What does a forensic psychologist actually do — and how different is the job in the UK compared with the United States?
In the first interview episode of The Indictable Podcast, Dr Catrin Williams is joined by Dr Harrington, a forensic psychologist based in Atlanta, Georgia, to compare forensic psychology practice on both sides of the Atlantic.
Dr Harrington explains how forensic psychological work in the US is often centred around court-ordered evaluations, with psychologists instructed to answer specific legal questions relating to issues such as competency to stand trial and not guilty by reason of insanity. They also explore how legislation varies significantly between individual states, including Georgia's particularly restrictive approach to insanity defences.
Catrin contrasts this with forensic psychology practice in the UK, where psychologists working within secure hospitals and prisons are often much more involved in psychological treatment, rehabilitation, risk assessment and longer-term pathways of care.
