You've got this.
00:00:35.185 --> 00:00:42.601
Has your child ever felt anxious about attending school?
00:00:42.601 --> 00:00:44.612
I know my children have.
00:00:44.612 --> 00:00:47.722
Hi everyone, and welcome to the Special Parent Podcast.
00:00:47.722 --> 00:00:49.225
I'm Dr Deanna Iverson.
00:00:49.927 --> 00:00:57.112
Today we're continuing our talks about fear and anxiety in our children, and some of this can even be applied to ourselves.
00:00:57.112 --> 00:01:09.367
So today, specifically talking about going back to school, I had a special guest and we did a couple episodes actually on back to school tips, tricks, especially for special needs parents.
00:01:09.367 --> 00:01:13.302
So Shauna Fox and I have a three-part series that is already posted.
00:01:13.302 --> 00:01:17.903
So if you haven't had a chance to go to specialparentorg and check that out, I highly recommend it.
00:01:17.903 --> 00:01:21.111
Even if you're into the school year, it's still a good way.
00:01:21.111 --> 00:01:25.965
Maybe it can help kind of rewrite a rocky ship or help you with that second semester start.
00:01:27.468 --> 00:01:30.212
Our goal as parents is to empower our children.
00:01:30.212 --> 00:01:39.013
We want to help our children navigate the emotions that they're going to experience Anxiety and fear are normal.
00:01:39.013 --> 00:01:40.924
In fact, all of our emotions are normal.
00:01:40.924 --> 00:01:46.001
They're all part of our everyday life, our everyday experience as human beings.
00:01:46.001 --> 00:01:49.531
It's how we navigate these emotions that's key.
00:01:49.531 --> 00:01:54.804
It's critical to our success as adults and our success in our relationships.
00:01:54.804 --> 00:01:58.209
So emotions happen to us.
00:01:58.209 --> 00:02:05.778
A statement that is frequently made with the community that I work with is that your feelings aren't facts.
00:02:05.778 --> 00:02:15.046
They're real, but they're not necessarily the facts of the situation, because four different people can be in the same situation and have four different feelings.
00:02:15.046 --> 00:02:21.991
So your feelings, while they're real to you and we want to teach our children this are not necessarily the facts of the situation.
00:02:21.991 --> 00:02:36.587
And that's where we have to go from our middle limbic brain, which is just a reaction emotion center brain, coming forward to our thinking brain and we have to say is this a real way that we want to feel about this situation?
00:02:38.070 --> 00:02:47.842
School, school can produce a lot of anxiety and a lot of fear, yet it's not something that we specifically need to be fearful and anxious about.
00:02:47.842 --> 00:03:00.040
So as parents, we need to empower our children with a way that they can overcome, push through and find success, regardless of the anxiety and the fear that they're experiencing.
00:03:00.040 --> 00:03:07.854
Psychology Today said reasonable emotions can cloud our ability to judge situations.
00:03:07.854 --> 00:03:13.650
Anxiety about school can be exhausting for both parents and for children.
00:03:13.650 --> 00:03:15.433
It can exhaust us both.
00:03:15.659 --> 00:03:19.007
I know that for me just at the beginning of school.
00:03:19.007 --> 00:03:23.443
As a parent, I'm nervous, I'm excited, I'm ready for them.
00:03:23.443 --> 00:03:24.686
I'm also at the time going.
00:03:24.686 --> 00:03:27.693
I hope they get good teachers, I hope the teacher understands their IEP.
00:03:27.693 --> 00:03:38.230
So I'm going through all these thoughts in my brain and, strangely enough, I've been through school and I'm still experiencing these emotions.
00:03:38.230 --> 00:03:50.181
So I can only imagine, because I don't really remember as a kid all of it, but I do remember sometimes lying in bed the night before school started, sometimes unable to sleep, because I don't really remember as a kid all of it, but I do remember sometimes lying in bed the night before school started, sometimes unable to sleep because I had so many different emotions going in.
00:03:51.084 --> 00:03:59.213
So one of the things I talked about specifically in my first two sessions on anxiety was how important it is as parents that we question correctly.
00:03:59.213 --> 00:04:09.014
So, walking up to our child who's having trouble sleeping the night before or the week leading up to school, we want to say something like, hey, how are you feeling about school starting?
00:04:09.014 --> 00:04:18.588
And let them come out with all the feelings, the excitement, the anxiety, the this, the that, and say I can totally understand.
00:04:18.588 --> 00:04:27.709
I remember when I started school and have a great conversation, then also talk about, hey, I got through it and you will too, and empower them with that hope.
00:04:27.709 --> 00:04:32.071
What we don't wanna say is are you anxious about school?
00:04:32.071 --> 00:04:34.146
Are you scared to go back to school?
00:04:34.146 --> 00:04:39.769
Because what we do when we ask the question that way is we tell them that that's probably a feeling they should be having.
00:04:39.769 --> 00:04:44.528
So that's why it's really important to question children in a particular way.
00:04:44.528 --> 00:04:50.586
Hey, if you've asked those questions before and you're now going, oh man, don't worry about it, you're probably going to do it again.
00:04:50.586 --> 00:04:55.105
I know I still do sometimes, and sometimes, as my kids grow up, I even say you know what?
00:04:55.105 --> 00:04:56.148
I didn't ask that correctly.
00:04:56.148 --> 00:04:58.713
Let me rephrase that, and that's okay.
00:04:58.713 --> 00:05:00.404
That's okay as a parent.
00:05:06.300 --> 00:05:16.348
Maybe they're anxious because they're going to be called on making friends, being teased, room packed with the people I know our high school classes can be up to 30 plus students, whereas some of our elementary school classes 20, 25 students.
00:05:16.348 --> 00:05:26.786
That's still a lot of kids in one room for one adult to be working with, and they can even feel that everyone's looking at them or they can feel that nobody cares about them.
00:05:26.786 --> 00:05:34.208
So you can have these wide range of emotions and every child's going to fall in the middle somewhere and guess what?
00:05:34.208 --> 00:05:36.252
There is fear about being called on.
00:05:36.252 --> 00:05:38.605
There is what if I don't know the answer?
00:05:38.605 --> 00:05:40.891
Or what if I do know the answer and I couldn't get it out.
00:05:40.891 --> 00:05:43.952
So we have to work through strategies on that.
00:05:44.475 --> 00:05:47.228
Maybe they're anxious because of outside of school situations.
00:05:47.228 --> 00:05:49.336
Maybe they have some internal feelings.
00:05:49.336 --> 00:05:55.620
Maybe they're having grief A family member or even a pet passed away recently and I don't want to go back to school.
00:05:55.620 --> 00:05:57.387
I'm still dealing with these emotions.
00:05:57.387 --> 00:06:00.257
Or maybe they have some low self-esteem.
00:06:00.257 --> 00:06:03.064
That's going on and they're unsure of themselves.
00:06:03.064 --> 00:06:10.911
Those are all completely normal and that might impact how they feel about going to school, even though it's actually not about school.
00:06:10.911 --> 00:06:18.473
So helping our children identify that is really critical to helping them processing it too.
00:06:18.473 --> 00:06:21.523
Or maybe they're anxious about their abilities.
00:06:21.523 --> 00:06:37.071
Some of our students that are in our special ed classes and my children know, you know, I've got these areas I'm just not good in, and going to school sometimes highlights for me that I'm not good at it and other people are good at it.
00:06:37.071 --> 00:06:48.511
So they might be anxious because of their own inabilities in a subject area, their struggles with their behavior, their struggles with their behavior, their struggles with their ADHD and ability to pay attention.
00:06:48.511 --> 00:06:50.137
Maybe they have tics.
00:06:50.137 --> 00:06:53.947
Sometimes children with autism or on medications will develop tics.
00:06:53.947 --> 00:07:00.170
So these are all things that they could be nervous about, and I probably didn't even hit all of them.
00:07:00.170 --> 00:07:01.211
In fact I'm sure I didn't.
00:07:01.211 --> 00:07:02.923
So that's just a start.
00:07:03.002 --> 00:07:03.605
So what do we do?
00:07:03.605 --> 00:07:09.831
First and foremost, we want to ask those open-ended questions to help our children articulate what's going on.
00:07:09.831 --> 00:07:21.891
And we may have to continuously dig, because the first time you ask the question we may not get deep enough and your child may not be able to really pinpoint what's going on.
00:07:21.891 --> 00:07:24.627
And it may not be just one situation.
00:07:24.627 --> 00:07:25.951
It could be.
00:07:25.951 --> 00:07:34.064
You know, my cat died three months ago, but now that I'm starting school I don't have my cat to snuggle with and make me feel comfortable.
00:07:34.064 --> 00:07:37.653
So it's actually multiple things that are happening.
00:07:37.653 --> 00:07:42.891
So when we dig deep and dig over time, asking those open-ended questions, we give them an opportunity to process.
00:07:42.891 --> 00:07:45.800
Remember, when we talkended questions, we give them an opportunity to process.
00:07:45.800 --> 00:07:51.567
Remember, when we talk through things, we process them emotionally too, which is why a lot of talk therapy is good.
00:07:51.567 --> 00:07:55.021
So what if my child has a hard time talking about things?
00:07:55.021 --> 00:07:58.107
Exactly right, a lot of kids do.
00:07:58.788 --> 00:08:04.564
Communication is a barrier for a lot of children, so let's find other ways to help them communicate.
00:08:04.564 --> 00:08:08.911
Drawing is a good one, journaling if they can write.
00:08:08.911 --> 00:08:09.954
But if they can write, they can.
00:08:09.954 --> 00:08:16.764
Probably a lot of them can talk, but maybe they don't want to, they're not comfortable yet.
00:08:16.764 --> 00:08:17.507
So journaling might be best.
00:08:17.507 --> 00:08:18.788
But drawing is one way to do it.
00:08:18.788 --> 00:08:26.961
Printing off pictures of different things, allowing them to kind of create a cut and paste collage about how they're feeling about the situation.
00:08:26.961 --> 00:08:37.133
So there's a lot of different ways you can help them express what it is that they're going through, maybe even have them create a song or create a game out of it.
00:08:38.600 --> 00:08:53.727
If you can get your child to just in a way, tell you this is how I'm feeling, even if it's without words, then you can help them process those feelings, and sometimes the processing is just a simple hug from mom and dad and saying I understand completely why you feel that way.
00:08:53.727 --> 00:08:59.427
I also believe that you're going to be okay because it's a safe environment and I'm gonna help you get through this.
00:08:59.427 --> 00:09:06.989
And sometimes that's all they need If they're having trouble getting out of bed to go to school.
00:09:06.989 --> 00:09:13.010
What's hard about that is school is not very good at helping with that problem because they're not there.
00:09:13.010 --> 00:09:16.370
So my child's having trouble getting out of bed in the morning.
00:09:16.919 --> 00:09:22.373
I'm going to tell you right now bribery sometimes is the parent's best weapon tool.
00:09:22.373 --> 00:09:25.945
Bribery can be the best tool.
00:09:25.945 --> 00:09:33.673
Hey, if you want to have your phone, your electronics, if you want to play at Susie's house, if you want to, well, you may have to use it.
00:09:33.673 --> 00:09:41.182
If you want to play with the dog, if you want a piece of gum after school, go get a treat after school, whatever it is.
00:09:41.182 --> 00:09:51.171
If you want me to put a candy in your lunch today, I need you to get up and go, and even sometimes thinking about the whole day is too much, so let's wheel it back.
00:09:51.351 --> 00:09:59.562
Let's say all right, when you get out of bed and go brush your teeth, there's going to be a five minute token for electronics.
00:09:59.562 --> 00:10:02.049
All you have to think about is that I got the token.
00:10:02.049 --> 00:10:07.089
On the back of it's going to be maybe just use poker chips or cards and on the front do five minutes.
00:10:07.089 --> 00:10:10.245
And on the back tape, another piece of paper that says what the next step is.
00:10:10.245 --> 00:10:19.780
And the next step is eat breakfast and at the toaster or wherever it is the plate that they're going to put breakfast on, you have another five minute token.
00:10:19.780 --> 00:10:25.052
So they get five more minutes of electronics time and of course these numbers can be adjusted for your need.
00:10:25.052 --> 00:10:28.567
But then on the back of that it's going to say the next thing.
00:10:28.567 --> 00:10:30.682
So they're not thinking From the minute they get up.
00:10:30.682 --> 00:10:34.206
They're not thinking about the whole day, they're thinking about the next step.
00:10:34.899 --> 00:10:41.926
So when we break down things into steps, sometimes that can help curtail the anxiety of the whole situation and that can really help us out.
00:10:41.926 --> 00:10:49.326
So small issues like that, or big issues, can be broken into small issues by just tackling one thing at a time.
00:10:49.326 --> 00:10:52.692
So step one helping them identify the problem.
00:10:52.692 --> 00:11:02.225
If they can't identify what they're feeling and what's making them feel that way, then we're going to have a hard time helping them push through and resolve it.
00:11:02.225 --> 00:11:10.461
So identifying it by asking the open-ending questions, and then what they're feeling by asking the opening-end questions about their emotions.
00:11:12.004 --> 00:11:14.897
Step two now is focus on what you can control.
00:11:14.897 --> 00:11:17.808
I can control getting up and brushing my teeth.
00:11:17.808 --> 00:11:19.755
I can control eating breakfast.
00:11:19.755 --> 00:11:23.001
I can control getting on the bus.
00:11:23.001 --> 00:11:38.543
When I'm on the bus, I can control where I sit, and that may or may not be a possibility, but if that is a stress, it is something that can be worked out with the school, absolutely something that you can get help with as far as transportation goes.
00:11:38.543 --> 00:11:41.028
So that's where you can start tagging in the school.
00:11:41.028 --> 00:11:47.633
In an area where you as a parent now have to relinquish some control, you can tag in the school to help you out.
00:11:47.633 --> 00:11:50.140
Focus on what you can control.
00:11:50.835 --> 00:11:52.962
Most fear is learned.
00:11:52.962 --> 00:11:57.605
Most fear is not there from the time we're born.
00:11:57.605 --> 00:12:05.822
It is something we learn by watching others or we learn it because of interactions that we have that cause us to feel that way.
00:12:05.822 --> 00:12:10.062
So, since most fear is learned, that means it can be unlearned.
00:12:10.062 --> 00:12:18.345
Now, that does take time, so please take the time to walk your children through this.
00:12:18.345 --> 00:12:24.855
Say, okay, you learned that that was something to be afraid of, but I can tell you right now it is.
00:12:25.698 --> 00:12:34.945
There are, for example, in an elementary school, there are 500 students 300 depending on the elementary school, 500 students who get up and go without the fear.
00:12:34.945 --> 00:12:40.606
Therefore, you can know this is not something you need to be afraid of.
00:12:40.606 --> 00:12:47.268
So, since it's not something you need to be afraid of, it is something we can learn to overcome.
00:12:47.268 --> 00:12:49.620
It is something we can learn to tackle.
00:12:49.620 --> 00:12:56.121
So that's where we start talking about with them the difference between a learned fear and a legitimate fear.
00:12:56.121 --> 00:12:58.788
That actually needs to be something we're afraid of.
00:12:58.788 --> 00:13:02.380
Okay, jumping off a cliff without a bungee cord fearful.
00:13:02.380 --> 00:13:26.669
So we want to build confidence in our children and to do that, they need to know that we believe in them and they need to know that we can help them identify fearful versus non-fearful situations, situations where they're safe versus non-fearful situations, situations where they're safe Maybe they need strategies, but they're safe and situations where it is okay to say, hey, we don't cross the street without looking both ways.
00:13:26.669 --> 00:13:27.951
That's a legitimate fear.
00:13:27.951 --> 00:13:35.134
But we can go to school and overcome the anxiety that comes with some of school.
00:13:35.134 --> 00:13:38.645
So confident kids are capable of taking on more challenges.
00:13:38.645 --> 00:13:49.357
So we have to unlearn the fear that we learned from maybe not being successful in something or having a situation that made us fearful, like bullying.
00:13:49.357 --> 00:13:52.725
I have a couple episodes on bullying.
00:13:52.725 --> 00:14:02.875
So if you have any questions or concerns about bullying with your children, please go to specialparentorg and check that out, because there's a lot of tips and strategies and there are a lot of resources out there for you.
00:14:02.875 --> 00:14:05.860
I've posted several resources on my website also.
00:14:07.583 --> 00:14:09.407
Step three create routines.
00:14:09.407 --> 00:14:17.869
If you have morning routines and after school routines, that's going to help children feel that sense of control.
00:14:17.869 --> 00:14:23.059
That's going to help children feel that sense of control, overcome that fear that they've learned.
00:14:23.059 --> 00:14:25.907
That's upcoming and it's just going to help them, in a sense, have a checkbox to go through the day.
00:14:25.907 --> 00:14:27.799
So, first things, first checklists.
00:14:28.542 --> 00:14:30.125
I do have a checklist for my kids.
00:14:30.125 --> 00:14:46.466
In the morning we have a binder and it's just a really thin binder because we don't put a lot of papers in it, but on one side of it it says good morning and there's a checklist for each child, because I have three kids in three very different situations in life and they have to do different things in the morning.
00:14:46.466 --> 00:14:49.221
Of course, your basics brush your teeth, put deodorant on.
00:14:49.221 --> 00:14:53.655
I have boys Brush your teeth, put your deodorant on.
00:14:53.655 --> 00:14:55.960
Those basic things are still there.
00:14:55.960 --> 00:15:01.850
But then there's also some things like one of my children makes lunch every day, the other one doesn't.
00:15:01.850 --> 00:15:04.123
So make lunch is on one list but not on the other.
00:15:04.123 --> 00:15:10.384
Not all three of my children take medication, so take meds is on some of the lists, not on all the lists.
00:15:11.816 --> 00:15:13.503
I have another checklist for the afternoon.
00:15:13.503 --> 00:15:22.485
It says good afternoon or you could even have it say welcome home or so glad you're here, and then it has a checklist when you walk in the door you're going to do the following items.
00:15:22.485 --> 00:15:33.472
It doesn't mean that I'm not there for them while they're doing them, but it gives them a sense of power and control and a sense of especially if they have ADHD hey, I can do this.
00:15:33.472 --> 00:15:36.038
It teaches them a strategy that's useful for life.
00:15:36.038 --> 00:15:38.344
So create checklists for them.
00:15:39.125 --> 00:15:50.600
Create time trackers, those countdown timers where when you turn them on for 10 minutes, it actually has the red shrink and that helps them visually go.
00:15:50.600 --> 00:15:52.004
Oh, I don't have much time left.
00:15:52.004 --> 00:16:04.461
I got to keep going Because, especially with children with ADHD, which kind of couples with autism a lot of times, keeping track of time, you're just fighting a battle You're not going to win.
00:16:04.461 --> 00:16:11.187
You need to give them strategies and so to reduce the headaches and the stress for everybody in the house, let's develop those.
00:16:11.187 --> 00:16:16.495
My special guest on a previous episode when we talked about going back to school Miss Shauna Fox.
00:16:16.495 --> 00:16:27.864
She talked about how, for her, having ADHD as an adult, she has a playlist that the songs are specifically five minutes long, so she knows that if she has 10 minutes left, she hits the playlist.
00:16:27.864 --> 00:16:36.981
She only has two songs and by the time two songs are done, she needs to be ready, and that helps her through it because for her, the songs and the music are very motivating for her.
00:16:36.981 --> 00:16:47.499
So find time trackers, ways for your children to be more cognizant of the passage of time, and this is also a strategy they can use as an adult.
00:16:47.499 --> 00:16:49.803
So some sort of timer or countdown.
00:16:51.187 --> 00:16:52.168
Focus on the positive.
00:16:52.168 --> 00:16:57.606
We want to help our children in the morning, especially when they're getting ready for school.
00:16:57.606 --> 00:16:58.899
Focus on the things that are going really well.
00:16:58.899 --> 00:16:59.364
Good morning morning, especially when they're getting ready for school.
00:16:59.364 --> 00:17:00.986
Focus on the things that are going really well.
00:17:00.986 --> 00:17:04.856
Good morning, staying energized If they're oh, it's already a bad morning.
00:17:04.856 --> 00:17:06.099
This has happened.
00:17:06.099 --> 00:17:07.021
Or I dropped this.
00:17:07.021 --> 00:17:12.240
One morning it was I dropped my toothbrush in the toilet and the whole.
00:17:12.240 --> 00:17:16.376
You can imagine the day was going to be the worst day in the world.
00:17:16.376 --> 00:17:22.173
Now, well, we had a backup toothbrush so it was okay, but at the very least I was like you can finger brush your teeth.
00:17:22.173 --> 00:17:39.199
I'll buy you a toothbrush after school and we can focus on the positive and we can turn it into a fun and light environment, helping them overcome little tiny things like that, the things that sometimes can seem like they're going to completely derail a whole day.
00:17:40.101 --> 00:17:47.743
If you manage those with them, if you're sitting there and just keeping things positive, they're going to learn that behavior.
00:17:47.743 --> 00:17:56.396
They're going to learn that they don't need to be stressed and they don't need to have fear, that they can handle it with a good sense of humor and a positive attitude.
00:17:56.396 --> 00:18:03.226
I kind of talked about this earlier, thinking about the next steps in the morning routine, not the whole morning, not the whole day.
00:18:03.226 --> 00:18:07.285
So breaking it down into next steps for them can be really helpful too.
00:18:07.285 --> 00:18:15.857
All right, next thing is to teach problem solving skills for when they are away from you and they need to start critically thinking through things.
00:18:15.857 --> 00:18:17.622
So problem solving skills.
00:18:17.622 --> 00:18:22.130
Again, the bullying situation I have two whole episodes on bullying.
00:18:22.130 --> 00:18:33.714
So go to specialparentorg and talk about bullying there, and there's also on my website several different tips, tricks and website resources for you.
00:18:34.855 --> 00:18:36.057
But how do we handle things?
00:18:36.057 --> 00:18:38.779
How do we handle test anxiety?
00:18:38.779 --> 00:18:48.528
Well, okay, let's talk about it and you might even say here's a real world skill, let's Google it together, test anxiety and let's read some stuff together.
00:18:48.528 --> 00:18:49.829
Oh, that one's not going to work for you.
00:18:49.829 --> 00:18:51.711
Oh, that sounds like a good idea I never thought of.
00:18:51.711 --> 00:18:54.797
And go through that with them when they're younger.
00:18:54.797 --> 00:19:01.306
It's not so much usually test anxiety, but it might be more like my friends didn't want to sit with me at lunch yesterday.
00:19:01.306 --> 00:19:03.229
That's a legitimate.
00:19:03.229 --> 00:19:04.711
That hurts man.
00:19:04.711 --> 00:19:07.161
That's going to whoop right in the child's little heart.
00:19:07.882 --> 00:19:11.440
So, as a parent, what you can do is you can help them come up with a strategy.
00:19:11.440 --> 00:19:17.019
First of all, listen, hear out all the emotions, understand that that pain is real.
00:19:17.019 --> 00:19:22.988
That's a pain of rejection and you have to help them know that that's going to happen again in life.
00:19:22.988 --> 00:19:27.221
So we need to have a way to handle it and talk them through the situation.
00:19:27.221 --> 00:19:28.864
Who can they sit with?
00:19:28.864 --> 00:19:32.857
What kind of situations can they come up with at school as far as.
00:19:32.857 --> 00:19:35.564
Are there any other places to eat lunch?
00:19:35.564 --> 00:19:38.198
And it's so individualized.
00:19:38.198 --> 00:19:51.380
I'm not going to give you a million different options here, but I would suggest that, even if you just looked it up online with them, they can, or for yourself to show them, and then maybe even create like cut out printed pictures.
00:19:51.380 --> 00:20:01.084
If they're struggling to communicate with you on that, you can have cut out printed pictures for them to use to help understand what it is that we need to do.
00:20:01.084 --> 00:20:03.736
We're going to do step one, then step two, then step three.
00:20:03.736 --> 00:20:15.599
If this happens, we're going to do this and we're going to go talk to our teacher, we're going to go talk to our counselor, we're going to go outside in the playground and sit in a different place.
00:20:15.599 --> 00:20:19.164
So that way we can maybe just observe.
00:20:20.607 --> 00:20:30.936
One thing that I think is hard for children heck, it's hard for adults is the understanding that sometimes being alone is not the same as being lonely.
00:20:30.936 --> 00:20:38.680
And I do have an episode where I talked with Annie about the difference of being alone versus being lonely.
00:20:38.680 --> 00:20:47.818
And sometimes, when we deal with rejection at school, especially because mom and dad aren't there to help lift us up, we have to give them strategies.
00:20:47.818 --> 00:20:54.980
Maybe we're going to give them mantras that they can repeat you know, I am beautiful, I am loved, I am strong.
00:20:54.980 --> 00:21:02.798
Maybe we're going to give them something to look at, a picture of our family and how much we all love each other and we care for each other.
00:21:02.798 --> 00:21:15.873
But while they're dealing with that, we also have to teach them sometimes it's okay to be alone, because to be alone is an opportunity for connection that wouldn't have been there if I was with those other friends.
00:21:15.873 --> 00:21:24.790
And that's hard to teach, it's harder to walk through, but it's a real life skill because we have to admit, even as adults, it still happens.
00:21:25.980 --> 00:21:31.423
So, teaching them that these are real world problems that they are going to tackle again and again and again.
00:21:31.423 --> 00:21:38.284
So we need to provide them with real world strategies and ways to handle the situation that are positive.
00:21:38.284 --> 00:21:42.173
Not getting angry not how dare those friends not like you.
00:21:42.173 --> 00:21:47.347
Not blaming, because that doesn't lead to healing.
00:21:47.347 --> 00:21:59.022
What we want to do is we want to teach them how to work through bullying, rejection, fears of test, anxiety, fears of not being successful, because they're going to have times.
00:21:59.022 --> 00:21:59.964
They're not successful.
00:21:59.964 --> 00:22:02.791
We're not 100% successful in everything that we do.
00:22:02.791 --> 00:22:06.529
If we are, then we're being too choosy and we're not taking enough risk.
00:22:06.529 --> 00:22:08.505
It's good to take risk.
00:22:08.505 --> 00:22:11.185
It's good to fall down sometimes.
00:22:11.185 --> 00:22:15.260
We're going to learn from that, so we want to teach them to walk through that.
00:22:16.463 --> 00:22:22.520
Finally, we have to differentiate between what is a real fear and what might be an exaggerated fear.
00:22:22.520 --> 00:22:27.031
So, for example, sometimes fears are attention seeking.
00:22:27.031 --> 00:22:32.946
For example, mom, can you check the closet one more time or can you bring me back a cup of water?
00:22:32.946 --> 00:22:39.462
When that starts happening a lot, then it's really attention seeking.
00:22:39.462 --> 00:22:44.726
It's wanting you to stay around, and sometimes we need to say, okay, they need some attention in another.
00:22:44.726 --> 00:22:49.006
Maybe they need some special mom and dad time, or mom just time or dad just time.
00:22:49.006 --> 00:22:55.945
Maybe we need to sit down with them in a different situation, not in that moment, because we're not going to give in to that fear, anxiety.
00:22:55.945 --> 00:23:03.842
We need to sit down with them in a different time and take them out to lunch, take them to the park, whatever it is, spend some extra quality time with them.
00:23:05.324 --> 00:23:14.988
Another one is is there fear due to a perceived trauma and I'm very careful when I use this because I am a trauma therapist perceived trauma versus real trauma.
00:23:14.988 --> 00:23:25.241
The difference really is is that we can take a situation that wasn't traumatic and make it traumatic by how we choose to think about it.
00:23:25.241 --> 00:23:37.227
So if everyone was in this situation and everything was fine, but one person felt, oh my gosh, and it's just having this huge emotional reaction, we have to, in a sense, not dive into that.
00:23:37.227 --> 00:23:39.511
We have to simply say I get why you're feeling that way.
00:23:39.511 --> 00:23:43.287
Now your feelings are not facts.
00:23:43.287 --> 00:23:45.112
Let's re-examine the situation.
00:23:45.112 --> 00:24:01.008
Versus a real trauma the death of a family member, a pet, something, maybe a natural disaster that took place, a tornado wiping out your house that's a real trauma and that can impact going back to school.
00:24:01.008 --> 00:24:03.814
That can impact the way we feel about any situation.
00:24:03.814 --> 00:24:24.007
So what we want to do is we want to differentiate real fears versus kind of those exaggerated ones that are maybe attention seeking or exaggerated because they're not understanding a situation, they're just having a reaction to it, versus a real one that requires extra help, extra support from either a professional, mom, dad, etc.
00:24:25.848 --> 00:24:32.375
Our goal as parents is slow, controlled exposure with a plan.
00:24:32.375 --> 00:24:35.560
A little fear kept in check can be useful.
00:24:35.560 --> 00:24:37.665
I gave the example in my last one.
00:24:37.665 --> 00:24:43.126
If you're driving in ice or snow, it's good to have a little bit of fear to keep you safe, to keep you in check.
00:24:43.126 --> 00:24:49.592
You want your children to have a little bit of fear when talking to strangers, because that keeps them safe.
00:24:49.592 --> 00:24:53.130
It keeps them in the back of their brain going is this a good situation?
00:24:53.130 --> 00:25:02.030
But we also don't want them to be so fearful that they won't leave the house or that they don't have the self-confidence to introduce themselves to mom or dad's friend who they're talking to.
00:25:02.030 --> 00:25:08.472
So that little bit of fear we want to have them have slow, controlled exposure with a plan.
00:25:08.472 --> 00:25:21.173
Little bit of fear we want to have them have slow, controlled exposure with a plan, and that's going to help them overcome anxiety, overcome fear, build self-confidence because now they know mom and dad believe that I can do this Become self-assured of their inner strength.
00:25:21.173 --> 00:25:28.526
That is our goal becoming self-assured of their inner strength, because someday they're going to have to rely on themselves for something.
00:25:28.526 --> 00:25:33.028
We're not going to be there and we want to teach them how to do that.
00:25:33.189 --> 00:25:34.432
Next one, anxiety.
00:25:34.432 --> 00:25:37.645
Part four, our last one, is going to be all about coping strategies.
00:25:37.645 --> 00:25:39.391
So please tune in for that.
00:25:39.391 --> 00:25:44.530
Remember mom, dad, parents this isn't easy to navigate.
00:25:44.530 --> 00:25:45.755
It's going to take time.
00:25:45.755 --> 00:25:49.961
It might become exhausting for you at times and that's totally normal.
00:25:49.961 --> 00:25:52.006
So use your own coping strategies.
00:25:52.006 --> 00:25:58.128
But above all else, you're strong, you're capable and you've got this.
00:25:58.128 --> 00:26:01.460
This program is made possible by friends and partners of the Special Parent Podcast.

Has your child ever felt anxious about attending school?
00:00:42.601 --> 00:00:44.612
I know my children have.
00:00:44.612 --> 00:00:47.722
Hi everyone, and welcome to the Special Parent Podcast.
00:00:47.722 --> 00:00:49.225
I'm Dr Deanna Iverson.
00:00:49.927 --> 00:00:57.112
Today we're continuing our talks about fear and anxiety in our children, and some of this can even be applied to ourselves.
00:00:57.112 --> 00:01:09.367
So today, specifically talking about going back to school, I had a special guest and we did a couple episodes actually on back to school tips, tricks, especially for special needs parents.
00:01:09.367 --> 00:01:13.302
So Shauna Fox and I have a three-part series that is already posted.
00:01:13.302 --> 00:01:17.903
So if you haven't had a chance to go to specialparentorg and check that out, I highly recommend it.
00:01:17.903 --> 00:01:21.111
Even if you're into the school year, it's still a good way.
00:01:21.111 --> 00:01:25.965
Maybe it can help kind of rewrite a rocky ship or help you with that second semester start.
00:01:27.468 --> 00:01:30.212
Our goal as parents is to empower our children.
00:01:30.212 --> 00:01:39.013
We want to help our children navigate the emotions that they're going to experience Anxiety and fear are normal.
00:01:39.013 --> 00:01:40.924
In fact, all of our emotions are normal.
00:01:40.924 --> 00:01:46.001
They're all part of our everyday life, our everyday experience as human beings.
00:01:46.001 --> 00:01:49.531
It's how we navigate these emotions that's key.
00:01:49.531 --> 00:01:54.804
It's critical to our success as adults and our success in our relationships.
00:01:54.804 --> 00:01:58.209
So emotions happen to us.
00:01:58.209 --> 00:02:05.778
A statement that is frequently made with the community that I work with is that your feelings aren't facts.
00:02:05.778 --> 00:02:15.046
They're real, but they're not necessarily the facts of the situation, because four different people can be in the same situation and have four different feelings.
00:02:15.046 --> 00:02:21.991
So your feelings, while they're real to you and we want to teach our children this are not necessarily the facts of the situation.
00:02:21.991 --> 00:02:36.587
And that's where we have to go from our middle limbic brain, which is just a reaction emotion center brain, coming forward to our thinking brain and we have to say is this a real way that we want to feel about this situation?
00:02:38.070 --> 00:02:47.842
School, school can produce a lot of anxiety and a lot of fear, yet it's not something that we specifically need to be fearful and anxious about.
00:02:47.842 --> 00:03:00.040
So as parents, we need to empower our children with a way that they can overcome, push through and find success, regardless of the anxiety and the fear that they're experiencing.
00:03:00.040 --> 00:03:07.854
Psychology Today said reasonable emotions can cloud our ability to judge situations.
00:03:07.854 --> 00:03:13.650
Anxiety about school can be exhausting for both parents and for children.
00:03:13.650 --> 00:03:15.433
It can exhaust us both.
00:03:15.659 --> 00:03:19.007
I know that for me just at the beginning of school.
00:03:19.007 --> 00:03:23.443
As a parent, I'm nervous, I'm excited, I'm ready for them.
00:03:23.443 --> 00:03:24.686
I'm also at the time going.
00:03:24.686 --> 00:03:27.693
I hope they get good teachers, I hope the teacher understands their IEP.
00:03:27.693 --> 00:03:38.230
So I'm going through all these thoughts in my brain and, strangely enough, I've been through school and I'm still experiencing these emotions.
00:03:38.230 --> 00:03:50.181
00:03:51.084 --> 00:03:59.213
So one of the things I talked about specifically in my first two sessions on anxiety was how important it is as parents that we question correctly.
00:03:59.213 --> 00:04:09.014
So, walking up to our child who's having trouble sleeping the night before or the week leading up to school, we want to say something like, hey, how are you feeling about school starting?
00:04:09.014 --> 00:04:18.588
And let them come out with all the feelings, the excitement, the anxiety, the this, the that, and say I can totally understand.
00:04:18.588 --> 00:04:27.709
I remember when I started school and have a great conversation, then also talk about, hey, I got through it and you will too, and empower them with that hope.
00:04:27.709 --> 00:04:32.071
What we don't wanna say is are you anxious about school?
00:04:32.071 --> 00:04:34.146
Are you scared to go back to school?
00:04:34.146 --> 00:04:39.769
Because what we do when we ask the question that way is we tell them that that's probably a feeling they should be having.
00:04:39.769 --> 00:04:44.528
So that's why it's really important to question children in a particular way.
00:04:44.528 --> 00:04:50.586
Hey, if you've asked those questions before and you're now going, oh man, don't worry about it, you're probably going to do it again.
00:04:50.586 --> 00:04:55.105
I know I still do sometimes, and sometimes, as my kids grow up, I even say you know what?
00:04:55.105 --> 00:04:56.148
I didn't ask that correctly.
00:04:56.148 --> 00:04:58.713
Let me rephrase that, and that's okay.
00:04:58.713 --> 00:05:00.404
That's okay as a parent.
00:05:06.300 --> 00:05:16.348
Maybe they're anxious because they're going to be called on making friends, being teased, room packed with the people I know our high school classes can be up to 30 plus students, whereas some of our elementary school classes 20, 25 students.
00:05:16.348 --> 00:05:26.786
That's still a lot of kids in one room for one adult to be working with, and they can even feel that everyone's looking at them or they can feel that nobody cares about them.
00:05:26.786 --> 00:05:34.208
So you can have these wide range of emotions and every child's going to fall in the middle somewhere and guess what?
00:05:34.208 --> 00:05:36.252
There is fear about being called on.
00:05:36.252 --> 00:05:38.605
There is what if I don't know the answer?
00:05:38.605 --> 00:05:40.891
Or what if I do know the answer and I couldn't get it out.
00:05:40.891 --> 00:05:43.952
So we have to work through strategies on that.
00:05:44.475 --> 00:05:47.228
Maybe they're anxious because of outside of school situations.
00:05:47.228 --> 00:05:49.336
Maybe they have some internal feelings.
00:05:49.336 --> 00:05:55.620
Maybe they're having grief A family member or even a pet passed away recently and I don't want to go back to school.
00:05:55.620 --> 00:05:57.387
I'm still dealing with these emotions.
00:05:57.387 --> 00:06:00.257
Or maybe they have some low self-esteem.
00:06:00.257 --> 00:06:03.064
That's going on and they're unsure of themselves.
00:06:03.064 --> 00:06:10.911
Those are all completely normal and that might impact how they feel about going to school, even though it's actually not about school.
00:06:10.911 --> 00:06:18.473
So helping our children identify that is really critical to helping them processing it too.
00:06:18.473 --> 00:06:21.523
Or maybe they're anxious about their abilities.
00:06:21.523 --> 00:06:37.071
Some of our students that are in our special ed classes and my children know, you know, I've got these areas I'm just not good in, and going to school sometimes highlights for me that I'm not good at it and other people are good at it.
00:06:37.071 --> 00:06:48.511
So they might be anxious because of their own inabilities in a subject area, their struggles with their behavior, their struggles with their behavior, their struggles with their ADHD and ability to pay attention.
00:06:48.511 --> 00:06:50.137
Maybe they have tics.
00:06:50.137 --> 00:06:53.947
Sometimes children with autism or on medications will develop tics.
00:06:53.947 --> 00:07:00.170
So these are all things that they could be nervous about, and I probably didn't even hit all of them.
00:07:00.170 --> 00:07:01.211
In fact I'm sure I didn't.
00:07:01.211 --> 00:07:02.923
So that's just a start.
00:07:03.002 --> 00:07:03.605
So what do we do?
00:07:03.605 --> 00:07:09.831
First and foremost, we want to ask those open-ended questions to help our children articulate what's going on.
00:07:09.831 --> 00:07:21.891
And we may have to continuously dig, because the first time you ask the question we may not get deep enough and your child may not be able to really pinpoint what's going on.
00:07:21.891 --> 00:07:24.627
And it may not be just one situation.
00:07:24.627 --> 00:07:25.951
It could be.
00:07:25.951 --> 00:07:34.064
You know, my cat died three months ago, but now that I'm starting school I don't have my cat to snuggle with and make me feel comfortable.
00:07:34.064 --> 00:07:37.653
So it's actually multiple things that are happening.
00:07:37.653 --> 00:07:42.891
So when we dig deep and dig over time, asking those open-ended questions, we give them an opportunity to process.
00:07:42.891 --> 00:07:45.800
Remember, when we talkended questions, we give them an opportunity to process.
00:07:45.800 --> 00:07:51.567
Remember, when we talk through things, we process them emotionally too, which is why a lot of talk therapy is good.
00:07:51.567 --> 00:07:55.021
So what if my child has a hard time talking about things?
00:07:55.021 --> 00:07:58.107
Exactly right, a lot of kids do.
00:07:58.788 --> 00:08:04.564
Communication is a barrier for a lot of children, so let's find other ways to help them communicate.
00:08:04.564 --> 00:08:08.911
Drawing is a good one, journaling if they can write.
00:08:08.911 --> 00:08:09.954
But if they can write, they can.
00:08:09.954 --> 00:08:16.764
Probably a lot of them can talk, but maybe they don't want to, they're not comfortable yet.
00:08:16.764 --> 00:08:17.507
So journaling might be best.
00:08:17.507 --> 00:08:18.788
But drawing is one way to do it.
00:08:18.788 --> 00:08:26.961
Printing off pictures of different things, allowing them to kind of create a cut and paste collage about how they're feeling about the situation.
00:08:26.961 --> 00:08:37.133
So there's a lot of different ways you can help them express what it is that they're going through, maybe even have them create a song or create a game out of it.
00:08:38.600 --> 00:08:53.727
If you can get your child to just in a way, tell you this is how I'm feeling, even if it's without words, then you can help them process those feelings, and sometimes the processing is just a simple hug from mom and dad and saying I understand completely why you feel that way.
00:08:53.727 --> 00:08:59.427
I also believe that you're going to be okay because it's a safe environment and I'm gonna help you get through this.
00:08:59.427 --> 00:09:06.989
And sometimes that's all they need If they're having trouble getting out of bed to go to school.
00:09:06.989 --> 00:09:13.010
What's hard about that is school is not very good at helping with that problem because they're not there.
00:09:13.010 --> 00:09:16.370
So my child's having trouble getting out of bed in the morning.
00:09:16.919 --> 00:09:22.373
I'm going to tell you right now bribery sometimes is the parent's best weapon tool.
00:09:22.373 --> 00:09:25.945
Bribery can be the best tool.
00:09:25.945 --> 00:09:33.673
Hey, if you want to have your phone, your electronics, if you want to play at Susie's house, if you want to, well, you may have to use it.
00:09:33.673 --> 00:09:41.182
If you want to play with the dog, if you want a piece of gum after school, go get a treat after school, whatever it is.
00:09:41.182 --> 00:09:51.171
If you want me to put a candy in your lunch today, I need you to get up and go, and even sometimes thinking about the whole day is too much, so let's wheel it back.
00:09:51.351 --> 00:09:59.562
Let's say all right, when you get out of bed and go brush your teeth, there's going to be a five minute token for electronics.
00:09:59.562 --> 00:10:02.049
All you have to think about is that I got the token.
00:10:02.049 --> 00:10:07.089
On the back of it's going to be maybe just use poker chips or cards and on the front do five minutes.
00:10:07.089 --> 00:10:10.245
And on the back tape, another piece of paper that says what the next step is.
00:10:10.245 --> 00:10:19.780
And the next step is eat breakfast and at the toaster or wherever it is the plate that they're going to put breakfast on, you have another five minute token.
00:10:19.780 --> 00:10:25.052
So they get five more minutes of electronics time and of course these numbers can be adjusted for your need.
00:10:25.052 --> 00:10:28.567
But then on the back of that it's going to say the next thing.
00:10:28.567 --> 00:10:30.682
So they're not thinking From the minute they get up.
00:10:30.682 --> 00:10:34.206
They're not thinking about the whole day, they're thinking about the next step.
00:10:34.899 --> 00:10:41.926
So when we break down things into steps, sometimes that can help curtail the anxiety of the whole situation and that can really help us out.
00:10:41.926 --> 00:10:49.326
So small issues like that, or big issues, can be broken into small issues by just tackling one thing at a time.
00:10:49.326 --> 00:10:52.692
So step one helping them identify the problem.
00:10:52.692 --> 00:11:02.225
If they can't identify what they're feeling and what's making them feel that way, then we're going to have a hard time helping them push through and resolve it.
00:11:02.225 --> 00:11:10.461
So identifying it by asking the open-ending questions, and then what they're feeling by asking the opening-end questions about their emotions.
00:11:12.004 --> 00:11:14.897
Step two now is focus on what you can control.
00:11:14.897 --> 00:11:17.808
I can control getting up and brushing my teeth.
00:11:17.808 --> 00:11:19.755
I can control eating breakfast.
00:11:19.755 --> 00:11:23.001
I can control getting on the bus.
00:11:23.001 --> 00:11:38.543
When I'm on the bus, I can control where I sit, and that may or may not be a possibility, but if that is a stress, it is something that can be worked out with the school, absolutely something that you can get help with as far as transportation goes.
00:11:38.543 --> 00:11:41.028
So that's where you can start tagging in the school.
00:11:41.028 --> 00:11:47.633
In an area where you as a parent now have to relinquish some control, you can tag in the school to help you out.
00:11:47.633 --> 00:11:50.140
Focus on what you can control.
00:11:50.835 --> 00:11:52.962
Most fear is learned.
00:11:52.962 --> 00:11:57.605
Most fear is not there from the time we're born.
00:11:57.605 --> 00:12:05.822
It is something we learn by watching others or we learn it because of interactions that we have that cause us to feel that way.
00:12:05.822 --> 00:12:10.062
So, since most fear is learned, that means it can be unlearned.
00:12:10.062 --> 00:12:18.345
Now, that does take time, so please take the time to walk your children through this.
00:12:18.345 --> 00:12:24.855
Say, okay, you learned that that was something to be afraid of, but I can tell you right now it is.
00:12:25.698 --> 00:12:34.945
There are, for example, in an elementary school, there are 500 students 300 depending on the elementary school, 500 students who get up and go without the fear.
00:12:34.945 --> 00:12:40.606
Therefore, you can know this is not something you need to be afraid of.
00:12:40.606 --> 00:12:47.268
So, since it's not something you need to be afraid of, it is something we can learn to overcome.
00:12:47.268 --> 00:12:49.620
It is something we can learn to tackle.
00:12:49.620 --> 00:12:56.121
So that's where we start talking about with them the difference between a learned fear and a legitimate fear.
00:12:56.121 --> 00:12:58.788
That actually needs to be something we're afraid of.
00:12:58.788 --> 00:13:02.380
Okay, jumping off a cliff without a bungee cord fearful.
00:13:02.380 --> 00:13:26.669
00:13:26.669 --> 00:13:27.951
That's a legitimate fear.
00:13:27.951 --> 00:13:35.134
But we can go to school and overcome the anxiety that comes with some of school.
00:13:35.134 --> 00:13:38.645
So confident kids are capable of taking on more challenges.
00:13:38.645 --> 00:13:49.357
So we have to unlearn the fear that we learned from maybe not being successful in something or having a situation that made us fearful, like bullying.
00:13:49.357 --> 00:13:52.725
I have a couple episodes on bullying.
00:13:52.725 --> 00:14:02.875
So if you have any questions or concerns about bullying with your children, please go to specialparentorg and check that out, because there's a lot of tips and strategies and there are a lot of resources out there for you.
00:14:02.875 --> 00:14:05.860
I've posted several resources on my website also.
00:14:07.583 --> 00:14:09.407
Step three create routines.
00:14:09.407 --> 00:14:17.869
If you have morning routines and after school routines, that's going to help children feel that sense of control.
00:14:17.869 --> 00:14:23.059
That's going to help children feel that sense of control, overcome that fear that they've learned.
00:14:23.059 --> 00:14:25.907
That's upcoming and it's just going to help them, in a sense, have a checkbox to go through the day.
00:14:25.907 --> 00:14:27.799
So, first things, first checklists.
00:14:28.542 --> 00:14:30.125
I do have a checklist for my kids.
00:14:30.125 --> 00:14:46.466
In the morning we have a binder and it's just a really thin binder because we don't put a lot of papers in it, but on one side of it it says good morning and there's a checklist for each child, because I have three kids in three very different situations in life and they have to do different things in the morning.
00:14:46.466 --> 00:14:49.221
Of course, your basics brush your teeth, put deodorant on.
00:14:49.221 --> 00:14:53.655
I have boys Brush your teeth, put your deodorant on.
00:14:53.655 --> 00:14:55.960
Those basic things are still there.
00:14:55.960 --> 00:15:01.850
But then there's also some things like one of my children makes lunch every day, the other one doesn't.
00:15:01.850 --> 00:15:04.123
So make lunch is on one list but not on the other.
00:15:04.123 --> 00:15:10.384
Not all three of my children take medication, so take meds is on some of the lists, not on all the lists.
00:15:11.816 --> 00:15:13.503
I have another checklist for the afternoon.
00:15:13.503 --> 00:15:22.485
It says good afternoon or you could even have it say welcome home or so glad you're here, and then it has a checklist when you walk in the door you're going to do the following items.
00:15:22.485 --> 00:15:33.472
It doesn't mean that I'm not there for them while they're doing them, but it gives them a sense of power and control and a sense of especially if they have ADHD hey, I can do this.
00:15:33.472 --> 00:15:36.038
It teaches them a strategy that's useful for life.
00:15:36.038 --> 00:15:38.344
So create checklists for them.
00:15:39.125 --> 00:15:50.600
Create time trackers, those countdown timers where when you turn them on for 10 minutes, it actually has the red shrink and that helps them visually go.
00:15:50.600 --> 00:15:52.004
Oh, I don't have much time left.
00:15:52.004 --> 00:16:04.461
I got to keep going Because, especially with children with ADHD, which kind of couples with autism a lot of times, keeping track of time, you're just fighting a battle You're not going to win.
00:16:04.461 --> 00:16:11.187
You need to give them strategies and so to reduce the headaches and the stress for everybody in the house, let's develop those.
00:16:11.187 --> 00:16:16.495
My special guest on a previous episode when we talked about going back to school Miss Shauna Fox.
00:16:16.495 --> 00:16:27.864
She talked about how, for her, having ADHD as an adult, she has a playlist that the songs are specifically five minutes long, so she knows that if she has 10 minutes left, she hits the playlist.
00:16:27.864 --> 00:16:36.981
She only has two songs and by the time two songs are done, she needs to be ready, and that helps her through it because for her, the songs and the music are very motivating for her.
00:16:36.981 --> 00:16:47.499
So find time trackers, ways for your children to be more cognizant of the passage of time, and this is also a strategy they can use as an adult.
00:16:47.499 --> 00:16:49.803
So some sort of timer or countdown.
00:16:51.187 --> 00:16:52.168
Focus on the positive.
00:16:52.168 --> 00:16:57.606
We want to help our children in the morning, especially when they're getting ready for school.
00:16:57.606 --> 00:16:58.899
Focus on the things that are going really well.
00:16:58.899 --> 00:16:59.364
Good morning morning, especially when they're getting ready for school.
00:16:59.364 --> 00:17:00.986
Focus on the things that are going really well.
00:17:00.986 --> 00:17:04.856
Good morning, staying energized If they're oh, it's already a bad morning.
00:17:04.856 --> 00:17:06.099
This has happened.
00:17:06.099 --> 00:17:07.021
Or I dropped this.
00:17:07.021 --> 00:17:12.240
One morning it was I dropped my toothbrush in the toilet and the whole.
00:17:12.240 --> 00:17:16.376
You can imagine the day was going to be the worst day in the world.
00:17:16.376 --> 00:17:22.173
Now, well, we had a backup toothbrush so it was okay, but at the very least I was like you can finger brush your teeth.
00:17:22.173 --> 00:17:39.199
I'll buy you a toothbrush after school and we can focus on the positive and we can turn it into a fun and light environment, helping them overcome little tiny things like that, the things that sometimes can seem like they're going to completely derail a whole day.
00:17:40.101 --> 00:17:47.743
If you manage those with them, if you're sitting there and just keeping things positive, they're going to learn that behavior.
00:17:47.743 --> 00:17:56.396
They're going to learn that they don't need to be stressed and they don't need to have fear, that they can handle it with a good sense of humor and a positive attitude.
00:17:56.396 --> 00:18:03.226
I kind of talked about this earlier, thinking about the next steps in the morning routine, not the whole morning, not the whole day.
00:18:03.226 --> 00:18:07.285
So breaking it down into next steps for them can be really helpful too.
00:18:07.285 --> 00:18:15.857
All right, next thing is to teach problem solving skills for when they are away from you and they need to start critically thinking through things.
00:18:15.857 --> 00:18:17.622
So problem solving skills.
00:18:17.622 --> 00:18:22.130
Again, the bullying situation I have two whole episodes on bullying.
00:18:22.130 --> 00:18:33.714
So go to specialparentorg and talk about bullying there, and there's also on my website several different tips, tricks and website resources for you.
00:18:34.855 --> 00:18:36.057
But how do we handle things?
00:18:36.057 --> 00:18:38.779
How do we handle test anxiety?
00:18:38.779 --> 00:18:48.528
Well, okay, let's talk about it and you might even say here's a real world skill, let's Google it together, test anxiety and let's read some stuff together.
00:18:48.528 --> 00:18:49.829
Oh, that one's not going to work for you.
00:18:49.829 --> 00:18:51.711
Oh, that sounds like a good idea I never thought of.
00:18:51.711 --> 00:18:54.797
And go through that with them when they're younger.
00:18:54.797 --> 00:19:01.306
It's not so much usually test anxiety, but it might be more like my friends didn't want to sit with me at lunch yesterday.
00:19:01.306 --> 00:19:03.229
That's a legitimate.
00:19:03.229 --> 00:19:04.711
That hurts man.
00:19:04.711 --> 00:19:07.161
That's going to whoop right in the child's little heart.
00:19:07.882 --> 00:19:11.440
So, as a parent, what you can do is you can help them come up with a strategy.
00:19:11.440 --> 00:19:17.019
First of all, listen, hear out all the emotions, understand that that pain is real.
00:19:17.019 --> 00:19:22.988
That's a pain of rejection and you have to help them know that that's going to happen again in life.
00:19:22.988 --> 00:19:27.221
So we need to have a way to handle it and talk them through the situation.
00:19:27.221 --> 00:19:28.864
Who can they sit with?
00:19:28.864 --> 00:19:32.857
What kind of situations can they come up with at school as far as.
00:19:32.857 --> 00:19:35.564
Are there any other places to eat lunch?
00:19:35.564 --> 00:19:38.198
And it's so individualized.
00:19:38.198 --> 00:19:51.380
I'm not going to give you a million different options here, but I would suggest that, even if you just looked it up online with them, they can, or for yourself to show them, and then maybe even create like cut out printed pictures.
00:19:51.380 --> 00:20:01.084
If they're struggling to communicate with you on that, you can have cut out printed pictures for them to use to help understand what it is that we need to do.
00:20:01.084 --> 00:20:03.736
We're going to do step one, then step two, then step three.
00:20:03.736 --> 00:20:15.599
If this happens, we're going to do this and we're going to go talk to our teacher, we're going to go talk to our counselor, we're going to go outside in the playground and sit in a different place.
00:20:15.599 --> 00:20:19.164
So that way we can maybe just observe.
00:20:20.607 --> 00:20:30.936
One thing that I think is hard for children heck, it's hard for adults is the understanding that sometimes being alone is not the same as being lonely.
00:20:30.936 --> 00:20:38.680
And I do have an episode where I talked with Annie about the difference of being alone versus being lonely.
00:20:38.680 --> 00:20:47.818
And sometimes, when we deal with rejection at school, especially because mom and dad aren't there to help lift us up, we have to give them strategies.
00:20:47.818 --> 00:20:54.980
Maybe we're going to give them mantras that they can repeat you know, I am beautiful, I am loved, I am strong.
00:20:54.980 --> 00:21:02.798
Maybe we're going to give them something to look at, a picture of our family and how much we all love each other and we care for each other.
00:21:02.798 --> 00:21:15.873
But while they're dealing with that, we also have to teach them sometimes it's okay to be alone, because to be alone is an opportunity for connection that wouldn't have been there if I was with those other friends.
00:21:15.873 --> 00:21:24.790
And that's hard to teach, it's harder to walk through, but it's a real life skill because we have to admit, even as adults, it still happens.
00:21:25.980 --> 00:21:31.423
So, teaching them that these are real world problems that they are going to tackle again and again and again.
00:21:31.423 --> 00:21:38.284
So we need to provide them with real world strategies and ways to handle the situation that are positive.
00:21:38.284 --> 00:21:42.173
Not getting angry not how dare those friends not like you.
00:21:42.173 --> 00:21:47.347
Not blaming, because that doesn't lead to healing.
00:21:47.347 --> 00:21:59.022
What we want to do is we want to teach them how to work through bullying, rejection, fears of test, anxiety, fears of not being successful, because they're going to have times.
00:21:59.022 --> 00:21:59.964
They're not successful.
00:21:59.964 --> 00:22:02.791
We're not 100% successful in everything that we do.
00:22:02.791 --> 00:22:06.529
If we are, then we're being too choosy and we're not taking enough risk.
00:22:06.529 --> 00:22:08.505
It's good to take risk.
00:22:08.505 --> 00:22:11.185
It's good to fall down sometimes.
00:22:11.185 --> 00:22:15.260
We're going to learn from that, so we want to teach them to walk through that.
00:22:16.463 --> 00:22:22.520
Finally, we have to differentiate between what is a real fear and what might be an exaggerated fear.
00:22:22.520 --> 00:22:27.031
So, for example, sometimes fears are attention seeking.
00:22:27.031 --> 00:22:32.946
For example, mom, can you check the closet one more time or can you bring me back a cup of water?
00:22:32.946 --> 00:22:39.462
When that starts happening a lot, then it's really attention seeking.
00:22:39.462 --> 00:22:44.726
It's wanting you to stay around, and sometimes we need to say, okay, they need some attention in another.
00:22:44.726 --> 00:22:49.006
Maybe they need some special mom and dad time, or mom just time or dad just time.
00:22:49.006 --> 00:22:55.945
Maybe we need to sit down with them in a different situation, not in that moment, because we're not going to give in to that fear, anxiety.
00:22:55.945 --> 00:23:03.842
We need to sit down with them in a different time and take them out to lunch, take them to the park, whatever it is, spend some extra quality time with them.
00:23:05.324 --> 00:23:14.988
Another one is is there fear due to a perceived trauma and I'm very careful when I use this because I am a trauma therapist perceived trauma versus real trauma.
00:23:14.988 --> 00:23:25.241
The difference really is is that we can take a situation that wasn't traumatic and make it traumatic by how we choose to think about it.
00:23:25.241 --> 00:23:37.227
So if everyone was in this situation and everything was fine, but one person felt, oh my gosh, and it's just having this huge emotional reaction, we have to, in a sense, not dive into that.
00:23:37.227 --> 00:23:39.511
We have to simply say I get why you're feeling that way.
00:23:39.511 --> 00:23:43.287
Now your feelings are not facts.
00:23:43.287 --> 00:23:45.112
Let's re-examine the situation.
00:23:45.112 --> 00:24:01.008
Versus a real trauma the death of a family member, a pet, something, maybe a natural disaster that took place, a tornado wiping out your house that's a real trauma and that can impact going back to school.
00:24:01.008 --> 00:24:03.814
That can impact the way we feel about any situation.
00:24:03.814 --> 00:24:24.007
So what we want to do is we want to differentiate real fears versus kind of those exaggerated ones that are maybe attention seeking or exaggerated because they're not understanding a situation, they're just having a reaction to it, versus a real one that requires extra help, extra support from either a professional, mom, dad, etc.
00:24:25.848 --> 00:24:32.375
Our goal as parents is slow, controlled exposure with a plan.
00:24:32.375 --> 00:24:35.560
A little fear kept in check can be useful.
00:24:35.560 --> 00:24:37.665
I gave the example in my last one.
00:24:37.665 --> 00:24:43.126
If you're driving in ice or snow, it's good to have a little bit of fear to keep you safe, to keep you in check.
00:24:43.126 --> 00:24:49.592
You want your children to have a little bit of fear when talking to strangers, because that keeps them safe.
00:24:49.592 --> 00:24:53.130
It keeps them in the back of their brain going is this a good situation?
00:24:53.130 --> 00:25:02.030
But we also don't want them to be so fearful that they won't leave the house or that they don't have the self-confidence to introduce themselves to mom or dad's friend who they're talking to.
00:25:02.030 --> 00:25:08.472
So that little bit of fear we want to have them have slow, controlled exposure with a plan.
00:25:08.472 --> 00:25:21.173
Little bit of fear we want to have them have slow, controlled exposure with a plan, and that's going to help them overcome anxiety, overcome fear, build self-confidence because now they know mom and dad believe that I can do this Become self-assured of their inner strength.
00:25:21.173 --> 00:25:28.526
That is our goal becoming self-assured of their inner strength, because someday they're going to have to rely on themselves for something.
00:25:28.526 --> 00:25:33.028
We're not going to be there and we want to teach them how to do that.
00:25:33.189 --> 00:25:34.432
Next one, anxiety.
00:25:34.432 --> 00:25:37.645
Part four, our last one, is going to be all about coping strategies.
00:25:37.645 --> 00:25:39.391
So please tune in for that.
00:25:39.391 --> 00:25:44.530
Remember mom, dad, parents this isn't easy to navigate.
00:25:44.530 --> 00:25:45.755
It's going to take time.
00:25:45.755 --> 00:25:49.961
It might become exhausting for you at times and that's totally normal.
00:25:49.961 --> 00:25:52.006
So use your own coping strategies.
00:25:52.006 --> 00:25:58.128
But above all else, you're strong, you're capable and you've got this.
00:25:58.128 --> 00:26:01.460
