# Embracing Change: Lessons from the Air Force
> Shelli Brunswick shares insights on mentorship and adaptability.
In a recent conversation, Shelli Brunswick reflects on her journey from joining the Air Force to becoming a leader. Her story is not just about military life but also about the invaluable lessons learned along the way.
## The Journey Begins
Shelli’s adventure began in the 1980s when she enlisted in the Air Force, seeking adventure and opportunities. She recalls her initial days at boot camp, emphasizing the importance of camaraderie and adaptability. "I wanted to see the world, and when I joined the Air Force, that was the best way to do it," she shares. Her first assignment took her to Turkey, followed by Germany, showcasing the diverse experiences that shaped her.
## Lessons from Boot Camp
Boot camp was a transformative experience for Shelli. "You learn that you don’t know everything you think you know," she explains. The rigorous training taught her discipline and teamwork, vital skills for any leader. "You have to be a good follower before you can be a good leader," she emphasizes, highlighting the importance of humility and listening.
Shelli also reflects on the challenges of adapting to life in such a communal environment, saying, "Going from being an only child to being with 60 women was different." This transition taught her resilience and the value of shared experiences.
## Embrace the Moment
A pivotal lesson Shelli learned was to "bloom where you’re planted." She advises, "Enjoy every day. You may not like the job, but it's the people that get you through." This perspective resonates with many, as it reminds us to find joy in our current circumstances, even when faced with difficulties.
Ari Block echoes this sentiment, stating, "Sometimes the worst possible pain can lead to the most amazing moments." He shares a personal story of a challenging trip that, in retrospect, became a cherished memory. This idea of finding joy amidst suffering is crucial for building strong relationships.
## The Role of Mentorship
The conversation shifts to the importance of mentorship. Shelli believes that mentorship is a two-way street, requiring both parties to be engaged and ready. "When you’re not ready, you’re not ready," she says, emphasizing the need for genuine interest in personal growth.
Shelli describes her approach to mentoring as more of a coaching relationship, where she helps individuals explore their life journeys. "It’s about a relationship where both people are giving and receiving," she adds. This mutual exchange fosters growth and understanding.
## Continuous Learning
As the discussion progresses, Shelli reflects on the need for mentors to also seek mentorship. "The older I get, the less I know," she admits. This humility is essential for continuous growth and self-awareness, reminding us all that learning is a lifelong journey.
