WEBVTT
00:00:00.017 -->
00:00:03.257Hi, this is Aurora from the Educating All Learners Alliance,
00:00:03.257 -->
00:00:07.427and today, you're listening to highlights from Bringing Computer Science to
00:00:07.427 -->
00:00:10.470Students Experiencing Homelessness with Code in Motion.
00:00:11.124 -->
00:00:14.926In June of 2026, EALA teamed up with the folks behind Code in Motion,
00:00:15.228 -->
00:00:19.994a program that brought computer science education to the students and adults in Skid Row, LA.
00:00:20.464 -->
00:00:24.226The following is an excerpt from that webinar, and to listen to the full presentation,
00:00:24.504 -->
00:00:27.825head on over to the Educating All Learners Alliance YouTube channel.
00:00:28.115 -->
00:00:29.508So a little bit of background.
00:00:30.275 -->
00:00:35.151This group came together during the EALA Community of Action in May 2025.
00:00:35.610 -->
00:00:38.258And I've spoken a lot about the EALA Community of Action.
00:00:40.144 -->
00:00:44.117It's our annual in-person convening where we bring together,
00:00:46.217 -->
00:00:50.057an uncommon group of educators, leaders, and allies.
00:00:50.886 -->
00:00:54.317We come together, we identify a problem, we propose a solution,
00:00:54.624 -->
00:00:58.990and then we pitch an idea, we pitch a project for actual funding.
00:00:59.361 -->
00:01:05.677So during the May 2025 convening, this group came together comprised of Coach
00:01:05.677 -->
00:01:07.412Ron, Kelly, and Heather.
00:01:07.859 -->
00:01:11.131They came together, they came up with this idea for Code in Motion.
00:01:11.561 -->
00:01:16.147They pitched it in our dolphin tank, like a shark tank, but it's nicer,
00:01:16.147 -->
00:01:17.392so we call it a dolphin tank.
00:01:18.797 -->
00:01:24.217They were granted funds based on community participatory grant funding.
00:01:24.217 -->
00:01:26.328So this was voted on by the community.
00:01:27.272 -->
00:01:34.688It's been a privilege of mine to advise and ensure that this project goes smoothly
00:01:34.688 -->
00:01:38.868from a logistics point of view, but the folks doing the hard work are the folks
00:01:38.868 -->
00:01:40.718on the panel today that I just introduced.
00:01:40.718 -->
00:01:46.128So I'd like to pass it to, I believe I have Heather up first.
00:01:46.128 -->
00:01:51.538If you can give us, Heather, just talk us through the origin story of Coded
00:01:51.538 -->
00:01:56.502Motion. You know, how did this team come together and what problems were you trying to address?
00:01:57.236 -->
00:02:02.028Thank you, Aurora. It originally started with Coach Ron and I at the convening.
00:02:02.488 -->
00:02:07.548We were both focused on community engagement and really understanding how that
00:02:07.548 -->
00:02:10.513works in his community and how it works in our community.
00:02:10.861 -->
00:02:15.388He was really focused on workforce development and supporting people that are
00:02:15.388 -->
00:02:16.728going through housing instability.
00:02:17.028 -->
00:02:21.488And obviously, Boot Up is all about supporting pathways for equitable computer
00:02:21.488 -->
00:02:24.167science education at the K-8 level.
00:02:24.765 -->
00:02:28.638So we kind of went, it took several rounds for us to really figure out how we
00:02:28.638 -->
00:02:30.957could blend those two together.
00:02:31.311 -->
00:02:35.737And then Kelly came in as well with Terc and computational thinking and really.
00:02:36.707 -->
00:02:41.411Kept narrowing it down until we decided on creating a project where we would
00:02:41.411 -->
00:02:44.569bring computer science education to Skid Row.
00:02:44.894 -->
00:02:48.601And Coach really was adamant about making sure that the community was,
00:02:49.041 -->
00:02:53.593you know, involved in every step of the process, which is where we have our coaches.
00:02:54.006 -->
00:02:58.041That instead of bringing in teachers from outside of the community,
00:02:58.041 -->
00:03:03.597we build the community up itself and taught teachers within the community.
00:03:03.893 -->
00:03:08.621So Timothy and Ta are two of the coaches that have been in that training program
00:03:08.621 -->
00:03:10.542with us and are now teachers themselves.
00:03:10.983 -->
00:03:14.507So it's been a beautiful collaboration. Thank you so much for that,
00:03:14.646 -->
00:03:20.009Heather. It's been, like I said, really cool to see these three organizations come together.
00:03:20.545 -->
00:03:24.321So on this next slide, we're highlighting Zoombinis. So I'm going to pass it
00:03:24.321 -->
00:03:29.201to Kelly to dig a little bit deeper into the content, right?
00:03:29.921 -->
00:03:34.971What are some of the aspects of the computer science education that you're doing?
00:03:34.971 -->
00:03:36.426You mentioned computational thinking.
00:03:37.083 -->
00:03:38.581So, Kelly, tell us a little bit about that.
00:03:39.351 -->
00:03:43.703What makes this program unique or what really makes this program successful? Right.
00:03:44.978 -->
00:03:48.847Well, let's see. We're three different groups, three different organizations
00:03:48.847 -->
00:03:51.526who all came into one place at the same time.
00:03:52.535 -->
00:03:59.051Coach Ron is obviously bringing the people in the space, and we'll get to more of his story in a bit.
00:03:59.347 -->
00:04:04.189Heather and her wonderful organization Boot Up, they're bringing the Scratch,
00:04:04.514 -->
00:04:09.327which is a block coding program, materials and resources and all their great
00:04:09.327 -->
00:04:11.305PD they do with teachers.
00:04:11.741 -->
00:04:17.487Terc is bringing not only our Zumbini's logic puzzle digital games,
00:04:17.487 -->
00:04:19.867but also all the unplugged activities.
00:04:19.867 -->
00:04:26.037So we really like that balance of on-screen work time and also some unplugged
00:04:26.037 -->
00:04:29.471activities that complement and support all the coding work.
00:04:30.080 -->
00:04:35.647And I think one of the most important things we try to remember when we're thinking
00:04:35.647 -->
00:04:38.607about this as coding and computer science,
00:04:39.175 -->
00:04:43.227that in addition to introducing students and adults to computer science,
00:04:43.587 -->
00:04:48.852we are training and encouraging thinking skills, not just coding skills.
00:04:49.166 -->
00:04:52.657So yes, they're coding, they're learning introductory block coding,
00:04:52.657 -->
00:04:58.256but they're really learning how to be great thinkers, which is important, whether or not you're.
00:04:58.883 -->
00:05:03.827Coding for a job or trying to walk out the door in the morning wearing the right
00:05:03.827 -->
00:05:04.887clothes for the right weather.
00:05:05.508 -->
00:05:08.627Which leads us to workforce development, right?
00:05:08.627 -->
00:05:12.207What's so unique about this program, when I have Coach Ron speak to this,
00:05:12.207 -->
00:05:19.217is that it's not just the children who are learning and we're not importing
00:05:19.217 -->
00:05:20.662teachers from somewhere else.
00:05:21.045 -->
00:05:24.606We're training and working with folks right in the community.
00:05:24.937 -->
00:05:26.533So Coach Ron, I'm going to pass it to you.
00:05:26.905 -->
00:05:28.367Just tell us more about the program,
00:05:28.947 -->
00:05:33.578from the workforce side and how your organization, FunZone, I don't know.
00:05:34.533 -->
00:05:38.403You know, kind of really brings it all together. Hey, once again,
00:05:38.403 -->
00:05:42.503thank you, Aurora, for hosting us. Thank the team for being here.
00:05:42.503 -->
00:05:46.184Thanks to everybody out there in this public space.
00:05:46.882 -->
00:05:51.023You know, workforce development is very dear to my heart because I understand
00:05:51.023 -->
00:05:56.344that, you know, every man and woman would like to have a job.
00:05:57.254 -->
00:06:04.143And so when I look at how opportunities come into skid row, community.
00:06:04.903 -->
00:06:08.903It's the homeless capital of the United States of America. You have thousands
00:06:08.903 -->
00:06:11.096of veterans that's on the streets.
00:06:11.485 -->
00:06:14.846You have women, kids. You have thousands of men.
00:06:15.212 -->
00:06:21.295And it's like, to me, they're all able to buy. And so why not give them an opportunity
00:06:21.615 -->
00:06:23.437to earn their way to housing?
00:06:24.059 -->
00:06:27.204And that's my whole concept. That's my whole vision.
00:06:27.604 -->
00:06:33.560And if you're homeless, I give you opportunities. You earn your way to housing. then we're reducing,
00:06:34.535 -->
00:06:39.783homelessness. And so I believe that individuals should have that opportunity.
00:06:41.072 -->
00:06:46.970They shouldn't be pandered or be exploited. And that's what happens in Skid Row.
00:06:47.115 -->
00:06:51.277I've been there for 20 years and exploitation is rampant.
00:06:51.965 -->
00:06:57.162So when this opportunity was brought to myself, I says, hey,
00:06:57.162 -->
00:07:02.385you know, And I always say this, I always say, I'm always in a good position
00:07:02.646 -->
00:07:05.809to receive gifts, to receive opportunities.
00:07:06.431 -->
00:07:10.355But at this point, I need to play it forward. So I just don't want it for me.
00:07:10.546 -->
00:07:11.783I want it for the community.
00:07:12.398 -->
00:07:17.792When people say, Coach, here go $40,000, here go $50,000, here go $30,000 to
00:07:17.792 -->
00:07:20.995implement this initiative. I said, no, it's not for me.
00:07:21.778 -->
00:07:25.972You know, let it be for organization so we can build capacity,
00:07:25.972 -->
00:07:32.290so we can demonstrate that the need can be met if the opportunity is presented.
00:07:32.783 -->
00:07:36.012And that's where the coaching come in. And that's where I'm really so,
00:07:36.752 -->
00:07:39.892you know, excited about Heather and Kelly and Aurora.
00:07:39.892 -->
00:07:43.392It's like, you know, just to have these opportunities to come together,
00:07:43.392 -->
00:07:47.692to have a planning, strategic think tank to say, you know what,
00:07:48.092 -->
00:07:51.487we can implement this. even though it's underfunded.
00:07:52.085 -->
00:07:55.440And that's something we communicated to the community.
00:07:55.910 -->
00:08:01.392Look, Skid Row, it's underfunded, but we can demonstrate if the opportunity
00:08:01.392 -->
00:08:04.582is presented, we will take advantage of it.
00:08:04.913 -->
00:08:11.072And that's what we've done. We have 15 coaches who went through our certification process.
00:08:11.878 -->
00:08:16.138They get their certificates. They are actually coaches for COVID in motion.
00:08:16.862 -->
00:08:20.271Now, when I say workforce, that means you got to go to work.
00:08:20.271 -->
00:08:24.373So we give the coaches opportunity. Remember, it's all no barrier.
00:08:25.104 -->
00:08:29.171And they come, they perform. They all tell me, coach, thank you.
00:08:29.171 -->
00:08:31.246They thank Heather. They thank Kelly.
00:08:31.873 -->
00:08:34.561They really, really, really, really, really, really, really,
00:08:34.561 -->
00:08:36.842truly enjoy the training.
00:08:37.457 -->
00:08:41.121That's what they like the most. It's like, we love, we want to work with the
00:08:41.121 -->
00:08:42.661kids, but it's the training.
00:08:42.661 -->
00:08:47.801It's really understanding what coding is about, the responsibilities that they
00:08:47.801 -->
00:08:52.556are receiving, and the opportunity to exercise that.
00:08:53.288 -->
00:08:57.995And that's what I enjoy the most, because the coaches are really compassionate.
00:08:58.419 -->
00:09:05.090They really have lived experience. And when it comes to mentoring and leadership,
00:09:05.689 -->
00:09:12.171this is with kids that are suffering, that are unstable, that are coming from
00:09:12.171 -->
00:09:16.155broken homes, that are lacking financial support.
00:09:17.166 -->
00:09:21.030Opportunities, this is where they get their motivation from.
00:09:21.234 -->
00:09:25.976People who look like them, who live in their communities, who are compassionate
00:09:25.976 -->
00:09:27.259about seeing them through.
00:09:27.805 -->
00:09:30.870And that's what workforce development is about at Code in Motion.
00:09:31.375 -->
00:09:38.945It's making sure all our coaches, our lived experience, understand that compassion,
00:09:39.896 -->
00:09:42.822and love is our only approach.
00:09:43.008 -->
00:09:47.586I wanted to really dig in here and introduce, we have two of the community coaches
00:09:47.586 -->
00:09:49.363that were able to join us today.
00:09:50.101 -->
00:09:53.283I'm so excited to hear more from Ta and Timothy.
00:09:53.614 -->
00:09:58.616So I'll start with Ta. Timothy, I'll cue you in next, but let's just get started
00:09:58.616 -->
00:10:02.857by just tell us about how you got involved with Code in Motion,
00:10:03.216 -->
00:10:05.216what the program means to you, and,
00:10:05.996 -->
00:10:08.796what's the impact that this program has had on you.
00:10:08.796 -->
00:10:13.184So, Todd, tell us a little bit about your story and how you got involved.
00:10:13.705 -->
00:10:18.804Okay, how I got involved, been a long time, comrade of coach.
00:10:19.461 -->
00:10:23.706And he came up on me and said, man, I got this new program about coding.
00:10:23.706 -->
00:10:24.988We're going to be teaching the youth.
00:10:25.489 -->
00:10:29.988I'm like, coach, I'm all for that. You know, we got to teach our youth.
00:10:30.406 -->
00:10:35.786We got to teach our youth our culture and our narrative. So he told me the day
00:10:35.786 -->
00:10:37.629I showed up, I met Heather.
00:10:38.696 -->
00:10:42.993Met Kelly, and it was great. I fell in love with it.
00:10:44.062 -->
00:10:47.968That's how I got to get in with coding.
00:10:48.588 -->
00:10:53.069And your other question was, what do it mean for me? What does it mean? Yeah.
00:10:54.508 -->
00:11:02.150It means a lot. I would say this, being that this year is the second international
00:11:02.469 -->
00:11:04.582decade of African descent.
00:11:04.954 -->
00:11:11.494I think it's coming at the right time that, you know, and then we coach getting
00:11:11.494 -->
00:11:13.939us, the leaders from the community.
00:11:14.444 -->
00:11:19.206So, we're coaching our culture and our narrative.
00:11:19.746 -->
00:11:26.660And also, we're teaching something that could change the world.
00:11:27.136 -->
00:11:30.644I would like to look at it like this, that we're teaching these young youth
00:11:30.644 -->
00:11:34.364and adults, and I want to be that one who,
00:11:34.840 -->
00:11:41.444inspire, that spark in that young student or that middle adult that make them
00:11:41.444 -->
00:11:45.052think differently and create this new thing that's going to change the world.
00:11:46.024 -->
00:11:50.924And I'll be happy. I'll be happy. You know, I coached that one right there,
00:11:50.924 -->
00:11:55.764you know, and I'll be happy with that. So I do want to leave a legacy and an
00:11:55.764 -->
00:11:59.568image of what we are doing. And I think this is a great...
00:12:00.473 -->
00:12:06.917Opportunity for it to happen. And I appreciate Coach and Heather and Kelly for coming together.
00:12:07.966 -->
00:12:14.026And you as well, Aurora. You're the quarterback in it. You're throwing the passes.
00:12:14.026 -->
00:12:17.790And we're, I guess, we're the receivers.
00:12:18.898 -->
00:12:23.036And these are the team captains. I like to say, I'm the Rodman.
00:12:23.036 -->
00:12:25.946You guys are Pippen and Jordan. There you go.
00:12:26.466 -->
00:12:31.966I set you up. You guys do it, though. about so you've got it i'm the rodman i'm the rodman.
00:12:33.091 -->
00:12:38.516You said it's up so you know it is great i have so much i will be sitting here
00:12:38.516 -->
00:12:41.387talking forever about the scenarios
00:12:41.616 -->
00:12:46.865anything else okay you say when i started and what i love about it,
00:12:47.476 -->
00:12:50.386and i want to continue i already do yeah.
00:12:52.006 -->
00:12:56.256Thank you for that we're going to talk more about your like more specific experiences
00:12:56.256 -->
00:12:57.819but thank you for that overview and that,
00:12:58.457 -->
00:13:01.926you know, this, like a ripple in the pond, right?
00:13:01.926 -->
00:13:06.526You know, this one small thing we're doing, you know, can hopefully spread out,
00:13:07.150 -->
00:13:10.286you know, try to find future funding or just spread the word.
00:13:10.286 -->
00:13:13.273Even people attending this webinar today or watching the recording back,
00:13:13.855 -->
00:13:18.576you know, spread the word about this work that we're doing because it has such
00:13:18.576 -->
00:13:24.226a great impact. So let's hear from Timothy. Tell us a little bit about you, how you got involved.
00:13:25.126 -->
00:13:28.743What does this program mean to you? What have you gotten out of it or.
00:13:30.350 -->
00:13:33.987All right. Well, thank you for allowing me to be here, number one.
00:13:33.987 -->
00:13:36.057Peace and blessings to everyone that's here.
00:13:36.900 -->
00:13:42.527Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am an individual with street-lived
00:13:42.527 -->
00:13:44.137experience. Let's put it like that.
00:13:44.282 -->
00:13:48.131And, you know, it was a blessing for me to be able to do this.
00:13:48.369 -->
00:13:54.815I found out about it when I moved into my first apartment here at the Eumaeus.
00:13:55.024 -->
00:13:59.967They had this little thing going on where, you know, you can train to do coding
00:13:59.967 -->
00:14:03.397motion. I didn't know what it was at that present moment, but I had nothing
00:14:03.397 -->
00:14:05.784else better to do. So I wanted to learn more about it.
00:14:06.783 -->
00:14:10.242I went there for the first day and I got hooked ever since then,
00:14:10.481 -->
00:14:12.507you know, because it's right up my alley.
00:14:13.353 -->
00:14:17.852You know, I love giving back to my community because like at one point I was
00:14:18.073 -->
00:14:21.009really, really terrible to my community.
00:14:21.404 -->
00:14:25.613So as maturing in life and becoming the person that I am today,
00:14:26.129 -->
00:14:31.105I love to give back to my community because my community is my home.
00:14:31.232 -->
00:14:35.040That's where I live and I will never forget about my community.
00:14:35.243 -->
00:14:38.807My community made me who I am today. So for the.
00:14:40.217 -->
00:14:45.122So it's a pleasure to be able to, you know, help the next generation out.
00:14:45.383 -->
00:14:49.992You know, it's a blessing to be able to do that because, you know,
00:14:50.439 -->
00:14:57.626as a leader, the greatest thing that a leader can do is teach another individual how to lead.
00:14:57.939 -->
00:15:03.685And I believe this is where Code in Motion comes in at, especially in our urban
00:15:03.685 -->
00:15:09.031area where young men and women need to see, you know, leaders.
00:15:09.264 -->
00:15:12.675You know, because we don't have that down here. You know, we really don't.
00:15:13.115 -->
00:15:19.705A lot of fakeness going on. So when they see this, that inspires them to want
00:15:19.705 -->
00:15:25.119to do something different in life than what they're accustomed to seeing in the streets.
00:15:25.542 -->
00:15:30.635And when we come around for, no matter if it's just for like two hours,
00:15:30.635 -->
00:15:35.478one or two hours, you know, it brings a positive impact to their life,
00:15:35.721 -->
00:15:38.385you know, where they want to learn.
00:15:38.385 -->
00:15:41.235They're willing to learn. And, you know,
00:15:41.931 -->
00:15:47.475it brings me joy to see that they catch on so fast and they're willing to do
00:15:47.475 -->
00:15:54.149this to the point where now, you know, they're teaching us a lot of things. And that's a blessing.
00:15:55.715 -->
00:15:59.805That leads me to my next question for you. Here, I'm going to go to the next
00:15:59.805 -->
00:16:01.984slide, because I love looking at these pictures.
00:16:02.503 -->
00:16:09.057Let's talk a little bit about some specific experiences, maybe a specific example or...
00:16:10.060 -->
00:16:12.493Timothy, tell us about, like, when you're working with a student,
00:16:13.155 -->
00:16:19.099how do you know they're getting it, right? Like, how can you tell that they're learning?
00:16:19.221 -->
00:16:22.071What are some things that you see happening?
00:16:22.821 -->
00:16:24.122It's when they take the wheel.
00:16:25.039 -->
00:16:28.602Yeah. You know, that's the whole thing. When they take the wheel,
00:16:29.176 -->
00:16:33.250I can step back for a little bit, you know, and watch them, you know,
00:16:33.250 -->
00:16:35.260because I might learn something, you know.
00:16:35.260 -->
00:16:40.800And that's when I know that they're in the zone on what they're trying to do
00:16:40.800 -->
00:16:43.640and what they're trying to learn and what we're trying to teach them.
00:16:44.012 -->
00:16:47.640And that's, man, you don't understand how much that's a blessing.
00:16:47.940 -->
00:16:49.288That's really a blessing to me.
00:16:51.180 -->
00:16:57.530I taught folks in the universe who've listened to my podcast or know me,
00:16:58.098 -->
00:17:03.670know that I spent about 10 years teaching arts, teaching dance in Brooklyn in public schools.
00:17:03.670 -->
00:17:09.156In some of the poorest and most underfunded neighborhoods. So that,
00:17:09.986 -->
00:17:14.800you know, seeing my students, you know, being able to like choreograph a dance
00:17:14.800 -->
00:17:18.006or say, hey, Ms. Dreger, look, you know, let me show you the step.
00:17:18.145 -->
00:17:20.694Remember the step you taught me? Here, I'm going to show it to you, right?
00:17:20.914 -->
00:17:24.880Like when they turn it back and teach you something, that's incredible.
00:17:24.880 -->
00:17:27.886And I love to see that. And it's happening in this program.
00:17:28.130 -->
00:17:35.860To kind of bring it home, I want to do a, you know, I want each person to give me one big takeaway.
00:17:36.220 -->
00:17:41.430People who are listening, if you want folks to walk away thinking about remembering
00:17:41.430 -->
00:17:44.291one thing from today, I want to start with you, Timothy.
00:17:44.750 -->
00:17:48.500Then I'll go Timothy Ta, Coach Ron, and I'll keep going. So,
00:17:49.051 -->
00:17:52.980Timothy, last thoughts, closing thoughts, big insight.
00:17:53.520 -->
00:17:57.501What do you want people to walk away from this experience thinking about?
00:17:58.242 -->
00:18:00.547That whole emotion is worth it.
00:18:01.560 -->
00:18:04.720But it's really worth it. And I'm going to say this.
00:18:05.775 -->
00:18:09.246I would like to thank Heather Kelly and Coach Ron for, you know,
00:18:09.664 -->
00:18:12.688bringing this to the UMA apartment, you know, because.
00:18:14.411 -->
00:18:19.356It, it helped me throughout school, you know, like I,
00:18:19.832 -->
00:18:24.057I learned how to focus more when I was doing coding motion and when I was learning
00:18:24.057 -->
00:18:28.667coding motion and when I was out there in the field teaching kids about coding
00:18:28.667 -->
00:18:33.797motion, I learned a lot about myself, you know, and it helped me throughout school, you know,
00:18:34.565 -->
00:18:41.008when I was, you know, like when I'm with the kids and I'm presenting, you know, it,
00:18:41.707 -->
00:18:48.620it gave me the confidence and the experience to be able to go in class and present
00:18:48.782 -->
00:18:51.567my presentation in front of the whole class.
00:18:51.567 -->
00:18:56.897And that, that meant a lot to me, you know, and I know that if that did that
00:18:56.897 -->
00:19:02.418for me, for me, for me, I know what it can do for a child.
00:19:02.569 -->
00:19:04.966You know, I know what it can do for another adult.
00:19:05.257 -->
00:19:08.707You know, it's all about planting seeds. you know, and watching it grow.
00:19:08.707 -->
00:19:10.824And that's what we're doing within our community.
00:19:11.044 -->
00:19:15.607We're planting seeds, you know, not only for the kids, but for the adults.
00:19:15.909 -->
00:19:17.697The adults want to learn also, you know.
00:19:18.697 -->
00:19:23.627Education is infinite. Knowledge is infinite. Everybody has the right to learn, you know.
00:19:23.627 -->
00:19:31.573So just being able to teach in my community and, you know, with help.
00:19:32.697 -->
00:19:40.478We're going to plant more seeds in other communities that, that really need it, that deserves it.
00:19:40.617 -->
00:19:45.957You know, we're trying to kill stigmas of our community and this is where it starts at.
00:19:46.166 -->
00:19:51.344You know, and I'm a true firm believer at killing the stigma of Skid Row.
00:19:51.952 -->
00:19:56.957You know, I'm a true firm believer of that. And, you know, with the help of
00:19:56.957 -->
00:20:03.511coach Ron, Todd, and a few other people, I mean, we're gonna end the stigma of skid row,
00:20:03.975 -->
00:20:09.850you know and by doing this this is just the start this is just the start and you know,
00:20:10.867 -->
00:20:15.091With health, we should go far. I mean, extremely far with this.
00:20:15.091 -->
00:20:16.663This is just the beginning of it.
00:20:17.406 -->
00:20:20.423This is a tip of the iceberg, really. Tip of the iceberg.
00:20:21.026 -->
00:20:25.899I love that. I'm going to go to Todd for your close cuts. Thank you so much, Timothy. Yes.
00:20:26.793 -->
00:20:33.891As I salute you, Timothy, I want to share my appreciation for you,
00:20:33.891 -->
00:20:35.552Timothy, working alongside of you.
00:20:36.112 -->
00:20:41.150I want to share my appreciation for you, Coach, for having the idea of bringing this to the community.
00:20:41.551 -->
00:20:47.606And I want to say thank you, Heather and Kelly, for meeting Coach and putting it together.
00:20:48.751 -->
00:20:53.080And I'm going to talk to you today, and I want to leave the last one, Dennis Rodman.
00:20:55.151 -->
00:21:01.081You know, the feeder, Aurora, you know, for bringing us all in, you know.
00:21:01.081 -->
00:21:06.106And I just want to say this, reflecting off this picture, learning,
00:21:06.556 -->
00:21:10.573healing, and growth, it happens collectively.
00:21:11.380 -->
00:21:15.151It happens collectively As in the picture, you've got an elder teaching the
00:21:15.151 -->
00:21:17.510two youth And believe me.
00:21:19.971 -->
00:21:25.791If one of these students have a question The other one is going to get the information
00:21:25.791 -->
00:21:31.227as well So if they both ask the right questions, they're going to have everything they need
00:21:31.587 -->
00:21:36.241So learning, healing, it works together That's why we're out here learning,
00:21:36.241 -->
00:21:41.070healing, and progressing our future I love that. Thank you.
00:21:41.418 -->
00:21:44.851We have two minutes left. I want to hear from Coach Ron. Closing thoughts.
00:21:47.545 -->
00:21:50.936Summer's coming up. Support the summer program.
00:21:51.453 -->
00:21:55.172The school is out June the 12th, so we got a few weeks.
00:21:55.455 -->
00:22:03.030If you guys feel the need to see this continue past the funding cycle, summer is needed.
00:22:03.361 -->
00:22:05.493Support the program. Not that.
00:22:06.500 -->
00:22:09.642Oh, sorry. Heather, closing thoughts or final words?
00:22:10.095 -->
00:22:13.506Really quickly, I know we're almost done. I want to thank you really quickly,
00:22:13.506 -->
00:22:19.806Aurora, for convening a space where I could meet Coach and Kelly in this cross-sector
00:22:19.806 -->
00:22:22.654collaboration, which I never would have had a chance to meet them.
00:22:22.968 -->
00:22:26.341And more importantly, not more importantly, but just as importantly,
00:22:26.545 -->
00:22:31.846Ta and Timothy and being exposed to the Skid Row community, which by far is,
00:22:32.466 -->
00:22:35.606one of the most beautiful communities I have ever stepped foot in.
00:22:35.946 -->
00:22:42.844I've learned so much, and this is the most impactful, profound project of my life. Thank you. Kelly?
00:22:43.915 -->
00:22:47.626Agreed. We're open from all sides.
00:22:48.543 -->
00:22:52.916We brought stuff to Skid Row. Skid Row brought stuff to us. We've never seen
00:22:52.916 -->
00:22:57.641such a love of community as we saw there on the ground.
00:22:57.989 -->
00:23:01.736It's great. And we hope to keep doing it. We're putting in proposals.
00:23:01.736 -->
00:23:08.416We're looking for funding to keep things going. and we'll get there.
00:23:08.416 -->
00:23:12.616I want to quote Timothy really quickly. You said this a couple meetings ago,
00:23:12.616 -->
00:23:13.787learning should be free.
00:23:16.366 -->
00:23:18.361Fortunately, we need some funding to get there.
00:23:19.696 -->
00:23:23.781I'm going to keep it going. Yeah. Thank you all so much for joining us today.
00:23:23.781 -->
00:23:27.972Thank you to folks who are listening, folks who are watching back and for my panel.
00:23:28.186 -->
00:23:31.671And you all kept thanking me, Aurora, for bringing you together, which I appreciate.
00:23:32.031 -->
00:23:38.121Again, like the organizer, but it's the funding that we got from EALA,
00:23:38.121 -->
00:23:42.531from Innovate EDU, and further up the chain from this funding was made possible
00:23:42.531 -->
00:23:43.857through the Oak Foundation.
00:23:44.199 -->
00:23:45.632So thank you to them as well.
