Episode 102 - Keynote Speaker Author  Workplace and School Violence Expert Antoinette Tuff

🎙️ In this episode of The Jane Anderson Show, Jane is joined by the extraordinary Antoinette Tuff, an author, speaker, educator, and community leader whose work is grounded in resilience, compassion, courage, and purpose. Antoinette shares the deeply personal story behind the experience that changed her life 13 years ago, and how the challenges she faced beforehand helped prepare her to respond with empathy and calm in an extraordinary moment.

But this conversation goes far beyond the crisis itself. Jane and Antoinette explore the power of identity, self-awareness, influence without authority, and the importance of learning to truly know yourself. Antoinette shares how she spent more than a year “introducing herself to herself” after her marriage ended, rebuilding her confidence and learning who she was outside of her roles as a wife and mother.

For B2B consultants, advisors and thought leaders, there are powerful lessons about building influence, developing your own voice, sustaining a message over time, and creating work that continues to evolve while staying grounded in purpose.

Meet Antoinette Tuff

Antoinette Tuff is an author, speaker, educator, and community leader whose work focuses on resilience, purpose, compassion, and helping others navigate challenging moments with courage and confidence. Her experience during an armed crisis at the school where she worked became the foundation for a much broader body of work, including her Tuff Tactics framework, speaking, coaching, programs and community initiatives.

Today, Antoinette works with women, leaders, children and communities, using her experiences to help others build confidence, understand their identity and recognise their own capacity to create change.

The Power of Identity and Self-Awareness

Antoinette shares how the end of her 33-year marriage forced her to confront a question she had never really asked: who was she outside of her husband and children? She began a daily practice of introducing herself to herself, using the process to rebuild her confidence and create a new identity.

That practice became much more significant than she realised at the time. When she later faced an extraordinary crisis, she was able to draw on the identity, compassion and confidence she had been practising for more than a year.

Influence Without a Title

Jane explores how Antoinette was able to influence someone in an extreme situation despite having no formal authority, no weapon and no positional power. Antoinette explains how she focused on the person behind the behaviour, listening for what he actually needed rather than simply responding to what he was saying.

Her approach is captured in her Tuff Tactics of compassion, confidence and control, and the importance of knowing which one to bring into a situation and when.

Building a Thought Leadership Practice Around Your Message

Antoinette also shares how she has continued to develop the same core story and message over more than a decade without becoming tired of it. Rather than constantly creating something new, she has continued to elevate the message, adapting it into programs, memberships, coaching, children's books, workshops, and community initiatives.

Her approach demonstrates how a strong body of intellectual property can evolve while remaining anchored in a central purpose and message.

Finding Your Own Voice and Way of Working

Antoinette reflects on her early experiences as a speaker, admitting that she didn't initially understand what a keynote was or what she was supposed to do on stage. Over time, she learned that she didn't need to imitate other speakers. Her natural style is interactive, energetic, and highly experiential.

Her advice is simple: be yourself.

✨ Tune in to hear a powerful conversation about identity, courage, influence, self-awareness and building a body of work that continues to evolve while staying true to who you are.
