Why are Christians so easily offended, and how should followers of Jesus respond when someone hurts them? The gospel changes how Christians handle conflict by directing our attention away from defending ourselves and toward the forgiveness, grace, and love demonstrated by Jesus.
In this episode of the Fridays at First podcast, Nick and Brett discuss why conflict happens even in healthy churches, how Christians commonly mishandle offenses, and why avoiding conflict is not always the same as pursuing peace. They also consider when an offense should be addressed privately, when it may be wiser to overlook it, and how Christians can forgive without allowing hurt to become bitterness or gossip.
You’ll learn:
- Why Christians should expect conflict in a fallen world
- How Jesus responded to betrayal, rejection, and suffering
- Why trying to win or vindicate ourselves can worsen conflict
- How to decide whether an offense should be addressed or overlooked
- Why Matthew 18 begins with a private conversation
- How prayer helps us forgive those who have hurt us
- Why forgiveness does not always require restoring the same level of closeness
- How to bring anger to Jesus before responding to another person
Scripture discussed includes Matthew 5:38–48, Matthew 18, John 3:30, John 16:33, 1 Corinthians 13, Ephesians 4:26, James 1:19, Hebrews 4:15, and 1 Peter 5:7.
