#33 Enoughness
Welcome to Diff'rent Points, episode number 33. I'm joined with my co-host Catherine Llewellyn and I'm Roy Collin. Enoughness, enoughness, what is enough? It's one that's going to make you think really, isn't it? So I'd like Catherine to start thinking first.
Thank you. Well, funnily enough, enoughness is a favourite word for me, you know, because I think often we've got an idea, you know, or I might have an idea of what I want or what I'm trying to achieve. And because I'm fixed on that idea, I'll keep going for it, perhaps longer or further than I really needed to.
Because partway along, actually, it's enough. It's enough. You know, if I'm making a meal, okay, I can put a few more spices and herbs in the stew, and then it's enough.
It's good. It doesn't have to do any more, don't have to do any more. I can put some flowers in the house, and then that's enough flowers now.
I don't have to have flowers on every single surface. I can have a conversation with somebody on the phone. We don't have to stay on the phone until we've discussed every single thing.
And every feeling in our hearts, you know, to the nth degree, we can reach a point where we go, that's enough for now, and leave it. And I think that's, for me, often, that's been a struggle, because you're getting into it, you're enjoying it, you're loving it, and just kind of keep going beyond the point where it's enough. And another thing around it is, you go to a party, and reach a point where you go, right, that's enough.
I've had enough to drink, or whatever else one is consuming. I've danced enough. I've flirted enough.
I've collected enough phone numbers, whatever it might be. I've posed enough. You know, whatever it is that you're doing at the party, and you go, that's enough.
I'm going to go now, rather than overdoing it. And then it kind of goes weird. That overdoing it, and then it goes weird.
I know it used to know, I used to go clubbing. And one way that you know, you've never done that is, if you're still there, when they turn the lights on to clean up. And then suddenly, you can see all these beautiful people that you've been with all night.
They look terrible, the makeup is running, the mascara, everyone's exhausted, they're sweaty, a lot of them are drunk, you know, and it's just a revolting shower of humanity that's suddenly revealed. At that point, you know, you stayed too long. You should have lit out about 20 minutes ago.
So I think enoughness is a really, the thing, what is enough is such a good question. And I think it's a question that needs to be asked over and over and over and over again, we can't get a definition right. I now know what is enough for the rest of my life.
No, you don't. You might know what is enough in this moment. But then tomorrow, in the next half hour, next week, something different will be enough.
And, you know, it could be in a relationship, either is enough. It's done, we're done. We've fulfilled the purpose of this relationship.
We're done. Now, that's hard to do. And then there's another person involved.
But I think this is a really, really good one. I think it's an ongoing question. What do you think, Roy? We're learning a bit more about catching whether enough phone numbers for flirting.
I think, like, as you say, the cooking, you know, sometimes just be present and, you know, enough is enough. I like when you said that. For me, it's sometimes no matter what I'm doing, I kind of know when I've had enough.
Like, I start early. I'm an early bird. It can be four, five, six.
Don't set an alarm clock. I'm working away. And there's times I take a nap during the day because I know I have enough.
I'm not firing also. I need a little break. I need a little nap to recharge the batteries.
But usually in the evening as well, usually it's around six. Sometimes I can go on to eight or whatever. And there's some days that I can go on to 10 and get things.
But I know myself, I have enough. It doesn't matter if I have critical items or whatever. I go, no, enough.
And I'm okay with stepping away. I'm not beating myself up. I'm not sitting down just if I'm just going to relax and maybe watch a show or read a book, whatever I'm doing, I'm not thinking, oh, I should be up there.
Because when I say enough, enough, and that goes on to, I can restart the next day. And we'd be comfortable with that. Because I think when you're not able to say enough, you start beating yourself up.
Even though we're limited, we all have limited. We've all a certain amount of time in a day. And I think we're all optimistic in how much we're going to achieve.
And then we realize when we're crossing off the things or highlighting the things off our list, we're kind of going, all right, that's physically not impossible. Impossible to actually get done what I was planning. I thought I was Superman, but I obviously am not.
But I think be comfortable with saying enough and that it's okay. Yeah, absolutely right. Absolutely right.
So what do you think? What comes to mind with that question for yourself? So be sure to give us a thumbs up, five star rating, maybe share with three friends or two or one, share with anybody that helps. Anything is enough. Exactly.
Not zero, one can be enough. Until the next episode, take care. Take care.
