00:00:00.800 --> 00:00:08.480
Welcome to the Execution Insights Podcast, where stories from the leadership journey become lessons for the road ahead.
00:00:08.720 --> 00:00:24.399
I'm Jim Hewling, and today I want to tell you about the day I made it just 40 yards up a hill I climbed hundreds of times, and why that moment changed the way I think about strength and resilience and what it means to begin again.
00:00:24.559 --> 00:00:26.559
I'm really glad you're here.
00:00:32.640 --> 00:00:34.320
40 yards.
00:00:34.799 --> 00:00:36.880
That's how far I made it.
00:00:37.200 --> 00:00:42.719
After seven weeks of pneumonia, I finally felt strong enough to try something really simple.
00:00:42.880 --> 00:00:49.280
Just walk up the hill that begins at my driveway and winds upward for nearly a mile.
00:00:49.520 --> 00:00:56.159
Now I've walked that hill hundreds of times, but on that morning, I made it about 40 yards.
00:00:56.399 --> 00:00:57.439
That's right.
00:00:57.759 --> 00:00:58.960
40 yards.
00:00:59.119 --> 00:01:01.039
And my heart was pounding.
00:01:01.200 --> 00:01:02.719
You know, my legs felt weak.
00:01:02.799 --> 00:01:08.959
And for the first time in my life, I saw a version of myself I'd really never met before.
00:01:09.280 --> 00:01:15.040
You see, I had assumed that once I was well, I'd just pick right up where I left off.
00:01:15.840 --> 00:01:17.760
But I was really wrong.
00:01:18.079 --> 00:01:22.719
And just for context, I've never really considered myself an athlete.
00:01:22.879 --> 00:01:28.239
I mean, there were always people who were stronger and faster and more gifted than I was.
00:01:28.719 --> 00:01:37.040
But for most of my adult life, being strong had become one of the ways, well, I guess you could say, I understood myself.
00:01:37.280 --> 00:01:46.480
You know, I spent 12 years in CrossFit and I survived four Murph workouts, and even at one point in my life achieved a 400-pound deadlift.
00:01:47.040 --> 00:01:55.200
And while I was proud of all those things, I think something else was kind of happening that I really didn't understand at the time.
00:01:55.760 --> 00:02:01.920
Strength wasn't just something I valued, it was becoming evidence.
00:02:03.120 --> 00:02:11.599
Evidence that I could endure, that I could push through, that whatever life put in front of me, somehow I could find a way.
00:02:12.080 --> 00:02:18.719
And I want to say that that mindset served me incredibly well for an entire season of my life.
00:02:19.120 --> 00:02:24.240
I'd really spent a lifetime accumulating evidence that I was strong.
00:02:25.120 --> 00:02:34.879
And now, 40 yards up that hill, well, none of that evidence seemed to matter because I couldn't go any farther.
00:02:35.120 --> 00:02:42.879
And what I remember most about that morning wasn't really the physical exhaustion, it was the confusion.
00:02:43.520 --> 00:02:47.360
Because somewhere underneath all of it was a question.
00:02:47.599 --> 00:02:50.000
Well, I guess I just wasn't prepared for.
00:02:50.319 --> 00:02:56.960
The question was: if I'm not the person who can always keep going, then who am I now?
00:02:58.560 --> 00:03:03.439
Now, maybe you've had a moment like this, I don't know, but it probably wasn't on a hill.
00:03:03.840 --> 00:03:13.520
You know, maybe it was an illness, or it was a job change, or it was a relationship that ended, or some other unexpected event in your family.
00:03:13.840 --> 00:03:25.919
Maybe you reached for something sometimes, something you'd always been able to count on in yourself, and you discovered, like I did, that at least for that moment, it just wasn't there.
00:03:27.360 --> 00:03:33.840
Now, my experience has been that sooner or later, life has a way of doing just that for all of us.
00:03:34.080 --> 00:03:41.199
No matter how carefully we prepare, we don't really get to choose the size of the next challenge.
00:03:41.520 --> 00:03:49.439
And standing there that morning right on that hill, I was beginning to understand something I couldn't possibly have understood the day before.
00:03:49.680 --> 00:03:57.120
Now, maybe I spent too much of my life trying to become strong in the hope that maybe nothing could actually knock me down.
00:03:57.439 --> 00:04:01.199
Because eventually, something always will.
00:04:01.759 --> 00:04:04.719
And in fact, that's not even the real question.
00:04:04.960 --> 00:04:11.120
The real question is not being knocked down, it's what happens next.
00:04:12.080 --> 00:04:26.720
Because that morning I stood there far longer than I should have, just looking up that hill and trying to understand well, really, whether I was disappointed or I was deciding.
00:04:27.279 --> 00:04:30.480
Now, today I think I already knew the answer.
00:04:30.720 --> 00:04:35.439
I mean, for sure, something in my life had been lost, and I was grieving it.
00:04:35.759 --> 00:04:39.759
But the question wasn't really whether I could recover what I'd lost.
00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:41.600
I knew I could do that.
00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:44.240
The question was harder.
00:04:44.959 --> 00:04:47.600
I wasn't asking whether I could do it.
00:04:47.839 --> 00:04:52.800
I was asking myself, is it worth beginning again?
00:04:53.759 --> 00:04:58.160
And I want to say really honestly that the question surprised me.
00:04:58.480 --> 00:05:04.720
Because for most of my life, probably like a lot of you, if something mattered to me, I just found a way.
00:05:05.759 --> 00:05:09.279
I had to work harder or stay with it or figure it out.
00:05:09.600 --> 00:05:12.639
But standing there that morning, I was tired.
00:05:12.879 --> 00:05:14.240
I was disappointed.
00:05:14.399 --> 00:05:21.680
And I was beginning to realize that getting back to where I had been was going to require a lot more than I'd imagined.
00:05:21.920 --> 00:05:25.279
So I just stood there for an extra moment.
00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:30.480
And then, a little bit to my own surprise, I started walking.
00:05:31.040 --> 00:05:34.079
Not very far, just farther.
00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:37.759
And eventually I made it to the top.
00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:47.920
Now, right here, I wish I could tell you that there was some great surge of confidence in that moment, that it was a rocky moment on the top of the steps.
00:05:48.079 --> 00:05:52.480
You know, I didn't get to the top and throw my arms in the air and think, I'm back.
00:05:53.439 --> 00:05:55.920
Because the truth was, I wasn't back.
00:05:56.160 --> 00:05:58.879
I wasn't even close to being back.
00:05:59.199 --> 00:06:05.920
I was just a guy who had made it a little farther than he thought he could on an unexpected day.
00:06:06.319 --> 00:06:09.519
But something about that moment mattered.
00:06:09.680 --> 00:06:10.959
I could feel it.
00:06:11.199 --> 00:06:14.959
And so the next day I went back to the same hill.
00:06:15.199 --> 00:06:18.000
And then I went back again and again.
00:06:18.399 --> 00:06:20.800
And some days I felt pretty good.
00:06:21.040 --> 00:06:23.120
And some days I didn't.
00:06:23.360 --> 00:06:30.240
There were days when I went farther than I had before, but there were also days when the same distance felt twice as hard.
00:06:30.560 --> 00:06:32.319
But I kept coming back.
00:06:33.199 --> 00:06:46.079
And somewhere in that process, I began to understand something about strength that I don't think I had ever really understood, at least in this way before.
00:06:46.800 --> 00:06:50.959
You see, we put a lot of emphasis on being strong.
00:06:51.439 --> 00:06:52.879
I certainly did.
00:06:53.199 --> 00:07:04.240
And we want to be strong enough to handle whatever comes our way, to take the pressure, to carry the responsibility, to withstand whatever life throws at us.
00:07:04.560 --> 00:07:08.800
And I still to this day think that's a really noble idea.
00:07:09.279 --> 00:07:13.199
Because honestly, none of us gets to choose what's coming, do we?
00:07:13.680 --> 00:07:26.399
And you and I know that we can prepare and we can take care of ourselves and we can do everything we know how to do to become stronger, but life can still hand you something bigger than anything you'd prepared for.
00:07:26.560 --> 00:07:39.439
And these days, I wonder if all along we've been putting too much emphasis on being strong, when maybe the more important thing is learning what to do after it happens.
00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:46.160
What I learned in this moment of my life is that strength is the ability to withstand a blow.
00:07:46.720 --> 00:07:54.720
But resilience is the ability to gather yourself, stand back up, and start moving again.
00:07:55.199 --> 00:07:58.959
And I really love that phrase, gather yourself.
00:07:59.519 --> 00:08:05.199
Because sometimes I think we make resilience sound too heroic.
00:08:05.920 --> 00:08:11.600
As if we get knocked down and automatically we just spring back up, like the movies.
00:08:13.040 --> 00:08:15.360
But that's not how it really works.
00:08:15.839 --> 00:08:19.519
Sometimes we get knocked down, we just need a minute.
00:08:20.160 --> 00:08:22.480
Sometimes we need a lot of minutes.
00:08:23.040 --> 00:08:24.959
We need to sit with what happened.
00:08:25.120 --> 00:08:38.559
We, in some ways, need to grieve what was lost, and we need to figure out where we are now so that even when we meet a new version of ourselves, we know how to handle what we weren't expecting.
00:08:39.360 --> 00:08:42.799
I hope you'll hear me when I say that's not weakness.
00:08:43.200 --> 00:08:46.639
That's preparing to rise again.
00:08:47.120 --> 00:08:50.480
Because surviving a defeat is actually pretty common.
00:08:50.639 --> 00:08:52.799
I mean, people do it all the time, right?
00:08:52.960 --> 00:08:57.120
We've all survived things that we once thought we couldn't.
00:08:57.519 --> 00:09:02.639
But rising again and moving forward, that's a unique skill.
00:09:03.039 --> 00:09:08.000
Because resilience actually begins in the moment when you decide.
00:09:08.480 --> 00:09:14.639
Hey, this may have knocked me down, but it doesn't get to decide where I go from here.
00:09:15.360 --> 00:09:22.000
And that thought, well, that brings me to something I couldn't have known that morning, standing on that hill.
00:09:22.720 --> 00:09:25.840
Because at the time I thought the goal was pretty obvious.
00:09:26.080 --> 00:09:36.320
I just wanted to get back to the strength I had had eight or nine weeks ago, to the workouts I used to be able to do, to feeling, in my words, like myself again.
00:09:36.639 --> 00:09:41.840
But as the weeks went by, I know something started to change.
00:09:42.399 --> 00:09:47.279
I started to realize that maybe getting back wasn't actually the point.
00:09:48.080 --> 00:09:56.000
You see, what I know now is that I had defined myself, at least in part, by what I could do.
00:09:56.399 --> 00:10:00.879
And probably even more in the course of my life by what I could achieve.
00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:02.720
And there's nothing wrong with that.
00:10:02.799 --> 00:10:07.600
There's nothing wrong with achieving, and there's nothing wrong with striving for things that really matter.
00:10:07.919 --> 00:10:12.720
That mindset was really important to me for an entire season of my life.
00:10:12.960 --> 00:10:14.159
I loved setting goals.
00:10:14.320 --> 00:10:15.919
I wrote books about setting goals.
00:10:16.080 --> 00:10:18.080
I loved accomplishing difficult things.
00:10:18.240 --> 00:10:19.919
And a part of me still does.
00:10:20.080 --> 00:10:22.320
I'm grateful for all of it.
00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:29.840
But standing on that hill, none of those accomplishments could do much for me in that moment.
00:10:30.320 --> 00:10:31.840
I mean, really, think about it.
00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:35.279
You can't hand your resume to a hill.
00:10:35.600 --> 00:10:39.360
You can't ask the hill to review your LinkedIn profile.
00:10:39.600 --> 00:10:41.360
You know, you you just can.
00:10:41.519 --> 00:10:42.480
You know why?
00:10:42.720 --> 00:10:44.799
Because the hill doesn't care.
00:10:45.360 --> 00:10:50.240
And strangely enough, after just a little while, neither did I.
00:10:51.120 --> 00:10:54.799
The things I'd achieved, I don't want to say they'd become unimportant.
00:10:55.039 --> 00:10:56.399
That wouldn't be true.
00:10:56.639 --> 00:10:59.519
But they'd simply become less important.
00:11:00.799 --> 00:11:05.039
Because I had stopped asking, how do I get back to who I was?
00:11:05.600 --> 00:11:10.240
And I had started asking, who can I still become?
00:11:11.360 --> 00:11:13.600
Now that's a very different question.
00:11:13.759 --> 00:11:17.840
And I have to tell you, for me, it's a much more exciting one.
00:11:18.399 --> 00:11:26.080
Because really, there's not much energy in spending the rest of your life looking in the rearview mirror to something you used to be able to do, right?
00:11:26.480 --> 00:11:28.879
You can appreciate where you've been for sure.
00:11:29.039 --> 00:11:30.240
You can be grateful for it.
00:11:30.320 --> 00:11:35.039
You can honor that memory, and hopefully you can learn from it, of course.
00:11:35.360 --> 00:11:38.639
But what you can't do is live there.
00:11:40.080 --> 00:11:41.759
Because here's what I discovered.
00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:47.600
I don't want to spend whatever time I have left trying to recreate an earlier version of myself.
00:11:47.919 --> 00:11:50.399
I'm grateful for the version of me that got me here.
00:11:50.480 --> 00:11:51.840
Yeah, of course.
00:11:52.080 --> 00:11:56.399
But I am way more interested in the person I haven't met yet.
00:11:56.639 --> 00:12:00.320
You know, the person I could still become one day.
00:12:00.960 --> 00:12:09.120
Just the other day, I heard Matthew McConaughey, the famous actor, tell a story about being asked, who's your hero?
00:12:09.919 --> 00:12:20.559
And I know, and you may have heard this story, that his answer surprised a lot of people because he said in a very public forum, my hero is me 10 years from now.
00:12:22.000 --> 00:12:26.080
And I remember thinking, oh, I get that.
00:12:26.639 --> 00:12:29.360
Because he wasn't trying to become somebody else.
00:12:29.600 --> 00:12:34.000
He wasn't chasing someone else's life or someone else's definition of success.
00:12:34.159 --> 00:12:39.039
He was chasing a version of himself that was still out in front of him.
00:12:39.519 --> 00:12:42.240
And I want to tell you, I just love that.
00:12:42.799 --> 00:12:49.360
Because there's something about having a vision of who you could still become that pulls you forward.
00:12:49.600 --> 00:12:55.120
Not back to who you were, forward to who you haven't yet become.
00:12:55.440 --> 00:13:00.159
And I want you to know that I see versions of this all the time in my coaching work.
00:13:00.559 --> 00:13:05.360
Now, I work with extraordinarily capable people who've accomplished a lot.
00:13:05.679 --> 00:13:10.000
But no matter what, something always happens.
00:13:10.480 --> 00:13:18.240
They don't get the role they thought was theirs, or their business starts to struggle, or sometimes they make a mistake that they can't undo.
00:13:18.720 --> 00:13:23.840
You know, a career that had always seemed to be moving upward suddenly doesn't.
00:13:24.240 --> 00:13:30.080
And sometimes the first conclusion is: well, maybe I'm not who I thought I was.
00:13:30.799 --> 00:13:33.440
And that's where I love the job of coaching.
00:13:33.679 --> 00:13:37.679
Because in that moment, I tell them about this hill.
00:13:38.320 --> 00:13:47.840
I tell them about how sometimes becoming requires us to let go of some of the evidence we've been carrying around about who we were.
00:13:49.120 --> 00:13:59.919
And there's a period in between those two identities when you're no longer quite sure who you were, and you don't yet really know who you're becoming.
00:14:00.320 --> 00:14:04.240
And if you're in that space, you know that's an uncomfortable place.
00:14:04.879 --> 00:14:15.519
But because I've been through it, I also know that it can be a sacred place because it's filled with possibility and with hope.
00:14:16.240 --> 00:14:21.200
Now that morning, I certainly didn't know what was ahead of me, and I couldn't have predicted all of this.
00:14:21.519 --> 00:14:30.240
But slowly, and I guess you'd say quietly, the uncertainty that had frightened me started to feel different.
00:14:31.039 --> 00:14:34.320
It began to feel like a possibility.
00:14:35.120 --> 00:14:39.919
And maybe that's one of the greatest gifts of beginning again.
00:14:40.799 --> 00:14:44.960
You don't have to know exactly where you're going to end up there.
00:14:45.279 --> 00:14:52.080
You just need enough determination and you need enough faith to take the next step.
00:14:52.399 --> 00:14:54.559
And that's pretty much what I did.
00:14:55.039 --> 00:14:56.799
There wasn't a grand plan.
00:14:56.960 --> 00:15:03.120
I didn't have a multi-tab spreadsheet with a Gantt chart and lots of roadmaps to guide the way.
00:15:03.759 --> 00:15:07.200
I didn't even have an elaborate comeback strategy.
00:15:07.840 --> 00:15:12.799
I mean, honestly, I just walked every day.
00:15:13.120 --> 00:15:18.559
And if you've ever tried to come back from something, you know how frustrating it can be.
00:15:18.799 --> 00:15:22.320
I mean, we all want progress to go in a straight line, don't we?
00:15:22.559 --> 00:15:23.600
I sure do.
00:15:23.840 --> 00:15:28.080
We want every day to be a little better than yesterday, for sure.
00:15:28.720 --> 00:15:31.360
But the problem is it doesn't always work that way.
00:15:31.600 --> 00:15:36.879
I mean, even in my case, I'd have a really good day and I would think, okay, here we go.
00:15:37.840 --> 00:15:39.919
I'm finally coming back.
00:15:40.480 --> 00:15:43.519
And then the very next day would be awful, right?
00:15:43.840 --> 00:15:45.759
Hard, gruesome.
00:15:46.320 --> 00:15:52.799
And at first, that inconsistency bothered me because, well, I was still measuring progress the old way.
00:15:52.960 --> 00:15:54.720
You know, how far did I go today?
00:15:54.879 --> 00:15:55.840
How fast did I go?
00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:56.639
How strong?
00:15:56.799 --> 00:15:58.320
What milestone did I reach?
00:15:58.559 --> 00:16:00.240
Am I all the way back yet?
00:16:00.480 --> 00:16:02.159
All those kinds of questions.
00:16:02.639 --> 00:16:06.320
But along the way, I want you to know I stopped doing that.
00:16:06.639 --> 00:16:10.480
I stopped measuring my progress by how far I'd gone.
00:16:10.799 --> 00:16:17.679
And I started measuring my progress by how faithfully I came back the next day.
00:16:18.399 --> 00:16:24.559
Now that shift in measurement, that changed everything about my life.
00:16:25.120 --> 00:16:29.360
Because showing up was something I could absolutely control.
00:16:30.320 --> 00:16:34.639
And I think that's one of the things we misunderstand about resilience.
00:16:34.960 --> 00:16:40.559
When you're actually living it, well, honestly, it doesn't feel very impressive, right?
00:16:40.720 --> 00:16:41.440
Look at me.
00:16:41.600 --> 00:16:45.120
I was just getting out of bed and going up the hill, right?
00:16:45.279 --> 00:16:48.080
So most of the time it feels pretty ordinary.
00:16:48.399 --> 00:16:55.519
Maybe for you it's making a phone call that you've been holding off on, or it's having a conversation that you're truly avoiding.
00:16:55.679 --> 00:17:00.000
Maybe it's going back to work or asking someone for help.
00:17:00.480 --> 00:17:04.079
Or maybe it's as simple as just trying one more time.
00:17:04.960 --> 00:17:10.400
Now, in my case, I was putting on my shoes, walking back up a hill.
00:17:10.640 --> 00:17:15.599
And you know there's nothing particularly heroic about that, right?
00:17:16.160 --> 00:17:20.880
But I'm not sure resilience is supposed to be heroic.
00:17:22.000 --> 00:17:28.000
You see, today, I think resilience is supposed to be faithful.
00:17:29.519 --> 00:17:37.599
And slowly, maybe even imperceptibly, everything in my world began to change.
00:17:38.319 --> 00:17:40.319
Yes, the hill got easier.
00:17:40.559 --> 00:17:42.319
Yes, I started going farther.
00:17:42.400 --> 00:17:42.640
Yes.
00:17:42.799 --> 00:17:44.960
Eventually I started running again.
00:17:45.119 --> 00:17:56.400
And these days, in fact, this very day, I headed up that same hill, and now I'm either running up it or I'm walking wearing a very heavy-weighted vest.
00:17:56.720 --> 00:17:57.839
But you know what?
00:17:58.160 --> 00:18:01.039
Some mornings I still make it easily to the top.
00:18:01.279 --> 00:18:04.000
And other mornings, it's a grind.
00:18:04.480 --> 00:18:10.640
But what I know for sure is that I've stopped thinking about the hill.
00:18:10.960 --> 00:18:13.279
Now I notice something else.
00:18:13.519 --> 00:18:15.200
Today I showed up.
00:18:15.359 --> 00:18:17.119
Today I did what I could.
00:18:17.359 --> 00:18:20.559
Today I gave it all the energy and effort I had within me.
00:18:20.640 --> 00:18:22.960
And strangely enough, you know what?
00:18:23.279 --> 00:18:24.640
That's enough.
00:18:25.359 --> 00:18:29.839
And maybe that's a good place for me to leave this message with you.
00:18:30.319 --> 00:18:37.839
Because if there's one thing every one of us can count on, it's that somewhere along the way, life is going to knock us down.
00:18:38.480 --> 00:18:45.359
But when it does, remember, the goal was never to become so strong that nothing could take us down.
00:18:45.519 --> 00:18:47.359
In fact, it's not even possible.
00:18:48.079 --> 00:18:56.400
The greater skill is learning how to gather ourselves, stand again, and move forward.
00:18:57.119 --> 00:19:13.359
So if you're standing at your own 40 yards right now, I mean, if if something has changed or something's been lost, or the or the person you've always counted on doesn't feel quite as familiar as they once did, I won't tell you that it doesn't matter, because it does matter.
00:19:13.599 --> 00:19:17.599
And I won't tell you that getting back up will be easy.
00:19:17.839 --> 00:19:19.279
It's usually not.
00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:30.960
But when that quiet question finally comes, the same question that came to me standing on that hill, is it worth beginning again?
00:19:31.359 --> 00:19:33.279
I hope you'll remember this.
00:19:33.599 --> 00:19:39.359
You don't have to know where the next step will lead, and you don't have to get back to who you used to be.
00:19:39.680 --> 00:19:40.960
Because you know what?
00:19:41.440 --> 00:19:44.240
There's someone else waiting for you.
00:19:44.480 --> 00:19:52.000
Like Matthew McConaughey said, there's someone you haven't met yet, and it's you, the you you're going to become.
00:19:52.319 --> 00:20:02.400
So for today, all I really want you to know is when you come to that moment and you answer that question, it's worth it.
00:20:05.440 --> 00:20:07.599
Thanks for spending this time with me.
00:20:07.759 --> 00:20:16.400
I hope something from today's message stays with you, and even more helps you lead and live with greater insight, with greater passion.
