[Music]
2
00:00:10,500 --> 00:00:15,800
This is GamesItWork.biz, your weekly podcast about gaming, technology and play.
3
00:00:15,800 --> 00:00:19,199
Your hosts are Michael Martine, Andy Piper, and Michael Rowe.
4
00:00:19,199 --> 00:00:22,800
The thoughts and opinions on this podcast are those of the hosts and guests alone,
5
00:00:22,800 --> 00:00:28,500
and are not the opinions of any organization which they have been, are or may be, affiliated with.
6
00:00:32,799 --> 00:00:37,899
This is Episode 555. 1-2-1-2.
7
00:00:38,500 --> 00:00:41,079
[upbeat music]
8
00:00:46,000 --> 00:01:05,840
Hello everybody and welcome again to Games@Work.biz which is hopefully your weekly technology podcast. The one that you listen to every week. My name is Andy Piper. I am joined as often by my two co-hosts Michael Row and Michael Martine, Michael Row. How are you?
9
00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:15,920
I am well Andy, glad you're back, hope you had a great time last week, and I am also joined by a guy named Michael, Michael Martine, how are you?
10
00:01:17,000 --> 00:01:21,799
That's so funny. I'm joined by Michael Martin as well. It's amazing.
11
00:01:23,239 --> 00:01:45,239
I'm so excited Andy that we we're back together all together. You, me, Michael for this week and I am super deluxe excited about all the hard work that you've done about improving our site and getting things organized ready and rocket and roll in here without even speedier downloads and speedier uploads and you're making a face. Why are you making a face?
12
00:01:45,000 --> 00:01:54,719
Well, I mean, it was, yeah, our listeners hopefully haven't noticed very much, but it's been been an interesting week of migration.
13
00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:50,920
Yeah.
14
00:01:50,500 --> 00:01:52,500
Hopefully.
15
00:01:54,719 --> 00:02:01,039
We've been meaning to move away from a previous host for quite some time, and we finally got to the point of, okay, we're doing it.
16
00:02:01,039 --> 00:02:03,960
So I haven't written a blog post about it yet.
17
00:02:03,960 --> 00:02:16,960
I noticed that Michael Rowe has done briefly, but yeah, it's a little bit of a different set up it means that we have a lot more control but
18
00:02:06,500 --> 00:02:08,020
- Well, just very briefly.
19
00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:44,000
sometimes it's a little bit too much control so there's a few extra things that we need to twiddle and do ourselves but that's okay we it's a good opportunity to get my hand steady and yeah as you say it's quite nice to see things at the moment zipping along so we're still on our WordPress and with things that will look almost identical which is very much intentional we've got some thoughts about maybe changing things up in the future and we can do that now.
20
00:02:17,000 --> 00:02:19,000
[laughs]
21
00:02:17,000 --> 00:02:19,240
[laughing]
22
00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:52,000
So not not not immediately let's let's let things settle in first exactly yeah yeah.
23
00:02:47,500 --> 00:02:49,500
Yeah
24
00:02:49,000 --> 00:02:55,960
Let's stabilize and settle. Yeah. Well, so that was, that was the software part of the story,
25
00:02:51,919 --> 00:02:53,919
Stay on target
26
00:02:55,960 --> 00:03:07,400
but you have a hardware part of the story too. In fact, you're using a specialized piece of hardware kit even right now, aren't you? Not related to the site, not really to the site.
27
00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:07,360
Right, but that's yes, I have a hardware story exactly I
28
00:03:06,000 --> 00:03:08,979
Not not related, but yes.
29
00:03:08,280 --> 00:03:12,879
Mean we could we could make it related to the side by forcing me to use this piece of hardware every time I do any
30
00:03:13,120 --> 00:03:15,120
Administration on the site, but that would just be
31
00:03:13,500 --> 00:03:15,740
[laughs]
32
00:03:16,080 --> 00:03:24,460
Irritating there's a company called called Pulupi out of Canada and they have for a while being making these
33
00:03:17,000 --> 00:03:19,240
[laughing]
34
00:03:21,199 --> 00:03:22,500
- Which is an awesome name.
35
00:03:25,719 --> 00:03:32,900
open source Input devices I think they started out with a track ball that you could assemble yourself and it's all 3d printable and so
36
00:03:33,000 --> 00:03:37,740
The software is all open source. It's using QMK, which is a an open source
37
00:03:38,280 --> 00:03:42,840
Well originally it was a customizable keyboard firmware and now it's expanded to other input devices and
38
00:03:43,840 --> 00:03:47,919
They've made a range of different types of track ball including a miniature nano one
39
00:03:48,240 --> 00:03:56,840
they've Done a few other things I've got to track pad as well But they came out with this thing which had a familiar looking little pointing device
40
00:03:57,599 --> 00:04:02,000
To some of our listeners who I know come from a similar background to the three of us
41
00:04:03,000 --> 00:04:16,279
That was very familiar on the old on the old and and on current. I believe trackpad devices trackpad trackpad What it is a trackpad? I'm not talking trackpoint. Thank you on the on the think think pad is what I was trying to say. Thank you very much
42
00:04:11,000 --> 00:04:13,000
Track point. Yeah.
43
00:04:12,000 --> 00:04:19,000
track point. No, that's a... think pod.
44
00:04:19,000 --> 00:04:22,839
Think yeah, so yeah, it's a little
45
00:04:24,000 --> 00:04:28,939
pointing Joystick that you get for your fingertip in the on the
46
00:04:29,560 --> 00:04:32,779
that IBM and Toshiba had on their laptops back in the day.
47
00:04:33,000 --> 00:04:41,000
And instead of sitting in the middle of a keyboard, this one sits like off to the side, much like a mouse, so you don't need to move your hand around, you can just move your finger tip.
48
00:04:41,000 --> 00:04:46,000
It's super sensitive, so you can do very, very fine adjustments with it.
49
00:04:46,000 --> 00:04:48,000
And you can reconfigure it.
50
00:04:48,000 --> 00:04:54,000
And I just thought I needed to get one of those for all time sake, and using it right now, it's quite nice.
51
00:04:53,500 --> 00:04:58,500
If they would just make a full-on laptop keyboard with that,
52
00:04:57,000 --> 00:05:00,000
Keyboard with the... yeah.
53
00:05:00,399 --> 00:05:04,600
that you could plug on top of any laptop and just rip out the old keyboard or for desktop.
54
00:05:04,600 --> 00:05:09,600
I know Lenovo, I think, stopped selling
55
00:05:09,899 --> 00:05:14,899
the wired 101 key keyboard with track point.
56
00:05:10,500 --> 00:05:29,220
X standard keyboards. Yeah, yeah, which had it. Yes, I know. And there's been various attempts to recreate that it for the party open source-ish slash open laptops like the framework and the M&T reform. I don't think anybody's been particularly successful at doing it, but
57
00:05:30,740 --> 00:05:35,939
and yes, you're right that this doesn't sit in the keyboard. It sits off to one side, but
58
00:05:36,500 --> 00:05:40,379
It has a lot of the same affordances in terms of the precision.
59
00:05:40,500 --> 00:05:52,500
The default left and right mouse buttons are behind the track point, so you use your thumb still to hit them as you would on it, and I'll think pad.
60
00:05:52,500 --> 00:06:03,500
Yes, it's fun. I don't use it all the time. It is a wired device. It actually runs on the RP-24 to the Raspberry Pi Pico chip as many of their devices do.
61
00:06:03,500 --> 00:06:10,500
So it's not wireless. It does need to be plugged in, but it works out of the box with all of the operating system.
62
00:06:10,500 --> 00:06:16,500
It's very straightforwardly.
63
00:06:12,000 --> 00:06:18,399
So if you need a track point to type device for your Mac, you could now have this and it can make you happy
64
00:06:16,500 --> 00:06:31,500
Yeah, and listeners will remember that my relationship with Logitech has been troublesome, especially with all of the nonsense they want to force onto your laptop when you install there.
65
00:06:27,000 --> 00:06:31,740
You mean, you mean adding an AI to a mouse driver?
66
00:06:31,500 --> 00:06:39,500
Right, exactly. All of that sort of thing. The huge chunk of code that they install when you want to use one of their devices.
67
00:06:41,500 --> 00:06:56,339
Well, long time listeners of the show will know that we normally wait until close to the end to do some media related stuff, but we're all three big fans of the guild and Andy, I think you were the first, yeah, good, well, what is that?
68
00:06:52,500 --> 00:06:55,540
What's the Guild?
69
00:06:55,540 --> 00:06:59,579
What is the Guild?
70
00:06:56,339 --> 00:07:02,480
Yeah, TV show, we all know this codex, Vork, Tink, all these great people.
71
00:06:59,579 --> 00:07:22,420
Well it was a, it was a, it was a YouTube series rather than a video series, online series rather than a TV show but yeah I flesh a day put together this show as it turns out 20 years ago which is a somewhat terrifying thought but that is what they're, why they're nice thing right now it was a Dungeons D&D or online D&D
72
00:07:01,500 --> 00:07:04,860
It was a yout, yes, not a TV show.
73
00:07:12,500 --> 00:07:14,500
That's insane.
74
00:07:22,500 --> 00:07:52,019
game a group of misfits that had adventures together on the internet and in real life and they're doing a reunion movie they're describing it as there's a Kickstarter that's in under about to be underway you can go sign up and get on the mailing list to get notified when that happens and and help them to growl fund it. I really enjoyed the Guild so I would be surprised if I didn't and enjoy whatever they come out with this time.
75
00:07:52,000 --> 00:08:02,319
Yeah, and the thing that I loved about it, not only about the Guild, but also some of the videos that the team did afterwards, like, do you want to date my avatar and game on and the others?
76
00:08:02,319 --> 00:08:11,839
And then my product group used and got Felicia Day to come as host of one of our big conferences.
77
00:08:11,839 --> 00:08:21,639
And I know I met her and got to talk to her. And I think, Michael, that was the year that you came to the conference. And I think there's a picture of you with her. I've got a picture with her everything and and.
78
00:08:19,500 --> 00:08:22,060
Mm-hmm, yep.
79
00:08:22,000 --> 00:08:52,000
Felicia was just awesome and then years later I read her biography that she wrote and she talked about what was going on while she did that conference and the other ones that year and it was so stressful and so negative which I can understand so I thought it was just she's such a professional I really enjoy her as a performer and as an internet celebrity so can't wait to see what comes out of this Kickstarter I'm so excited
80
00:08:32,000 --> 00:08:36,039
Oh wow, oh my goodness.
81
00:08:51,500 --> 00:08:59,419
Yeah, I just wanted to make sure that was on the radar for folks who may have not have seen it and there may have been all sorts of like us fans of that show.
82
00:09:00,000 --> 00:09:01,720
Yeah, so check out the links below.
83
00:09:01,720 --> 00:09:07,679
We'll have all kinds of things to videos and movies and other connections, so you can check it out.
84
00:09:07,679 --> 00:09:08,879
And if you don't know about the guilt,
85
00:09:08,879 --> 00:09:11,240
this is your opportunity to learn more.
86
00:09:11,240 --> 00:09:14,000
Now, going from one celebrity to another,
87
00:09:13,500 --> 00:09:18,820
Well, I'm into the mandatory AI segment of the show.
88
00:09:14,000 --> 00:09:14,759
we have--
89
00:09:17,000 --> 00:09:21,000
yeah That will never die for some reason
90
00:09:21,799 --> 00:09:26,600
yeah, we're not going to boo ourselves, but others have.
91
00:09:26,600 --> 00:09:30,039
And we have an example of waz from
92
00:09:30,000 --> 00:09:46,000
Apple Themes, Steve Wazniak, who gave a graduation speech that actually had some applause for his version of AI, which was a little bit different than some of the others that came from our Google leadership and so on and so forth.
93
00:09:46,000 --> 00:09:51,000
Andy, you watch this as well, didn't you? Yeah, a chance to see this?
94
00:09:50,000 --> 00:10:04,639
Yeah, I mean, I think it's interesting because there is a series of videos recently in the last couple of months, probably more recent than that, even in the last four weeks of people doing
95
00:10:05,600 --> 00:10:19,919
commencement or graduation or other speeches, referring to AI where they are generally loudly booed by students. And in this case, C wasn't yet refers to AI.
96
00:10:20,000 --> 00:10:33,919
But he uses it as actual intelligence rather and is quite interesting. I was talking about it over the last couple of days with a few people and I was at a school, my high school
97
00:10:23,500 --> 00:10:24,940
- Yes, I love that.
98
00:10:34,879 --> 00:10:43,120
had an event yesterday for people that donate. And the headmaster gave an
99
00:10:43,759 --> 00:10:49,840
outstanding speech to the group of us that were having lunch, updating us on the progress of the
100
00:10:50,320 --> 00:11:14,240
pupils and talked with passion about his interest in this space and how to ensure that youngsters have a well-rounded education, critical thinking, all of the things that you need to be building into education, even as education becomes more and more digital and digitally focused.
101
00:11:14,240 --> 00:11:19,759
So he also had a phrase that I'm not going to
102
00:11:20,720 --> 00:11:39,840
include here because it may be something for the future, but got me very excited in relation to what the school is intending to do to help at next year's and in particular youngsters to get to grips with this stuff. So I was, yeah, I just saw a lot of alignment between these two
103
00:11:40,639 --> 00:11:47,679
two angles around how can we take that buzzword or that buzz phrase and turn it on its head,
104
00:11:47,679 --> 00:11:51,919
focus on the important part of it which
105
00:11:50,000 --> 00:12:08,120
is humans, people, actual people with actual brains rather than attempts to re-create human humanity in a different form which is seemingly very challenging and I believe will remain
106
00:12:11,500 --> 00:12:16,620
of it, love it. And just the season two for all of these graduation speeches be happening,
107
00:12:16,620 --> 00:12:32,139
there's graduations one after the other right now, so it's been intriguing to hear what so many people have had to say about this and other related advice for young people beginning their careers and moving into the working world after finishing up their university degree programs.
108
00:12:33,820 --> 00:12:38,620
Stay staying with the AI theme here for a bit and not the actual intelligence version,
109
00:12:38,620 --> 00:13:17,500
but the artificial intelligence won. There was an article I saw in Variety where Spotify is, and this is not the disco ball, where Spotify is now putting in the approved verify by Spotify for those podcasts that are not generated by AI. So if there are real people talking like this one right here, we would in theory be eligible for said verification badge. Well, maybe they call
110
00:13:05,000 --> 00:13:08,000
So, I guess the question becomes, how are they verifying it?
111
00:13:08,500 --> 00:13:09,899
- Yes.
112
00:13:09,899 --> 00:13:11,059
- Exactly, Anna.
113
00:13:11,500 --> 00:13:23,899
up a special Google number and the Google voice answers that says yes, this is a real podcast.
114
00:13:18,500 --> 00:13:41,820
Yeah, because I really, I know you're being snarky, but I really wonder how they do this especially as so many content farms, including Amazon Alexa, are generating content as podcasts.
115
00:13:41,820 --> 00:13:48,419
All did it for a long time, long time, two years now, with Gemini, right, with...
116
00:13:45,500 --> 00:13:48,340
Internet times forever. Yeah.
117
00:13:49,340 --> 00:13:55,259
creating... take this stuff and spit me out a podcast so I can hear about stuff.
118
00:13:55,259 --> 00:14:04,179
And is it... what are the rules? Is it... no content is generated? Is it... the speakers aren't generated?
119
00:14:04,179 --> 00:14:10,580
I mean, there's so many things that can be considered AI-generated in the context of a podcast.
120
00:14:08,000 --> 00:14:16,879
I think this is interesting as well, so I'm glad that they are looking to ban or reduce the
121
00:14:17,840 --> 00:14:22,960
visibility of AI, exclusive AI generated content, and we'll come onto that in the next piece,
122
00:14:22,960 --> 00:14:31,440
but I am concerned that this gives Spotify even more power over shows, right? I mean,
123
00:14:29,500 --> 00:14:31,820
Mm-hmm. Yep.
124
00:14:31,440 --> 00:14:38,000
as somebody once said, get it wherever you get your podcast.
125
00:14:38,320 --> 00:14:44,960
is a revolutionary idea, right? The idea of podcast being built on top of an open
126
00:14:45,759 --> 00:15:08,120
protocol technology like RSS and anybody being able to get them from anywhere and not being kept by Apple or Spotify or anyone else is interesting. And the idea of Spotify slapping a verification badge, having worked at Twitter, I know how challenging that verification process is and people
127
00:15:03,000 --> 00:15:05,000
[laughs]
128
00:15:08,000 --> 00:15:19,000
rightly wary of it because of the intrusiveness of some of the processes that happen with it now when it comes to identity verification.
129
00:15:19,000 --> 00:15:29,000
And as Michael just said, I mean what are the criteria? Are we prominent enough? Are we eligible?
130
00:15:29,000 --> 00:15:34,000
It says we must meet or the podcast must meet, Spotify standards for authenticity and trust.
131
00:15:34,000 --> 00:15:38,039
So, I think one for our listeners, keep it on how long
132
00:15:38,000 --> 00:15:43,639
it takes before, if you use Spotify before our show shows up with one of these badges,
133
00:15:43,639 --> 00:16:08,059
because I've no idea how long it will take before we get approached or before somebody goes to the effort of marking us as verified and I have no doubt that they suddenly have a massive rush of individuals all trying to get their shows authenticated and then possibly reselling their authenticated feed.
134
00:16:08,000 --> 00:16:13,039
To people with less, great motives, let's see what happens.
135
00:16:15,000 --> 00:16:22,399
Yep, and there's there's a whole set of steps. I'm just been looking here while we're talking about what needs to needs to occur. So you're
136
00:16:19,000 --> 00:16:31,279
Oh yeah, let me tell me what I can spend my back holiday weekend jumping through hoops for the for the people in Sweden I can just do a little dance through through hoops if they want
137
00:16:31,500 --> 00:16:40,860
We've only been... yeah.
138
00:16:31,720 --> 00:16:38,320
Yeah, well, we probably don't have enough of an artist profile already on on Spotify to begin with so they're you know
139
00:16:36,360 --> 00:16:42,360
Sheesh see this is and this is and this is a problem right because it means that it will reinforce
140
00:16:40,519 --> 00:16:44,840
Yeah, identity management that is gate kept, right?
141
00:16:45,000 --> 00:16:49,000
Well, it will reinforce the existing meat.
142
00:16:49,000 --> 00:16:56,000
And this is not me being salty about our show.
143
00:16:56,000 --> 00:17:03,000
It's me thinking about this in the democratization of content and of access for everyone.
144
00:17:03,000 --> 00:17:18,000
How visible are how invisible will it make people that don't either pony up cash or have some other kind of existing profile to enable people's content to be discovered and shared and enjoyed by many?
145
00:17:19,500 --> 00:17:21,500
Yep. So Michael.
146
00:17:20,000 --> 00:17:32,000
I think people know that we, the three of us, have been pretty chill about our relative lack of celebrity as podcasters over a very long time.
147
00:17:32,000 --> 00:17:38,000
We joke about it, and we do it because we enjoy doing it, but we also enjoy it when new people discover us.
148
00:17:37,500 --> 00:17:49,220
And yeah, and let's face it, I mean, we've been podcasting together for 20 years off and on.
149
00:17:38,000 --> 00:17:44,000
We don't spend our own personal money on anything other than hosting the show.
150
00:17:49,000 --> 00:17:54,000
We should do a reunion unit. You move it, you know, like the girls.
151
00:17:51,779 --> 00:17:54,180
Yeah, we could call up Felicia Day.
152
00:17:54,000 --> 00:17:55,000
Yeah.
153
00:17:56,500 --> 00:18:02,980
or any other celebrity guests, who joined us once upon a time or twice.
154
00:18:03,000 --> 00:18:10,839
Yeah, Veronica Belmont, we could have her on because we actually had her on the show.
155
00:18:04,059 --> 00:18:06,339
Yeah, no, that would be super fun, wouldn't it?
156
00:18:07,660 --> 00:18:11,940
Yeah, exactly. And we'll promise to hit the big red button the first time.
157
00:18:15,500 --> 00:18:19,339
Whoo, just giving me flashbacks there, Michael.
158
00:18:15,980 --> 00:18:18,859
The, I was looking at notebook LM.
159
00:18:19,500 --> 00:18:22,839
[laughter]
160
00:18:19,660 --> 00:18:24,819
Yeah, no, notebook LM does this too, right? So it allows you to, yeah,
161
00:18:22,839 --> 00:18:24,539
That's what I was talking about.
162
00:18:24,539 --> 00:18:27,720
Two years ago, they started doing it, yeah.
163
00:18:26,700 --> 00:18:29,220
and I've generated podcasts that way.
164
00:18:29,220 --> 00:18:32,940
And I've gone through actually interestingly enough, some education and training
165
00:18:32,980 --> 00:18:40,980
recently that one of the training mechanisms in addition to here's a video or here's something to read, here's here's a podcast for you to listen to.
166
00:18:41,420 --> 00:18:52,900
And honestly, that, that level of here's a podcast to listen to is kind of annoying because I know off the top that it is generated and not real, right?
167
00:18:52,940 --> 00:18:56,519
And it's the two people with the banter between them.
168
00:18:56,500 --> 00:19:03,779
and some oms and ams that make it sound like it's real, but it's not so not my favorite.
169
00:19:03,779 --> 00:19:07,660
And Michael, you're just talking a minute or two about Amazon, right?
170
00:19:07,660 --> 00:19:12,579
Doing some AI generated podcasts too, right?
171
00:19:10,000 --> 00:19:12,000
Yeah, it's almost like I was setting up the story.
172
00:19:12,000 --> 00:19:41,359
Well, yeah, I mean the Amazon story is slightly different and it's more similar in some ways to what we talked about, Michael Martin and I talked about two weeks ago with the furore and the knitting world around these artificially generated, and it's also similar to the notebook elementing, artificially generated ones rather than people impersonating or attempting to, you know, full people with inauthentic content.
173
00:19:41,500 --> 00:19:55,500
What about this this tech dirt article Michael around Amazon getting into the they're calling it the AI podcast slop business. So pod slop maybe because we got it. We have to fund word for this. Don't we?
174
00:19:56,500 --> 00:20:06,299
Yeah, I think it's just so I like tech dirt because they they take a look at many of the topics that we look at but from a legal perspective
175
00:20:07,539 --> 00:20:18,819
etc. And kind of they can be kind of snarky. So I think they took the the verge article and extended kind of logical where it's going to.
176
00:20:20,099 --> 00:20:26,420
And so my my whole thing on both of these articles is kind of the there's different types of gates.
177
00:20:26,579 --> 00:20:34,779
Keepers and Andy you got the right gatekeeper discussion on Spotify and I'm I'm saying and Amazon has a different way of doing the gatekeeping, right?
178
00:20:31,500 --> 00:20:32,339
- Right.
179
00:20:34,259 --> 00:20:37,220
You're right, this is great.
180
00:20:37,220 --> 00:20:45,660
There's a great call out here in the middle of the detector piece, which mentions that the other stories from other outlets,
181
00:20:45,660 --> 00:20:53,579
the variety in Verge, didn't comment on the best part of the clip that Amazon used as an example,
182
00:20:53,579 --> 00:20:58,579
which is literally where the female voice software says,
183
00:21:00,140 --> 00:21:01,599
There's no gatekeeping if you make sense.
184
00:21:01,500 --> 00:21:14,400
It's incredibly tone deaf and very frustrating.
185
00:21:07,500 --> 00:21:37,619
Yeah, right. Yeah, I think, and we've talked to Ad nauseum, is that the right phrase I'm thinking of, about kind of the race to the bottom with AI knowledge, ingestion and not creation of real content, and how quickly are we going to get to the tipping point where 80 to 90 percent.
186
00:21:37,500 --> 00:21:45,500
And this stuff that people are looking for is actually AI generated instead of the real content created by users that adds new value.
187
00:21:46,500 --> 00:21:53,140
and I just want to look back to the conversation that I had at my school event yesterday,
188
00:21:53,859 --> 00:21:58,099
and also later in the same day I went to the internet things meet up in London where
189
00:21:58,819 --> 00:22:13,859
the host which has been running for 15 years and the host said like I'm not ever going to call this the physical AI meet up. As a nod to the encroachment of these terms on all things,
190
00:22:05,500 --> 00:22:09,819
I saw that. I thought that was perfect.
191
00:22:07,000 --> 00:22:08,759
[laughing]
192
00:22:15,460 --> 00:22:16,299
That's bad.
193
00:22:16,500 --> 00:22:27,619
This, this idea of authenticity becoming something that is valued or the premium I think is really important.
194
00:22:27,619 --> 00:22:37,859
Now there's a danger that that becomes muddied by people then striving for those authentic verified badges.
195
00:22:37,859 --> 00:22:46,500
If that's what we put value on, if we value the blue checkmark which you can now buy for eight dollars a month from Twitter for as many boxes.
196
00:22:46,500 --> 00:22:52,140
you can afford then you're valuing the wrong thing.
197
00:22:52,140 --> 00:22:55,019
You need to actually build real connections.
198
00:22:55,019 --> 00:22:56,420
You need to have real opinions.
199
00:22:56,420 --> 00:22:57,740
You need to make mistakes.
200
00:22:57,740 --> 00:23:00,299
You need to own those mistakes.
201
00:23:00,299 --> 00:23:13,180
You need to not be the agreeable and within built bias and nature stuff that's coming from AI.
202
00:23:13,180 --> 00:23:16,519
And I think I equally, similarly.
203
00:23:16,500 --> 00:23:32,599
to the author of the piece on tecta, want to believe that these authentic opinions and authentic connections will be valid and can be valued.
204
00:23:30,000 --> 00:23:34,079
Yeah. I think should be valued.
205
00:23:35,500 --> 00:23:47,500
Well, and that's a value judgment that we have, which unfortunately flies in the face of people with lots of money and compute power and other things to drive in a different direction.
206
00:23:47,500 --> 00:24:05,500
There's the truthiness indicator that needs to be applied here too, which kind of pushes folks doesn't it too. This is an authentic human voice with an authentic opinion. And now we're right back again where we started, which is how and who do you trust to verify that.
207
00:24:05,500 --> 00:24:21,500
If it's, I know Andy offline, because I've met you and I've seen you in person and therefore I know that's obviously an impossibility in our global, you know, reach and the connections that we have now.
208
00:24:21,500 --> 00:24:25,420
It's a strange problem, and a strange world we're living into, isn't it?
209
00:24:25,500 --> 00:24:37,259
It is. And I was talking to some older members of the group, the lunch yesterday where they were talking about this challenge, as they see it with young people surrounded by AM,
210
00:24:37,259 --> 00:24:50,460
IAM models and digital ways of learning, who how do we ensure that they have critical thinking skills when they, all of their knowledge is potentially intermediated by, disintermediated,
211
00:24:50,460 --> 00:24:55,220
by tech tools and platforms and companies.
212
00:24:55,500 --> 00:25:15,500
And, yeah, the answer is it's hard. I don't, there is no single answer to this. Isn't the same way there's no single answer to how do you verify and prove that you've known somebody and that they're real short of, you know, meeting them in person. You may, you may not do that in the future, but you can still reach it.
213
00:25:09,500 --> 00:25:20,539
And you may not have actually met them, because it could be somebody acting as them.
214
00:25:15,500 --> 00:25:16,500
Yeah.
215
00:25:16,500 --> 00:25:17,500
Yeah.
216
00:25:17,500 --> 00:25:22,500
or you have met them and they're using
217
00:25:20,539 --> 00:25:27,779
You've met someone who says they were them.
218
00:25:22,539 --> 00:25:28,220
they're using an assistant or an agent to communicate with you, right?
219
00:25:24,500 --> 00:25:27,859
Yes, that's possible.
220
00:25:28,220 --> 00:25:30,819
'Cause that's happening now as well, right?
221
00:25:30,819 --> 00:25:33,900
You can have your auto email reply, you know,
222
00:25:33,900 --> 00:25:35,859
which happens already, you know,
223
00:25:35,859 --> 00:25:39,380
your generator response to the query that you just get.
224
00:25:40,420 --> 00:25:47,480
I don't know, there's a lot to this and a much, much too unpack as we go forward And Michael.
225
00:25:47,500 --> 00:25:56,299
Well, there's a point that kind of relates to AI and some of the new accessibility capabilities that Apple is bringing forward, right?
226
00:25:54,500 --> 00:26:03,980
Well, I purposely chose this article after seeing everything else over the last week on AI because this is positive use.
227
00:26:03,980 --> 00:26:22,059
And so one thing that Apple does every year right around this time is their in alignment with global accessibility awareness day is they announce what new accessibility features are going to be worked on over the next year, et cetera.
228
00:26:22,059 --> 00:26:24,480
And Apple's taking a lot of heat for the last few years.
229
00:26:24,500 --> 00:26:31,500
On how bad their AI story is, how much they over promised and under delivered, etc.
230
00:26:31,500 --> 00:26:51,500
And what they're showing here appears to be new capabilities in the scope of accessibility features that will be powered on the new AI stuff that they're implementing, or are rumored to be implementing with WWDC coming up in two and a half weeks.
231
00:26:51,500 --> 00:26:54,460
And what's really exciting is
232
00:26:54,500 --> 00:27:09,000
how they're using some of the basic AI features of image recognition and other features to improve the accessibility features on the iPhone and and you have a thing.
233
00:27:09,500 --> 00:27:15,539
Well, I think this is great for sure, and I think it's interesting that these two things come in together.
234
00:27:15,539 --> 00:27:39,200
I think another way of looking at this is headlines after WWDC is five things that Apple Sherlock took this year, and one of them is Be My Eyes, which is a tool that a lot of people have been using to get assistance, but of course it's wonderful if that is built into the device and you don't need to be asking somebody on the other side or anywhere on the planet to help you.
235
00:27:40,500 --> 00:27:56,500
We did cover a few months ago, a BBC show with a blind presenter where he went to California and tested out a ton of new tools and accessibility aids that were in this same vein.
236
00:27:57,500 --> 00:28:04,500
But yeah, I think it is that there are very solid good outcomes from the development of this technology.
237
00:28:05,000 --> 00:28:17,720
>> Yeah, and so many of these are features that they've been working on prior to this for a very long time that have been very good.
238
00:28:05,500 --> 00:28:07,500
And I'm excited by these as well.
239
00:28:17,720 --> 00:28:26,119
They've not been at the level of some of the additional things that you would buy for assistance.
240
00:28:26,119 --> 00:28:36,259
The more and more that those capabilities get built into the operating system or into the hardware, the more...
241
00:28:35,000 --> 00:28:43,500
accessible they are for all users instead of having to go out and buy an additional accessibility feature.
242
00:28:43,500 --> 00:28:55,000
So, the thing that most people don't think about when they hear accessibility is accessibility is not just a feature for people who have some reason to buy accessibility.
243
00:28:55,000 --> 00:28:58,000
They make things better for everyone.
244
00:28:59,000 --> 00:29:00,920
- I'm gonna, I agree with you completely.
245
00:29:00,920 --> 00:29:02,079
I'm gonna suggest though,
246
00:29:02,079 --> 00:29:05,200
because we're running short on time,
247
00:29:05,200 --> 00:29:07,240
and there's a topic we wanna talk about,
248
00:29:07,240 --> 00:29:08,519
especially for one of our listeners,
249
00:29:08,519 --> 00:29:10,680
and because we're all interested in it as well,
250
00:29:10,680 --> 00:29:14,279
that we skip over the piece from the Atlantic here,
251
00:29:14,279 --> 00:29:15,680
which we'll include in the show notes,
252
00:29:15,680 --> 00:29:20,240
which is about countermeasures to AI wearables.
253
00:29:20,240 --> 00:29:22,720
So they link you as you go around.
254
00:29:22,720 --> 00:29:25,559
So I'll leave that one, a reference to it in the show,
255
00:29:25,559 --> 00:29:27,279
for you to go and come to the site,
256
00:29:27,279 --> 00:29:29,000
check out the link and have a read.
257
00:29:29,000 --> 00:29:51,440
If you're able to read links from the Atlantic and instead move on to a link that we got in from I saw because he or friend Ian he prepped back to this on Kickstarter and I get notifications to say you know your friend is just back this thing and I had a look and I believe Michael you had a ping from him as well but this is a virtual world to miss him.
258
00:29:52,000 --> 00:29:57,039
Yeah, and what's really cool about that, and I'm going to transition back and back forward,
259
00:29:57,039 --> 00:30:01,359
is I did want to mention the one feature that they added that I had not thought about,
260
00:30:01,359 --> 00:30:07,200
and I've never thought about was wheelchair navigation for the Vision Pro.
261
00:30:09,119 --> 00:30:26,480
Because I've been doing some really cool stuff in there, and I think accessibility around movement is a feature you wouldn't think about on an iPhone, and that got me to think about the vision pro which is around virtual reality and physical reality which would have been a beautiful transition into the virtual world history.
262
00:30:27,000 --> 00:30:37,079
Well, there you go. And as you can tell listeners, as usual, we are on point with thoroughly prepared everything we're going to say to you, and that's how you can tell that we are
263
00:30:32,500 --> 00:30:34,759
[laughing]
264
00:30:38,640 --> 00:30:39,480
Yes.
265
00:30:39,480 --> 00:30:40,740
[laughing]
266
00:30:40,740 --> 00:30:43,160
No, I love the video of this.
267
00:30:43,160 --> 00:30:48,819
I thought the Kickstarter is like a really cool thing when E-Pread reached out to me with it too.
268
00:30:48,819 --> 00:30:52,259
I was like, "Hmm, do I have money to put aside?"
269
00:30:52,259 --> 00:30:54,900
They can take a dollar, right?
270
00:30:54,900 --> 00:30:59,740
So, yeah, same here.
271
00:30:55,000 --> 00:31:12,440
Yeah, it's one of those things that I think I'll probably back because I, you know, I'm strongly care about it, but I'm not sure how much I'll put in here, but my first thought was Ian should be like hosting this thing, right? He should be the person narrating the documentary, right? Or the,
272
00:31:07,500 --> 00:31:09,440
- Absolutely, absolutely.
273
00:31:08,000 --> 00:31:10,119
- Yeah, or are they speaking on it?
274
00:31:12,440 --> 00:31:17,160
or whatever this comes, it'll be the, be the virtual tour guide for the, for the virtual worlds
275
00:31:18,000 --> 00:31:22,839
I'm still wondering, you know, the, when it's done,
276
00:31:24,339 --> 00:31:27,779
how, how will this scale?
277
00:31:27,779 --> 00:31:33,420
If they're gonna make virtual spaces available in the future, so you can relive those spaces,
278
00:31:34,420 --> 00:31:35,940
how will that scale?
279
00:31:35,940 --> 00:31:37,480
I mean, it's just in
280
00:31:37,500 --> 00:31:56,880
an infinite number of potential old virtual worlds that they have to recreate and maintain and keep working on new hardware and new operating system or new web browsers or new web tech now. I mean, there's so many things that pop it down my mind of how can they do this while I'm cheering from the other side saying, please do this, please do this.
281
00:31:57,500 --> 00:32:07,799
I mean, there's not like a default Kubernetes setup for Apple II capabilities that you just spin up a new one when you need it for for Newton.
282
00:32:06,000 --> 00:32:35,759
well you say that there's another link we have here just to go to head towards the exit for the virtual operating system museum which is a download you can go get from the virtual OS museum dot org huge multi gigabyte download but it gives you a set of emulators for all of these old operating systems going back to the 70s, I believe here.
283
00:32:36,000 --> 00:32:45,039
Certainly, really niche systems, as well as much more mainstream ones.
284
00:32:45,039 --> 00:32:52,480
And yeah, there's no reason why you need one of those, you wouldn't install one of these older virtual worlds on it, I suppose.
285
00:32:52,500 --> 00:32:59,660
Yeah, the again the the point of the virtual world was to be there together and if you're running your local VM
286
00:32:58,000 --> 00:33:13,599
Yeah, I think there's an element of preservation of the environments, but also the narration of the stories of the people who inhabited those spaces.
287
00:33:13,599 --> 00:33:18,200
I wanted to just round up because it was something that came to me during the show.
288
00:33:18,200 --> 00:33:24,299
We've talked about virtual worlds at the end here, but we also talked a bit about identity in this episode,
289
00:33:24,299 --> 00:33:28,019
and something that I came across my radar just today was
290
00:33:28,000 --> 00:33:58,000
this really interesting website which enables you to explore the historical geospatial information about a historical set of letters from the 14th and 15th centuries between traders primarily in Italy but across the south of Europe and as far north as London and it really gave me the... you Michael you were saying how to...
291
00:33:58,000 --> 00:34:03,000
how do people know whether they've met? Have they met? How... when were these letters being sent?
292
00:34:03,000 --> 00:34:06,000
How do you know that they're getting to the destination? All of those kind of things?
293
00:34:06,000 --> 00:34:11,000
These are problems that have existed for hundreds of years. Are these people my friend or not?
294
00:34:11,000 --> 00:34:16,000
If I've only met them in person once or possibly never, I'm just corresponding with them.
295
00:34:16,000 --> 00:34:26,679
In an analog form in this case, this is just a really nice visualization that came through my inbox through one of the newsletters I follow today.
296
00:34:24,500 --> 00:34:32,679
Wow, this is so cool, and you can see Gambini Piero and how he communicated with people in Pisa from London.
297
00:34:28,000 --> 00:34:53,559
And you can -- but also the numbers of letters sent between these roots is vast, you know, 5,000 letters down to one single letter over a period of time.
298
00:34:32,679 --> 00:34:36,039
And so, therefore, he's probably real,
299
00:34:36,039 --> 00:34:40,179
unless there was an AI Time Traveler that created documentation.
300
00:34:43,699 --> 00:34:46,340
Yeah, phenomenal.
301
00:34:47,500 --> 00:34:54,500
And nobody sent letters to Germany.
302
00:34:53,559 --> 00:34:57,719
Ah. This.
303
00:34:54,000 --> 00:34:58,000
Well, just in this particular geospatial, you know,
304
00:34:58,000 --> 00:35:07,920
There's a period of time. Anywho. That's all we have time for. But it's, uh, we've been all over the map, which is an appropriate way to end.
305
00:35:03,500 --> 00:35:05,500
Yes, oh my gosh, look at that
306
00:35:09,000 --> 00:35:11,659
[laughing]
307
00:35:09,380 --> 00:35:12,079
Well, if if you want to have your map represented
308
00:35:12,760 --> 00:35:19,480
Drop us a line over at games that worked up is we'll pick it up the next time and maybe even write you a letter back to to prove that we're real
309
00:35:19,760 --> 00:35:21,760
Maybe probably not
310
00:35:20,000 --> 00:35:38,119
And if you need to contact us on, if you need to contact the show as well, you can always contact us at podcast that it's going to work up is, and we have that old-fashioned digital mail system that you can send us stuff to, and we'll, we'll, uh, should be able to pick that up.
311
00:35:30,500 --> 00:35:42,659
Awesome. See everyone.
312
00:35:37,000 --> 00:35:39,159
Next time, at Games I Work,
313
00:35:38,119 --> 00:35:41,320
See ya.
314
00:35:39,159 --> 00:35:42,619
- Thought this. (laughing)
315
00:35:42,500 --> 00:35:52,500
[music]
316
00:35:45,500 --> 00:35:50,619
You've been listening to gamesetwork.biz, the podcast about gaming technology and play.
317
00:35:50,619 --> 00:35:52,860
We are part of the blueberry podcasting network.
318
00:35:52,860 --> 00:35:57,099
And we'd like to thank the band, Random Encounters for their song, Big Blue.
