00:00:00.310 --> 00:00:05.250
This is West Michigan's Morning News. Good morning, 737. Today
2
00:00:06.030 --> 00:00:11.960
marks the 30-year anniversary of Fox News. In 1996, Fox
3
00:00:12.019 --> 00:00:16.359
News goes on the air. And America started watching. You watched.
4
00:00:16.640 --> 00:00:17.539
Through breaking news.
5
00:00:17.839 --> 00:00:19.519
And elections. Through tragedy.
6
00:00:19.760 --> 00:00:22.000
And triumph. All across the country.
7
00:00:22.280 --> 00:00:23.539
You made us part of your days.
8
00:00:24.160 --> 00:00:24.620
Your nights.
9
00:00:25.370 --> 00:00:28.769
Most importantly, you made us part of your lives.
10
00:00:29.070 --> 00:00:33.530
And 30 years later, America is still watching. For that,
11
00:00:33.950 --> 00:00:37.880
we thank you. You know, by now we are an
12
00:00:37.909 --> 00:00:42.640
affiliate and talk regularly with reporters and guests from Fox News,
13
00:00:42.700 --> 00:00:46.460
including Tanya J. Powers with Fox News Radio. Happy birthday
14
00:00:46.659 --> 00:00:47.759
in New York this morning.
15
00:00:48.880 --> 00:00:51.380
Thank you. They're rolling out the cake any time now.
16
00:00:51.460 --> 00:00:52.000
I can't wait.
17
00:00:53.340 --> 00:00:56.539
So talk to us a little bit about its inception.
18
00:00:56.579 --> 00:00:58.539
How long have you been with the company? I need
19
00:00:58.560 --> 00:01:00.640
to link you to Fox News.
20
00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:06.900
I started here in September of 2013, so almost half
21
00:01:06.959 --> 00:01:12.849
the time it's been around. I think my cohort, Jared Halpern,
22
00:01:12.890 --> 00:01:15.329
has been here a little bit more than half of
23
00:01:15.390 --> 00:01:17.469
the time. I think he's been here for 16 years.
24
00:01:17.650 --> 00:01:20.510
Most of us reporters have been here for more than
25
00:01:20.549 --> 00:01:20.950
a decade.
26
00:01:21.599 --> 00:01:23.959
So how did it all start, Tanya?
27
00:01:26.109 --> 00:01:29.150
Well, the whole gist of the thing was something to
28
00:01:29.189 --> 00:01:33.579
go up against CNN at the time. It launched on
29
00:01:33.640 --> 00:01:38.659
October 7th, 1996 on cable and satellite systems. It was
30
00:01:38.819 --> 00:01:41.340
the 24-hour news channel. Like I said at the time,
31
00:01:41.390 --> 00:01:44.049
CNN pretty much had, I guess, cornered the market there.
32
00:01:45.269 --> 00:01:50.170
They got there first. And, you know, Rupert Murdoch and
33
00:01:50.269 --> 00:01:54.159
Roger Ailes decided to create something to go up against them.
34
00:01:54.519 --> 00:01:59.799
And that was Fox News. And it took about 11
35
00:01:59.799 --> 00:02:03.260
years for Fox Business Network to be launched. But, I mean,
36
00:02:03.859 --> 00:02:06.819
you know, the Fox brands, there are so many of
37
00:02:06.900 --> 00:02:11.099
them now. It's expanded into, like I said, not only
38
00:02:11.159 --> 00:02:14.469
the business network. It's hard to remember that that wasn't
39
00:02:14.490 --> 00:02:18.259
a thing at the same time the Fox News Channel was. But,
40
00:02:18.439 --> 00:02:20.289
you know, of course we have our audio division now,
41
00:02:20.349 --> 00:02:23.909
which is our radio newscast, our reports from folks like
42
00:02:23.949 --> 00:02:26.729
me and Jared Halpern and Jeff Manasso and Colonel Scott.
43
00:02:27.560 --> 00:02:30.180
as well as our podcasts. We also have the streaming
44
00:02:30.219 --> 00:02:33.669
service Fox Nation. The folks right across the hall from
45
00:02:33.729 --> 00:02:37.729
us here at 1211 Avenue of the Americas in Midtown Manhattan.
46
00:02:38.259 --> 00:02:41.659
Fox Weather, we see them all the time in the hallways.
47
00:02:42.560 --> 00:02:46.379
Fox News Digital, we have a whole digital department. You know,
48
00:02:46.460 --> 00:02:48.800
all of the shows, obviously. And we even have Fox Books,
49
00:02:49.340 --> 00:02:52.780
a book imprint. So it has obviously come a long
50
00:02:52.840 --> 00:02:54.680
way from where it started 30 years ago today.
51
00:02:54.840 --> 00:02:58.000
And important to point out that you're still there, right?
52
00:02:58.099 --> 00:03:02.810
Because there's so much new technology that competes with this stuff.
53
00:03:03.030 --> 00:03:05.870
And in the last year, we've said goodbye to an
54
00:03:05.949 --> 00:03:10.889
entire network that was there long before CBS News Radio,
55
00:03:11.289 --> 00:03:14.719
something we also used to subscribe to, is now out
56
00:03:14.740 --> 00:03:16.560
of business, and you're still rolling.
57
00:03:18.120 --> 00:03:21.680
Yeah, yeah, that was heartbreaking, you know, to learn that
58
00:03:22.020 --> 00:03:24.560
CBS Radio was not going to be a thing anymore.
59
00:03:24.580 --> 00:03:27.610
You know, I think most of us here knew people
60
00:03:27.750 --> 00:03:32.530
over there that, you know, It is hard to get
61
00:03:32.550 --> 00:03:34.939
your head around the amount of technology and the new
62
00:03:35.289 --> 00:03:40.180
way things have expanded. We also have a SiriusXM channel
63
00:03:40.340 --> 00:03:46.199
as well. Fox has headlines on our SiriusXM channel 115.
64
00:03:46.199 --> 00:03:53.520
That's also a 24-hour news situation. It's really something. When
65
00:03:53.560 --> 00:03:57.659
I first started working here in 2013, we just had
66
00:03:57.680 --> 00:04:02.270
our little Fox radio department that was much, much smaller
67
00:04:02.310 --> 00:04:05.569
at the time that, you know, did the newscast for
68
00:04:05.650 --> 00:04:09.000
our affiliate stations like y'all. We, you know, obviously went
69
00:04:09.030 --> 00:04:12.000
out and covered things and filed reports and did our,
70
00:04:12.099 --> 00:04:14.580
you know, affiliate chats with you guys in the mornings.
71
00:04:15.139 --> 00:04:19.160
And then it really took off and expanded. And we
72
00:04:19.180 --> 00:04:22.519
got our satellite folks and kind of doubled our newsroom.
73
00:04:23.519 --> 00:04:25.829
And we went from a piece of our floor to,
74
00:04:26.420 --> 00:04:31.540
to half of it, which for a building in Midtown Manhattan,
75
00:04:31.579 --> 00:04:33.740
that is no small feat because it's not a small building.
76
00:04:33.759 --> 00:04:37.189
You know, we have our talk division. We have, you know,
77
00:04:37.259 --> 00:04:41.230
tons of studios now where we record podcasts and, you know,
78
00:04:41.269 --> 00:04:43.189
a lot of staff that backs all that up, too.
79
00:04:43.230 --> 00:04:44.889
So there's a lot of people behind the scenes. For
80
00:04:44.990 --> 00:04:46.670
all of the people that you hear on the air,
81
00:04:46.790 --> 00:04:48.910
like me and my fellow reporters, as well as our
82
00:04:48.970 --> 00:04:52.069
anchors and Fox News channel folks, there are hundreds more
83
00:04:52.689 --> 00:04:54.790
behind the scenes that make the whole thing go.
84
00:04:54.870 --> 00:04:58.399
That's Tanya J. Powers with Fox News Radio in New York.
85
00:04:58.480 --> 00:04:59.699
Thank you for your time today.
86
00:05:00.860 --> 00:05:01.139
Thank you.
