speaker-1: Hello everyone, welcome to another episode of Console Combat. I am as always one of your host John and with me is the Barnacle By boy boy to my mermaid man. Dean.
speaker-2: I love how you screwed up the intro.
speaker-1: I screwed it up because boy is just such a fucking hard word. Boy.
speaker-2: Not for Kratos. Boy. Boy. Boy.
speaker-0: Boy. Boy.
speaker-1: El boy.
speaker-0: Boy.
speaker-1: Alright, Mr. Judge, could you say that in French? Les boys.
speaker-2: Can you say that in Spanish? El boy.
speaker-0: Boy and oil.
speaker-1: Hell boy. Please, Mandarin. King Boy.
speaker-2: Whoa. Ooh, that was a that was a little much.
speaker-1: I think ching is is a safe word, I think.
speaker-2: But you're riding that line. It's a real that's a real thin line.
speaker-1: So I went without an accent for a reason.
speaker-2: 'Cause I was gonna go with Portuguese next, but okay.
speaker-1: You know you know Portuguese. No, but you know enough words.
speaker-2: Not fluently I know words and phrases. That's why I was gonna go. Okay, and now Portuguese. boy.
speaker-1: boy. boy. it all it all comes to Mickey. boy. except for the news. The news doesn't come to Mickey, at least not this week, but Arbiter. Good. We need you to news us.
speaker-0: Alright, combatants, before this week's main event, John and Dean must enter the drop zone.
speaker-1: Alright, Dean. What let's
speaker-2: Yeah.
speaker-1: start off with Epic Games.
speaker-2: So the free games on Epic this week, that would be the Epic Game Store, if you didn't figure that out. we have Out of Sight and Terrascape. Out of Sight is the you're a blind girl seeing things through the teddy bear. Terascape is a city builder. Both of those are free from October or from now until October 15th at 11 a.m. Following that, we have Agent A, a puzzle in disguise. Which is a indie adventure puzzle game. you can kind of figure out the context there. and we also have Bad Cheese, which is definitely inspired by the I guess legalization of using Mickey Mo
speaker-0: Wells.
speaker-2: and similar properties. It's very similarly animated. to like Mouse PI, but it's like a cursed version. It is a psychological horror inspired by the eerie charm of nineteen twenties animation. And yes, I can confirm for a fact that it is based on the original Mickey Mouse because there was a screen or a picture of Mickey like Steamboat Willie on yeah, yeah, it's actually in the game. so yeah, both of those are free from October fifteenth until the twenty second.
speaker-1: Cool. I went a little backwards this week and let you do Epic Games drops before I gave this week's video games of the week. So let me tell you guys about video games of the week. starting with the 13th. SpongeBob SquarePants, Titans of the Tide. On the Switch. Valor Mortis on the PS5, the Xbox, and the PC. Planet Zoo 2 on the Xbox, the PS5, and the PC. On the 14th, Warhammer 40k Bolt Gun 2 on the PS5, the Xbox, and the PC. On the 15th, Castlevania, Belmont's Curse on the PS5, the Xbox, the Switch and the PC. So you like to play Castlevania?
speaker-2: Don't they have ever played it? Okay.
speaker-1: it's a Metal Gear, awesome quote. also on the fifteenth it takes two on the switch two.
speaker-2: That's an old game now.
speaker-1: I know. It's kind of
speaker-2: Twenty fifteen?
speaker-1: But I mean it's coming out on the Switch too, so it's just a port of an old game. Maybe more like seventeen.
speaker-2: No, sorry, I was thinking a way out.
speaker-1: same creator, right?
speaker-2: no. No. it takes two
speaker-1: It was flip fiction, right?
speaker-2: the same developers, yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. I I don't know why I was thinking a way out.
speaker-1: I don't know either. okay. on the sixteenth, Resident Evil two deluxe on the Switch 2, Resident Evil 3 on the Switch 2, and Resident Evil 4 Gold on the Switch 2.
speaker-2: For other things are gonna look terrible.
speaker-1: maybe. I haven't seen who's graphics in person, so I don't know. Probably not good though. that's it for the game drops up until the nineteenth, which is when next week's episode will drop. so let's get into the news.
speaker-2: The newsy news. Alright, so you're probably a everyone listening is probably a user of Discord. well guess what? they have had another security breach, because of course they did, and the hackers have stolen millions of email addresses and the IDs. In a deliberate multi-stage attack. it was let's see. Discord IDs, usernames, IP addresses, and even location info for twenty-eight million users were partly copied by the hackers. it was done, I believe it's saying also user IDs, like for age verification. So kinda goes into what I've said before about age verification being kind of shit and stupid. yeah, it's funny because the attack happened Literally like a year from the time last year that they got hacked with the same thing. So at this point, Discord is basically just an open source repository for people's identification. yeah. So just be aware of that with Discord. Huh?
speaker-1: And I love twenty twenty six.
speaker-2: it's fantastic. so a lot of people have you know, been trying to make Discord alternatives. there's a a few that have some good progress going. that you could run either yourself or use, you know, just as an as an alternative to Discord. so you don't have fucking, you know, buy this, buy that, buy this, buy this, fuck you, popping up every time you open it. there is a alternate version that's similar called Stoat. there is also Fluxer and Matrix. I believe Fluxer and Matrix both can be hosted yourself if that's something that you are also a psychopath and like to do. but yeah, it's just gonna keep getting worse. more GTA 6 news. Cyberleak has returned. And has published a twenty-four-minute gameplay video that is basically it contains a lot of kind of shot-for-shot remakes of the Netflix extended cut trailer that was released. And except instead of, you know, just being, he just copied the footage. No no no. He's doing that, but the characters are naked in the in the footage. So it gives reason to believe that Cyberleak does indeed have an actual build of the game and it's not just leaked videos or something or w you know, making something up like he actually has or she or they or whoever Cyberleak is has an actual build of GTA six and was doing that because this at this point he's just trolling Rockstar. I would not be fully surprised if CyberLeak decide and this one actually didn't have any of the crypto crap in there. if Cyberleak goes and just leaks the entire build of the game early, like a week before launch, and then people on PC are able to play the game like before console. Honestly would be hilarious. I have not watched the video. mainly because you have to get it direct from the source and really don't feel like going on that kind of a website on my computer. So yeah you can't really find it online anywhere because obviously if anyone's posting it they'll probably get DMCA'd. And also again the nudity. Like both characters are nude in his are there recently uploaded video. Just another L for Rockstar. I saw you were gonna say something about that, Jonathan.
speaker-1: no, I was just saying it's fucking hilarious that they were naked and I just this person, whoever Cyberleaks is, is probably modern day, like just I can't even come up with a good historical figure to compare them to. Like
speaker-2: They say don't say Robin Hood because they're not robbing and giving it away. They're just using it they were, at least, using it to promote a cryptocurrency.
speaker-1: I in the in the most unironic or maybe ironic way, it's almost like a modern day geek is con because he's getting everywhere.
speaker-2: Yeah, yeah. Definitely getting a lot of media coverage, that's for sure.
speaker-1: Yeah.
speaker-2: all right, so moving on to Xbox. So apparently, even though Microsoft is doing its continuation of layoffs throughout the Xbox division, you know, the whole one year restructure thing, apparently they are now making a new division in Xbox called XP. Which will take the lead on film and television, consumer products, strategic partnerships, and live experiences, with a focus on how people experience our franchises beyond the games themselves. So it seems like Xbox is so down bad for
speaker-0: Ha ha.
speaker-2: having good games, so instead they are now pivoting to also trying to make movies and shows. maybe they'll Finally get a decent halo adaptation to silver or big screen.
speaker-1: I I'm just gonna say it it doesn't surprise me that they're doing this. Everybody else is. Fucking literally everybody else is. Resident Evil, the movie we're talking about today, one of the intro credits, a PlayStation movie. Amazon covered Last of Us. No no not Last of Us, Twisted Metal. No, was that Amazon? No. No. No, they did Secret Level. That's right. Paramount did Twisted Metal. HBO did The Last of Us. Amazon did Fallout. That's right.
speaker-2: H yeah, HBO did Last of Us, yeah. Yeah.
speaker-1: I mean I'm surprised Apple hasn't stepped into the video game genres yet. But it's it seems inevitable that all these game industries, the I mean the game studios, the big ones, I mean not maybe necessarily the studios but
speaker-2: Necessarily have its own game development studio.
speaker-1: No, but they could.
speaker-2: And then Nintendo usually just licenses out their characters. Yeah.
speaker-1: What what I mean more to say is like the big companies like Sony, Microsoft, they all have some kind of a foot in the film industry. It's not surprising.
speaker-2: Yeah, you're not wrong. It's just just because, you know, except for a few examples, like original ideas are pretty much dead when it comes to, you know, the big blockbuster movies.
speaker-1: Well the big blockbuster movies are also adaptations of comic books.
speaker-2: Yeah, exactly. that that's what I'm saying is they're not necessarily original ideas, they're adaptations or sequels to existing IPs. Yeah. you know, you had something like like Digger that's coming or that's out. that's, you know, an established director but with an original idea, and of course people haven't really seen it. and some people were saying, it's bad, but it's like If you've seen the director's other movies, which I'm not even gonna try to pronounce his fucking name because I'm terrible at it. that's just his style, kinda like a Wes And yeah, Wes Anderson film, or you know directors like that. But you've got original things going on like obsession. Yeah. Like even Resident Evil, like we talk about it later, but it's a fantastic movie. Based on an existing IP. It's an adaptation.
speaker-1: Loose adaptation, but adaptation of
speaker-2: Yeah, it's an adaptation of the universe. so yeah, it it it it doesn't surprise me, but the timing kind of does. Also makes me
speaker-1: But yeah.
speaker-2: Yeah, but it also makes me wonder how long they've been working on this. Because that's not something you can just immediately spin up.
speaker-1: Well, you gotta think that there was Ashwarma and and and whatever amount of people she had in a boardroom saying, Listen guys, we're getting crushed. We have opportunities
speaker-2: We're getting crushed. It's our own fault.
speaker-1: We need to we need to start doing the thinking outside the box thing that other companies like I and I hate to even use a fast food chain, but Burger King of all of the fast food chains recently, they've been the most grounded in listening to their their customers.
speaker-2: Really? Are they still making their employees say thank you and if they don't then the AI listening to their fucking over the box conversation punish them?
speaker-1: I have no idea about the employees. All I'm saying
speaker-2: That's a thing.
speaker-1: the CEO or some some people in upper, upper, upper, upper, upper management started like doing the thing that Ashrashwarma does where she listens to like feedback from people.
speaker-2: Wow, the bare minimum of a CEO.
speaker-1: I mean it's not unusual for them to pass the buck on that job.
speaker-2: Yeah, and then ignore what their advisors say.
speaker-1: I think it still speaks something to t I mean, even her, she actually does the same thing, literally goes and sees what some people are saying and tries to respond to them either directly or with action. And that's my point is it's nice to see that there are at least a couple of people. in the world that are willing to do shit like that. Like we know the guy, I can't remember the fuck his name is right now, but the guy that created Fortnite uses his money to buy land. It's it's I mean it's not necessarily the same thing. he's using it for c animal conservation.
speaker-2: okay.
speaker-1: I mean he he uses his money for good. Asha Swarma's trying to redistribute what she's got Because she's got limited funds is my guess. But it does look like she tries to put everyone in the same room and come up with ideas collectively rather than individually, which I think is a clever or not even clever, but it's a smarter move there, you know, compared to what fucking companies like Sony are doing where they're not listening to the people, not listening to their consumers, not listening to the fucking overwhelming online backlash. Asha maybe unfortunately has to do the layoffs to make the money work, but if she's doing it, she's doing it well more or less is what it's at least from my perspective.
speaker-2: Makes sense. Yeah. Yeah. I mean we'll see what happens.
speaker-1: I would like to see some of their their properties become bigger things. Like I know wasn't wasn't Gears a big originally a Microsoft property?
speaker-0: Eeeh.
speaker-2: E no Epic. It was an Epic game distributed by Microsoft Game Studios.
speaker-1: Alright, so that wouldn't count. So basically halo.
speaker-2: It was Cliff Blazinski who was running Epic at the time. That was back when Epic was kinda cool because they made Gears of War. God, how long has that been? Twenty years now.
speaker-1: Nice.
speaker-2: Yeah. anyway. moving on to the last thing I have here. You might find this interesting as well. boy. so are you aware of a Kojima project that was exclusively a demo?
speaker-1: Yep, I already know where you're going with this one. Yep. Uh-huh.
speaker-2: and caused certain PS4s to become stupidly expensive and collectible.
speaker-1: Yep, still are.
speaker-2: Yep. And well not for long. And the the game that we're talking about is PT, which was a way to try to bring back how Silent Hill used to be and got cancelled and the Demo was not only delisted, but also like Sony tried to purge it or Konami or whoever. So you couldn't even download it if you had it in your account. so there is now a way to play it successfully using emulation on PC. And not only is it allowing you to run the full demo, but you can run it with DLSS 4.5. AMD FSR mods all kinds of stuff the frame rate is no longer tied to PS4 hardware it has native resolution dl a and fsr like yeah it's crazy basically what you need to do is if you wanted to so say let's assume assume That you have the demo still on your PlayStation 4. So you would basically copy that to a flash drive and then bring that into your computer so that you have your copy of PT, right? Your copy. And you would go to the GitHub page for Lorene Xavier. L O R E A N Xavier. spell that yourself. and the project is PT-PC. And you can go to the releases and you can find they recently updated 10 hours ago of where you can download the software to run the your copy of PT demo using the software so it's basically an emulator for one specific title
speaker-0: yeah.
speaker-2: I mean if fucking Konami, I think, and Sony don't want people to be able to play this super interesting demo, then well it's basically abandoned wear at this point, as far as I'm concerned. So maybe you have a friend you could grab a copy from. Friend? Maybe named Annie. Sure, they have an archive. so yeah, fully playable. this is definitely something I will do because I Definitely still have my copy of PT. So yeah. I am definitely curious to try this out because I was able to try getting that to run on the regular PS4 emulator. It wasn't really the best. There was a lot of graphical issues. But this is still actively being worked on, like I said as of recording. This was updated 10 hours ago. So that apparently also works on Apple Silicon on macOS. Crazy. That's what I had. What did you have?
speaker-1: I guess I'll just kinda jump right off of what you just said because I also have some interesting stuff about things that were never part of the plan, so to speak.
speaker-2: Guess we've better change of plans.
speaker-1: Modders get original PS2 discs running on the PS5. A jailbroken PS5 can now launch original PS2 discs after a one time dump of each game.
speaker-2: I mean that doesn't surprise me. I mean i it's probably running in a software emulation. I mean if you're running a jailbroken PS five, with the new exploit, which is the name I've already forgotten. then I'm sh it you're basically just running custom software and then it's just an emulator. that definitely is cool because I also did see something briefly about you know, if you have a jailbroken PS4, then you c there's a port of RPCS three, which is the PS3 emulator, that lets you play PS3 games on your PS4. so I guess kind of in that same vein. but again, you have to have a jailbroken PS4 or five to be able to do that. So it basically at this point, like if you wanted to play every PlayStation title on original or PlayStation. Maybe not original hardware, but official Sony hardware. You would have to still have two consoles. You'd have to have a original version of the PS3, which good fucking luck making sure it runs still. that is has hardware emulation of PS1 and two. there is a software one, but it's not as good. and then also a PS5 to do PS4 and five.
speaker-1: Sounds like a lot of work.
speaker-2: Yeah, 'cause at this point it seems like if you just have a gaming PC, the emulators are gonna be coming out here pretty fucking quick where it's just like, Hey, every Sony game PC, whether they want you to or not.
speaker-1: True fucking story.
speaker-2: Like if I can put in my copy of fucking the Dark Souls or not Dark Souls, Demon Souls for the PS3 into my Linux PC and open it in a PS3 emulator, I think we're fucking beyond Sony at this point.
speaker-1: Yeah, probably. Yeah, that's that's I think that's the best way to put that.
speaker-2: Because I have a massive stash of PS3 games, most of which were free. Thank you, random person on that Facebook buy nothing group. and I can just pop them in and play them. Yeah.
speaker-1: Fair enough. Like I
speaker-2: Unintentionally had a supported drive.
speaker-1: the only other thing that I have that's not gonna be basically the games that I've come across this week. nothing specific that I can pull up without going and digging and I'm not going and digging. Matt Tat has announced that he is bringing indie horror games and online projects to the big screen with Blumhouse.
speaker-2: First you had my attention, then you had my disappointment.
speaker-1: Blumas is alright, they're not terrifying.
speaker-2: I mean, don't get me wrong, they have a brilliant business strategy. Spend a couple million buc a movie and then make like thirty million back. But at the same time, like you get what you kinda fucking pay for.
speaker-1: Yep.
speaker-2: So there's that. What the fuck is this file? I done there it is. Jesus Christ. I was trying to find the file. Now I need to see if I have the PG demo in here somewhere. Can't remember which drive it's on. I have so many. I don't think it's on my system.
speaker-1: Well while you look for that, I'm gonna carry on with what I've discovered. this one is from G World Media Games, Instagram. Broken lore Mickey Chan is a horror game where the cute AI study assistant you downloaded falls in love with you and won't let go. It's I think it's kinda like Catherine. It's
speaker-2: Interesting.
speaker-1: very anime, obviously.
speaker-2: Damn, where's the power cube?
speaker-1: It's being published with soft source by Serafini Productions, coming out for the PS5, the Xbox Series X S N P C V Steam and Epic targeting in 2027. Steam is still listing it as TVA. Does look kinda interesting though. yeah.
speaker-2: Okay.
speaker-1: from Petty Juice Gar Juice Juice Juice G U S? J U S?
speaker-2: Careful there.
speaker-1: I I'm not trying to be inappropriate, but it's I'm guessing it's French. Petit jus or jus games.
speaker-2: Joe.
speaker-1: It's P-E-T-I-T J-U-S games. So it's hard to really go anywhere correctly. the game is called OMP O Empire Ward Off Thy Rot. A meditative survival game where you carry a cursed artifact across a dead world. Highly pixelated top down asymmetric game. Not asymmetric, isometric, sorry. looks very intro interesting. it's like I said, highly pixelated, but it's kind of like what is that that typing game that used to exist? Zork. Zork? Zork.
speaker-2: Zorg.
speaker-1: I kind of like feel like this is that, but with images that were created on the Nintendo Game Boy printer.
speaker-2: Interesting.
speaker-1: the best way I can describe it. It it looks interesting. It looks very basic in the design, but it looks interesting. Also on G World Media Games Instagram, a game that's gonna feel very much like you're playing a even more cursed version of the Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask. The game is called Evil Moon Unspoken. It is a boomer shooter Metroidvania where a cursed city kills anyone who speaks, so a silent nun does the shooting.
speaker-2: Does she have any lines? No. None.
speaker-1: No, none. You play Silencia, a vow bound and armed. The city of Abadoc sits under a malediction of of the moon. Say a word out loud and the moon strikes you down where you stand. So the people who can still function there are the ones who already took a vow of silence, which is why the church sends nuns into the streets now that monsters have taken them. The shooting is a pure boomer shooter, fast. Loud, no cover, no regenerating anything. The structure around it is Metroidvania, so Abidox is is one connected map that opens up as you get stronger rather than a corridor of levels. The pixel art leans into an into the nastiness of the premise, all red skies, and the enormous burning moon that watches you work. Next bolt produced or developed published in by Burning Planet Digital coming next year to PC.
speaker-2: The planet is burning. This a joke.
speaker-0: Mm-hmm.
speaker-1: This Instagram is I'm just Jared. the game. Let me see. What is this game? Vincent. V-I-N-C-I-T. Combine elemental bullets together that you can punch and parkour off of to defeat your enemies in the wildest co-op indie first person shooter game I've seen in a while. it's getting a playtest this month on Steam. It is like drawn together craziness in black and white with color. being thrown around randomly.
speaker-2: Interesting.
speaker-1: It looks pretty fucking cool. Every bullet you craft and shoot becomes an actual physical object.
speaker-2: I mean isn't that what bullets are?
speaker-1: No, like it bec it itself turns into like a thing that you can punch or kick or jump off of.
speaker-2: Mm, okay. I see what you mean.
speaker-1: It's hand drawn too, I believe. It looks I mean if it was not I'd be surprised. Looks really good. Hi.
speaker-2: Nice. Nice. Nice.
speaker-0: Not
speaker-1: this is Playtester HQ, Guns of Esheton is a first person souls like shooter set in an apocalyptic western by art director Victor Antonov. You are fragile, outmatched, and stuck surviving a world of dust, blood, and occult horror. This is not a reflex shooter. Every bullet matters and every gun has its own character. Study enemies for weaknesses, commit to your choices, and forge your own style with a gunpowder and prayers, solo or in co-op. Demo available now, coming out on PC and consoles. Looks like it's gonna be a good time. IGN this one, this is a fun one.
speaker-2: There you are, little bastard.
speaker-1: Or you find it?
speaker-2: I found my P my Silent Hills PT demo. Nice. It was on the other computer on a different drive. Nice.
speaker-1: Jay and Silent Bob weed farming simulator game has been announced. Jay and Silent Bob's joint venture.
speaker-2: Of course.
speaker-1: No surprise, of course, we know. We kne we knew it was coming.
speaker-2: Is that just schedule one?
speaker-1: Probably. this game is called ballistic.exe. The demo on Steam already. there are 1000 attachments and 200 cartridge types. You just keep customizing guns.
speaker-2: So Borderlands.
speaker-1: Without I think much of a plot. Demo's that now. You get your hands on a declassified military program that takes gun customization way too far. You actually have to handle the firearm yourself from loading by the cartridge by hand to clearing gun jams all while working from sli with slide position movements before you even aim. So you you shoot the gun, you test the gun, and you just get bigger and bigger guns, I guess. It's like an interesting time.
speaker-2: Like Arma without the fun.
speaker-1: Armament. The Pines is also a game that I came across. This one's from Gameology. Meet the Pines, a detective horror RPG where your choices create your own monsters. Fans of psychological thrillers and deep investigative RPGs keep your keep this one on your radar. Publisher Silverlining Interactive and solo developer Kevin Jokums from Studio Abattoire have a Officially unveil the reveal trailer for the Pines, an open world psychological horror RPG set to launch on PC in 2027. You step into the shoes of Edward Walker, a burned-out former detective sent to a secluded therapy retreat nestled deep in the forest after a case goes cold. What promises peace, rest, and rehabilitation quickly turns into a paranoid nightmare reminiscent of Alan Wake and Shutter Island.
speaker-2: Nightmare, nightmare, nightmare, nightmare. yeah, I was actually getting like your description was very Allen White-coated.
speaker-1: Yeah. the game's standout mechanic is its dynamic stalker system. Every resident carries personal trauma and dark secrets, and your choices directly shape their behavior. Say the wrong thing, push an interrogation too far or break someone's trust, and an ordinary neighbor can turn into a relentless stalker actively hunting you through the woods.
speaker-2: Hm. So you just fucking kill when they stalk you, I guess.
speaker-1: I guess so.
speaker-2: Definitely interesting. I would I'd give this a try. I was reading the page description of ballistics.exe or ballistic. And I love how there's under its awards, it's AI free badge. And around the thing it says, I dare you to put some DLSS 5 on this mess, motherfucker.
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-2: 100% handwritten bugs.
speaker-0: But
speaker-1: That's fantastic.
speaker-2: And then the only disclaimer on Steam is the mature content description. The developer describes the content like this. Ballistic.exe may occasionally depict murders of all types, assassinations, war crimes, and other acts of violence.
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-1: At least they cover their
speaker-2: Yeah.
speaker-1: Hell yeah, brother. Hell yeah, brother.
speaker-2: Let's do some war crimes!
speaker-0: Hell yeah.
speaker-1: Alright, I got one more game that I came across that's interesting. the game sorry the Instagram is Love Rio L-U-V-R-E-O-H-H. the weirdest looter shooter ever made. The game is called Canyons. it's wish listable now and this game is completely unpredictable because one second you're shooting at zombie skeletons and the next you're fighting a sentient metal gate that makes sense for some reason. Your guns have mouths, but somehow it still gets weirder. The world has been taken over by the awakening, which is basically a fusion of things with that a fusion of things that live with things that don't live. you're traversing the world with a pirate ship on wheels and a dog that is also a coffin. it looks pretty fucking cool, I gotta say.
speaker-2: Straight bonkers.
speaker-1: BOOM
speaker-0: Bonkers Bobby.
speaker-1: Someone said I'm about to take out all the anger from stumping my toe on chairs throughout the years. Someone said, sounds kinda like a cop cod zombie's Easter egg.
speaker-2: Honestly Yeah, like there was just a steampunk machine sandworm, so. Yeah, that fence just turned into a monster. This is weird, man. I'm kinda with it.
speaker-1: Yeah, I'm digging it. I'm digging it for show. For show for show.
speaker-2: Intradesting.
speaker-1: That's gonna be that. So we gotta get to the next bit. So, Arbiter, let's get to the next bit, shall we?
speaker-2: Abatoir.
speaker-0: Alright! For round two of Oddball October, we're discussing yet another movie! And I can't believe I'm about to say this, it's a Resident Evil movie that's actually good! I never thought we'd see the day, but here we are! So let's talk 2026's Resident Evil from director Zach Kregger.
speaker-1: your emotions are getting so good. It's almost like you're in the room with us. It is. I like it though.
speaker-2: It's kinda creepy.
speaker-1: That.
speaker-0: St.
speaker-1: who this man. yes, we're talking in 2026's Resident Evil by Zach Kregger, a PlayStation movie, as we mentioned earlier. Probably the best thing they've done in a long time. sad to say, but yeah, this movie was great. nothing like any Resident Evil Evil movie that we've seen before. very, very minimal tie ins to any of the games aside from one the set well the setting and the character maybe. it's a real big question mark on the character, but it's pretty indicative if you know the games, at least Resident Evil Two in my opinion. but yeah, movie by Zack Craig, as the arbiter said, very well articulated. my god, excuse me. it is currently sitting at a seven point six out of ten on IMDB or
speaker-2: Mm-hmm.
speaker-1: is it on Rotten Tomatoes?
speaker-2: It is currently sitting at a ninety-six percent on the tomato meter and a ninety-one percent on the popcorn.
speaker-1: What's it got on letterbox?
speaker-2: It has a three point eight
speaker-1: Out of how many?
speaker-2: five.
speaker-1: Killer. Look at this fucking movie based on a video game go.
speaker-2: it's let's make a correction.
speaker-1: Loose.
speaker-2: no. A movie based on a video game franchise directed by a guy who was in who is most famous for, besides his most recent three films he's directed, being in the whitest kids you know.
speaker-1: which I don't even know.
speaker-2: It was a skit comedy show. Kinda like Kids in the Hall or fucking Eric Gondre to to an extent. Keen Peel. Shit like that. SNL type bits, you know. Okay. yeah, he was in that show. And his other two films that have been received You know, one better than the other, but his first one being Barbarian. and then the other one is weapons. Barbarian was 2022, weapons was twenty twenty-five. I have yet to see either of those. They are definitely on my watch list. so they've been there since they came out, essentially. I just haven't gotten around to watching either of them. but I definitely should because I'd like to check out his filmography.
speaker-1: real. and also this movie has grossed approximately two hundred and fifty three point nine million dollars with an estimated budget of only sixty five to seventy five million dollars.
speaker-2: Yeah, it's definitely made money. I think the reason it hasn't done as well financially is simply just because a lot of people look at the name Resident Evil in a movie title and think, ugh, really another one of these. Cause like we talked about Welcome to Raccoon City.
speaker-1: Yep.
speaker-2: And that was fucking dog sh
speaker-1: Shit. Regrettable.
speaker-2: Absolutely fucking dog shit. Like what I don't even remember what I gave that film. Like I try not to think about it.
speaker-1: I remember what you gave it. It was this.
speaker-0: PE GO SUC!
speaker-2: Yes.
speaker-1: that movie was terrible. This movie was not. this is
speaker-2: I gave it a half star.
speaker-1: so same as Return to Silent Hill. Equal Garbage.
speaker-2: Yeah.
speaker-1: we're not gonna traditionally handle this. We're gonna do a spoiler review in the sense that we're gonna talk about the things that we enjoyed, give it a rating, and call it a day. that's not to say it's gonna be super fast, because there was a lot of things to talk about in this movie. but
speaker-2: If you haven't seen it yet, yeah. Definitely stop here. Yeah. Go fucking watch it. Then go
speaker-1: It's it's actually worth a watch and Dean will tell you why. for sure, 'cause I know he's got a lot of comments on this movie that are gonna be surprising for a lot of people considering his history with Resident Evil is super tainted.
speaker-2: Yeah, especially the Resident Evil films. yeah, so spoilers ahead everybody because we're just gonna talk about everything. Yeah. okay, so first things first, I don't think there's ever been a film that's used more than this. So
speaker-1: Many times.
speaker-2: many fucks to give. He had so many to give.
speaker-1: And he gave every last one of them all the way until the very end of the movie. that was his little personal monologuing the entire time was a fucking treat. like just the fuck like he was the physical embodiment of Morty in the Resident Evil universe this entire movie.
speaker-2: You know, I can yeah, I can see that comparison for sure, because it it it's the thing I love about him is that he just stumbles through with his own incompetence so much.
speaker-1: He makes so many stupid fucking decisions.
speaker-2: Like, the whole time I'm watching this movie, half of the anxiety is because of what's happening. The other half is because of how stupidly he's doing things. And I'm thinking to myself, just y use your brain, use your brain, use your brain, use your brain.
speaker-1: Why you going down the path? Why are you going to follow the bitch that you hit that disappeared? Why? Why? Why?
speaker-2: Like wh why did you stand there and taunt the dog that was stuck in the hole when it's Why
speaker-1: my god.
speaker-2: why did you try to ram the gate instead of looking under the visor like everybody does in a horror movie, or because they've seen a horror movie, they look for a key under the visor. And then you get the truck stuck, you fucking idiot. Guess what? You're walking again.
speaker-1: I and I gotta say I loved I absolutely loved that they did not make that thing a shootable lock, because that is such a video game logic fucking bullshit.
speaker-2: The funny thing about it too is just that even if he went
speaker-0: Point blank, he'd probably still fucking miss.
speaker-1: Well no, he was hitting the fucking th like that
speaker-2: No, I know.
speaker-1: the but the the if he would have hit it, probably would've fucked him up too. But the it just it's so funny because that diamond key specifically is directly a reference to Resident Evil too. It's it's it's a it's literally a key in the game. It's based on the the fourth suits of the the deck of cards. it's just the little nods to the to the game's
speaker-2: There's not even nods. There's direct references, but they're done in such a way where it's not shoving down your throat like fucking welcome to Rakum City. It's
speaker-1: Hee he's
speaker-2: it's d like the fucking bag that he's carrying that has that we find out later is supposed to be the cure. Yeah,
speaker-1: Or at least part of it.
speaker-2: is it's a fucking med bag kit.
speaker-1: Yeah. Plant
speaker-2: And
speaker-1: that you see him walk in like when he's in the the tunnel, you see the green plant inside the van and curve,
speaker-2: It's a green herb.
speaker-1: exactly. the fact that there's no fucking ammo anywhere.
speaker-2: Yep. And the fa no, and the fact that the shotgun was mounted above the fireplace in the living room, but the ammo was at a desk upstairs
speaker-1: Yep.
speaker-2: after he had gone into a room and found a typewriter.
speaker-1: Yep. My only argument would have been that the gun should have had at least two shells in it. If the game was gonna be yeah, 'cause it it it does give you a clip. But
speaker-2: Yeah, but I'm
speaker-1: He was playing on the extreme difficulty. Let's we'll just get
speaker-2: No, I mean realistically if you have like like your trophy gun, like we're gonna you know, this is a kind of a gun culture thing, but if you've got like one of those like really nice like gun trophy type guns and you would mount above a fireplace, you're not gonna leave it loaded. Yeah. it's it's but you're also not really gonna have the ammo nearby. unless you're very paranoid of home intruders. because at that point you just have a loaded gun put somewhere anyway. Yeah. ask me how I know. so It it made sense. Like it was just the little things like that where it's like, okay, this is definitely a survival horror game that this is based on because he is having to scrounge for supplies. He has to scavenge the the sheriff's pistol from him. He has to scavenge the shotgun. He has to scavenge the shells from upstairs. does that with I mean he was trying to scavenge the key from The fucking legs of the the woman.
speaker-1: Thank which was so fucking funny. Dying
speaker-2: yeah, like why I
speaker-1: so hard at that shit.
speaker-2: fucking loved how whatever was pulling it, baiting him
speaker-0: was him so hard.
speaker-2: and he finally used his brain and went nah.
speaker-0: Hehehehehe
speaker-1: No fuck this. And then just left. He
speaker-2: my god.
speaker-1: he was the picture of stupidity and then light dawning on marble head at the right moment almost every time.
speaker-2: Yeah.
speaker-1: I just think it's hilarious irony that it was his desire to remain good natured that ultimately caused his fate.
speaker-2: yeah.
speaker-1: to me, the response should have been shoot the fucking leg off. But that obviously was not gonna happen. But I have questions about that scene that I wonder if you also have since I'm talking about that scene. you noticed that the girl was like still fully like help me, my god, help me despite her foot looking like fucking rolled out spaghetti coming out of the fucking the grinder. and then it attacked him. She was still seemingly unaware, and then all of a sudden her face flits like she just immediately got fully infected out of nowhere. But
speaker-2: Okay.
speaker-1: he, you saw his slow progression, there was signs, like there was veins, there was shit just showing that he was being infected.
speaker-2: Well, yeah that's something about this virus though is it affects d differently, like by person. Like some people turn into one thing, some turn like you had the like she turned into that. The dogs turn into what they turn into. The the Yeah,
speaker-1: The people turn into that fucking
speaker-2: the pin the pinwheel leg person like turned into that. you know it It doesn't affect them all the same. Yeah.
speaker-1: Now that's the other question I have. Is it a virus or is it the parasite? Because the parasite is what that looks like. The way that it was like trying to migrate hosts but also intermingle hosts, that was like Las Plagas from Resident Evil Four.
speaker-2: That's
speaker-1: confusing to me because the plagus was not something that was introduced until later. The P virus, obviously the one that everyone knows, was the one that was curable the way that they were trying to cure it. But it was presenting like the Plagas, which I don't think was curable in the same way. So I don't know
speaker-2: Well again it's not like a direct adaptation as
speaker-1: Yeah, I know. I think it was mixing and mingling and I think it might have made a l for the the hardcore fans that know the difference, I think it's gonna be one of those things that's like a a a point of critique, so to speak.
speaker-2: Yeah, I think in some of the people that I've seen in the critique of this, like when it comes to the hardcore Resident Evil fans, I think that was one of another thing I noticed in a lot of the critiques of this film was it was trying too hard to be funny. I don't get that part at all.
speaker-1: I think it was very natural.
speaker-2: Ex 100%. Like everything that the character does you can tell is clearly something that is believable that he would do.
speaker-1: I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Zach Krager hired this guy and said, I am not gonna tell you anything about what you're doing. I am not gonna tell you anything that's coming. Not one single thing you come into contact with will hurt you, but you will have to react genuinely every time. And I gotta be honest, that looks like what he did. It every every reaction that Brian
speaker-2: Yeah.
speaker-1: But every reaction felt so natural. Like it every time he spoke, every time he said, fuck like it just felt real. This kid is on his way up in a way that I didn't think I could say from a another video game adaptation.
speaker-2: Austin Abrams? Yeah. Yeah,
speaker-0: B.
speaker-2: he was in weapons as well. I heard he was really good in that. That's why he came back with Zack Krager for this film. Yeah.
speaker-1: I like when directors do that. James Gunn's known for it. A couple other people are s like Scorsazi does it.
speaker-2: Or CZ does it, Frank Derabont, fucking Nolan.
speaker-1: David Leach.
speaker-2: Yeah. Nolan does that a lot actually.
speaker-1: A lot too, yeah. doesn't Jowels Whedon or didn't Jazz Whedon used to do that too?
speaker-2: I think so, yeah, before he got wrapped up in the Marvel stuff.
speaker-1: I mean that's kind of a commonplace thinking about it more and more.
speaker-2: Yeah, I mean w if if you're a director and you know the actors that you work with because you've been directing them for years on like it could be years for a single project, you know what they're good at, you know what they're not, you know how well they respond to certain directing techniques. Yeah. So you think, Okay, I'm working on this film, I have an idea of who would be perfect for this role because I can I know I could get them to the point of being in that character. Yeah. I can't believe
speaker-1: We didn't mention Tarantino in that. He's like a notorious
speaker-2: Yeah, yeah, but he doesn't I don't think he's doing anything anymore. I think he's done.
speaker-1: Yeah, no, but what I mean is like every movie he's done, all I'm pretty sure if not all of them, most of them had Sam Elka.
speaker-2: Yeah, yeah. in fact what was I gonna say?
speaker-1: Backbreaker.
speaker-2: Maybe. wow. Fucking Austin Abrams is younger than me.
speaker-1: good god well he he had young face. I will say he gave me vibes. I can't remember who the hell I was thinking that he looked like. but he just he gave me like this vibe, like he looks like someone else. Let's see if I can look at his face in Austin Abrams. he's like a small child. Good god. He's
speaker-2: He's just a little guy.
speaker-1: got a weird fucking face.
speaker-2: Well, did you watch all of The Walking Dead? No. Okay. Because he was in seasons five and six of it apparently.
speaker-1: I never watched a single episode. That's not true. I watched like the first episode.
speaker-2: If you just watch the first season, just leave it at that. That's a whole other can of worms.
speaker-1: he was in Euphoria too.
speaker-2: Yeah, I haven't watched that.
speaker-1: Me neither. he was in Shameless.
speaker-2: Haven't seen that.
speaker-1: and Gangster Squad.
speaker-2: I forgot that film existed.
speaker-1: Extra squad was so good.
speaker-2: I forgot that film existed.
speaker-0: So
speaker-1: but yeah I I mean the way he the way he acted, I was very convinced. I mean I I don't I don't jump scare easy. That's just not something that I I have a really been problem.
speaker-2: Dude, I'm not even gonna lie, when he's fucking fumbling with the shotgun shells and the the guy comes running out from like the bathroom or closet or whatever he was in.
speaker-1: yeah.
speaker-2: that one definitely did get me because I'm I'm focusing on him fumbling with these fucking shotgun shells. Like, dude, come on, the bitch is fucking coming from outside. And he
speaker-1: Like I fu that bitch my god that bitch He was terrible He like his bad luck was on
speaker-2: I
speaker-1: yeah If he was a character in one of our simulators his fortune would be a fucking one Like
speaker-2: No well, mm, I don't know. Because he has a lot of dumb luck. 'Cause he ends up like a lot of the situations that he ends up finding himself in, like getting out of, he does get lucky.
speaker-1: It's literally just locked to it. But it's fucking hilarious.
speaker-2: It's usually after like two or three attempts of failing.
speaker-1: I Yeah. But you know what?
speaker-2: Like.
speaker-1: The reloading the shotgun when he was fully and this is one of those moments that I I I'm just trying to wrap my head around what the fuck he was doing. Every single time and I say this because there was several times, every single time he stops and stares and fucking waits. I'm like, dude. What the actual fuck are you doing? And he's sitting there sitting, literally sitting, watching the floor as she's moving across the first floor. And he's just like dum-de-dum-de-dum. I don't need to defend myself. I'm gonna watch her approach me from the second floor. Like what the fuck was he thinking?
speaker-2: He wasn't.
speaker-1: Clearly, like he's sitting there like, where is she? I'm not gonna load the gun first and then worry, and then he just barely gets it off and blows her fucking head off of her shoulders, which was so badass. But like j and the the murder the gore in this movie. Whoo the gore in this movie.
speaker-2: yeah, there is no fucking health part in this.
speaker-1: Fucking a l I loved it. And then I didn't I didn't know that they were ploggus. So when the fucking tentacles started reaching out of the neck hole and out of the face of the other guy, and I'm like, why is the neck gonna pull that body into it instead of keeping a face out, but the face still somehow stayed out and that that turned into a fucking creature, I tell ya. God damn when that face was pressed up against that that fence.
speaker-2: Yeah.
speaker-1: With all them teeth. definitely a body horror movie in disguise.
speaker-2: dude, yeah. That's yeah. It kinda reminds me of like well not on that kind of scale, but like how the substance ends up getting.
speaker-1: I didn't see that yet, but I've heard
speaker-2: that's so good. like
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-2: even just like the scenarios he gets himself into, like whether it be intentionally or not, like just how things like when he's fucking running down the street to get to the hospital and all the zombies are just like, we're gonna get ya. And they jump off the fucking building and try to splat themselves onto it.
speaker-1: Dude, I was fucking I w I don't know why I was in Gore Heaven for that.
speaker-2: That was fucking insane.
speaker-1: So badass.
speaker-2: The thing I mean it it is kind of unrealistic because let's be honest, if you're falling from that kind of a height, like the only way you're gonna splatter like that is if you're reaching terminal velocity and you're not reaching it at that height. but still, like it was entertaining and just constant fucking splatters of blood and guts everywhere.
speaker-1: What's that? She's just running down the street. Yeah.
speaker-2: Uh-huh. did you notice when he goes down into the sewer that he had a visit from a character from another universe?
speaker-1: Was that the big guy?
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-1: I thought that was me. I thought they just got me in while I was taking a shit one day and
speaker-2: No, that was the the Baron Harkinen from Dune.
speaker-1: my god, I did not I I've never seen Dune, so I don't have a reference.
speaker-2: Stellan Skarsgard's character. Big fat guy from Dune.
speaker-1: you know who he also kinda looks like? The big fucking weird creature from the first blade movie. my god.
speaker-2: haven't seen him. Like the whole time he was on the the screen though, I was thinking of that fucking edit that you see on reels and stuff where it's you know all of their soldiers going around it's like mmm hamburger cheeseburger big meg whopper hamburger cheeseburger big meg whopper I was just thinking that the entire time and then his fucking stomach explodes in the rats.
speaker-1: That was so fucking bizarre, man.
speaker-2: Congrats.
speaker-1: And and he was just like burping and just sitting there burping. And then and then
speaker-2: Literally the Baron.
speaker-1: just bl and then his fucking stomach explodes and he just lies down. Like
speaker-2: It's a good weight loss technique.
speaker-1: yeah. Fucking I guess so. Rapidly love. and then he just dumb lucked fucking AKs or fucking yeah, AK, I think it was an AK 74U. The little rapid fire SMV thing there.
speaker-2: It was an MP five.
speaker-1: Whatever it was. I don't know, guns like that. in any case, he fucking unloaded a clip on them, but I think he used way more bolts than he actually had. But fucking wrecked every one of them rap. And then they all just turned into a goof goo pile that started kissing. I I that theme in this movie fucked with me. Because everything was just like, we're dead. Just kidding.
speaker-0: Okay.
speaker-2: This isn't even my final four.
speaker-1: Right, and then he was so stupidly right to wait for those bodies to reanimate after they jumped off the roof because I mean, same, I was thinking it too, are they gonna turn into a giant fucking Mr. Staypuffed Marshmallow Man? Like what the fuck's gonna happen right now? Nothing, nothing happened with them but the rats. The rats, those fucking disgusting creatures can reform themselves in the guts of another zombie thing and just keep going.
speaker-2: Do you know what the rats reminded me of?
speaker-1: the scarabs from the mummy?
speaker-2: No. No, the the rats from Stranger Things. Was it season four? Season three?
speaker-1: yeah, a little bit yeah.
speaker-2: Where 'cause all the rats in town were going and like turning into the fucking the mind flare rat version. Yeah.
speaker-1: Rat flyers.
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-2: I feel like he saw stranger things and thought, I'm gonna do that.
speaker-0: It's
speaker-1: Uh-huh. the so this movie I I wanted to point out the fact that it had at least two characters in it that were from other video game adaptations. Actors well two actors rather.
speaker-2: Characters? Okay. Yeah. Zach Cherry.
speaker-1: Zach Cherry from Fallout and Paul Walter Hauser, I believe is in Twisted Metal, isn't he?
speaker-0: Mm
speaker-2: Yes.
speaker-1: He's one of Sweet Tooth buddies there.
speaker-2: Yes.
speaker-1: Yes. So we we got some consistent
speaker-2: That's why I didn't recognize him, because he had a shaved face.
speaker-0: Ha ha.
speaker-1: He has fucking weird weirdo mustache, yeah. Was he why am I seeing him on the
speaker-2: Is it not him? looks like him.
speaker-1: Huh. I think I look up plus the metal now.
speaker-2: That's what I'm doing. nope, that is not him. Yep, Stu. It could be brothers.
speaker-1: Mike Mitchell. Wow. Yeah, they really fucking could. They are so similar in in the face. I I dig it so much. In any case
speaker-2: I do recognize him from some.
speaker-1: Yeah, he's he was in the naked gun recently, he was in Cruella, Itanya, Americana, Blackbird, Richard Jewell, Balls Up, Defive Bloods, gives him Cobra Kai.
speaker-2: Yeah, I watched that.
speaker-1: he was stingering Cobra Kai.
speaker-2: is he a wrestler? I think he's a wrestler.
speaker-1: No he's not.
speaker-2: Really? Because I'm seeing a lot of his stuff is wrestling. Wrestling. AEW Collision. Wrestling Revolver Epic Over Texas. Wrestling Revolver at Cage of Horrors 3. Like I'm not talking main like WWE. I'm talking
speaker-1: he was in he was in Fantastic Four. That's what I saw him and that I would know him for honesty. Yeah, I guess as a newer thing.
speaker-2: wanting to see Black Klansman, but I haven't. Apparently he's in there. maybe I recognize him from an episode of Superstore, because he was in an episode of Super.
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-2: Maybe. Yeah, that must be where I recognized him from.
speaker-1: The wrestling thing's relatively new it looks like.
speaker-2: Yeah, by the looks of it. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah. Yeah, I mean so just the one other
speaker-0: Ha ha.
speaker-1: But still I like that you know, I like him. I like that he's making appearances.
speaker-2: Yeah, well he's also a a main character in Severance, Zach Cherry.
speaker-1: Yeah. his name in this movie, Zach not Zach Paul Walterhauser.
speaker-2: It's just Paul.
speaker-1: it was just Paul, but I wanted him to be the chief, the police chief, and I really feel like he was like the police chief, because he was kind of bossing around the police officer.
speaker-2: No, I th no, he was like the that wasn't a police officer, that was a security officer for umbrella. He was a scientist and umbrella.
speaker-1: He was? Or was he wearing a suit?
speaker-2: I I I don't know why he was wearing a suit, but he or he was like a director or something. Because he's the one that he basically said that he was the one that dropped the other vial. that's why Brian was carrying that to Raccoon City.
speaker-1: Yeah, that's right. That's right. I'm getting things all top curvy. Apparently.
speaker-2: And I I watched this like two weeks ago.
speaker-1: Yeah my memory is shit yesterday.
speaker-2: You watched it yesterday.
speaker-1: Yesterday is days ago, man. but yeah, I I mean I will say that th his collecting of the guns was an entertaining little feature. I'm trying to figure out the clip from the MP5 was funny as fuck.
speaker-2: Not only that, but did you notice how much they did or he did like ammo management?
speaker-1: Yeah, he kept looking, which was I was surprised but then he kept saying, Fucking video games and I was like, yeah. I guess that is kind of a thing that we do in the video games to make sure we have
speaker-2: He even mentioned that like the only time he's shot a gun was in a video game anyway.
speaker-1: Yeah, he and he mentions it a couple times. Yeah.
speaker-2: And fuck what was I gonna say? I just there's just so much to talk about it. like the the very few times they do like first person like not exactly first person but like first person
speaker-1: Camera was attached to the end of the gun kind of thing.
speaker-2: Well no, it it seemed like it was mounted like right on his shoulder. You know what mean? Because like it was it was kind of first person, but it was like the the the view was slightly off. like those shots I think they did a really good job. the the fucking when he leaves the the R V in the tunnel, it's basically like a loading screen.
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-2: So I mean there's good like good references to the games and stuff. Also, speaking of the RV, the fact that he
speaker-0: Fucking
speaker-2: faporized the girl.
speaker-1: my god. He
speaker-0: With the shotgun.
speaker-1: did to h he did to her what Rocco did to the cat in Boondog Singh. You haven't seen Boondock Saint do that that's a movie, and that I can't believe you haven't seen that one.
speaker-2: Yeah, again it's on the woop on the watch list.
speaker-1: probably one of Willem Dafoe's best girly rolls.
speaker-2: Early roles. He's been doing movies for years. What do you talk about?
speaker-1: The movie came out in the nineties.
speaker-2: He's been doing movies longer than that.
speaker-1: yeah, I know that, but how much how much longer than that? Movies from the nineties, okay?
speaker-2: I don't know. Okay. his photographer does some work for him though.
speaker-1: That he does.
speaker-2: No, I'm saying have you seen like like any of the photos like in photo shoots of a Willem Defoe? No. D the man cannot pose normally. It's serious.
speaker-1: He's broken. He is broken. What else is there that I liked about this movie? I like that he he got super frustrated with the locks that wouldn't break and then he finally was able to shoot one near the end that Pat locked.
speaker-2: Yeah.
speaker-1: I like that he was stupid enough to throw the fucking ladder because he's a dumbass.
speaker-2: Yep. And he goes, How do I get down? the ladder. Fuck!
speaker-0: Just
speaker-1: Another prime example of great use of the word fuck. this movie handled swearing perfectly. it was the it was the perfect swearing to gore ratio.
speaker-2: Honestly.
speaker-1: his own like I said earlier, his monologue was probably what was the best part about him for me. And every stupid mistake just made you giggle no matter what the situation was. Like even him accidentally killing the lady super fast early on, not early on, but when he shot her in the head and it was fucking funny. Because he was like, my god, my god, my god. And then he fucking killed. And it just fuck j his reactions were great.
speaker-2: Dude, this fucking there's so much of this movie that's like literally pure comedy. Like when he's ch being chased by the lady around the cop car, just they just keep going around and around and around.
speaker-1: Yeah.
speaker-2: And then all of a sudden she's no longer behind him. And then he just blindly fires and while trying to recoil in the snow. And then he gets to his car and he's like, Why won't my car start? It's like, yeah, my terrible aim.
speaker-1: No no no. I remember what he said too, he's like, wait, who shot my car? And he turns around and he like, He's so fucking dumb and then even even at the end, when he's like fully evolved into his next stage of evolution, he's still like, come on just stick me with it as he's fucking eating a scientist. Yeah.
speaker-2: Please.
speaker-0: Just k the needle.
speaker-1: Just he got a big fucking eye the size of his head. On the side of his head. And he said just just come on, let me have it.
speaker-2: Man, the whole like genuinely though, like this movie gave me like anxiety throughout all of it, but in a good way. Because there was always these like little payoffs towards his fuck ups. It was like it was it was like a fucking roller coaster ride. Yeah. It was so good.
speaker-1: and let's not forget the the fucking perfect music where someone was hitting that same fucking one high pitched note just to open up the door to find the little girl. Mm-hmm and the music calms down and then he looks at her fucking foot and freaks the fuck out for a second before he decides, Alright, yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna help you.
speaker-2: So the way that he acts in the movie, where he's like you can tell he's like way out of his element and almost like a kind of a stoner guy, even though he's not r actually s high. Yeah.
speaker-1: It's okay.
speaker-2: Yeah. We had watched well, I showed her Cabin in the Wood, like a week or two before we went out and watched this film.
speaker-1: Yeah.
speaker-2: And she goes, like she leans over to me in the theater halfway through. She goes, He's just like the guy from fucking Cabin in the woods. Like the stoner guy. Like he's figuring stuff out, but he's like stupidly wrong sometimes and like kind of fumbles his way into stuff. And it makes sense. He's kind of that character.
speaker-1: Yeah, it's that dumb luck all over again.
speaker-2: Yeah. But in like the same kind of vibe and the same kind of fuck. Okay. especially in like that scene.
speaker-0: Ha ha.
speaker-1: And he's just so like roll with the punches at the same time. It is kind of so
speaker-2: Genuinely, yeah.
speaker-1: wild to watch.
speaker-2: And like he's like running down the street trying to reload the shotgun that he's dropping all the fucking shotgun shells.
speaker-1: Yeah. I it's just it's such good storytelling when you take a universe like Resident Evil's and you just throw random Jack into the middle of it and see what he would do.
speaker-2: It's so good because it doesn't stick to the story. It doesn't try to adhere to a certain game's plot. It doesn't try to adhere to
speaker-1: Character elements.
speaker-2: Exactly. It's all its own things, and you're not following the badass protagonist like Leon or
speaker-1: Chris Redfield or Jill or
speaker-2: following them, you're following this fuck up NPC as fuck character who at the end of the movie turns into a boss who one of the main characters would be fighting in their story.
speaker-1: And meanwhile he fought that exact same character the entire time basic.
speaker-2: Yeah.
speaker-1: It was like Nemesis kinda.
speaker-2: I was gonna say it's like like Walter White, you know, take in the traits of those you kill.
speaker-1: Sure. Yeah, I guess kinda. I guess kinda.
speaker-2: Do we have anything else?
speaker-1: we've we've talked about all the best parts of the movie. I can't really think about anything that bothers me really at all that w would be worth talking about.
speaker-2: No, I mean there's really nothing in this that bothered me much. there was I mean, I don't know if it was just because of it the way it was mixed for the theater, but I do feel like some of the audio cues for like the music was a little too high. like it just the music was really loud, like when it was doing certain things. I mean that was one thing that did bother me. There was I mean s some of the CG wasn't the best, but I definitely love like the the set designs that they used. the the way they did lighting and you know accent lighting with like you know there's the He's driving through the the snowy road and like his headlights are illuminating, but his brake lights are illuminating the red and you know shit like that. The the way they use the camera in between, like sometimes it's first person, sometimes it's not, and it's just most of the time it the all the shots are interesting enough. It's very well thought through. It's very well executed. Like the fucking Maternity ward scene? fucking fantastic. especially like in the comedic timing with a lot, like even the in the maternity ward scene, like the most fucked up area in the movie, you see two little baby hands come out of the crib and then they just start getting longer and longer and longer and longer as they stretch out.
speaker-1: Yeah, that was creepy as fuck.
speaker-2: It was fucking hilarious though. And it's just it's it's so well done. Like Zack Krager, he knew what he wanted to make. He knew how he wanted to make it, and I think it works really fucking well. Like it's definitely the best Resident Evil movie ever made. hand down. It's probably the best bigger budget. horror movie of this year, maybe even of last year, 'cause obsession was this year.
speaker-1: Backrooms was this year too though. Backrooms was really good as well though.
speaker-2: no. I think that Resident Evil is leagues above that. And you know, on like on the lower budget scale, obsession for sure. and even then like movie quality wise, obsession is better than than backrooms. The more I think about backrooms, the more I'm just kinda soured to it 'cause it's like what it could have been when then what it wasn't.
speaker-1: Well, I mean it's in fairness in fairness, I know that it's only in three weeks right now, but overall Bagram did make four hundred million. So it did make a good amount of money.
speaker-2: Yeah, it had a better like cult following behind it and and the fact that who was directing it really did
speaker-1: The actor, along with the lead actor.
speaker-2: Yeah, 'cause you had, you Schwedelegiafor. but I think that it just you know, it's it didn't hold up. Like it does not hold up in comparison. yeah, I think Resident Evil may be I wanna say it's probably the best video game movie adaptation simply because it doesn't try to retread what's been done in a game.
speaker-1: Okay. I don't really hate that argument.
speaker-2: Like, what's another video game mo movie adaptation, movie specifically, that has been done this well? Me You can't say free guy.
speaker-1: No, that's not a video game F N F. Well it's I mean Son
speaker-2: Let's see why.
speaker-1: Hill. Sonic and Mario were good but they're not the same. Sonic was really good, but again it's not the same.
speaker-2: I mean it is its own thing. That's yeah. That does it does have that going for it. It's not just a retread of the game, 'cause how the fuck do you retread those games? Like what are you gonna make? Sonic O six? Yeah, people wanna see that. Yeah. yeah.
speaker-1: Though those those movies have earned their title. I will say that in terms of adaptations that have come leagues beyond the expectation, Resident Evil will definitely stand out in the crowd.
speaker-2: Yeah, a hundred percent it.
speaker-1: I can't I don't know if I can be a hundred percent on board that it's the best adaptation film wise, but it's definitely up there.
speaker-2: From what I can think of, yeah, like well let's see. Let's see if I can find a list. List of
speaker-1: You've got Sonic, Mario, Pokemon, Werewolves within, Until Dawn, Silent Hill, obviously Resident Evil, Minecraft.
speaker-2: Okay, let's nope. I wanted to sort by
speaker-1: Warcraft, Assassin's Creed, Rampage, Mortal Kombat.
speaker-2: Alright, so yeah, looking at the Wikipedia page for list of films based on video games, and then sorting by highest rating on Metacritic, except for the three that apparently don't have anything. Resident Evil is currently the highest according to the Metacritic. Werewolves Within being directly below that, and then the 95 Mortal Kombat. Then Sonic 3. Iron Lung a little bit further down. Prince of Persia, which I forgot fucking existed.
speaker-1: So did I.
speaker-2: The Tomb Raider movie, which no. Monster Hunter, Sonic 2, Mortal Kombat 2. Rampage, th that's not a fucking that's v so loosely based on a fucking video game. Just like the Battleship movie. that's a board game. Minecraft movie, like it's not it's not even close.
speaker-1: Yeah, I mean again I think the only ones that I could speak any kind of positivity to that would be comparable in terms of how well the adaptation came out overall would be probably 'cause the Sonic movies have been great.
speaker-2: Yeah, i if I s if I sort by highest rotten tomatoes, Resident Evil is ninety six percent, Sonic Three is eighty six. That's a
speaker-1: Yeah.
speaker-2: ten percent fucking difference.
speaker-1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean again you've also got different people, different crowds going like Sonic fans probably not.
speaker-2: They're also a younger audience. It it appeals to an a a younger audience. So it's gonna have you know, that's why it had a higher box office.
speaker-1: Yeah, so I mean it makes sense, but it's also also still new-ish.
speaker-2: Werewolves within did not do well. I'm just just looking at that. The budget was 6.5 million. The worldwide box office was less than 1 million. They lost 5.5 million on that film. But it was received well, which is weird.
speaker-1: Just didn't make any money cause I don't remember seeing much marketing for it either though.
speaker-2: But yeah, I am not surprised.
speaker-1: Yeah. anything else?
speaker-2: was based on the game werewolves within it. no. Like if if for some reason you've listened to this so far, even with the spoilers, still and you didn't watch it, still serious go fucking watch it.
speaker-1: This like this is the kind of movie that deserves to be seen in theater.
speaker-2: Yeah, I don't know when it's coming out of theaters though.
speaker-1: Probably not much longer. These movies usually don't stick around but
speaker-2: Yeah, it's usually like a six week thing. Yeah. but you know, if you can catch it in theater, definitely do so. I will be buying this on 4K Blu-ray when it comes out, because I think this movie is fantastic. I know that Zack Kregor is not going to be working on another horror film next. I believe his next film will be a sci-fi film. so that, you know, i I I would prefer if he did another horror one, but you know, even like Gary Astor and I think Robert Eggers both, you know, they really got their name started with their horror stuff. but they're moving on to different style of projects. So I you know, it spread your wings, King. Like seriously, Zach, you did a fucking fantastic job of this movie.
speaker-1: Yeah, this is th this is not ironic. This is actually legit. For real. This this one was earned I can't I can't I don't have anything that I could say negative like I know you have your negatives about it. I don't have the same negatives you do. I I can't
speaker-2: Mine are so fucking nitpicky anyway.
speaker-1: Yeah. I just don't I don't think I have anything that I can even say is worth mentioning that I have as a downside for it. Other than maybe that there's not any kind of direct ties to the games that give me any kind of hope for a sequel, so just
speaker-2: And and genuinely, like, because of the fact that it doesn't have those, I think that's why I enjoy it as much as I do, is because I'm not as familiar with the games. I've never sat down and fully played a Resident Evil game. Yeah. I did try this past weekend to try s to start playing Resident Evil 4. What killed me was the fucking control scheme. It's awful. I was playing the original PS2 version, but I think with the the remake they fixed how the like the button cont like the controls are. It's just it's it's not easy to do in the original RE four. So I might I might just try and do like the Resident Evil two remake, 'cause I've got that on Steam. I might try and start there. Yeah. Got I've
speaker-1: That one's really good.
speaker-2: got both two and three the the remakes on Steam. I think they were both from those humble bundles you gave me or something. But yeah, no, the Jenny and and see, here's the other thing too. I'm just gonna keep thinking of shit. We're gonna have to end this at some point. the movie is tight. There's not a lot of wasted time, if any, at all.
speaker-1: Yeah, no they definitely kept it to a good solid one hour and a half.
speaker-2: Yeah, it's an hour and a half long and it doesn't even feel like an hour and a half.
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-2: Like there's there's no wasted time, there's no wasted sh like there's you have like establishing shots and stuff,
speaker-1: Yeah.
speaker-2: but they're done in a way where there's so much to look at and it gives you like the tone of how things are about to go. Like they're there for a fucking reason. And honestly. Would love to see this again like as soon as possible. I just don't have time to go see it in theaters again. If I could though, I would. Like unironically, I would go watch this again in theaters.
speaker-1: I mean, I don't know that I would go and see the theaters again, but I would definitely I I this is one of those ones that I would suggest against the whole yo ho and a bottle of rum. Yeah.
speaker-2: Definitely buy the Blu-ray for this. Yeah. Like, okay, so even if you don't own a Blu-ray player, if you buy the Blu-ray, usually they come with a digital code for the movie in the box. But like buying that shows that this is the kind of film we would like to see. As much as I hate giving Sony money, but like if you vote with your wallet, so yeah, I will definitely be buying this on 4K Blu-ray. And I will watch the 4K Blu-ray again.
speaker-1: Yeah, you might get some honestly there's gonna be deleted scenes no doubt and those will be probably pretty cool too.
speaker-2: Yeah, I'd like to see some special fe I think actually, if I'm not mistaken. What the fuck am I doing? 'Cause I know they've announced the pre-order for the 4K that's available on Amazon. Don't yeah, I don't think it's showing anything specifically about it yet. I think I was looking at the obsession one, that's what I was thinking of. but usually like whenever they get like the full box office art and everything and the actual product images on on here, it'll probably tell me like what they plan on having for special features and stuff on the on the movie. So but yeah, I'll definitely be buying it. It's currently $38 on Amazon for the 4K. the price will probably go down. The the regular Blu-ray is 30, the DVD is twenty-five.
speaker-1: Not that
speaker-2: Yeah, so but I'll be buying the four K Blu-ray.
speaker-1: Okay. Well, we got one thing left to do and that's give it a number. I know what you gave it on letterbox. I imagine it's gonna reflect what you give it here, so let's let's hear it.
speaker-2: yeah, I give it a it's a very high four star rating. with a like as well, because obviously. And you know that might go up with another rewatch. It might go to a four and a half or yeah, four and a half.
speaker-1: Okay. So what is that gonna be for us?
speaker-2: We'll leave it at what I'm what I got at now, four star, so an eighty out of a hundred.
speaker-1: Okay. I can live with that. I am gonna go with an eighty five out of mine.
speaker-2: Okay. So eighty two and a half. You just want to round up to eighty three.
speaker-1: Or eighty th Yeah. So eighty three out of a hundred, solid movie, solid, solid movie.
speaker-2: yeah, it's c honestly great.
speaker-1: Couldn't recommend it more. that's it. I don't exactly know what movie we're gonna do next week. we have to figure that out. But
speaker-2: I would prefer it not be shit.
speaker-1: Yeah, well yeah. Yeah. but until then any parting words for the audience.
speaker-2: Go this fucking movie.
speaker-1: Can I really fully agree. Highly recommend it. Go see it twice even. maybe you'll miss things the first time.
speaker-2: I mean I saw that they had the AMC Theaters had the the lunchbox as a popcorn bucket you can buy. Yep. so we have bought that and it is expected to ship in December. So apparently people are trying to scalp that on eBay for like $250. Shocking. I bought it directly from AMC for twenty-five. So
speaker-1: Sweet. Alright, well, Arbiter, it is your turn to say your final word.
