What do driverless military trucks, disappearing starter homes, Hyundai's remarkable evolution, and cars you can actually drive using solar power have in common? They're all challenging what we thought was possible.
In this episode of The TechMobility Podcast, we explore four developments that could reshape our future.
First, the U.S. Army prepares to test autonomous Ford F-250 pickups for dangerous battlefield assignments. Could commercially available trucks equipped with autonomous technology save soldiers' lives while transforming military operations?
Next, is homeownership becoming an impossible dream for younger Americans? We examine how soaring housing costs, mortgage rates, limited inventory, and disappearing starter homes are putting the American Dream increasingly out of reach for an entire generation.
Then, we trace Hyundai's extraordinary evolution from its humble American beginnings to a respected global automotive powerhouse. Better engineering, improved quality, industry-leading warranties, and ambitious expansion plans have transformed the company into a serious competitor across gasoline, hybrid, and electric vehicles.
Finally, solar-powered cars you can actually drive may be closer to reality than you think. We examine Aptera's innovative solar-electric vehicle, its radical approach to efficiency, and whether sunlight can meaningfully extend driving range and reduce the need to plug in.
From battlefield autonomy to affordable housing, automotive evolution, and solar-powered mobility, the future is arriving—and challenging expectations along the way.

00:00:53.119 --> 00:00:55.840
One more note before we get started.
00:00:56.240 --> 00:01:05.439
If you may find yourself in Central Iowa, pretendably I'm thinking about Tuesday night, October 20th, come on out and join me.
00:01:05.519 --> 00:01:09.840
I've got a book signing for my first book, To Our Entrepreneur.
00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:19.120
It is a system designed to help people who are stuck with that one great idea but don't have a clue or the time to actually do something with it.
00:01:19.359 --> 00:01:22.319
I've developed a system to help you get on stock.
00:01:22.400 --> 00:01:25.840
And I'd sure love to meet you if you're going to be in the neighborhood.
00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:30.400
That's going to be at Beaverdale Books, 2629, Beaver Avenue.
00:01:30.480 --> 00:01:32.799
That's in Des Moines, 6 30 p.m.
00:01:33.120 --> 00:01:35.840
to 8 o'clock at that time, and I'll be there.
00:01:35.920 --> 00:01:38.480
I'll sign books, be glad to meet you, talk with you.
00:01:38.799 --> 00:01:42.560
You know, we're anything pretty much just fair game because I love to talk about it just about anything.
00:01:42.799 --> 00:01:46.400
Tuesday, October 20th, that's 6 30 p.m.
00:01:46.560 --> 00:01:47.359
to 8 o'clock.
00:01:47.599 --> 00:01:52.480
That's going to be at Beaverdale Books, 2629, Beaver Avenue.
00:01:52.560 --> 00:01:53.680
That's in Des Moines.
00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:56.719
I would love to see you come on out.
00:01:57.120 --> 00:01:59.760
From the Tech Mobility News Desk.
00:02:00.079 --> 00:02:00.640
The U.S.
00:02:00.959 --> 00:02:07.200
Army is exploring robotic Ford F-250 pickups.
00:02:07.840 --> 00:02:10.000
Let that settle for a minute.
00:02:10.960 --> 00:02:11.599
The U.S.
00:02:11.759 --> 00:02:17.919
Army will test four autonomous Ford F-250s in an upcoming exercise.
00:02:19.280 --> 00:02:27.680
Basically, what this is, it's a Ford F-250 that's been outfitted with autonomous software by a company called Fordera.
00:02:28.240 --> 00:02:32.879
And this software is already used by the Marines uncrewed missile trucks.
00:02:32.960 --> 00:02:36.080
So this is not new to the Army, it's new to Ford.
00:02:36.319 --> 00:02:37.919
What does this mean?
00:02:39.039 --> 00:02:53.439
Well, as they're trying to evaluate these vehicles in a training exercise, it's really part of a broader effort to determine whether familiar commercial vehicles can perform dangerous battlefield jobs without soldiers.
00:02:53.759 --> 00:03:05.840
The more you can buy off the shelf, the lower the cost, the easier the availability, and the quicker that you can get these vehicles should they break down, be damaged, or destroyed.
00:03:06.879 --> 00:03:16.000
For many years, our military has counted on very specific equipment built to specifications that they set.
00:03:16.319 --> 00:03:19.120
The good news is they specify what they want.
00:03:19.280 --> 00:03:35.599
The bad news is that these are very rarely not off-the-shelf products, which have to be specifically designed and engineered, which adds money, time, and turnaround, particularly if they get something wrong, you may not necessarily get a chance to fix it.
00:03:35.759 --> 00:03:38.080
It gets real expensive really fast.
00:03:39.520 --> 00:03:49.919
Fortterra, the defense technology company supplying the truck's autonomous driving system, says that the vehicles could eventually support missions such as route clearance and breaching.
00:03:50.159 --> 00:03:56.240
Work that can require soldiers to spend hours searching mined roads and positioning explosives.
00:03:56.560 --> 00:04:03.120
Anything that gets our men and women in the military out of harm's way, I'm all the way for.
00:04:03.439 --> 00:04:04.560
Absolutely.
00:04:04.800 --> 00:04:10.800
And it's actually the part of the Army that'd be testing these is the uh 17th Airborne Corps.
00:04:11.039 --> 00:04:13.199
They're the ones that are going to experiment with them.
00:04:13.599 --> 00:04:32.720
Ford's popularity and readily available supply of parts could make the robotic trucks easier to maintain and repair, meaning that all the benefit, number one, the army gets all the benefit of all the modernization if Ford is done to the truck that they don't have to space special for, meaning it would cost less.
00:04:32.879 --> 00:04:39.360
And obviously, being a truck of the military, not the luxurious truck, but the work truck.
00:04:39.519 --> 00:04:42.319
So you get it really becomes quite a value.
00:04:42.480 --> 00:04:46.639
But it's interesting, obviously, I understand why they wouldn't pick an F-150.
00:04:46.800 --> 00:04:51.360
But I'm kind of surprised why they wouldn't go a little bit deeper and go all the way for an F-350.
00:04:51.519 --> 00:04:58.399
And really, what we're talking about is the strength of the frame, what it can carry, what it can do, how much abuse it can take.
00:04:58.560 --> 00:05:02.319
Apparently, they think the F-250 will get that done.
00:05:03.279 --> 00:05:21.120
As I mentioned earlier, for many military systems, the Pentagon has notoriously complex supply chains for thousands of specialized parts available from only a small number of manufacturers, or in some cases, God forbid, sole suppliers.
00:05:21.360 --> 00:05:34.240
Spare part availability and delivery delays have been known to sideline military equipment for months, even years, and have contributed to equipment readiness problems.
00:05:35.680 --> 00:05:42.240
If you could walk into a Ford plant and schedule, I need 25 trucks, this specification.
00:06:01.199 --> 00:06:02.560
So there's that.
00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:14.480
Forteris autonomous software, as I mentioned earlier, is already being integrated into the Marine Corps, namely Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System.
00:06:14.560 --> 00:06:15.920
That is a lot to say.
00:06:16.160 --> 00:06:27.839
Nemesis N-M-E-I-S-I-S, Nemesis, an anti-ship missile system built on the chassis of a joint light tactical vehicle.
00:06:28.079 --> 00:06:35.680
The company has already delivered a hundred smaller ruggedized vehicles to Ukraine that are already performing ground missions.
00:06:35.920 --> 00:06:44.000
These vehicles come complete with a Starlink internet antenna and can haul heavy loads up to nearly 1,700 pounds.
00:06:45.199 --> 00:07:03.519
No surprise, uncrewed ground vehicles are increasingly prolific in Ukraine, where they've been used to varying degrees of effectiveness for missions like assaults and casualty evacuation, reducing the risk to the troops facing constant threats from small aerial drones, particularly in frontline kill zones.
00:07:03.759 --> 00:07:09.519
The battle in Ukraine has also exposed some limitations with the remotely operated vehicles.
00:07:09.759 --> 00:07:18.000
Video feeds, for example, require significant bandwidth and can generate an electronic warfare signature that enemy forces might detect.
00:07:18.639 --> 00:07:29.920
Rather than being continuously driven by distant operators, vehicles can instead receive short, low bandwidth commands similar to a text message or follow pre-programmed routes.
00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:38.639
The Pentacon sees the autonomous vehicles as a way to remove troops from dangerous, time-consuming work or freeing them for other missions.
00:07:38.800 --> 00:07:46.319
But systems have to be rugged and reliable enough to effectively take on human tasks in combat.
00:07:46.560 --> 00:07:55.680
There is nothing more demanding than the front lines in a theater of warfare, for sure.
00:07:55.920 --> 00:07:57.759
Are the F-150s up for it?
00:07:57.839 --> 00:08:04.240
Or more importantly, is the autonomous software operating the F-150s up for it?
00:08:04.800 --> 00:08:08.319
That is the question that the Army is going to assess.
00:08:08.480 --> 00:08:13.759
And the question and the answer is if that's true, then will that become the vehicle of choice?
00:08:13.920 --> 00:08:15.519
Will General Motors have a chance?
00:08:15.680 --> 00:08:18.560
Will Stillantis have a chance in a RAM group?
00:08:18.720 --> 00:08:32.720
Because obviously, if you're looking for off-the-post off-the-shelf parts and you're looking to diversify your build, then it would make sense that you would want different manufacturers providing the same thing.
00:08:32.799 --> 00:08:34.399
Really, that's what they did in World War II.
00:08:34.480 --> 00:08:38.000
The Jeep was actually made by three or four different companies.
00:08:38.240 --> 00:08:40.559
Not one company built the Jeep.
00:08:42.320 --> 00:08:55.519
So if this thing takes off, I would imagine that it would make sense to also evaluate a product from GM, a Chevrolet GMC, a Ram truck, perhaps, maybe different size trucks.
00:08:55.600 --> 00:08:56.799
Will they consider a Ranger?
00:08:56.960 --> 00:09:01.039
Will they consider a Canyon or something like that?
00:09:01.279 --> 00:09:02.159
We'll see.
00:09:02.639 --> 00:09:10.720
But it should be interesting that we're getting a little common sense into the supply chain aspects of military procurement.
00:09:10.879 --> 00:09:15.440
I will tell you this, it's one baby step, and boy, is it about time.
00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:16.960
Absolutely.
00:09:17.279 --> 00:09:23.840
So we'll talk about that because we talk about everything relative to transportation on the Tech Mobility Show.
00:09:23.919 --> 00:09:28.080
And I just wanted you to know that autonomy is going to war.
00:09:29.519 --> 00:09:32.559
Is home ownership unattainable for young Americans?
00:09:32.720 --> 00:09:37.039
We investigate! You are listening to Tech Mobility Show.

00:11:56.639 --> 00:12:01.440
The new BMW 740 L comes equipped with a unique motion sensor.
00:12:02.639 --> 00:12:06.559
It ensures that whatever is inside the car will remain safe.
00:12:08.960 --> 00:12:11.679
No matter what might be outside the car.
00:12:12.639 --> 00:12:15.919
BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
00:12:16.320 --> 00:12:18.559
Let me paint you a picture.
00:12:18.879 --> 00:12:27.440
This commercial was a television commercial for the 1996 BMW 740IL, the long wheel base 740.
00:12:27.759 --> 00:12:33.840
It opens with a Boa constrictor laying up on the windshield and on the hood.
00:12:34.399 --> 00:12:39.519
Inside the car, on top of the steering wheel, is a little white mouse.
00:12:39.840 --> 00:12:44.960
And obviously the mouse is eyeing the boa constrictor, and the boa constrictor is looking at a snack.
00:12:45.200 --> 00:12:51.039
And as the boa constrictor moves and tries to get into the car, it sets off the motion sensor.
00:12:51.279 --> 00:12:56.720
Scares the boa constrictor, boa constrictor leaves, mouse is safe for another way, another day.
00:12:56.879 --> 00:13:01.759
It was a very um evident way of making a point.
00:13:02.080 --> 00:13:05.679
And definitely you wouldn't forget it if you saw the commercial for sure.
00:13:05.919 --> 00:13:10.320
You ended up rooting for the mouse, and at least the mouse got to live another day that day.
00:13:10.559 --> 00:13:12.480
My question is of twofold.
00:13:12.559 --> 00:13:14.720
One, what's a board constructor doing on my car?
00:13:14.799 --> 00:13:16.720
And two, what's up with the mouse?
00:13:17.039 --> 00:13:18.480
And why didn't my cat get it?
00:13:18.720 --> 00:13:21.279
But that's another story for another time.
00:13:23.120 --> 00:13:30.159
Are young Americans permanently priced out of home ownership and designed to be renters forever?
00:13:30.799 --> 00:13:32.720
Let me give you some context first.
00:13:33.519 --> 00:13:39.360
Forty-eight percent of baby boomers, that would be folks my age, were homeowners by age 30.
00:13:39.600 --> 00:13:41.519
And I fell into that, absolutely.
00:13:41.840 --> 00:13:46.159
For millennials, that rate has fallen to one-third.
00:13:47.440 --> 00:13:55.200
Elevated home prices combined with high mortgage rates have made home ownership feel out of reach for many young adults.
00:13:55.440 --> 00:14:02.960
Meanwhile, rent increases have further strained household budgets, making it difficult for renters to save for a down payment.
00:14:03.200 --> 00:14:07.120
This is what they call, ladies and gentlemen, an affordability crisis.
00:14:07.440 --> 00:14:09.279
This is topic A.
00:14:10.480 --> 00:14:22.000
It used to be long time ago, you could own a home with one income, a halfway decent car and a decent neighborhood, raise your family.
00:14:23.279 --> 00:14:37.919
Today, the average well-paid millennial is having a hard time trying to save money for the typical 10 to 20% down payment that they would require.
00:14:38.159 --> 00:14:46.320
Even if they qualified for a first-time buyer program, if your city, state, or town offers that, it's still 5%.
00:14:49.200 --> 00:14:57.759
If the price of your house is$320,000 and you're trying to compare 10% is$32,000.
00:15:03.120 --> 00:15:05.039
That's a lot of money.
00:15:07.039 --> 00:15:13.840
Here in Des Moines, in our city, our state, they brag that Des Moines is very livable, very wonderful.
00:15:14.080 --> 00:15:17.919
We are building apartments like nobody's business downtown.
00:15:18.399 --> 00:15:19.440
And I got curious.
00:15:19.519 --> 00:15:21.919
I started looking at the apartments and pricing them.
00:15:22.159 --> 00:15:23.360
Got curious.
00:15:24.080 --> 00:15:29.679
Most of these apartments are built for single people, and they're small.
00:15:30.240 --> 00:15:35.919
I'm talking anywhere from 500 to 900 square feet, that's small people.
00:15:36.240 --> 00:15:47.360
And they want between, oh my goodness, I've seen prices starting around 900 to 1,000 a month on up for basically a very snug one-bedroom.
00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:49.440
You want a two-bedroom?
00:15:49.600 --> 00:15:50.960
Well, that goes up 50%.
00:15:51.279 --> 00:16:01.919
If you want what I would consider a decent sized two-bedroom, say about 1,300, 1,400 square feet, you're going to be paying even in Des Moines, well north of$2,000 a month.
00:16:03.679 --> 00:16:18.080
If rents keep going up, and you're working, you're thinking about starting a family, you've got student loans to pay, you're working a full-time job, you might even, because in Iowa, you don't got much of a choice, you're going to own some kind of car.
00:16:18.720 --> 00:16:22.399
Ain't necessarily going to be a luxury car, but you're going to have four wheels somewhere.
00:16:22.480 --> 00:16:26.960
You're either paying on or you own outright, and it's old, but you're going to have one.
00:16:28.559 --> 00:16:30.080
That is crazy.
00:16:30.960 --> 00:16:32.720
Let me add some more.
00:16:34.080 --> 00:16:37.759
Today's young adults are renting for longer than ever.
00:16:38.159 --> 00:16:53.600
They are members of the renter generation, a group made up of Generation Z and millennials, including college-educated workers in their 30s and 40s, who likely would have been homeowners in earlier decades.
00:16:53.919 --> 00:16:58.080
If they were boomers, they would have owned their first home by now.
00:16:58.559 --> 00:17:02.960
But yet they're in their 30s, early 40s, and still renting.
00:17:03.120 --> 00:17:05.440
Not because they don't want to own a home.
00:17:06.079 --> 00:17:09.599
But number one, high rents makes it hard to save.
00:17:09.759 --> 00:17:14.240
Number two, high home prices make it hard to buy and come up with that deposit.
00:17:14.400 --> 00:17:19.839
Number three, high interest rates makes trying to swing that monthly payment hard too.
00:17:19.920 --> 00:17:23.039
And then there's insurance and maintenance on top of that.
00:17:24.400 --> 00:17:44.720
The median age renters in the United States of America, median age, is now 42, up from 38 in 2006, and nearly one-third of those folk have a college degree or higher compared to 22% in 2010.
00:17:44.880 --> 00:17:45.920
What's going on?
00:17:46.240 --> 00:17:55.200
Even more education for a better job doesn't necessarily mean that you will be in a place where you can save enough money to buy your first house.
00:17:56.079 --> 00:18:02.720
And with the squeeze on, houses that contractors are building are upscale.
00:18:02.880 --> 00:18:08.319
There is no money in a starter house for them because the cost of materials and everything is so high.
00:18:13.039 --> 00:18:22.160
So they're gonna maximize profit, meaning they're gonna be edging closer, at least out here, in a$400,000 range.
00:18:22.319 --> 00:18:23.680
Again, remember the math.
00:18:23.759 --> 00:18:32.000
If you're coming up with 20% down, that's$80,000, 10% down is 40 grand, 5% is$20,000.
00:18:33.279 --> 00:18:44.960
If you are working, have a decent apartment, one car, thinking about kids, but maybe you don't have kids yet, and trying to save, you are in a bind today.
00:18:46.799 --> 00:18:51.920
So we've got a drying up of starter homes because there's no money in it.
00:18:52.160 --> 00:18:53.279
There's just no money in it.
00:18:53.359 --> 00:18:54.799
So they're walking away from those.
00:18:54.960 --> 00:18:58.079
So the houses that people could afford, fine.
00:18:58.400 --> 00:19:10.000
If you have refinanced your house in the last 20 years at 2-3%, particularly after the recession, why would you even buy another one?
00:19:10.240 --> 00:19:13.680
Because you know the rates, whatever they are, will be higher than what you're paying now.
00:19:13.839 --> 00:19:15.039
So you're gonna stay put.
00:19:15.200 --> 00:19:24.400
So even if you live in a house that either you want to downsize or you want to get another house or a bigger house, whatever, you're gonna tend to stay put because you're gonna look at the same math.
00:19:24.559 --> 00:19:33.599
I own a home, you say, and I'm paying two and a half, three percent interest compared to seven percent now.
00:19:34.000 --> 00:19:36.240
It makes no economic sense.
00:19:36.960 --> 00:19:39.279
So these kids are in a bind.
00:19:39.680 --> 00:19:47.920
And with rents going up faster than ever before, it's chipping away at their ability to save money for the house.
00:19:48.400 --> 00:19:50.880
And even if they get in the house, can they keep it?
00:19:51.759 --> 00:19:53.119
This is the problem we're in.
00:19:53.200 --> 00:19:58.400
There's a lot of things coming at folks right now that are impacting home ownership.
00:19:59.039 --> 00:20:01.759
And finally, some folks are just deciding, you know what?
00:20:01.920 --> 00:20:04.880
I'm gonna wait to have kids, I'm gonna wait to get married, and you know what?
00:20:05.039 --> 00:20:09.440
I'm gonna take that money instead of putting it in a house, I'm gonna save it and invest it.
00:20:10.000 --> 00:20:15.839
Because I can do better if I do it that way, as opposed to trying to buy a house because it's just I'm chasing it, I can't catch it.
00:20:17.200 --> 00:20:20.400
What we're doing now for affordability ain't working, people.
00:20:20.640 --> 00:20:27.519
There's not enough of it, and it needs to be way, way more than we're currently doing right now.
00:20:29.440 --> 00:20:34.079
Look out, world! Here comes Hyundai, and they show no signs of slowing down.
00:20:34.240 --> 00:20:36.000
Even Toyota is worried.
00:20:36.240 --> 00:20:38.799

00:21:47.599 --> 00:21:52.319
Those of us who were around during the 1980s remember the Hyundai XL.
00:21:52.720 --> 00:21:56.160
It was cheap with questionable questionable reliability.
00:21:56.400 --> 00:21:58.880
The new Korean upstart was once the butt of jokes.
00:21:58.960 --> 00:21:59.680
Yeah, that Fordo.
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:01.119
Was horrible.
00:22:01.359 --> 00:22:02.000
It was.
00:22:02.640 --> 00:22:07.920
In the 1990s, 1992 came, there was a recession, it almost killed General Motors.
00:22:08.079 --> 00:22:15.599
Um, demand for what Hyundai was selling in the United States fell to the point where they were reconsidering whether to pull out of the United States entirely.
00:22:15.759 --> 00:22:16.799
But they didn't.
00:22:16.960 --> 00:22:29.440
They decided to double down, started bringing out new vehicles, and uh, in the midst of the Asian financial crisis in the late 1990s, they bought Kia and added them to the fold.
00:22:30.000 --> 00:22:43.920
By 2006, the Hyundai Sonata rivaled the Honda Accord in build quality as the automaker built its first American manufacturing plant, that being in Montgomery, Alabama.
00:22:55.119 --> 00:23:00.240
In 2007, Hyundai announced their intention of launching a luxury brand.
00:23:00.480 --> 00:23:06.960
And yeah, we laughed, but not anymore, because Hyundai is on a roll.
00:23:07.359 --> 00:23:09.039
This is topic B.
00:23:10.160 --> 00:23:13.279
Let me fill in the blanks for you.
00:23:14.640 --> 00:23:28.400
In 1999, Hyundai did a master stroke that even to this day, no other manufacturer outside of the Hyundai group offers this kind of warranty.
00:23:29.039 --> 00:23:33.440
Ten years, 100,000 miles on the engine.
00:23:34.000 --> 00:23:34.880
Guaranteed.
00:23:35.920 --> 00:23:39.759
I believe it's six years, 60,000 on everything else.
00:23:40.559 --> 00:23:48.400
It is the best warranty in the industry, and I mean better than Mercedes, better than BMW, better than Lexus, better than Toyota.
00:23:48.720 --> 00:23:52.160
Nobody else has a warranty that strong.
00:23:53.279 --> 00:23:58.720
All because that at the turn of the century, the folks at Hyundai said, you know what?
00:23:59.279 --> 00:24:01.200
We're gonna get serious about quality.
00:24:01.359 --> 00:24:03.119
We are going to get serious.
00:24:03.359 --> 00:24:17.599
And with Kia now under their fold, and I told folks down through the years when all I was doing was writing car reviews, I said, keep your eye on Kia, because every time they come out with a new generation, it's not evolutionary, it's revolutionary.
00:24:17.680 --> 00:24:22.240
They are leaping better and better and better.
00:24:22.720 --> 00:24:36.960
And right now, believe it or not, Hyundai Group is the third largest automaker in the world that is behind Toyota and Volkswagen.
00:24:37.759 --> 00:24:43.440
They make more vehicles worldwide than all but two manufacturers.
00:24:44.079 --> 00:24:45.759
Let that sink in a minute.
00:24:46.880 --> 00:24:51.759
You don't get there by billing shoddy products because folks are one and done.
00:24:52.880 --> 00:24:55.759
And they've been here now 40 years.
00:24:56.880 --> 00:24:58.240
40 years.
00:24:58.960 --> 00:25:00.559
Oh, I should add this.
00:25:00.880 --> 00:25:04.559
I said they were the third largest automaker in the world, right?
00:25:04.960 --> 00:25:06.480
But I should add this.
00:25:07.039 --> 00:25:09.920
They're number two from a profit standpoint.
00:25:10.079 --> 00:25:14.880
And between Toyota and Volkswagen, I I'll let you guess which one's more profitable.
00:25:15.119 --> 00:25:16.880
Hint, it ain't German.
00:25:17.440 --> 00:25:18.799
Just so you know.
00:25:21.359 --> 00:25:28.000
Last year, Hyundai and Genesis brands sold 4.24 million vehicles.
00:25:28.160 --> 00:25:34.720
When you throw in Kia, that goes up to 7.24 million vehicles worldwide.
00:25:36.079 --> 00:25:37.359
And they ain't done.
00:25:37.599 --> 00:25:45.839
The new plan calls for boosting Hyundai and Genesis capacity by 1.27 million vehicles annually by 2030.
00:25:46.079 --> 00:25:49.119
A million and a quarter, more vehicles than they're building now.
00:25:50.079 --> 00:25:53.039
If Hyundai does that, who loses?
00:25:53.680 --> 00:25:55.119
Think about that for a minute.
00:25:55.759 --> 00:25:58.480
Demand can only expand by so much.
00:25:59.039 --> 00:26:02.480
And if Hyundai's winning converts, it means somebody isn't.
00:26:02.799 --> 00:26:04.960
And somebody's sales are falling.
00:26:05.680 --> 00:26:11.599
That 1.27 million is the equivalent of four to five traditional assembly plants.
00:26:12.240 --> 00:26:16.880
But like the auto industry, they will squeeze a lot of that out of existing facilities.
00:26:17.039 --> 00:26:19.279
They may build one or two.
00:26:20.000 --> 00:26:26.000
And in case you were wondering, and for those of y'all that didn't hear me right, I said Hyundai, not Honda.
00:26:26.319 --> 00:26:28.400
Hyundai out of Korea.
00:26:41.759 --> 00:26:47.599
They have parts plants, engine plants in the United States of America, just so you know.
00:26:48.240 --> 00:26:49.759
They ain't important a lot of this.
00:26:49.920 --> 00:26:51.359
They're building it here.
00:26:51.519 --> 00:26:53.680
And that is part of Hyundai's strategy.
00:26:53.839 --> 00:26:56.400
They build locally, they sell locally.
00:26:56.640 --> 00:26:59.759
Funny thing though, they weren't the first to come up with that strategy.
00:26:59.920 --> 00:27:11.039
The Ford Motor Company did, actually over a hundred years ago, which is why a lot of parts in the United States have buildings still standing that used to be Ford assembly plants, including right here in Des Moines.
00:27:11.519 --> 00:27:16.079
Because Ford believed in selling where building where they sold.
00:27:16.480 --> 00:27:19.599
And they built plants all over the country.
00:27:20.400 --> 00:27:21.759
But that was a different time.
00:27:22.000 --> 00:27:28.240
Today, having one or two plants, you get, with transportation be what it is, it gets to be pretty efficient.
00:27:28.960 --> 00:27:33.839
Their latest plant, what they call the MetaPlant and Ellabel, U.S.
00:27:34.000 --> 00:27:45.279
capacity is set to rise in their plants here in the United States by 500,000 units over the next four years.
00:27:45.519 --> 00:27:46.640
What are they building?
00:27:47.200 --> 00:28:00.079
They're building hybrids, electrics, and they are bodacious enough to actually getting ready to build a body-on-frame pickup truck.
00:28:00.400 --> 00:28:01.119
Oh yeah.
00:28:01.359 --> 00:28:02.000
Yeah.
00:28:02.240 --> 00:28:09.759
And if you're hearing the ghost of Nissan, as I mentioned, that Nissan tried it for 20 years and just finally threw in the towel.
00:28:10.319 --> 00:28:13.119
This is the difference between Nissan and Toyota, really.
00:28:13.279 --> 00:28:15.039
Think of Hyundai more like Toyota.
00:28:15.200 --> 00:28:17.920
Toyota tried for years, but they were in for the long haul.
00:28:18.079 --> 00:28:21.759
Their original full-size trucks were actually three-quarter size.
00:28:22.160 --> 00:28:27.920
And you may not remember the predecessor to the Tundra, which was the T-100 in the late 1990s.
00:28:28.000 --> 00:28:33.839
And then finally Toyota decided to, you know, stop all pretense and do what you're doing.
00:28:34.160 --> 00:28:39.039
And even though the truck sells well, it's still only a fraction of what the big three sell.
00:28:39.279 --> 00:28:47.920
I think Toyota's maxed out at about 125,000, 130,000 trucks, which is, you know, almost a footnote for F series sales.
00:28:48.000 --> 00:28:51.839
Uh Ram sells more than that, and Chevy GMC sells more than that.
00:28:52.000 --> 00:28:52.880
By quite a bit.
00:28:53.200 --> 00:28:55.680
But they're here and they're making money doing it.
00:28:57.039 --> 00:28:58.160
The kicker.
00:28:59.440 --> 00:29:12.000
If that's not enough, Hyundai intends to launch globally 100 completely new and updated models by 2030.
00:29:12.480 --> 00:29:13.920
Put your seatbelt on.
00:29:14.240 --> 00:29:20.319
Of those, 58 will come to the North American market.
00:29:20.640 --> 00:29:21.680
58.
00:29:23.119 --> 00:29:28.400
Others, including some battery electric vehicles, will be reserved for markets in Europe, Latin America, and Asia.
00:29:29.279 --> 00:29:30.960
So what are they doing?
00:29:31.920 --> 00:29:37.359
The G V90 Genesis is brand new, and it's the new flagship above the G V80.
00:29:37.839 --> 00:29:39.359
I talked about the truck.
00:29:39.599 --> 00:29:46.400
And they're gonna build performance volume, performance versions of just about everything to keep the excitement going.
00:29:47.920 --> 00:29:49.680
And really, they're all set.
00:29:49.920 --> 00:29:50.640
Doesn't matter.
00:29:50.880 --> 00:29:56.400
Gasoline, electric, uh, hybrid, Hyundai's prepared to build them all.
00:29:56.720 --> 00:30:02.079
Whatever the market wants, they will be equipped to give the market what it wants at speed.
00:30:02.400 --> 00:30:07.200
And they're going to commit billions of dollars in the next four years to do it.
00:30:08.720 --> 00:30:11.359
So you wonder why Toyota's a little nervous?
00:30:11.599 --> 00:30:13.119
Yeah, that's the thing.
00:30:13.279 --> 00:30:18.799
And they expect Genesis to overtake Cadillac in the next year in terms of volume.
00:30:19.119 --> 00:30:21.440
They're already outselling Lincoln.
00:30:22.319 --> 00:30:23.839
So here's the thing.
00:30:25.200 --> 00:30:27.119
Not Honda, Hyundai.
00:30:29.200 --> 00:30:35.119
One journalist's account of driving a car covered in solar panels, no gas pumps or charging cables.
00:30:35.279 --> 00:30:38.000
We are the Tech Mobility Show.
00:30:45.519 --> 00:30:49.759
Tired of business advice that means quitting your job or grinding all night?

00:32:39.920 --> 00:32:42.480
Your idea finally deserves a real system.
00:32:47.519 --> 00:32:49.359
Solar powered cars.
00:32:49.519 --> 00:32:53.680
Yep, here at the Tech Mobility Show we have talked about them from time to time.
00:32:54.000 --> 00:32:59.200
Solar car manufacturers like Lightyear and Sono Motors have tried and failed.
00:32:59.359 --> 00:33:06.880
Even a company called Aptera threw the towel in back in 2011 after burning through tens of millions of dollars from investors.
00:33:07.279 --> 00:33:13.519
Interestingly enough, the company performed a resurrection act in 2019 by its two founders.
00:33:13.839 --> 00:33:18.720
Question is, can Aptera actually survive this time?
00:33:19.440 --> 00:33:21.440
This is topic C.
00:33:22.160 --> 00:33:23.200
Think about it.
00:33:23.759 --> 00:33:33.359
No cables, no chemistry, no gasoline, no toxic anything, just the sun powering a car.
00:33:35.839 --> 00:33:48.000
The challenge with it is that the photoelectric cells used to capture that energy are not efficient enough to move a vehicle any reasonable distance.
00:33:49.599 --> 00:33:56.160
Manufacturers have been trying really since the invention of the first electric vehicle in the 1830s.
00:33:57.599 --> 00:34:06.880
In fact, in the 1960s, one engineer bolted solar cells to a 1912 Baker Electric that maxed out at 20 miles an hour.
00:34:07.440 --> 00:34:12.400
Drivers have raced on nothing but sunlight and the Australian Outback since the 1980s.
00:34:12.719 --> 00:34:19.280
But for day-to-day, realistic, you know, consumer type stuff, not so much.
00:34:20.480 --> 00:34:23.199
This column is from the Washington Post.
00:34:23.360 --> 00:34:37.039
It's an automotive journalist who got a chance to drive Aptera's um one of Aptera's prototypes in California and kind of shared his impressions.
00:34:38.800 --> 00:34:42.079
In a perfect world, sunlight would be awesome.
00:34:42.880 --> 00:34:46.559
But sunlight requires real estate.
00:34:46.880 --> 00:34:51.440
You need enough real estate to get enough voltage to make this happen.
00:34:52.000 --> 00:34:57.840
So let's talk about how Aptera tackled that challenge.
00:35:00.079 --> 00:35:04.400
They said what they did well, let me back up.
00:35:04.559 --> 00:35:08.320
Like I mentioned, the problem, too little roof, too much vehicle.
00:35:08.800 --> 00:35:13.119
First thing, they lightened the car big time.
00:35:13.679 --> 00:35:16.400
Average car weighs about 4,300 pounds.
00:35:16.639 --> 00:35:20.320
The Aptera vehicle is down to 2250.
00:35:20.800 --> 00:35:26.320
Their vision to make one of the most efficient vehicles to hit the road.
00:35:26.559 --> 00:35:31.039
And that meant stripping out anything that wasn't absolutely necessary.
00:35:32.559 --> 00:35:44.800
Drag is a range killer for a solar car because air resistance rises with the square of speed, a vehicle burns four times more energy per mile to push air out the way at 70 miles an hour than at 35.
00:35:45.280 --> 00:35:56.480
So Aptera shaved the car's profile down to a rolling teardrop, enclosed the three wheels, sealed the underside, and added cameras and placed the side mirrors.
00:35:57.119 --> 00:36:03.679
All of that, the result of all of that, was to cut drag to roughly half that of the standard sedan.
00:36:04.719 --> 00:36:12.639
When Aptera tested the car's ability to coast after reaching 60 miles an hour, it took roughly two miles to roll to a stop.
00:36:12.960 --> 00:36:15.920
A lightness you feel at every stoplight.
00:36:16.159 --> 00:36:17.440
Now I know what you're thinking.
00:36:17.599 --> 00:36:22.159
You said, okay, a light car that I can use in the daily commute?
00:36:22.320 --> 00:36:23.199
Awesome.
00:36:23.440 --> 00:36:26.559
But if it's that light, is it gonna keep me safe?
00:36:26.880 --> 00:36:28.800
Short answer, yes, it will.
00:36:28.960 --> 00:36:43.440
They are building the car, even though as a three-wheeler, it is classified as a motorcycle, so they're not legally obligated to the heavy federal motor vehicle safety standards of a regular passenger car.
00:36:43.760 --> 00:36:47.760
Aptera says their vehicle will meet those standards.
00:36:48.960 --> 00:36:49.920
Think about that.
00:36:50.079 --> 00:36:52.480
They said they will meet them.
00:36:53.280 --> 00:36:54.320
Absolutely.
00:36:56.960 --> 00:36:58.239
What do they use?
00:36:59.280 --> 00:37:01.280
Carbon fiber body shell.
00:37:01.599 --> 00:37:05.840
The same strong material used in the Tesla Roaster and other high-performance vehicles.
00:37:06.000 --> 00:37:11.760
Yeah, any very expensive speedster is going to go carbon-wise as opposed to even fiberglass.
00:37:11.840 --> 00:37:15.440
It's strong, it's light, it's something they can use.
00:37:18.559 --> 00:37:28.159
They plan to market vehicles that are capable of driving the equivalent of 300 miles per gallon.
00:37:28.320 --> 00:37:32.559
Now bear in mind we're talking sunlight, so there is no fluid.
00:37:36.559 --> 00:37:51.920
They also think that they can sell their first vehicle, actual commercial vehicle, by the end of the year, and their forty thousand dollar launch edition will be the most efficient, energy efficient vehicle on the road.
00:37:52.239 --> 00:38:00.000
And they said at this point, not just 300, it will come in at the equivalent of 340 miles a gallon.
00:38:00.400 --> 00:38:03.119
Now I have to be completely transparent here.
00:38:03.360 --> 00:38:08.320
They've done some phenomenal things, and we'll talk about that in a minute, relative to solar cells.
00:38:08.559 --> 00:38:12.800
But this also has a 44 kilowatt hour battery in it.
00:38:13.440 --> 00:38:20.159
So while you are not totally dependent on the sun, you know, you're not gonna get stranded.
00:38:20.400 --> 00:38:23.519
So it's it's it is solar-ish.
00:38:23.920 --> 00:38:25.280
Let's put it that way.
00:38:25.599 --> 00:38:26.480
Solar-ish.
00:38:27.599 --> 00:38:33.119
A typical car roof covered in solar cells would add just three to six miles of range a day.
00:38:33.280 --> 00:38:34.320
That's the problem.
00:38:35.760 --> 00:38:42.320
Even slathering a Prius in today's most advanced solar cells, even Toyota figured less than 20 miles.
00:38:42.559 --> 00:38:50.400
But the way they've designed their solar panels, their vehicle collects about 4.2 kilowatt hours over the course of a day.
00:38:50.639 --> 00:38:54.559
The company expects to equate that to more than 40 miles of range.
00:38:54.800 --> 00:39:01.280
The company has set 30 miles a day as a more realistic expectation, or around 20 in cloudy cities like Seattle.
00:39:01.519 --> 00:39:13.519
The worst case scenario, say winter Minneapolis, would still add up to be about 3,500 miles of charge annually for nothing, or basically 10 miles a day.
00:39:14.960 --> 00:39:18.559
You can also plug in that battery I told you about, but will you need to?
00:39:18.880 --> 00:39:23.039
Statistically, the average American vehicle covers about 31 miles a day.
00:39:23.199 --> 00:39:31.039
And in the sunniest climates, an app car driver might plug in the wall only one or two times a year for road trips and dismal weather.
00:39:31.360 --> 00:39:32.480
Think about that.
00:39:32.960 --> 00:39:42.400
If you are in the southwestern part of the United States where it's mostly sunny, and you can get 30 to 40 miles, and you live maybe 15 miles from work.
00:39:43.519 --> 00:39:46.079
You know, you go to work, you park it, beautiful thing.
00:39:46.159 --> 00:39:47.199
You don't have to plug it in.
00:39:47.280 --> 00:39:51.280
If it's sunny all day while you're sitting in eight hours, it's charging.
00:39:51.599 --> 00:39:53.760
Those solar panels are working.
00:39:54.159 --> 00:39:58.719
So you might even get back four or five miles by the end of the day.
00:39:59.039 --> 00:40:01.360
Whether it's sitting there while you work all day.
00:40:02.320 --> 00:40:03.599
Think about that.
00:40:04.000 --> 00:40:09.679
And right now, you don't have to plug it in anything, you don't have to subscribe to an EV plan.
00:40:10.320 --> 00:40:10.880
Uh-uh.
00:40:11.440 --> 00:40:15.760
The solar panels do the work for little or nothing.
00:40:16.559 --> 00:40:18.960
As usual, it takes money in this industry.
00:40:19.039 --> 00:40:20.079
They're no different.
00:40:20.239 --> 00:40:26.480
They've got thousands of people that have put down refundable deposits, but they're four years late in delivering this thing.
00:40:26.880 --> 00:40:29.679
The question is, will it work this time?
00:40:29.920 --> 00:40:34.000
Can they get the production vehicles in the hands of consumers this time?
00:40:34.079 --> 00:40:36.480
And if they do, can they survive?
00:40:36.719 --> 00:40:40.000
They say they can make a profit selling 6,000 of them a year.
00:40:40.239 --> 00:40:41.440
We're gonna see.
00:40:41.679 --> 00:40:43.679
I'm thinking shades of Fisker.
00:40:43.760 --> 00:40:49.440
They built some vehicles, but you know, they just got in over the head and they still failed.
00:40:49.679 --> 00:40:57.599
Again, Aptera's the name, Solar is their game, and we're gonna find out just how they do.
00:40:57.679 --> 00:40:59.679
Hopefully, I'll run across one in the future.
00:40:59.760 --> 00:41:00.159
I hope so.
00:41:00.239 --> 00:41:01.599
I'd love to drive it.
