00:00:01.600 --> 00:00:05.040
Welcome to this episode of the Life Work Podcast.
00:00:05.200 --> 00:00:09.919
And today we are joined by Kendall Davenport Lane.
00:00:10.160 --> 00:00:10.720
Is that correct?
00:00:10.880 --> 00:00:11.439
That's correct.
00:00:11.679 --> 00:00:12.800
Welcome to the podcast.
00:00:12.960 --> 00:00:13.919
Thank you so much.
00:00:14.240 --> 00:00:18.160
So um I've been watching you.
00:00:19.199 --> 00:00:19.519
Oh no.
00:00:19.839 --> 00:00:20.800
I know that, yes.
00:00:21.199 --> 00:00:26.960
And I alluded to this before we started that I've been watching you in your previous.
00:00:27.120 --> 00:00:28.879
Okay, so I'm going to back up here.
00:00:29.679 --> 00:00:34.000
What brought you to Williams this time?
00:00:34.159 --> 00:00:37.759
And then I'm going to talk about what brought you to Williams the first time.
00:00:38.799 --> 00:00:43.119
Okay, well, this time was unexpected, unlike the first time.
00:00:43.359 --> 00:00:43.679
Okay.
00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:50.159
But this time I had a I was working um school-based mental health therapy.
00:00:50.399 --> 00:00:50.719
Okay.
00:00:51.280 --> 00:00:54.640
And I'm in my um supervision right now.
00:00:54.880 --> 00:00:55.200
Okay.
00:00:55.359 --> 00:00:56.960
And so I had a supervisor.
00:00:57.200 --> 00:00:59.520
So tell everybody what it is you're talking about.
00:00:59.679 --> 00:01:01.759
You are doing what for a living?
00:01:02.560 --> 00:01:03.439
Professional counselor?
00:01:03.679 --> 00:01:04.319
Yes, yes, yes.
00:01:04.480 --> 00:01:09.920
I'm a licensed pro I'm a licensed associate counselor and I'm working towards becoming a licensed professional counselor.
00:01:10.239 --> 00:01:10.319
Okay.
00:01:10.480 --> 00:01:10.879
So I need two.
00:01:11.200 --> 00:01:12.000
So you're an amateur.
00:01:12.239 --> 00:01:13.760
Yes, exactly.
00:01:14.400 --> 00:01:19.040
I needed two years of um supervision to get my licensed professional counselor.
00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:20.239
Mm-hmm.
00:01:20.480 --> 00:01:30.719
And so um I my supervisor for that, she actually brought up the idea um of me, you know, looking into Williams.
00:01:31.120 --> 00:01:34.319
And I was like, okay, well, I have no experience.
00:01:34.560 --> 00:01:35.439
I never taught.
00:01:35.840 --> 00:01:38.959
So she knew about the position on our faculty here before you did.
00:01:39.200 --> 00:01:39.439
Yes.
00:01:39.599 --> 00:01:39.920
Okay.
00:01:40.079 --> 00:01:40.719
Yes.
00:01:41.040 --> 00:01:44.239
And actually, I really thought that it was an adjunct position.
00:01:44.400 --> 00:01:50.000
And so I was thinking, okay, you know, I'll look into it a little bit as an adjunct.
00:01:50.239 --> 00:01:52.799
And then I contacted um Dr.
00:01:52.959 --> 00:01:54.879
Val for more information.
00:01:55.439 --> 00:01:57.599
And he was like, no, this is full time.
00:01:57.840 --> 00:02:02.319
And I was like, oh, well, you know, like, I don't know if I'm qualified.
00:02:02.480 --> 00:02:04.079
Like I was just, I've never taught before.
00:02:04.239 --> 00:02:05.200
And he's like, no, no.
00:02:05.359 --> 00:02:08.080
He's like, just apply and see, you know, where it goes.
00:02:08.159 --> 00:02:09.120
And so I was like, okay.
00:02:09.280 --> 00:02:10.639
I had that conversation in the car.
00:02:10.719 --> 00:02:15.199
And then I walked in and I told my husband, I was like, yeah, I'm not doing that.
00:02:16.159 --> 00:02:21.199
And I'm not, the reason I was so adamant about it is because I just didn't feel qualified.
00:02:21.520 --> 00:02:27.120
And so um, the more that I prayed about it, um, I really struggled with it.
00:02:27.199 --> 00:02:28.719
And I really didn't know.
00:02:28.960 --> 00:02:34.560
Um, and I this might come up later, but I've always been very sure of what the Lord wants me to do.
00:02:34.719 --> 00:02:36.319
I've always been sure about my calling.
00:02:36.560 --> 00:02:39.039
And at the beginning, I was not sure about this.
00:02:39.280 --> 00:02:42.000
And so that was a different experience for me.
00:02:42.240 --> 00:02:52.800
Um, but the more that we prayed about it together, and the more that um really I I talked to my supervisor and others about it.
00:02:52.879 --> 00:02:57.360
I was like, okay, I'm just gonna interview, I'm gonna see where it goes.
00:02:57.599 --> 00:03:07.439
And I interviewed and I did feel a lot of peace about it, but I was still a little nervous because it was so unfamiliar to me.
00:03:07.840 --> 00:03:16.639
But um, I remember so vividly that one day I was coming home from a counseling session that I was really worried about.
00:03:16.800 --> 00:03:22.879
Uh I was worried um about how it would go, and then it ended up going really well.
00:03:23.120 --> 00:03:28.000
And I remember thinking, okay, maybe I can do counseling, maybe I'll be good at it.
00:03:28.080 --> 00:03:32.400
And it was as audible as it could be not audible, you know what I mean?
00:03:32.479 --> 00:03:38.879
Like I felt it so clearly that the Lord said, I did that whole thing and I'm calling you to go.
00:03:39.039 --> 00:03:42.639
And so I went home and I was like, okay, I have to go to work now.
00:03:42.879 --> 00:03:42.960
Yeah.
00:03:43.039 --> 00:03:45.439
And now I'm so happy that I chose that.
00:03:45.680 --> 00:03:47.599
But yeah, it was unexpected for me.
00:03:47.919 --> 00:03:50.319
So I mentioned to you that I've been watching you.
00:03:50.479 --> 00:03:52.400
Do you have any idea what I'm talking about?
00:03:52.960 --> 00:03:56.560
I I don't because I really don't post on social media, so I can't believe anything.
00:03:56.960 --> 00:03:58.560
This is from social media.
00:03:58.800 --> 00:04:11.199
I don't know if you were a sophomore junior or senior, but there's a video of you made about when you were a student, about why you came to Williams.
00:04:11.280 --> 00:04:12.080
Do you remember that?
00:04:12.319 --> 00:04:14.080
I do remember that now, yes.
00:04:14.319 --> 00:04:15.120
So vaguely.
00:04:15.520 --> 00:04:19.120
You know who sent me the link earlier today for me to look at it.
00:04:19.439 --> 00:04:21.839
You were a young student then.
00:04:22.319 --> 00:04:24.879
So, freshman, sophomore, junior, where were you in that?
00:04:25.040 --> 00:04:25.439
Senior?
00:04:25.600 --> 00:04:26.720
Yes, it was my senior job.
00:04:27.040 --> 00:04:28.800
We overlapped two months.
00:04:29.040 --> 00:04:29.279
Yes.
00:04:29.439 --> 00:04:29.759
Yes.
00:04:29.920 --> 00:04:30.319
Yes.
00:04:30.879 --> 00:04:32.879
I got here and you said, I'm done with this place.
00:04:33.040 --> 00:04:35.680
Norman's here, and you left, you walked.
00:04:36.079 --> 00:04:36.560
I did.
00:04:36.639 --> 00:04:37.040
I left.
00:04:37.120 --> 00:04:38.240
I left the country.
00:04:38.560 --> 00:04:38.879
Okay.
00:04:39.680 --> 00:04:40.959
It was that bad.
00:04:41.600 --> 00:04:42.560
You couldn't get away.
00:04:42.879 --> 00:04:45.519
I can't get away far enough, fast enough.
00:04:45.680 --> 00:04:45.920
Yeah.
00:04:46.160 --> 00:04:47.199
You left the country.
00:04:47.360 --> 00:04:48.639
What happened there?
00:04:49.759 --> 00:04:53.120
Well, do you want to talk about the video or what which part of it?
00:04:53.360 --> 00:04:55.279
Well, tell yeah, go ahead and talk about the video.
00:04:55.600 --> 00:04:55.839
Okay.
00:04:55.920 --> 00:04:59.600
I think the video was talking about my junior year, my first semester.
00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:02.800
Uh did the hands-on program with the IMB.
00:05:03.040 --> 00:05:03.759
You did do that, yeah.
00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:10.879
It was a fantastic experience, um, which is um why I came to Williams in the first place.
00:05:11.199 --> 00:05:18.240
Yes, it is, because you talk about missions and coming to Williams to learn about missions, to do missions and to serve on the mission field.
00:05:18.480 --> 00:05:18.959
Yes.
00:05:19.199 --> 00:05:21.439
And then that was the video.
00:05:21.519 --> 00:05:23.040
It was a very brief video.
00:05:23.199 --> 00:05:27.680
And then you went from there, graduated, and you went to the mission field, right?
00:05:27.839 --> 00:05:28.639
I did, yes.
00:05:28.720 --> 00:05:36.959
I spent um two years in South Asia um with the with the IMB, and that was a fantastic experience.
00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:40.959
It was difficult because um what did you do on the mission field?
00:05:41.360 --> 00:05:53.120
Well, we um I'm trying to think of what all I can say, but we did a lot of discipleship, a lot of um evangelism, a lot of mapping.
00:05:53.360 --> 00:05:57.040
Um so figuring out where people are.
00:05:57.279 --> 00:05:57.839
Yes.
00:05:58.160 --> 00:06:04.480
And um yeah, a lot of um a lot of work on college campuses um with college students.
00:06:04.720 --> 00:06:09.680
And the reason you have to being a little vague here is it's a restricted area.
00:06:09.920 --> 00:06:10.160
Yes.
00:06:10.319 --> 00:06:14.000
Yes, yes, so you can't just I can't say everything I want to say.
00:06:14.480 --> 00:06:15.199
Sure, sure.
00:06:15.360 --> 00:06:16.720
And you did that for two years.
00:06:17.120 --> 00:06:17.519
Two years.
00:06:17.600 --> 00:06:21.680
I came back um June of 2020 and said you came back off that.
00:06:21.839 --> 00:06:22.560
What were you thinking?
00:06:22.639 --> 00:06:33.120
Like I'm going back, or that that fulfilled a sense of this season of my life kind of calling now on to the next thing, or what were you thinking?
00:06:33.600 --> 00:06:43.759
It was really kind of an identity crisis for me, honestly, because I had my whole life I was planning to do missions.
00:06:43.920 --> 00:06:50.319
Um, I started when I was 16, my parents let me go um to Africa with our church.
00:06:50.639 --> 00:06:55.040
And um, ever since then I was just like, this is what I'm doing.
00:06:55.279 --> 00:07:03.199
Um and so my experience overseas was great, and it was very difficult.
00:07:03.680 --> 00:07:12.319
And um so when I so before I had left the field, I did have plans to come back um as a long term.
00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:22.959
Um it was during COVID, so I came back and had to do a quarantine and and things like that, all of that fun thing, fun memories to think about.
00:07:23.120 --> 00:07:44.399
But um that time of quarantine and and that time of me coming back to the States, I felt like um the Lord had protected me from feeling all my feelings while I was over there, while I was overseas, because um because it was difficult and I had a job to do.
00:07:44.560 --> 00:07:48.399
And then whenever I came back, I really felt like I had time to decompress.
00:07:48.720 --> 00:07:52.319
And so I felt like it was not a good time for me to come back.
00:07:52.399 --> 00:08:08.720
Um, but I struggled with that because I didn't know if I was um disobeying the Lord because I had felt this call in my life for so long, or if I was being um prideful and thinking, like, okay, if I don't be a missionary, then I'm nothing.
00:08:09.040 --> 00:08:11.279
Quick, think of a high school senior you love.
00:08:11.439 --> 00:08:12.079
Got someone?
00:08:12.240 --> 00:08:16.160
Next fall is closer than you think, and Williams could be exactly what they're looking for.
00:08:16.319 --> 00:08:20.000
Invite them to our first fall preview day, Friday, September 25th.
00:08:20.079 --> 00:08:21.439
We'd love to show them around.
00:08:21.600 --> 00:08:25.040
Just text them the link in the show notes and say, This made me think of you.
00:08:25.120 --> 00:08:26.000
You should check it out.
00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:27.519
You know, I really struggled with that.
00:08:27.759 --> 00:08:28.319
Wow.
00:08:28.639 --> 00:08:35.600
So walk us through how you came to a place of purpose and peace through all of that.
00:08:35.759 --> 00:08:37.039
What did that look like?
00:08:38.480 --> 00:08:47.360
It was difficult, but it started with me um accepting that the Lord loves me no matter what.
00:08:48.000 --> 00:09:00.159
And also I I eventually through prayer and um talking to mentors and um all of that, I just felt like the Lord really gave me a choice.
00:09:00.399 --> 00:09:07.759
Like I because I didn't feel strongly, um I I felt like the Lord said, you can choose.
00:09:07.919 --> 00:09:09.360
If you want to go back, you can.
00:09:09.519 --> 00:09:10.480
If you want to stay, you can.
00:09:10.639 --> 00:09:13.360
And I don't know, that hasn't happened to me very often.
00:09:13.600 --> 00:09:16.639
Um and so that that was an interesting experience.
00:09:16.960 --> 00:09:27.120
But when I decided to stay, I took a year off of um, so I had a psychology degree um and I didn't do any schooling while I was overseas.
00:09:27.279 --> 00:09:32.000
Um my plan was to go back to grad school to um become a clinical mental health counselor.
00:09:32.480 --> 00:09:37.120
Um, but I did take a year off and I just um healed during that time.
00:09:37.279 --> 00:09:40.399
I just spent a lot of time um with mentors.
00:09:40.480 --> 00:09:49.759
I s I got plugged into a church, I got plugged into small group, I got plugged into community, um, I actually started dating my husband then too.
00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:50.320
Okay.
00:09:50.639 --> 00:09:52.480
We're gonna talk about that a little bit.
00:09:53.519 --> 00:10:00.399
And so that was that time was just such um the Lord spoke to me so much through that time.
00:10:00.559 --> 00:10:16.159
Actually, somebody that I went overseas with, she sent me a message um during all of that, and she said that she had a dream about me and that I was just um on my knees praying and that the Lord was kind of covering me in that dream.
00:10:16.639 --> 00:10:21.200
And I don't know, when she sent me that, it just felt very affirming.
00:10:21.360 --> 00:10:29.279
Like I think my biggest fear was that the Lord was mad at me or that the Lord um didn't value me as He as much as He did whenever I was doing missions.
00:10:29.360 --> 00:10:35.600
And so that vision was or that dream that she had, um that really helped me.
00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:37.679
So I don't want to put words in your mouth.
00:10:37.840 --> 00:10:55.440
Yeah, but as I'm listening to your story, I think if I'm understanding correctly, and you correct me if I'm wrong, is for a period or season of your life, you had this idea that you would be more acceptable to the Lord if you were a missionary than if you were something else.
00:10:55.919 --> 00:10:58.240
Yes, an overseas missionary specifically.
00:10:58.639 --> 00:10:58.960
Okay.
00:11:01.440 --> 00:11:03.360
That's a that's a big load to carry.
00:11:03.840 --> 00:11:04.480
It was.
00:11:04.879 --> 00:11:05.360
It was.
00:11:05.440 --> 00:11:08.639
That's why it took a while to process.
00:11:09.519 --> 00:11:12.399
So how did how did you come out of that?
00:11:12.559 --> 00:11:23.679
I mean that that that sense of been overseas and in thinking that way that um I'm more acceptable to the Lord if I'm overseas missionary.
00:11:24.159 --> 00:11:25.440
That's not happening now.
00:11:25.919 --> 00:11:33.600
I'm struggling with this, not so much struggling just with the call, but even deeper than that, struggling with my worth and value in Christ before God.
00:11:33.840 --> 00:11:34.320
Yes.
00:11:35.200 --> 00:11:36.639
When was a breakthrough in that?
00:11:36.720 --> 00:11:37.759
How how did that come?
00:11:37.840 --> 00:11:41.440
Or was it a moment or was it a just a period of?
00:11:41.919 --> 00:11:51.200
You know, um it took time because I think that that was a um belief that I had for a long time, but I didn't realize it.
00:11:51.360 --> 00:11:57.519
You know, I didn't I didn't necessarily recognize that in in myself and in my thinking.
00:11:57.840 --> 00:12:23.120
And so I wouldn't say that it was a specific time um or anything big that happened, but it would be just the continue um continuation of a daily walk with the Lord, recognizing his character, understanding um and and also being grateful for the things that he has given me in my life now and just understanding that, okay, he loves me no matter what.
00:12:23.279 --> 00:12:27.120
And he continues to guide me, even if it's not overseas.
00:12:27.279 --> 00:12:30.159
He's guided me here and he's given me opportunities here.
00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:33.200
And um, yeah, so he still works.
00:12:33.519 --> 00:12:38.879
Any any idea about how long it took you to come to a place of peace about all that?
00:12:40.960 --> 00:12:47.200
Yes, because it's actually so funny because I actually did just go back overseas a couple weeks ago.
00:12:47.440 --> 00:12:47.919
Yes.
00:12:48.159 --> 00:12:51.759
Um, which was a very redeeming trip for me.
00:12:52.000 --> 00:13:00.000
Um, I did not want to go because um there's just a lot of feelings, like I had, I mean, alluded to, there's a lot of feelings with that.
00:13:00.080 --> 00:13:15.039
And so I felt um, you know, because there's still there was a sense of guilt for me because um there's so much lostness in the world, and so I had felt guilty about um not going back and not because I knew the lostness, so I felt guilty for not going back.
00:13:15.200 --> 00:13:29.360
Um, and honestly, it was literally just this trip where I had really just felt total release of um the Lord being like, I love people here, I love people there, I have people here for you.
00:13:29.519 --> 00:13:32.159
You know, there's there's we have our fair share of lostness here.
00:13:32.559 --> 00:13:33.519
We do, we do, we do.
00:13:33.679 --> 00:13:44.639
And so um this the trip that I just went on was um probably where I have felt and been most honest about okay, now I feel peace about it.
00:13:44.799 --> 00:13:48.559
And so I don't know, 18, 19, 21, 20, 20, 4, 5, 6, 8 years.
00:13:48.799 --> 00:13:49.039
Wow.
00:13:49.200 --> 00:13:50.480
Yeah, it's been a journey.
00:13:50.799 --> 00:13:51.279
Wow.
00:13:51.519 --> 00:13:52.080
Yeah.
00:13:52.399 --> 00:13:56.000
So our listeners may not know you drive a camo covered pickup truck.
00:13:56.639 --> 00:13:57.600
Is that right?
00:13:57.840 --> 00:13:59.039
No, it is not right.
00:13:59.120 --> 00:14:01.279
I do I know there's one in the family.
00:14:01.600 --> 00:14:06.159
Yes, you know, we I have tried to retire that really from him.
00:14:06.320 --> 00:14:07.840
So and who is the him?
00:14:08.320 --> 00:14:10.240
Um, my husband, Halen Lane.
00:14:10.320 --> 00:14:17.519
Yes, he is um known for his camo truck, which he has a lot of other good qualities, so don't let that happen.
00:14:17.919 --> 00:14:18.720
Oh wow.
00:14:18.960 --> 00:14:21.039
That apparently doesn't make the list though, does it?
00:14:21.360 --> 00:14:22.240
No, no, it doesn't.
00:14:22.480 --> 00:14:22.720
Wow.
00:14:22.799 --> 00:14:24.399
Well, you he had it when you met him.
00:14:24.639 --> 00:14:26.399
So you knew what you knew what you're getting into.
00:14:26.639 --> 00:14:27.440
He did, yes.
00:14:27.600 --> 00:14:28.240
Yes, he did.
00:14:28.480 --> 00:14:29.919
He had that when he was a student here.
00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:39.600
That's what I I remember several things about Halen, but I do remember I would pull up in the parking lot and I would see that camel truck, and I would think, that would be neat to have one.
00:14:39.840 --> 00:14:40.240
Really?
00:14:40.480 --> 00:14:40.639
No.
00:14:41.039 --> 00:14:44.720
I I would never use it like Halen probably has, but I just thought that's pretty cool.
00:14:44.960 --> 00:14:47.519
Well, really, when we started dating, he didn't have that anymore.
00:14:47.600 --> 00:14:50.080
So he grew and matured from that too.
00:14:50.159 --> 00:14:52.000
So so he doesn't have any more?
00:14:52.159 --> 00:14:54.399
Well, he has it, but uh, you know, he doesn't drive it.
00:14:54.720 --> 00:14:56.240
So what does he do with it?
00:14:56.559 --> 00:14:58.240
Um just sits there.
00:14:58.480 --> 00:14:58.879
Okay, okay.
00:14:59.039 --> 00:14:59.440
Just sits there.
00:14:59.679 --> 00:15:00.559
Is it on the market?
00:15:00.879 --> 00:15:01.840
I don't know, maybe.
00:15:02.000 --> 00:15:02.879
You want to make an offer?
00:15:03.120 --> 00:15:03.759
No, I don't.
00:15:03.919 --> 00:15:06.720
I'll I'll make an offer on that if you make an offer on my motorcycle.
00:15:06.960 --> 00:15:07.360
Oh no.
00:15:07.519 --> 00:15:07.679
Okay.
00:15:07.919 --> 00:15:08.240
Oh no.
00:15:08.559 --> 00:15:10.559
Okay, then we're at a stalemate there.
00:15:10.799 --> 00:15:11.919
We're at a stalemate.
00:15:12.399 --> 00:15:15.679
So you are now a member of the Williams Baptist University faculty.
00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:16.399
Yes.
00:15:16.639 --> 00:15:20.000
You are starting your first year in the psychology department.
00:15:20.240 --> 00:15:20.480
Yes.
00:15:20.639 --> 00:15:22.720
And what is it you're teaching for us?
00:15:23.200 --> 00:15:28.559
I am um assistant professor of psychology in child and family studies.
00:15:28.879 --> 00:15:31.039
And so I'm teaching It's a mouthful.
00:15:31.279 --> 00:15:32.559
It is, it is.
00:15:32.799 --> 00:15:43.679
Um, I'm teaching uh Gen Psych, um, intro into counseling interventions, um, American family class, and history and systems.
00:15:44.399 --> 00:15:48.399
So junior faculty member, first year, first semester.
00:15:48.639 --> 00:15:48.879
Yes.
00:15:49.039 --> 00:15:51.120
I'm trying to think, have you made a week yet?
00:15:51.279 --> 00:15:52.879
I guess today's the first week.
00:15:53.360 --> 00:15:54.080
Um yes, it is.
00:15:54.240 --> 00:15:54.960
Today's the first week.
00:15:55.360 --> 00:15:55.679
Survived.
00:15:55.759 --> 00:15:56.320
How's it going?
00:15:56.559 --> 00:15:57.679
It's going really well.
00:15:58.000 --> 00:16:00.399
I am, I I have loved it.
00:16:00.639 --> 00:16:03.840
And so the thing you never thought you could envision yourself doing.
00:16:04.159 --> 00:16:04.559
Yes.
00:16:04.720 --> 00:16:06.320
And you know what's crazy?
00:16:06.559 --> 00:16:10.559
So when I was in high school, I actually, I don't know what those things are.
00:16:10.639 --> 00:16:18.000
At the end of the year, whenever they vote on things about you, anyway, I got voted most likely to teach.
00:16:18.159 --> 00:16:20.879
And I remember thinking, I have never taught anything.
00:16:21.200 --> 00:16:21.759
What an odd thing.
00:16:22.480 --> 00:16:25.759
And there's no like there's so many other people that would want to be teachers.
00:16:25.840 --> 00:16:27.600
I was like so surprised that I got that.
00:16:27.679 --> 00:16:28.960
But I think that just shows the Lord's.
00:16:29.200 --> 00:16:30.559
Well, somebody in that vote was a prophet.
00:16:30.639 --> 00:16:30.879
Yeah.
00:16:31.120 --> 00:16:31.600
They called it.
00:16:31.759 --> 00:16:31.919
Yeah.
00:16:32.159 --> 00:16:32.559
There you go.
00:16:32.799 --> 00:16:36.080
I just that whenever actually, whenever I was thinking about this job, I thought about that moment.
00:16:36.159 --> 00:16:37.919
And I was like, the Lord knows even then.
00:16:38.159 --> 00:16:39.679
You should have put that on your resume.
00:16:39.919 --> 00:16:45.360
You need to hire me because I was voted by my graduating class most likely to teach.
00:16:45.440 --> 00:16:46.399
You gotta hire me.
00:16:46.639 --> 00:16:47.759
I'll update it this afternoon.
00:16:48.080 --> 00:16:48.879
Okay, there you go.
00:16:49.200 --> 00:16:49.840
There you go.
00:16:50.080 --> 00:17:00.799
So finished your first week reflections on that experience thus far, knowing you're on the front end of the long game here.
00:17:01.519 --> 00:17:10.960
Um I'm excited because I've actually had several students come up to me um interested in missions, which is just so funny.
00:17:11.200 --> 00:17:11.519
Okay.
00:17:11.759 --> 00:17:12.079
Yeah.
00:17:12.319 --> 00:17:16.799
And also, um, when I first started at Williams, um, Dr.
00:17:16.880 --> 00:17:22.319
Rhodes was my um Gin Psych professor who was also, you know, on the mission field.
00:17:22.400 --> 00:17:23.680
And so That's right.
00:17:23.839 --> 00:17:24.319
Yeah.
00:17:24.640 --> 00:17:28.880
So looking back, was there any kind of uh influence of Dr.
00:17:28.960 --> 00:17:36.799
Rhodes upon you while you were a student here in psychology and then cultivating that love and desire for missions?
00:17:37.200 --> 00:17:38.480
Absolutely, absolutely.
00:17:38.799 --> 00:17:57.200
I mean, um, I didn't start off a psych major, um, but once I took his class and he talked a lot about his missions in his class, and I was like, okay, well, I want to do missions and I like psychology, so I guess I can do both.
00:17:57.519 --> 00:18:00.240
How does somebody like psychology?
00:18:00.960 --> 00:18:02.559
Explain that to me.
00:18:03.039 --> 00:18:07.039
Um, you don't like learning about yourself and other people.
00:18:07.759 --> 00:18:13.519
Boy, you put me on the uh do I like learning about myself?
00:18:13.680 --> 00:18:17.680
At this point in my life, I think I have learned all I want to know.
00:18:17.920 --> 00:18:22.640
Yeah, it you know, it can be a wild place, the wild west in your on mine.
00:18:22.720 --> 00:18:24.240
So that's fun, you know.
00:18:24.559 --> 00:18:28.640
I really for me, um, I do love psychology.
00:18:28.799 --> 00:18:30.079
I love talking to people.
00:18:30.240 --> 00:18:38.160
Um, that's why I wanted to be a counselor because I like um, yeah, just hearing about people's experiences and so a lot of discipleship.
00:18:38.400 --> 00:18:45.039
So a lot of people, and I one time I thought this way, is psychology and counseling are the one and same thing.
00:18:45.200 --> 00:18:48.160
That if you do one, you do the other, but that's not true.
00:18:48.400 --> 00:18:49.119
No, it's not true.
00:18:49.359 --> 00:18:53.680
There are a lot of psychology majors that want nothing to do with counseling or have no interest in that.
00:18:53.839 --> 00:18:57.599
So help our listeners understand the interplay between the two.
00:18:57.759 --> 00:19:00.240
Obviously, there's a connection, but not always.
00:19:00.640 --> 00:19:01.440
Not always.
00:19:01.599 --> 00:19:08.079
Um, psychology, you can focus on research um and doing studies.
00:19:08.319 --> 00:19:16.079
Um, I do feel like for me, it I was always interested in the um becoming a counselor.
00:19:16.400 --> 00:19:33.920
I think also with the child and family studies um degree, that also gives a lot of opportunity for um people who want to do marriage and family, or even um, you know, if they plan on working at a church, you know, there's lots of pastors that obviously do um pastoral counseling and things like that.
00:19:34.000 --> 00:19:42.480
So it's it's good to um be able to have some kind of background in knowing how families are developed and work and you know.
00:19:44.079 --> 00:19:45.759
Okay, I'm gonna put you on the spot here.
00:19:45.920 --> 00:19:52.240
I want to dig down into the relationship between psychology and counseling and missions.
00:19:52.480 --> 00:19:54.160
And I know this is unfair.
00:19:54.319 --> 00:20:00.400
I confess it on the front end, but I'm gonna go there anyway, and maybe we can talk our way through it.
00:20:00.480 --> 00:20:03.119
I let you talk your way through it, and I'll just listen.
00:20:03.440 --> 00:20:03.759
Okay.
00:20:04.559 --> 00:20:05.680
You love missions.
00:20:05.920 --> 00:20:06.160
Yes.
00:20:06.319 --> 00:20:12.880
You love counseling and psychology as you are on the front end of this professorial ministry.
00:20:14.319 --> 00:20:19.839
How are you envisioning this unfolding not two separate things?
00:20:20.000 --> 00:20:26.160
But I'm thinking, I'm surmising here that maybe in your mind you're seeing these converging in some way.
00:20:26.960 --> 00:20:45.599
What does that potentially look like that I'm going to continue in this academic discipline and this professional teaching, but I'm never letting go of the passion and the desire to be missional and to be missionary, my identity?
00:20:46.000 --> 00:20:47.599
That is a great question.
00:20:47.839 --> 00:20:59.119
Um, I think that it was very clear to me my first week so far is that there are several students that are interested in missions.
00:20:59.519 --> 00:21:04.559
And um Are they psychology majors or are they looking at the counseling as a major?
00:21:04.880 --> 00:21:09.200
Um they they I think a couple of them are freshmen.
00:21:09.440 --> 00:21:10.240
So I don't know.
00:21:10.319 --> 00:21:12.319
I think one of them was in psychology.
00:21:12.720 --> 00:21:15.119
Whatever their major is, it will change next semester.
00:21:15.599 --> 00:21:17.680
Yeah, yeah, you have freedom to change.
00:21:18.000 --> 00:21:29.440
But um the great part about Williams and the culture of Williams is that um you can go to your professors, you can sit down, you can talk to them, and you can have a real um conversation.
00:21:29.599 --> 00:21:30.880
They really are like mentors.
00:21:30.960 --> 00:21:33.359
Um, and I remember that from my time at Williams.
00:21:33.759 --> 00:21:48.400
And so um I think that that the Lord, it was just really a gift to me this week to see that um there's so many students passionate about missions, because that's me pouring into the next generation.
00:21:48.960 --> 00:22:06.319
And um, it is such a good opportunity for young students to do missions um because it's simpler in a lot of ways because there's not houses that they own and cars and kids and spouses, you know, they um can pick up and go more easily.
00:22:06.480 --> 00:22:20.720
So for me to be able to um cast vision and to encourage and to support and to pray for um to answer questions because I'm sure there's a million questions that they probably have about that.
00:22:20.960 --> 00:22:29.039
And um yeah I'm excited to just sit with students and help them walk through that process because I had professors that did that for me.
00:22:29.680 --> 00:22:32.240
And it was, I mean I still think about it today.
00:22:32.400 --> 00:22:35.519
So do you ever envision taking students overseas?
00:22:36.880 --> 00:22:47.119
You know I have not thought about that but that would be something that I'm open to would I be interested in leading them that is maybe I would be like an assistant.
00:22:47.519 --> 00:22:47.839
Okay.
00:22:48.640 --> 00:22:50.160
One or the other will work.
00:22:50.319 --> 00:22:58.799
Yeah yeah would you take them back to where you have previously served or would you explore other areas of service I would do both.
00:22:58.960 --> 00:23:26.160
I'd be interested in both okay um you know that would take some more of the Lord's like comforting and leading but let's get through this semester yeah let's do that first so I mentioned how you got here this time and I said I was going to come back to the other so I'm back to the other now how did Kendall the high school senior how did she get to Williams and when she came here what was she what were her dreams?
00:23:26.240 --> 00:23:27.440
What was she thinking?
00:23:27.759 --> 00:23:37.519
Um I'm from the area I'm from Brooklyn Really I'm from Goobertown but you know socially acceptable to say Brooklyn is it though?
00:23:38.160 --> 00:23:40.400
What's wrong what is unacceptable about Goobertown?
00:23:40.640 --> 00:23:42.960
You know it's not it was actually out of Goobertown.
00:23:43.200 --> 00:23:54.160
Yes that was my dad's favorite thing to say on vacation that we were from Goobertown so what kind of reactions did you get oh gosh I bet yeah yeah okay so you're a girl from Goobertown.
00:23:54.319 --> 00:23:56.960
Yes Goobertown Arkansas and how did you get here?
00:23:57.279 --> 00:23:58.640
And why did you get here?
00:23:59.119 --> 00:24:21.680
Well um I have always heard about Williams just because it's close and again I wanted to do missions I wanted the Christian education um I wanted the opportunity to be able to go on mission trips with the college and um just be um invested in in that way and so for me I I don't think I applied to any other colleges.
00:24:21.759 --> 00:24:23.039
I think I just applied to Williams.
00:24:23.200 --> 00:24:29.039
Wow yeah did you come in as a psych major or is that something that happened after you arrived it happened after I arrived.
00:24:29.279 --> 00:24:30.240
And it was in that class with Dr.
00:24:30.319 --> 00:24:34.799
Rose yes okay yes in my gin psych class and freshman sophomore year?
00:24:35.039 --> 00:24:35.920
It was my freshman year.
00:24:36.319 --> 00:24:41.119
Early on early on and I walked in and he started talking about all the psychology things.
00:24:41.200 --> 00:24:46.400
I think he even wrote in like Korean on the board and I was like wow this is interesting.
00:24:46.559 --> 00:24:52.000
And then he started talking about his time overseas and I was like okay yes just chasing a rabbit here how long was Dr.
00:24:52.079 --> 00:24:53.759
Rhodes on the mission field you recall?
00:24:54.000 --> 00:24:54.720
I don't know.
00:24:54.960 --> 00:24:58.079
Um I I I don't know I think it was years.
00:24:58.319 --> 00:25:14.000
Yeah it'd been a while if you can write in Korean you're you're there for a while yeah he's very smart so but yeah so what are your dreams for your program because you're part of the psychology department and that is a strong department.
00:25:14.160 --> 00:25:27.359
Yes it's one of our top majors five years from now what do you see yourself doing here that feels like a long ways away doesn't it um on my first week it'll be here before you know it.
00:25:27.680 --> 00:26:00.640
I'm hoping to um one be more comfortable well you know my thing your first year of survive yeah you're just prepping prepping prepping year two you're gonna look back and think okay redo redo redo by year three you're thinking okay this is starting to shape up in the way I want it to be so give yourself some grace here I think that my time at Williams as a student was really marked by discipleship.
00:26:00.799 --> 00:26:23.279
I had so many people pouring into my life I had professors I had upperclassmen um the Christian ministries department I mean I just had so many people and when I think about what I want to do and my time here I think about that and I think that I would love to pour into students um I would love to help them.
00:26:23.359 --> 00:26:44.640
This is such a hard time in young people's life I mean there's so many major decisions that they have to make and so to be able to listen and to use my counseling skills um not as like they're not like my clients but just the skills that I've learned um to help navigate them, guide them, support them, pray for them that's what I'm excited about.
00:26:44.960 --> 00:26:45.519
Me too.
00:26:46.480 --> 00:26:49.839
You are well suited and well prepared to do that very thing.
00:26:50.079 --> 00:27:02.880
And I'm looking forward to seeing how the Lord uses you in discipling our students for service as a missionary service somehow with a psychology major or just in general thank you.
00:27:03.200 --> 00:27:05.279
We're we're gonna be better for you being here.
00:27:05.440 --> 00:27:08.079
We're grateful the Lord led you here twice.
00:27:08.480 --> 00:27:29.119
Twice yes that's exciting as a student and then as a member of our faculty and if you haven't you need to go back and look at the video I will you know I it I think it got um whenever I was preparing to go I think it was taken down yeah and so I'll protect you for that yeah I don't know if I want to see it or not but I don't like to listen myself preach.
00:27:29.680 --> 00:27:44.400
So I leave the room I get it but maybe I'll just mute it and turn on the closed capsule I'm sure Bill can share the link with you and you can look in and maybe just think okay that's who I was then this is who I am now I'm not the same person.
00:27:44.720 --> 00:27:46.880
It'll probably be a good time of reflection.
00:27:47.119 --> 00:27:49.200
Yeah yeah that's what counselors do.
00:27:49.359 --> 00:27:58.400
Yes absolutely you're learning I I feel like I've been kind of under the microscope the whole time we've been together like you're doing an under the table diagnostic.
00:27:58.480 --> 00:28:09.279
No this poor man he needs this and this and this that is always what people think though they're always like can you read my thoughts like no but can I read your body language?
00:28:09.359 --> 00:28:10.480
Maybe I'm just kidding.
00:28:10.960 --> 00:28:16.079
Now I'm very very we're gonna we're gonna draw this to an end before I get under the microscope all the way.
00:28:16.400 --> 00:28:25.039
Kendall thank you we are glad the Lord led you to Williams and thank you for taking time out of your very busy first week schedule to come and visit with us on LifeWork.
00:28:25.200 --> 00:28:25.599
Thank you.
00:28:25.759 --> 00:28:26.319
Thank you
