00:00:27.479 --> 00:00:31.799
Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of Between Sessions with Barry.
00:00:32.039 --> 00:00:35.560
Today we're joined by Kristen Murbich.
00:00:35.719 --> 00:00:45.239
Kristen is a mom of three, a therapist, a group practice owner at Outsmarting Anxiety and OCD, and a mindset coach for mothers in helping professions.
00:00:45.479 --> 00:00:55.479
When her one-year-old son was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma, a pediatric cancer, she pivoted her business while navigating that journey.
00:01:02.920 --> 00:01:05.399
Kristen, thank you so much for being here.
00:01:05.560 --> 00:01:06.359
Like, oh my gosh.
00:01:06.519 --> 00:01:11.239
I read your bio and I just couldn't even imagine what you went through.
00:01:11.319 --> 00:01:13.719
So I'm just glad you're here and talking about this.
00:01:14.200 --> 00:01:21.159
Amazing that you're spreading your journey with other people and it's helping therapists and and people that have gone through similar things.
00:01:21.239 --> 00:01:22.120
So thanks for being here.
00:01:22.599 --> 00:01:24.120
Thank you so much for having me, Kim.
00:01:24.599 --> 00:01:25.480
You're welcome.
00:01:25.719 --> 00:01:35.239
So you uh you specialize in OCD and anxiety, you run a group practice, you coach moms in helping professions, and you're a mama three.
00:01:35.879 --> 00:01:40.839
What drives you to keep building despite like all of this that you've been through?
00:01:42.599 --> 00:01:43.159
Yes.
00:01:43.719 --> 00:01:50.519
It's been quite a journey and the absolute hardest journey of my life.
00:01:50.759 --> 00:01:51.159
Oh my gosh.
00:01:51.479 --> 00:01:54.280
I actually was filling out an interview.
00:01:54.439 --> 00:01:59.319
Someone was interviewing me yesterday, but it was more of a a written interview.
00:01:59.640 --> 00:02:04.679
And they asked me if any part of my business building journey was hard.
00:02:04.839 --> 00:02:11.960
And I honestly just shared that it's never really been something about my business journey that's been hard.
00:02:12.039 --> 00:02:15.719
It's been everything behind the scenes in my personal life.
00:02:16.120 --> 00:02:39.159
And so, of course, navigating going, you know, being a therapist, navigating, growing my group practice, navigating another business, my coaching business on top of that, while I'm living out of a hospital, while my child is going through really painful treatments every single day, while my schedule is completely unpredictable.
00:02:39.320 --> 00:02:46.840
And ultimately at the end of his journey, he passed away, and he passed away from a treatment complication, not cancer itself.
00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:59.080
And so now, yeah, now I am navigating building my businesses from being a grooving mom, which of course is its own journey.
00:02:59.480 --> 00:02:59.960
Oh my gosh.
00:03:00.200 --> 00:03:03.400
I didn't even expect you to say that that it wasn't even from the cancer.
00:03:03.800 --> 00:03:04.120
Wow.
00:03:04.360 --> 00:03:05.320
Yeah, yeah.
00:03:05.480 --> 00:03:29.560
It's yeah, that's been honestly one of the hardest parts for me is is knowing that he he had a chance and you know, cancer treatments is really incredibly tough and they're outdated for children, and it's hard because a lot of research shies away from cancer research about kids, you know, just with ethics with a tiny body, all of those things.
00:03:29.719 --> 00:03:35.560
And so that actually brings me back to your question of why I I keep going.
00:03:36.040 --> 00:03:36.439
Yeah.
00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:40.360
You know, in the beginning, I I think I had a choice.
00:03:40.520 --> 00:03:51.400
So I actually the day before my son got diagnosed, he was in the AR, I had sent out an offer letter for my second therapist to be onboarded into my group.
00:03:52.040 --> 00:04:14.040
And at the time, I think, you know, my choices were close down the group practice, also close down the employment that I had for my therapists at the time, my team at the time, or find a way to pivot in fast, because I really had to go from seeing 20 plus clients a week every single week to seeing none.
00:04:14.360 --> 00:04:17.480
My schedule was incredibly unpredictable.
00:04:17.639 --> 00:04:22.120
There was never a promised time that I could make for my clients.
00:04:22.279 --> 00:04:25.079
So can I see you at, you know, next Tuesday at 10 a.m.?
00:04:25.319 --> 00:04:26.040
I have no idea.
00:04:26.199 --> 00:04:28.120
I don't know what we're gonna be doing then.
00:04:28.360 --> 00:04:31.000
And so it gave me my answer pretty quickly.
00:04:31.079 --> 00:04:34.120
I didn't, I don't think I ever really thought about it that much.
00:04:34.279 --> 00:04:40.600
I just knew that I was going to keep going and thank goodness that I did already start this group practice.
00:04:40.759 --> 00:04:45.160
And now it was just my job to build it because I could do that from a hospital room.
00:04:45.400 --> 00:04:52.360
I can't really be predictable for my therapy clients, but I can build from a hospital room.
00:04:52.600 --> 00:04:54.199
And so that's what I did.
00:04:54.360 --> 00:04:59.960
A large part of that just because it's honestly what helped me feel normal during that time.
00:05:00.120 --> 00:05:13.160
It's what gave me my me time, it's what helped me feel like I could take a step away from everything and feel like myself and come back and be really present for him and my other two children.
00:05:13.319 --> 00:05:14.759
Actually, I just had one at the time.
00:05:15.160 --> 00:05:18.920
One other child at the time I got pregnant with my third during cancer treatment.
00:05:19.160 --> 00:05:19.800
Oh my goodness.
00:05:20.280 --> 00:05:34.280
But yeah, and so with that being said, I just it was my normal, but it also helped me to bring my income back up because overnight I had lost a lot of money because I could no longer see one-to-one clients.
00:05:34.600 --> 00:05:47.800
And of course, when you are going through something like that, you have medical bills, you have bills from traveling for treatment, like you need that income the most that you ever had.
00:05:48.360 --> 00:05:53.160
And so, yeah, that was a big part of just knowing that I was going to stay the course.
00:05:53.319 --> 00:05:57.560
That combined with, I think it helped me a lot feel normal during that time.
00:05:57.800 --> 00:06:22.120
Yeah, and now I think it has a lot, like it's evolved in so many ways, and a big part of that is my son's name is Quinn, and it's about living for Quinny and this being a foundation for many other things that I want to do in his name and for other kids who are going through child cancer treatments for brave families, all of that.
00:06:22.439 --> 00:06:26.840
Wow, wow, and I mean that leads right into what I wanted to ask you about this.
00:06:27.079 --> 00:06:32.920
What has this experience taught you about yourself as a clinician, but then as an entrepreneur?
00:06:33.079 --> 00:06:38.840
Like, I mean, it's hard to think that there's like positive lessons out of going through something like this, but did you there is?
00:06:39.160 --> 00:06:39.480
Yeah.
00:06:39.639 --> 00:06:40.680
Can you tell us about it?
00:06:40.759 --> 00:06:44.280
Because I just admire your strength and tenacity really.
00:06:44.519 --> 00:06:44.840
Yeah.
00:06:45.480 --> 00:06:46.040
Thank you.
00:06:46.759 --> 00:06:51.800
I think perspective is my is my answer at the end of the day.
00:06:51.960 --> 00:06:53.400
It changes so much.
00:06:53.560 --> 00:07:03.800
And you know, even just in my conversations with my cancer mom friends, you know, that there's a ton of lessons that you would trade in an instant.
00:07:04.120 --> 00:07:09.400
I would give them all back if my son never got cancer and if he could be here today.
00:07:10.040 --> 00:07:32.439
And at the end of the day, because that is our reality, I would want so much for me to be able to carry out the perspective that I've gained from this because that is part of what drives me to want to continue to build, want to live for him, and want to just like continue to show up every single day.
00:07:32.759 --> 00:07:38.280
And so I think that the biggest lesson overall is time as a gift.
00:07:38.519 --> 00:07:45.639
And I think that every single day I try to ask myself, like, what are ways that I can feel most alive today?
00:07:45.960 --> 00:07:55.879
And sometimes that absolutely has to do with something more extravagant, like going hiking in Sedona, you know, and writing his name in the Red Rocks.
00:07:55.960 --> 00:08:06.759
And sometimes that is, you know, just a very average day, sending my kids to school so that they can go play with their friends, something that they couldn't do for so long because they were home with us to keep him safe.
00:08:07.000 --> 00:08:24.360
And that means that I get to go to work and you know have interviews like this and be on meetings with my moms who I coach and do therapy sessions and just make an impact in some sort of way and have real moments with real people.
00:08:24.840 --> 00:08:26.199
Yeah, totally.
00:08:26.920 --> 00:08:32.759
So when you were going through all that and you're at the hospital and you can't see your clients, how did you manage that?
00:08:32.840 --> 00:08:42.120
I'm just curious for somebody listening that might have, God forbid, a crisis come up, you know, and it's like, I, you know, I don't have maybe I haven't built a group practice or whatever.
00:08:42.199 --> 00:08:44.679
Like, how did you manage like your clients?
00:08:44.840 --> 00:08:46.840
Did you transition them to other therapists?
00:08:46.919 --> 00:08:48.840
Did you just say be patient with me?
00:08:49.159 --> 00:08:51.879
Like, how how did you manage that part of it?
00:08:52.199 --> 00:08:53.079
Yeah, absolutely.
00:08:53.319 --> 00:08:58.199
I'll give really logistical steps because I think that that would be most helpful here.
00:08:58.439 --> 00:08:58.679
Okay.
00:08:58.919 --> 00:09:05.159
So for the first two weeks when I was had no idea what was going on, everything was a blur.
00:09:05.399 --> 00:09:13.080
I basically didn't tell them anything, and I just canceled and I said, I'm have family emergency, I'm out for right now.
00:09:13.320 --> 00:09:21.000
Once I started to understand that this was not going anywhere anytime soon, I started to come up with a game plan.
00:09:21.080 --> 00:09:27.720
And ultimately what I did was write a letter that I sent out to each and every one of my clients.
00:09:28.039 --> 00:09:31.240
And in that letter, it gave them options.
00:09:31.480 --> 00:09:42.120
It gave them options to stay with me and kind of like I will update them every month for us to know, like, can I see you at all that month?
00:09:42.440 --> 00:09:56.279
One of these pieces where in the beginning, I think one of my options was not see me until my schedule's a little bit more predictable, and I will update you every month to let you know if I think I can be predictable.
00:09:56.519 --> 00:10:03.240
The second option being that I will let you know when I have an opening and you can take it or leave it.
00:10:03.480 --> 00:10:14.600
Another option being that I referred them out to one of my therapists within my group practice, another option being that I referred them out to someone else in our community outside of our group practice completely.
00:10:15.080 --> 00:10:22.279
With that being said, there were certain clients that I knew it wasn't ethically right for them to stay with me.
00:10:22.440 --> 00:10:24.919
I knew how consistent of care they really needed.
00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:28.360
And so for them, lovingly, I didn't give them a choice.
00:10:28.440 --> 00:10:30.039
I said, we need to refer you out.
00:10:30.200 --> 00:10:36.200
And for those clients in particular, it was really about who is the best therapist for this person.
00:10:36.519 --> 00:10:38.919
So I was more so matching them.
00:10:39.080 --> 00:10:45.000
And some of them I was suggesting therapists outside of my group practice because I knew they would be the best fit for them.
00:10:45.080 --> 00:10:51.560
And for others, it was handing them off to a therapist within my practice because I felt like they would be the best fit for them.
00:10:51.799 --> 00:10:52.360
Yeah.
00:10:52.680 --> 00:10:53.320
Wow.
00:10:53.639 --> 00:11:00.360
So how how long did this go on with him getting sick and then the treatments and then when he ultimately passed away?
00:11:00.519 --> 00:11:04.279
How long did that yeah, about 18 months?
00:11:04.519 --> 00:11:05.560
So wow.
00:11:05.879 --> 00:11:06.440
Gosh.
00:11:06.680 --> 00:11:07.799
Oh my gosh.
00:11:08.039 --> 00:11:08.600
Yeah.
00:11:08.919 --> 00:11:17.960
And then eventually, I guess, did most of the clients just decide to go to other providers, or is that eventually what happened, or did some of them hang around?
00:11:18.200 --> 00:11:19.399
I know I've got some new.
00:11:19.639 --> 00:11:24.440
I know definitely hang around forever, but it's I'm curious how that worked out for you.
00:11:24.759 --> 00:11:25.159
I know.
00:11:25.560 --> 00:11:33.240
You know, in the beginning, almost everyone was like, if I gave them an option, almost everyone was like, I'll stay, I'll wait.
00:11:33.320 --> 00:11:37.399
But no one really knew the severity of everything going on behind the scenes.
00:11:37.720 --> 00:11:45.399
I also didn't necessarily tell them outright like that my son has a very aggressive childhood cancer.
00:11:45.560 --> 00:11:50.039
I said that he has a medical, a severe medical diagnosis, something like that.
00:11:50.279 --> 00:12:04.039
And so in the beginning, most of my clients chose to stay with me, whether it was I would give them updates every month or basically they are willing to get in last second when I had availability.
00:12:04.360 --> 00:12:14.680
Over time, my caseload dwindled naturally, which I also was grateful for just because at the end of the day, even if I could see them, like I can't see all of them.
00:12:15.159 --> 00:12:21.159
And I wanted them to go on and find therapists who could be more consistent with them.
00:12:21.480 --> 00:12:22.120
Yeah.
00:12:22.519 --> 00:12:28.200
That being said, I mean, I had gone on a maternity leave in this in all of this 18 months.
00:12:28.279 --> 00:12:29.720
I had gotten pregnant with my third child.
00:12:29.879 --> 00:12:30.919
Oh my gosh, right.
00:12:31.080 --> 00:12:31.960
Oh yep.
00:12:32.200 --> 00:12:32.759
Oh my gosh.
00:12:33.000 --> 00:12:39.560
And so, yep, I got pregnant with my baby girl, and she was born in September.
00:12:39.720 --> 00:12:44.919
So I was also prepping them, the ones who did remain with me for maternity leave.
00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:46.440
Um my goodness.
00:12:46.759 --> 00:12:56.759
For context, that was my third maternity leave in four and a half years, plus this intermittent medical leave.
00:12:57.000 --> 00:13:02.919
So I have been on leave a lot with my clients just for the stage of life that I'm in right now.
00:13:03.159 --> 00:13:07.240
And so when my daughter was born, I had gone on a maternity leave.
00:13:07.399 --> 00:13:17.080
Everyone who was still with me at that point were either set up with one of my therapists in my group practice as a substitute, and some of them are still with those therapists.
00:13:17.320 --> 00:13:17.639
Wow.
00:13:17.879 --> 00:13:23.000
Whether or not they're a substitute at this point, or if that's just going to be their therapist moving forward, I don't quite know yet.
00:13:23.879 --> 00:13:27.639
And some of them are still my clients.
00:13:27.799 --> 00:13:34.680
So basically, I had prepped them for I think it was a five-month maternity leave.
00:13:35.000 --> 00:13:38.440
And thankfully, a lot of my clients have been with me for a while.
00:13:38.600 --> 00:13:44.200
Like I had been in private practice for quite some time and I was already in the building stage of my group practice.
00:13:44.360 --> 00:13:48.360
So I wasn't taking on a ton of new clients when all of this started.
00:13:48.600 --> 00:13:48.840
Wow.
00:13:49.000 --> 00:13:53.720
And so I knew for a lot of them it was okay for them to take clinical breaks.
00:13:53.879 --> 00:13:54.039
Yeah.
00:13:54.279 --> 00:13:56.120
And in fact, maybe it was good for some of them.
00:13:56.360 --> 00:14:05.080
And so that being said, while I was on maternity leave still, we had gotten the news that my son's cancer had come back and he relapsed.
00:14:05.240 --> 00:14:09.000
And so at that time, I did not have any plans to come back.
00:14:09.159 --> 00:14:11.399
I just didn't know when I would be able to.
00:14:11.639 --> 00:14:18.759
And all of my attention was focused on, you know, getting him traveled for the right places in the country for you know to the best of the best.
00:14:18.919 --> 00:14:21.960
A few months later, too sadly, he did pass away.
00:14:22.120 --> 00:14:25.000
And so since then, it's now been three months.
00:14:25.320 --> 00:14:30.440
And I am just like letting myself be in a state where I don't totally know.
00:14:30.600 --> 00:14:34.200
You know, I am seeing two therapy clients after this.
00:14:34.360 --> 00:14:36.840
They have texted me and asked me, do you have an opening?
00:14:37.000 --> 00:14:40.039
And you know, they don't think they know that he has passed yet.
00:14:40.200 --> 00:14:41.399
It may or may not come up.
00:14:41.560 --> 00:14:43.080
If they ask me, I'll tell them.
00:14:43.720 --> 00:14:50.279
But ultimately, in this state of I don't know what's next, and we'll take it day by day.
00:14:50.600 --> 00:14:50.919
Wow.
00:14:51.080 --> 00:14:51.960
Oh my gosh.
00:14:52.120 --> 00:14:54.919
I just I had no idea it had only been three months either.
00:14:55.159 --> 00:14:56.279
Holy cow.
00:14:56.519 --> 00:14:57.159
Yeah.
00:14:57.480 --> 00:14:58.680
Oh my goodness.
00:14:59.000 --> 00:15:06.279
So in all this, you're building a group, and then you've started the other the coaching program that you're doing.
00:15:06.360 --> 00:15:09.960
Is was that already in the works too, or is that something that's just evolved out of this?
00:15:10.120 --> 00:15:14.600
Like, I'm just I'm amazed that you're building, you know, and I guess I guess that's a good coping skill, right?
00:15:14.680 --> 00:15:22.360
As you were saying, like focusing on something, you know, that you could work on and not being client-dependent, but it's just it that's amazing to me.
00:15:22.519 --> 00:15:27.639
So, did you build the coaching program alongside the group practice, or how did that evolve for you?
00:15:27.960 --> 00:15:29.080
Yeah, yeah.
00:15:29.399 --> 00:15:39.320
So I had my Instagram account before my son got diagnosed, but I hadn't yet officially launched the business.
00:15:39.560 --> 00:15:42.680
And so I think it was four months into his treatment.
00:15:43.000 --> 00:15:47.240
I legally made it a business and I started to take on clients.
00:15:47.480 --> 00:15:49.560
It's it's a little bit more flexible, of course.
00:15:49.720 --> 00:15:56.200
You know, these are these are moms who are also therapists or and other helping professionals of sorts.
00:15:56.440 --> 00:16:01.639
And so if I had to reschedule last second, they would understand.
00:16:01.960 --> 00:16:12.840
And also there's like flexibility within how I can deliver what I am promising to them in ways that is a little bit harder to do with therapy clients, right?
00:16:12.919 --> 00:16:14.919
And there's ethically, it's just a little bit different.
00:16:15.080 --> 00:16:20.279
So, with that being said, it has also become a very much a passion.
00:16:20.519 --> 00:16:25.560
I understand complicated motherhood, and therefore I understand complicated business.
00:16:25.639 --> 00:16:37.960
And oftentimes that is what moms come to me for because as a really tangible example, I see so many business coaches or consultants talking about time blocks, for example.
00:16:38.360 --> 00:16:40.200
I couldn't do a time block, right?
00:16:40.360 --> 00:16:48.360
I had no control over knowing, you know, like, oh, I could set aside this amount of time every single Wednesday for, I don't know, content creation.
00:16:48.680 --> 00:16:50.200
That was never my reality.
00:16:50.279 --> 00:16:53.320
And so I understand that world really deeply.
00:16:53.560 --> 00:17:07.319
And so a lot of the moms who come to me are coming to me because the reality is, is I think a lot of times society, the world may think that a mom would stop at a time like this.
00:17:07.720 --> 00:17:15.480
And I know so, so many medical moms who have absolutely had to quit their job and they never went back.
00:17:15.960 --> 00:17:18.680
And it was the right decision for them and for their family.
00:17:18.919 --> 00:17:22.039
And sometimes people are absolutely forced to do that.
00:17:22.279 --> 00:17:34.759
And in other times, for me, it was I could continue to evolve how I was operating my business and pivot and change with the course of where things were at.
00:17:35.079 --> 00:17:56.519
And that being said, it was incredibly helpful, like I said, from like a normalcy standpoint for me, but also I'm incredibly grateful that in my stages of grief and it being so fresh, that I don't have to go back to seeing therapy clients until I'm ready in terms of like it being a really consistent thing in my week.
00:17:56.759 --> 00:18:01.480
And then not everybody has that level of flexibility or freedom.
00:18:01.880 --> 00:18:11.160
So that's been important to me to be able to help moms navigate it in ways where it completely aligns with their life and what they want and need for their family.
00:18:11.480 --> 00:18:13.480
Yeah, gosh, amazing.
00:18:13.799 --> 00:18:14.359
Wow.
00:18:15.400 --> 00:18:25.160
So I just think it like, you know, this is not does not compare at all, but sometimes I'll see things like come up on Instagram or something like, do you have your will for your business?
00:18:25.319 --> 00:18:27.480
Or like it's something where it happened tragically.
00:18:27.559 --> 00:18:31.000
Do you have a plan for who's gonna take over your business and manage the whole thing?
00:18:31.319 --> 00:18:32.200
Do you talk about that?
00:18:32.359 --> 00:18:34.359
Your Instagram is the resource mother, right?
00:18:34.519 --> 00:18:37.240
Is that the Instagram that focuses on this?
00:18:37.480 --> 00:18:38.279
The resource mother.
00:18:38.599 --> 00:18:43.880
Do you talk about strategies like that to maybe moms that are already a little bit overworked and a little bit frazzled?
00:18:44.120 --> 00:18:51.559
Like, how do you plan for you can't plan for a crisis or something like this happening, but are there strategies or like do you talk?
00:18:51.880 --> 00:18:56.279
I just don't even know because I feel like just hearing you talk, it brings up all this stuff for me too.
00:18:56.359 --> 00:18:57.400
It's like, am I prepared?
00:18:57.559 --> 00:19:00.599
If something tragic happened, I mean, what would happen to my business?
00:19:00.759 --> 00:19:02.519
It really makes me think about that stuff.
00:19:02.680 --> 00:19:05.319
So I just wonder do you do you talk about that?
00:19:05.400 --> 00:19:08.120
Do you have strategies, tips, suggestions, anything?
00:19:08.359 --> 00:19:08.599
Yeah.
00:19:08.839 --> 00:19:11.160
Now that totally yeah.
00:19:11.319 --> 00:19:14.200
I mean, at the time I was flying by the seat of my pants, honestly.
00:19:15.000 --> 00:19:17.640
Yeah, I I mean that's what I would be doing for sure.
00:19:17.880 --> 00:19:18.519
So yeah.
00:19:19.640 --> 00:19:21.559
I do talk about it.
00:19:21.720 --> 00:19:30.839
What's interesting that you bring up tips and strategies that go with it, because I think I could do a better job of giving people like a step-by-step kind of strategy.
00:19:31.079 --> 00:19:31.319
Yeah.
00:19:31.559 --> 00:19:47.000
I would say like the thing is is that so many crises are so individualized in terms of unpredictable, even just from something related to, you know, for example, with a medical diagnose, let's say my son was older when he got diagnosed.
00:19:47.079 --> 00:19:53.240
That would have looked very different because I would have been able to, let's say, just all right, you're gonna hang out in here for just an hour.
00:19:53.480 --> 00:19:59.319
Mom is gonna go find a spot in the hotel to do a meeting and most likely be able to keep it.
00:19:59.640 --> 00:20:01.960
But when I was with him, I was with him.
00:20:02.120 --> 00:20:03.720
He was one, two, and three.
00:20:03.799 --> 00:20:06.680
While being in a hospital, he's hooked up to lines everywhere.
00:20:06.759 --> 00:20:09.559
And so he absolutely needs me very close by, right?
00:20:09.640 --> 00:20:13.079
So even taking a phone call when I was in the room with him, I couldn't just step out.
00:20:13.319 --> 00:20:13.880
Yeah.
00:20:14.200 --> 00:20:18.120
So I think one of these pieces that is very individualized.
00:20:18.359 --> 00:20:26.279
But in reality, I would say that one of the things that I really tried to stand by is what we were talking about earlier.
00:20:26.440 --> 00:20:28.440
It was really hard for me to keep time blocks.
00:20:28.599 --> 00:20:39.000
You know, like I couldn't necessarily plan out my week in advance and know when I was going to be doing what, but I could do something called order of operations, is what I called it.
00:20:39.160 --> 00:20:45.240
And it was actually kind of just influenced by how you see things triaged in the hospital setting.
00:20:45.480 --> 00:20:51.880
And so for me, I always just knew what was going to be needle moving tasks that week.
00:20:51.960 --> 00:20:58.200
So that brings me to like I really wanted to not be distracted by things that were not important to me.
00:20:58.359 --> 00:21:03.799
And so I always try to live by I am either in a memory-making mode.
00:21:03.960 --> 00:21:24.200
So I'm present with my kids, present for myself, present for my partner, doing something fun, memorable, what have you, memory-making mode, nervous system regulation, or healing of sorts, whether it's your body, your mind, soul, whatever that might be, or needle moving tasks.
00:21:24.279 --> 00:21:33.640
And so if I wasn't in one of those two categories, and that would help me catch things with like if I were scrolling too much through Instagram, for example, I'm like, I'm not in one of these modes, stop that, right?
00:21:33.960 --> 00:21:45.720
And get back to you're either gonna like, let's go read a book with Quinn or my other son, my daughter, or let's do this thing in the business that's really going to move the needle forward.
00:21:45.960 --> 00:21:55.079
With that being said, then I kind of whatever was like a needle moving task within the business, I thought about what is my order of operations for the week?
00:21:55.240 --> 00:21:57.319
What is my order of operations for the month?
00:21:57.400 --> 00:22:00.120
And then what is my order of operations for the week?
00:22:00.359 --> 00:22:05.160
Because not every week am I going to be able to fulfill all of my needle moving tasks.
00:22:05.240 --> 00:22:10.920
I'm not gonna be able to check off every one of those boxes, especially when life was as unpredictable as it was.
00:22:11.079 --> 00:22:18.519
And so I had three huge buckets every single month in terms of knowing exactly what I want to be doing.
00:22:18.599 --> 00:22:31.480
So, for example, like one of them for me right now is hiring within my group practice, and so like anything that's related to hiring, because that is helping me move the Needle forward in growing our revenue, growing our team, growing my profit.
00:22:31.720 --> 00:22:32.680
That's one of them.
00:22:32.839 --> 00:22:33.160
Right.
00:22:33.319 --> 00:22:41.400
Another thing is organizing our systems, especially coming from when I was doing a lot from the hospital.
00:22:41.480 --> 00:23:02.359
And now I have a lot of time to organize what the structure of everything looks like and turn it into really accessible documents, tools, platforms for my team so that I can make their job as easy as possible and get ready to hire an admin, but also it helps with retention for my therapist too.
00:23:02.519 --> 00:23:14.039
Because at the end of the day, if everything is really easy and accessible to them and all they feel like they have to do is come in and do their job as a therapist, I think that helps with them really enjoying working for me.
00:23:14.200 --> 00:23:15.559
So that's another thing.
00:23:15.720 --> 00:23:19.880
And then the third thing would be doing something within my resource mother business.
00:23:19.960 --> 00:23:22.120
And right now that's recording a program that I have.
00:23:26.680 --> 00:23:27.000
Yeah.
00:23:27.160 --> 00:23:28.680
Oh my gosh, so smart.
00:23:28.839 --> 00:23:29.480
Yeah.
00:23:31.240 --> 00:23:32.759
Oh my gosh, you really did.
00:23:32.839 --> 00:23:35.000
I mean, I guess you really did figure it out on the fly.
00:23:35.079 --> 00:23:38.839
And the fact that you kind of turned it into a system is really cool.
00:23:39.160 --> 00:23:40.680
You know, kind of like it's a good thing.
00:23:40.839 --> 00:23:41.960
Yes, it helps me.
00:23:42.599 --> 00:23:43.319
I like it.
00:23:43.400 --> 00:23:45.559
It's really good, really helpful.
00:23:46.039 --> 00:23:52.759
So I'm sure that the therapist mothers that work with you and that sort of thing, they get a lot of really good strategies from you and that sort of thing.
00:23:53.319 --> 00:23:59.880
Do you see a barrier to growth with therapists like around mindset stuff when they're trying to manage all this?
00:23:59.960 --> 00:24:02.039
And how do you help with that?
00:24:02.359 --> 00:24:03.720
What's your work with that?
00:24:04.039 --> 00:24:06.759
Yeah, I love to go deep with my mom clients.
00:24:07.079 --> 00:24:12.519
I often like to think about it is not just the mindset work, but identity work.
00:24:12.839 --> 00:24:19.480
Meeting someone who's already within them that they like are meeting again, right?
00:24:19.960 --> 00:24:39.000
So oftentimes I think the person that is required doing the next thing in their business, whether that's scaling or opening up their private practice, scaling into a group practice, scaling into coaching offers, whatever it might be, you're pulling from someone who's already within you that you're scared to bring forward.
00:24:39.160 --> 00:24:50.680
Maybe that person is someone that part of you that got shamed a bit as a kid for maybe being too bold or too expressive, whatever it might be.
00:24:50.920 --> 00:24:59.640
And then the other part is like pulling from who you need to become in order to hold that level of success that you want to have for yourself.
00:24:59.880 --> 00:25:10.519
Because to me, if I dig deep enough with my clients, oftentimes they say they have a fear of failure, and that's their biggest fear.
00:25:10.839 --> 00:25:12.359
And they'll describe that to me.
00:25:12.680 --> 00:25:31.720
But what I come to find, and I know this has been true for myself, is it often is more of a fear of success because it requires them to evolve who they are and maybe really bring forth the parts of them that they are afraid to show.
00:25:32.200 --> 00:25:47.640
And perhaps that then makes them afraid of losing either like belonging to people in their personal life, to a group of therapists, to the therapist community, you know, out wide, whatever it might be.
00:25:47.960 --> 00:25:48.519
Yeah.
00:25:48.839 --> 00:25:49.240
Wow.
00:25:49.559 --> 00:25:50.680
So insightful.
00:25:51.240 --> 00:26:00.279
So for therapists who are moms and they're trying to build something, what's one thing that you would tell them that nobody else is really saying out there?
00:26:02.680 --> 00:26:13.559
I really believe that there are things within your home life, with your personal life, within motherhood, within yourself that is actually a business problem.
00:26:13.799 --> 00:26:19.960
So for example, right now I'm doing something called, like I named it the living experiment.
00:26:20.759 --> 00:26:26.519
But the way that I would describe that is treating my health like a 10-pay coaching container.
00:26:26.839 --> 00:26:36.759
And this summer, earlier this month, I had asked myself, what is my actual biggest barrier in this exact moment to meeting the goals that I have?
00:26:36.920 --> 00:26:50.440
Because ultimately, all of the goals that I have at this moment are also goals that will help me do big things in terms of making a big impact in the cancer community, the mental health community, and the motherhood community.
00:26:50.599 --> 00:26:55.559
Those are like my three buckets that I really want to be involved in.
00:26:55.880 --> 00:27:07.559
And treating my health like a 10-pag coaching container, I have an autoimmune disorder and I would do it again in a heartbeat, but I totally put it on the back burner while my son was going through cancer treatment.
00:27:07.799 --> 00:27:10.599
And it causes things like brain fog, for example.
00:27:10.839 --> 00:27:15.720
I get like fatigued more than I think that I would at my age.
00:27:15.880 --> 00:27:26.359
That being said, I, you know, getting my health back to a level where my brain fog is cleared, I have energy again, whatever that looks like for you.
00:27:26.599 --> 00:27:36.440
But I think that there's oftentimes health or something going on in your family life, or maybe it's that you don't have home systems and it feels really chaotic.
00:27:36.519 --> 00:27:43.240
So whenever you're not, let's say you're working from home one day, but you get really distracted because you feel like you're always cleaning.
00:27:43.480 --> 00:27:54.599
At the end of the day, there's often something that's a bottleneck that is totally separate from the business, or you at least think it's separate from the business, that is actually a business problem.
00:27:54.680 --> 00:28:12.200
And if we can also integrate it a bit more and see it as not separate but together, then I definitely think that that could help build your business faster and in a way that feels aligned and helps you feel excited about the process, not just the outcome of your business.
00:28:13.240 --> 00:28:13.799
Wow.
00:28:14.039 --> 00:28:15.400
Such good advice.
00:28:15.640 --> 00:28:16.039
Really.
00:28:16.279 --> 00:28:16.680
Thank you.
00:28:16.920 --> 00:28:17.160
Thank you.
00:28:18.599 --> 00:28:31.640
So taking a little turn, since this is the Barry's podcast, we always try to talk about like technology or AI and sort of where you see it with the resource mothers, helping resource mothers or not helping.
00:28:31.720 --> 00:28:37.559
You know, we just like to get advice or feedback or hear how you're using it in your own business and practice.
00:28:38.039 --> 00:28:41.960
So where are you with AI right now or technology in general?
00:28:42.279 --> 00:28:43.559
Yes, absolutely.
00:28:43.880 --> 00:28:50.200
I have mostly used chat and Claude in my business so far.
00:28:50.519 --> 00:28:50.920
Cool.
00:28:51.160 --> 00:28:53.720
I definitely use them both all of the time.
00:28:53.799 --> 00:29:08.120
I'm actually in a container right now that's helping me learn Claude code to build out like my AI strategists and build different skills within Claude social media marketer or social media manager.
00:29:08.279 --> 00:29:09.559
It'd be one skill.
00:29:09.799 --> 00:29:10.920
And now I'm forgetting.
00:29:11.079 --> 00:29:14.200
Oh, funnels, pages, and things like that would be another.
00:29:14.759 --> 00:29:34.279
And so for me, I definitely think and I encourage all my mom clients to do this, to get it trained in your business and to basically be an employee of your business, at least generally, but also like what I am learning a lot more recently is how to build out different AI agents.
00:29:34.359 --> 00:29:39.640
So just like with therapists, and if you're gonna give it general input, then it's gonna give you general output.
00:29:39.720 --> 00:29:44.279
And how can we like make each one very specific to what you're actually needing in that bucket?
00:29:44.440 --> 00:29:59.240
So, for example, with how do I show up as an Instagram therapist and I don't know what I'm doing with the social media piece, creating like a specific skill or AI agent for that part of your business so that you feel like it's actually giving you good input.
00:29:59.480 --> 00:29:59.880
Wow.
00:30:00.039 --> 00:30:01.319
Yeah, that's awesome.
00:30:01.640 --> 00:30:02.279
So good.
00:30:02.440 --> 00:30:03.160
I love it.
00:30:03.400 --> 00:30:03.799
Nice.
00:30:04.359 --> 00:30:06.440
So, how do people find you and work with you?
00:30:06.680 --> 00:30:09.160
This is mainly the audience for this is therapist.
00:30:09.400 --> 00:30:13.160
How do they find you and work with you if they'd like to learn more about what you're doing?
00:30:13.559 --> 00:30:14.519
Yeah, thank you.
00:30:14.759 --> 00:30:24.839
My group practice, outsparting anxiety and OCD, we treat kids through adults who basically are struggling primarily with anything anxiety or OCD related.
00:30:24.920 --> 00:30:33.319
That could be social anxiety, separation anxiety, panic disorder, phobia, agoraphobia, and anything OCD related.
00:30:33.400 --> 00:30:40.599
And we have different therapists for different age groups, so we can cover the lifespan for anything related to anxiety and OCD.
00:30:40.759 --> 00:30:43.319
And our website there is outsmarting OCD.
00:30:43.400 --> 00:30:44.599
It's where you can find us.
00:30:44.680 --> 00:30:47.880
Our emails are all listed there too, within that practice.
00:30:48.200 --> 00:30:54.359
And then for Resourced Mother, I am at Resourced Mother on Instagram.
00:30:54.759 --> 00:31:11.799
And that is definitely where you can find me, send me a DM, say hello, like if you have any questions about really any part of building a business, building a private practice, a group practice, a clinic with whatever it is, especially if you're like, I have a lot going on.
00:31:12.039 --> 00:31:14.279
And how do I do that?
00:31:14.519 --> 00:31:16.279
How do I do this at the same time?
00:31:16.519 --> 00:31:17.319
Yes, yes.
00:31:17.400 --> 00:31:22.920
I'd be so happy to chat in DMs and we can answer any questions that you have.
00:31:23.240 --> 00:31:23.799
Amazing.
00:31:23.960 --> 00:31:25.319
Thank you for being here today.
00:31:25.559 --> 00:31:26.279
Thank you.
00:31:26.440 --> 00:31:28.120
Thank you so much for having me.
00:31:28.440 --> 00:31:29.079
You're welcome.
00:31:29.240 --> 00:31:34.519
Such good, helpful information and resources and insights with everything that you've been through in your life.
00:31:34.680 --> 00:31:35.400
Oh my gosh.
00:31:35.559 --> 00:31:37.880
Thanks for bringing it to the rest of the world.
00:31:38.200 --> 00:31:38.680
Thank you.
00:31:38.759 --> 00:31:39.880
I appreciate you.
