I just cannot appreciate the work that you're doing enough.
00:01:45.760 --> 00:01:47.359
Oh my gosh, thank you so much.
00:01:47.519 --> 00:01:56.959
Well, it's because of all of you guys out there and these amazing guests like yourself that come onto the podcast that we're able to do this and to continue inspiring so many people out there.
00:01:57.200 --> 00:02:00.159
Would you mind introducing yourself to our listeners today?
00:02:00.719 --> 00:02:01.519
Sure, sure.
00:02:01.680 --> 00:02:05.599
I'm the founder and CEO of a company called SheTeo.
00:02:05.920 --> 00:02:12.879
Today, SheTio is the largest global network there is for women and non-binary engineering leaders.
00:02:13.120 --> 00:02:19.039
Our network today has over 5,000 members across 65 different countries.
00:02:19.280 --> 00:02:23.360
At SheTio, we host a ton of programming.
00:02:23.520 --> 00:02:37.919
We host an annual summit, regular events, we also offer accelerator and programs and workshops, all designed to accelerate the careers of women in engineering delivered by experienced engineering executives.
00:02:38.240 --> 00:02:53.840
To further drive the community to engage with each other and build community with each other, we also have global hubs which give members the opportunity to really come together in meaningful ways and impact each other's careers.
00:02:54.319 --> 00:03:09.039
Prior to founding SheTio, I was the chief product and technology officer, CPTO for short, of various tech companies in the Bay Area where I built and scaled, built, scaled, and transformed their strategies and products.
00:03:09.360 --> 00:03:10.400
Oh my gosh.
00:03:10.560 --> 00:03:12.000
How did you get into this?
00:03:12.159 --> 00:03:15.439
What made you decide to start this amazing organization?
00:03:16.960 --> 00:03:19.120
So it's an interesting story.
00:03:27.120 --> 00:03:34.479
And growing up in technology, and especially in engineering, you know that there are very, very few women around you.
00:03:34.879 --> 00:03:37.759
You know, just 15% of engineers are women.
00:03:38.639 --> 00:03:43.759
Less than 7% of engineering execs are women.
00:03:43.919 --> 00:03:46.240
So the numbers are just abysmal.
00:03:47.120 --> 00:03:55.039
I was getting to that point, you know, and in rapid succession, life always, you know, happens while you're focused on your career.
00:03:55.360 --> 00:04:00.319
In very rapid succession, I lost both my brother and my mom.
00:04:01.680 --> 00:04:07.840
And I think their passing kind of was a pivotal moment in my career.
00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:15.599
It really got me thinking about my purpose and the meaning of my work.
00:04:17.120 --> 00:04:27.199
And it was during this time that I was doing this introspection that I came across, you know, a study which said that less than 9% of engineering exact roles are held by women.
00:04:27.759 --> 00:04:33.199
And I really thought, I'm like, somebody must be doing something about it.
00:04:33.360 --> 00:04:36.240
You know, we make up 50% of the world's population.
00:04:36.399 --> 00:04:43.120
How can only 9% of us be in this amazing this raw important role?
00:04:43.519 --> 00:04:53.920
And I looked around, no organization was working anything, was doing anything about it, was working on solving this problem.
00:04:54.160 --> 00:04:57.920
They were not even, there was nobody who was even elevating this problem.
00:04:58.480 --> 00:05:02.480
So literally, that's really when I had an aha moment.
00:05:02.639 --> 00:05:07.839
Literally the next month, I went to my CEO and I quit my job and I started Sheetia.
00:05:09.680 --> 00:05:10.560
I love that.
00:05:10.720 --> 00:05:13.920
And as a mother of four daughters, thank you so much.
00:05:14.160 --> 00:05:17.600
We need amazing women like yourself to do that.
00:05:17.920 --> 00:05:20.160
Yes, and I'm the mother of a daughter as well.
00:05:20.319 --> 00:05:24.879
And you know, our daughters inspire us in in such amazing ways, right?
00:05:25.120 --> 00:05:42.240
And uh, you know, I really thought that I really thought about it deep, and I was like, wait, if if I, having been in the industry for as long as I have, don't know of 15 other women in this role, then how is my daughter going to aspire to be us?
00:05:42.480 --> 00:05:47.279
And so yeah, so I'm really grateful to be them to be the mom of a daughter.
00:05:47.519 --> 00:05:50.319
Oh my gosh, is your daughter in engineering also?
00:05:50.959 --> 00:05:55.120
She is not, but she does aspire to be in engineering, which is exciting.
00:05:55.360 --> 00:05:56.879
She's she's a high schooler.
00:05:57.199 --> 00:05:58.959
Oh my gosh, I love that.
00:05:59.199 --> 00:06:00.720
Well, you know, congratulations.
00:06:00.800 --> 00:06:01.600
I think that's wonderful.
00:06:01.680 --> 00:06:03.040
I have one left in high school.
00:06:03.120 --> 00:06:05.120
My rest of them have gone to college.
00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:08.879
And one actually just graduated in a male-dominated field.
00:06:08.959 --> 00:06:12.160
She is now a journeyman uh parts technician.
00:06:12.560 --> 00:06:13.279
Oh wow.
00:06:13.600 --> 00:06:19.120
I was like, congratulations, because it is to have that red seal and to know that she can work anywhere here in Canada.
00:06:19.279 --> 00:06:20.639
I I was so proud of her.
00:06:20.720 --> 00:06:23.680
And she doesn't realize how much of an accomplishment that really is.
00:06:23.759 --> 00:06:31.600
And like, as you were saying, in a male-dominated industry, it's you don't see women, but if you can be one of the women to really inspire others, why not?
00:06:31.920 --> 00:06:33.040
Yeah, exactly.
00:06:33.199 --> 00:06:34.000
That's amazing.
00:06:34.160 --> 00:06:36.879
Congratulations to her and congratulations to you.
00:06:37.199 --> 00:06:38.879
Well, that's thank you so much.
00:06:39.120 --> 00:06:42.079
I, you know, I want to talk a little bit about more about this organization.
00:06:42.160 --> 00:06:45.199
I want to know exactly what you're doing in ShTO.
00:06:46.160 --> 00:06:48.639
Yeah, so you know, I think so.
00:06:48.720 --> 00:06:55.519
Let me just talk a little bit about how we got started and you know, my my original theses going into it.
00:06:55.839 --> 00:07:04.639
When I started SheTo, I really just wanted my goal is just to get more women into the C-suite.
00:07:05.120 --> 00:07:12.160
Uh, I didn't start ShTO2 for it to become this global network or this community.
00:07:12.399 --> 00:07:18.399
I didn't even know, you know, more than I would say 20 other women in this field.
00:07:18.800 --> 00:07:29.279
And my hypothesis going in was if I impact one person's career, that's missions, mission served.
00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:42.639
And and and and my hypothesis going in was I will just provide enough value, and if I provide enough value, then people will come.
00:07:44.160 --> 00:07:53.360
So all of our programming that we host today, that we continue to host, is all based on how much impact it's delivering.
00:07:53.920 --> 00:08:04.319
And I think that hypothesis really worked out for us because if something was not impactful, I I cut it, we didn't do it.
00:08:04.480 --> 00:08:12.800
If something was truly meaningful uh for our members' careers, we've continued, we continued, we continued and we double down on it.
00:08:13.120 --> 00:08:21.199
And that's really how our network has grown, our growth has come, our programs have been developed.
00:08:21.519 --> 00:08:30.079
And that's really you know the the beauty of this you know organic movement that we've that we've created together.
00:08:30.399 --> 00:08:38.960
So today we host so we originally started, we started right at right on the right when we were coming out of COVID.
00:08:39.279 --> 00:08:43.279
The world was kind of used to connecting over Zoom and everything.
00:08:43.600 --> 00:08:53.360
So we started the community by creating a Slack channel where you know everybody got to virtually chit-chat with each other, connect with each other.
00:08:53.679 --> 00:08:57.519
Then we started hosting events, which we still do.
00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:05.039
And these were all virtual events, so anybody from from around the world could join and connect in you know with each other.
00:09:05.200 --> 00:09:09.679
Sometimes they would just be happy hours, other times we would have speakers.
00:09:09.919 --> 00:09:14.720
It was just a mechanism to come together and learn from each other.
00:09:15.600 --> 00:09:27.919
Then as we grew, it seemed like it would be great to have some structured programs to truly help with the acceleration of our members' careers.
00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:31.919
And that's how our accelerator programs and workshops came about.
00:09:32.240 --> 00:09:36.879
Our accelerator programs and workshops have been phenomenal.
00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:43.120
We have had over 500 participants in these programs.
00:09:43.600 --> 00:09:50.399
47% of the participants of participants in these programs get promoted within the first year.
00:09:51.360 --> 00:09:56.240
So the results that we have seen are just incredible.
00:09:57.679 --> 00:10:03.759
And then a few years down the road, um, people were like, you know, we were out of COVID.
00:10:03.919 --> 00:10:07.519
The hunger was to connect with each other in person.
00:10:08.320 --> 00:10:15.200
And the request from the community was to host a summit, to host a conference.
00:10:15.519 --> 00:10:19.279
And initially I was like, no, it's just too much work.
00:10:19.360 --> 00:10:25.600
Uh, but ultimately, you know, I gave up and we hosted our very first summit, which was an in-person summit.
00:10:26.080 --> 00:10:31.440
And it still gives me goosebumps thinking about the summit.
00:10:31.519 --> 00:10:52.559
Uh, it was just such an empowering and uplifting experience to see to get together in person, to see other amazing leaders and the work that they were doing, to get inspired by each other and just to be in the same room of these high-powered executives, all women, you know, sharing their stories and learnings.
00:10:52.720 --> 00:10:56.080
Um, and you know, that's become an animal feature now.
00:10:56.320 --> 00:11:04.720
So, you know, like I said, organically we've developed programming that our members have requested, and that's delivered impact.
00:11:05.279 --> 00:11:09.759
And that's one of the reasons why Sheetio just continues to grow.
00:11:09.919 --> 00:11:15.120
Uh, I just I just could not be happier, uh, you know, as to how far we've come.
00:11:15.440 --> 00:11:18.480
And you've also done your virtual career fairs.
00:11:18.639 --> 00:11:21.679
Tell me about that because I think that is brilliant.
00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:22.960
Yes, yes.
00:11:23.120 --> 00:11:33.679
So, you know, again, it comes with the with the desire to to help our women uh get into the C-suite, uh, and we and we want to help them in a variety of different ways.
00:11:33.919 --> 00:11:47.120
So a couple of years ago, when the layoff started to happen, um we very rapidly came up with you know a variety of different programs to help and support those who were getting impacted.
00:11:47.360 --> 00:11:50.240
We did, we hosted interview workshops.
00:11:50.399 --> 00:11:59.600
Even today we have various interview support groups where you know our members can join and you know lean on each other, do mock interviews with each other, resume reviews, what have you.
00:12:00.080 --> 00:12:23.759
And and uh last year, as companies started to hire again, we decided that we need to bring these roles to our members, uh, especially in this market, where the market is just flooded with candidates, it's just particularly hard for folks to get connected with recruiters.
00:12:23.919 --> 00:12:26.320
And our virtual career fairs are very different.
00:12:26.480 --> 00:12:40.559
We not only bring roles to our community, we also connect our community directly with recruiting teams so that they can bypass all of the noise and they can connect directly with each other.
00:12:40.799 --> 00:12:50.639
So at least we can ensure that they know what the companies are looking for, what recruiters are looking for when they look at you know somebody's resume.
00:12:51.279 --> 00:12:59.440
And our hope in partnering with these companies is in our is that at least your resume will get looked at.
00:12:59.600 --> 00:13:03.440
Um, so so they have they've been amazingly successful.
00:13:03.600 --> 00:13:05.360
We host them every quarter.
00:13:05.759 --> 00:13:09.039
They're they're free for anybody to join.
00:13:09.360 --> 00:13:16.960
And we have had amazing partners uh in partner companies who have brought their roles uh to our members.
00:13:18.000 --> 00:13:19.039
It is beautiful.
00:13:19.200 --> 00:13:26.159
I love what you are doing in this community, and you are also showcasing them with your future leaders' Fridays.
00:13:26.320 --> 00:13:26.879
I love that.
00:13:27.039 --> 00:13:31.360
What an amazing thing, just to keep on showcasing these amazing women out there.
00:13:31.759 --> 00:13:32.240
Yep.
00:13:32.480 --> 00:13:33.039
Yep.
00:13:33.360 --> 00:13:45.360
Because, you know, when we think about tech famous technologists or technologists who are having an impact on this world, we people don't often think about women.
00:13:45.600 --> 00:14:00.000
Um, and and you know, you you mentioned future leaders, and and the way that the reason that came about is two years ago, New York Times published, you know, Top Voices in AI, and they were all men.
00:14:00.879 --> 00:14:06.399
And I mean, the godmother of AI is Fei Fei Li, and she's a woman.
00:14:06.720 --> 00:14:21.440
So that's really how that initiative started, where I was like, you know, let's make the world aware that there are some amazing women who are who have who are who are leading the way here, uh, you know, and and let's not forget about that.
00:14:22.320 --> 00:14:26.960
Well, there isn't a lot of recognition, and I'm so glad that you're doing that because we definitely need that.
00:14:27.039 --> 00:14:29.360
And this is how we inspire the next generation.
00:14:29.519 --> 00:14:40.879
This is how women like you inspire my daughters because they need to see that there is somebody that is lighting the path for them to continue to do the things that they want to do.
00:14:41.360 --> 00:14:49.840
This is just the baby steps, and you're saying it just happened naturally, but it's going to grow so much, and there's going to be so many more people that are going to be impacted by it.
00:14:50.320 --> 00:14:51.200
Yes, yes.
00:14:51.360 --> 00:14:52.159
I'm excited.
00:14:52.240 --> 00:14:59.279
I'm excited at the impact that we're delivering today, and I'm excited, you know, as to as to where we get to in the next 10 years.
00:14:59.600 --> 00:15:00.240
I love it.
00:15:00.399 --> 00:15:04.080
So, what is next for Shitio or next for you?
00:15:04.720 --> 00:15:12.480
So, you know, my big goal is less than 9% of engineering exec roles are held by women today.
00:15:12.639 --> 00:15:16.080
In 10 years, I want to move that number to 20%.
00:15:16.960 --> 00:15:20.879
Uh, and I truly fundamentally believe that we can get there.
00:15:21.120 --> 00:15:40.960
Uh, what's next for me in the immediate short term, in the next few years, is to continue the work that we're doing, continue to continue to build on the foundations of the programming that we have today and bring it to more and more tech hubs across the globe.
00:15:41.200 --> 00:15:49.279
Uh, just last year we we opened our, we expanded our local hubs from 4 to 12.
00:15:49.519 --> 00:15:53.600
We are now not only in the US, but also international as well.
00:15:53.759 --> 00:16:05.759
We have hubs in London, Seattle, uh, sorry, London, Toronto, and within the US, in Seattle, San Francisco Bay Area, Austin, Boston, New York City.
00:16:05.919 --> 00:16:13.440
Uh, my goal over the next few years is to pretty much be present in every single big tech hub that you see.
00:16:13.919 --> 00:16:26.960
Um, I want, yeah, and I want to continue partnering with companies, at least companies that still care, um, and uh to bring our amazing programming to their members.
00:16:27.600 --> 00:16:43.679
Um, in conjunction with all of the programming that we're hosting, that we're doing, I also really want to elevate this issue so that we, everybody in tech understands how acute this problem is.
00:16:43.919 --> 00:16:50.720
So last year we launched our first uh state of women in engineering leadership report.
00:16:50.879 --> 00:17:16.720
We published our first report in October of last year, and it highlighted not just the gaps that we see in um representation, gender representation in tech today, but we also double down and looked into why that is, what the causes are, and what possible solutions there might be.
00:17:17.119 --> 00:17:28.400
Uh we showcased companies that were doing a good job and why they were being successful in um in having an increased representation in their organizations.
00:17:29.039 --> 00:17:43.839
Um, my hope is to continue to publish this annually uh in order to continue to raise awareness of this acute um uh representation gap that we see in the industry today.
00:17:44.480 --> 00:17:45.759
I love your vision.
00:17:46.079 --> 00:17:52.799
And that's exactly why you are absolutely perfect for this month's podcast, because you do have vision without limits.
00:17:52.960 --> 00:17:59.359
I can see that, and I'm just beyond excited for everybody to get to know you on our tribe here.
00:18:00.559 --> 00:18:01.200
Thank you.
00:18:01.359 --> 00:18:01.920
Thank you.
00:18:02.240 --> 00:18:03.359
Right back at you.
00:18:03.599 --> 00:18:04.960
It's it's amazing, isn't it?
00:18:05.039 --> 00:18:13.680
When like-minded individuals can come together and they can initiate change, and this is what we need right now, and and this is what you're doing.
00:18:13.839 --> 00:18:18.319
You are a very amazing diva, and we're so happy to welcome you to our diva family.
00:18:18.559 --> 00:18:25.039
So, Nidhi, what other things is there things that maybe our listeners can get a part of?
00:18:25.279 --> 00:18:29.279
Can they bring more awareness to this in any way?
00:18:29.920 --> 00:18:31.279
Yes, 100%.
00:18:31.920 --> 00:18:40.640
So, first of all, um, definitely there are various ways to uh check out she teo and the work that we're doing.
00:18:40.880 --> 00:18:44.799
Uh and you can you can join our network.
00:18:45.039 --> 00:18:53.039
You can, if you know other women uh uh who would benefit from us, uh definitely uh point them to our website.
00:18:53.119 --> 00:18:55.200
It's shtio.org.
00:18:55.440 --> 00:18:58.720
Um, and if you want to help, there are various ways to help.
00:18:58.799 --> 00:19:00.720
We are a registered nonprofit.
00:19:00.799 --> 00:19:06.799
Uh so you know, we want to make sure that we are doing work for the community and for you.
00:19:07.119 --> 00:19:15.279
So you can help us by spreading the word, you can both on social as well as you know by pointing others in your network to our website.
00:19:15.519 --> 00:19:21.359
And if you're an ally and you want to help, you know, there's there's there's space for allies as well.
00:19:21.519 --> 00:19:26.720
Um at, you know, I often say this that we can't do this all by all by ourselves.
00:19:27.039 --> 00:19:35.519
If 91% of the engineering exec roles are held by um allies, we we need to bring them along with us.
00:19:35.759 --> 00:19:41.359
So uh there's room and space and work for each and every one of us uh to do.
00:19:41.519 --> 00:19:44.799
Uh let's let's join hands and work together.
00:19:45.200 --> 00:19:45.839
Wonderful.
00:19:46.000 --> 00:19:47.200
Thank you so much.
00:19:47.440 --> 00:19:48.960
This has been so much fun.
00:19:49.119 --> 00:19:55.039
I do hope that you come back on the Diva's at care again and then we can talk about some more things.
00:19:55.440 --> 00:19:57.119
Uh yeah, I would love to.
00:19:57.359 --> 00:19:58.319
I would love to.
00:19:59.039 --> 00:19:59.599
Perfect.
00:19:59.759 --> 00:20:05.599
Is there any last minute tips or tools, things that you would like to inspire our listeners with?
00:20:06.160 --> 00:20:14.000
Yeah, so I think I think your your theme of the month uh is actually very relevant, determined, not distracted.
00:20:14.400 --> 00:20:22.720
Uh so I just wanted to just touch upon that, especially at this at this time in this universe that we exist in.
00:20:22.799 --> 00:20:29.359
Uh, I think especially for the US, uh it's it's been a very rough few years.
00:20:29.599 --> 00:20:52.720
Um and and I think I would to to anybody listening, if your heart is heavy as mine is, I would say it's easy to give into a feeling of helplessness and it's easy to feel like a victim, but you don't have to.
00:20:53.519 --> 00:20:58.000
Each and every one of us can do something.
00:20:59.359 --> 00:21:01.759
So find your purpose.
00:21:01.920 --> 00:21:06.079
If you don't know what your purpose is just yet, it's okay, it'll come to you.
00:21:06.240 --> 00:21:07.519
Don't push it.
00:21:07.839 --> 00:21:14.559
But find something that you can do, you can contribute in ways big or small.
00:21:15.039 --> 00:21:21.440
Big being, you know, quit your job and start doing something like I did, which I don't recommend for everybody.
00:21:21.680 --> 00:21:29.519
And small could be donate to an organization as much as you can uh to an organization that you believe in, right?
00:21:29.680 --> 00:21:34.880
So you each one of us can make a difference uh in ways big or small.
00:21:35.039 --> 00:21:45.440
You can donate, you can volunteer for a few hours, you can do just focus on doing something kind, doing something meaningful.
00:21:45.599 --> 00:21:54.640
And trust me, that feeling of helplessness will slowly peter away and you will not be as distracted anymore.
00:21:54.799 --> 00:22:01.599
It'll just arm you with more determination than ever to make a Change to make a difference.
00:22:02.079 --> 00:22:03.039
I love that.
00:22:03.200 --> 00:22:04.319
Thank you so much.
00:22:04.480 --> 00:22:06.720
That was absolutely beautifully said.
00:22:07.759 --> 00:22:08.400
Thank you.
00:22:08.640 --> 00:22:09.200
Thank you.
00:22:09.759 --> 00:22:13.279
I absolutely this is, I just I'm just blown away.
00:22:13.359 --> 00:22:14.160
Thank you so much.
00:22:14.319 --> 00:22:19.200
I've had so much fun and I do really want you back on again soon.
00:22:19.519 --> 00:22:20.400
Oh, all right.
00:22:20.559 --> 00:22:22.319
We'll we'll exchange notes in a couple of weeks.
00:22:22.559 --> 00:22:23.359
We'll do that.
00:22:23.599 --> 00:22:24.240
Yeah.
00:22:24.880 --> 00:22:29.920
Oh, well, again, thank you so much to my amazing, amazing guest, Nadi.
00:22:30.319 --> 00:22:34.160
I'm I'm so glad that she was able to take her time today to chat with us.
00:22:34.319 --> 00:22:36.880
It's also important to do something kind.
00:22:36.960 --> 00:22:42.240
Like she was saying, the divas that care is always about kindness first and supporting one another.
00:22:42.400 --> 00:22:47.599
It's really important in a world of uncertainty that we are there to lift each other up.
00:22:47.839 --> 00:22:51.920
So until next time, everybody, make sure that you do something a little bit kind today.
00:22:52.079 --> 00:22:53.519
Take care, everyone.
00:22:54.079 --> 00:22:55.200
Thanks for listening.
