What forces an ordinary person to put their life, career, and freedom on the line?
In this episode of The Sunday Draft, human rights activist and author Brian Dooley joins host श्रीraj to share eleven true stories from his new book, Defiant: Profiles of Resistance. Over his 35-year career traveling to global frontlines, Brian has documented a striking phenomenon: the rise of the “accidental activist.”
These aren’t professional NGO workers or cape-wearing superheroes. They are everyday people—classically trained violinists turned frontline ambulance drivers, food scientists facing espionage charges for publishing toxic water data, and regular citizens countering online disinformation campaigns by the thousands.
Brian challenges the “over-professionalization” of human rights work, arguing that calling activists “tireless” or “fearless” actually does more harm than good. In reality, they are exhausted and terrified—but they choose to act anyway.
We dive deep into what sparks this defiance, the immense psychological toll of long-term resistance, and why hard-won historical progress proves that modern authoritarianism will only collapse if everyday people push it.
