00:00:30.269 --> 00:00:30.589
Great.
00:00:30.750 --> 00:00:31.550
I'm gonna laugh.
00:00:31.710 --> 00:00:39.070
I'm gonna smile, and I'm gonna love every second of it because the last thing I'm gonna do is like take the game for granted again.
00:00:39.230 --> 00:00:47.790
And that's kind of the same mentality that I told myself I would carry with me even now and like would not lose that perspective just because I'm playing again.
00:00:51.630 --> 00:00:56.269
Hey y'all, welcome back to the Everything Orange podcast presented by First Horizon Bank.
00:00:56.510 --> 00:01:04.430
Tennessee soccer is off to a fantastic start, sitting at 6-0 and 1 this season with contributions across the field.
00:01:04.590 --> 00:01:11.950
But one of the best stories that has come out of this team is about someone who's waited so long to get back out onto the field.
00:01:12.189 --> 00:01:14.750
683 days to be exact.
00:01:14.909 --> 00:01:25.150
And she's here in the podcast studio with us today to talk all about her journey both on and off the field that led to a remarkable moment to kick off her fifth year.
00:01:25.310 --> 00:01:29.069
So please welcome to the Everything Orange Podcast, Kylie Simmons.
00:01:29.390 --> 00:01:31.950
Kylie Simmons, welcome to the Everything Orange Podcast.
00:01:32.189 --> 00:01:33.629
Hi, thank you so much for having me.
00:01:33.789 --> 00:01:34.909
We're so excited to have you on.
00:01:34.989 --> 00:01:38.430
It's crazy that like we're already off and running with the soccer season.
00:01:38.590 --> 00:01:43.710
It feels like it was just summer like two seconds ago, but no, you guys have been well into your soccer season at this point.
00:01:43.870 --> 00:01:48.750
Do you feel like everything has just been moving a hundred miles per hour since the season started for you?
00:01:48.989 --> 00:01:49.390
100%.
00:01:49.870 --> 00:01:55.710
I always tell myself that I'm going to not let it go by fast and it somehow like slips away every single year.
00:01:55.870 --> 00:01:57.469
And this year is not any different.
00:01:57.710 --> 00:01:57.950
Right.
00:01:58.109 --> 00:02:02.670
Especially after your journey and all that you've been through, like you want to cherish this fifth year.
00:02:02.750 --> 00:02:14.590
So speaking of, I really want to talk and start off with your journey through your collegiate soccer career because it it is one that hits all the buckets in terms of adversity and the comeback.
00:02:14.909 --> 00:02:22.189
And I don't know that everyone truly knows it because you were a new face for us before we even got to really see you play.
00:02:22.349 --> 00:02:30.269
Because the last time you played in a soccer match was 683 days prior to the first match of this regular season.
00:02:30.590 --> 00:02:38.189
When I say that, does it really sink in how long it was of a process of a journey to get back out onto the field?
00:02:38.430 --> 00:02:39.949
I think yes and no.
00:02:40.349 --> 00:02:42.909
Um especially last year.
00:02:43.229 --> 00:02:46.030
Definitely had moments where it felt super long.
00:02:46.430 --> 00:02:50.909
But then I also look back now and I'm like, I can't believe that was a year ago.
00:02:50.990 --> 00:02:53.229
And it also goes by fast at the same time.
00:02:53.469 --> 00:03:00.110
I think the whole journey of college soccer in itself is more amazing to me that it's my fifth year.
00:03:00.189 --> 00:03:02.750
Like I'm like, oh my gosh, it goes by so fast.
00:03:02.909 --> 00:03:07.469
So I think that above anything, looking back, I'm amazed of how fast the time goes.
00:03:07.710 --> 00:03:08.030
Absolutely.
00:03:08.110 --> 00:03:11.150
Yeah, you snap and it's like, man, I was just a freshman.
00:03:11.469 --> 00:03:13.789
Like, how where has the time gone with all of it?
00:03:13.949 --> 00:03:15.550
So take me back to your junior year.
00:03:15.629 --> 00:03:18.349
You were at Missouri, and that's when you experienced your first injury.
00:03:18.590 --> 00:03:25.069
What do you remember about going through the early stages of wanting to get back out onto the field?
00:03:25.390 --> 00:03:30.110
My last collegiate game before that was against Florida, and it was at the end of September.
00:03:30.189 --> 00:03:33.069
So I guess coming up on that like two-year date or whatever.
00:03:33.150 --> 00:03:49.789
Um, and it was the practice after that, and I had just felt a pop up in my quad kind of near my hip flexor, um, after trying to serve a ball into the box um with my left foot, which is something I do now and kind of shows, and it's something I do every day.
00:03:49.870 --> 00:03:54.830
Like the um two assists that I have this year are the exact same ball that I tried to hit that same day.
00:03:54.990 --> 00:03:56.990
So it wasn't a new movement at all.
00:03:57.229 --> 00:03:57.550
Okay.
00:03:57.710 --> 00:03:59.629
Um, and I just collapsed.
00:03:59.710 --> 00:04:06.509
It honestly was probably one of the most painful moments, I would argue, even more painful than tearing my ACL.
00:04:06.590 --> 00:04:16.430
Um, I had never had a soft tissue injury before, so I was really scared and uncertain and confused because it was a mechanism that wasn't familiar to me.
00:04:16.590 --> 00:04:16.909
Right.
00:04:17.149 --> 00:04:19.550
And so didn't really know how to proceed after that.
00:04:19.789 --> 00:04:24.509
And we had Tennessee coming up two days, three days later, or something like that.
00:04:24.669 --> 00:04:36.990
So my coaches were really eager trying to get me to play for that, and I was trying to push through it, trying to be able to play in that game because it was really important for me to be there and I wanted to be there for my team.
00:04:37.149 --> 00:04:39.310
And I couldn't go to class, I couldn't walk.
00:04:39.389 --> 00:04:47.389
And so those initial days were really frustrating because something that I had assumed was going to be just a mild strain.
00:04:47.870 --> 00:04:49.950
I quickly realized it wasn't that.
00:04:50.190 --> 00:05:03.070
And I had ended up partially tearing that muscle in the top of my quad and tried to get back every week, every game I was trying to play the next one, and it ended up not working out.
00:05:03.149 --> 00:05:07.549
And so I kind of ended my junior season not stepping on the field again.
00:05:08.029 --> 00:05:12.830
It almost sounds like you thought you were taking a step forward, but in reality it was just pushing you three steps back.
00:05:12.909 --> 00:05:16.029
Like you could never get to where you wanted to be.
00:05:16.110 --> 00:05:20.350
And like you said, week after week, that's a really frustrating experience to have.
00:05:20.830 --> 00:05:21.230
100%.
00:05:21.710 --> 00:05:25.789
It was the uncertainty of that, I think, was the most frustrating.
00:05:26.350 --> 00:05:35.230
Um because kind of like you said, every week I was trying to practice, I was trying to get back, and it would be okay, this next game is when I'm gonna be back, this next game, this next game.
00:05:35.389 --> 00:05:52.590
And so I never really had an answer, um, which uh in turn did kind of take me three steps back because I would pop my quad again, and then what ended up maybe would have been a four-week injury recovery if I would have just completely taken rest off, ended up being closer to like two months.
00:05:52.909 --> 00:06:11.230
So when you did decide to enter the transfer portal, how were you feeling about the options that you thought you were going to have, considering you didn't get to play the back half of the season, and it kind of maybe put you in a place of limbo as to like, I don't really know how this is going to go, me entering the portal.
00:06:11.629 --> 00:06:12.269
Hundred percent.
00:06:12.509 --> 00:06:19.549
Um, I actually entered that first day of the portal, not in it, because I was going back and forth.
00:06:19.710 --> 00:06:22.509
I hadn't really had my mind made up.
00:06:22.750 --> 00:06:27.870
My parents, they were of incredible support, but they couldn't give me an answer.
00:06:28.190 --> 00:06:32.990
And this was something for the first time that I had to make the decision completely on my own.
00:06:33.470 --> 00:06:36.190
And so I was really back and forth, uncertain.
00:06:36.350 --> 00:06:42.190
And when I woke up that morning with the transfer portal being open, I just was sick to my stomach.
00:06:42.269 --> 00:06:43.629
And I was like, that's my sign.
00:06:43.789 --> 00:06:46.269
As soon as it tomorrow hits, I'm going in.
00:06:46.509 --> 00:06:48.269
I was like, I can't wait any longer.
00:06:48.590 --> 00:06:54.590
I knew that I made the wrong decision when I wasn't in it, and I kind of just went with my gut and went with my heart in that.
00:06:54.669 --> 00:06:58.909
Of course, I was uncertain, but I just had a feeling that it was what I needed to do.
00:06:59.070 --> 00:07:00.269
So that next day I was in it.
00:07:00.509 --> 00:07:03.070
So you took the leap of faith and you put your name in the portal.
00:07:03.389 --> 00:07:12.429
At what point did you connect with Tennessee and what were your initial thoughts and feelings towards the coaching staff, the program, and potentially becoming a lady vol?
00:07:12.830 --> 00:07:16.429
Yeah, so John's text was actually one of the first ones in my phone.
00:07:16.669 --> 00:07:21.470
Um, it took about like maybe 15 minutes after I was in the portal.
00:07:21.549 --> 00:07:30.669
I was actually driving home from telling my coaches and like getting into the portal, and I'm like checking my phone as I'm pulling into my house and I'm like, oh my gosh, like all the text kind of start flooding in.
00:07:30.750 --> 00:07:33.470
And John was one of the first ones, if not the first.
00:07:33.629 --> 00:07:36.429
I can't quite remember, but I know it was pretty early.
00:07:36.590 --> 00:07:43.389
Um, and initially I had thought that I would get a fresh start by changing conferences.
00:07:43.629 --> 00:07:48.990
I was initially like looking at the Big Ten is kind of where I thought I was going to go going into the portal.
00:07:49.070 --> 00:07:49.230
Okay.
00:07:49.389 --> 00:07:56.509
Not that I had anything against the SEC, but I kind of, of course, not clearly, but I kind of took it as this was going to be my fresh start.
00:07:56.669 --> 00:07:59.070
And so I looked at Big Ten schools first.
00:07:59.309 --> 00:08:06.110
And Tennessee, of course, was on my radar with just being a phenomenal soccer school school historically.
00:08:06.269 --> 00:08:14.590
That was my number one priority was choosing soccer and choosing a program that I know would bring the best out of me.
00:08:14.830 --> 00:08:33.629
So when you continued to go throughout the process and you decided to land on Tennessee when you got here, what was what was the experience of continuing to rehab, getting adjusted to college life here, meeting the team, meeting the girls, and what were you feeling about this new kind of journey that you're about to go on?
00:08:33.950 --> 00:08:42.909
I think the first week, weekend that I was there, one of my teammates had made a comment to me and they were like, It really feels like you had never not been here.
00:08:43.230 --> 00:08:44.990
And that's exactly how I felt too.
00:08:45.070 --> 00:09:01.789
I think stepping into campus on my visit with the coaches, I genuinely feel like I bleed orange, and I don't feel like a transfer, as I know that kind of sounds cliche, but like I truly found my home here, and the team made it feel exactly like that.
00:09:01.870 --> 00:09:06.350
They're telling me stories about what happened before I was here, and they're like, wait, you don't remember that?
00:09:06.429 --> 00:09:07.870
I'm like, No, I don't remember that.
00:09:07.949 --> 00:09:08.669
I wasn't here.
00:09:08.829 --> 00:09:10.269
I I guys, I just got here.
00:09:10.350 --> 00:09:10.589
Yeah.
00:09:10.829 --> 00:09:13.389
Um, and that spring was awesome.
00:09:13.709 --> 00:09:18.110
I had taken that winter to really rehab my quad.
00:09:18.189 --> 00:09:22.269
So when I got here in the spring, I was pretty much back, like full go.
00:09:22.429 --> 00:09:27.629
I was obviously in communication with Greg and we were on the same page with a lot of stuff, my athletic trainer.
00:09:27.949 --> 00:09:31.149
Um, but I was playing pretty much right away and was feeling really good.
00:09:31.389 --> 00:09:34.110
And I think that we talked about this a little bit before we started.
00:09:34.189 --> 00:09:52.029
That was kind of when you look back and think of the, you know, almost 700 days that you weren't playing soccer, that's kind of the confusing part because you were for a little bit, because you were healthy and ready to go at the springtime, and you had even played in the exhibition match um against Clemson here at home.
00:09:52.509 --> 00:09:55.949
And things like kind of all hit at once.
00:09:56.189 --> 00:09:56.990
Yeah, definitely.
00:09:57.230 --> 00:09:57.470
Yeah.
00:09:57.629 --> 00:10:02.189
I had spent the whole spring healthy and my excitement grew from there.
00:10:02.350 --> 00:10:10.990
I we played Carolina, we played Clemson again that first spring, we played uh Virginia, Virginia Tech.
00:10:11.069 --> 00:10:15.069
We spent that spring really building a great thing, and I'd played all those matches.
00:10:15.230 --> 00:10:17.230
So at that point I didn't feel new.
00:10:17.309 --> 00:10:27.789
I felt like I had built the rapport and the relationship with my teammates, ready to finally have the senior season that I had felt like I was building up to.
00:10:28.269 --> 00:10:29.870
And summer was great as well.
00:10:29.949 --> 00:10:35.470
And yeah, that um second exhibition at home is kind of where everything fell apart, I guess.
00:10:36.029 --> 00:10:47.470
So, what do you remember about what what you were doing on the field in that moment, what you felt, and also the immediate reaction of holy cow, am I really going through all of this again?
00:10:47.949 --> 00:10:51.629
Yeah, um, I wasn't even sprinting.
00:10:51.789 --> 00:11:00.589
I was probably on a fast jog going to defend a player in the wide space, something we literally are expected to do all the time throughout a match.
00:11:00.750 --> 00:11:06.669
It is not an awkward side tackle, it's not a weird cut, it's not even full speed.
00:11:06.909 --> 00:11:16.589
And I just remember going to step and turn and just feeling that pop, it's like unexplainable to someone who hasn't gone through it.
00:11:16.829 --> 00:11:21.149
I know everyone here, if they have done it, they know exactly what it feels like.
00:11:21.389 --> 00:11:26.669
And given the fact that I had done it before, I knew instantly.
00:11:27.230 --> 00:11:33.709
Um, I remember thinking, okay, if I look down and my knee's not dislocated, I know I tore my ACL.
00:11:33.870 --> 00:11:38.429
Because it feels almost like you dislocate your knee from the inside, is kind of how I explain it.
00:11:38.589 --> 00:11:38.909
Okay.
00:11:39.069 --> 00:11:41.549
And I look down and I'm like, yeah, this is it.
00:11:41.789 --> 00:11:47.149
And I remember my teammates coming up to me, and Allie Brown was like, Are you okay?
00:11:47.230 --> 00:11:48.589
And I'm like, I tore my ACL.
00:11:48.750 --> 00:11:49.870
And she's like, you don't know that.
00:11:49.949 --> 00:11:51.309
Like she's trying to be reassuring.
00:11:51.389 --> 00:11:53.389
You know, a teammate, like, don't think the worst.
00:11:53.549 --> 00:11:59.870
And I was like, I know you're trying to help right now, but I I'm not saying it as worst case, I'm stating a fact.
00:11:59.949 --> 00:12:01.549
Like, I know I tore my ACL.
00:12:01.789 --> 00:12:04.750
So kind of like, don't say that to me right now, kind of thing.
00:12:04.909 --> 00:12:08.829
And that's Greg had come on the field and I was like, don't touch me.
00:12:08.909 --> 00:12:14.750
I just tore my ACL, just help me get off, is kind of all I said to him, and we walked off.
00:12:15.069 --> 00:12:30.029
Was that emotional experience and the weeks and months that followed it similar to the first injury or different in a good or a better or a worse way, knowing that you had gone through this path before?
00:12:30.429 --> 00:12:33.549
Um, similar to the quad injury, no.
00:12:33.870 --> 00:12:48.429
Similar to my first ACL, there were some similarities, but also I think I was so naive in that journey where I look at them as completely different, even though they were similar injuries from an anatomical standpoint.
00:12:48.589 --> 00:12:48.909
Yeah.
00:12:49.149 --> 00:12:59.709
Um I I would say it wasn't emotional really until I had the surgery and then like realized what I was going through again.
00:12:59.870 --> 00:13:01.470
I think is when it like fully hit me.
00:13:01.789 --> 00:13:16.269
In that moment, well, I guess I read that article and you had reflected back, and part of I guess your maybe grief process of it all was you were you were saying, I just wish wish I could miss the goal again.
00:13:16.350 --> 00:13:16.829
Oh, yeah.
00:13:17.069 --> 00:13:31.389
It was a quote that really stood out to me because I feel like that's such an interesting perspective to have as an athlete where you were like, I don't even like, I just want to stand there and be able to kick the ball and have have it miss the goal because that means that I have gotten to the other side of it.
00:13:31.549 --> 00:13:33.230
So talk to me about that perspective that you had.
00:13:33.470 --> 00:13:33.789
Yeah.
00:13:33.949 --> 00:13:37.709
Um, I mean, I think as any athlete, you want to succeed in your role.
00:13:37.870 --> 00:13:48.350
And as a forward, obviously, my role is to create chances, score goals, assist, and be in that goal scoring process.
00:13:48.509 --> 00:13:55.389
And I think up until my injury, a lot of us will hold our heads pretty low if we miss those chances.
00:13:55.549 --> 00:14:07.709
I mean, it's hard mentally to kind of get past a goal that you wish you would have scored or should have scored, anything like that is something that I think separates a good forward between a great forward, is how they're able to move past that.
00:14:08.029 --> 00:14:12.909
And I remember going into the SEC tournament.
00:14:13.149 --> 00:14:20.029
One of my teammates last year was kind of getting in her head about that very thing, not scoring, missing, that type of thing.
00:14:20.189 --> 00:14:29.309
And I just, I don't know what hit me, but I like looked at her and I was like, I would give anything to miss an open goal right now.
00:14:29.549 --> 00:14:32.269
And that was a perspective I had never had.
00:14:32.509 --> 00:14:35.149
But in that moment, I was like, I would love to miss.
00:14:35.309 --> 00:14:37.949
Give me an open net in a game.
00:14:38.350 --> 00:14:39.069
Love to miss.
00:14:39.149 --> 00:14:40.990
I'm not even thinking about making it right now.
00:14:41.149 --> 00:14:43.949
I'm thinking about, yeah, give me on, get me on the field.
00:14:44.110 --> 00:14:45.949
If that means I miss, great.
00:14:46.110 --> 00:14:54.589
I'm gonna laugh, I'm gonna smile, and I'm gonna love every second of it because the last thing I'm gonna do is like take the game for granted again.
00:14:55.149 --> 00:15:03.629
Um, and that's kind of the same mentality that I told myself I would carry with me even now, and like would not lose that perspective just because I'm playing again.
00:15:03.949 --> 00:15:17.549
To be able to have that perspective on the sideline to still bring a positive energy to the group, even have your parents continually come down from Ohio to support you, even though you weren't able to be playing in a game.
00:15:17.789 --> 00:15:20.750
What did that do for your personal morale?
00:15:20.829 --> 00:15:25.309
And then in turn help the team out by having like a light on the bench.
00:15:25.549 --> 00:15:25.870
Yeah.
00:15:26.110 --> 00:15:31.789
Um I actually told Joe this last year, kind of towards the end of the season.
00:15:31.870 --> 00:15:38.429
I don't remember what we were talking about, but I kind of made a comment and was like, this year was still one of my favorite college soccer seasons.
00:15:38.509 --> 00:15:39.629
And he's like, What?
00:15:39.789 --> 00:15:40.669
Like, you're insane.
00:15:40.829 --> 00:15:48.110
And I'm like, no, the perspective that it gave me, I was so like die hard for this team, like Tennessee, this program.
00:15:48.589 --> 00:15:50.909
At some point, it became a reality.
00:15:50.990 --> 00:15:52.589
I knew I wasn't stepping on the field.
00:15:52.750 --> 00:15:53.709
So what could I do?
00:15:53.870 --> 00:15:54.990
What could I control?
00:15:55.149 --> 00:15:56.509
Because it wasn't being able to play.
00:15:56.669 --> 00:15:57.470
I couldn't control that.
00:15:57.549 --> 00:15:58.029
It was done.
00:15:58.269 --> 00:16:01.629
At some point, I went through the grief journey and I had to move on.
00:16:02.110 --> 00:16:11.230
And that became being the best teammate I could possibly be because I loved being a part of this team last year, and of course this year.
00:16:11.470 --> 00:16:18.110
But seeing my teammates win and compete and doing anything I could to support them was all I could do.
00:16:18.189 --> 00:16:21.470
And so I decided to just put all of my energy into that.
00:16:21.789 --> 00:16:30.669
So fast forward through the end of the season, you're still working on coming back, getting healthier, getting stronger, and you run a half marathon.
00:16:30.829 --> 00:16:32.669
Where did this idea come from?
00:16:32.990 --> 00:16:37.789
Yeah, so I am like a distance runner at heart.
00:16:37.870 --> 00:16:40.990
It's something that after soccer, I'm excited to be able to continue.
00:16:41.069 --> 00:16:42.110
I love running.
00:16:42.350 --> 00:16:44.669
And I did, I did it last year.
00:16:44.829 --> 00:16:45.069
Okay.
00:16:45.230 --> 00:16:50.350
And I'm from Cincinnati, so I do did the flying pig half marathon, which with my friends.
00:16:50.429 --> 00:16:53.389
It's a pretty big event um in Cincinnati, and it's really, really fun.
00:16:53.549 --> 00:16:55.230
And so I did it last year for the first time.
00:16:55.470 --> 00:16:55.789
Okay.
00:16:56.110 --> 00:17:03.629
And I remember um like when I went through the rehab process, I was like, wait, I don't know if I'm gonna be able to run that.
00:17:03.789 --> 00:17:10.589
It was a question I was right at eight months post-op, I think, at that at that point when the half marathon would be.
00:17:10.670 --> 00:17:10.910
Okay.
00:17:11.150 --> 00:17:20.350
And I kind of got closer to it, and I had asked, you know, Greg and the and the coaches as well, I was like, is this something that I could possibly do?
00:17:20.589 --> 00:17:22.670
Because I really wanted to do it again.
00:17:22.829 --> 00:17:24.990
And they're like, you know, we don't know.
00:17:25.230 --> 00:17:31.150
And Joe had said, well, as long as it's after the spring season and soccer's done, he's like, I'm I'm okay with it.
00:17:31.230 --> 00:17:34.190
Like as long as Greg and Sam are also okay with it.
00:17:34.430 --> 00:17:41.470
So at that point, coming back in January, um, that was kind of my big event at the end of the spring that I was looking forward to.
00:17:41.629 --> 00:17:48.109
Um, at that point, the coaches and I had had a conversation about just not playing any any spring games.
00:17:48.349 --> 00:17:50.750
I was able to incorporate myself back into practice.
00:17:50.829 --> 00:17:56.670
So I was playing with my team in the spring, but just not playing games because it wasn't really worth it at that point.
00:17:56.750 --> 00:17:59.069
Um, give my body more time to heal.
00:17:59.789 --> 00:18:06.910
And so this non-contact event of running this half marathon was my SEC championship, my Super Bowl, if you will.
00:18:07.149 --> 00:18:14.349
And I had taken that entire spring running, getting myself so fit just to kind of see where my body could go.
00:18:14.509 --> 00:18:22.430
And I ended up running that half marathon in May, and I did it in like an hour and 44 minutes or something.
00:18:22.589 --> 00:18:25.549
It was like a 750 pace the whole time.
00:18:25.789 --> 00:18:33.710
And it was like the fastest, like longest distance I've ever done, and took off like almost 20 minutes of my first time that I did last year, too.
00:18:33.789 --> 00:18:35.789
So Golly, that's insane.
00:18:36.029 --> 00:18:41.470
Oh my gosh, I didn't know your time on top of the fact that you dropped like 20 minutes off of it.
00:18:41.710 --> 00:18:42.670
Yeah, that's crazy.
00:18:42.829 --> 00:18:46.269
Having run a half marathon myself, like I give you all the credit in the world.
00:18:46.349 --> 00:18:47.869
That is so impressive.
00:18:48.190 --> 00:18:57.389
How proud were you though of yourself, of your body to see your strength on display that you were able to do something like that, given everything you had been through?
00:18:57.629 --> 00:19:01.950
Oh, yeah, I was totally on cloud nine, uh runner's high for sure.
00:19:02.109 --> 00:19:03.950
Like it wasn't even difficult.
00:19:04.109 --> 00:19:10.349
Like my body was in such a like fit space, and that's all credit to Greg and Sam and the coaching staff.
00:19:10.430 --> 00:19:15.549
Like they did so much for me over the spring, and I just did it every single day.
00:19:15.710 --> 00:19:19.789
I think I said like just paying dividends, and it eventually pays off.
00:19:19.869 --> 00:19:29.950
Like, even though you don't might not see it, that I think was the epitome of being able to see what I had done all spring finally kind of come to light, even if it meant not playing soccer yet.
00:19:30.109 --> 00:19:30.589
Right, right.
00:19:30.670 --> 00:19:31.470
But that was to come.
00:19:31.629 --> 00:19:31.789
Yes.
00:19:31.950 --> 00:19:32.269
Yes.
00:19:32.430 --> 00:19:38.029
Um, but I do have to ask before we change gears, are you looking at running a marathon at any point?
00:19:38.109 --> 00:19:40.829
Is that like on your radar in the near future after soccer?
00:19:41.069 --> 00:19:41.789
100%.
00:19:42.269 --> 00:19:47.149
I have I got into kind of longer distance running because my boyfriend is also a long distance runner.
00:19:47.309 --> 00:19:49.389
So we did like the half marathons together.
00:19:49.549 --> 00:19:55.470
Um, and 100% he is like not wanting to do that, and I'm like, you have to do one with me, like just one.
00:19:55.549 --> 00:19:59.149
Like so that's definitely something I would love to do.
00:19:59.309 --> 00:20:02.670
I also think once you do a half, I do believe you can do a full.
00:20:02.829 --> 00:20:06.670
Like at that point, the last like half of the full is mental, I think.
00:20:06.990 --> 00:20:07.710
That's a good point.
00:20:07.950 --> 00:20:11.629
Is there a location that you're looking at that you want to do your first marathon?
00:20:11.869 --> 00:20:14.829
I definitely think I would love to do the flying pig one.
00:20:15.069 --> 00:20:19.309
I don't know if that would want to be my first because I do love the thought of traveling for it.
00:20:19.470 --> 00:20:23.069
Like the one in San Diego is really um appealing to me.
00:20:23.309 --> 00:20:25.710
And the one in Cincinnati is so hilly.
00:20:25.869 --> 00:20:28.109
Like it is an awful like terrain.
00:20:28.190 --> 00:20:28.349
Yeah.
00:20:28.589 --> 00:20:33.149
So maybe doing one that's flat for my first would maybe give confidence.
00:20:33.389 --> 00:20:38.430
Yeah, and I think the travel part of looking at the different locations you can do a marathon is like the reward of it.
00:20:38.509 --> 00:20:40.029
Like it worked so hard.
00:20:40.109 --> 00:20:41.230
Like, let's make a little trip out of it.
00:20:41.470 --> 00:20:42.109
It can be fun.
00:20:42.349 --> 00:20:46.990
I was delusional when I was looking at the Hawaii one for this year, and then grad school got in the way.
00:20:47.069 --> 00:20:48.269
So we're not doing that.
00:20:48.430 --> 00:20:50.509
But that was a flat one too that I was like, okay.
00:20:50.910 --> 00:20:52.029
Definitely put that on your bucket list.
00:20:52.190 --> 00:20:55.149
Yes, it'll it'll go, it'll live there for now for the time being.
00:20:55.389 --> 00:21:01.710
Um, okay, so now we get to August 13th, the first regular season match against Wreckers.
00:21:02.029 --> 00:21:07.710
You're finally about to step on the field 683 days after playing your last match.
00:21:07.869 --> 00:21:08.750
What are you thinking?
00:21:08.829 --> 00:21:09.710
What are you feeling?
00:21:09.869 --> 00:21:13.710
Is that reality what you're actually thinking of in that moment?
00:21:13.869 --> 00:21:17.149
Or are you kind of focused on the right here right now of the game ahead?
00:21:17.389 --> 00:21:18.670
Definitely the right here right now.
00:21:18.750 --> 00:21:18.829
Okay.
00:21:18.990 --> 00:21:22.269
I would say, like, am I thinking about how long it's been since I stepped on the field?
00:21:22.509 --> 00:21:23.389
Absolutely not.
00:21:23.549 --> 00:21:26.349
I no, not even on my radar at all.
00:21:26.589 --> 00:21:39.950
I think it was just a night full of gratitude, is probably the number one emotion that I would say I'm was focused on and am still focusing on.
00:21:40.430 --> 00:21:42.670
And no expectations, nothing.
00:21:42.829 --> 00:21:45.149
I just was so excited to play.
00:21:45.309 --> 00:21:45.389
Yeah.
00:21:45.629 --> 00:21:49.629
Being on Regal Soccer Stadium is just one of the best feelings in the world.
00:21:49.789 --> 00:21:54.029
And when I transferred here, I was so excited to experience that moment.
00:21:54.190 --> 00:22:05.389
And so it didn't come as soon as I thought it did, but to be on that field that night was just overwhelmingly joy, excitement, just everything that I worked in the last year.
00:22:05.470 --> 00:22:07.230
It's almost like undescribable.
00:22:07.309 --> 00:22:14.430
Like I'm kind of like trying to figure out words to say because it was just so awesome that I don't even have words to like explain how I was truly feeling in that moment.
00:22:14.750 --> 00:22:17.149
Your family was also there for that game, too.
00:22:17.309 --> 00:22:24.670
What do you remember about being able to experience the before, the during, and the after, knowing that they're just there to support you in that moment?
00:22:24.910 --> 00:22:28.750
Yeah, it's funny, they are just absolutely incredible.
00:22:28.910 --> 00:22:29.789
I mean, my parents.
00:22:30.589 --> 00:22:34.029
Have their mindset on not missing a game this year at all.
00:22:34.190 --> 00:22:35.629
Like they're they're at everything.
00:22:35.789 --> 00:22:39.869
They have their flights to Texas, they had their LSU flights booked last week.
00:22:40.029 --> 00:22:44.349
So they're they're fully on this journey with me and traveling to every game.
00:22:44.509 --> 00:22:49.789
So I think on one side of it, it felt like it did every single game.
00:22:49.869 --> 00:22:53.789
They've been at every single soccer game I have ever played in or not played in.
00:22:54.029 --> 00:22:57.069
Like that's yeah, like they so that felt normal.
00:22:57.149 --> 00:23:05.629
But then when I kind of take a step back and realize kind of what that truly means, I could not be more thankful for them.
00:23:05.869 --> 00:23:10.509
And they are the reason of why I am the way I am today.
00:23:10.829 --> 00:23:26.269
Okay, well, now I want to go into a film room session of the goals that you've scored this season because it goes hand in hand with that game in particular, which I just feel like makes the game in the moment even that much more special of like, she's back, don't you worry.
00:23:26.430 --> 00:23:31.869
This is your first goal as a Tennessee Lady Fall, which is also one that I feel like you'll remember forever because of that.
00:23:31.950 --> 00:23:34.509
So take me through it less than 10 minutes into the match.
00:23:34.670 --> 00:23:38.670
You take a shot from inside the box, and then the keeper can't quite quite get control of it.
00:23:38.750 --> 00:23:40.269
So you immediately follow that play.
00:23:40.430 --> 00:23:45.789
When the ball gets loose, though, are you thinking like, oh, I've got this easy, like getting getting there, beating her to it?
00:23:46.029 --> 00:23:46.990
Um, I think so.
00:23:47.230 --> 00:23:52.829
I think um the ball that Ava had played was phenomenal, and the goalkeeper made a great save.
00:23:52.910 --> 00:23:58.829
I think initially I was like, just get something on this, and it's going in because of how well her cross was hit.
00:23:58.990 --> 00:24:01.549
And the goalkeeper, the reaction save was great.
00:24:01.950 --> 00:24:05.069
Um, but when it came off her hands, I was like, oh yeah, I got this.
00:24:05.230 --> 00:24:07.069
Like I'm like, this is my second chance.
00:24:07.309 --> 00:24:08.349
Yes, exactly.
00:24:08.589 --> 00:24:11.629
So, yes, talk me through it from start to finish from what you see there.
00:24:11.869 --> 00:24:12.029
Okay.
00:24:12.190 --> 00:24:28.190
Like I said, I just wanted to get something on the cross and sliding into it and scoring like the first goal of the Tennessee regular season in general, as well as my first as um a Lady Vol was, like I said, kind of indescribable.
00:24:28.349 --> 00:24:31.869
I love um the reactions from Ava as well.
00:24:32.109 --> 00:24:33.389
That's awesome.
00:24:33.549 --> 00:24:37.869
I actually haven't um watched rewatched that since, so that's actually really awesome.
00:24:38.190 --> 00:24:38.990
That's so screen.
00:24:39.309 --> 00:24:53.789
Um, yeah, but I think from like a symbolic standpoint of being able to kind of get the second chance um kind of embodies what the last year was for me.
00:24:53.950 --> 00:25:06.109
Kind of that second chance of yeah, you know, 2025 was not my senior season, but this is what I did the whole last year, and like this is now my senior season, kind of and yeah, it was awesome.
00:25:06.269 --> 00:25:21.069
I think from a physical standpoint, one thing that I really loved about it was I kind of have to like slide under my left knee a little bit and almost like completely like crunch my knee to kind of get that ball because I'm fully outstretching.
00:25:21.309 --> 00:25:31.470
Um, and that's something that I was a little bit nervous about of coming back is would I be willing to play without thinking about my knee again?
00:25:31.950 --> 00:25:35.869
You hope as an athlete that you're able to do that, but when it comes, you just never know.
00:25:35.950 --> 00:25:38.190
It's one of those things where you don't know until you're in it.
00:25:38.589 --> 00:25:42.349
And in that moment, I wasn't, I did not care.
00:25:42.509 --> 00:25:44.430
I did not care less about my knee.
00:25:44.589 --> 00:25:47.069
Like I didn't think twice, I just did what I had to do.
00:25:47.230 --> 00:25:53.629
And I think in that moment, if I would have thought, I wouldn't have been able to score it, because I think the goalkeeper would have been able to get to it.
00:25:53.789 --> 00:26:11.069
I think that's such an honest and real feeling that many athletes who have some kind of injury that is related to a movement that they did in a game in a practice, there's always gonna be that little bit of fear of well, what if I do that same motion and something bad happens again?
00:26:11.230 --> 00:26:14.349
Or will I be scared of doing something like that ever again?
00:26:14.670 --> 00:26:26.829
And so to kind of have that real experience in the moment and not having a single thought in your mind of other than I'm just gonna go out there and score has to be so good too, knowing that you're not scared to meet the moment.
00:26:26.990 --> 00:26:30.269
You're not scared of letting this injury, you know, get inside your head.
00:26:30.430 --> 00:26:32.349
You're gonna play out there and you're gonna play with no fear.
00:26:32.509 --> 00:26:33.230
Yeah, exactly.
00:26:33.470 --> 00:26:37.389
Well, one goal wasn't enough for you in that game because you scored again later on.
00:26:37.549 --> 00:26:44.190
Now we're in the 67th minute, and Tennessee puts together a really nice sequence and you end up on the backside at the far post.
00:26:44.349 --> 00:26:50.109
Walk me through how this play developed from your perspective and what you were thinking as you saw the ball just come right to you.
00:26:50.349 --> 00:26:57.069
Yeah, um, from my perspective, I personally love scoring off crosses.
00:26:57.230 --> 00:27:01.309
Um, I think Taylor is phenomenal at services in the box.
00:27:01.629 --> 00:27:19.069
And that is actually in the Clemson exhibition, we also had a goal together where she um kind of had a similar ball, kind of ish, and then I actually had a header that goal, and that was like my revenge moment of kind of having another goal against the same team that I tore my ACL in the same exhibition the year before.
00:27:19.230 --> 00:27:22.430
Um, but Taylor and I have kind of been working on that connection like all summer.
00:27:22.509 --> 00:27:26.029
So when she like was kind of she's fast, you know.
00:27:26.190 --> 00:27:30.990
I remember when she got that ball and took that touch, I was like, I have to make it into the box right now.
00:27:31.069 --> 00:27:35.389
That's all I could think about was my job is to get in the box.
00:27:35.549 --> 00:27:37.950
Whether it comes to me or not, I need to be there.
00:27:38.430 --> 00:27:40.349
And I'm wide open at the back post.
00:27:40.509 --> 00:27:44.670
And Taylor just like basically gives me a silver goal on a platter.
00:27:44.750 --> 00:27:47.309
Like, that's like the best way I can explain it.
00:27:47.470 --> 00:27:49.069
And yeah, it was just awesome.
00:27:49.230 --> 00:27:57.869
And then to share that moment with Shay, too, who is also coming back from injury and um is not only one of my best friends, but also my roommate now is also really cool too.
00:27:58.109 --> 00:28:05.309
When the game was over and you're able to process really like what had just happened, you didn't just score once, you scored twice.
00:28:05.470 --> 00:28:11.629
It's like a welcome homecoming moment for you, back to soccer and to being a lady vol.
00:28:11.950 --> 00:28:12.990
Your family's there.
00:28:13.149 --> 00:28:16.109
I'm sure Coach had some things to say to you afterwards.
00:28:16.430 --> 00:28:17.950
What were you feeling?
00:28:18.029 --> 00:28:22.509
And and how were you able to, how long did it truly take you to process, you know, the whole day?
00:28:22.750 --> 00:28:24.829
In some ways, I still haven't processed it.
00:28:24.990 --> 00:28:29.069
Because like I said, I hadn't like rewatched really that moment until now.
00:28:29.149 --> 00:28:32.670
And I think I kind of was like, okay, let's go.
00:28:32.750 --> 00:28:38.029
Like I'm like, we won, great, but we have so many other games left, kind of.
00:28:38.109 --> 00:28:53.629
I think um that was like maybe my initial thought, and I still think I kind of have that way because like it's awesome, it's cool, but I'm thinking of so many other things where I'm like, Taylor's ball was great, Ava's ball was great, like it's not just my finish, so I'm also like, okay, great, moving on.
00:28:53.710 --> 00:28:56.109
I don't know, I don't like love talking about myself in that way.
00:28:56.750 --> 00:28:59.549
Um I feel like a little awkward in that way.
00:28:59.789 --> 00:29:11.629
Um, but I think that game will be forever like ingrained in my memory of college soccer and will be a highlight for sure.
00:29:11.789 --> 00:29:20.109
I didn't have any expectations going into the game, and I think that's what made it even more special was to have that like come off the way that it did.
00:29:20.190 --> 00:29:23.309
I couldn't have, I could not have asked for a first game back, a better first game back.
00:29:23.629 --> 00:29:27.069
And then after waiting almost two years for one, you've suddenly got three pretty quickly.
00:29:27.149 --> 00:29:36.029
You kind of did touch on this, but how much confidence does it give you in your game and coming back from this injury, seeing already the success that you've had this season?
00:29:36.430 --> 00:29:39.629
I'm so excited for the rest of the season.
00:29:39.789 --> 00:29:49.710
I think someone coming back from an injury, any injury, not just an ACL, but any athlete, they can only hope to play with confidence after.
00:29:49.869 --> 00:29:55.230
That's just the one thing that some people just have a harder time getting back.
00:29:55.309 --> 00:29:55.950
And it's hard.
00:29:56.029 --> 00:29:57.230
It's really, really hard.
00:29:57.389 --> 00:30:04.029
I can't kind of sit here and act like I've always had confidence because that would just be lying.
00:30:04.190 --> 00:30:07.869
There's been it's taken a lot to kind of build that back.
00:30:08.029 --> 00:30:13.549
And sometimes you do kind of have to fake it till you make it and almost show it until you feel it type of thing.
00:30:13.869 --> 00:30:18.269
And to play with confidence now is all that I could have asked for.
00:30:18.349 --> 00:30:26.430
And I'm just so excited for the rest of the season and the way that we're playing right now to continue like winning and seeing all of that pay off is just amazing.
00:30:26.670 --> 00:30:36.589
Right, because I feel like when you're playing with confidence, like you just get to go out there and have fun, like you really get to let go of all the stressors or all the you know things you're telling yourself, all the mental pressures, and just play free 100%.
00:30:36.990 --> 00:30:41.549
I want to talk too about your role this year being a little bit different because you are one of the captains along with Caden.
00:30:41.869 --> 00:30:46.589
So, what does wearing the captain's band mean to you after everything you've been through off the field?
00:30:46.910 --> 00:30:59.230
Yeah, um, I think it just I I don't want to say it doesn't mean anything because I truly wear that like role with honor and I try and represent that in the best way that I can.
00:30:59.470 --> 00:31:06.589
But at the end of the day, it really just means serving my teammates, like whatever they need, that's my job to provide for them.
00:31:06.829 --> 00:31:11.710
And it's not about me, it's not about Caden, it's about what's best for our team.
00:31:11.950 --> 00:31:23.389
And so I am filled with so much honor at the fact that I was not only thought to have been a good person for that position from the coaches, but also from my teammates.
00:31:23.549 --> 00:31:26.750
It was something that was also like given their input on to.
00:31:27.230 --> 00:31:31.470
And so knowing that, I am so honored.
00:31:31.549 --> 00:31:33.549
But at the end of the day, it's all about them.
00:31:33.869 --> 00:31:37.869
In terms of your leadership, how would you describe the way that you lead?
00:31:38.829 --> 00:31:40.269
Oh, that's a good question.
00:31:40.430 --> 00:31:48.589
I think before actually stepping into a captain's role, I was very much like lead by example and then support.
00:31:48.750 --> 00:31:58.990
I think it was one of those things where we talk about accountability a lot and you can't really hold other people accountable if you're not accountable yourself.
00:31:59.149 --> 00:32:01.069
So it starts with self-accountability.
00:32:01.230 --> 00:32:07.230
So everything I do every day, I try and make sure it's holding the standard that we set as a Lady Vol.
00:32:07.389 --> 00:32:07.629
Yeah.
00:32:07.950 --> 00:32:11.869
And then it's just building relationships with your teammates.
00:32:12.029 --> 00:32:14.829
You can't lead them if you don't know them.
00:32:14.990 --> 00:32:21.710
And so I think finding ways to get to know your teammates personally and build those relationships are really important as well.
00:32:21.869 --> 00:32:27.710
So I think, especially last year, I really focused on the relationship aspect because that's all I could do.
00:32:27.869 --> 00:32:31.869
Because I wasn't I didn't have an on-field relationship with them.
00:32:32.029 --> 00:32:33.869
So the only option was personal.
00:32:33.950 --> 00:32:34.190
Yeah.
00:32:34.349 --> 00:32:37.710
And so I really took the time to do that off the field.
00:32:37.869 --> 00:32:39.149
So I think that helped a lot.
00:32:39.309 --> 00:32:47.470
Yeah, and you can tell when the relationships off the field are strong because they directly affect what's happening on the field as well, which is great to your point.
00:32:47.629 --> 00:32:47.789
Yeah.
00:32:47.950 --> 00:32:48.190
100%.
00:32:48.509 --> 00:32:52.029
So let's zoom out now because this team has had a really great start to the season.
00:32:52.109 --> 00:32:56.589
You're 6-0-1, and Tennessee has scored first in all of its matches.
00:32:56.829 --> 00:33:02.269
What do you think has allowed this group to come out so aggressive in the way that you set the tone early?
00:33:02.509 --> 00:33:09.789
Yeah, I think just the quality of our attacking group, it is truly not just one person.
00:33:09.869 --> 00:33:11.869
It's not two people, it's not even three people.
00:33:11.950 --> 00:33:19.789
Like we have five, six, seven attackers, and it's not just who we start on the field, it's who comes in.
00:33:19.950 --> 00:33:23.710
It it like our attacking line is so deep.
00:33:23.869 --> 00:33:38.190
And I think that's really, really important because now we're getting into the part of the season where teams kind of scout your players, and it's kind of one of those things where I'm always a little nosy and I'm like, I wonder what they say, because I'm like, you can't just scout one person, right?
00:33:38.430 --> 00:33:39.069
You can't.
00:33:39.309 --> 00:33:48.190
We um, as like a team here, we'll have certain players that we highlight, and I'm like, so are you putting six people on your like highlight thing going into the game?
00:33:48.430 --> 00:33:52.349
Because I can think of six or seven people that are dangerous.
00:33:52.670 --> 00:33:54.750
Like, and so that's really, really cool.
00:33:54.829 --> 00:33:58.269
I think the quality of our attacking group is phenomenal and it's really exciting.
00:33:58.509 --> 00:34:03.549
Well, that goes directly into my next question because it's not just one or two people producing, like you're saying.
00:34:03.710 --> 00:34:08.829
So far this season, 11 different Lady Vols have scored, and six have had multiple goals as well.
00:34:08.990 --> 00:34:19.950
And you mentioned as an attacking player, how dangerous is it for other groups, knowing that they have to have eyes on so many different players and not just focus on one or maybe two shining stars.
00:34:20.190 --> 00:34:21.789
Yeah, it's incredible.
00:34:21.950 --> 00:34:28.590
I mean, that's I like coming in as a transfer, this is exactly what I wanted.
00:34:28.750 --> 00:34:48.830
I wanted to play with players around me that would not only allow me to compliment them, but them compliment me and try and find a way to almost show all of our strengths, and maybe not in the same game, because every game requires something differently, but at some point we will all shine.
00:34:48.990 --> 00:34:53.230
And I think that's what makes this team so incredibly special.
00:34:53.390 --> 00:35:01.070
And I mean, iron sharpens iron, and that's something my like dad kind of grew up saying, and I've always grown up kind of wanting.
00:35:01.230 --> 00:35:09.550
And I think that just is so exciting because we are so good, and it's not like it's gonna come from just one or two players, like you said.
00:35:09.950 --> 00:35:18.750
Well, also, Joe has mentioned over and over again how impressed he is with the work ethic of this group and the togetherness of all of you guys.
00:35:18.990 --> 00:35:22.190
What's what stands out to you about the chemistry of this group?
00:35:22.510 --> 00:35:29.790
I think at the end of the day, the selflessness is really awesome to see grow.
00:35:30.030 --> 00:35:37.390
And it's something that I think is really unheard of from a young team, which we are overall.
00:35:37.710 --> 00:35:44.750
Um, I mean, it takes a level of selfishness to be an attacker, to score goals.
00:35:44.990 --> 00:35:47.710
Of course, you want the ball, of course you want the moment.
00:35:47.790 --> 00:35:49.310
It that just comes with the job.
00:35:49.390 --> 00:35:52.190
And I think it makes our forwards awesome.
00:35:52.350 --> 00:35:59.790
Like we are all a little selfish and a little cocky, and like we know that we can do it, but that makes us amazing soccer players.
00:35:59.950 --> 00:36:09.150
And I think what sets us apart is at the end of the day, the pure joy that we have when another one of us scores is fully what sets us apart.
00:36:09.230 --> 00:36:25.470
Is like that ability to put any ego aside and focus on the selflessness of the team and knowing that kind of your moment is our moment, and we share that, and it's not just about the one person, I think really sets us apart and something we're still growing into.
00:36:25.710 --> 00:36:25.870
Yeah.
00:36:26.030 --> 00:36:35.550
And I think that's a testament to the Lady Evolve standard that this soccer program and also our athletic department is really proud to represent across the board with all of our sports.
00:36:35.710 --> 00:36:36.110
Oh, yeah.
00:36:36.269 --> 00:36:40.910
So you opened SEC Play on the Road against LSU, came out of that one with a three to one win.
00:36:41.070 --> 00:36:47.070
What did you learn about this team and the way that they were able to handle their first conference test, especially with it being on the road?
00:36:47.390 --> 00:36:50.269
Yeah, um, I love conference play.
00:36:50.510 --> 00:36:55.470
I think I will like look back in 20 years from now and be like, yeah, that that feeling I miss.
00:36:55.630 --> 00:37:00.430
Not even just the game specifically, but there's something in the air when SEC play comes around.
00:37:00.590 --> 00:37:06.430
And at that point, we talked a lot going into that game that rankings mean absolutely nothing anymore.
00:37:06.590 --> 00:37:08.750
Non-conference really doesn't mean anything anymore.
00:37:08.830 --> 00:37:22.990
Everyone has a like O and O slate starting conference, and a lot of teams look to that as their opportunity for a fresh start to get a good seed in the SEC tournament and still be able to make a run when we get into postseason.
00:37:23.230 --> 00:37:32.990
And at that point, every game is a dogfight, and it's hard to win in general, no matter who you're playing, and it's especially hard to win on the road.
00:37:33.150 --> 00:37:40.030
I think home field advantage is really important when you get to this part of the season, just with fatigue and travel and all that.
00:37:40.190 --> 00:37:46.670
So going into the first road game and seeing us come out in the way that we did was awesome.
00:37:46.830 --> 00:37:49.470
As a captain, I was so proud.
00:37:49.630 --> 00:37:50.910
So incredibly proud.
00:37:51.150 --> 00:37:54.830
Well, what positives do you take away from that match?
00:37:54.990 --> 00:38:02.269
Knowing that this Friday, and by the time this podcast comes out, it'll be game day for you guys on the road again against Texas.
00:38:02.430 --> 00:38:10.350
What do you take away from that LSU match that you want to also bring into this Texas one and maybe even some ways that you hope to see growth?
00:38:10.590 --> 00:38:20.670
Yeah, I think that if anything, I would love for just even the rest of my teammates to be filled with even more belief and confidence that like we can do this.
00:38:20.910 --> 00:38:22.510
Any opponent, bring it on.
00:38:22.670 --> 00:38:26.110
It's not where we play, it's not who we play.
00:38:26.350 --> 00:38:32.430
We hold the standard and we set that, and we don't adjust playing to anyone else's style.
00:38:32.510 --> 00:38:37.470
Like we know our standards, our game, and we can beat anyone in the country.
00:38:37.550 --> 00:38:45.230
And that's like what I hope to see that confidence continue to grow throughout like SEC play and into the postseason.
00:38:45.470 --> 00:38:47.950
What do you believe the ceiling is for this Tennessee team?
00:38:48.190 --> 00:38:49.790
I do not think there is a ceiling.
00:38:49.950 --> 00:38:54.110
I truly believe there is no ceiling, and it is so exciting to see.
00:38:54.190 --> 00:38:55.870
I am so proud of this team.
00:38:56.030 --> 00:38:57.870
Like, genuinely, there's no ceiling.
00:38:58.190 --> 00:39:01.070
Which is so awesome to hear, especially giving it your fifth year.
00:39:01.230 --> 00:39:02.430
Like, that's what you want.
00:39:02.590 --> 00:39:13.230
You want to have a team that just gives it everything that they've got because while it might not be their last opportunity, it is your last season, and you're sh already showing that you want everyone to make the most of it.
00:39:13.310 --> 00:39:15.870
And it's great that that's the perspective that they have too.
00:39:16.030 --> 00:39:16.910
Oh, yeah, 100%.
00:39:17.310 --> 00:39:22.590
I think I had told Caden, I was like, if you need to keep me in check, keep me in check, because I've never wanted to win more in my life.
00:39:22.750 --> 00:39:25.710
Like I'm like, this is this is truly my last chance.
00:39:26.030 --> 00:39:32.830
So yeah, it's not there is a little bit more emotion riding on it for me, which is a perspective I have.
00:39:32.990 --> 00:39:35.790
Like, I I know how I was my freshman sophomore year.
00:39:35.870 --> 00:39:41.390
Like, you do think, well, I have another season, and then it gets to a point where you don't have another season, and that's me right now.
00:39:41.470 --> 00:39:52.990
So yeah, I am truly giving my all for this team and almost thinking of every game of being my last game because I mean, at the end of the day, like that taught that's something that I learned last year.
00:39:53.390 --> 00:39:54.350
It could be your last game.
00:39:54.590 --> 00:39:55.950
Right, and to never take it for granted.
00:39:56.750 --> 00:40:13.310
When you look back on the Kylie who was going through all the ups but also downs of her soccer career, what would you go back and tell her based on the person that you are sitting here today and how you've been able to go through all the stages?
00:40:14.190 --> 00:40:15.950
Wow, that's a really tough question.
00:40:16.110 --> 00:40:17.870
Wow, what I would tell her.
00:40:18.269 --> 00:40:28.350
Um I think that I would probably someone at the beginning of my college career, I would say just like focus on living in the moment.
00:40:28.430 --> 00:40:40.910
Because I think I was um kind of very like future thinking um in my first couple years of like kind of always wondering what was next and not what I was currently doing.
00:40:41.070 --> 00:40:42.910
So I think that's like really important.
00:40:43.390 --> 00:40:55.550
But I think my last year self going through rehab, I spent a lot of it wondering why it happened to me and feeling like I didn't deserve it.
00:40:55.710 --> 00:41:04.590
Like a lot of people may feel that way, but um going through that a second time when some people don't even have to experience it once.
00:41:04.670 --> 00:41:09.550
I definitely had a little bit of like bitterness, I would say, that I'd had to work through at the beginning.
00:41:09.710 --> 00:41:16.430
But now I'm like, if someone were to tell me, like, oh yeah, you could go back and not do that and play last year, I'd be like, no, I don't want it.
00:41:16.670 --> 00:41:21.310
Like everything that last year was, I is so worth it.
00:41:21.470 --> 00:41:25.230
Like I would not change my journey or any part of it for a second.
00:41:25.550 --> 00:41:33.310
For anyone who went through something similar to you or is currently going through something, what is your advice to them?
00:41:33.630 --> 00:41:40.030
My advice would just be like consistency makes all the difference.
00:41:40.190 --> 00:41:47.310
It's not about what you do in six months, it's about what you do today and tomorrow and what you can do.
00:41:47.470 --> 00:41:57.470
Instead of focusing on not being able to play your sport or running, focus on walking, focus on being able to get your range of motion back, whatever you're working on.
00:41:57.630 --> 00:42:01.150
Every day there's something that you're doing and it will pay off.
00:42:01.470 --> 00:42:02.110
Oh my goodness.
00:42:02.269 --> 00:42:04.590
Kylie, this has been amazing.
00:42:04.910 --> 00:42:06.269
You are incredible.
00:42:06.430 --> 00:42:10.190
I think you have such a wise maturity to you.
00:42:10.350 --> 00:42:15.390
Um, I know you're a fifth-year senior, you're like, oh yeah, girl, she's got all the wisdom you need.
00:42:15.710 --> 00:42:20.670
But no, seriously, it was like truly so wonderful getting to know you and your story.
00:42:20.750 --> 00:42:28.590
And I think that it's so relatable to so many people who have gone through injuries that have sidelined them or you know put them back in their progress in their collegiate career.
00:42:28.670 --> 00:42:34.110
But you're a testament to like you're saying, if you put in the work and you believe in the process, like good things will come to you.
00:42:34.190 --> 00:42:38.670
And now you're living out your fifth-year dream here at Tennessee, and it's so exciting.
00:42:38.830 --> 00:42:42.910
So um, gosh, I can't wait to see what the rest of this team does this year.
00:42:43.070 --> 00:42:48.910
You guys are like full steam ahead on a great path, and uh good luck the rest of the way, and we'll be cheering you guys on.
00:42:49.070 --> 00:42:49.790
Thank you so much.
00:42:49.950 --> 00:42:50.910
Thank you for having me.
00:42:51.150 --> 00:42:53.390
Like we talked about earlier in this episode.
00:42:53.550 --> 00:43:00.590
You can catch Kylie and the Tennessee soccer team in action tonight on the road against Texas at 8 p.m.
00:43:00.750 --> 00:43:01.310
Eastern time.
00:43:01.630 --> 00:43:05.230
As always, thanks so much for tuning in, and we will see you guys next time.
00:43:05.390 --> 00:43:06.430
Bye, y'all.
