Settle into the early morning hours of Saturday, November 23, 1963, at the corner of Jackson and Field Streets in downtown Dallas. Outside the exit of Simon's Garage, off-duty patrolman Harry Olsen and Carousel Club stripper Kathy Kay run into Jack Ruby, culminating in an intense, highly suspicious meeting in the dark that lasted for over an hour. In this episode, we reconstruct this crucial parking lot caucus and explore the conflicting testimonies of how it began—was it a chance street collision, or was Jack walking toward a specific, pre-planned destination?
We trace the dramatic aftermath of this meeting, detailing Olsen's rapid discharge from the Dallas Police Department just five weeks after the assassination, his immediate marriage to Kathy Kay, and their sudden move to California with no forwarding address. Under FBI questioning, Olsen claimed a total and convenient case of amnesia, swearing his intense grief over President Kennedy's death had completely erased his memory of that hour-long caucus with the future assassin. We also cover defense attorney Melvin Belli's frantic, public attempts to locate the vanished couple to testify during Jack's high-stakes murder trial, only to hit a complete brick wall.
Most chillingly, we examine Jack's bizarre, jailhouse psychiatric evaluations conducted by Dr. Lewis Jolyon "Jolly" West. Behind West's respectable academic title lay a secret history as a prominent contractor for the CIA's top-secret mind-control program, MK Ultra. We dissect how West extracted a garbled confession from Ruby in his cell—where an officer allegedly prompted him to kill Oswald and spare the state of Texas and the Kennedy family further grief—before West abruptly declared Ruby permanently insane. This diagnosis, delivered just weeks before Chief Justice Earl Warren was scheduled to take Ruby's testimony, effectively poisoned the well and ensured that anything Ruby babbled would be written off as the delusions of a madman.
Finally, we set the stage for Jack's sleepless Saturday morning, looking ahead to his sunrise mission with a Polaroid camera to photograph the controversial "Impeach Earl Warren" billboard and his mysterious phone calls to associates of Chicago mob boss Sam Giancana.
