00:01:37.680What is up everyone and welcome bacy to PsychBytes with CCS. My name is Josh and I am back today with another Quick Skills episode, and today's episode is going to be on study tips with ADHD. So good study skills are important for everyone, particularly when we are in college, but good study skills are particularly important when we don't have as much structure as maybe we were used to when we were in grade school.
00:01:37.680 -->
00:01:40.319So, what's the benefit of having a good study skill?
00:01:40.319 -->
00:01:45.840Well, that's going to, you know, reduce test anxiety because I feel more prepared and ready for an exam.
00:01:45.840 -->
00:01:52.159My focus is going to be sharper and I will have increased motivation as a consequence.
00:01:52.159 -->
00:02:00.879So again, while this is true for everyone, this is especially true for those of us who struggle with ADHD.
00:02:00.879 -->
00:02:04.400So let's talk about what some of these tips are.
00:02:04.400 -->
00:02:07.280And the first thing is keeping a routine.
00:02:07.280 -->
00:02:11.919And to keep a routine, I am studying at the same time every day.
00:02:11.919 -->
00:02:14.879It allows me to be consistent.
00:02:14.879 -->
00:02:18.719Experiment with what time works best and then build it into your day.
00:02:18.719 -->
00:02:24.000So try it out at X time on Monday, X time on Tuesday, X time on Wednesday.
00:02:24.000 -->
00:02:32.879Go back and review which one felt the most productive, which one was easier to tap into, and then turn that into your daily study time.
00:02:32.879 -->
00:02:39.520Make sure you set reminders for yourself on your phone so that you don't forget that, oh, I need to be doing this right now.
00:02:39.520 -->
00:02:43.280Another thing you can do is create a dedicated study space.
00:02:43.280 -->
00:02:46.240Choose an area that is free of distractions, right?
00:02:46.240 -->
00:03:00.000So if I'm studying in my room where I have my gaming console, my TV, my comfortable bed, a bunch of other creature comforts that are going to pull me away from wanting to sit down and focus on the thing that's in front of me.
00:03:00.000 -->
00:03:02.479That's probably not the best space for me.
00:03:02.479 -->
00:03:11.280So creating a dedicated space for yourself could help your brain more quickly shift into study mode and get it away from that distractable place.
00:03:11.280 -->
00:03:15.599Study in short, focused sessions.
00:03:15.599 -->
00:03:18.479Many people learn best in short sessions.
00:03:18.479 -->
00:03:21.039So it's it's you're making it more palatable, right?
00:03:21.039 -->
00:03:24.719If you have an entire plate of food in front of you, how are you gonna eat that?
00:03:24.719 -->
00:03:26.080One bite at a time.
00:03:26.080 -->
00:03:29.039You can't take on the entire thing at once, it just won't work.
00:03:29.039 -->
00:03:39.039So if you approach studying in the same way that you eat a meal, one bite at a time, it's gonna make it far easier to get through the content.
00:03:39.039 -->
00:03:48.800So make sure that you are trying to work from 25 to 45 minutes and taking a brief break before the next course.
00:03:48.800 -->
00:03:52.879Next up, let's set clear and doable goals.
00:03:52.879 -->
00:03:58.560Before you begin, decide on exactly what you'd like to accomplish for that study session.
00:03:58.560 -->
00:04:02.000Break big tasks into small parts, keeping it manageable.
00:04:02.000 -->
00:04:05.919For example, if you have to write a paper, use one session to find your sources.
00:04:05.919 -->
00:04:08.080The next one is going to be writing an outline.
00:04:08.080 -->
00:04:12.960After that, the next session is going to be writing up your draft, so on and so on.
00:04:12.960 -->
00:04:17.279The big thing is here is making sure you know what you're doing going into it.
00:04:17.279 -->
00:04:23.199If you just have a vague idea of I'm going to study for an hour, what are you actually going to study in that hour?
00:04:23.199 -->
00:04:27.040The more specific you are, the more successful you will be.
00:04:27.040 -->
00:04:30.959Another thing you can do is quiz yourself frequently.
00:04:30.959 -->
00:04:36.959Instead of just rereading your notes, check and see if you've actually understood what you wrote down.
00:04:36.959 -->
00:04:46.639So to do this, use flashcards, um, write down the facts, summarize a chapter in a few sentences, teach it back to your roommate or a friend, tell them what you learned.
00:04:46.639 -->
00:04:49.279This will help set it in your brain more effectively.
00:04:49.279 -->
00:04:56.240And finally, the last skill that I want to throw your way is move your body during the breaks that you take in between study sessions.
00:04:56.240 -->
00:05:01.360When you take a study break, try stretching, walking, getting up, and getting some fresh air.
00:05:01.360 -->
00:05:08.240Even just a few minutes of movement can really help reset your attention, improve your focus when you return to studying.
00:05:08.240 -->
00:05:22.959What you don't want to do is get on your phone, turn on the TV, you know, start a phone call with a friend, because that is going to serve to distract and detract from what I'm actually trying to do, which is get back into my study session.
00:05:22.959 -->
00:05:25.360So that's all I have for you today.
00:05:25.360 -->
00:05:28.879Keep your eyes peeled for future episodes.
00:05:28.879 -->
00:05:34.079And until the next one, I'm Josh, and this has been PsychBytes with CCS.
