things that that you have blessed us with.
00:14:54.080 --> 00:14:56.559
And uh we thank you for that opportunity.
00:14:56.720 --> 00:15:06.159
But it it does take a lot of work and a lot of coordination and a lot of pieces, and so we're just praying for help with that and uh just safety as we travel to these shows.
00:15:06.799 --> 00:15:32.399
God, I uh I pray for each one of us that uh this week that uh we don't just see a problem, we just we see the people, the people around us, those who are working around us, those who might be at home, our kids, uh on our on our teams, whatever it is, God, that or whoever it is, I pray, God, that you would just put it on our hearts to just stop and just ask, How are you doing?
00:15:32.559 --> 00:15:35.759
And then most importantly, God, pray that we would just listen.
00:15:35.840 --> 00:15:40.240
Uh we tend to just get busy sometimes, like, yep, yep, yep, and move on.
00:15:40.320 --> 00:15:47.600
But God, they are reaching out to us, and I pray that we can be like that Samaritan and stop and care for the needs of others.
00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:55.039
Uh because there are a lot of people hurting, and it's not always like Greg said, that we're not bleeding, but there is hurt on the inside.
00:15:55.360 --> 00:16:07.679
And that hurt on the inside can be devastating to people, and you called us to serve and to love, and uh what better way, God, and than to just listen and uh pray with those who are are hurting.
00:16:08.159 --> 00:16:12.000
We just thank you, God, again, for this podcast and this opportunity to to do this.
00:16:12.240 --> 00:16:17.919
We thank you for Merrill Brothers allowing us to do this, and uh just pray, God, that you continue to bless this company.
00:16:18.000 --> 00:16:20.799
I pray that we would always put you first in all that we do.
00:16:22.320 --> 00:16:35.279
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we pause today to recognize that you're God and that you alone sit on the throne, and so we can cast all of our cares on you because you care about us.
00:16:35.519 --> 00:16:49.919
And that's uh the first place where we can do casting as we understand that uh you care deeply about every issue of our lives, and you're our refuge and strength, our very present help in our time of trouble.
00:16:50.159 --> 00:17:08.400
So we're just so grateful for this season of the year and for uh the fact that uh you allow crops to grow and the ground to fertilize and rain to come, and we're uh excited about the harvest that's uh ahead, and so pray for uh an abundant harvest again this year.
00:17:08.559 --> 00:17:30.240
Pray for all those that are involved in farming operations and that we'll be spending a lot of days and nights uh getting in all of uh their beans and their corn and all the products that they have and crops that they have planted in order to be able to meet the needs of their family and to be able to have an abundance to be able to use for kingdom purposes.
00:17:30.400 --> 00:17:32.400
So thank you for this harvest.
00:17:32.480 --> 00:17:56.960
And um as we think about uh farmers, we think about the drivers that are part of this company uh in particular all over the all over the country who are uh taking products, who are picking up uh sludge, who are delivering uh things uh that are so valuable uh that we need your direction, we need your safety, we need your protection.
00:17:57.119 --> 00:18:05.680
And so we're just thankful for uh the skilled drivers that you've given to us uh that are uh making this company happen in so many ways.
00:18:05.839 --> 00:18:09.119
Without them, we really would cease to exist.
00:18:09.440 --> 00:18:12.960
And so we're just so grateful for them and pray you'll bless them and their families.
00:18:13.119 --> 00:18:15.119
A lot of times they're they're gone a lot.
00:18:15.279 --> 00:18:27.200
They spend a lot of hours, and so we just pray that the times at their home will be wonderful times, that there'll be times of refreshment and times of encouragement and times of building up one another.
00:18:27.440 --> 00:18:34.160
So we uh we're just so grateful for the opportunity to um spend time with you and with one another today.
00:18:34.319 --> 00:18:35.920
It's in Jesus' name we pray.
00:18:36.160 --> 00:18:36.640
Amen.
00:18:36.880 --> 00:18:37.440
Amen.
00:18:37.680 --> 00:18:40.880
So thanks for joining us for another episode of Solid Start.
00:18:40.960 --> 00:18:44.079
Keep growing, keep encouraging, keep making a difference.
00:18:44.319 --> 00:18:55.920
And this week in particular, allow people to interrupt you in order that you can walk alongside of them and care for them, even though not every hurt bleeds.
00:18:56.319 --> 00:18:58.319
We can still do something to make a difference.
00:18:58.480 --> 00:18:59.759
So take care, my friends.
00:19:00.160 --> 00:19:00.640
Bye.
00:00:03.520 --> 00:00:13.279
Well, hello, everybody, and welcome back to another episode of Solid Start, a podcast designed to get your week off to a solid start by focusing on life from God's perspective.
00:00:13.439 --> 00:00:21.039
I'm Greg Reed, life coach with Merrill Brose, a biosolids management company located in uh Kokomo, Indiana.
00:00:21.120 --> 00:00:29.359
It's our headquarters, and then uh joined by my ever amazing and young talented co-host Brian Herdzog.
00:00:29.679 --> 00:00:31.600
Woo, Brian, welcome.
00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:32.240
Thank you.
00:00:32.399 --> 00:00:32.960
Good morning.
00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:34.159
Good to have you back.
00:00:34.399 --> 00:00:35.439
I didn't go anywhere.
00:00:35.679 --> 00:00:37.359
Okay, but it's still good to have you back.
00:00:37.600 --> 00:00:38.799
Back on the podcast, I guess.
00:00:39.439 --> 00:00:39.759
Thank you.
00:00:39.840 --> 00:00:40.000
Thank you.
00:00:40.240 --> 00:00:42.479
So uh what's been going on for your weekend?
00:00:42.560 --> 00:00:48.079
Probably just eating bonbons, sitting by the beach and just hanging out for the weekend, right?
00:00:48.399 --> 00:00:48.960
I wish, yeah.
00:00:49.200 --> 00:00:51.840
No, we it's been quite the busy season.
00:00:52.240 --> 00:00:54.000
Yeah, this is soccer for you, right?
00:00:54.159 --> 00:00:55.840
So you've got uh a lot going on.
00:00:58.079 --> 00:01:00.960
Okay, two big trade shows coming up here in the next one.
00:01:01.200 --> 00:01:01.920
Okay, great.
00:01:02.079 --> 00:01:02.240
Okay.
00:01:02.479 --> 00:01:05.280
Yeah, with Wef Tech and then the Turf Grass show down in Florida.
00:01:05.359 --> 00:01:08.719
So we're and we just came out of a uh big show, didn't we?
00:01:08.799 --> 00:01:10.560
Didn't we have one in New Orleans or something?
00:01:10.640 --> 00:01:12.319
Uh that we were New Orleans is coming up.
00:01:12.400 --> 00:01:14.480
We've got just in uh Indy.
00:01:15.359 --> 00:01:16.079
In Indy, yes.
00:01:16.400 --> 00:01:16.640
Okay.
00:01:17.120 --> 00:01:17.439
Okay.
00:01:17.920 --> 00:01:18.719
Always something.
00:01:18.879 --> 00:01:19.200
Yeah.
00:01:19.439 --> 00:01:20.079
Which is great.
00:01:20.560 --> 00:01:21.760
Yeah, keep going.
00:01:22.640 --> 00:01:29.920
You keep uh getting the word out that uh we've got lots of product that uh people I think can use that can make the world a better place.
00:01:30.239 --> 00:01:31.359
A lot is changing for us.
00:01:31.519 --> 00:01:32.879
Uh changes for the better.
00:01:33.120 --> 00:01:33.359
Yes.
00:01:33.439 --> 00:01:34.959
Yeah, and it's it's exciting.
00:01:35.040 --> 00:01:38.239
It's been quite the ride already this year, and we're just getting started.
00:01:38.319 --> 00:01:46.000
So yeah, and you get to be a part of all that because you're the one that's uh your team is the one that makes it uh all get out so that people know what we're doing.
00:01:46.159 --> 00:01:52.640
We can do all kinds of amazing things in Kokomo, uh, but unless somebody finds out about it, then uh it's to no avail.
00:01:53.120 --> 00:01:53.680
Have a good team.
00:01:53.760 --> 00:01:53.840
Yeah.
00:01:54.239 --> 00:01:54.640
Proud of them.
00:01:54.959 --> 00:01:55.120
Yeah.
00:01:55.359 --> 00:02:06.000
Matter of fact, we uh we prayed for your team today in particular and for our uh IT team, but uh because without you guys, we can't uh we can't get the word out.
00:02:06.239 --> 00:02:09.840
So, yes, so we you were uh prayed for by name this morning.
00:02:10.240 --> 00:02:12.879
So uh glad to be able to do that.
00:02:13.199 --> 00:02:24.240
You know, one of the things that I brought uh in with me today was a first aid kit, and I had it up on a little table and I asked the people in the room, there were probably 70 people in the room.
00:02:24.400 --> 00:02:27.919
I said, would anybody know where to find this first aid kit?
00:02:28.080 --> 00:02:36.159
And I think there was not one person, there was one guy maybe that guessed, but nobody really knew where the first aid kits were.
00:02:36.319 --> 00:02:43.120
So I thought that was interesting, just the fact that you know we have those, and I'm thinking at home, I don't know.
00:02:43.280 --> 00:02:51.280
I know my wife has one, but I probably have to if I was bleeding, I would probably have to call her and say, where is it?
00:02:51.439 --> 00:02:54.159
Uh do you know where do you have one at home and know where it is?
00:02:54.479 --> 00:02:55.360
Uh a kit?
00:02:55.520 --> 00:02:58.800
No, but we have a closet that's got everything in it.
00:02:58.960 --> 00:02:59.120
Okay.
00:02:59.360 --> 00:03:02.159
So we would just run to the closet and tear it apart.
00:03:02.479 --> 00:03:07.039
Eventually, while you were bleeding to death, you would be able to uh find it.
00:03:07.199 --> 00:03:07.520
Yeah.
00:03:07.840 --> 00:03:16.560
And I think that uh, you know, that that idea of we use a first aid kit for cuts, for bleeding, for burns, emergencies.
00:03:16.800 --> 00:03:24.080
And it's interesting that Jesus um once told a story about a man whose hurt was impossible to miss.
00:03:24.560 --> 00:03:39.039
And so uh that story is a fascinating one because all three encountered the same wounded man, but what separates them is not whether they saw him, but it's what they did after they saw him.
00:03:39.280 --> 00:03:50.719
So I'll have you pick up that uh story in Luke chapter 10, starts with verse 25, and I'll interrupt you along the way just to talk about uh what's going on in the story.
00:03:50.960 --> 00:03:58.560
A Jewish man, that's important, a Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits.
00:03:58.719 --> 00:04:03.439
They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.
00:04:03.680 --> 00:04:11.919
By chance a priest came along, but when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by.
00:04:12.719 --> 00:04:22.319
You know, the first so we've got this first traveler that Jesus tells us about, and priests were descendants of Aaron, and they served in connection with the temple.
00:04:22.480 --> 00:04:33.519
So they offered sacrifices, they carried out sacred responsibilities, and to Jesus' audience, a priest represented kind of the respected religious insider.
00:04:33.680 --> 00:04:37.839
So if anyone in the story should stop, surely it's going to be this guy.
00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:40.000
Like, well, of course the priest would stop.
00:04:40.160 --> 00:04:41.759
He gets paid to do good.
00:04:42.079 --> 00:04:46.800
But in Jesus' story, the priest sees the wounded man, passes by on the other side.
00:04:47.040 --> 00:04:48.800
We're not really told why.
00:04:49.040 --> 00:04:55.920
Some have suggested it was maybe because of ceremonial uncleanness, but Jesus doesn't give us that motive.
00:04:56.079 --> 00:05:00.959
He just says that uh he saw him and he kept on walking.
00:05:01.600 --> 00:05:08.720
A temple assistant walked over and looked at the man lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.
00:05:09.759 --> 00:05:14.319
So next came the Levite, so another religious insider, if you will.
00:05:14.480 --> 00:05:27.120
And the tribe of Levi back in the Old Testament, they were set apart for religious service, and the Levites were like temple assistants, so they assisted in worship and temple life.
00:05:27.279 --> 00:05:36.800
Again, Jesus uh introduces someone whose identity suggests, well, this guy, he understands compassion, he understands service.
00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:39.199
Um Luke is explicit.
00:05:39.279 --> 00:05:48.240
The Levi came to the place, saw, he sees the man, he passes by, and neither the priest nor the Levite can say I didn't notice.
00:05:48.480 --> 00:05:56.720
So the problem wasn't that they couldn't see him, the problem was that seeing him didn't interrupt them.
00:05:57.199 --> 00:06:03.120
Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him.
00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:09.040
Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them.
00:06:09.279 --> 00:06:13.759
Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn where he took care of him.
00:06:14.079 --> 00:06:19.279
The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, Take care of this man.
00:06:19.439 --> 00:06:23.120
If his bill runs higher than this, I'll pay you the next time I'm here.
00:06:23.600 --> 00:06:28.240
Now, which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?
00:06:28.480 --> 00:06:29.360
Jesus asked.
00:06:29.600 --> 00:06:32.399
The man replied, The one who showed him mercy.
00:06:32.560 --> 00:06:36.560
Then Jesus said, Yes, now go and do the same.
00:06:37.199 --> 00:06:44.959
It's interesting that that story is instigated by this religious leader who is trying to question Jesus.
00:06:45.120 --> 00:06:46.000
Hey, who's my neighbor?
00:06:46.160 --> 00:06:48.160
In other words, how far does this have to go?
00:06:48.319 --> 00:06:50.879
How far do I need to care for people?
00:06:51.120 --> 00:06:54.319
And it's uh that phrase, but a Samaritan.
00:06:54.720 --> 00:06:58.800
Today we hear a good Samaritan and we automatically think, what?
00:06:59.199 --> 00:07:00.000
Like a hero.
00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:00.560
That's right.
00:07:00.879 --> 00:07:03.680
Somebody that's gonna, man, I'm looking for a good Samaritan.
00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:04.399
That's right.
00:07:04.639 --> 00:07:09.759
Um, but in it would not have landed that way to Jesus' original audience.
00:07:09.920 --> 00:07:17.360
Jews and Samaritans carried a very long history of religious, ethnic, and social hostility.
00:07:17.759 --> 00:07:22.160
Samaritans did it all wrong, and Jews felt like they did it all right.
00:07:22.319 --> 00:07:39.600
So when Jesus makes this outsider become the one who's the neighbor, it did not it did not land well for this uh for this Jewish person because, like of all the people that they would despise and put at the bottom of the list, he would have been one.
00:07:39.839 --> 00:07:47.839
But uh he's his own animal, brings him to an end, cares for him, pays for continued care, and a promise to return.
00:07:48.639 --> 00:07:52.399
And so here was kind of my the summary of that.
00:07:52.480 --> 00:08:01.360
Uh kind of you put all of that into one uh one phrase, it's all three men saw a problem, only one saw a person.
00:08:02.879 --> 00:08:07.120
So they all saw a problem, but only one saw a person.
00:08:07.519 --> 00:08:19.519
And so I just thinking about that uh uh first aid kid, I thought not every hurt bleeds, not every hurt that somebody has is their blood.
00:08:19.759 --> 00:08:22.240
Um this guy's hurt was obvious.
00:08:22.399 --> 00:08:28.000
The challenge wasn't seeing him, the challenge was what am I going to do about that?
00:08:28.240 --> 00:08:35.440
And so just the idea that um if you supervise people, sometimes busyness can be especially dangerous.
00:08:35.679 --> 00:08:42.159
If you just work belong alongside of someone, it's easy just to think, well, everything must be okay.
00:08:42.240 --> 00:08:45.279
There's no, you know, kind of no no blood, no harm, no foul.
00:08:45.679 --> 00:08:48.480
But inside, somebody can really be hurting.
00:08:48.799 --> 00:08:49.440
It's so true.
00:08:49.519 --> 00:08:53.120
And it's people that a lot of times you least expect to.
00:08:53.279 --> 00:08:53.600
Yeah.
00:08:53.759 --> 00:09:00.879
Um, but you never you'll never get that far unless you communicate with them and talk to them and get to know them.
00:09:01.039 --> 00:09:03.840
Like it it's all about uh the way of the shepherd, right?
00:09:03.919 --> 00:09:04.960
Getting to know your flock.
00:09:05.120 --> 00:09:05.279
Yeah.
00:09:05.440 --> 00:09:07.600
And uh I think that's where it starts.
00:09:07.840 --> 00:09:15.200
Reaching out, taking time to talk to those around you, especially your co-workers, and just asking, hey, how's your day going?
00:09:15.279 --> 00:09:18.240
And not just glossing over it.
00:09:18.399 --> 00:09:19.039
Listen to them.
00:09:19.200 --> 00:09:19.360
Right.
00:09:19.519 --> 00:09:21.120
If they're saying, Man, I'm struggling today.
00:09:21.200 --> 00:09:22.799
Don't be like, oh, I'm gonna pray for you.
00:09:22.879 --> 00:09:23.360
Yeah.
00:09:23.679 --> 00:09:26.399
You know, or like, oh man, that's that's yeah, have a good day.
00:09:26.639 --> 00:09:27.519
Have a good one.
00:09:27.919 --> 00:09:28.960
Stinks to be you.
00:09:29.519 --> 00:09:33.279
The reason they're telling you that is because they value that you ask them.
00:09:33.440 --> 00:09:33.679
Right.
00:09:33.840 --> 00:09:34.159
Right.
00:09:34.320 --> 00:09:35.840
So care for them after that.
00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:48.480
So we talked to you uh um, you weren't there, but you said exactly the same things that were my application for today, uh, kind of the take action was stop, ask, listen.
00:09:48.879 --> 00:09:54.080
So stop, put down the phone, pause, uh, maybe a task.
00:09:54.159 --> 00:10:01.519
Uh, when it's safe to do so, give that person your attention, and then ask, um, how are you really doing?
00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:03.440
Or sometimes when you say, How are you doing?
00:10:03.759 --> 00:10:05.039
Well, you know, I'm okay.
00:10:05.200 --> 00:10:06.639
Or uh, you know, I'm making it.
00:10:06.799 --> 00:10:08.559
That's why I hear people say that all the time.
00:10:08.879 --> 00:10:14.240
And if I know the person well enough, I'll say, hey, what would this take for you to be fabulous?
00:10:14.480 --> 00:10:19.120
And then sometimes that get, well, then this, then I begin to hear more of the story.
00:10:19.440 --> 00:10:24.480
So it's stop, then it's ask, and then exactly what you said to listen.
00:10:24.720 --> 00:10:30.720
Don't you know we don't have to rush to fix or to preach or compare stories or to get back to my agenda.
00:10:30.879 --> 00:10:37.039
It's listen long enough for the person uh so that they know you meant the question.
00:10:37.279 --> 00:10:46.639
Um so whether you're a manager, a director, or you don't have a title at all, maybe it's a co-worker, a family member, a friend, or a neighbor.
00:10:46.799 --> 00:10:49.200
Compassion doesn't require a title.
00:10:49.440 --> 00:10:55.759
It just demands that we stop, that we ask, and we listen.
00:10:56.320 --> 00:11:08.240
You know, a first aid kit is useful when somebody is physically hurt, but most of the hurts that you and I will encounter this week will never require any anything inside of a first aid kit.
00:11:08.399 --> 00:11:11.679
It's going to require something much harder to give.
00:11:11.919 --> 00:11:15.759
That's our time, our attention, and our compassion.
00:11:16.720 --> 00:11:24.720
So I think maybe what I want to say to those of you listening is that you can't shepherd people that you're too busy to notice.
00:11:25.039 --> 00:11:30.960
So this week, don't just think about managing your people or managing the people around you.
00:11:31.120 --> 00:11:37.600
Um, look for ways to shepherd them and to stop to ask and to listen.
00:11:44.799 --> 00:11:47.759
Well, Brian, why don't we go ahead and and pray today?
00:11:47.840 --> 00:12:06.000
And I know that there's a lot going on with the marketing team, and we we prayed for you guys in our safety meeting, but I'll have you to pray for uh the team uh here and around the country as you travel and as you have shows and all these exciting things are happening, but it's it's a lot of work.
00:12:06.399 --> 00:12:11.039
And then this is uh this is harvest season for uh farmers around the country.
00:12:11.120 --> 00:12:21.440
So I want to pray for for the farmers connected to our company uh as well as those that are uh farming around the country because this is this is when it all happens.
00:12:21.840 --> 00:12:22.399
Easy time.
00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:28.799
Yeah, you can plant and all that, but unless you get any, unless you get paid for it, uh all of that is for for naught.
00:12:28.879 --> 00:12:30.000
So I want to pray for them.
00:12:30.080 --> 00:12:35.200
And then just want to I saw a sign on my way in about uh truck driver appreciation week.
00:12:35.279 --> 00:12:38.240
That was last week, but we appreciate those who are driving.
00:12:38.320 --> 00:12:40.720
Maybe you're listening to this, you're in a truck right now.
00:12:40.879 --> 00:12:46.240
And so we're so thankful for all the drivers that are part of our company uh around the country.
00:12:46.320 --> 00:12:48.399
I mean, they're just everywhere around the country.
00:12:48.559 --> 00:12:55.679
So uh praying for safety, uh praying for opportunities for you to be able to have conversations with people.
00:12:55.840 --> 00:13:04.960
I know if you're in a truck, you're you're by yourself a lot, but we care about you and we want to do whatever you can to whatever we can to help you take a next step.
00:13:05.120 --> 00:13:16.720
So, Brian, if there's a if there was a driver or somebody that they would need to get a hold of us and they're saying, hey, I don't nobody's really stopped long enough to ask me and to listen, we want to do that.
00:13:16.799 --> 00:13:22.000
Uh it's not as personal as possible, but we'd least like to offer people an opportunity.
00:13:22.240 --> 00:13:32.480
Yeah, so you just go to the prayer tab with anyone on Merrillbros.com and then uh you can get in touch with us quickly there, or if you are really, you know, a part of this company, yeah.
00:13:32.639 --> 00:13:38.879
You can speak to any manager, supervisor, even our executive team, they are their doors are always open.
00:13:39.039 --> 00:13:40.879
Yeah, and their emails are there.
00:13:41.120 --> 00:13:44.639
Like just uh reach out and we'll definitely get in touch with you.
00:13:44.879 --> 00:13:46.879
It's it's what we're about here.
00:13:47.039 --> 00:13:47.120
Yeah.
00:13:47.279 --> 00:13:47.840
Our people.
00:13:48.240 --> 00:13:49.600
Yeah, we have a care team.
00:13:49.679 --> 00:13:53.200
We're not the only ones that care, but we have a care team that you and I are a part of.
00:13:53.440 --> 00:13:57.600
And we have a life coach down in Florida that's doing a great job, Kevin Murray.
00:13:57.759 --> 00:14:01.120
So there are lots of uh ways that people can connect with us.
00:14:01.440 --> 00:14:02.240
We care for our people.
00:14:02.639 --> 00:14:04.080
Yes, those people are you.
00:14:04.320 --> 00:14:04.720
That's right.
00:14:04.799 --> 00:14:05.120
That's right.
00:14:05.360 --> 00:14:06.080
So we care about you.
00:14:06.480 --> 00:14:07.039
You are it.
00:14:07.360 --> 00:14:14.799
Those of you that are listening, you're the ones that that we care about and want to do whatever we can uh to help you live your best life possible.
00:14:15.279 --> 00:14:16.879
So well, let's uh let's pray.
00:14:17.120 --> 00:14:19.679
All right, dear Helling Father, we thank you for this day.
00:14:19.759 --> 00:14:21.759
We thank you for how you provide.
00:14:22.080 --> 00:14:27.120
Thank you, God, for uh just your grace and your mercy and your love.
00:14:28.399 --> 00:14:35.200
Uh today, God, I want to pray for all those who will be traveling in the next couple weeks to all the shows that we have coming up.
00:14:35.600 --> 00:14:41.360
Pray for all the little things uh that you help uh just us prepare for this show.
00:14:41.519 --> 00:14:44.320
Uh, we thank you for the opportunity that we get to go to these shows.
00:14:44.399 --> 00:14:54.000
We're in a position where uh we are able to show our services and our products and the things that that you have blessed us with.
00:14:54.080 --> 00:14:56.559
And uh we thank you for that opportunity.
00:14:56.720 --> 00:15:06.159
But it it does take a lot of work and a lot of coordination and a lot of pieces, and so we're just praying for help with that and uh just safety as we travel to these shows.
00:15:06.799 --> 00:15:32.399
00:15:32.559 --> 00:15:35.759
And then most importantly, God, pray that we would just listen.
00:15:35.840 --> 00:15:40.240
Uh we tend to just get busy sometimes, like, yep, yep, yep, and move on.
00:15:40.320 --> 00:15:47.600
But God, they are reaching out to us, and I pray that we can be like that Samaritan and stop and care for the needs of others.
00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:55.039
Uh because there are a lot of people hurting, and it's not always like Greg said, that we're not bleeding, but there is hurt on the inside.
00:15:55.360 --> 00:16:07.679
And that hurt on the inside can be devastating to people, and you called us to serve and to love, and uh what better way, God, and than to just listen and uh pray with those who are are hurting.
00:16:08.159 --> 00:16:12.000
We just thank you, God, again, for this podcast and this opportunity to to do this.
00:16:12.240 --> 00:16:17.919
We thank you for Merrill Brothers allowing us to do this, and uh just pray, God, that you continue to bless this company.
00:16:18.000 --> 00:16:20.799
I pray that we would always put you first in all that we do.
00:16:22.320 --> 00:16:35.279
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we pause today to recognize that you're God and that you alone sit on the throne, and so we can cast all of our cares on you because you care about us.
00:16:35.519 --> 00:16:49.919
And that's uh the first place where we can do casting as we understand that uh you care deeply about every issue of our lives, and you're our refuge and strength, our very present help in our time of trouble.
00:16:50.159 --> 00:17:08.400
So we're just so grateful for this season of the year and for uh the fact that uh you allow crops to grow and the ground to fertilize and rain to come, and we're uh excited about the harvest that's uh ahead, and so pray for uh an abundant harvest again this year.
00:17:08.559 --> 00:17:30.240
00:17:30.400 --> 00:17:32.400
So thank you for this harvest.
00:17:32.480 --> 00:17:56.960
And um as we think about uh farmers, we think about the drivers that are part of this company uh in particular all over the all over the country who are uh taking products, who are picking up uh sludge, who are delivering uh things uh that are so valuable uh that we need your direction, we need your safety, we need your protection.
00:17:57.119 --> 00:18:05.680
And so we're just thankful for uh the skilled drivers that you've given to us uh that are uh making this company happen in so many ways.
00:18:05.839 --> 00:18:09.119
Without them, we really would cease to exist.
00:18:09.440 --> 00:18:12.960
And so we're just so grateful for them and pray you'll bless them and their families.
00:18:13.119 --> 00:18:15.119
A lot of times they're they're gone a lot.
00:18:15.279 --> 00:18:27.200
They spend a lot of hours, and so we just pray that the times at their home will be wonderful times, that there'll be times of refreshment and times of encouragement and times of building up one another.
00:18:27.440 --> 00:18:34.160
So we uh we're just so grateful for the opportunity to um spend time with you and with one another today.
00:18:34.319 --> 00:18:35.920
It's in Jesus' name we pray.
00:18:36.160 --> 00:18:36.640
Amen.
00:18:36.880 --> 00:18:37.440
Amen.
00:18:37.680 --> 00:18:40.880
So thanks for joining us for another episode of Solid Start.
00:18:40.960 --> 00:18:44.079
Keep growing, keep encouraging, keep making a difference.
00:18:44.319 --> 00:18:55.920
And this week in particular, allow people to interrupt you in order that you can walk alongside of them and care for them, even though not every hurt bleeds.
00:18:56.319 --> 00:18:58.319
We can still do something to make a difference.
00:18:58.480 --> 00:18:59.759
So take care, my friends.
00:19:00.160 --> 00:19:00.640
Bye.
