2 Chronicles 23 explained. The young King Joash is crowned, Queen Athaliah is overthrown, and Judah returns to worshipping the Lord.
After six years of Athaliah's rule, Jehoiada the priest organises a plan to restore David's royal line. With the support of the Levites and military leaders, he brings the young Joash out of hiding and crowns him king in the Temple.
When Athaliah discovers what has happened, she cries out, “Treason!” However, she is removed from the Temple and executed, ending her wicked reign.
Jehoiada then renews the covenant between God, the king, and the people. The people destroy the temple of Baal, restore proper worship, and celebrate the establishment of Joash as king.
2 Chronicles 23 highlights God's faithfulness to His promises, the courage of faithful leaders, and the importance of restoring true worship.
Despite Athaliah's attempt to destroy David's dynasty, God preserves His covenant promises. This ultimately points toward Jesus Christ, the promised Son of David, whose kingdom will never be overthrown.
