00:00:03
Speaker 1: Oh, oh, oh, it's Mac and Bo on your radio, baby.
00:00:07
Speaker 2: This is my friend Matt. Posh, come on, Posh. This is my friend T-Bone. Let's have some fun. I can't go to work without listening to Mac and Bone. Do it live. It was bad.
00:00:29
Speaker 3: I mean, and listen, there are going to be days like this for Monroe Freeling and to a lesser degree, Rasheed Walker. I mean, his fingerprints were on some of those pressures too. But you've got two new starters at both tackle spots. That is significant. And I think You know, during preseason and practices where it's three-quarters speed, you know, all right, okay, Monroe Freeling looks like he's doing okay. And I do think the future remains bright for him. But going against two of the top edge rushers in the league, he was overmatched.
00:01:08
Speaker 4: That is Joe Person with Sheena Quick and our guy Dunk on the Panthers Collective podcast. Last night, they reacted to the joint practice. They saw the same things, Bone, we saw with our eyes yesterday. How could you not see it? The Panthers offensive line and offensive tackle specifically. Getting a given to him by Hunter and Anderson.
00:01:31
Speaker 2: The show pro staff did more protecting yesterday than the Patriots offensive line did. It was hard to get into practice yesterday. You had to know somebody. Thankfully, I met somebody along the way that asked me about Murphy, and they let me in yesterday. There you go, baby. There you go, Bone.
00:01:46
Speaker 4: Your celebrity status gets you a lot of places in this town. If it wasn't for my dogs, what would I be doing half the time? So Murphy's getting famous, too?
00:01:54
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:01:54
Speaker 2: All right. All right, Murph.
00:01:57
Speaker 4: I don't know if you'll ever be Mabel Murph, but you're on your way though, baby. You are on your way right now.
00:02:01
Speaker 2: Maniac. Oh man.
00:02:03
Speaker 4: Uh, by the way, the text line seems to think bone. I did Darren Waller wrong here. Um, uh, AC says Mac, Mac telling Darren Waller, he's putting them on the practice squad. I mean, just being honest, it's been a conversation like, you know, Mike K brought it up. We've talked about it. If he's not fully up to speed, do you practice squad him? and then you can activate him whenever. I think he's going to be on the active roster. To KB's point, that I brought that up with him, this dude still, at 33, still has some juice and some ability to do things other tight ends don't on this roster.
00:02:41
Speaker 2: There's a desire to get back to a level that he was at as well. He's a really good dude, and I was also struck yesterday, and so was Fiddy Mack. Nobody will ever pass Greg Olson. in the good-looking tight end rankings. Fitty, Darren Waller's a good-looking man, is he not? There's a, it's like a model. Are you putting him ahead of Olsen? No, because Olsen's in the rugged category. And that's your type? Yeah, Waller's more in the mob, but that guy, Fitty even acknowledged, Fitty was sweating next to this guy yesterday.
00:03:12
Speaker 6: You could put that man in an underwear catalog and I wouldn't complain.
00:03:18
Speaker 4: This is the joint practice analysis you don't get elsewhere, y'all.
00:03:22
Speaker 2: And there might be a reason for that. You don't get this elsewhere. I was lost in his eyes yesterday when this guy was talking. Also, Mac, I'd like to announce I'm officially retiring as of today. Retiring from interacting with bebop.
00:03:34
Speaker 5: I'm done.
00:03:34
Speaker 1: I'm out.
00:03:35
Speaker 2: I am completely out. Could be a good move. Bebop on the text line is like something that you get at Myrtle Beach and it never goes away.
00:03:43
Speaker 4: Could be a good move for your own health. Miss Sweet Cheeks also thinks I did Waller wrong. Says Mac was going to make sure Waller knew he was old. I'm just trying to do real talk with the man, baby. I'm just trying to do some real talk with this guy.
00:03:56
Speaker 2: All right. Let's do it.
00:03:59
Speaker 4: This is, by the way, this is a, remember the guy got mad yesterday, said we always read Bebop's text.
00:04:03
Speaker 2: This is a, I'm not reading any of Bebop's text. No, he's out. He's done. He's not blocked, but maybe he is blocked. I may read them tomorrow.
00:04:11
Speaker 4: I just, today for me, it's just, it's going to be a day where we're going to talk over here at the adults table. And let's talk about this offense. How much are you concerned about the Carolina Panthers offense? We have 16 days, no, 17, 17 days until the season opener against Chicago. They had, again, somebody said, Mac, I thought you weren't going to overreact.
00:04:36
Speaker 2: I'm not overreacting.
00:04:37
Speaker 4: I'm telling you right now, it was an absolute mammoth beatdown of our offense. I thought the defense probably won the day slightly, my opinion, but I cannot describe it. I can't sugarcoat it. It was absolute demolition. It was like a car stop.
00:04:56
Speaker 2: All right, what a great day. And a train came through and you couldn't stop it, right? It was horrible.
00:05:01
Speaker 4: The pass protection on the outside was absolutely terrible. But it gives them some stuff, Bone. They've learned some stuff about their tackles and they've learned some stuff that they might have to do moving forward. But are you worried, Bone, about this offense?
00:05:18
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:05:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, I am. It's not just based off yesterday. It's the Buffalo beginning of that game. It's the joint session against Jacksonville. It's the first drive against Jacksonville. Look, it's still a simple size that is in the preseason and practice. So it's not like complete a thousand percent, oh my God, panic. But we've seen enough now where And we've seen enough of this offense in the past under Canales where it doesn't really feel right now, Mac, like this offense is going to get off to a fast start. And when you have a week one opponent that is the Bears that we know, is going to put up some points against every team they play with Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams at offense. I don't feel great right now about where this offense is heading into a game in week one in a couple weeks where they have to show up early in that game. They're not getting some offense they can go and win a game 16-13 against in week number one. No, that's the thing. You feel like they might have to put up some points. This has to be like a 31-27 type game. I'm worried about it right now.
00:06:19
Speaker 4: Good news is the Bears' defense bone was in the bottom five or so last year in the NFL. They've got injuries on that side of the ball, and that defense is nowhere near the Houston Texans.
00:06:31
Speaker 2: So that's the good news, right? But I think.
00:06:34
Speaker 4: Yesterday was a reminder to those of us that have thought Freeling's having a pretty solid camp, that he's a rookie, and no matter how talented he is, that mama said there'd be days like this and there will be. So I think that's definitely in your head. I was very surprised by Rasheed Walker because the pass protection is his strong point. The run blocking is something that you think is his weakness. You also have, you brought up the slow starts under Canales. I'll give you a number too. I'll put a number on it for you.
00:07:07
Speaker 5: In the.
00:07:09
Speaker 4: First two weeks of the season, so it's four total games, right? Two years for Canales, four-game sample. The Panthers average 11 points a game. Their offense has started off so damn slow.
00:07:23
Speaker 5: All right, what a great day.
00:07:26
Speaker 4: And you see it a day like yesterday, and you're like, is it going to be another slow start? Now, I would remind everybody, we started very slow last year, lost our first two games and won the division.
00:07:36
Speaker 2: Right? We still play in the NFC South.
00:07:38
Speaker 4: I don't think we need to sort, like there are people on the text line freaking out, man, the season's, I don't think we need all that energy, but can we have like a nuanced conversation about our concerns about the offense?
00:07:51
Speaker 2: That's, I think we have to do that. Yeah, no, I mean, we could still think that the team will be similar to last year, but we thought that at the beginning of the year, the offense would get off to a quicker start based off all the... progression the moves but right now it feels like they haven't made much progress at all in terms of how they're starting a season and that's a little frustrating honestly absolutely so send your text and i'm not worried about there are some people will read off the text later on from yesterday but this isn't like oh my god i'm long term worried about free link like look he oh no He's going to take his line. He's also playing the right side. He's going against a couple of beasts yesterday. We knew it would be a warning experience, but we didn't know, Mac, that like you and I, that Monroe Freeling may have trouble getting out of kindergarten, though. That was rough yesterday. That was an experience like you and I had. But here's the thing. But again, he's only going to benefit because.
00:08:49
Speaker 5: Of that yesterday.
00:08:50
Speaker 4: Here's the point that has to be said. I'm not sure we talked about it since the first hour. There are people texting about this. They're not game planning for a joint practice. They're also not really adjusting in a joint practice. Like a lot of texters are like, what's wrong with the coaches? Why didn't they adjust? Start giving them some help. Why didn't they start throwing screens? because you get the feeling bone. They wanted to really test their tackles against probably the best edge rush duo in the league and kind of see, okay, what's going to happen. Like it's the rare situation bone where Bryce can't get hit and you can totally test the tackles on islands.
00:09:27
Speaker 2: And they chipped a little bit.
00:09:28
Speaker 4: Can Alice talked about that, but there certainly wasn't a lot of tight ends over there for help. So like now they know, right. Now they know what can happen. And I think, you know, Montez Sweat lines up, Bone. Last year, Sweat, the Bears' best edge rusher, lines up 83% of the time last season over the right tackle. So that's going to be Monroe's assignment. So now you see what kind of help you need and what kind of, you know, maybe we got to run more screen than we thought. So, like, I think that's the good part of this. from yesterday's practice.
00:10:01
Speaker 2: They're not attacking it as if they're trying to win a regular season game. They are, yes, they're trying to play well, but also it's, they're trying to see where What do they have to work on the next two weeks so they can go win games when they matter? So they're not sitting there calling timeouts and game planning and adjusting, and they're not chip-locking. I saw people yesterday saying, did they use tight ends? They're trying to figure out how far along Freeling is. They want to know what are the weaknesses. Because now, with the way this whole preseason sets up, Mac, there's a lot of time after the game tomorrow. There's a lot of time before the first game. It used to be pretty quick. Now, because they don't play as many games normally, In the preseason, there's a lot of time before week one. They want to know what is our biggest area of focus. the next two plus weeks. So when we go play the bears, we can make adjustments. It's not about winning yesterday. It's about winning week. Number 100%. That's what I'm saying. And like, it's to sink or swim. And if you sink, we're going to help you be able to swim in week one. We're going to know what we can do in order to help you and stuff like that. So I think that's got.
00:11:06
Speaker 4: To be mentioned here as well, but I would be lying if I came on and said, I'm not worried about this offense and possibly another slow start.
00:11:13
Speaker 2: I will say this, too.
00:11:14
Speaker 4: Montez Sweat's a pretty good edge rusher, and he will be on Freeling's side, it seems like, most of the time in Week 1. But Sweat Boney is the only edge rusher in the top 25 in sacks from last year that we play in the first three weeks. Miles Garrett was traded. Thank the Lord, hallelujah, for that. Because we would have seen him bone in Week 2. And we remember what— or Week 3. And we remember what he did to Icky in Icky's debut. Um, so you don't have to worry about him. Um, and then the Falcons bone, you don't have to worry about James Pierce. He's suspended.
00:11:49
Speaker 2: He won't play. They won't even have Walker either.
00:11:52
Speaker 4: So until you get to eight and Montez sweat in week one, eight and Hutchinson in week four, but weeks two and weeks three, Jared verse, I think was like 28th. In sacks last year, he's now on the Browns, came back in the trade for Garrett. So I do think, Bone, it's not a horrible start to the season in terms of edge rushers.
00:12:12
Speaker 2: Matt, we had something, a miracle happening on the text line. We had five straight texts. trying to be upbeat about yesterday there we go baby there we go it's just practice guys thanks for being logical uh trying to say a lot of praise for houston and let's remember that that might be the number one defense in the league our streak got broken up though by weatherman mark oh no marky should i read it have we lost you mark i read it as mark yeah yeah good morning guys i'm getting worried about our panthers man.
00:12:46
Speaker 4: God, who wants to break it to Mark that not only did the Panthers' offense, first-team offense, look rough yesterday, but also the lovely Kelly Bardic said that she will not go out on a date with weatherman Mark. We tried to make that love connection yesterday, and she said no. She will not stop by the weather station. I just don't understand why not.
00:13:06
Speaker 2: Is it possible chicks don't dig the turbines? Is that possible, Bo? Well, boy, my date and wife's got a cold front. Oh, man.
00:13:14
Speaker 4: Anyway, I'm glad some people are trying to keep it positive here. This texter says, is it just me or are we not running the football at all? Jonathan Brooks hasn't done much except for a highlight here or there.
00:13:27
Speaker 2: He had a highlight yesterday, Fit.
00:13:29
Speaker 6: Right?
00:13:29
Speaker 4: On the pass where Bryce moved away from pressure, of course, and hit him downfield. He's really good in that. You get him on a linebacker bone, out of the backfield, wheeling. He's really good in that role. The running game yesterday felt like it was getting stuffed. It felt like we were stuffing their running game. I also think it's probably harder to run in those joint practices. I remember a guy I know that coaches O-line in high school would always say, it's o-line plays a mindset like when you're trying to do practice o-line play and you're trying to do like joint practice o-line play like it's not the same as when it's a game and it's like i'm gonna go obliterate that guy you know so i do think it's a little harder to run in these but yeah i don't think the first team offense has run great but i.
00:14:19
Speaker 2: Have in the preseason i have an observation slash question for you about that is that where icky's missed the most Like Walker can hold his own. I know yesterday was rough, but Walker can pass protect all right, but Icky's run blocking will be where he's missed the most. Definitely. That might show out early because of that. That could be what the issue there is. And Shuba's not been in there either.
00:14:42
Speaker 4: Whereas we thought we'd be better with Walker at pass pro. By the way, Walker was not all right in pass pro yesterday. Narrator, narrator. He was Rasheed Wallace yesterday. He was not okay yesterday in pass pro. But again, they were going against two absolute beastly fellas. Let's see what else is going on in the text line. Mac is freaking out. I knew it was going to happen. It's cracking me up. Another texter. Is it wrong that the fact that you guys are now worried and not cocky is actually a good thing to me? What do you think about that, Boney?
00:15:16
Speaker 2: I don't think you're– I think that you're not in freak-out mode, but how– Concerned. You can't come in and be dancing a jig today after yesterday. Dancing a jig. You were watching both sides of the field yesterday. I came in there. You looked like you were– I was locked, baby. You were sweating buckets. You were worried but not freaking.
00:15:34
Speaker 5: Out, I'd say.
00:15:35
Speaker 4: Defense did a lot of good things, man, but I'm definitely concerned about the offense. I mean, look at their preseason, Boney. Five drives, seven points. That's not a great points per drive. So for the first team offense, this texter says, I wouldn't be as worried if we had preseason reps left for the first team offense. But of course, Dave doesn't want to make them work after that pathetic day on Wednesday.
00:16:00
Speaker 2: It wasn't pathetic. He told us it's a great day. Great day. A fantastic day for Monroe. That's exactly All right.
00:16:08
Speaker 5: What a great day.
00:16:09
Speaker 2: Weatherman Mark has weighed in on the rejection of one Kelly Bardick. Oh, my God, my heart's broken. We tried, Marky. We tried, baby. Yeah.
00:16:17
Speaker 4: All right, so give us a list of the other celebrity ladies in Charlotte you have a crush on. You've gone from Strode to Vashti, Kelly Bardic. Let us know who else, and we will— Not Patty the Batty, though.
00:16:29
Speaker 2: That's Fitties. We will try to play Love Canary. Leave Fitties woman alone.
00:16:32
Speaker 6: And, Mac, I felt like I sold Weatherman Mark really, really well. Like, has a weather station, a cute dog named Winston.
00:16:39
Speaker 2: You tried, man. You did try. Finney's had one date. Now he's playing matchmaker with people. Yeah, Finney. You should try this, Mark. Dating's fun. Finney's a guru now, baby. All right, man. Yesterday we had a great time with Nick Scott, Panther Safety, one of the best talkers on the team. He's a leader. I really think getting to know Nick Scott a little bit more will be fun for the audience here.
00:17:03
Speaker 5: Great dude.
00:17:03
Speaker 2: You'll hear him next. Sports Radio 92.7 WFNZ. Welcome back, everybody.
00:17:21
Speaker 4: It is the Mack and Bone Show right here on 92.7 WFNZ in Charlotte. Panthers camp is winding down, and we've got to talk to a member of this defense that fans are so excited about this season. He is Nick Scott, safety for your Carolina Panthers. Nick, thanks for hanging with us, man.
00:17:39
Speaker 2: How are you doing?
00:17:40
Speaker 5: No problem, man. Thanks for having me. I'm good. I'm excited.
00:17:44
Speaker 7: Camp's winding down, like you said, so there's two parts to that excitement. I'm happy to be here.
00:17:48
Speaker 4: I know it's not like a Spartanburg camp, like where you're away, like that.
00:17:52
Speaker 5: Hey, however you slice it up, man, camp is camp. It's a grind.
00:17:56
Speaker 2: You're still happy that it's done.
00:17:58
Speaker 5: Exactly.
00:17:59
Speaker 4: Your eyes lit up. You smiled when I said fans are excited about this defense. I don't know if you hear that, but it's additions like Phillips and Lloyd, and it's the jump y'all made last year as a defense. internally are you guys kind of feeling like, yeah, we're ready to make another jump?
00:18:16
Speaker 2: Like how do you feel about it?
00:18:17
Speaker 5: I feel great, man. You guys are excited. We're excited.
00:18:21
Speaker 7: We put the work in, and we got some great pieces, some great pieces added to this defense from last year. We got all the right guys. And even with those new additions, everybody's really locked in on the system. There hasn't been any drop-off in communication or understanding of the scheme. So that's just going to propel our game because the guys can still play fast.
00:18:39
Speaker 2: After one of the camp fights this year, you and Bryce had a long conversation.
00:18:42
Speaker 1: Yeah.
00:18:43
Speaker 2: And we really marveled at your leadership in that moment there. How important is that for you, not just to be an important piece to the defense, but to be a vocal guy and a leader for this group as well?
00:18:53
Speaker 5: Yeah, it's really important.
00:18:54
Speaker 7: And, you know, it's not anything I try to force, but, you know, wherever it's needed, I try to fill in and be that voice. You know, we're a physical group. And any team that you're on, you're going to have those conversations that you need to have. We're pushing each other every day. Some days it's 100 degrees out here, so temperatures will flare up a little bit. But it's all love, and it's all in the spirit of making each other better day in and day out. And if we have times where we've got to have some spillover and communicate with one another and figure out what kind of tempo we want to have, that's just what we do.
00:19:25
Speaker 2: Sometimes we have radio fights. We might need you to step in and help us out a little bit.
00:19:28
Speaker 5: Hey, I'm a great mediator, man. I got a psych degree, so you ever need me, call me. All right.
00:19:33
Speaker 4: Your phone going to be on speed dial.
00:19:36
Speaker 2: As many times as we argue. It'll be like it's 630 in the morning. What could they possibly be? How are they screaming already? I love it, man. Hey, we bring the intensity, just like y'all do on the field.
00:19:44
Speaker 5: It's a sign of a great relationship, man. All right.
00:19:47
Speaker 2: We're talking to Nick Scott, Panthers safety.
00:19:50
Speaker 4: So we were watching the joint practice, and it seems like most of the media focus is on what Houston's defense did.
00:19:57
Speaker 2: I mean, they got after Bryce.
00:20:00
Speaker 4: But I was watching a bunch of you guys, and I thought there was a lot of good stuff from you guys. How did you feel about how y'all fared against Houston in that test?
00:20:09
Speaker 5: I felt really good about it.
00:20:10
Speaker 7: I mean, we got a great rush and great guys in the back end and everything like that.
00:20:15
Speaker 5: It was a real good day with good work. Houston made some plays. That's just part of the game.
00:20:20
Speaker 7: But I really felt like we walked away and made the plays that we were supposed to and did well with the situations that we were presented with. Houston does a really good job of getting the ball out fast for whatever reason.
00:20:32
Speaker 5: You know, that's just their style.
00:20:34
Speaker 7: A lot of short stuff. And, like, we're not tripping off that, especially in the back end. You know, you can dink and dunk all you want, but teams in a game are going to get impatient. They're going to start taking their shots. So as long as we stay disciplined in the back end, we should be good. But one thing that we never question on this team is guys' toughness or want to. So that's the expectation. Guys came out. We're hitting as usual. We're communicating and talking. So that's all good, and we can always build off that.
00:21:04
Speaker 2: How special is this secondary room when you look at the mix of stars like J.C. Horn, Merrick, we think is one of the best in the game. You've got yourself. You've got Mike Jack. You've also got young guys. How good of a room is this right now for the secondary?
00:21:17
Speaker 7: I think it's as good of a room as I've been a part of. Just the guys that you mentioned and I think what's so special about the group is not necessarily just the talent, but just the way that we work and play off one another. You know, we truly have good relationships. We enjoy each other. We enjoy spending time with one another. And that does two things for you. It just builds off the camaraderie, and it allows you to have tough conversations with guys. So there's not one guy in the room that can't be challenged by another, and that's all because there's a mutual respect with one another for each other's craft, and we all.
00:21:49
Speaker 5: Care about it deeply.
00:21:51
Speaker 4: What's it like playing for Coach Avero? Because he's a guy that, you know, he'll be a hot-button guy with fans sometimes. Like, end of the Saints game, oh, my, why aren't we blitzing? End of the Rams playoff game. You know, things like that. But that's easy for us to say on our couches or whatever. Like, what's he like as a coach? And how do you feel about schematically? Like, what are the strengths, things that we don't see as a fan schematically?
00:22:17
Speaker 5: I think he's great to play for, man. He's so smart.
00:22:21
Speaker 7: Just with his understanding of the game and how offenses are trying to attack us. You know, I try not to give too much away from a schematic standpoint, but I think his greatest strength that people see with just the guys who make plays is he is so good at identifying what somebody's strong suit is and putting them in that position to shine. I don't know too many guys, too many coaches out there that would have Trey Merrick in as many positions as he was in last year, and he thrived in it, right? He's a physical safety that can play up on the line of scrimmage, and just talking to Trey last year and learning him, he's like, man, I never played this type of game. Like, when I was over there, I was in the back end, and I didn't even know I was really a box safety. It's like, he does a great job of identifying players and putting them in a position to be successful, which is why, you know, we had guys that really showed up last year and had good seasons, so that's just a testament to his football character and knowledge and his attention to detail when it comes to his roster.
00:23:26
Speaker 2: That's a good call.
00:23:26
Speaker 4: I don't think, Bone, people talk enough about the creativity of using him as a chess piece.
00:23:31
Speaker 2: It's more about the results that people react to and not necessarily the reason why things happen. So you're a Penn State guy. Yes, sir. Drop in a we are, Mac, for me. We are, baby.
00:23:39
Speaker 5: We are, Penn State.
00:23:40
Speaker 2: But you're also a Fairfax, Virginia guy as well, right? That's true. So James Franklin goes Virginia Tech.
00:23:45
Speaker 6: Yep.
00:23:46
Speaker 2: How excited should that fan base be for the country?
00:23:48
Speaker 7: I think they should be extremely excited. James Franklin is a guy, he knows good ball, he knows good players. He's going to get the right guys in Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech has all the pieces to build a strong program that should be competing for an ACC championship every year. So I'm not worried about them. Those fans should be extremely excited. He's a great coach. I had a great time with him, and I was sad to see him go. I still bleed blue, but I'll be rooting a little bit for the Hokies for sure.
00:24:18
Speaker 2: Hey, man. But Matt Campbell, though, baby.
00:24:21
Speaker 4: We're the Cyclones East with all the guys he brought.
00:24:25
Speaker 2: Plus the schedule. Have you peaked that schedule yet?
00:24:28
Speaker 5: I like that one.
00:24:30
Speaker 7: It's definitely a nice introduction into the Big Ten for Campbell, man.
00:24:34
Speaker 5: I'm excited about him, too.
00:24:35
Speaker 7: The thing I love about him, just with the glimpses I've seen, is just how he interacts with every position, every side of the ball. and is able to talk about the game with each person and give them tips.
00:24:48
Speaker 5: So it's apparent that he's just a.
00:24:49
Speaker 7: Ball guy and that his knowledge of the game is extensive past the offensive side of the ball. He can talk to defensive guys, D-line, linebacker, DBs, all that stuff.
00:25:00
Speaker 2: All around, Coach. One more quick question. Is Excel a trash talker out there? When Excel's out there, is he talking trash, or is it kind of like we have no idea what he just said?
00:25:09
Speaker 5: I don't know. If he is talking trash, I can't understand it.
00:25:15
Speaker 2: It wouldn't be very effective.
00:25:16
Speaker 5: Exactly. You just kind of nod and go back to the huddle.
00:25:20
Speaker 2: Okay, last. I swear this is my last one. You asked your last one. I'm going to ask my last one.
00:25:24
Speaker 5: Y'all got as many as you.
00:25:26
Speaker 2: Oh, we're good? Okay, we're good.
00:25:27
Speaker 5: All right.
00:25:27
Speaker 2: I'm starting to get a little tired.
00:25:29
Speaker 4: It's been a long day. You were talking about the way Coach E used Merrick.
00:25:35
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:25:35
Speaker 4: Well, it brought up the thought of the experimentation with JC in the slot.
00:25:40
Speaker 2: Yeah.
00:25:41
Speaker 4: So far this year. What does, like, how does that look so far? Are we good enough on the outside to where, hey, Will Lee or CSW or somebody can hold it down outside? And what are the benefits of JC being inside like that?
00:25:57
Speaker 7: Well, I think the first benefit of JC being in the slot is just a different feel and a different perspective of the game. Anytime you can move a guy and have them see the game a little bit different, it's only going to help them when they go back home to their normal spot. So he's growing his knowledge of the game schematically and understanding what the guys around him are going to be doing and how he can work off his leverage and things like that, getting that nickel roll. As far as guys that have been outside, there's been a plethora of guys that have been rotating in, and they've been doing a great job. I think you guys have seen Shaw Smith-Wade showing up in the past couple weeks and just his abilities. He's just a football guy and a natural. Will Lee has come in and done everything that we've asked him to do from a rookie standpoint. He's continued to get better and make plays on the ball. So regardless of where eight is at, I think we got a good number of guys.
00:26:45
Speaker 5: Corey Thornton is another guy.
00:26:47
Speaker 7: I mean, if that's an active competition between those three guys, they've been making it really hard on the coaches. We feel like we got some guys who can come in and play any position and they're doing a really nice job. So wherever those guys are at, I'm going to do my best to just talk to them and communicate at a high level so they can play calm and do their thing. And I'm confident with those guys, whoever's on the field, we're going to play some good ball.
00:27:08
Speaker 5: All right, awesome, man.
00:27:09
Speaker 2: Is that your final question? I swear, I'm not lying.
00:27:12
Speaker 5: That was my final. Although I think he wanted more.
00:27:14
Speaker 2: I think he wanted more.
00:27:15
Speaker 5: That's a great question. I could do this all day, man.
00:27:17
Speaker 2: I was going to bring up, wait, we're close friends with J.J. Jansen.
00:27:20
Speaker 5: Okay, yeah.
00:27:21
Speaker 2: We haven't asked anything. Do you ever look at J.J. and think, like, man, that guy's been around a long time?
00:27:26
Speaker 5: Yeah, man.
00:27:28
Speaker 2: He was doing this when Joe Paul was up at State.
00:27:31
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's insane, man. He's definitely an old guy. He's got a lot of wisdom. A lot of wisdom behind those eyes.
00:27:39
Speaker 2: Like an old owl, we say.
00:27:40
Speaker 7: Like an old owl, and he's got some great wisdom, some great information, whether you want it or not, because he is a talker. I know if you know him well, you know that.
00:27:49
Speaker 5: I see him sometimes talking to somebody and be like, hey, man, blink if you need help. But J.J., he's a great dude, man. He's a great presence in the locker room.
00:28:00
Speaker 7: Anytime you can have somebody that's– been around since the nfl got started uh.
00:28:05
Speaker 2: It just it helped it helps big time that is hilarious we picture him doing like a general talk show in the locker room you know oh yeah very ex-guests all right you're my guest now let's talk about it but he's got a whole set and a couch and yeah that's the way it should be.
00:28:19
Speaker 5: That's a great idea man you we should set something up a mic.
00:28:22
Speaker 2: For him and everything locker room talks in The Today Show with J.J.
00:28:25
Speaker 3: Jansen.
00:28:26
Speaker 4: Exactly.
00:28:26
Speaker 5: The news of the day.
00:28:27
Speaker 7: The only twist is you don't ever get to know whether or not you're going to be a guest.
00:28:31
Speaker 5: He just selects you.
00:28:32
Speaker 2: Just springs it on you. And when you're a guest, you don't talk.
00:28:35
Speaker 5: Exactly. Just let him talk. You nod and smile.
00:28:38
Speaker 2: Have you ever been on Car Talk or no?
00:28:40
Speaker 7: I haven't been on Car Talk, so I got a little bit of a quarrel with him with that. He's got to get me on Car Talk. Me and him, we got some natural back and forth. I might try to call a.
00:28:49
Speaker 2: Game with him at some point. Has he been doing Car Talk? Have I seen it? I haven't seen a cart talk in camp yet. I haven't seen one.
00:28:54
Speaker 5: I'll get on him, man. We got, what, two more days to do it before the game?
00:28:58
Speaker 2: He better get after it. Forget about that long snapping stuff. He's going to be riding around everywhere.
00:29:02
Speaker 5: Exactly. We'll make it happen.
00:29:04
Speaker 2: Nick Scott from your Carolina Panthers. That's great. We'll pick it outside his house if we have to to get you on cart talk.
00:29:10
Speaker 5: Oh, man, I'll be out there with you.
00:29:11
Speaker 2: Okay, good to hear. All right, man, good meeting you, and best of luck this year.
00:29:15
Speaker 5: Thanks, guys, man. Happy to be on.
00:29:16
Speaker 2: All right, man, it's awesome.
00:29:18
Speaker 4: That is Nick Scott's great personality, really one of the guys, Bone, that is one of those, you know.
00:29:25
Speaker 2: Leaders in the locker room, right?
00:29:26
Speaker 4: You know, on the defense side of the ball, we talked to him about him and Bryce and Mary getting together and hashing out that real physical practice the one day. It just seems like a great dude, man. And we're getting a lot of texts, you know, because fans are rough on him, man. Two years ago, he had a rough, rough year. And fans are rough on him. We're getting a lot of texts from people that are like, man, I never realized how cool of a guy he is. So that was cool to see that side of Nick Scott. He's a guy that you want to see succeed. Like you want him to find success. A level of success.
00:29:56
Speaker 2: You know that off the field, Mac, whether it's coaching, talking, that dude's got a future that's bright as hell. Definitely. Speaking of bright futures, Fitty Marlowe with an update. That's right.
00:30:05
Speaker 4: What a segue, baby. What a segue. Daddy, what's up, baby? What you got over there?
00:30:11
Speaker 2: It's all right to be a little Fitty. In a little hometown or a big old city. Might as well share, might as well smile. Life goes on for a little Fitty. Wow. Thank you, guys.
00:30:25
Speaker 6: This update brought to you by the H & S Roofing and Gutter Company. If you see something wrong with your roof or your gutters, don't wait for a small problem to become a big one. Give them a call. Mac, they'll give you a free estimate.
00:30:38
Speaker 1: 704-334-9934.
00:30:38
Speaker 6: That is 704-334-9934.
00:30:39
Speaker 2: One final time.
00:30:39
Speaker 4: 704-334-9934.
00:30:39
Speaker 6: Someone that may have to call in for help. South Carolina quarterback, Lenoris Sellers.
00:30:58
Speaker 2: What happened? He loses internship at the golf course? He's not hurt, is he?
00:31:02
Speaker 6: Was pouring over the ESPN list of the top 100 players for the 2026 season. 18 quarterbacks listed. Not mention the quarterback of South Carolina.
00:31:14
Speaker 2: Not mention in what? All 100? That is correct. So, hold on. They listed 100 players, and he is not ranked in the top 100 entering the season. Uh-oh, bone. You're telling me that there's at least 18 quarterbacks. Who knows where they put him, ultimately. There's 18 quarterbacks better than him.
00:31:33
Speaker 6: According to ESPN.
00:31:34
Speaker 2: That's just simply we've gone way too far. I'm glad that he's not on there from the simple standpoint of motivation and to prove the doubters wrong. But, Matt, we have gone way too far in the narrative on Sellers. Last year, I admit, like, obviously, the way it went, yeah, he did get overhyped. He didn't play up to that standard. But now he's not a top 100 player. That's a little bit ridiculous.
00:31:59
Speaker 4: Improved O-line. Kendall Bryles at OC. Chip on his shoulder.
00:32:03
Speaker 2: I agree. That's crazy.
00:32:05
Speaker 4: And by the way, it's kind of weird because, yeah, some people, Bone, are kind of sleeping on cellars after last year.
00:32:11
Speaker 2: But there's plenty of dudes. Jordan Reed, McShea.
00:32:14
Speaker 4: They've all talked about how high he could still go in the draft and the big year that he could have this year. So I'm pretty damn shocked by that one. The best thing was.
00:32:22
Speaker 2: The Arizona quarterback is on there. He's good. I'm not trying to knock those guys, but there's comparable guys. You got. All right. Is that in their situation with the Sacramento offensive line last year? Not all those guys would be on that list. Oh, no, not at all.
00:32:38
Speaker 4: I mean, he went through he basically went through all year what Bryce went through yesterday.
00:32:42
Speaker 1: Yes.
00:32:42
Speaker 4: By the way, the best part, though, when when Bone found out about this off the air was when he says, clearly, surely they've forgotten about him. Bone going to send a text to the writer. I just want to remind you, I know this.
00:32:57
Speaker 2: Is just an oversight. It was Max Olson of ESPN.com. Send him a text, man. Clearly he just forgot. I'm going to text for a guest spot here so I can really give this guy the old one-two. The old how's your father? Isn't that an oil change? I guess that's not it. I'm not giving out free oil changes. When we come back, random crap. ESPN makes a controversial decision. What is a fart corner? Oreo and chicken collabs seem to be all the rage. And, Mac, we're getting leg-breaking news that Finney may have turned his back on us yesterday with something. Uh-oh. And it hurts. Sports Radio 92.7 WFNZ.
00:33:43
Speaker 1: Random crap, random crap. Mac and Bone talk, random crap. Random crap, random crap. Mac and Bone talk, random crap. Random, random crap. Random crap, random crap.
00:33:59
Speaker 2: What the deuce? Oh, crap. Oh, crap. We stink. like a baby's blowout infested diaper. They talk about crap that is random. It's the Queen City's favorite born in tandem. Mack and Bone. Random crap. Mack and Bone.
00:34:18
Speaker 6: All right, let's do it, y'all.
00:34:19
Speaker 4: Let's get ourselves some random crap. Let's have some fun here with some stories. You're going to hear, by the way, our conversation. We did all these interviews yesterday after the joint practice over there at camp.
00:34:31
Speaker 2: And I love talking to all these guys. A.J.
00:34:33
Speaker 4: Dillon, a fan favorite for the way he's embraced Charlotte. and his running style. He's going to join us top of the hour, 9 o'clock, so stay tuned for that.
00:34:42
Speaker 2: Random crap. Seeing his quads next to yours was really something. Two great athletes when they were in their primes. Two men that are just built different.
00:34:53
Speaker 5: A little bit.
00:34:54
Speaker 2: Made my legs look like fingers. You know what I mean? Seriously.
00:34:57
Speaker 4: Now, Fitty, though, he did appreciate Fitty's quad game. Yeah, game respects game yesterday. By the way, speaking of Fitty, so Chris in Huntersville has told on you, Fitty, and I believe this is, I believe yesterday you pulled a Palachuk is the best way I could put it. Don't say you pulled a Wilkie.
00:35:14
Speaker 2: I don't care! He sucks! You don't want to say that on the radio.
00:35:19
Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
00:35:19
Speaker 2: I think I did.
00:35:20
Speaker 4: I think the way I did it's best. The whole world yesterday loving on Dolly Parton. Literally everybody politically, religiously, racially, like everybody just agreed.
00:35:32
Speaker 2: What an awesome woman. What a talented woman.
00:35:35
Speaker 4: What a woman with a heart of gold that did so many great things for so many people. And then Fitty apparently takes a shot at Dolly Parton.
00:35:42
Speaker 2: Goes after her catalogs.
00:35:43
Speaker 4: On Wes and Walker yesterday. Fitty, why are you blasting Dolly Parton, sir?
00:35:48
Speaker 6: Well, look, I want to make it very clear. Dolly Parton, the person, not going to. I mean, Mac, it's Jesus, Dolly Parton, like two of the best people to walk the face of the earth.
00:35:57
Speaker 2: So why do you do this? Because we. One day after her passing. Because the.
00:36:01
Speaker 6: Two hip hop guys wanted to talk about her music. And all I said was, I know she's got iconic songs. I love her iconic songs. I played them yesterday. But once you get through like her top three or four songs, I'm good. Like for me, I don't view her as someone that like when I, if she pops up on the playlist, unless it's nine to five, Jolene. I'll always love you. I'm probably hitting skip.
00:36:26
Speaker 2: She has 25 No. 1 hits. I know what she has. You're making it about Dolly just the musician, and she was so much more, though. So you're going through her catalog, and it's like, yeah, I mean— Because they were trying.
00:36:39
Speaker 6: To tell me they knew her music better than I. They've never listened to— so did Flounder. Flounder thought Luke Combs invented the genre of country music. Like, I grew up on— I'm a white guy from the South, born in Tennessee. I know all about Dolly Parton's music.
00:36:52
Speaker 4: It doesn't sound like you really appreciate it.
00:36:55
Speaker 6: Her top three or four are iconic.
00:36:57
Speaker 2: But to me, yes, the discussion. She is an icon. The discussion about her. I'm talking about her music, though. Oh, dear. Not hers. She's a great person. The person passes away, and you're the guy that calls them overrated immediately.
00:37:08
Speaker 6: They asked me my thoughts on her music.
00:37:11
Speaker 2: Not on her as an individual, but her whole thing is about her being more than music. Actress, philanthropist. I mean, she's Dolly.
00:37:21
Speaker 4: Yeah, I didn't crap on her. Fitty, when you live a life where you can be known worldwide as just your first name, I'm sorry, man.
00:37:32
Speaker 2: That's special.
00:37:33
Speaker 4: Fitty's getting destroyed on the text line right now. Why couldn't you focus on the positives, Fitty? That's what I'm saying. It's one day after her passing.
00:37:38
Speaker 6: They asked me my thoughts on her music.
00:37:42
Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh.
00:37:43
Speaker 6: You deaf imbecile.
00:37:44
Speaker 2: I don't think you handled it correctly. This is the most Fitty backlash I've seen in a couple days. People are now rooting for your love life to fail, Fitty. It probably will. You're getting bashed so bad. Oh, my gosh. People are just questioning your timing of just kind of analyzing that.
00:37:57
Speaker 5: Timing.
00:37:57
Speaker 4: Not to mention she has 11 Grammys and 25 number one hits.
00:38:00
Speaker 2: But Fitty thinks she's got four songs. By the way. And why would you say that?
00:38:06
Speaker 6: You're so well versed in her music.
00:38:08
Speaker 2: Get out of here.
00:38:09
Speaker 4: When we celebrated her yesterday, why did you say anything? Thank God he didn't. Thank God he saved this for another show.
00:38:14
Speaker 6: I was playing those songs that I love. I love those songs that I played.
00:38:18
Speaker 4: Thank God he saved this for another show. Anyway, let's move on. Let's move on to some more enjoyable fare.
00:38:23
Speaker 6: Big Cat John agreed with Fitty.
00:38:25
Speaker 2: You going to read that text? You pick out the one guy to like 50. Casey agrees with Fitty.
00:38:29
Speaker 6: Clint Tickleman, I agree with Fitty.
00:38:31
Speaker 2: Casey from Cherryville, I agree with Fitty. You going to read those texts, dumbass? If Clint Tickleman, what'd you call it? What'd you say?
00:38:38
Speaker 6: I asked Maggie, was you going to read those texts?
00:38:39
Speaker 2: Here's the thing, though.
00:38:40
Speaker 4: Okay, you agree with Fitty about her music. Would you have said it, sir, on a radio show less than 24 hours after her passing?
00:38:47
Speaker 2: I was asked a question.
00:38:48
Speaker 4: Was I not supposed to answer the question?
00:38:50
Speaker 2: No, you're supposed to. There's a better way to answer that question. Okay.
00:38:53
Speaker 4: But that would involve class, not ass. And that's not your specialty. Sir, you can go sit in the corner with Willie and John Sterling. Yeah, you pulled a palace.
00:39:03
Speaker 2: Dee Hancock.
00:39:04
Speaker 6: That's what Willie did to John Sterling.
00:39:07
Speaker 4: All right, let's get some fun stuff in here.
00:39:09
Speaker 2: I won this argument. No, you did not. There's no argument. There's no argument. You're a sad human. Finney's a moron. I mean, you're skipping over the good text. You are a sad human, Finney. All right, let's continue here, man. You know what? I'm not mad at you. I'm disappointed, Finney. That's all. Sorry, Dad. Just disappointed that my radio son went and did that bone. Behind our back. You know? All right. What else do we have? have here? Oh, we've got the video.
00:39:33
Speaker 4: The police video of Jed York getting arrested for responding to a prostitution ad in Ohio. Why did they have to put this video out? And he's wearing a Yankees t-shirt.
00:39:45
Speaker 2: Why? That is so funny. Why? You own your own pro sports franchise, and you're wearing one that's 3,000 miles away. I don't understand. this. Why am I yelling? I don't know. This is wrong, man. Another moment. Did someone say we're going to put a different team on? Another moment where a Yankee fan... represents the fan base the way many of them do. There are plenty of Yankee fans that could do that on the road, sir. And they probably have, all right?
00:40:12
Speaker 4: The best part of this story is, of course, he got pulled over in that Ohio trailer park, but the Ohio trailer park wanted to make sure it was known that he was not meeting the prostitute here. That stuff does not happen in our fine neighborhood. they were like trying to clear it up this dirt ball was not coming to our place for that just got pulled over here uh what about the backlash uh you think people are angry at fitty over his timing of his dolly parton comments how about the backlash yesterday bone when it was announced that espn will no longer have the ticker for scores up during their college football coverage Are you kidding me? Like, with as many games as are played on College Football Saturday, that is the number one day to.
00:40:58
Speaker 2: Have a ticker for people. Yeah, and I know that they don't put it up for specialized events like the Stanley Cup finals, NBA finals. There's not as much to– I mean, there's stuff going on, but not as much to care about. College Football Saturday, there's a million things going on. It's the busiest. You see the color flash, and you– oh, my God, there's a score in there. Mac, I have a theory on why ESPN chose to do this. Ready for this one? We know that they're always at war with Fox Sports and the other college football carriers. I think that ESPN, I have not read this, but this is my theory. I think ESPN, Mac, doesn't want to show the scores for, say, Ohio State, Penn State, the early games, Penn State, Michigan. They don't want to flash up that score. And if it's close, you're going to go jump to that game from, if you're a one-screen person, they want your eyeballs on the ESPN family network. That's definitely possible. I think they're trying to keep it into their own. That's definitely possible. The updates will come up on the screen, like studio updates, but I don't think they want to show you what's going on on the Fox games.
00:42:03
Speaker 4: So you don't go to one of the other games. They don't want you to jump to the big new kickoff game. It's possible because their explanation was to free up more on-screen real estate. That ticker's not large. Or for a cleaner presentation. It's like, no, it's fine. The presentation is fine.
00:42:20
Speaker 2: Did you see the meme yesterday? It was just what their new ticker is. It's all Pat McAfee news at the bottom.
00:42:25
Speaker 4: There you go. Put all that down there, man. What's McAfee's latest? Does McAfee have a number one hit single? Finney, you want to say McAfee's better country, more talented country artist than Dolly?
00:42:34
Speaker 2: Nope. Willie's now upset. Why? What happened? Don't compare Dolly Parton to John Sterling. She's more talented than he was yesterday.
00:42:42
Speaker 4: Oh, Willie's still going in on Starling.
00:42:46
Speaker 2: That's baseball, Susan.
00:42:47
Speaker 4: You know where we're going to send you for your Dolly slander and the timing of it?
00:42:51
Speaker 2: Hopefully home.
00:42:51
Speaker 4: We're going to send you to a Georgia elementary school, all right, where teacher Candy Sidney Browning says that she has a designated corner called the fart corner. where students can go if they need to pass gas so they don't do it in other parts of the classroom where everybody else is trying to learn.
00:43:12
Speaker 2: Finney, I sentence you.
00:43:14
Speaker 4: To a full school day in this Georgia elementary school's fart corner, sir.
00:43:19
Speaker 6: Better than spending four hours with you.
00:43:21
Speaker 2: Did you say, Mac, what the name of the corner was? So bitter, man. The gas station.
00:43:27
Speaker 5: Oh, okay.
00:43:27
Speaker 4: I thought it was just the fart corner. No, it's nicknamed the gas station.
00:43:30
Speaker 2: The gas station. Oh, man.
00:43:34
Speaker 4: Mac would never leave class anymore. He'd be in there for years. I would not be in my seat at all. I would be over in the corner. They would move my seat to the fart corner. That's what they would do with my gas issues. They would hold your graduation ceremony in the corner.
00:43:47
Speaker 2: Oh, God. Finney's bitter, isn't he? Finney upset, man. He needs to call his new girl, Jolene, today and see what's going on. Oh, God.
00:43:55
Speaker 4: Don't even let your girl know the way you talked about Dolly today.
00:43:58
Speaker 2: Finney's tired, Mac, from working 9 to 5 yesterday. We talked about it on the date.
00:44:03
Speaker 6: I delivered a hot take on the date.
00:44:05
Speaker 2: When we... First Serena Williams, now this. When we.
00:44:09
Speaker 2: When we come back, our first conversation with Quadzilla himself. A.J. Dillon joined us yesterday. You will hear that about him having a bigger role in the past game than we thought, his journey to Charlotte, his love of Charlotte, and much more. Don't miss Quadzilla. A.J. Dillon next. Sports Radio 92.7.
