Speaker 1: What is Up?
00:00:20
Speaker 2: Mets fans, Welcome back to another episode of the Mets Up Podcast. I mean, you saw what happened this weekend. One of the worst series ever for the Mets. I mean, one of the worst performances that a Mets team that I can remember in my lifetime has ever had.
00:00:34
Speaker 1: Outscored by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
00:00:35
Speaker 2: I think thirty to four this weekend, which is pretty unfathomable for a couple of reasons. One, the Mets are supposed to be good too. The Pirates definitely stake. So that's the craziest part of this all is, you know, you lose some games here and there, you have a bad series. They got mollywop, they got absolutely destroyed by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and we're going to talk about it.
00:00:56
Speaker 1: There's a lot of things going on.
00:00:57
Speaker 2: Mets are in a sixteen game stretch of playing very, very bad baseball, and there's some things behind it. I know a lot of people want to blame Mark Chavez. I've seen people pointing fingers at Carlos Mendoza. The players are not playing well. If your name's not Wan Soto, there's a lot to talk about. Me and James are gonna break it down for you. I don't think we're gonna go deep, deep, deep into this series because overall, again it was pretty intolerable. There's actually not much to talk about, but more so, it's gonna be a conversation about the Mets, what's going on, what's the plan for the future here, and everything going on in the Mets world. Speaker 2: If you're listening to us Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google drops the rating, drops a review, download and subscribe. James initial impressions from the weekend. Besides terrible, horrible, bad, what's another word you got for it?
00:01:51
Speaker 1: I mean terrible, horrible and bad.
00:01:52
Speaker 3: We're definitely the first three horrific, ugly, I'm not gonna go all the way to catastrophic. As the siren goes behind me, i'st the fourth for the perfect timing of how this whole whole thing went, But it was just, I don't know, to use some French dogshit, like the whole thing sucks. Like there wasn't even a moment after the fifth inning in one game this SERI was mess within three runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are one of the most laughably bad, poorly run franchises in all of NIVEN, major League Baseball, basically professional sports at this point, and you basically just handed them three games. And it just sucks that we keep on going on this stretch where the Mets keep blowing the lead they've built up over the first half of the season, ruining what was an incredible three months of baseball down to nineteen and twenty five on the road, which is really really bad, not what you want to do if you want to be a playoff team or a division winning team.
00:02:39
Speaker 1: It's just it's hard. I mean it's hard. It's not even hard.
00:02:43
Speaker 3: It's impossible to find even one single positive to take from the series.
00:02:46
Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think a lot of people are gonna want to point fingers at the pitching because you gave up thirty runs to the Pittsburgh Pirates, and that is also unacceptable. It's bad the pitching. We knew was going to regress at some point. I didn't think it was going to be this hard. I didn't think we'd be seeing David Peterson getting shelld by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Paul Blackburn, I thought was at least a capable major league pitcher where he would be able to get out against the Pittsburgh Pirates. I know the rain delay happened, and I kind of screwed things up too, but he's so bad. He's horrible, and Frankie Montas was throwing what like ninety three ninety four today, so he just didn't have the juice. I mean, he can't keep getting away with that. They the fact that they weren't able to even get length out of these starters in games against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sometimes teams are gonna score, they're gonna get hits, they're gonna get hot, but to not even get some length out of these guys was such a killer and so taxing to this team who's already been going through it with a bullpen and the lack of death from starters to begin with.
00:03:37
Speaker 3: Also, swing back I messed up at fact the beginning saying this, there wasn't a game within three runs after the fifth inning, because Saturday actually was you saying Paul Blackburn joged the memory, but wasscar brows want shit down his leg so hard and actually forgot about how close that game was through like the midle innings there. But you come off the bad blaming Paul Blackburn. I'm not saying Paul Blackburn's a good pitcher. I don't even want Paul Blackburn to make his next start from Perth couns with you, but I felt like a major disservice to him that he was brought back out after a raande lay in the beginning of that game on Saturday, in a situation where for some reason that's happened to mess with three or four times this season, and I don't know why. I don't know why he happened to have been tasked with the opportunity, especially when you have a guy like Brandon Wantell, who's on the roster and fully rested, who winds up still pitching three innings this game. And I'll say this, pitched well in this game. I just don't know why at that point, if that's David Peterson, or if that's Klay Holmes, or if that's like when they come back Sean and I arekore I sank. I understand wanting to stretch your star there a little bit, trying to get that guy more inning. But if it's Paul Blackburn, it's like, I don't know, call spade is paide. Paul Blackman pitched one inning, Paul Blackburan pitches one inning, We move out to the next game. If you want to bring him back in three days, you bring him back in three days. Like, I don't know why in that scenario, calls from those A found it necessary to bring him back in that game on Saturday afternoon.
00:04:47
Speaker 2: I'm assuming again, I feel like the person I've been asking very good questions recently, I missed it immily getting in there asking the good questions, but like there was a lot of questions that kind of felt like we're not poked and prodded enough, And the fact that the response for Paul Blackburn was not really as detailed or descriptives as I would have liked.
00:05:06
Speaker 3: I actually thought Blackman's response was good because he basically set.
00:05:09
Speaker 1: Up from him, I mean from Mendoza.
00:05:10
Speaker 3: Yes, that That's where I was going to go with this, because Blackburn was kind of like they thought the rain player was going to be a little bit shorter, which I do understand that that's fair. It does seem like when you get a rain of lay twenty five minutes to a Major League baseball game, you're expecting to be a quick to light in and out, you know, put the tarpon ten minutes, get back out in the field. Wind up going over a half hours. So that's what it is. But black woman was like, Hey, they told me stay ready. I tried to stay ready. I was amped. I got back in, they're ready to go. I was stretching. I was like keeping active.
00:05:34
Speaker 1: Went a little long.
00:05:35
Speaker 3: I lost a bit of that activity. At that point, the manager calls from Doosa, you have to adjust from what the original plan was like, regardless of what's happening with the weather and the umpires, you have to make a change. If you lose your starter, you lose your start that you have guys ready to go. You called the blade said, well, day before he got to eat the innings off David Peterson, you have Brandon Wandell in the bullpen. He wind up going three great innings. He easily could have gone four, probably could have gone five. It's like you just have to. It feels like this team's playing poorly and Mendoza still in the experienced manager. We forget that because of how amazing last year went. It's I'm not saying this something he does a lot. I'm not saying something I think that he's necessarily guilty of off him. But in this situation, this losing streak, it seems like he's being a little bit.
00:06:17
Speaker 1: Too obsesses the wrong word.
00:06:19
Speaker 3: I don't want something as serious as obsessed, but a little bit too steadfast and sticking to plans rather than adjusting on the fly and doing maybe we actually might be the best in the moment, because it's something that.
00:06:30
Speaker 2: I felt like he was great at last year. When the Mets season turned around, you saw a lot of adjustments. You saw Francisco being moved up to the leadoff spy. You saw Brandimo movie so Peter Lonzo movie like you saw. You saw movement and change, and we even saw that earlier this year when the Mets hit that tiny little skin and then you move on sort of the three hole, and all of a sudden things start to look better again. You start hitting the baseball better, you start having better offense, winning games.
00:06:51
Speaker 1: That is the one.
00:06:52
Speaker 2: Disappointing thing was for sure how some of the games have been handled recently, some of the pitching decisions, but also at the same time, every single button that's being pushed right now, whether it's the right decision process wise or not, is just going wrong. I mean that's also the case too, So I'm sure at the same time, maybe there's a little bit of like thought process behind Mendoz being like, I mean, we got to try something. It's got to be Paul Blackburn's say. Now that being said, terrible decision. We know that hindsight twenty twenty, but still bad decision in the moment, didn't make sense to begin with. I don't know how much longer we can see Paul Blackburn on the mound. He's got nothing. I know, we always joked about he's got nothing.
00:07:28
Speaker 3: But like I still think it's like it's not all the way like with the Boodle conversation we had a month and a half ago, but I still think he's a little bit too valuable to cut is He's a.
00:07:37
Speaker 1: Little bit I think a little bit yeah, Like I'm not saying like what do you think he's like value is, but like what is the value that he brings to this team. That's what I want to know.
00:07:45
Speaker 3: I think he's still an inning sponge, and this is a team with very shallow starting pitching depth for at least the next two three weeks. So I think with that kind of starting pitching depth, you need him to be I mean, I'd be in favor of again switching Paul blackbrid and Brandon Waddell's at I'll say this is.
00:08:00
Speaker 1: He in an ink sponge.
00:08:01
Speaker 3: I think he can be in an ing sponge. It's in the in the proper situation. He's also again we've joked, we joked about this over text, and I don't want to spend much more of this episode trying again to that Black because again I again, like I just said, I don't want Paul black Merin to make his next start. But he pitched against the Dodgers, then he pitched against the Braves, and then pitched against the Braves again, and then he just had a star where he got knocked out in the first sitting and had to come back after a forty five minute rest. Like he's dealt with a lot of bullshit this year with this team that most pitchers won't have to deal with. So I do think that while he's not he's not been good, he's also got the bad end of this stick.
00:08:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, I think both of those can't be true. Okay, that's fair. I'll give you that one. But yeah, no more Paul Blackburn talk. He stinks done. He's doing to pitch against the Yankees, which that's but.
00:08:44
Speaker 3: Getting worse for Paul Blackburrin. Like again, this was pitched Stark against the Pirates. Is supposed to be okay, guests through a clean first sitting and then so here you go take a take a really long break and that's like all right, again, no more Paul black Men talk. But similar to this game, somewhere we're talking about process wise, Mendoza kind of being a little bit resistant to adjusting right now, trying to stick with his guys, breathing confidence more than finding solutions. When this lineup came out, as the sirens keep blaaring wonderful Sat Sunday that in Brooklyn, why is Mark Vanto's hitting second? I gotta be honest, I Mark Vianto's hasn't done anything this season to warrant hitting second. There's no reason on Earth where Mark Vanna should be hitting second, where Brandon Nemo, who's hit lefties and righty's and everybody for the last two months, is down hitting fifth.
00:09:20
Speaker 1: And because this is this is our faulks.
00:09:22
Speaker 3: Besides, I really hope you won't see stalking about say hitting second again yea as Mark Viento's, But like, I feel like there has to be some element of Mark Vantro's re earning that spot rather than just being gifted that spot.
00:09:32
Speaker 1: That was because Bailey Falter was gonna be on the mound, right.
00:09:35
Speaker 3: He was a lefty on the mound, but then yes, and that was supposed to happen, and the rain delay Brex n Ashcraft's on the mound. But still even with lefty on the mound, just hit Brandon Nemo there.
00:09:43
Speaker 2: Well, that was gonna be My whole thing was do you want me to get into a deeper conversation about the offense as a whole. Also, by the way, just for his career, Mark Viento split wise is the exact same lefty righty. So if you're gonna hit him second against the lefty, you technically should then be hitting him second against the righty. If you feel the same way about it, especial because is just better Nimbos, a better hitries one of the few guys on this team that actually is still consistently hitting him Jeff McNeil Wan Soto basically doing all the hitting right now, which is hilarious. The three lefties on the team. I'll do in the hitting right now. But what were you gonna say first, I'll let you go.
00:10:14
Speaker 3: I was gonna say when every time we face left the picture we get shut down.
00:10:17
Speaker 1: But yeah, yes, all right.
00:10:19
Speaker 4: Harry's is gonna get an award here, MVP in the shaving world and aj if you want to equate it to things that we talk about, it's not expensive and it's super versatile right the company itself, because there's other products that you can get on the site, deodorin, body wash, et cetera. But for your everyday shaving needs, Harry's has you covered. And you look at the pricing, you look at the quality, and you're like, wait, why was I using the old classic brand for a long time?
00:10:48
Speaker 5: Listen as somebody right now that needs a Harry's, I've just been lazy. Harry's. I have plenty of them lined up or need to use. You can use them for more than one shave, which is huge for me, and the pricing is right. I gotta go give my because my neck beard is sick. But Harry's will fix that. It'll line me up straight, It'll no bumps, no cuts. It's exactly what I need for a great price.
00:11:08
Speaker 1: That's right.
00:11:08
Speaker 4: Get the edge on your shaved with Harry's. Normally their trial set is ten dollars, but right now you can get it for just six dollars at Harry's dot com slash foul. That's our exclusive link Harry's dot com slash foul for a six dollars trial set.
00:11:22
Speaker 2: The problem with this team right now, we know again the pitching has been bad, but I feel like there's probably a little bit pressure on these pictures right now. The classic feel like you have to pitch perfectly because the offense can't do anything whatsoever right now, can't get anything going unless Wan Sodo physically does it himself.
00:11:37
Speaker 1: I took a look at.
00:11:38
Speaker 2: Some of the deeper numbers as a team as a whole, and I know they again the Eric Chavis conversation is what's hot right now in the baseball world that I'm with it. I mean, I really don't want to see him be the Mets hitting coach much longer. I don't know how much longer we can keep beating our head into the ground and think that something's gonna change here. And this has been a problem with Eric Chabas for a while in the Mets, and I don't know how much of an actual it problem he is, but something's got changed. Someone's gotta be held accountable for the lack of hitting.
00:12:01
Speaker 1: Do you mean Eric Chavas, who's just lucky? Yeah, he is just lucky. I can't even talk about that guy right now, but.
00:12:08
Speaker 2: To talk about what's been going on over this sixteen game stretch for the Mets now, fangrats, I don't think has technically updated if you do like the calendar yet, But the Mets right now over the sixteen game stretch have a two point eighty nine on base percentage that is twenty sixth in Major League Baseball. That's one of the worst on base percentages in the league. Going into this bad stretch, the Mets were fourth in on base percentage over a much bigger sample size three thirty two on base Right now, they're rocking a two eighty nine, so on base fifty points lower than they normally are.
00:12:41
Speaker 1: That's a pretty significant amount.
00:12:44
Speaker 2: You look at the batting averages, the batting average is down two thirty as opposed to two forty eight.
00:12:49
Speaker 1: That's down.
00:12:49
Speaker 2: That's a lot of hits, almost twenty points. The slugging percentage. This is the biggest thing. This has always been my biggest detractor of Eric Chavez and just the philosophy of this team at times, singles, what was the team doing early in the year, James, that was making them score a lot of runs?
00:13:04
Speaker 1: How do you win baseball games? What do we do? Home runs? Baby home runs?
00:13:08
Speaker 2: Right now, the New York Mets have one of the worst slugging percentages in baseball over the last few games, three seventy four. That's around the offenses like the Pittsburgh Pirates, like the Oakland Athletics, like the Chicago White Sox. Those are worse, but that's close. And the Mets slugging percentage over the first good chunk of the year, when they were playing well, was fifth in Major League Baseball for twenty seven It's almost one hundred points difference.
00:13:32
Speaker 1: The WRC plus for the Mets over the good stretch was one fifteen. Right now, the Mets WRC plus over the bad stretch is a hard eighty nine.
00:13:40
Speaker 2: I mean, there's just the offense is non existent, And if you take Jan Soto out of the equation, it's even scarier because he has legitimately had one of the best months in Mets baseball history, and these offensive numbers as a team are still so fucking bad.
00:13:54
Speaker 1: It's like deployably bad.
00:13:56
Speaker 3: Like the problem is that when you look at this full month, a lot of this is still pulled up by the fact that we played the Nationals and the Rockies and the Rockies again at the beginning of US so our stats for the full months still look good. But once we the second that we played that series against the Rays, the second that we had to deal with.
00:14:09
Speaker 1: This Braves Phillies Braves triple.
00:14:12
Speaker 3: Series, like it's you face some good pictures and it feels like they've just kind of turtled, Like it just feels like no one's really there. And I do think a big part of this is one something gets much more simple, like the natural ying and yang of how hot Pelonzo was the beginning of the season. Now, of course, just the way baseball works is pretty cold, right now, that's Okay, the Franciscoo indoor broken toe I think looms large as well. It's he's still hitting the ball hard consistently, but it's just not exactly the same consistency, not the same wombf, not the same poll. I don't think you're seeing that as well. And then it's just it continues to happen. We talked about a lot last two episodes for this bottom of the order is just not doing anything consistently.
00:14:48
Speaker 1: Ever, I think you still have some moments from Brett Bailey.
00:14:51
Speaker 3: I think is still he has still been like a bit of a saving grace to two part of this team this season. But Viento has come back and continue to not hit. Louis Torrenz is still not found the stride.
00:15:00
Speaker 1: Again. We started hard to count of Luis Torrens.
00:15:01
Speaker 3: It's just a very normal nominal backup catching in Major League baseball. Ryan Rizo is simply not that guy. Tyrone Taylor is simply not that guy. Like that's just what this is right now. It's really hard sustain any kind of consistent offense when a third of your line it is incapable of really hitting any single day. I think that's something that needs to be addressed. I think we hope it would addressed by now. We were one four positive last time we talked to you guys after those two Brays games before this Pirates series started. Feel stupid for that recording EPISO Friday Afternoon now, but it's just that's where this team is.
00:15:30
Speaker 1: It's hard to figure how they improve.
00:15:34
Speaker 3: Until there's at least one more bat and Jesse Winker will be another bad who's back in about ten days two weeks now. He's play's playing rehead games in Brooklyn, but there needs to be something. But also at the same time, while they're playing like shit, well every single day it turned on television like I don't really want when it's going to.
00:15:49
Speaker 1: Happen, I'm not.
00:15:51
Speaker 3: I'm definitely still not as Doo mcgloom as most people out there, absolutely even close, Like I'm not like the panic buttons like kind of on the table, like I start to think about twenty twenty three, especially in the last forty eight hours, but I'm still certainly not there yet.
00:16:04
Speaker 1: No, I'm definitely not there yet.
00:16:06
Speaker 2: And as bad again, as bad as that series was, as bad as again, the last two weeks of baseball have been for the New York Mets pretty intolerable to watch. I don't think that a sixteen game sample should change your opinion about what this team can be. I think it can change your opinion of maybe they weren't as good as we thought, maybe they're not the best team in baseball, like they had record wise, stuff like that. And I think most people didn't truly think that, but you could have felt that in your in your heart a little bit like wow, play good with the Dodgers playing good baseball, winning games. So if the Phillies early in the year, like things were looking really good. But I think to be thrown off completely. I mean, I've had a couple of people say I'm out on this team. It's time for Mendoza to go. I'm like, so, we're gonna take over the grand scheme of Major League baseball a ten percent sample size and be like, that's the team that they are, rather than the entire year, which we've seen of I think eighty five games or so, so seventy good games, seventy games of quality baseball, and be like, that's these sixteen games.
00:17:01
Speaker 1: This is who they are.
00:17:02
Speaker 3: This is like if we were in the NFL season and the Mets were six and two and then we got to game and then they were like, we got to game nine, we got smoked in Game nine. Now it would be like, we're five and two, we got to Game eight, we got smoked in Game eight, and then we got to Game nine, and we're six minutes left in the first half. We're still playing like dogshit, Like that's that's how much the Mets are playing bad. If we turned the baseball season relative terms the NFL season, I know we'd like people like to nflize major League Baseball a lot. Friend Matt Eddie came to us that comparison a few months ago. I thought it was a great one because's kind of how all sports media kind of gravitates back to football. So I think a lot of people try to react very quickly of things where baseball is just not that sport, but that while again there's no actual fear and terror, there still has calls for concertain but at the same time, like Galaxy brain take this year is against the Pirates, you get massacred by a horrible team, totally fair. Understand that there's almost some inkling of solace in my heart that while you got masacred by a tent bad team. They played so bad that it's more of a stench than an actual problem with the talent, you know what I mean. Like to me, it's more of like a funk, like a mental thing that something is actually wrong with the players, the organization, the coaches, the mindset, Like it's just not scary. That's probably that doesn't scare me more because to me, it's more like you need like a slap in the face, a shot in the arm, like they had they tried the players only be.
00:18:23
Speaker 1: They didn't didn't work at all.
00:18:26
Speaker 3: You have a player's only meeting a Travis Jankowski pitch his next game.
00:18:29
Speaker 1: That's a big mistake.
00:18:29
Speaker 3: But to me, it's just the fact that it was total mental bullshit, Like the Mets went toe to toe with the Pirates and lost three one round games, and I think I'd be more mad and like.
00:18:38
Speaker 1: They blew them like this the game, or like we have bases loaded up against the bullpen last three innings that we hit into double plays every single time, Like that would actually drive me insane.
00:18:49
Speaker 2: I'd lose some like brain cells over that one. Where this one at least, like you said, by the third fourth fifth inning, I was like, all the game is over. I can go have some fun, not worry about what's going on with this team right now, because it it really is that bad. It's it's a weird thing to say, but getting the shit kicked out of you mentally, I can handle it more than if we lost close games to the Pirates who are so so bad.
00:19:09
Speaker 1: And that that Again.
00:19:10
Speaker 3: Again, maybe I'm just dead wrong on this and might take.
00:19:12
Speaker 1: Maybe we have like Stockholm syndrome too, but maybe said like, you guys, let me own the comments.
00:19:16
Speaker 3: I'm I'm three weeks away or a full six game more losing streak, week away of being twenty twenty three level of Oh, this is actually a catastrophe. But to me, it's just like they kind of showed up to Pittsburgh with their bodies and not their brains.
00:19:30
Speaker 1: No, that's kind of how it feels to me. I'm not it's it's shit, total shit.
00:19:34
Speaker 3: I feel so bad for how many Mets fans were at that stadium every single day since that time it was a pack seven line. My guy Stops was there, went over from Chicago. Incredbile Mets fan. He gets a multiple road series a year it seemed like it was they were loud and proud, and the Pirates fans were really relishing in the fact that they can kind of dunk on in the Mets fans' faces. But it just felt like they it felt like they fully just didn't show up. And some people are mentions like, we got to respect the Pirates. I was like, no, not absolutely respecting the fucking Pirates.
00:19:59
Speaker 1: Their owner, their owner.
00:20:00
Speaker 3: If their owner went to a New York City bar, he would tip ten percent, Like they're not They're unwilling to spend any money whatsoever.
00:20:06
Speaker 4: It might be that time if you're looking for a new car, there's one place to go that is going to take care of you, and it's car Gurus.
00:20:15
Speaker 6: Yeah, looking for a car should be fun, not exhausting. Everywhere else it's exhausting. You're dodging people. You're trying to just oh, kind of look at this car car gur Rus. You type in your search, you find the color that you want, It narrows it down for you, and all of a sudden you're like, this has been an exciting experience and you got a great deal.
00:20:36
Speaker 4: With over four million listings, car grews has more car listings than any other major online automotive marketplace in the US, so you can find the best deal. It's no wonder. Go to cargur rous dot com to make sure your big deal is the best deal that's c a r g u r us dot com car gurus dot com.
00:21:08
Speaker 2: Also this happens in baseball. The Pirates swept the Phillies earlier this year. I believe they swept the Dodgers last year. Like this is not an excuse for the Mets. This is more about the respect the Pirates like. This team fucking stinks. There's no respect deserved to this team. I think they have one hitter with an ops plus above one hundred that's in their everyday lineup. They're pitching has been better than you expected, but Paul Skins really does carry a lot of that. The one thing that I the itch that I cannot scratch, and it goes back to coaching. But not on the side of Carlos Mendoza, Eric Chavez an even a little bit, tiny little bit of Jeremy Hefner here, ever so slightly. He's not infallible. I think there can be mistakes there. How the fuck can we not figure out how to pitch the key? Brian Hayes, Jered Triolo, These guys only play well against the New York Mets. They are five sixty ops guys. Key Brian Hayses had like five hits this year. Is Jared Riolo, of course, had a bunch of hits. There's like a weird thing where sometimes I feel like the preparedness of this team is not the best.
00:22:05
Speaker 1: Pitching is usually pretty solid, So.
00:22:07
Speaker 2: Again I'll just mention how weirdly those guys own the Mets for their career. But the offense, that's what concerns me the most, is the offense is preparedness. It seems like guys don't necessarily have a plan unless your name is Juan Soto, brand Nimo or crazy enough.
00:22:22
Speaker 1: Jeff McNeil.
00:22:22
Speaker 2: Right now, he used to be one of the most impatient hitters in baseball. Now he's taking pitches you have in a great season, But like Pete, cannot lay off the high pitch ever, and he's back to chasing at every single pitch, and that's him being a golden retriever.
00:22:34
Speaker 1: We know that he's.
00:22:35
Speaker 2: Probably like, I need to help this team so bad we can't hit, like I gotta hit home runs, I gotta do whatever. Or maybe he's thinking about hitting singles again because he's not hitting the ball well at all. Lindor has been kind of getting blown by on fastballs. It feels like a little bit more often than you have you go to the other spots in the line, it's like, why, how are their bad hitters prepared for what we've got and we're not prepared for what their pitching has at all with the better hitters, and.
00:22:57
Speaker 1: Sometimes you get beat.
00:22:58
Speaker 2: But this is a weird thing where I think sometimes the passivity of this Mets lineup hurts them at times because I feel like when you face like a Mitch Keller, when you face a Bailey Falter who pitched the other game for the Pirates, who like Burrows, Yeah, when you face the Mike Burrows, don't take them out of the game because you took pitches, because you worked up their pitch count, beat the piss out of them. And I feel like that the Mets team these past two weeks, there's been no let's beat the piss out of this team. It's been like, we're gonna grind away, grind away, grind away. And that's very much the Eric Schabas experience. He wants pitches, he wants grinding at bats, he wants the process of a good played appearance rather than be like, what if let me tell you this, what if we take one of the best offenses in baseball and we put up twelve on them because these pitchers are fucking trash?
00:23:42
Speaker 1: What if we hit them?
00:23:43
Speaker 3: I mean, there is there's definitely some positive sentiment being able to grind at bats, get the ball, pens, do all that stuff. Then again, Zach Wheeler against it has to come with just more consistent baseball and like it's not like the Mets. We're in and out of these at bats. I don't know that quickly. Some of the Pirates guys are also not in our best quickly, but like good and that O'Neal cruise home run the first ending to that, it's just he the first pitch is a color right down the middle of like eighty eight miles an hour, and he hits it to mars.
00:24:07
Speaker 1: It's just like Okay, that's you. That's you can do.
00:24:10
Speaker 3: And also, like the most frustrating part is like you can kind of live with like tanks and dunk singles.
00:24:14
Speaker 1: Like we talk about a lot bomb this Pirate story that was blazing the ball. They were very baseball. Henry Davis is a major bust and he was hitting balls all over the place. You'd think that he was a number one overall. Pick the way he played this weekend.
00:24:27
Speaker 3: Tommy Fam was relishing and crushing the mess.
00:24:29
Speaker 2: Did you see what Tommy FAM's ops plus was coming into the series.
00:24:32
Speaker 1: It was like forty three. That was much higher than that.
00:24:34
Speaker 3: He's got now six hundred ops which is pretty good for the Pirates roster. But again, like Key Brian Hayes onnual Cruise, Tommy Fam Henry Davis in this game on Sunday combined for quick math, here, eleven hits.
00:24:44
Speaker 1: It's insane.
00:24:45
Speaker 3: Eleven hits and eight RBIs. The Mets feels like, haven't had eleven hits a RBIs in a week? Well, the Mets had tenants the other night and scored what one two runs?
00:24:52
Speaker 1: Yep? Saturday, Yeah, sure is. They were all singles. Singles, baby, that's that's the way. I know I'm gonna alienate some more fan base, but I'll do it again.
00:25:00
Speaker 2: Singles are not the answer. I feel like people get it so twisted about. This is what happens when you live and die by the home run. No, the problems that the Mets are having right now is because singles do not win games.
00:25:12
Speaker 1: Everyone lives and dies by the home run. You want to know why. It is the only hit in the entire sport that guarantees you get one run on the board. Singles you need three sometimes four to get one run. Doubles you need two of them. Triples you need two hits.
00:25:27
Speaker 2: Home run you put the ball in the air over the fence, it is guaranteed one run, and if there's guys on base, it might be two, three, or sometimes even four. And the Mets are not hitting home runs at a sustainable rate right now. The power's not there. Pete being cold is a part of it, Lindor being cold is a part of it. But if you take away Wan Soteros like eleven home runs, I think the Mets have like eight home runs in the last sixteen games, which is insane.
00:25:48
Speaker 3: Yeah, again, that game on Saturday, it was just two.
00:25:51
Speaker 1: Doubles one the one by Lindor and the one by Alonzo, and that was it. Yeah. The ten hits, eight of them were singles.
00:25:57
Speaker 3: That's how you wind up with only two runs and also a function what we talked about the top here where there's no semblance of a bottom of the order. The bottom wasn't even that bad in that game. They released a handful of hits, but it's just not it's not enough. Baby had double that game as well.
00:26:10
Speaker 1: I forgot because Baty had the double where unlucky it bounced off the base.
00:26:14
Speaker 2: I can't have yeah tagged him. It was like, oh my god, are you kidding me? How does that even happen?
00:26:19
Speaker 3: Baby made a nice diving play on Sunday too. I will say, like, as bad as this team has been, like, I still continue to have a lot of confidence in Brett Baby. I think it's going very under the raidar that he made my aliens this one too, ye yello me for this. He's become exactly the player we actually expect him to be. In all the offseason content.
00:26:36
Speaker 1: We didn pasterfielder on.
00:26:38
Speaker 3: Based for twenty home runs in a three war season with like a three hundred on base percentage. That's not necessarily a great player, but that's someone that you can happily put seventh in your order and you're really happy they're on your roster. So even basically having a one hundred w RC plus with the most disastrous April any batther ever could have possibly had you, even if you just take the pace from May first on for Brett bay Here, even fo when he came back to the minor leagues on, look at someone's fifteen percent better than the gaverage of the twenty five homer pace, who is getting like a three war player of great defense. He's done what more than enough, I think to be someone who's at least should be capable and be able to be left on this roster for the foreseeable future.
00:27:12
Speaker 1: That being said, it's still not enough.
00:27:15
Speaker 3: It's still there's still an absolute need for another hitter in this lineup.
00:27:18
Speaker 1: Like Brett Baty's doing everything.
00:27:19
Speaker 3: I'm just saying, I don't think guarantees I'm playing time for the rest of the season, But I do think that tells us that Brett Baidy is a capable major league baseball player and that while that's a win, it's not it's not enough what this team needs right now to be the team we want them to be.
00:27:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, and like between Vianto's coming back and still not looking completely himself, but I'll give him, I'll give him ben for the doubt because he just came back from injury. Give him a little second to breathe before I start, yeah, before I start clamoring for you know, changes to be made to him. But so someone has to be that guy to step up. And we also we also do need our two big guys. We need Lindor and Alonso to play better. They've been really bad for two weeks, horrendously bad. Alonzo's about to get his OPS passed by Juan Soda, partially because Wan Soda was amazing and it ops's above nine hundred. Shout out Wan Soda. But Pete's dropping and dropping and dropping. And we've seen the chase rate go back up, We've seen the k rate go back up. We've seen the pop ups and the strikeouts go back up. I don't know what happened. I don't know what changed. But ever since that article came out about how he went and saw outside opinions for how he was hitting, nothing there's been nothing besides that three hit game against the Braves on what the Thursday night.
00:28:26
Speaker 1: Yeah, Thursday night. And it's just it's it's all bad too. Like he's in the bullpen. Like I mentioned, Brase of bon Braze Bon is fucking lost, Bros.
00:28:32
Speaker 3: He's getting sent down surely, I mean he probably is, but just sewing his e books shotting where he was in April May. But it's kind of the function of a guy like Watsco Braze Bones really have a pitchicken lean on beside his change up and at the same time doesn't know where the change up is going. We were like mildly excited about Comin Bochet being up to this team. Are they designated for assignment? Dicky Love Lady is back, got crushed again on Sunday. It's just there's there needs to be some consistency. We were excited about the Frankie Montes debut earlier this week, got hammered again on Sunday. For all the ninety six is nine he were throwing that first start duck down into being ninety fours and ninety fives. Today Frankie Monzas can't really pitch the way he wants to pitch at ninety four and ninety five, and.
00:29:09
Speaker 1: He was really good against the Braves on Tuesday.
00:29:11
Speaker 3: That was because he was kind of just lance lining it like Dominican lance Land, where he was just fastball, sinker, color bag, bank bang hammer, hammer, hammer nine seven miles an hour and ninety eight miles an hour. He show up on Sunday, he didn't throw a pitch over ninety six and a half. It was a lot more slides than splitters, which there was. I guess there was a reason he did not throw those as much on them on Tuesday night because he wasn't really able to throw either of them the strikes on whatsoever, and the pirates were chasing them a little bit, definitely not enough for them to be consistent either. No splitters were touched, none were put in play, but also barely and he got strikes. It's just hard to It's it's hard for Frankie Monzas to be I mean, I don't know, like to if he could throw one more mile an hour hard, I think could be.
00:29:49
Speaker 1: Significantly better than so.
00:29:50
Speaker 3: Not like I'm not like a lot of the people right now where I'm like sh blaring the horns sirens off Frankie Mantas, get him off the team right now.
00:29:56
Speaker 2: But we also are not those Mets fans either. That I mean, we know there's a secret group of them root against the Mets. They don't want to see the Mets do very well. So that's also part of us being optimists the very few of Mets fans. But I know a lot of you guys listening to us as well feel the same way. I know there's gonna be some dissenters. It's gonna be some people where like Frankie Monta sucks and I think you're entitled to that opinion, and sure he proves you wrong, totally fair and fine, but also at the same time, like I don't know, David Stearns pulls the rappit out of the hat many times. He did it a couple times last year. I'm gonna give Frankie Montas more than ten innings before I make that decision.
00:30:27
Speaker 3: And you guys heard hopefully the last episode did was like the first half of the season. Full Breakdown a few days ago, came out Saturday. If you guys have to catch up, catch up. Even though the episode sounds stupid as fuck now.
00:30:36
Speaker 1: After that sounds bad our Doors blowing off in three games series against the Pirates.
00:30:40
Speaker 3: But I still go back to the fact that the thing I'm worried about the team, which I thought was starting pitching the King the years, now started pitching anymore is the lineup, and it is like, yeah, I need one more hit, especially want one more right handed here in this lineup badly. But for s Glenora Pilonzo, I have to kind of just hit better, like someone one of Viantos or Mariso Baby has to just kind of pull themselves up and be a very good hit. And there's also probably a bit of the leadership aspect that Francisco Indoor p Alonso had to step up into.
00:31:06
Speaker 1: Right now.
00:31:06
Speaker 3: We heard in the players only meeting after the game on Saturday that Lindor Alonso and brand Nimi were apparently the most vocal players. Might have to do it again because it didn't really work. Someone might have to I don't know, like I know the whole mantra of Lindor, whose leader of this team is calm, cool, collected, go to the office every day, do your work, put your hard hat on, get down to business. If they have another bad week here at home and head to the All Star Break falling actually games behind the Phillies the division.
00:31:32
Speaker 1: You have to do this again.
00:31:33
Speaker 3: You might have to bring a little more fire and flare to what this is because something has to change mensely with this team. Maybe that falls on Mendoz as well, Like there has to be something that happens, because it's every single game. They looked lifeless again. They looked like they left themselves back into the field and they traveled to Pittsburgh. And it's kind of unacceptable all the time like this in the season.
00:31:51
Speaker 2: Especially because even sleepwalking, you should be able to beat the Pirates.
00:31:55
Speaker 1: It should eaven one game, should it shouldn't. It shouldn't take more than fifty percent effort, Like are just sweeps are so fucking ugly.
00:32:01
Speaker 3: It's hard to sweep a team. It's hard to sweep a good team.
00:32:04
Speaker 1: The fact they've gone.
00:32:05
Speaker 3: Swept down three times in your last five series, it's like crazy, this is how you really lose everything you've built up in the first half of the season, Like all of the wins you stacked are fathing and fathing and fading. Thank god, we had that stretch against the White Sox and the fucking Rockies are a couple of weeks ago. Because now it's like you've got six games this weekend's good teams and the Brewers and the Yankees. Then you have Oriols and Royals teams the back end of that and the menu roachri two teams fighting for.
00:32:28
Speaker 1: Their lives before the trade deadlines.
00:32:29
Speaker 3: Like if you don't wake up and when this is even gonna sound like lose your talk. Six of twelve games, Yeah, now you're going to the all start break feeling like shit. And that's where those again, like I said a couple of minutes ago, that the twenty twenty three starts to creep back in your mind where it's like, is this.
00:32:44
Speaker 1: Team actually falling apart? I don't believe they are, but also I also don't believe that's impossible. Yeah I don't either.
00:32:50
Speaker 2: Again, like you said, the pantic buttons close, it's on my desk.
00:32:54
Speaker 1: I know where it is. I'm aware the box is open. We got the codes, but like we haven't launched yet.
00:33:00
Speaker 2: The thing that I just keep going back to when you mentioned it here before, I bring up about the Mets also on the road being a major problem, and that's that's actually something that does legitimately concern me for the entire season. Pete Alonzo since June thirteenth, again, that is the big day when we played the Rays. He is hitting two seventy six, which batting average. People, that's pretty good, right, pretty good batting average. Surely he must be playing so well, James. How many home runs does Pete Alonzo have in his last sixteen games?
00:33:28
Speaker 1: One?
00:33:29
Speaker 3: I remember one home run. How many doubles does he have? I think I remember two doubles?
00:33:33
Speaker 2: He's got three, So he has four extra base hits in his last sixty played appearances. That's good for a three seventy nine slugging a seven oh two ops.
00:33:42
Speaker 1: Good thing. He's hitting for a pretty high average though, right two seventy six. It's good. He's getting his singles. Has that average? That sounds great. Francisco Indoor. This is the It's it's shocking how bad he's been over the last few weeks.
00:33:53
Speaker 2: At least he has two home runs. It's more than Pete three doubles, five RBIs. He's hitting one to eighty three with a two forty two one base three point thirty three slogging. That is a five seventy six ops twenty total bases. I think Wan Soto had twenty total bases in two games against the Braves.
00:34:10
Speaker 1: Like it's it those two.
00:34:12
Speaker 2: Guys, especially being at the top and that kind of being like Lindor gets the first out of the ending, maybe Nimo and Soto do a little something. Pete gets the next out and then the rest of the orders week. It's pretty tough to have a very two of your best hitters doing absolutely nothing.
00:34:25
Speaker 3: You're also looking at the major league standings right now. We've eviscerated our run differential in these last couple weeks as well. We're down to plus thirty nine. The Cincinnati Reds have a better run differential in US now. The Saint Louis Cardinals are a game behind us in the standings with a better run differential. Like where now we've gone away from being one of like the class of the National League to being in there with everybody else.
00:34:46
Speaker 1: And the second you're in there with everybody else, you are everybody else.
00:34:49
Speaker 3: As we've alluded to, you're now the playoff spot is tenuous, and again we're not standings watching until we gets the July fourth, which happens to be next in a couple of days here, but it's you gotta some If you don't play better, you're just not better. The Marlins are in a seven game win streak.
00:35:03
Speaker 1: That's pretty insane.
00:35:04
Speaker 2: The Marlins have a significantly better record on the road than the New York Mets. The Mets have one of the worst records on the road. The Mets have the same record as the Sacramento As who have thirty four wins on the road, same exact record nineteen and twenty five. There's like two teams that have a worse road record right now than the Mets. There's three, the White Sox, not even the Nationals. The Colorado Rockies and the Pirates I think are the only teams of the worst road records.
00:35:30
Speaker 1: Than the Mets. Here's a galaxy brain.
00:35:33
Speaker 3: Does city feel too much fun for the Mets to leave to have to deal with these other ballparks?
00:35:37
Speaker 1: Here's a galaxy brain.
00:35:38
Speaker 2: Do the Mets love their families so much that they're sleeping too much because they all the newborn babies aren't there to wake them up in the middle of the night, They're getting too much sleep. They come to the ballpark tired. Is that a possibility? There's such thing as too much sleep. Maybe they're used to like they need that six am coffee when the baby wakes up.
00:35:55
Speaker 1: Like our Mets fans too sick.
00:35:57
Speaker 3: We give them too much energy where they go in the road and they play and these half full of ballparks, like how are they.
00:36:01
Speaker 1: Like no choice? So how can you be so so dominant at home?
00:36:05
Speaker 2: Twenty nine and twelve, And that's with having some really bad games, getting swept by the Rays and losing two to the Braves, lost five games they were gonna be twenty nine and seven like before those those horrible, horrible games at horrible stretch, and then you go on the road and you are one of the worst teams in baseball on the road.
00:36:22
Speaker 1: That's a problem. What's the problem?
00:36:24
Speaker 2: I don't know, though, how do you is there is there anybody who can give us some insight how that could even possibly happen. They're not the Colorado Rockies, They're not changing altitudes.
00:36:32
Speaker 3: One of the one of the greatest ironies about this whole stretches that the Mets still have the second or third best win percentage of all baseball can seem over five hundred, yeah, which is I mean again, like We're still trying to hang our hats off there.
00:36:41
Speaker 1: We're still trying to believe in this team in the long term. And I still do.
00:36:44
Speaker 3: I do yeah, while being aware that there is largest chinks in his arm is still and you you're not. Nothing is given, everything is earned, there's no entitlement. And I think we probably have fully now shut the door and they'll momentum from last season, everything that we pulled with us, and I've said the last couple of episodes, but this is still so much reminding me of the Phillies team from last year. No similarities in the roster, of the concept or anything, but just the fact that you kind of rest on the laurels of what you did the year before and try to ride the momentum as long as they'll take you.
00:37:13
Speaker 1: And we had that stretch like a month.
00:37:14
Speaker 3: Ago and we were super excited where we've kept talking guys about the last calend of the year, the Mets of the most wins in baseball, most wins in baseball three sixty five days or six six days.
00:37:22
Speaker 1: Now it's over, but it's like, okay, now you're.
00:37:24
Speaker 3: Off that we keep getting all these all these tweets from the all the Mets accounts on Twitter and Instagram where it's like one year ago was the OMG song night Jose Iglesias the grimmest thing. It's like, all right, Like let's move the fuck on, Like we're playing baseball right now, Like there's a new team with new players, new situation, new emotions, new feelings. We did probably fall into that trap in the early part of the season. You're like, Yep, it's gonna be fun forever. This is awesome now, nothing's ever gonna be bad again. And it's like, all right, like maybe in a greater, longer, more zoomed out degree, like we'd like to say about the organizational structure, in the mindset and the vision nowadays, but at the same time, you've lost that momentum on the field, and are we going to just meander to a five hundred record for the rest of the season, still be eight games over five hundred because of how hot we were in April and may get to the playoff sized cold, get a doors balling off and have an offseason where we're kind of searching for answers without many on the actual roster, because that's kind of what this team feels like they've done this month of June, because again, while they've been dogshit like, he's still if you win, if you go four and two in six games at home, just still basically five hundred record in June. I think maybe one game under if you go four and two, So it's still where you're on pace, where just because of how much you built up, you could make the postseason.
00:38:32
Speaker 1: But that's not the goal. That's not we want to do like you want to.
00:38:35
Speaker 3: You want to end the regular season hot, fibrant, feeling yourself, and that's that's the opposite of what's happening.
00:38:40
Speaker 1: The second. I'm nervous that Grimace is going to make an appearance this week. Oh yeah, I don't know. You think, do you think they make the call to the Golden Arches? I think that would actually be like real horrible.
00:38:51
Speaker 4: I know.
00:38:52
Speaker 2: That's what I'm worried about right now. And it's not that I'm anti Grimace. I know I've been deemed that in the past based on my tweets, and that's fair. But I'm worried that they're gonna try and like manufacture a gimmick right now this upcoming week against the Brewers, and I want to see.
00:39:04
Speaker 1: You just go out and play good baseball. That's it, Like this is a good baseball team, play good baseball for the YouTube crowd.
00:39:08
Speaker 3: I wore some purple pants today. Oh nice hang hanging out in New York Pride, and I got some. I posted a picture on Instagram about and so my friends were like, oh, you gotta put the Grimas pants away, and magic cons like, hey man, this is nothing to do with grim You get your mind at twenty twenty four, I'm just plaring purple pants to support my.
00:39:22
Speaker 1: Homies out there. But it's like, there gotta there has to be a little bit of a move on. There has to be a shake. There's no shake with this team.
00:39:28
Speaker 2: Now, there's one way that a shake can be made to this team. There's a There's a pretty big thing coming up at the end of July, and I think sure, based on how they play. I hope Dave, Yeah, David Stearns sees what's going on. I think he understands better than we do. Obviously he knows what's going on. Do you think he's gonna be a little more aggressive right now based on how the Mets have been playing over these last few weeks, because I I personally, I think he needs to be I think this is the time we've talked about in the past before. The Mets have a lot of chips in that farm system, nobody that's you know, truly like generational, one of those like you can't trade away prospects. I know Jonah Tonk's kind of getting in that range a little bit with how insanely good he's been at Double A. But are the Mets either gonna push some of those chips in to go get a big somebody big, maybe someone we haven't even considered yet, or are we gonna see some of those chips moved up like we've seen on some Brewers teams in the past, where maybe we see in Nolan McLean, maybe we see a crazy jonahtan call up, maybe we see a brand spro call up. Because last mention of this guy until we do with the Yankee series preview and at the end of the Brewer series. But like, how many more times can you see Paul Blackburn do this? How many more times are you gonna if played Tidwell scuffles again, we gotta try someone else, right, We can't just keep throwing him out there and see you get shelled, even though I think me and you both believe in him as a starter long term, at some point maybe them back end of this rotation. I think there's a spark that can be made to this team, either through trades or bringing up some of the young guys. Shit, Jet Williams is playing unbelievable baseball, Like, I'm not calling for him to be called up.
00:40:54
Speaker 1: I think he's still got time.
00:40:55
Speaker 2: But is this Do you think David Stearns tries to bring up some of the young guys as a spark, or that he goes to the trade market and move some of those young guys to get a spark.
00:41:05
Speaker 1: I have bad news. You think either either. I don't think it's either. I just I don't know. You can't tell me that.
00:41:10
Speaker 3: I'm sorry you guys don't want to hear that, but that's just not the way you do it. I think it would be the antithesis of who David Seerns is as executive to take like we began this show where ten percent of the season makes you start to make rash decisions. I think a lot of what we dealt with this Mets roster and some of the development of these Mets prospects are now official major leaguers that the rushing of them getting to major leagues too quickly definitely set them back a little bit.
00:41:33
Speaker 2: Although shout out Francisco Alvrez changed his stance back and to tap pulled to home runs.
00:41:38
Speaker 1: So that's amazing.
00:41:39
Speaker 3: I mean, let's go down and hit triple a pitcher. He can get his number up there too with Mark Fianze Suburb Bailey one day, maybe, but it's just not that's not the way he operates.
00:41:47
Speaker 1: I'm I'm happy that have.
00:41:49
Speaker 3: A GM, but doesn't operate that way where if sixteen games will affect all of your decision make prostseas. We've also have word that there's not gonna be a shake up in the coaching staff. I do think that's something got Like you said, Eric shavs lo mets fans of claim for that. I think there's no way that happens this year. I don't think so almost not unless they you wind up losing like seven more in a row.
00:42:07
Speaker 1: I think that.
00:42:08
Speaker 3: I think if you get swept the next six, I think the whole home stand, then yeah, Eric Shavi has gone.
00:42:12
Speaker 1: The also break. I think right now it's fifty to fifty.
00:42:15
Speaker 3: I mean there might there might have been some instances have happened over the last couple of days that may have made Eric Shavs look a little bit worse in total, maybe not just on the field, but that's near to hear nor there if you guys know, you know, but I can't. I can't see that happening to Eric schav Is eight seven to one one. You know, you know, I'm going there, But it's just that's not that I don't. I just don't see that with t MI stills as good for record. I do think that the Mets have kept Erk Chravis here for a long time intentionally. He's been a part of his organization. He he predates David Searns.
00:42:43
Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what I mean.
00:42:44
Speaker 2: I think also that might be a problem. I was just about to say, does that not scream? Like maybe it's closer than you think. He's not Sterns. His guy Barnes isn't sterns guy either, Sam Bridge Mendoza, but that's also Mendoza was his guy.
00:43:00
Speaker 3: No, but they're not Mendoza's guys. Oh correct, yes, yes, but who's whose guys are they?
00:43:04
Speaker 1: Then? I don't know. I don't well, I do know they're Billy Eppler's and Bucks.
00:43:08
Speaker 3: Well, we know what those we know what those guys are doing now they're not working professional baseball team.
00:43:12
Speaker 1: Does that not?
00:43:13
Speaker 2: Is that not even more of a sign that maybe a change should be more imminent and maybe could be more imminent.
00:43:18
Speaker 1: Reading into the tea leaves a little bit here.
00:43:20
Speaker 3: But yeah, also maybe the vote of confidence that's usually, especially in NFL terms, the moment when you know there's no confidence. Yeah, and it also breaks a really natural time to maybe make a shakeup and a change like that, But also like a is there a sir a person house, there's someone you're ready to do, like I don't know, this seems.
00:43:33
Speaker 1: To be a rash thing. Who's a triple A coach? Get them up?
00:43:36
Speaker 3: But still you're still ten games over. That's the one change I see much more likely than either aggressive minor league call ups. Like we've said before, no, McLean's not even pitched for full season yet He's also not doesn't have the same shrek out and walk numbers that you see from Lee Prospect's Triple A like he's been good for We're still not seeing development the rest of the Arsenal is good, but it's not great, and we made this mistake with Brandons bro Like, I don't know, like you want to rush these maybe he can't.
00:44:00
Speaker 1: Do it, but like but maybe even as a bullpen arm because like does that is that is that.
00:44:05
Speaker 3: Nearsighted though could be could be probably near sighted, especially all these bads, Like no way Jet Williams can.
00:44:10
Speaker 1: Even snooks the major league exactly.
00:44:11
Speaker 2: I don't think he is either, especially because Abby that position is just absolutely clocked the fuck up. Everyone plays shortstop and second base and third base on this team, so it really doesn't help Jet williams case at all. But he is playing out of control in Double A, just a little minor league thing there. He's got like a nine hundred ops playing awesome.
00:44:26
Speaker 3: Maybe once up being maybe Tong is a guy that we're not even thinking about because he is that good. Like we're seeing other teams like the Reds and the Brewers who smell blood in the water call up their monsters and Chase Burns, Jacob Mizrawski and maybe statistically speaking, Joana Tong's on that level. But I think there's also a danger in just scouting prospects based on their statistical acumen, because I do still think there's some things about Jonan Tong's game.
00:44:48
Speaker 1: I think the change has gotten amazing, but it's like that, I mean, he's not Chase Burned to Jacob Mizroowski, who throw white. These guys are actual freaks of nature. Is clearly the best pitching prospects in baseballs. Somethink Jones Hung is awesome, but clearly wrung below them. Like we always say, it's like a top five pitching prospect in baseball. People, there's a big difference with trade one.
00:45:06
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's big differencely one, two and five where those guys come up and it's like, oh my god.
00:45:11
Speaker 2: But like me, it's kind of like it's kind of like the difference from like when Montero and Cinderguard were prospects. It's like you Cinderguard, you get it. Montero You're like, oh, yeah, he's just number that.
00:45:20
Speaker 1: Kind of yeah.
00:45:21
Speaker 3: I mean, I don't don't compare Rafael Montero to Joe Tom Shiver them as fan spot I'm saying from the thought process, this comes back to the guys on the team though, Why we can't be looking to the twenty two year olds Spark the club, like where's like Cisco Indor Peelonzo, Brandon, Nemo, Jeffy Neil wan so though, and then one of the Viano's baby Mauricio triumph It.
00:45:41
Speaker 1: You guys got to hit you.
00:45:43
Speaker 3: You have to do this a few games that we've won this horrible cold streps, like they've won the games because the pitching's not really been that good. I mean, David Peterson Friday night, like Jesus Christ, like that was horrific. He missed every single spot. He threw a good reminder And who David Peason really is? I announcing David Peason really sucks, but David Peterson is not exactly a two two era guy, of course not.
00:45:59
Speaker 2: I also think the the catcher e r idiots that I see on social media talking about how Alvarez is a big problem, all the pictures with their ras where it's like, no, you see, like sometimes pitchers just pitch poorly. Louise Trends awesome man, David Peterson couldn't find the zone and he gave him eight runs like that.
00:46:15
Speaker 1: You blame Louise Renz for those runs right there.
00:46:17
Speaker 3: And Peter's in such a location based guy because this stuff is not stand out.
00:46:20
Speaker 1: He's a four.
00:46:21
Speaker 3: He's got he's got hit all his four quadrants with different pitches, and he would missed every single one Friday night.
00:46:25
Speaker 1: It was arrolling him up. It was crazy.
00:46:27
Speaker 3: And then play tidwill comes again. Brian renlds like his chops and puts on four in to twenty feet so the leftfield stands. But just like what's happening right now, And it's funny too because it feels like I don't know, it feels like that that piracy and like got going by. Brian Renins has been struggling to get U the schnide all season. Now suddenly he looks like an All star again. But Brian Hayes looked like he was gonna get cut. Keep Brian Hayes, there's like a there's like a I don't know why I got some pirates twether on my timeline. There's some some pirates fans just like calling for him to be traded. Where it's like who do you guys thinks to play their base if he's not there?
00:46:53
Speaker 2: But also who do you think wants him and his money? He has a contract, he's a real contract. But I think both sides you just got with each other there for better or worse, give and pat on the back and south see you tomorrow.
00:47:05
Speaker 1: We have to play better. We just have to play better. And I do think a big reason that.
00:47:08
Speaker 3: I also don't think that we're gonna get that prospect hammer like you're talking about.
00:47:11
Speaker 1: I know a lot of the prospect lists are getting refurbished the season.
00:47:14
Speaker 3: We have many on Baseball America talking a few weeks ago and we Pipeline had one two weeks ago and this week Fangrafts had theirs. And the consensus with this Mets system is while there's tons of good players, there's no Blue Chippers, there's no monster, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I still think the Mets have built the system up where we probably won the still the ten best systems in baseball because we probably have five or six guys who are lock major leaguers.
00:47:34
Speaker 2: Dodgers now have a couple of those guys with De Paula and Zyer Hope, but like they could a stretch to where they didn't have same thing these blue Chippers, but they had twenty five really good prospects.
00:47:42
Speaker 3: And you're seeing now with the Dodgers ram machine has been thirteen strikeouts in the triple A game with Dave Roberts being like coined tongue in cheek byt Wednsday has the next major league starting right, It's like he'd be like the second best picture in your extual rotation, Like why are you like messing around with us? And then a guy like mcgolf Farbus who can't get his footing for years and years and years in partial playing time, goes to the White Sox plays every day one twenty ops plus looks like a player, good players. Sometimes these guys need time to get into their grooves. But that's the difference of the hammers like miss Rowski and Chase Burns and Nick Kurtz, where it's like those are guys who changed your.
00:48:15
Speaker 1: Even him, it took him. It took Kurts a full month, month, took him month.
00:48:18
Speaker 3: But to get the guys that change your team, they're guys who were animals like Kurts and Burns were drafted last year in the top five.
00:48:24
Speaker 2: Yeahs are not hop college hitter. He had like a five hundred on base percentage as a college hitter.
00:48:29
Speaker 3: I pray to God them that's will have a top five pick for the next twenty years or not having a top five pick, You're not gonna get those guys.
00:48:34
Speaker 1: That's why the Mets.
00:48:35
Speaker 3: I think you're doing a really good job of building up the the international their international free agency pool, and they're scouting pipeline down there. And also like it's annoys me where it's like, oh, now we're talking about Allio and Pange because you have one game the dslrvuys shut the fuck up about the seventeen year old kid like this. I hate them to click click harboring on these guys that we're not gonna see major league for six years.
00:48:53
Speaker 1: That video was insane.
00:48:54
Speaker 2: The kid that was like on the Yankees picture against them, like, I only that guy has a hair on his higher body, like on his face, on his arm. Was like, he's a baby out here. We're literally watching sophomores in high school play baseball.
00:49:05
Speaker 3: Literally though scattering the DSL is like watching junior varsity baseball, but a better talent, way better age wise. Those are sixteen, seventeen, some eighteen some nineteen year olds, Like that's like watching mid level club baseball in America.
00:49:19
Speaker 1: What was Anthony Davis? I know it's basketball, but like anything. Davis grew like eleven inches or something from freshman to senior year, like some of these guys might up for being like five ninety six four and you wouldn't even blink.
00:49:30
Speaker 3: But again, it's just like again, I know, I know, that's the game that it pays you money now, so you have to get the the it clicks as much as you can, of course, but it's just like it's the focus is in the wrong places of some of this stuff. I think to focus this Mets team has to come back to the veterans, the leaders, the guys who've been there and done that.
00:49:44
Speaker 1: You have to do it. You just have to do it.
00:49:46
Speaker 3: You're playing badly. There's too many studs in this team to let this team be as bad for this long. It's again else I'll make a fine statement right now, this team makes the playoffs. If this team misses the playoffs, it's disaster season.
00:49:57
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, of course it's a disaster season.
00:49:59
Speaker 3: Yeah I'm not I I hate to be like talking ahead, but let's still make that Mets will make the NFCS.
00:50:04
Speaker 1: It's a pretty pretty bad season.
00:50:06
Speaker 3: I can't say that because you get into a five game, three game playoff series. Anything can happen in baseball.
00:50:10
Speaker 1: Anything. We just goes a random series.
00:50:12
Speaker 3: We only made the NLCS last year because we've got we got momth clutch home runs by the two best players on the team. One of those homes, one of those home runs don't happen, we probably don't make the NLCS.
00:50:21
Speaker 1: And we've took up Dodgers six games after that.
00:50:23
Speaker 3: But it's just like, you have to at least get yourself to the dance with a shot to do something, and it seems not able to do that.
00:50:29
Speaker 1: Someone has to answer for that. I'm not. I'm like, I'm not.
00:50:31
Speaker 3: This isn't like fucking Steve Nay Smith over here talking like, oh, what's the legacy going to be for these guys. But it's like, you gotta there's too many good players in this team to be playing like this shit.
00:50:40
Speaker 2: I will say, Uh, we are officially on gong watch. I think I know if you guys have been around for a while. Back in the Meds Days, we did an entire episode about trying to switch to juju good vibes, get rid of bad luck. We're on gong Watch. If you have gongs, I suggest that you hit them at home. Give it a good strike. That's always good luck. I believe in the Chinese culture shout out gongs. But I think we're also on sage watch here as well. I know James out in Brooklyn. We see a couple more bad games. We have to pull out the sage.
00:51:08
Speaker 3: We definitely do because we're playing some good teams this week and now we could just do this and talk to each other forever about this.
00:51:13
Speaker 1: We have to get to this. The preview of the Brewers series coming out to it.
00:51:15
Speaker 3: This Brewers team we have not faced yet this season because last year we had the Brewers Sandwich where we face them for three games opening Day, three games and the season and the bonus three games Wildcard round in the playoffs. And now this team is playing their best baseball they played all season over the last month, one of the hottest offensive teams in baseball of late, which is kind of surprising.
00:51:32
Speaker 1: Best record over the last like thirty games in baseball or something like that.
00:51:35
Speaker 3: And we're seeing some good pitchers from this team. So just get into the pitching matchups. This series three seven, ten games, all at City Field. I know Mark and I are going to be at probably one, possibly two of these games.
00:51:45
Speaker 1: I'll definitely be a one.
00:51:46
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll definitely be at Misarowski Blade on Wednesday. Thursday is very much up in the air. Will not be their Tuesday? Yeah, so are you not being Tuesday?
00:51:55
Speaker 1: Aren't we? Are we going out to dinner? I thought we were eally gonna do that, go to the mest game. We'll figure that. We'll figure it.
00:51:59
Speaker 3: Uh So Tuesday seven to ten a bit of an as off Clay Holmes or his Friday peralta, just as in the side Clay Holmes, Well, I didn't give up a home run for his first I think seven starts of the year, he's given up at least one, and I'm pretty sure the last eight he's made. So the watch out for this, at least the one Clay Holmes home run. Also on Friday. Did you know how many Stars Mitch Keller went without winning a game.
00:52:18
Speaker 1: I'm probably seventy. I don't know when's last time he played the Mets. It was it was fifteen.
00:52:22
Speaker 3: He was he was approaching the Pirates club record fifteenth straight starts by winning his decision, so that we we we helped to break that.
00:52:27
Speaker 2: What did I tell you, By the way, in your fantasy thing you said said you should start Mitch Kellery focks the Mets up every single time.
00:52:33
Speaker 3: Yeah, in the same milk, I was like, I think Dustin May against the Rows, like, of course we're all suck.
00:52:37
Speaker 1: It doesn't make a torch by the roy.
00:52:40
Speaker 3: But Wednesday, a young man off Blade, Tedwolversus Mark just said Jacob MIZZERRASKI, you gonna wax poetic about Jacob Mizzerrawski a second Thursday, also seven to ten with a box the cake at afternoon game for an early podcast Thursday night. This is gonna be a fun one. This could be one that is either really good to really piss his Mets fans off because David p is A versus Hosea.
00:53:00
Speaker 1: What we're gonna have?
00:53:01
Speaker 3: Jose Katana has exactly been good this year, But he also has exactly been Jose Catana, which is kind of funny to think about.
00:53:07
Speaker 1: But video tribute, right, yeah, yeah, video tribute?
00:53:10
Speaker 3: Does it start with the X ray revealing the tumor that the Mets piss in his physical He gotta get missed the half of twenty twenty three.
00:53:15
Speaker 1: Season, broke his rib.
00:53:17
Speaker 3: It was so big the Mets couldn't find the stress fracture and because of a tumor so big in his ribcage that broke his rib.
00:53:22
Speaker 1: But before he ever pitched the game for the team, missing the physical.
00:53:24
Speaker 3: But this Bruce seems good. As the Brewers are every single year. They are a damn good baseball team. There's no other way to slice it. Christian Yelli started off the season ice cold. He's been blazing hot of late. Same with William Macherus, who played through a broken bone in his hand. Shout out catchers that played through broken bones in the well.
00:53:41
Speaker 2: Do you know is Ops was close to Francis squab Is almost like a hand injury might impact your hitting.
00:53:45
Speaker 3: Yeah, but now he's quite good again. Jackson Chario similarly started the season poorly but now has also just been good. He was swinging everything, Yeah, now he started swinging at a tiny bit less and you're showing off the incredible natural talent. Mark your boy sufree look can cats like some cool?
00:53:59
Speaker 1: He's fucking Garder right now.
00:54:00
Speaker 3: I've been sharing the Brett Gardner copabet south three like wide and through the fantasy baseball community. People fucking love it. I'm just taking credit for it, like just fine. Yeah, like you do form my takes over the years, but I'm just gonna have that one. And also on the opposite theok Bryce Raang and Reeze Hoskins, two friends of the program, started the season as other dog shit and now I mean started season incredibly and now our other dog shit have been ice called for about two straight months now. So there, of course he's gonna get Theikskin is gonna hit three home runs. Same with another funny one here someone I like and you hate. Caleb Durban went back to the Brewers as the big piece in the Devin Williams Nester Cortez Right, think Cale Durbin was sneaky, the actual piece of that trade with Nestez one year contract. It's been awesome in the month of June, nearly three hundred batting average, three fifty on base percentage, stealing base, is actually hitting home runs, stabilizing the third base position for the Brewers that's been up in the air for ten years, fifteen years forever.
00:54:52
Speaker 1: Yeah, since they remember.
00:54:53
Speaker 2: I brawn off of third base after his rookie year, I think they had there was someone else in between them. Petro Flees has some good moments there. I think Patrol Flic was on the Phillies, Dude, I think he was on both. Let's take a look at what Petro Flee is up. Do you keep talking?
00:55:06
Speaker 3: And then other guys in this line up, Isaac Collins is uh, he's a very funny baseball player. Who was that there was there was there was a lot of team at.
00:55:16
Speaker 2: Their basement of the Brewers, like twenty twelve's I can't remember It'll find it. I mean that Casey at one point, which I remember, actually put up like one hundred and eighteen RBI's one year one year.
00:55:25
Speaker 3: He was a fans baseball animal that year. But Isaac Collins is funny. He's a switch hitter. He's had a crazing If I'm not mistaken.
00:55:31
Speaker 1: Had aramis Fromiroz at third. Okay, that's definitely not him thinking, of course, because he's a coup of hard. But this guy might just be wrong. I'm way wrong about my Mandal Central history right now.
00:55:39
Speaker 3: Isaac Collins switch hither small guy, ye sneaky rookie, the year guy, I mean the nationally working the year race disaster Jacobs Rawski. After pitching I think seven Ins became the favorite for the National leagu working of the year. That's how much disaster rookies National League are this year. Similar disaster to what the American League is in terms of his teams in general. But again, one more line by Isaac Collins. He's a switch hither totally different ball player from each side the plate left side, if I remember it's right left side, is a slappy right side. He's swing as hard as he can for as long as he can, and it all turns out to being a league average hit who can run and throw. Like every single outfield of the Brewers ever bring up from the system somehow is an athletic corner outfielder who's probably too good for the corner, not good enough for center, who can run, hit for average, run to a home run. It's amazing how they keep developing the exact same player over and over and over and over again.
00:56:23
Speaker 1: And of course it's the Milwaukee Brewers.
00:56:25
Speaker 2: They have a demon bullpen, absolutely disgusting. Trevor McGill continues to prove that he is one of the most slept on underrated relievers in Major League Baseball. Everyone's favorite reliever Abner Uribe, who I believe shot bullets at the Mets with a theoretical gun. After getting the save on opening Sat. Yeah, against the New York Mets game, we threw at Ree Hoskins. Yeah, he's been lights out, He's been unhittable. Me and James have been on this guy for years too. It's coming together. Abnuey Reba is great. Nick Mears is fantastic, even like grand Anderson great.
00:56:58
Speaker 1: Coning.
00:56:59
Speaker 2: Yeah, Aaron despite having the worst extension in Major League Baseball great, Like they are just freaks on the mound. The Mets need to get out early and score early, because if the Brewers bullpen gets a lead, they usually don't give it up.
00:57:12
Speaker 3: And something else the Brewers do amazingly every year, and of course we're learning this in Mets now with David Searns coming from the.
00:57:17
Speaker 1: Brewers to this Mets team.
00:57:19
Speaker 3: They find guys in the back of this rotation every year and for no reason, they're awesome. Quinn Priest, after being traded from the Pirates of the Red Sox stinking, then being traded from the Red Sox to the Brewers for low end prospects, it has been awesome. One of the most consistent pitchers the National League's entire season, and there's no real stuff behind it, and there's still a lot of hiding of his fastball at breaking balls. But he's so cunning and he's really improved his command a lot. He's become the reincarnation of Tobias Myers. But while as Tobias Myers started to suck again, which is probably preview, he throws a little harder. To write, a little harder'll be also a fewer pitches. Tobias Myers was a tunnel king, where Quinn Priester does have the hammer. I think it's a curveball or a slyer. And then have talk about especially because we're going to see because we're going to see him in the series, him as ra asking if you guys haven't seen him, haven't heard He's become like the talk of major League Baseball. He beat Paul Sken's head the head last week. I think that really picked up the shine. I've heard national media and I started talking about miz It's it's openly the.
00:58:12
Speaker 1: Best stuff in baseball.
00:58:13
Speaker 3: I can actually say that honestly, Like it's it's a slider that moves like a foot and comes in like ninety five miles an hour. You're gonna see some ugly swings on in the fastball that gets up to one hundred two miles an hour, which, by the way, almost eight feeted extension.
00:58:26
Speaker 1: I was about to say, he's.
00:58:27
Speaker 2: Releasing the ball about fifty three fifty two feet away from you, so it's one oh one, one oh two from even closer than you could ever imagine the guys tickling you with the fastball.
00:58:36
Speaker 1: Yeah, I saw it on someone's calculation.
00:58:38
Speaker 3: Shout out at Alex Chamberlain with his pitch leader board Alex Chamberlain's great great tableau page. If you guys are in fans baseball deep pitching numbers, the perceived velocity has gotten up to bet one hundred six miles an hour. Yeah, goodluck, which would be the fastest pitch any player has ever seen. He's an animal, six foot seven. He technically pitched a no hither through the first nine innings his major league career, but that was over two separate games.
00:58:57
Speaker 1: It's only given up three hits. It's it's out rageous how good this guy is. And we're gonna face him.
00:59:02
Speaker 3: This offense really not hitting well at all, so it's, uh, it's it's gonna have a work cut out for us there.
00:59:06
Speaker 1: It's it's a spectacle.
00:59:07
Speaker 3: I'm excited you're gonna be able to go to that game because I'm be covering for NBC for Wednesday night.
00:59:10
Speaker 2: You know, I was not missing Miserowski. The one thing that I will say about him, he can lose his mechanics at times. His mechanics are super super super huge place. Yeah, he's just a monster human being. He falls off hard to first base, like incredibly incredibly hard. I'm gonna tell you right now, I think Wan Soda lays down a bunt against them.
00:59:28
Speaker 1: I can see that once.
00:59:29
Speaker 3: So it has been been sneaking around the bunch lay want So it has been so good, so funny that this team was incredible and one so other couldn't hit. Now this team sucks ass and one so it doesn't get out.
00:59:37
Speaker 2: But because now that he's not, because he's hitting home runs, not getting on base, Pete's like, oh fuck, I gotta start hitting singles again.
00:59:43
Speaker 1: So make sure someone's on base.
00:59:44
Speaker 3: And just gotta give credit word to do to Freddie Peralta, who just has become one of the most steady, consistent pitchers in baseball. It Dynasty League trade a couple of months ago, like the first couple weeks of April where I shipped off Freddy for cam Smith Astros who finally just turned the corner. Got thought that was a nice square trade, a good deal for both sides. But Fridday's awesome still got the nice cut ride fastball. He's done something crazy this year. Where he was always fastball Slyder fastball, slider.
01:00:09
Speaker 1: Had anauseum and now it's not at all.
01:00:12
Speaker 3: He's it's all it's all curveball change up, which is amazing because the whole thing of Freddy Perlter forever I had from twenty twenty one about pitchers who need a third pitch for pictureless way back in the day when I started making content, I wrote it in the Airbnb and Scott Slyer zone. I was hanging out with my friends of spring training and I was about take a solo roacher by myself, and it was all about, this is Freddie Proult if he needs that change to come along, so slider doesn't even happen anymore. It's all change ups and curveballs, and he's been found really really good form of both of them, and he owns able owns them.
01:00:37
Speaker 1: I mean he owns everybody's guy.
01:00:38
Speaker 3: The guy for his career has as a starting pitcher for his career has Let's see what it is here, I was not a starting pitcher just overall.
01:00:44
Speaker 1: Freddy Prolo is a one point one four.
01:00:46
Speaker 3: Whip in his career in a three seven ERA, and that's was the first three major league seasons that spanned almost two hundred ins. Where's the ray was four and a half. Yeah, so since Freddy Perlton became a full time started in twenty twenty one, we're looking at like a three to two e RA and like a one point one er whip. And you can't really good pitcher. You can't forget to have Manager of the Year as well, Pat Murphy that year, Pat Murphy. You no, no, nothing's been winning the manager the year. It's goodeam, it's good baseball team baseball. They don't fuck anything up. They they're really good defense, they run the base as well. They have a good mill of the order.
01:01:12
Speaker 1: It's it.
01:01:13
Speaker 3: This is the best collection of talent, which is kind of ironic I think the Brewers have had in a very long time.
01:01:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's a it's a very uh I mean, they could still use one more legit, legit bat, but the pitcher's about as good as it's been. The lineup top to bottom feels very, very capable, which is something that you haven't always been able to say about their offense with.
01:01:32
Speaker 3: The Hammers in the middle between Churio and nice catch and that slot just caught a fly that was awesome. Cherio Yelich and William Contreras is still lights out middle of the order. Yeah, that's a hard of the order that can get tend with basically any team the league. It's definitely not in the part of I would say the Mets and the Dodgers, but it's like of the second tier that's a scary two three, four.
01:01:50
Speaker 1: They're so pesky.
01:01:52
Speaker 3: Yeah, and like the rest of the guys are pesky, and Reeze Hoskins will rre into one guaranteed in the series against the.
01:01:56
Speaker 1: Mets anything else. So is it time to wrap us up? I think I'm gonna check on Frankie Pepper's but I was checking my d MS before I didn't see anything from him. I mean, it's it's been bad.
01:02:06
Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, Frankie Peppers has has taken himself out of this episode, so we we we respect Frankie, respect his silence at this moment. All No, I don't know if the Mets team deserved Frankie Pepper's after this. I have a question before we go, do you think anyone of the mess locker room's ever heard Frankie Peppers?
01:02:20
Speaker 1: Yeah, you be bad? Who would you have the guess? Yeah? I would go McNeil as well. Yeah, that's awesome to hear a little baseball rat. That's what he is. It's great to think about anything else. That's it.
01:02:33
Speaker 3: I think that's it, And as you guys know, keep checking out that merch at the bottom. I also think Mark and are going to be at the Game Subway series Sunday July Saturday, July fifth, planning for a trained episode good or Bad, So get ready for that one. 01:02:57
Speaker 3: I think I think bad might be as good as good for the comty think so for sure, Oh my god, because we know the place is gonna be packed.
01:03:03
Speaker 1: I guess yeah, we might get some mute and Yankee fans onto.
01:03:05
Speaker 3: Any kind of nonsense that we can get. I think I think we thrive in nonsense.
01:03:08

If you do enjoy the podcast, make sure you follow us on all our social media on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok at Mets Up.

Speaker 1: Get in the episode early. We appreciate you.
00:01:39
Similar web estimated traffic data shows car grews is the number one most visited car shopping site. Buy or sell your next car today with car gur Us at cargreus dot com.
01:03:08
