insider secrets to selecting your process the part that's today talking a lot about how to select a processing partner partner how to qualify them how to drive them crazy that kind of stuff. And then so this has everything to do with the hemp industry. If you're a hemp processor, hemp investor, if you've got hemp biomass, you want to sell or process or you're growing, you're trying to figure that out. We're gonna have a few sessions just specifically to you guys, and we've got a special coming up at the end of the show that we want to talk to you about. So stay to the end, CBD processing, investing in hemp, hemp processing equipment, we have all of that pre extraction and post extraction as well. All right, we got a lot of good stuff to know. I know we've got you've got I think 480 slide

Good job. All right. So before without any further ado, let's get into insider trinkets secrets for selecting Insider. trinket insider trinkets. You know, I guess I'm into trinket gifts. trinket giveaway whatever it has downloads we got there. We
Dr. Jon 03:35
got it. You got it. We got it. All right here. So let's see here. Let's let's cut over to the presentation. Here's insider secrets to selecting a hemp processor.
Randall Thompson 03:47
I like it
Dr. Jon 03:47
is it processor or processor?
Randall Thompson 03:48
Yeah, it depends on if you're from Canadian.
Dr. Jon 03:50
Yeah, that's right.
Randall Thompson 03:51
Canadians process
Dr. Jon 03:52
it's a processor,
Randall Thompson 03:53
a processor. And that is actually grammatically correct. Because when when the vowel precede a consonant followed by a vowel, it's a long
Dr. Jon 04:01
Oh, wow.
Randall Thompson 04:02
linguistics
Dr. Jon 04:06
burn. Okay, this stuff that we're gonna be going over is way more interesting than a little less than No, is that okay? So here's the outline, guys. Okay, nope, no problem. Let's go on. Here, we're gonna go over some criteria for evaluation of a processor. So if you're a farmer, or if you're an investor involved with a farmer, and you want to basically process your crop, not all processes are equal. So you're going to want to apply some criteria and to refer your selection of where you're going to send all your stuff. Okay, okay. And so that that is a criteria for evaluation, we're going to go over some of the criteria that we apply and then also shazam, um, we have a very detailed list of basically a vendor qualification guide. So I don't know if you saw that here. You can see look at this. It's actually both pages with hundreds of questions, a detailed list just for you. Okay, then. We're gonna go into basically how to prepare your crop or your processor.
Randall Thompson 05:03
Beautiful.
Dr. Jon 05:03
Okay, we're going to talk a little bit about setting expectations, setting your own expectations and then also setting the expectations of the people around you. If you if you told everybody you were going to be a millionaire with your 50 acres of CBD hemp crop, you're probably not going to be helped. So you need to set your expectations properly, and transportation, how to transport and just some just some things there but
Randall Thompson 05:26
millions?
Dr. Jon 05:27
Yeah, tips and tricks and the millions that you're going to be putting into your trailer and how high ending off to your to your processor. So that's the outline. We're kind of over it. Yeah, give you a little clue here. Okay.
Randall Thompson 05:39
You know why it looked like you finished this one the criteria because it had a check.
Dr. Jon 05:44
Oh, you mean this? Right. Right up here. You mean?
Randall Thompson 05:45
Last one?
Dr. Jon 05:46
Yeah. That one? Yeah. Yeah.
Randall Thompson 05:48
Looks like it's already done.
Dr. Jon 05:49
That's it. That is our criteria. You want to know about accrued time. That's our criteria. Check. The criterias
Randall Thompson 05:56
moving on to prepare your crop.
Dr. Jon 06:00
Okay, so here's the criteria for evaluation. Okay. Okay. These are just some things that
Randall Thompson 06:05
pretty colors.
Dr. Jon 06:06
Yeah, I've kind of been kind of in color eyes a lot.
Randall Thompson 06:08
Yeah, this is nice.
Dr. Jon 06:10
Yeah, I like it's all nice complimentary colors. Do you notice that?
Randall Thompson 06:13
I like the wheel
Dr. Jon 06:14
Yeah, this is like, it's not it's not even it's not a table. Look at the wheel. It's got little little wings on it. Like it's spinning? Oh, yeah, I like it. So let's just kind of go over some of these things. By the way, if you want to get the evaluation criteria, you want to get the downloadable checklist, the awesome checklist. It's not it's not a little rinky dink, you know, three questions, it is super exhaustive, okay, if you want that just interact with the bot, put your name in there, tell the guys you want it and they'll send it to you. Okay, yeah, so here it is, let's just go look at this from a 30,000 foot level, okay, you're gonna want to make sure that your processor has quality system on the quality system can be a couple made up of a couple different things it can be it can be a GMP quality system, it can be a combination of a GMP, organic, ah, you know, type of quality system. The third thing it can be is like an ISO system, okay, so, usually you want to select for those processors that have gone through a quality, a quality check. In other words, a third party has come in and given them a certificate for compliancy to that particular quality system.
Randall Thompson 07:18
Beautiful.
Dr. Jon 07:18
Okay, and that includes like organic certification, I mean, if you're getting organic, organic materials processed, you're going to want to make sure that go to an organic processor. So the oils that you get back are organic certified, or if you go to any other processor or you yourself are not certified for processing in an organic sense, then you can't really label those legally as organic. That's one thing on GMP basically, is another quality system that third parties, either the state and or third parties come in and qualify you to certain different you know,
Randall Thompson 07:53
manufacturing practices.
Dr. Jon 07:54
Exactly.
Randall Thompson 07:55
Good Manufacturing practices which is GMP.
Dr. Jon 07:57
Yeah. So usually they certify you to 21 CFR Part 111 110. You know, there's different different different, you know, sets of rules with each of those different parts. Okay, so you would want to know, okay, what what have you been certified to? Is it a food safety standard? Or is it a nutraceutical standard? Or what it what is? So those are the things that you want to ask
Randall Thompson 08:19
so those are the quality systems?
Dr. Jon 08:21
Those are the quality systems? Yeah. Why is that important? Well, you know that, it First of all, it'll probably take them longer to process it, but you can be assured that there's all kinds of checks and balances that are built into the process that are meant to ensure the quality quality, the output, and also the quality of the oil that you're going to be getting. So it's a lot of a lot of things. I think that's probably actually one of the one of the number one things and tied for the number one thing also would be like customer service,
Randall Thompson 08:50
absolutely.
Dr. Jon 08:50
Okay. So if you it's kind of like, Okay, if they don't have a quality system, don't go there at all. Or if they aren't working towards a quality system, they don't have a plan quality system, or you can ask them specific questions, again, better in here that that would allow you to understand what is the functioning of their quality system, then the second thing really, is customer service side of it?
Randall Thompson 09:10
Yes.
Dr. Jon 09:10
In other words, how are these guys gonna - Do they pick up the phone?
Randall Thompson 09:14
doThey interact, do they communicate? Or do they go dark?
Dr. Jon 09:16
Do they go dark? Yeah. Or do they not talk to you or, you know, whatever it is. Now, if there's all kinds of startup operations out there and a lot of times what you want to do with those startup operations, and make sure that if you're gonna work with a startup operation, that's really great. And just know that you're going to be interfacing with those guys, you're going to be interfacing with them. And you're going to want to make sure that they have a good you know, customer service. In other words, they're going to be calling you or they're going to let you know where they are and process or have some sort of someone who basically
Randall Thompson 09:45
Yeah, and somebody who's actually going to answer your questions and not just keep trying to sell you something, right. They're gonna, you know, educate you help you with the problems that you're having. And, you know, that's a good quid pro quo.
Dr. Jon 09:56
Yeah, good customer service. You know, a lot of people see okay, well, that's not good customer service unless I'm happy. Okay, the customer service is not there to actually make you happy. The customer service is there gave the real skinny Yeah,
Randall Thompson 10:07
to help you solve your problem. it may not be the solution you really want,
Dr. Jon 10:12
right? But they're they're there to give you the you know, okay, so how long is this going to take? Well, you have, you know, 500 pounds left in inventory, you have 600 pounds in crude and you have 600 kilos to distillate, and it'll take another four weeks to get to that or 10 weeks or whatever. Yeah, so whatever, whatever it is, that they they should give you that.
Randall Thompson 10:33
Absolutely.
Dr. Jon 10:34
Customers who are using the IGWlab, and they're using that will be able to basically with a push of the button logs are using the system, they'll be able to tell you all those things. So that's pretty good. So that's very good.
Randall Thompson 10:45
And because that is a manufacturing efficiency system
Dr. Jon 10:49
manufacturing execution and quality.
Randall Thompson 10:51
Yes, all of them.
Dr. Jon 10:52
Yeah.
Randall Thompson 10:53
So it helps your efficiency
Dr. Jon 10:54
right.
Randall Thompson 10:55
So it's an execution and
Dr. Jon 10:57
yeah, it basically it will help you mistake proof your operations
Randall Thompson 11:00
which is beautiful. So as part of this criteria, as Dr. Jon's going through this, remember that the processor is actually a manufacturer and they're you're contracting with them to manufacture or to process your biomass into something saleable, right?
Dr. Jon 11:13
So from an investor standpoint, okay, I'm investing in say, a girl operation or a farm field, right, I have a couple hundred bucks and seeds and I probably got another couple hundred thousand you know, all told for you know, say 100 acres or something like that, um, you're gonna want to make sure that you know, the place that you're sending all that material to, we're going to have no give you the right materials, to be able to get a hold of them. Um, let's let's talk also the third, the third leg of the stool, actually, and that would be clinical grade oils. So no surprises guys that this is in here, I consider the board. There are a lot of different ways to process your crop. Okay. And mainly, I think clinical grade oils are the most saleable oils in you're going to be reducing all kinds of risks for residuals in your oils if you go with a co2 processor so that that's that's just that it's not a lot of people argue with it. Oh, well, after distillate you can't see it. And those guys have only used GC headspace. If you use other like other more sensitive techniques, GC headspace is not a sensitive technique at all. It says there's nothing in there but guess what, there's all kinds of stuff in there just can't see it because the limit of detection is too high.
Randall Thompson 12:23
You sound, like an analytical chemist. Yeah,
Dr. Jon 12:25
the look the end of the day. I are I feel it in my bones
Randall Thompson 12:31
it's all in there and hints that
Dr. Jon 12:34
we can see everything.
Randall Thompson 12:35
Yeah, that's why in the industry, we even call I mean, just going at a high level, we there is no such thing as T-free.
Dr. Jon 12:41
No, there's not. There's always going to be a molecule or two and we can see the molecules.
Randall Thompson 12:44
That's why the FDA prefers you to use THC-Non-Detect
Dr. Jon 12:48
Exactly. A good point. Good point.
Randall Thompson 12:49
Wow. I'm done for the day.
Dr. Jon 12:53
I think we better stop now. Okay.
Randall Thompson 12:55
Thank you for coming.
Dr. Jon 12:57
Okay, let's talk about price. Everybody wants to go right. Okay. Look, price and flexibility of terms, there's a couple different ways to get your crop done. Yep. And that would be you know, there's the split idea where, okay, I've done the work I get I get all my biomass and I send it to a facility and then we split the outcome or something along if
Randall Thompson 13:14
they're if they're processing it to distillate or oil or isolate, then whatever that in is, there's some element split, right?
Dr. Jon 13:23
Exactly. Now, the processor is going to have its own his own or her own criteria for you, you know, like, okay, we're, you know, process is not going to spend, you know, 80 days working up a bunch of sticks, or moldy material or material that's been run before, or at that other stuff, or a heavily season material. Okay? These are all things that are unknown defects within a hemp crop. So you know, Don't be that guy livers that on a split, most of you guys are going to do a toll.
Randall Thompson 13:49
Yes.
Dr. Jon 13:50
And the toll is where you just pay per pound. And that actually works out well, because they do all in the output of that. And the processor should be able to tell and I'll get into this is where it really setting expectations is really important in that, you know, the processors are able to tell you what your yield is, okay, so and there's a price for that you can go shop the price around for how long and then testing availability, you want to make sure that you know, they're First of all, they're going to be able to test it at the very beginning, give feedback to you, Hey, this is how much you have left, you know, this is how much you should have. And then testing throughout the process, okay, so you can understand where all your materials went. And then also capacity in time, which is important if you're going to want to make sure that you have capacity. So that's
Randall Thompson 14:28
how that's where you're going to get in the queue. So just because it shows up at the processor doesn't mean they're ready to process. Right? You they may have 17 clients ahead ahead of you. Yeah. So make sure that you define that and set those expectations. That's what this evaluation criteria is all about is making sure you understand their process, right and that they understand what you can bring to them to make it more effective and more efficient for you to get that get the best pricing and the best service.
Dr. Jon 14:54
Exactly. Um, so yeah, that's the capacity and timing now all of those items are are really detail in this document again, put your put your name into drift and we'll send that off to you guys.
Randall Thompson 15:06
Yeah, you like you? Because I'm going to send that out to you. Right? Yeah.
Dr. Jon 15:09
So okay, so let's kind of move on from that. I mean that that's the those are what I consider the good. Well, it's secrets.
Randall Thompson 15:16
Well done. Yeah, this is a that's a good wheel. I like I like the wheel looks kinda like a water wheel.
Dr. Jon 15:21
I like that little wheel wheel wheel power wheel across this the power. Okay, so how to prepare your crop for processing notes. I have a little circle in the background.
Randall Thompson 15:30
I like the little This is nice.
Dr. Jon 15:32
Yeah, I did that I did that crop circle Get it? You draw those circles yourself? okay, here's the process, harvest, dry shucknbuck and package. Okay, this is the this is the process. That's what this is.
Randall Thompson 15:45
That's what you're doing?
Dr. Jon 15:46
Yeah. How do you prepare your crop for processing. So this is what you this is what you're doing. And you're going to have to go through each one of these steps. We're not going to talk about harvesting today. Just suffice it to say, there's a lot of different ways to harvest it. You got manual techniques actually go things down now.
Randall Thompson 16:00
And that's typically in the fall. That's why it's orange.
Dr. Jon 16:02
Exactly. And, and then you have the combine, combine. Well, they have special attachments. You know, and sometimes they have those like, you know, cutters that they put on the side of a tractor that kind of flipped down a little sharp. Yeah, so a lot of people do it that way. Um, whatever. So just go ahead and sickle Yes. See what you can do with harvesting. I'm not going to talk about that. I have seen seen some very cool harvesters. I've had like a nice one. I mean for hemp, okay,
Randall Thompson 16:29
well, not as much for
Dr. Jon 16:30
Okay, well, there are a lot of innovation going on there. Of course, you know, the big machine companies are trying to you know, capitalize on it and some people are growing, you know, thousands of acres, a lot of different you would you would harvest it in different ways. Depending on what crop was, if you're, if you're growing for fiber, you're going to have to it's a back of the tractor type. If you're growing for CBD, or CBG, or one of the other cannabinoids that's available out, then you're probably going to have[unintelligible]. That's kind of how it works. You got dry shucking bucket package, so let's just kind of move on to the drying side of this. Okay, a couple different ways to dry, obviously, you need to let it see one way to do it is let it sit in the field. You know, in summer, the water of the air is full of water due to the humidity and dew point, all of that stuff right um, as soon as a fall hits, we're coming up on the 90 days or so odd so days that takes to flower the flowers start popping out the state gets called into the testing and everything and it's time to harvest the harvest it some people just kind of cut it down and let it sit there field for you know, because it's like, hey, you're stressed the water drops out, you know, due to the cooler weather out of air it plants will dry. Yeah, that of course doesn't work. If it's super humid out there are probably not going to work in South for example, yeah. But you know, if you're in a mountainous climate, or if you're dry, arid climate or if you're in a dry arid, you know growing climate or you have a cooler temperature you got to make you can that way. So that's one thing, a lot of people hang them in the out in the barn, or Yeah, outbuilding or whatever. Um, if you are in a humid climate, you're going to need to have some sort of way to humidify and you're going to have to have an indoor sight indoor. So this may be a warehouse. In I've seen people, you know, basically put them up on pallet racks, no 30 foot high pallet racks, and they have the whole entire pallet rack filled up with, you know, hanging.
Randall Thompson 18:16
Yeah, that's it.
Dr. Jon 18:17
Yeah, they just hang them on there. And then they dehumidified
Randall Thompson 18:19
walk through the whole side of hemp.
Dr. Jon 18:21
I've also seen, you know, like, those shipping containers, yeah, with, with, you know, where they go, they put air through them. And it's humidified air or even just, you know, air hot air, for example. And they put that through the issue with that, of course, is you're you're losing a lot of aromas and flavors. Yeah. So that's something
Randall Thompson 18:37
you don't want to do that
Dr. Jon 18:38
heating in conveyor machines. That's another way to do it. The issue with that, of course, is that you can literally ruin your entire, you got to be very careful with a heated conveyor machine.
Randall Thompson 18:47
Wouldn't you have to do that too? Like, if you're in a boxcar?
Dr. Jon 18:51
Yeah.
Randall Thompson 18:51
Doesn't that heat up like an oven? And then it does slow and meaner to happen. Something similar? Is that gonna heat it up?
Dr. Jon 18:57
I think, yeah, I think there's a lot of heating and air machines, what it's not, they have like infrared on there or they have some sort of active eater on top and that that it's just a warranty. So the time has to be a lot less. So.
Randall Thompson 19:11
What's a fluidized bed?
Dr. Jon 19:12
that is a piece of equipment that basically you can put the whole plant in a blow up put them on top of a kind of perforated bed and it blows up through and then it can it can condense for example, you know, the aromas coming out so that that's what they are.
Randall Thompson 19:27
So it just kind of bubbles. It fluidizes the buds
Dr. Jon 19:30
Yeah, exactly. It fluidizes the buds. And it can be made continuous as long as it's a bucket. So just keep that in mind. So there's there's different ways to do that. And we have a fluidized bed dryer that we've also done the hanging outdoors in the barn and we've done this indoor control area so we've done it all with with various the choco means there's also we've done the sit in the field. I mean, some of the some of the we like we left the curve, so and let it dry out.
Randall Thompson 19:55
It probably had the most terps
Dr. Jon 19:57
Yeah, it was nice was Yeah,
Randall Thompson 19:58
I would think that it would
Dr. Jon 19:59
Do you need to cure? Suppose you're going to have a portion of your crop that you want to maintain as smoke or flower. Right? Okay, if that's the case, then you're going to need to cure, you're going to want to try to avoid techniques that are actively and rapidly drying or product because all the you know, chirps are going to go out of it. So you don't know. And there are these there are these like heward technicians there. They have their craft, they're artists there, we would say they're honing artist Ras. Yeah, they're artists. Yeah. So they know how to work. There's all kinds of methods out there. And you know, a lot of people have, you know, everybody has their cure method. Oh, yeah, I hear it. Or sometimes they'll even put like a T in there. Kind of like purity inside of them. So what it is, though, is basically it's slowing down the process. Right.
Randall Thompson 20:44
But it does, does it also and when you're doing the curable curing other things, you're also adding a flavor.
Dr. Jon 20:52
Yeah. So yeah. So your, for example, your terpenes will, we'll get ripe, just say so it's a ripen process. Okay, yeah, that's sort of interesting. And there's different ways to do that. But a lot of people just use like blue totes, or, you know, something where they put the put the materials in, and they let it sit for a couple days, they'll burp it by adding more air into it and let it sit,
Randall Thompson 21:12
I so desperately want to say yeah, in the middle of winter, my totes get blue. That's it.
Dr. Jon 21:18
Yours too? For extraction, maybe you want the aroma notes in oil. So um, you know, if you're, that's one thing, you're going to get some nice aroma notes. If you hang it, dry it kind of slowly. And so that that in terms of an extract, that's probably okay. Um,
Randall Thompson 21:32
can you also later on as you're, when you're capturing terps, I mean, you're also going to be able to add some of those aromas I mean, this is curated, you can also add back,
Dr. Jon 21:42
yeah, you can, you can add that back. But if you want to use natural terps, like a lot of the volatile terps are going to go away as your drying process. So you can it a lot of people want to do that's why they want to do like a live plant and they want to press it, okay, so they want to do like a live resin or something like that, which is really great. It's it's good, nice and fresh, it's closest thing to the actual plant, but the yield has been not very good, you know, so 50% gold or whatever, something like that. So
Randall Thompson 22:06
So remember that you're gonna give up yield for this process,
Dr. Jon 22:09
right? So you got you got a trade off just like any other process you have trade off in between, you are not gonna fall, you're not gonna press, you're not gonna take 100 acres or 50 acres or a single acre and just throw away half of it or whatever, right? I don't know what the actually do with the buds that mean the 50% that's not in there. It's like a low grade button. You may be able to sell that some extract it you know, that could be a possible way to do
Randall Thompson 22:30
it. But make sure you disclose that you did that.
Dr. Jon 22:32
Yeah, exactly. I think that what really is a problem if you if you ethanol, soak it first like a tea bag, and then try to ship that across the nation in a truck or whatever, because it's been sitting there, you know, last season's material and it's basically toxic waste, because it's got acetone or IPA involved or any of the other denaturants that come with ethanol extracts. Okay, so you know, that's that's a no no, okay, don't do that. Don't be that guy.
Randall Thompson 23:00
Don't be this guy either. Oh my gosh, that's a gross Okay,
Dr. Jon 23:03
this is basically some hemp that went bad on it. You know, it's a mold. So do not, you know, you got to dry it before you put it into your super sacks and that that white thing up there is a super sack and you just don't want to be the guy who that other way delivers
Randall Thompson 23:18
like a mushroom.
Dr. Jon 23:21
Doesn't it? It might be it might be a mushroom? I don't know. But anyway, yeah. So this is, you know, um, basically, if the materials are wet, and they're packed wet, they're gonna mold
Randall Thompson 23:29
Don't do that.
Dr. Jon 23:30
Don't be that guy. Yeah. So then, Okay, there we go. You're gonna deliver that to your processor. What is what is the processor going to do? They're going to if they're good processes, they're going to go through an incoming inspection in immediately back immediately into quarantine. They're going to look at the bag. They're gonna weigh the bag. They're gonna look at the book density say, Oh, this got a lot of water in it. Let's look for mold. We don't want any mold in our facility. Sorry, you're gonna have to take back that's just the way
Randall Thompson 23:52
Yeah, cuz it's, it's dangerous. I mean, it's just bad because it can it can corrupt everything in the plant. Right?
Dr. Jon 23:57
Um, don't be this guy either. That's that. Yeah. Okay, so you sticks and stems and Okay, so a lot of people want to, they want to basically just just harvest and and deliver a whole plant. Okay. We're going to talk a little bit about grinding here in the next couple sections, but this is sticks and stems. Okay, look, that is a nightmare for our processor.
Randall Thompson 24:20
You know, sticks and stems will break bang, but buds will never harm us
Dr. Jon 24:23
Why would I want to waste all my time, for example, you know, extracting that don't know why, but you know, that's poundage there. Why would you if you're a toller? Why would you want to play pay for that? Right?
Randall Thompson 24:34
Yeah, if you are the grower, and you're paying to have that tolled, right? You don't want to pay for that extra stems and sticks and
Dr. Jon 24:41
well, that goes for water too. Yeah, you know, like in the previous example, right? Why would you want to pay for to have so ate all that weight?
Randall Thompson 24:47
Right, because they're just pulling it out?
Dr. Jon 24:49
Right, exactly. waiting for it to dry while they're not doing this. The extractor might say you know what, this, there's so much weight here.
Randall Thompson 24:56
We're still gonna do it.
Dr. Jon 24:58
I'm still gonna do it. Yeah. Well, then That could be that could happen um you know the the bacteria is not going to really make it through the CO2
Randall Thompson 25:05
somedy with a GMP will not touch it
Dr. Jon 25:08
would not touch it. Yes we have incoming specifications
Randall Thompson 25:11
jumping back to the GMP mention I've seen lately this little C in front of GMP what is that
Dr. Jon 25:17
our current understanding of GMP regulations
Randall Thompson 25:21
current understand so it's not a different version, right? What's just the most current iteration
Dr. Jon 25:25
right. So GMP is a set of regulations that are general and and then the FDA has a myriad of interpretations and they also have emphasis rate word here yeah and emphases on different things you know, like what like one year they may look at Okay, we're gonna look at all you know, data integrity, for example on computer so
Randall Thompson 25:45
so the C will take into consideration that plethora of regulation
Dr. Jon 25:49
e plethora, that's the emphases of the plethora. Okay, let's let's let's move on here. We could go on all that wood trail and we are a rabbit trail rabbit trail. All
Randall Thompson 26:02
right, we do that especially with scotch bourbon, boy, then we can go down those rabbit trails like no, I think we need another glass.
Dr. Jon 26:11
Okay, well, you bourbon people you slam your burbon
Randall Thompson 26:14
we do not!
Dr. Jon 26:15
Okay, well, you know, we're the scotch is just a sipping.
Randall Thompson 26:18
It's exactly the same.
Dr. Jon 26:19
Oh, well, no,
Randall Thompson 26:21
I've seen people sure to throw it back. But I've seen people throw it back with scotch or burbon
Dr. Jon 26:25
they just - that's ignorance
Randall Thompson 26:26
So we're gonna have to do we're gonna we keep threatening to do the scotch burbon podcast
Dr. Jon 26:31
I think what we're gonna do is we're gonna have to publish a tasting live and then what we could do is have you know, people join in.
Randall Thompson 26:38
Hey, would you like that? Would you like to join us for a tasting? We'll send out the list and you get it and then we'll talk about tasting.
Dr. Jon 26:45
Exactly, yeah, and then like I have some poetry. Okay, and we will start off with bagpipes
Randall Thompson 26:51
Oh, wow.
Dr. Jon 26:52
You know, at least for the scotch bourbon doesn't have that what do you use? I spoke to
Randall Thompson 26:56
Aaron are you sorry for the banjo? No. No. banjo Are you kidding? Maybe a little good. Okay the things but I was talking to Aaron keys a lot of water back Oh yeah. And there the water is what makes the difference in both scotch and it would be fun to have him have do a cameo. Okay,
Dr. Jon 27:14
I guess so. So yeah, a lot they use them they use distilled water.
Randall Thompson 27:17
So that's why Kentucky's Kentucky bourbon because of the limestone water that filter and you get that flavor and the water and that's why scotch is scotch because you get it from the
Dr. Jon 27:27
Well, not all scotch is okay. No, let's let's have we'd like we gotta move on.
Randall Thompson 27:31
Sorry, guys.
Dr. Jon 27:35
Okay, sorry about that. Here we go. We got in nevermind, you got into it. Okay, now we're going to talk about shucking and getting shucking and bucking. Ah, this is Okay, what's the shuck and what's the buck?
Randall Thompson 27:45
Well, okay.
Dr. Jon 27:46
Yeah, I always wondered,
Randall Thompson 27:47
I guess is the right here,
Dr. Jon 27:48
I don't know. But here Here, look at here's a bunch of whole plants here sitting here, you can see the sticks and stuff, a lot of people sticks and literally just take and put that into a grinder. Everything gets
Randall Thompson 27:57
Oh, that's horrible.
Dr. Jon 27:58
Yeah. So they'll take the bud, you're gonna pay too much for that. And here, they'll take the button, they'll say, Oh, that's got one up. And then they take the whole thing. And then they look at it. And they say, why is this 3% that's because they took all the families and all the stuff
Randall Thompson 28:10
that lowers your potency significantly.
Dr. Jon 28:13
By the way, here's a here's an advanced secret of the universe. If you have, you know, if you self certify, like for example, in Oregon, you would self certify, okay, and one way to do that is just to you know, take if you have a hot crop, what you can do is buck it and grind that stuff up and then grind up all your families and everything and then just use that as a duty to dilute Oh yes, that's one way to be compliant if you are hot, but it's also going to reduce the amount of CBD that's in there. Um, I don't know if you guys follow that but that does not work in other states where the state comes out and samples your crop in the UK and they do it but yet we can talk a little bit about that later. But that's it has to do with your certificate of commercial viability and commercial fit for commerce. That's what I was looking for commercial ability. Okay, so moving on, here's a buck material. Okay, that's actually all the buds here you can see okay, but
Randall Thompson 29:04
does that shucknbuck that's shucked
Dr. Jon 29:06
Uh, yeah, I guess so. It's shucked in bucked. It's shucked and bucked Yeah, cuz it's looking it's got just got better. Yeah. So and then here's here's some, here's some site like somewhat round material.
Randall Thompson 29:17
So is that pre ground?
Dr. Jon 29:18
No, that's not that comes right out of our shucking. Bucher, yeah, that's what that comes out. No, no shucknbuck
Randall Thompson 29:25
it does it all at once.
Dr. Jon 29:26
This way. This process right here is called shucknbuck. This is this is really well due to grind it but our shuckNbuck will take it from this to this and it will just stamp gotcha there. Yeah. So, um, there's a lot of different types of shuck and buckers that are out there. There's one there's ones called where they where they just have like a plate and you have to cut off each of these branches and feed them individually above there. So that's something that a lot of people do. It's very time intensive.
Randall Thompson 29:50
That would take a while.
Dr. Jon 29:51
Yeah. So and then there's other ones that are on conveyor belts. Those are very, they're, they're bigger, they're more expensive, they're less portable, and we have one that we made That's that looks like this. You feed in the plant right here. You can see there's two brushes there.
Randall Thompson 30:05
So you just take the big plant.
Dr. Jon 30:06
Yeah.
Randall Thompson 30:06
And by the end
Dr. Jon 30:07
Yep.
Randall Thompson 30:07
And you shove it in
Dr. Jon 30:08
you literally shove it in with your hand and you pull it out
Randall Thompson 30:11
and you can feel it kind of rake off.
Dr. Jon 30:12
Yeah, it'll rake off. And then this is what you get out of that. Okay. And it basically all comes down here. And then you can you can hook this up to a cyclone. and this thing. it's got forkers on there. So you can put it on a trailer. Screw it down. And then you can so you can do it right in the field long. You don't have people. That's really yeah, you know, it's really quick. You can do I forget the exact numbers, but you can do 100 acres. you no matter. Okay, yeah, something like that.
Randall Thompson 30:37
Wow, that's really good. Yeah,
Dr. Jon 30:38
it's really fast. I mean, for a small machine that's not you know, it's sim out and Okay. Okay. And if you get that cyclon along with it, it's even better. So because
Randall Thompson 30:46
the cyclone is just kind of a vacuum. It's like a vacuum that pulls it from the bottom of into a receptacle whether, that's directly into a super sack or another bin
Dr. Jon 30:55
Or you can run this off in generator. So you just have it.
Randall Thompson 30:57
And so that's where you can do it in the field.
Dr. Jon 31:00
Yes. Yeah. And then you don't just let it sit in your garage over the weekend and are over the winter. Sorry, and then you use it the next summer, or you can buy one of these and go do it for people. You know, a lot of a lot of people are there's
Randall Thompson 31:11
that's a good business. Yeah, it's a great revenue option. Yeah, good.
Dr. Jon 31:14
So, here, a lot of people are wondering whether or not to grind or not. And that's that's his that means, you know, do you want to get this material and deliver it to the processor? Or do you want to deliver this type to the processor? Um, couple different things on that. Let's kind of move on here. Yeah, right. Yeah, a couple different things, if you have the, just the, just the buds, okay, and you put those into a bag, the bulk density is going to be pretty low. And so you're gonna have to deliver more bags, and it's going to have more volume, right? So that means you're gonna have to have, you know, probably more transportation costs, okay? Because it's just more bulky. So you need think about that and save on space and transportation costs. That's a real thing. It's better to try to, you know, bring it down to us, you know, ground material, I think, but to the processor doesn't matter, because they're going to read right away for their purpose. Okay,
Randall Thompson 32:00
they do. And one of the things that we do there, we do a pre grind and a post grind. By the way, that's that's this isn't that the cyclone there?
Dr. Jon 32:07
Yeah, that's the Oh yeah, that's the cyclone right here. You can just put that onto your onto your system and it'll suck it up, put it in one of the bins, you can have a roller bin there or you can have a truck or whatever you want. Right next to it. There's
Randall Thompson 32:18
a lot of people who are doing a grind at a very coarse grind. Prior to De-carb. Yeah, and one of there are a lot of communities that want that because they're nervous about ignition or De-carb, right? So when it's a coarser material, you're not going to get that they're less likely right to do that.
Dr. Jon 32:35
But if you would wait just like it. I mean, under decarb conditions, you're under vacuum so you're heating up under vacuum, so you're not going to get
Randall Thompson 32:41
well in most instances.
Dr. Jon 32:43
If you heat up GMP, it should be in a vacuum system know the best way to take you take, you know, like for example, take a pre roll and light it up. That's Decarb
Randall Thompson 32:50
Yeah,
Dr. Jon 32:50
yeah. So that's ignition. But it requires oxygen
Randall Thompson 32:53
That's true. So in a vacuum of it's not but you you've got to make sure that you're in complying to that not everybody does. Right. And because we've seen communities have had some processing plant blow up.
Dr. Jon 33:03
Oh, well, that yeah, that's because they have butane, or ethanol
Randall Thompson 33:06
they're worried about everything. And so they're, they're doing it, but one of the things that is interesting is if you process you can decarb at that coarser level. And then what one of the things that we've done now here is we will re grind after decarb.
Dr. Jon 33:17
Yep.
Randall Thompson 33:17
Because that gives you a fine or more even material that's better for extraction, and it cools it at the same time. So extract quicker,
Dr. Jon 33:25
right, exactly. The way I would say that exact same things, it would be correctly it is it is it tightens the particle size distribution. So that gives you more uniform and better extraction.
Randall Thompson 33:36
That's what I said,
Dr. Jon 33:36
Yeah. Let's go on here to the next one. Okay. The other thing seeds in material can be an issue
Randall Thompson 33:44
Don't be seedy
Dr. Jon 33:45
don't Well, yeah, sometimes it's good. If you have an outdoor crop, you're gonna have some seeds,
Randall Thompson 33:49
it's gonna happen.
Dr. Jon 33:50
If it's fully seated, it's really difficult to it's not difficult to process, I guess it just can produce issues downstream, because the seeds typically are all ground up, they have lots of oil content to them, and your processor is going to have to deal with that downstream when when they look at your material if they are taking out one hand and one hand a seed that that definitely crop up just because it's going to cause problems downstream. Um, some of the things that we've observed is unable you know with with that is if you have two crops, you bring it all the way through to isolate and you're not able to get the securities either with a with a crop that has all that seed has all that oil in there. So somehow the you know, those oils and stuff will precipitate out and maybe you only hit 97% pure instead of 90 or something. There's other stuff in there that's in the seed oil that is either volatile and extracting and it makes it through the whole process.
Randall Thompson 34:42
So the key is to just pull the males out of your system out of your, your grow where you are, right but you still might be close to an industrial right?
Dr. Jon 34:51
Yeah, so if you have a neighbor or something like that, there's someone who is basically you know, growing industrial hemp for a driver, this 50% males, you know, Approximately so you're gonna have tons of pollen in the air so that's why you know if you have you know if you if you have an outdoor marijuana grow you know you do not want to be anywhere near a you know kind of an industrial hemp grow because that will destroy your crop so well you guys you guys know all that but anyway so there's the shucking barking and the drawing so we talked about the you know the advanced criteria advanced Secrets of the world for criteria for evaluating your processor. Um, you know, we kind of skipped over harvest we talked about drying talked about checking in binary and talk about just slightly about packaging, and then we'll go into expectations super sack, there's super sack, it's not that hard, but that's typically how people do it.
Randall Thompson 35:41
How much do those typically, weigh?
Dr. Jon 35:42
what was that?
Randall Thompson 35:43
How much those typically weigh?
Dr. Jon 35:44
Um, well, it depends on the bulk density. So if you have buds is gonna be a lot less than half powder catch, right? So it would bend on that so they can be anywhere from hundred like 100 pounds to two 300 pounds something like that they're not there, you know, typically a long line but um, so setting expectations let's let's quickly delve into that how to manage your expectations, a couple different lines of thought here. And it has to do with what you believe that oil content of your crop right and there are you just got to have the right okay, that that's all I'm saying here. So if you rely if you tell the state, Hey, come on out, look at my crop, I'm going to go harvest, they're going to come back, they're going to give you an official report that says okay, you have 15% CBD, and less than point 3% Delta nine, you're good to go, here's your here's your comms fit for commerce cert, Okay, that 15% is not what you're going to be getting out of your crop, it's not because you're gonna obviously you're gonna, you're gonna take all the buds off, okay, you're or you're gonna maybe not take the buds off, you got sticks and stems that still are going to be in there that are drying up. So it's going to be diluted down. Okay. And so probably the best way to go about this that I have seen is you can't don't cherry pick your crop Hmm, you know, take your shucknbuck material, which is that nice, nice material in randomly select, don't randomly select from each bag that you have. So you can there are tools to this like a core, it's just a to stick down you just you know, jab it into the bag, it gives you a poor what's in there, and you put that into a bucket. And then you take all the buckets from all the bags, you have put them all together into one bucket. Yeah, all the samples into one bucket, shake it up, and then that's and then they and then you send it off in the laboratory to homogenize it, they're going to Module sample as one law, and then they're going to get you enough, right. And that's probably the the best way, you're not the purpose of that is not to game, you the purpose. The purpose of that is to make sure that you know everything about your material so that you have the right expectation. And you can set that right expectation with everybody around like your workers, you'd have like a crop share going on your investors, stuff like that. So once you get it to your processor, and you say hey, here's what I did, here's the here's the results from it, they're gonna be like, wow, we like this guy, you know, he's not giving us here's the fit for commerce certificate saying this is this is what I think it is. Because anybody who does that, if that's not what it's always going to be less than what they say it is because you're going to be harvesting, you're going to be diluting that's so so homogenized your shucknbuck find out from the processor what the yield might be once you have those results, they should be able to tell you Okay, well with that material so on and so forth.
Randall Thompson 36:30
okay, go go. This many pounds, this is what you're going to do depending your oil or distillate
Dr. Jon 38:17
some material the processor for testing and then find out more about pull market this is basically just doing your homework. So you know, for example, you don't want to be the guy who thought that he could have sold his his materials for $5,000 a kilo was actually only $1,000. And you know, then you're trying to find someone
Randall Thompson 38:34
and the market change. It's a commodity. So the markets fluctuate almost daily, right? So you got to watch it carefully and and figure out how you can differentiate get the highest yield, right? And the highest price for the yield predict, right?
Dr. Jon 38:46
So if you've done this, if you estimate the old if you've done all the modernization, get your sample back, then you can go to our website, and you can look at some of the calculators
Randall Thompson 38:55
extraktLAB.com/calculators
Dr. Jon 38:58
Yeah, and you can you can select a yield calculator, there are assumptions in there based on the process, okay, but it's just a good rule of thumb, you know, for given yields and what you would what you would normally expect. You can go to other processors and you can say, Hey, here's what these guys you know, go back and forth against extraktLAB not processing material is just a benchmark. Yeah,
Randall Thompson 39:18
it's just a benchmark is going to give you acreage how many plants typically you're putting per acre and then how much yield you're going to get per acre, right, right, essentially.
Dr. Jon 39:27
So go to the go to the extract lab, look at the calculators, it's going to help you, you know, kind of understand what it is that you know what the yields might be. But make sure you follow this. It's just not fair to go pick off a couple buds and on one side of the acreage and then and then say hey, here's what it is. It's 30% material and you deliver a 5% material that actually happens quite a bit and then trying to take your expectation out on the processor that you probably don't want to bet so this is also top five facts you need to know about testing cannabis or hemp or CBD. You know, the rules will vary state to State talking specifically about manufacturers here. But um, you know, when you have to get your crop tested who tests the crop? It all depends on the state. Okay, so like I had already mentioned in Oregon, you self certify, and in like a lot of the other places like Minnesota, New York or whatever you have, you have to send it in or you have to have a official come out, they do the sample, get you the sample back and the certificate. So the self certification is nice, but I can see it can be a trap who, you know, like, you know, okay, I'm self certifying, right, and I go, and I, you know, kind of put my finger on the scale a little bit in my favor, and then I try to ship it right, like, Okay, and then it has more than point 3% Delta nine, and you're going to get in trouble. So that's it. So, um, problems with the test results. So there can be problems with the test results. Those are well known. Um, I have other podcasts, you can go back and look about all about testing.
Randall Thompson 40:51
Yes.
Dr. Jon 40:51
And we go into each of these areas in detail. So yeah, there have been lots of problems in the testing world. It has to do with some some of the people have, you know, are doing other kinds of tests. And then they add on a test that for cannabis that's not validated so that you just want to make sure that you have a valid test that you're working with it. And these three, I'm just going to skip, but just suffice it to say that just because you get a past designation, or like pesticide, for example, doesn't mean the products are pure. Okay. And the rules for how much pesticides are allowed vary from state to state. So that has led
Randall Thompson 41:28
And the number of pesticides they test for is different
Dr. Jon 41:31
exactly, yeah, exactly. So that is led to basically people shopping around for tests at different state and then they got here's here, this I missed, ultimately, you're going to have pick a state. Okay, so we have done Florida, for our testing. California is also good, but they have them they have a pretty comprehensive list of pesticide and then Canada is
Randall Thompson 41:51
Canada's is
Dr. Jon 41:52
Out of the world.
Randall Thompson 41:52
It's awesome. They I mean, they test for everything. It's crazy. Oh, I think 97 for pesticides
Dr. Jon 41:57
Yeah, it's a lot. So it's pretty good and other you know, toxins and all that. Heavy metals. Yep, yep. So I'm gonna skip over the rest of these but just just just some just some top things that you need to know Okay, why our co2 oils our clinical grade I have to get this in obviously go Yeah, okay. Yeah, we if you pick a pick a processor that that does co2, you're really avoiding the risk of having chemicals. So that's number one. Um,
Randall Thompson 42:20
we that too many times. Yeah,
Dr. Jon 42:22
you go back and look at all of our podcasts on that it No, we have an axe to grind and it's no it's No,
Randall Thompson 42:28
no, it's because it's, it's rude. It isn't. It's not something that we're trying to support anything we do. It's just this these are the facts.
Dr. Jon 42:34
Yeah, so Yeah, exactly. It's just like we we have lots of stuff on this our position is out there you know, whatever it is, okay. co2 oils are easy to formulate in safe, stable water, stable water soluble oil powder formulation. So import. co2 oils may be us certified 100% organic products and co2 oils can be [unintelligible] are that has a lot to do with terpene preservation is like that. All right, I think that we have reached the end all except for transportation, and then how to drive your processor crazy. I'll go through this real quick. Okay. Um, in terms of transportation, you need a fit for commerce certificate, we just discussed that. Who does this test, there's an issue whether it's the farmer state doc talked about that also, with transportation, you're going to have to have your gross certificate or your your farmer certificate for hemp, you don't want to put that with the documentation and the processors certificate, who you're sending it to, and the certificate of analysis, you're gonna want to have that all there in the documentation so that if anything happens, you have all your docs, here it is now and along with numbers, you know, the processor certificate, a lot of times the processor will say, Okay, if there's any problem, call this number and call us and you can tell me if this is our is there,
Randall Thompson 43:44
that'll get you across every just about every state of Idaho. Yeah, so don't worry.
Dr. Jon 43:49
All right, and then how to drive your processor. Great. Whoo, this is kind of everything that we just talked about. But in deliverables yet deliver moldy material deliver material that has been extracted already, sticks, and stems and seed, you know, metal and for matter, and debris and biomass, have wild expectations, unrealistic timing, expectations for processing. Like I learned about talking about that, and then trying to fix that business expectations through the processor. Yeah, like, okay, you know, like, Okay, I have built this all up with everybody around me that we're gonna millionaires, and now it's all evolved. Yeah.
Randall Thompson 44:23
Or I have promised to get it to you in you know, three, you know, from biomass to isolate, you know, 100,000 pounds in three days.
Dr. Jon 44:31
Yeah. If you if you want that in if you want that, then that has to be contractual. Yeah. So put it in your contract, you know, so, if you say, okay, hey, look, I want this done in three days. Well, then you put that in your contract. Yeah, that's it. All right. So that is that's the bottom line, guys. I hope. I hope that was helpful.
Randall Thompson 44:48
This was this was awesome.
Dr. Jon 44:49
Yeah.
Randall Thompson 44:49
Well done.
Dr. Jon 44:50
thanks.
Randall Thompson 44:50
I like I like that. And you know, I didn't really see any table.
Dr. Jon 44:54
Right.
Randall Thompson 44:54
Good job. That was that was nice.
Dr. Jon 44:56
All right.
Randall Thompson 44:57
