#23: Master Hypnotist Mike Mandel (50 Years) on Ego States, Parts Work, and the Architecture of Mind.

WEBVTT
00:00:17.120 --> 00:00:19.760
Hello, welcome back, meeting seekers.
00:00:19.760 --> 00:00:29.359
Today I am very excited to introduce you to world-renowned hypnotist and hypnosis teacher Mike Mandel.
00:00:29.359 --> 00:00:36.880
If you heard our last episode with trauma expert Joanne Tuomley, you heard us talk about the power of hypnosis.
00:00:36.880 --> 00:00:43.759
Hypnosis is ancient, thousands of years old, and it shows up everywhere that ideas take root.
00:00:43.759 --> 00:00:46.320
Hypnotic principles are at work.
00:00:46.320 --> 00:00:52.320
That's in therapy, in politics, in advertising, in everyday conversation.
00:00:52.320 --> 00:00:56.560
Mike Van Beltel has been hypnotizing people for over 50 years.
00:00:56.560 --> 00:01:00.960
He has performed on stage hundreds of times.
00:01:00.960 --> 00:01:13.359
He's worked with police and first responders, and he's built an amazing hypnosis academy in Toronto and trained over 10,000 students, including me.
00:01:13.359 --> 00:01:24.400
In this episode, we explore what hypnosis is, how trance works, how hypnotic language shapes experience.
00:01:24.400 --> 00:01:31.599
At the beginning, Mike starts with a brief party trick hypnosis forgetting experience.
00:01:31.599 --> 00:01:32.959
So pay attention.
00:01:32.959 --> 00:01:35.680
The more you pay attention, the more this will work on you.
00:01:35.680 --> 00:01:39.840
And then at the end of the episode, we unpack how he did it.
00:01:39.840 --> 00:01:45.519
And then during the episode, we explore so many different interesting aspects of hypnosis.
00:01:45.519 --> 00:01:56.719
We explore ego states and draw really interesting parallels between ego state work in hypnosis and parts work in IFS.
00:01:56.719 --> 00:02:26.479
We are going to hear a concise history of hypnosis and the evolution of two different sides of the hypnosis spectrum, one being direct sleep now, the powerful hypnotist model, and the other indirect, using hypnotic language to induce trance and to create hypnotic effects in a much more subtle way.
00:02:26.479 --> 00:02:30.319
We're also going to hear about how hypnosis can be used to treat pain.
00:02:30.319 --> 00:02:37.280
Mike has some amazing examples, how it can treat inflammation and stop bleeding at times.
00:02:37.280 --> 00:02:50.319
And then we're going to talk about how all of this applies to meaning and how having various different models of the mind is extremely helpful for having a flexible and effective approach to life.
00:02:50.319 --> 00:02:54.319
I am so excited to share this conversation with you.
00:02:54.319 --> 00:03:00.719
Without further ado, here is my conversation with master hypnotist Mike Mandel.
00:03:00.719 --> 00:03:06.960
I am so excited to have you here.
00:03:06.960 --> 00:03:13.840
Just to put our conversation into context a little bit, I did your online hypnosis training.
00:03:13.840 --> 00:03:17.120
I did your in-person training.
00:03:17.120 --> 00:03:29.919
It really hit me at an important point in my life where you really helped in terms of sort of to get off screens, follow your curiosity, just learn, learn, learn.
00:03:29.919 --> 00:03:32.159
You are amazingly inspirational.
00:03:32.159 --> 00:03:36.800
And so I'm really excited about our conversation today.
00:03:36.800 --> 00:03:39.599
And let me just start with welcome.
00:03:39.599 --> 00:03:46.960
Just to sort of let people know who you are, I will read a little blurb from ChatGPT.
00:03:46.960 --> 00:03:55.520
And part of why I'm doing this is because I want to talk to you about models of the mind, meaning, hypnosis.
00:03:55.520 --> 00:04:03.520
And for me, AI has helped me sort of come up new ways of thinking about our mind and how we create meaning.
00:04:03.520 --> 00:04:06.639
So here's what ChatGPT has to say about you.
00:04:06.639 --> 00:04:14.960
So Mike Mandel is one of the world's leading hypnotists with over 50 years of experience in hypnosis, NLP, and personal development.
00:04:14.960 --> 00:04:23.920
He's widely regarded as a master of neo-Ericksonian hypnosis, a modern, flexible approach to creating change through language and suggestion.
00:04:23.920 --> 00:04:32.000
Mike has taught thousands of students worldwide, blending his deep expertise with humor and storytelling to make hypnosis accessible and transformative.
00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:42.959
As a gifted teacher, author, and co-host of the Brain Software podcast, Mike is renowned for his ability to simplify complex ideas and inspire personal growth.
00:04:42.959 --> 00:04:50.000
So today we will explore his groundbreaking work and how hypnosis can help us uncover meaning and reshape our lives.
00:04:50.319 --> 00:04:50.639
Wow.
00:04:50.639 --> 00:04:51.199
That's amazing.
00:04:51.199 --> 00:04:52.480
Thank you, ChatGPT.
00:04:52.480 --> 00:04:54.160
You get your 20 bucks.
00:04:54.720 --> 00:04:57.360
Oh yeah, you're you're a member, you're you're a paying member.
00:04:57.360 --> 00:05:00.240
I'm still a free, free GPT user.
00:05:00.720 --> 00:05:01.360
I'll tell you, Dr.
00:05:01.360 --> 00:05:02.399
Dirk, it's fantastic.
00:05:02.399 --> 00:05:12.959
I I have a paid membership and I built a GPT, I call it Doctor Science, and it has PhD level, understand, in it's a doctor of medicine and a veterinarian and a chiropractor and an osteopath.
00:05:12.959 --> 00:05:19.279
And it has PhD levels in gemology, meteorology, astral, you know, solar, solar radiation.
00:05:19.279 --> 00:05:22.879
I mean, everything you can conceivably think of that I thought of.
00:05:22.879 --> 00:05:28.399
And the ability to get a scientific answer really, really quickly is just a wonderful thing.
00:05:28.639 --> 00:05:30.160
It's mind-blowing, right?
00:05:30.160 --> 00:05:33.199
And um so yeah, so let's get into that.
00:05:33.199 --> 00:05:38.720
But to start us off, I would love it if you do a little demo.
00:05:38.720 --> 00:05:42.959
And there's this sort of party trick, parlor trick for getting.
00:05:42.959 --> 00:05:46.959
And I would love it if you could do that demo, and then we can unpack it at the end.
00:05:46.959 --> 00:05:47.839
Okay, sure.
00:05:47.839 --> 00:05:49.680
Give you a bit of hypnotic energy here.
00:05:49.839 --> 00:05:53.120
And first of all, I have to I have to show you.
00:05:53.120 --> 00:05:59.439
This is my brick from Milton Ericsson's house when it was when it was knocked down to build a parking lot, as in the Joni Mitchell song.
00:05:59.439 --> 00:06:00.399
It literally was.
00:06:00.399 --> 00:06:02.240
And it's signed by Elizabeth Erickson.
00:06:02.240 --> 00:06:03.360
One of my students got me that.
00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:07.759
I thought it was a joke, and I saw a box in it and said, Oh, it's from Ericsson, so huh?
00:06:07.759 --> 00:06:08.480
I nearly threw it out.
00:06:08.480 --> 00:06:10.959
I got home and I saw it was from the Ericsson Foundation in Phoenix.
00:06:10.959 --> 00:06:12.079
So I went, whoa, hang on.
00:06:12.079 --> 00:06:14.160
And then realized there was a plaque on it I hadn't seen.
00:06:14.160 --> 00:06:15.680
It was on the obverse side.
00:06:15.920 --> 00:06:17.600
I've said little chills.
00:06:17.600 --> 00:06:22.959
I uh yes, some people won't know yet who Milton Erickson is.
00:06:22.959 --> 00:06:24.480
By the end of our conversation, they will know.
00:06:24.480 --> 00:06:26.240
But yeah, that's a big deal.
00:06:26.560 --> 00:06:32.480
Well, let's just address what you what you asked me a minute ago because Ericsson was the foremost hypnotist I think who's ever lived.
00:06:32.480 --> 00:06:43.680
And although he started extremely directive in his hypnosis, do this, do that, you're feeling this, you're not feeling that, he began to use language as a means to cause people to ebb and flow into trance states.
00:06:43.680 --> 00:07:08.560
And it could be done so effortlessly that the unconscious mind of the person listening will draw from the language itself, connecting it to their own beliefs, their reality tunnels, and their structure of how they think the universe works, insofar as the unconscious is taking in the information at a level below conscious awareness and is able to process much larger amounts of information, which enables the person to drift into trance faster and easier than any recognition that they're even doing so.
00:07:08.560 --> 00:07:15.600
Now, the second important thing about it is this happens as soon as we start talking because language is in and of itself hypnotic.
00:07:15.600 --> 00:07:18.879
And the third important thing is, of course, I am doing it now.
00:07:18.879 --> 00:07:22.000
And you can forget the first important thing right now.
00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:23.759
That's right.
00:07:23.759 --> 00:07:27.759
And I say to your viewers, what else have you just forgotten?
00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:28.800
I think it's important.
00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:39.920
The more you focus on the thing, the more you try to find it, you'll notice there's a lacuna in your mind, and it's growing as you try to find that.
00:07:39.920 --> 00:07:42.160
Just try to find that try.
00:07:42.160 --> 00:07:43.199
Well done, Doc.
00:07:43.199 --> 00:07:43.600
Well done.
00:07:43.600 --> 00:07:45.120
Somebody was clearly paying attention.
00:07:45.120 --> 00:07:45.519
Nice.
00:07:45.519 --> 00:07:47.600
Try paying attention in class.
00:07:47.600 --> 00:07:56.800
Yeah, no, you blew my mind on the on the online course kind of with that, and I re-watched that video a bunch of times.
00:07:56.800 --> 00:08:00.560
And so that's a fun thing, and and we'll unpack that in a bit.
00:08:00.560 --> 00:08:17.199
But turning to models of the mind, in this podcast series, I'm now coming out of a series on internal family systems therapy, which is basically a therapy that's that sort of exploded in popularity.
00:08:17.199 --> 00:08:21.839
Many of the originators were ego state hypnosis people.
00:08:21.839 --> 00:08:31.839
And it basically says, we don't have one mind, we have many minds that are working in parallel and interacting with each other.
00:08:31.839 --> 00:08:36.320
And this is, to me, this in retrospect, it's kind of obvious.
00:08:36.320 --> 00:08:49.200
It's sort of you, and and but if you think about AI, you can't build one computer that's gonna be the PhD of all those things that you're talking about.
00:08:49.200 --> 00:08:56.799
To have a powerful computing system, you have multiple different sort of conscious entities that are working in parallel and able to interact.
00:08:56.799 --> 00:09:00.960
And our mind, I think, is structured like that.
00:09:00.960 --> 00:09:13.440
So we have these multiple different, if there's an inner conflict, a part of me wants one thing, a part of me wants so there's multiple different minds or conscious entities, and then there's sort of a seat of awareness.
00:09:13.440 --> 00:09:22.000
And so certain schemas or parts of ourselves can sort of take agency, take over our conscious center.
00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:26.399
So what's your working model of the mind?
00:09:27.200 --> 00:09:28.639
My working model of the mind, Dr.
00:09:28.639 --> 00:09:31.039
Dirk, is one of multiple layers.
00:09:31.039 --> 00:09:46.720
So I can reduce it to the simplicity of conscious versus unconscious, insofar as if we're looking at George Miller's work from the 60s, you know, the conscious awareness, some people say it's not true, but it seems to work, is basically magic number seven plus or minus two pieces of information kept in the mind at the time.
00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:50.879
Whereas the unconscious is maybe three to twenty million bits of information per second.
00:09:50.879 --> 00:09:59.600
And people who doubt the existence of the unconscious, uh, it was a question if they're running their heart valve synchronization consciously, you know, or 500 liver enzymes.
00:09:59.600 --> 00:10:03.360
And people realize this is happening flawlessly below the level of their awareness.
00:10:03.360 --> 00:10:04.159
But I do agree.
00:10:04.159 --> 00:10:13.600
I I've never really looked at the family model so much because my understanding, and I might be completely off here, is it seems to assign a uniform different role to different states.
00:10:13.600 --> 00:10:16.320
And my experience has been the opposite of that.
00:10:16.320 --> 00:10:30.000
It I do agree, going right back to Paul Faderin, who was a compatriot of Freud, and then Watkins and Watkins, husband and wife psychologists, and then probably the greatest expert on ego states alive today is Gordon Emerson, and an American psychologist living in Australia.
00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:33.919
I interviewed Emerson for an hour, and it was it was great because he's one of my heroes.
00:10:33.919 --> 00:10:48.080
And he comes at it just in such an interesting way, and he's the one who really got me thinking about these different sub-personalities that are digital, so that we only have one connected to our prefrontal cortex at any at any given time.
00:10:48.080 --> 00:10:58.799
The others are in the background, and they're either close to the surface and listening to everything we're saying, like ours are right now, or the the model of a bungalow works so well.
00:10:58.799 --> 00:11:02.000
And this this has served me well as my model of working with people.
00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:06.159
You have I'll give you two different models that are both brief and useful.
00:11:06.159 --> 00:11:15.519
The bungalow model says you have a bungalow with a basement, with a rec room down there, and the one the main floor has only one door to the outside world.
00:11:15.519 --> 00:11:22.960
Only one ego state, subpersonality, part, resource state, whatever you want to call it, is the one that becomes executive at any given moment.
00:11:22.960 --> 00:11:29.600
And that's the one that's holding the door open, interacting with the world through our own perceptions, observations, and so on, beliefs.
00:11:29.600 --> 00:11:34.799
But any of the ones on the main floor can come up to the door and they can take over and answer the door if they want to.
00:11:34.799 --> 00:11:35.759
They do it regularly.
00:11:35.759 --> 00:11:38.080
There's about five to fifteen of those.
00:11:38.080 --> 00:11:48.320
But down in the basement, we have other subparts, sub-personalities that have some of them haven't become executive for years, but there might be a hundred to a hundred and fifty down there.
00:11:48.320 --> 00:11:52.399
And they can generally come upstairs if they need to and take the executive.
00:11:52.399 --> 00:11:56.320
And of course, a stronger ego state can push a weaker one out of the executive.
00:11:56.320 --> 00:12:07.519
Like when someone suddenly is triggered by something that sets them off, then the stronger, angry ego state will push the nice one out and get into a raging argument with someone because that's what it does.
00:12:07.519 --> 00:12:13.440
But then off from the basement, we have what I love to love the description is a bomb shelter.
00:12:13.440 --> 00:12:20.159
And in the bomb shelter are the terrified, vaded ego states, as Emerson calls it, invaded by fear, anger, sadness, trauma.
00:12:20.159 --> 00:12:24.159
And they are in there because they need help and they're afraid to come out.
00:12:24.159 --> 00:12:34.480
And so, what so many problems are us connecting with vaded ego states and healing them, showing them that they're okay now, that they can get support, and getting ego states to talk to each other, to interact.
00:12:34.480 --> 00:12:36.559
Some haven't spoken to each other in years.
00:12:36.559 --> 00:12:37.840
So that's the one model.
00:12:37.840 --> 00:12:44.720
Here's the other one I'm liking almost as much now the idea of a stage with a podium, and the audience is the outside world.
00:12:44.720 --> 00:12:51.759
And one ego state, which everyone is standing at the podium speaking, that's the one dealing with the audience of the outside world at any given moment.
00:12:51.759 --> 00:12:58.000
But in the wings, hiding in the background, there's others behind the curtains, and they're ready to jump in and take over anytime.
00:12:58.000 --> 00:13:00.960
That corresponds to the upper floor of the bungalow.
00:13:00.960 --> 00:13:07.039
And then maybe further in the wings, out of sight, there's others that are sort of listening, maybe not listening that much.
00:13:07.039 --> 00:13:09.120
Some might even be in the audience listening.
00:13:09.120 --> 00:13:11.120
They have no intention of taking the podium.
00:13:11.120 --> 00:13:15.039
But then there's the dressing room, and in the dressing room are the ones that do I have to go on stage?
00:13:15.039 --> 00:13:16.080
Ah, I don't want to do that.
00:13:16.080 --> 00:13:18.000
That's the Vedu ones in the background.
00:13:18.000 --> 00:13:25.679
So this works nicely because the idea is, and this is going to tie into what you just asked me, uh, is rather circumlocar, but I think it'll work.
00:13:25.679 --> 00:13:34.399
The aspect of Emerson's work that I love is he sees the ego states, the subpersonalities, as resources, not as liabilities.
00:13:34.399 --> 00:13:37.679
And that is such a beautiful and powerful reframe.
00:13:37.679 --> 00:13:40.639
So we have states that are good at certain things.
00:13:40.639 --> 00:13:46.480
And when we run into problems is when they're vaded or when they're given a job they don't want to do and they're not good at it.
00:13:46.480 --> 00:13:48.720
Can you just say what um vated means?
00:13:48.720 --> 00:13:50.320
Yeah, vaded.
00:13:50.320 --> 00:13:51.679
Invaded as a short form.
00:13:51.679 --> 00:13:55.759
It's a coined term by Emerson, invaded by fear, anger, sadness, and trauma.
00:13:55.759 --> 00:13:56.799
Fast F-A-S-T.
00:13:56.799 --> 00:13:58.559
That pretty well covers everything.
00:13:58.559 --> 00:14:08.159
And when we heal them and help them process these emotions that are locked up almost like in a time capsule, you have a traumatized ego state that has PTSD.
00:14:08.159 --> 00:14:12.639
It's always feeling bad, but you don't know it's always feeling bad until it becomes executive.
00:14:12.639 --> 00:14:14.399
Then you feel the emotions.
00:14:14.399 --> 00:14:16.320
And here's what Emerson said.
00:14:16.320 --> 00:14:18.559
So here's the model that has freaked me out.
00:14:18.559 --> 00:14:30.480
I said to him, when I started studying this, NLP parts, first of all, in 1992, 93, I thought, it seems to me that a lot of things are parts issues, ego state issues.
00:14:30.480 --> 00:14:34.879
And then as I kept looking at it, it seemed that most things were ego state issues.
00:14:34.879 --> 00:14:43.519
And then when I was a therapist from 1993 to 2000, as well as doing the other things, I came to the conclusion that everything is an ego state issue without exception.
00:14:43.519 --> 00:14:44.639
And Emerson said yes.
00:14:44.639 --> 00:14:45.759
He said, You're absolutely right.
00:14:45.759 --> 00:14:46.080
Everything.
00:14:46.080 --> 00:14:48.080
And you can't think of one where it isn't.
00:14:48.080 --> 00:14:55.679
If you have an argument with your wife on an ongoing basis, you have an ego state that is doing that arguing and using the same strategy over and over and over.
00:14:55.679 --> 00:15:02.000
You know, what's the the line I I continued to apply the correct solution, which didn't work despite the correct solution.
00:15:02.000 --> 00:15:03.759
So humans do that.
00:15:03.759 --> 00:15:05.279
But here's what he said.
00:15:05.279 --> 00:15:08.399
That blew my mind, and I've never got my head around this since.
00:15:08.399 --> 00:15:10.639
And then I'll compare it with human given's theory.
00:15:10.639 --> 00:15:10.960
Dr.
00:15:10.960 --> 00:15:16.080
Emerson said, what if every ego state has its own unconscious mind?
00:15:16.080 --> 00:15:18.080
I just went, oh no.
00:15:18.080 --> 00:15:22.320
I'm intempering to simplify the model, it might be more complex.
00:15:22.639 --> 00:15:27.919
Holy cow, this overlaps so much with IFS.
00:15:27.919 --> 00:15:34.399
And basically the idea is that there are two types of parts.
00:15:34.399 --> 00:15:37.600
There are involved in psychopathology.
00:15:37.600 --> 00:15:47.120
There might be some kind of a part that knows how to swim or knows how to ride a bike or you know, little programs that sort of are automatic and can help.
00:15:47.120 --> 00:15:50.240
But the idea is that there none of these parts are bad.
00:15:50.240 --> 00:15:53.759
Some of them are traumatized, and those he calls exiles.
00:15:53.759 --> 00:15:58.080
Those are things we want to lock up in the basement or push out of awareness.
00:15:58.080 --> 00:16:02.960
And then there are protective parts, and there are two types of protective parts.
00:16:02.960 --> 00:16:06.879
One type are before-the-fact protectors.
00:16:06.879 --> 00:16:08.399
These are called managers.
00:16:08.399 --> 00:16:16.320
So I'm going to be really prepared and study a lot and do all these proactive things to make sure my wounded parts don't get triggered.
00:16:16.320 --> 00:16:21.360
And then there are after-the-fact protectors, and uh those are called firefighters.
00:16:21.360 --> 00:16:38.720
So once my exile is is triggered and I'm feeling shame because I screwed up, then the you know, the drinking part will come in or the uh sex part or some some extreme, and the idea is that that part doesn't really care about consequences, but it just has to get doused.
00:16:38.720 --> 00:16:41.440
And so none of these parts are bad.
00:16:41.440 --> 00:16:48.159
They're all have some kind of a positive intention, even though in the world they might be creating all kinds of problems.
00:16:48.159 --> 00:16:53.120
And so the idea is instead of like killing off our firefighters, we want to make friends.
00:16:53.120 --> 00:17:21.119
And what happens when we do that, when we're kind to our parts, when we recognize that there's a positive intention, then this quality, this brain state emerges, which is not a part, which he calls, Richard Schwartz calls self, capital S self, which is this optimal quality of being compassionate, confident, creative, curious, having perspective, clear-minded.
00:17:21.119 --> 00:17:27.119
So there's this optimal brain state, which he sees as kind of a conductor.
00:17:27.119 --> 00:17:41.119
So we have these parts that are all have their roles and might be battling with each other, but there's there's kind of this clear-minded home sort of optimal state, and that has sort of this healing quality.
00:17:41.119 --> 00:17:59.680
If we can sort of connect the wounded ego state with the compassionate energy of sort of this big brain state, which which I think overlaps well with your model, it overlaps well with Dan Siegel's model of the mind, where he talks about sort of rigidity versus flexibility.
00:17:59.680 --> 00:18:05.759
There's sort of an optimal brain state of maximal integration and flexibility.
00:18:05.759 --> 00:18:09.440
Yeah, this is really fun to talk because there's there's so much uh overlap.
00:18:09.440 --> 00:18:16.400
And in a lot of the the Watkins and Watkins and all the you know, the ego state hypnosis people, though, those talk to the early IFS people.
00:18:16.400 --> 00:18:18.319
They're they're all trained in hypnosis.
00:18:18.319 --> 00:18:22.400
I don't think Richard Schwartz was, but he he had to know about that stuff too.
00:18:22.400 --> 00:18:23.039
Yeah.
00:18:23.039 --> 00:18:24.400
You think too, yeah.
00:18:24.640 --> 00:18:26.880
That's interesting because there's a huge overlap here.
00:18:26.880 --> 00:18:30.000
Uh the some people talk about centrum and these other things.
00:18:30.000 --> 00:18:31.680
The way I look at it is this.
00:18:31.680 --> 00:18:36.240
And I agree with John Grinder, who said the test of any model is its usefulness.
00:18:36.240 --> 00:18:38.960
It doesn't matter whether it's true or not, does it work for you?
00:18:38.960 --> 00:18:46.799
And what I found really useful when I could not break down whatever barriers to healing were happening, working with someone with ego state work.
00:18:46.799 --> 00:18:57.440
Um, the idea that the superficial ones, the ones in the bungalow main floor, this may be 10 to 15, this one that tells you you're tired, one that tells you you're hungry, one that makes you drive carefully.
00:18:57.440 --> 00:18:59.839
I mean, this these different ones that come out every day.
00:18:59.839 --> 00:19:11.759
We can get to the ones in the basement sometimes without hypnosis, but hypnosis appears to be the express train to get to the wounded and the baited ones and some of the ones in the basement.
00:19:11.759 --> 00:19:17.039
Without hypnosis, without the trance, it's impossible to isolate them or very difficult.
00:19:17.039 --> 00:19:21.039
Emerson says, and I I love this, he's just such an interesting teacher.
00:19:21.039 --> 00:19:24.960
He said that ego states that, let me get this right.
00:19:24.960 --> 00:19:30.720
Um, he said, when you hypnotize someone, you get someone in a somnambulistic trance, whatever the heck that is, right?
00:19:30.720 --> 00:19:44.000
But if we let's presume the model is accurate, when we hypnotize someone, put them in a trance, the other ego states are asleep, which struck me as intriguing, that you're dealing with just the one in an uncontaminated way.
00:19:44.000 --> 00:19:50.400
So specifically, one would have to have a particularly robust trance in order to get this to work.
00:19:50.400 --> 00:19:58.480
Um, so in my case, the way I see the whole organization is the whole idea of highest wisdom, which we may be talking about the same thing.
00:19:58.480 --> 00:20:05.599
Highest wisdom has the best outcome for the person, ecology, not just staying alive, not just survival, but thriving.
00:20:05.599 --> 00:20:12.559
There is a nurturing aspect of highest wisdom to help the other states and to even extend then beyond to help other people.
00:20:12.559 --> 00:20:20.640
And when I've contacted highest wisdom working with people, it when I hit a deadlock, I've just said, there's a part of you that I call highest wisdom.
00:20:20.640 --> 00:20:29.920
Well, it's called that, and I'm not saying it, but it it has it is the only one that all of your parts, every one of your ego states respects and will listen to.
00:20:29.920 --> 00:20:32.799
And that's the one I'm summoning now because we want to fix this.
00:20:32.799 --> 00:20:34.559
And I have to honor everything.
00:20:34.559 --> 00:20:36.559
I'm never gonna bully ego states.
00:20:36.559 --> 00:20:39.440
I'm always building rapport and being non-judgmental and supportive.
00:20:39.440 --> 00:20:41.279
And then highest wisdom becomes executive.
00:20:41.279 --> 00:20:48.960
It typically takes about 45 to 60 seconds, but the voice I found has been nothing like the other person's voice.
00:20:48.960 --> 00:20:54.400
I dealt with a woman who was a therapist, a little woman, and she had some issues, and um, I couldn't crack it open.
00:20:54.400 --> 00:21:01.680
And I appealed to Highest Wisdom, and you would think the goddess Athena walked into the room to hear this thing speak.
00:21:01.680 --> 00:21:03.440
And that's how we sorted it out.
00:21:03.440 --> 00:21:15.440
She had a wounded ego state going back to six 18 months old in Germany that was put in a crib with the window open and no blanket by a negligent aunt and uncle, and she was freezing and terrified.
00:21:15.440 --> 00:21:20.559
And this would become executive, and she'd cry and scream without warning at times, even as she as she was a therapist.
00:21:20.559 --> 00:21:25.759
Highest wisdom assigned an ego state that would love to look after this baby.
00:21:25.759 --> 00:21:28.880
Not only will do it, but it has to want to do it.
00:21:28.880 --> 00:21:30.079
That's the power.
00:21:30.079 --> 00:21:34.480
And said it would look after her forever, so she'd never be cold and never be frightened again.
00:21:34.480 --> 00:21:36.000
Bingo, everything changed.
00:21:36.000 --> 00:21:43.680
And she described it to me was this large, powerful Scottish woman, all in tartan, came up, wrapped her in a blank, you're late.
00:21:43.680 --> 00:21:44.880
Last, I'll look after you.
00:21:44.880 --> 00:21:46.480
Nothing will get to you when I'm here.
00:21:46.480 --> 00:21:47.759
Hugged her and held her.
00:21:47.759 --> 00:21:48.960
And that was that was the healing.
00:21:48.960 --> 00:21:49.759
Is that remarkable?
00:21:50.079 --> 00:21:50.640
Holy cow.
00:21:50.640 --> 00:21:52.720
I'm getting chills as you're talking.
00:21:52.720 --> 00:21:58.319
This is this is so similar to what happens in in IFS.
00:21:58.319 --> 00:22:09.920
And in this show, I'm really sort of traveling through different healing communities looking for conciliance where different kinds of knowledge come together.
00:22:09.920 --> 00:22:13.440
And and when I find that, it it's really exciting to me.
00:22:13.440 --> 00:22:30.079
And I feel like what you're really describing is this huge overlap is optimal, big brain state that's healing, and then having this caretaking, come take care of that infant and in and show up and want to do that.
00:22:30.079 --> 00:22:31.839
And huge healing happened.
00:22:31.839 --> 00:22:41.599
I think when people are just curious and follow the lead of our clients, this model somehow emerges or very similar.
00:22:42.079 --> 00:22:42.799
It does, doesn't it?
00:22:42.799 --> 00:22:43.200
Yeah.
00:22:43.200 --> 00:22:44.799
It's um it's interesting.
00:22:44.799 --> 00:23:02.160
And the whole idea that these ego states that they are a family, and the more we can bring in integration between them, when we're doing that, and I think that's integration through any method, is connecting ego states, connecting subpersonalities with actual neural pathways so that they're able to communicate with each other easily.
00:23:02.160 --> 00:23:03.359
Now, I'll give you an example.
00:23:03.359 --> 00:23:12.240
When I dealt with OCD, and when I had the practice, it was exactly the same as when I would deal with any kind of addictive behavior, because I just framed OCD as an addiction.
00:23:12.240 --> 00:23:13.279
What does it serve?
00:23:13.279 --> 00:23:14.480
What is the purpose?
00:23:14.480 --> 00:23:19.119
And I uniformly found out the person felt better when they did the behavior.
00:23:19.119 --> 00:23:24.880
So I look at it from an ego state model, and we're looking at a retro avoidance ego state.
00:23:24.880 --> 00:23:27.200
So we have we have a vated ego state at some level.
00:23:27.200 --> 00:23:29.359
It's invaded with fear, anger, sadness, trauma.
00:23:29.359 --> 00:23:32.400
It might be one that went through horrendous grief as I did.
00:23:32.400 --> 00:23:47.599
Um, other people go through different things, and that ego state does not want to become executive, does not want to connect to the prefrontal cortex, because when it does, all those negative emotions are felt in the body, and they have to be felt in the body for it to be executive.
00:23:47.599 --> 00:23:56.960
So what it does instead is it has a deal, either intentional or unintentional, with a an avoidance state that takes the executive to stop it feeling that.
00:23:56.960 --> 00:23:59.599
So do we see the same with smokers?
00:23:59.599 --> 00:24:02.240
You you just hide their cigarettes and watch what happens.
00:24:02.240 --> 00:24:05.359
And you get an anxious ego state, starts to become executive.
00:24:05.359 --> 00:24:07.119
That's the one that needs to be healed.
00:24:07.119 --> 00:24:08.400
The same with alcohol.
00:24:08.400 --> 00:24:16.160
If you if you heal the ego state that has the issues, the vaded one, make it executive, let it feel it in the body, clear the emotions.
00:24:16.160 --> 00:24:17.759
Then guess what happens?
00:24:17.759 --> 00:24:19.440
No ego state jumps in anymore.
00:24:19.440 --> 00:24:22.079
There's no need to do the behavior because it's healed.
00:24:22.079 --> 00:24:24.400
It is absolutely fascinating stuff.
00:24:24.400 --> 00:24:41.519
In fact, when I do my master hypnosis training in Toronto, the people who've already gone through the training, we a substantial part of the five days is ego state work and showing them how to communicate with their own through different methods I've created and to clear their own stuff because I think none of us arrive at perfection until eternity.
00:24:41.519 --> 00:24:49.440
And but I think it's incumbent upon us to become clean vessels, as transparent as we can, to deal with our own stuff.
00:24:49.440 --> 00:24:50.720
And I'm certainly not there.
00:24:50.720 --> 00:24:54.960
I haven't arrived, but my wife will tell you I'm better than I was 10 years ago, and I'm better than I was last year.
00:24:54.960 --> 00:24:57.599
And I want to say hopefully I'm better than I was yesterday.
00:24:57.599 --> 00:24:59.279
We allow the healing to take place.
00:24:59.279 --> 00:25:11.599
We must be willing, maybe to look at our own shadow, the parts of what we don't like, to look into that, into that turmoil, that maelstrom, that abyss, and see the darkness within us that needs to be healed and acknowledged.
00:25:11.599 --> 00:25:15.759
And until we push it as we stop pushing it aside, we never really get any crazy.
00:25:16.079 --> 00:25:16.160
Right.
00:25:16.160 --> 00:25:21.359
It's really important to sort of look into our shadow with kindness and compassion.
00:25:21.359 --> 00:25:27.519
And and that sort of op unlocks the healing potential.
00:25:27.519 --> 00:25:50.000
And so we haven't yet said what hypnosis is, and and uh uh just sort of staying with this parts model or ego state model, how I'm sort of imagining it is that we have kind of this critical part or sort of a defensive part, and our brain doesn't want to change.
00:25:50.000 --> 00:25:55.440
Like there's a lot of our brain that is invested in not changing, which makes sense, right?
00:25:55.440 --> 00:25:58.559
We don't want to just willy-nilly change.
00:25:58.559 --> 00:26:10.640
And so what hypnosis might be doing is allowing us to sort of turn off that that guard that's preventing change.
00:26:10.640 --> 00:26:21.759
And and once the hypnotist has that rapport, has the prestige, has trust of the system, then that guard kind of relaxes.
00:26:21.759 --> 00:26:27.519
And now there's this potential to go into the basement and connect.
00:26:27.519 --> 00:26:32.319
And and hopefully the hypnotist is sort of kind and well-intentioned, and that's going to be healing.
00:26:32.319 --> 00:26:39.359
But that you know, it could go a different way if that person is some kind of a you know, a sinister guru or something like that.
00:26:39.759 --> 00:26:41.119
Oh, yeah, for sure, Doc.
00:26:41.119 --> 00:26:42.319
That's that's for sure.
00:26:42.319 --> 00:26:50.559
In fact, if you look back at George Esther Brooks, who wrote his book, Hypnotism during Second World War, and Anthony Jacqueline, my friend and colleague, calls it a work of fiction.
00:26:50.559 --> 00:26:51.839
But it's it's interesting.
00:26:51.839 --> 00:26:53.759
But Esther Brooks was Canadian.
00:26:53.759 --> 00:26:59.440
He was from Alberta, and he became head of psychology at Colgate University in the U.S.
00:26:59.440 --> 00:27:00.559
But he worked with M.T.
00:27:00.559 --> 00:27:02.960
Orney, or Orn as some pronounce it.
00:27:02.960 --> 00:27:14.000
And uh, anyway, the two of them were, and then Cameron Ewing out of Montreal, they were attempting to create hypnotic careers who could memorize information in a trance, not have it consciously available.
00:27:14.000 --> 00:27:20.880
And only when a binary signal was given, they'd go behind the iron curtain and so on back in the early times of the Cold War.
00:27:20.880 --> 00:27:34.720
And the idea being they would only be able to regurgitate this information in a binary way if the it was a certain person who hypnotized them, had to be a certain guy they knew, and then they had to give a certain code word, and the two would get to regurgitate this.
00:27:34.720 --> 00:27:38.160
The idea being, the intention was actually quite horrible.
00:27:38.160 --> 00:27:40.079
This became the MK Ultra program.
00:27:40.079 --> 00:27:46.559
And the whole concept, you know, you you and Cameron at McGill University of Montreal giving people doses of LSD without their knowledge.
00:27:46.559 --> 00:27:48.000
They gave people insulin shock.
00:27:48.000 --> 00:27:50.160
I mean, it was absolutely horrible what they did to human beings.
00:27:50.160 --> 00:27:52.559
It amounted to torture for their experiments.
00:27:52.559 --> 00:28:04.880
But the bottom line was they were attempting to create a Manchurian candidate, somebody who would kill and be, you know, able to be tortured and wouldn't know anything about it afterwards and not spout any information if they were captured.
00:28:04.880 --> 00:28:08.079
But they found it was impossible to do with hypnosis alone.
00:28:08.079 --> 00:28:14.480
That's why they had to fragment the personality with electroconvulsive shock and all these different things and traumatize people.
00:28:14.480 --> 00:28:21.200
Then when they did that, they were splitting off the different ego states from each other, and there were no neural pathways, I guess, between them.
00:28:21.200 --> 00:28:26.720
But I mean, it's it's horrendous what they were doing, but it was really based on ego states again, even then.
00:28:26.960 --> 00:28:28.319
Is there a book about this?
00:28:28.319 --> 00:28:30.640
This this is something I don't know anything about.
00:28:30.640 --> 00:28:32.480
It sounds horrible.
00:28:32.960 --> 00:28:36.240
And I will research it, I'll find you the best info on it.
00:28:36.240 --> 00:28:37.839
I probably have it in my library.
00:28:37.839 --> 00:28:38.559
Yeah.
00:28:38.559 --> 00:28:41.039
And yeah, I mean it is horrible.
00:28:41.039 --> 00:28:47.279
But on the good side of all this, have you seen um are you familiar with inner active cards?
00:28:47.839 --> 00:28:48.480
Yes.
00:28:48.480 --> 00:28:54.559
I feel like those that those are kind of IFS, the subpersonality.
00:28:54.559 --> 00:28:57.920
I I don't know if that comes from an I They're popular in IFS.
00:28:57.920 --> 00:29:00.480
I don't know if they come from IFS or from someplace else.
00:29:00.799 --> 00:29:06.480
I want to show you three things I've used for dealing with this sort of thing in when I had to practice uh 25 years ago.
00:29:06.480 --> 00:29:13.279
In fact, um on January 29th, that is my 50th anniversary of full-time hypnosis.
00:29:13.279 --> 00:29:14.079
Congratulations.
00:29:14.079 --> 00:29:20.480
It's my sixth, it'll be 60 years of doing hypnosis because I started in 1965, which is crazy.
00:29:20.480 --> 00:29:21.119
Thank you.
00:29:21.119 --> 00:29:23.039
Here, these are interactive cards.
00:29:23.039 --> 00:29:25.759
So these are getting a clear off, but these are wonderful.
00:29:25.759 --> 00:29:26.559
People want to look in.
00:29:26.559 --> 00:29:29.599
I think these are um fourth edition, the most up-to-date.
00:29:29.599 --> 00:29:38.000
I buy them from Cabisham Books in Toronto, which is I think the most um prolific purveyor of psychological and psychiatric books in the world.
00:29:38.000 --> 00:29:39.359
I mean, they really have that rep.
00:29:39.359 --> 00:29:41.119
But these are useful too.
00:29:41.119 --> 00:29:41.920
These are mythos.
00:29:41.920 --> 00:29:45.920
And and these photos.
00:29:45.920 --> 00:29:47.839
That's a good question.
00:29:47.839 --> 00:29:56.720
So all my master's students in the class get a deck of these, and we also work with uh Shivrul's pendulum and teach them to get very quick access to their unconscious.
00:29:56.720 --> 00:30:01.680
Then each one of them takes the entire deck of cards, looks At a card and said, Do I relate to this?
00:30:01.680 --> 00:30:02.319
Yes or no?
00:30:02.319 --> 00:30:02.880
No.
00:30:02.880 --> 00:30:04.079
Discard, discard.
00:30:04.079 --> 00:30:06.240
Oh, yeah, put that aside.
00:30:06.240 --> 00:30:09.119
So they put the all the ones they don't relate to back in the box.
00:30:09.119 --> 00:30:15.200
And I I typically put on, I like to put on some music with no words, just maybe something pensive, thoughtful piano.
00:30:15.200 --> 00:30:16.880
And I taught this in England, that's how we did it.
00:30:16.880 --> 00:30:19.119
People would sit all over the room on the floor and everything.
00:30:19.119 --> 00:30:24.480
We have a small group for the master class because I want to give them the personal attention because they've already gone through the training anyway.
00:30:24.480 --> 00:30:31.039
So now they have these maybe six to fifteen cards, whatever, that they relate to strongly.
00:30:31.039 --> 00:30:33.920
And I'll say, No, put them in front of me on the floor.
00:30:33.920 --> 00:30:35.279
Group them together.
00:30:35.279 --> 00:30:37.279
Oh yeah, these two, these two belong together.
00:30:37.279 --> 00:30:41.359
And they start to figure out the relationships between them and mapping their interactions.
00:30:41.359 --> 00:30:43.119
Are any of these problematic?
00:30:43.119 --> 00:30:44.079
Oh, this one.
00:30:44.079 --> 00:30:51.279
Okay, so take that card, look at it, and in your mind, talk to it, be very friendly, and trust your unconscious.
00:30:51.279 --> 00:30:52.480
What does it say to you?
00:30:52.480 --> 00:30:56.160
And these people are adroit by now going in and out of trances.
00:30:56.160 --> 00:30:57.440
The effects are phenomenal.
00:30:57.440 --> 00:31:07.920
So we've taken sort of a Jungian accessing these archetypes and accessing these different states just through um kind of a meditative, relaxed thing.
00:31:07.920 --> 00:31:10.160
But they got they've got self-hypnosis to go to.
00:31:10.160 --> 00:31:11.279
So that wham, right?
00:31:11.279 --> 00:31:13.200
And then they say afterwards, oh, the breakthroughs.
00:31:13.200 --> 00:31:14.079
This one told me this.
00:31:14.079 --> 00:31:16.400
I realize now why I was overeating all the time.
00:31:16.400 --> 00:31:22.640
And as our friend and colleague, excellent NLP trainer David Snyder says, the unconscious mind speaks first.
00:31:22.640 --> 00:31:24.480
It speaks very softly.
00:31:24.480 --> 00:31:27.759
You'll think you're making it up, and you'll want to edit it.
00:31:27.759 --> 00:31:30.079
And there's a couple more, but those really nail it.
00:31:30.079 --> 00:31:31.039
Quick breakthrough.
00:31:31.039 --> 00:31:33.599
So that's that's why I use the interactive cards with them.
00:31:33.599 --> 00:31:34.640
That's one way.
00:31:34.640 --> 00:31:45.039
And they can just take one card and keep it out for a while and keep it near them when they're working on their computer and just from time to time look at it and start to reinforce the bridge with it just by giving it the attention.
00:31:45.039 --> 00:31:46.960
It seems like intention does much.
00:31:46.960 --> 00:31:50.799
And just say for a minute, what is what is intention?
00:31:50.799 --> 00:31:57.039
Intention is not just wanting something to happen, but almost putting your will behind it.
00:31:57.039 --> 00:32:08.480
It was a Pisaguru who trained with Mesmer, and when he did a demonstration for the Parisian Freemasons, they said, Why is it that you can make this work on just about anyone?
00:32:08.480 --> 00:32:16.000
He said, Before I do mesmerism, which was primitive hypnosis, he said, I make a picture in my mind of what I want to have happen.
00:32:16.000 --> 00:32:21.759
And then I believe that that picture is true, and then I will it to happen, and it does.
00:32:21.759 --> 00:32:23.200
The intention is a will part.
00:32:23.200 --> 00:32:24.799
That's why I created the Mandel triangle.
00:32:24.799 --> 00:32:29.200
So you have an equilateral triangle with a C in the middle, which stands for calibration.
00:32:29.200 --> 00:32:33.599
You must be calibrating the person to see these shifts in their states and so on play across their face.
00:32:33.599 --> 00:32:35.519
You'll see it, hear it in their breathing, and so on.
00:32:35.519 --> 00:32:37.839
No one in a different ego state becomes executive.
00:32:37.839 --> 00:32:40.880
So working with the ego states like that.
00:32:40.880 --> 00:32:47.519
It seems like there's about a couple of dozen ways of getting to them, but doing it intentionally.
00:32:47.519 --> 00:32:49.759
Calibration is in the center.
00:32:49.759 --> 00:32:52.640
You're going to be congruent, meaning you're sending one consistent message.
00:32:52.640 --> 00:32:56.160
You're talking, okay, this is really going to work, and we're going to do no, it's okay.
00:32:56.160 --> 00:32:57.680
Here's what we're going to do next.
00:32:57.680 --> 00:32:59.599
I'm going to speak to that part of you.
00:32:59.599 --> 00:33:04.880
And we're congruent, friendly, open, supportive, and we're also confident.
00:33:04.880 --> 00:33:12.160
Confidence comes from congruence, but the third side is intention, which is really conviction, our conviction that it's going to work.
00:33:12.160 --> 00:33:15.200
And that gets you a long, long way with any of this stuff.
00:33:15.200 --> 00:33:22.720
In fact, it seems, and this is almost heretical, but it seems like sometimes the therapy is the least important thing.
00:33:22.720 --> 00:33:26.640
It's whether or not they like the therapist and follow the steps.
00:33:26.640 --> 00:33:28.160
It seems to be one of the elements.
00:33:28.559 --> 00:33:29.440
So just staying with it.
00:33:29.440 --> 00:33:44.960
So we have hypnosis and we're working on uh a definition, and there's you're explaining the Mandel triangle, and it and then I think we can tie that all into meaning.
00:33:44.960 --> 00:34:09.360
Um, and meaning being the story that that we create, that we we're always sort of we're getting all kinds of information coming in, light in our eyes, vibrations in our ears, and then we're assigning some kind of a story and meaning, and and that's what that's sort of the central drive in in us humans, according to Victor Frankel.
00:34:09.519 --> 00:34:12.960
And and I think Frankel is right, you know, the search for meaning.
00:34:12.960 --> 00:34:15.440
There's a man, he he survived the concentration camps, didn't he?
00:34:15.440 --> 00:34:15.760
Yes.
00:34:15.760 --> 00:34:18.320
And he came out and said he he was he was made stronger by it.
00:34:18.320 --> 00:34:22.000
He was going to make sure everybody knew it wasn't he wasn't crushed by it.
00:34:22.000 --> 00:34:31.199
And there's that thing, you know, there's working as a hypnotist and as a therapist for years, there's a huge difference between pain and suffering.
00:34:31.199 --> 00:34:35.679
Some people will frame something as pain, other people have the exact experience and it's suffering.
00:34:35.679 --> 00:34:38.239
I mean, it it depletes them, it enervates them.
00:34:38.239 --> 00:34:39.840
It just is terrible for them.
00:34:39.840 --> 00:34:43.920
And when we assign meaning, yeah, that changes everything, doesn't it?
00:34:43.920 --> 00:34:52.880
I like to say to my students or clients, it was like you have this immense tapestry, multicolored, and all we see is a stitch that we're working on at the time.
00:34:53.199 --> 00:34:54.880
This this is a big deal.
00:34:54.880 --> 00:35:00.559
I treat people who are in uh in pain, and uh it's hard.
00:35:00.559 --> 00:35:19.360
And uh so so I would love to hear a bit more about this and and pain versus suffering and how that relates to the meaning that we you know, it's the same sensory information coming in, the signal comes in, but then what we do with it is different.
00:35:19.360 --> 00:35:21.119
So, yeah, how do you think about this?
00:35:21.119 --> 00:35:22.559
How do you work with pain?
00:35:22.559 --> 00:35:24.400
It's the power of the reframe, isn't it?
00:35:24.559 --> 00:35:26.480
It it's I have I have constant pain.
00:35:26.480 --> 00:35:37.599
I've had it since I was 14 because a inept, I used to say sadistic, but he wasn't sadistic, he was just inept, an inept gym teacher got me to do a dive roll and a neck spring, which I could not do.
00:35:37.599 --> 00:35:42.639
I was a very frail, small kid, and I I got acute tortocolis from it.
00:35:42.639 --> 00:35:44.559
I was literally like this.
00:35:44.559 --> 00:35:53.119
I I almost almost broke my neck, and the damage it did to my cervical spine is such that now it does not support the muscles.
00:35:53.119 --> 00:35:56.559
The musculature is forced to support the cervical spine instead.
00:35:56.559 --> 00:36:03.360
So every day, from the moment I get up, there's pain in my neck, literal pain in my neck.
00:36:03.360 --> 00:36:06.000
But the wonderful thing is I've reframed it.
00:36:06.000 --> 00:36:10.960
It it reminds me I'm alive, and I I keep it in a compartment.
00:36:10.960 --> 00:36:14.000
So I don't even notice it unless I start talking about it now.
00:36:14.000 --> 00:36:19.599
It's reframed as a useful thing because now when I was working with clients, I don't work with them anymore.
00:36:19.599 --> 00:36:22.880
I would see a lot of people with chronic pain, but it was emotional pain.
00:36:22.880 --> 00:36:27.199
And that gave me a model to recognize we can turn it down so people don't suffer.
00:36:27.199 --> 00:36:31.199
They're aware of it, but it's not dragging them over the coals.
00:36:31.199 --> 00:36:34.159
And the power we can do with physical pain is insane.
00:36:34.159 --> 00:36:42.480
Like I I uh I removed a sebaceous cyst from a very uh sensitive portion of the male anatomy at home.
00:36:42.480 --> 00:36:54.400
I did kitchen surgery and removed a piece of cysts, you use and uh well, I have access to skeletons and things, but I want to make sure I get the entire capsule out and then stop the breathing.
00:36:54.400 --> 00:36:56.800
I used the stip uh bleeding, I used the stiptic pencil.
00:36:56.800 --> 00:37:01.599
But I had one and my doctor sent me to a dermatologist and he removed it.
00:37:01.599 --> 00:37:12.880
It was a very unpleasant experience with cauterizing and smoke, and you know, I thought, you know, I've just met this man 10 minutes ago, and I permitted him to set fire to my scrottum, you know, and it was just very, very bizarre.
00:37:12.880 --> 00:37:17.519
So when I developed another one, I thought, screw this, I'm just gonna cut it out myself.
00:37:17.519 --> 00:37:18.480
And so I did.
00:37:18.480 --> 00:37:21.760
And I went back to our family using, you know, a bit of hypnosis to numb the area.
00:37:21.760 --> 00:37:22.880
I went back to our family doctor.
00:37:22.880 --> 00:37:26.159
I said, I've developed another sebaceous cyst, and you know, oh, I'll get you in with Dr.
00:37:26.159 --> 00:37:26.800
So-and-so.
00:37:26.800 --> 00:37:29.280
That's no way uh I cut it out myself.
00:37:29.280 --> 00:37:31.840
And he just goes, he's been my doctor for 30 years.
00:37:31.840 --> 00:37:36.079
He goes, Yeah, show me, show it.
00:37:36.079 --> 00:37:39.760
He said, actually, he did a really good job because I removed the entirety of the capsule.
00:37:39.760 --> 00:37:44.880
Well, here's the thing: I developed a growth underneath my right eye.
00:37:44.880 --> 00:37:50.400
I had it for maybe, well, I've had it for at least seven years because I hadn't seen my doctor in that time, and that's when he diagnosed it.
00:37:50.400 --> 00:37:51.760
It was dark, it looked like a mole.
00:37:51.760 --> 00:37:53.039
And he said, Yeah, that can be removed.
00:37:53.039 --> 00:37:54.960
An ophthalmologist will probably do it.
00:37:54.960 --> 00:37:56.639
He said, but they're gonna have to burn it off.
00:37:56.639 --> 00:38:02.159
And I thought, burn it off, like right under my the iris, you know, that's a scary, scary thing.
00:38:02.159 --> 00:38:03.840
And it got pretty big.
00:38:03.840 --> 00:38:05.599
I can't remember the name of it.
00:38:05.599 --> 00:38:08.719
So I was showing Chris Thompson yesterday when we did our podcast.
00:38:08.719 --> 00:38:15.679
I put myself in trance, numbed myself in the eye, yeah, a bit of a lidocaine that didn't exist, and I cut it off myself.
00:38:15.679 --> 00:38:17.760
And I just did that last week.
00:38:17.760 --> 00:38:22.320
And you can see there's not feeling anything crazy in my eye.
00:38:22.320 --> 00:38:28.719
Yeah, it's it's so the practical self-hypnosis for kitchen surgery is okay.
00:38:28.960 --> 00:38:41.360
So you put yourself in trance and then you send the your mind sends the uh imaginary lidocaine into the area and yeah, just the fingertip.
00:38:41.360 --> 00:38:41.760
Yeah.
00:38:41.920 --> 00:38:43.519
Just listen on this, you know.
00:38:43.519 --> 00:38:44.400
Yeah.
00:38:44.400 --> 00:38:58.079
We in fact in our last training, we had Lisa who had multiple root canals and everything, had so much dental work that we videoed it and used it online, just me grasping her face the way a dentist does when he does the injection right into the nerve.
00:38:58.079 --> 00:39:02.960
I don't know what a buccal branch or some facial nerve, whatever it is, massive branch.
00:39:02.960 --> 00:39:09.199
She gets right down in here, and I pretend to give her a shot, and her face went completely numb on the side.
00:39:09.199 --> 00:39:14.000
And then we had a dentist in the room, and he came up and checked, and he said, Yep, that's the anesthesia.
00:39:14.000 --> 00:39:17.199
She talked and her slams started drooling, her eye was warm.
00:39:17.199 --> 00:39:18.559
There is no anesthetic.
00:39:18.559 --> 00:39:21.199
That is such a false nerve.
00:39:21.280 --> 00:39:27.840
Yeah, I don't know if it's buccal or buccal or how do you say it, but but then uh yeah, the dental tooth pain.
00:39:27.840 --> 00:39:32.239
I had a root canal years ago, and before that, it's severe pain.
00:39:32.239 --> 00:39:38.880
And so the ability to change how pain is is processed uh is is is impressive.
00:39:39.360 --> 00:39:42.639
Turning it into a signal, you know, a message, perhaps.
00:39:42.639 --> 00:39:47.280
And that's a wonderful thing I got from my friend Freddie Jackwood, an excellent hypnotist and trainer.
00:39:47.280 --> 00:39:55.599
He um he says to people when he does his pain management or his pain relief session, which is uh the arrow that he came up with, and it's clever.
00:39:55.599 --> 00:40:00.159
He says, all that old, useful, unnecessary pain you used to have.
00:40:00.159 --> 00:40:04.159
So, like in my case with the neck, I don't need a signal that my neck is screwed up.
00:40:04.159 --> 00:40:04.719
I know it is.
00:40:04.719 --> 00:40:08.320
That's why I got this cavitation, it cracks 200 times a day.
00:40:08.320 --> 00:40:10.480
And I know it's injured.
00:40:10.480 --> 00:40:13.360
So now that I know it's injured, I don't have to be careful with it.
00:40:13.360 --> 00:40:17.679
And that's one of the ways that it's framed it as it was unnecessary, useless pain.
00:40:17.679 --> 00:40:19.039
And that works with people.
00:40:19.039 --> 00:40:22.079
When you've got the signal, it's nature's way of telling you something's wrong.
00:40:22.079 --> 00:40:25.360
When you get the signal, you don't need to keep feeling the pain anymore.
00:40:25.360 --> 00:40:26.559
You can be careful with it.
00:40:26.880 --> 00:40:31.920
It's where we put our attention and how we frame frame the story.
00:40:31.920 --> 00:40:34.000
And it's incredibly powerful.
00:40:34.000 --> 00:40:34.960
Yeah, it is a story.
00:40:34.960 --> 00:40:43.280
Can you also tell the the story of the uh how you burnt your hands and uh twisting?
00:40:43.280 --> 00:40:51.519
Yeah, and and uh and how uh hypnosis can change sort of the inflammation process.
00:40:52.320 --> 00:40:53.199
Absolutely.
00:40:53.199 --> 00:41:02.400
Um I read for years Dabney Ewan, who was an excellent hypnotist, who's professor of psychiatry and professor of surgery, which is an interesting combination, is somewhere in Louisiana.
00:41:02.400 --> 00:41:09.280
Excellent hypnotist, one of the best hypnosis books for beginners, is his book, 101 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started Doing Hypnosis.
00:41:09.280 --> 00:41:10.320
And it's real quick and easy.
00:41:10.320 --> 00:41:12.880
Dabney Ewan, EWI, and highly recommend it.
00:41:12.880 --> 00:41:18.559
But he talked about how hypnosis can undo burns if you can get to the person within a couple of hours.
00:41:18.559 --> 00:41:22.639
And my experience is if you can get to the person within an hour, it's really good.
00:41:22.639 --> 00:41:28.880
He said you can switch operatokinin release, which of course causes the secondary pain, inflammation.
00:41:28.880 --> 00:41:31.039
It can go overboard sometimes.
00:41:31.039 --> 00:41:34.639
And so I'd I taught this for years, but I'd never seen it done.
00:41:34.639 --> 00:41:37.840
I just rested on his authority and that he knew what he was doing.
00:41:37.840 --> 00:41:39.679
And so would teach this to my students.
00:41:39.679 --> 00:41:49.920
Well, then I had the occasion to test it out because a few years back we were at our little 600 square foot cabin up in the Canadian wilderness where I spoke to you from last time with horrible copper wire internet.
00:41:49.920 --> 00:41:51.280
It was fun to see.
00:41:51.280 --> 00:41:53.199
I'm jealous of your cabin.
00:41:53.360 --> 00:41:56.159
I uh I'm looking out at the bright wall here.
00:41:56.480 --> 00:41:57.039
Yeah.
00:41:57.039 --> 00:41:58.400
Oh yeah.
00:41:58.400 --> 00:42:02.000
So we, you know, I was making spare ribs and I had them in the oven.
00:42:02.000 --> 00:42:04.239
I think it was raining out, so I couldn't do them on the barbecue.
00:42:04.239 --> 00:42:07.199
And I had the oven set at 425 or 450 Fahrenheit.
00:42:07.199 --> 00:42:10.159
It's a damn hot oven on a metal tray.
00:42:10.159 --> 00:42:13.119
This wasn't aluminum, stainless steel, really held the heat.
00:42:13.119 --> 00:42:15.360
So the ribs are on it and everything's bubbly and crispy.
00:42:15.360 --> 00:42:16.480
Okay, time is up.
00:42:16.480 --> 00:42:17.199
Let's bring them out.
00:42:17.199 --> 00:42:20.880
I put on the gloves of the silicone, the blacksmith gloves, you know.
00:42:20.880 --> 00:42:25.760
Take this tray out, set it on the counter on a couple of trivets to protect the counter.
00:42:25.760 --> 00:42:32.960
I shut the oven, turned it off, and I turned back and saw that the tray was a bit wonky, sticking over the edge of the counter, because I put it down quickly.
00:42:32.960 --> 00:42:36.079
Without thinking, I've already taken the gloves off.
00:42:36.079 --> 00:42:40.719
I just gripped the edge of the tray to move it, and yow, my fingers stuck to it.
00:42:40.719 --> 00:42:46.239
And so I remember, you know, I did the Red Cross first aid course.
00:42:46.239 --> 00:42:48.719
I remember flush burns with cold water until help arrives.
00:42:48.719 --> 00:42:49.840
Well, it's not gonna be any help.
00:42:49.840 --> 00:42:54.079
So I under the cold water tap, and I thought, okay, I'm gonna give this a shot.
00:42:54.079 --> 00:43:01.039
So after my, I'd run the water for a couple of minutes, I said to my wife, I'm gonna go put myself in a trance and see if I can switch off this burn.
00:43:01.039 --> 00:43:02.719
I said, I'll be back in about 20 minutes.
00:43:02.719 --> 00:43:06.960
So I went, lay down, went into trance, which any good hypnotist can do in seconds.
00:43:06.960 --> 00:43:11.920
And I visualized uh a tiny little fireman with tanks on his back.
00:43:11.920 --> 00:43:18.159
He's a few inches tall, and he walked down my arm, he had a fireman's hat on and everything, but the tanks were full of liquid nitrogen.
00:43:18.159 --> 00:43:20.960
And he began spraying dutifully everywhere it hurt.
00:43:20.960 --> 00:43:22.000
It started with one finger.
00:43:22.000 --> 00:43:24.400
It was two in particular, it was uh these two.
00:43:24.400 --> 00:43:31.119
And he started spraying at the tip of it, and then watching it get colder and becoming ice blue color, and it stops throbbing.
00:43:31.119 --> 00:43:33.679
He goes to the next one and starts hosing that one down.
00:43:33.679 --> 00:43:37.760
And after a few minutes, the other one started hurting again.
00:43:37.760 --> 00:43:38.639
So we did it again.
00:43:38.639 --> 00:43:41.440
It just went back and forth between the two of them until it stopped hurting.
00:43:41.440 --> 00:43:48.079
I came out of trance, and the next day when I got up, I showed my wife, I said, Look, there is no burn.
00:43:48.079 --> 00:43:49.679
She said, Shut up, it's the other hand.
00:43:49.679 --> 00:43:51.119
I said, No, it isn't.
00:43:51.119 --> 00:43:53.280
There was not even a first-degree burning.
00:43:53.280 --> 00:43:55.920
So I I don't know how it works.
00:43:55.920 --> 00:44:11.280
I mean, shutting up brady kinem, but we've known for you know a hundred years you can get rid of warts with hypnosis, which people used to think was mobilizing the global immune system, but it can't be because I've had people with warts on both hands, and you can tell them which ones will dry up and fall off, and they do.
00:44:11.280 --> 00:44:12.320
The others are left alone.
00:44:12.320 --> 00:44:17.039
So it so now I know I think it's it's it's switching off the capillaries and we're gonna be able to do that.
00:44:17.280 --> 00:44:19.840
It's a local immune system response with the warts.
00:44:19.840 --> 00:44:27.920
They there was um I remember reading a paper or or hearing uh uh uh somebody talk about duct tape and warts.
00:44:27.920 --> 00:44:32.000
So you can cure wortz with duct tape, but you don't have to put them on the wort.
00:44:32.000 --> 00:44:34.559
You could put them next to the wort and it also works.
00:44:34.559 --> 00:44:37.440
So it it somehow you can probably put it on your dresser.
00:44:37.440 --> 00:44:38.719
Maybe in your dresser.
00:44:38.719 --> 00:44:40.400
Maybe it's maybe it's the mental thing.
00:44:40.400 --> 00:44:44.719
I thought it was sort of locally stimulating some kind of uh inflammation.
00:44:44.719 --> 00:45:00.239
But but yeah, so you have the braidokinin, which is uh peptide that causes inflammation, and somehow you can your inner system knows how to access that nerve, that set of nerves, and and turn that off.
00:45:00.960 --> 00:45:09.519
So yeah, this isn't a but the implications of that, Dirk, the implications are, you know, we I used to work with a dentist in Toronto, Dr.
00:45:09.519 --> 00:45:11.360
Bilker, I helped him with some of his patients.
00:45:11.360 --> 00:45:18.159
And the literature says you can remove a secondary molar with no anesthetic, with a willing patient.
00:45:18.159 --> 00:45:20.480
And you can also tell the bleeding to stop.
00:45:20.480 --> 00:45:24.800
Now I've seen this, telling bleeding to stop when it reaches the top of the tooth socket.
00:45:24.800 --> 00:45:25.519
And it does.
00:45:25.519 --> 00:45:34.400
Now, the implication is our unconscious mind somehow has access to free-flowing blood cells, platelets that are aggregating purely in response to suggestion.
00:45:34.400 --> 00:45:36.079
Like, how far does this go?
00:45:36.079 --> 00:45:38.960
It flows my mind all the time.
00:45:39.360 --> 00:45:42.159
So, yeah, it is mind-blowing.
00:45:42.159 --> 00:45:53.199
And so uh trance, what is, as you said, I put myself into trance and then I sent these little firemen to that part of my body.
00:45:53.199 --> 00:45:54.719
What is trance?
00:45:55.039 --> 00:46:12.000
With all the different models, some people think it is a neurological model, insofar as the left brain is becoming and a gross generalization, is quieting down, becoming a little muted, and the right brain is beginning to open up full of mythopoetic elements and music and color and all of these wonderful things.
00:46:12.000 --> 00:46:26.159
Well, we're putting the, you know, the analytical, digital um numbers, you know, sequencing and words and language, letting that rest and the corpus calls, and we've got like two hemispheres talking to each other, and the right brain is waking up.
00:46:26.159 --> 00:46:36.719
And that seems like a pretty good model, which is why you know the worst forms of self-hypnosis are to say, I'm going into a deeper trance, I'm doing using your left brain to try to run your trance.
00:46:36.719 --> 00:46:38.159
You know, you want it out of the way.
00:46:38.159 --> 00:46:51.360
Then the other model, it just says, Yeah, I think it was Raphael Rhodes who spoke about the uh law of psychic relative exclusion, which I said it does not mean that if your grandmother is clairvoyant, you do not permit her to come to Thanksgiving dinner.
00:46:51.360 --> 00:46:54.079
It's the whole idea, which I thought was freaking brilliant.
00:46:54.079 --> 00:46:56.159
I mean, you can't teach that stuff, it's a gift.
00:46:56.159 --> 00:47:01.199
But I think it's Raphael Rhodes, what he talked about was that we all have two minds.
00:47:01.199 --> 00:47:06.800
And one recedes and one moves into the foreground, but they're always present to varying degrees.
00:47:06.800 --> 00:47:20.239
And as we go into trance, we become more internally focused, more recognizing uh feelings and sense and this shifting attention, not looking externally so much for what the world is, but beginning to experience our inner world.
00:47:20.239 --> 00:47:21.599
And that's a good model, too.
00:47:21.599 --> 00:47:23.519
Another one of a pond of water.
00:47:23.519 --> 00:47:28.079
Everything below the surface is unconscious, everything above the sky, and that is conscious.
00:47:28.079 --> 00:47:31.519
And when we go into a trance, we get a bit of fog over the surface.
00:47:31.519 --> 00:47:44.480
So this information going back and forth, conscious to unconscious, the idea of depotentiating the critical faculty, the construct that is somehow preventing us from running the unconscious mind because it's there to defend us.
00:47:44.480 --> 00:47:46.960
You tell someone to go jump in the lake, they're not going to do it.
00:47:46.960 --> 00:47:54.320
But if you put them in a good trance and tell them the lake is warm and perfect, there's nothing in the lake more than to step, then they will, provided it doesn't violate their moral codes.
00:47:54.320 --> 00:47:56.960
We've given a rationale for the behavior.
00:47:56.960 --> 00:48:08.000
So I think the best one is trance is really effective communication that gets to unconscious resources and gets any resistance out of the way.
00:48:08.000 --> 00:48:13.599
And then we can we can make phenomenal changes because we can access the stuff that is down there.
00:48:13.920 --> 00:48:14.239
Yeah.
00:48:14.239 --> 00:48:20.719
Somehow, for me, it's also sort of deeply relaxed, focused attention.
00:48:21.199 --> 00:48:24.960
But if you leave out the words deeply relaxed, I'd be inclined to agree with you completely.
00:48:24.960 --> 00:48:39.840
Because if you watch films like Triumph of the Will, the Nuremberg rallies, you're seeing literally thousands of people in a profound uh shared consensual trance, and not one of them is a but relaxation is a great way to get trance.
00:48:39.920 --> 00:48:41.119
I mean, it's very useful.
00:48:41.119 --> 00:48:42.239
Interesting.
00:48:42.239 --> 00:48:50.159
So, yeah, so now let's think more about how does hypnosis heal.
00:48:50.159 --> 00:48:54.239
Um, so you've given a some great examples.
00:48:54.239 --> 00:48:56.800
So Well, it's unique to each person.
00:48:56.800 --> 00:48:58.559
To each person, to each problem.
00:48:58.719 --> 00:48:59.920
So I think uh yeah.
00:48:59.920 --> 00:49:01.280
Yeah, yeah.
00:49:01.280 --> 00:49:04.559
So Jason Lynette, a friend of mine, does a great thing.
00:49:04.559 --> 00:49:08.239
He's a great hypnosis trainer, teaches the business of hypnosis, and he does it very well.
00:49:08.239 --> 00:49:11.599
He he gets, I'm sure it's Jason, he gets people, well, what does hypnosis feel like?
00:49:11.599 --> 00:49:12.079
So okay.
00:49:12.079 --> 00:49:15.920
He said, just let your arms relax, just man, let your head till down a bit, just close your eyes.
00:49:15.920 --> 00:49:17.679
And he just lets them do it for like five seconds.
00:49:17.679 --> 00:49:19.360
That's what hypnosis feels like.
00:49:19.360 --> 00:49:26.880
So they're not expecting to be knocked out by, you know, nitrous oxide or something and have no idea what's going on and feel like they've been comatose.
00:49:26.880 --> 00:49:29.519
I mean, that can happen, but it's not the norm.
00:49:29.519 --> 00:49:33.840
The normative is whichever way they do hypnosis is the right way for them.
00:49:33.840 --> 00:49:37.760
And we do we're more educators than hypnotists.
00:49:37.760 --> 00:49:41.519
You know, it's uh I make friends with their unconscious mind.
00:49:41.519 --> 00:49:43.119
And so it trusts me.
00:49:43.119 --> 00:49:45.760
And then let it come to the foreground.
00:49:45.760 --> 00:49:54.320
And again, hey, Doctor, one of the things that interests me is assigning roles to these subpersonalities, which you can do really well with hypnosis.
00:49:54.320 --> 00:50:01.039
Now, when I teach in class, I send it in a class, I'm I'm working back and forth with three different ego states.
00:50:01.039 --> 00:50:03.840
I have my teaching ego state, which is the one I'm in right now.
00:50:03.840 --> 00:50:09.599
I can tell right away because my teaching state has two others that stay alongside it and they get along really well.
00:50:09.599 --> 00:50:11.519
And one is the one I call the librarian.
00:50:11.519 --> 00:50:16.880
It's this elderly guy who has access to everything I know about hypnosis and NLP and related fields.
00:50:16.880 --> 00:50:18.400
And he's there to provide support.
00:50:18.400 --> 00:50:28.719
And on the other side, I've got the jester, and he's like this hilarious Jewish comic from the 60s, 50s, 40s, and which is funny because everybody thinks I'm Jewish and I'm not.
00:50:28.719 --> 00:50:33.679
So we have a Jewish comic, and he just throws in hilarious lines because humor unlocks the model.
00:50:33.679 --> 00:50:36.480
And when we're teaching, we keep people laughing, they learn quickly.
00:50:36.480 --> 00:50:42.639
So I will be teaching and I'll sense he's got something to say, and I honestly don't know what it is.
00:50:42.639 --> 00:50:52.079
And he jumps in, becomes executive, says the line, gets a big laugh, the librarian notes what he's just said, and it becomes available for me next time, and the teacher comes back in.
00:50:52.079 --> 00:50:55.360
Now, the liability here is in this model.
00:50:55.360 --> 00:50:59.760
When I was teaching for NLP Canada years ago, I taught hypnosis.
00:50:59.760 --> 00:51:06.079
Their course, Derek Baumer hired me as this hypnosis gunslinger and said, I need someone to teach hypnosis, so he hired me.
00:51:06.079 --> 00:51:20.079
But teaching the people in the class how to work with these different states, it was really, really odd because, first of all, people are surprised to learn they have these different states and that you can assign them roles with hypnosis.
00:51:20.079 --> 00:51:24.159
But when people realize that and remove the restraint, you can do some amazing things.
00:51:24.159 --> 00:51:35.440
Now, I'd been teaching this all week and then went to do a hypnosis show because I did almost 5,000 shows from 75 to 19, 1980, oh no, 2018, 43 years.
00:51:35.440 --> 00:51:40.880
But in that time, I went to do the show East of Toronto, a place called Coburg, this rec hall, great event.
00:51:40.880 --> 00:51:43.199
And a friend of ours said, Well, you were different today.
00:51:43.199 --> 00:51:47.360
I don't want to say, Well, you seem like you were teaching everybody rather than being an entertainer.
00:51:47.360 --> 00:51:50.239
And I went, Oh, shoot, I was in my teaching ego stakes.
00:51:50.239 --> 00:51:52.239
I mean, doing that, that's not how you entertain people.
00:51:52.239 --> 00:51:56.559
They don't they don't care about, you know, what autonomic responses you're getting from people.
00:51:56.559 --> 00:51:57.440
Nobody cares.
00:51:57.440 --> 00:51:58.400
They want to laugh.
00:51:58.400 --> 00:52:02.320
So I began to really be specific as to which ego state was executive.
00:52:02.320 --> 00:52:05.519
But now we, you and I have talked about AI briefly.
00:52:05.519 --> 00:52:11.119
You can design um GPTs with hypnosis as well.
00:52:11.119 --> 00:52:19.840
And what I did was I got into a trance and asked my most resourceful, assertive, and powerful ego state.
00:52:19.840 --> 00:52:34.639
Resourceful was really the key to become executive whenever I had an emergency that it would was strong enough to push any other ego state out instantly, would deal with the emergency and become unconscious again.
00:52:34.639 --> 00:52:36.239
And I thought, what am I going to name it?
00:52:36.239 --> 00:52:37.599
So I named it 008.
00:52:37.599 --> 00:52:40.480
It became my pseudo-James Bond ego state.
00:52:40.480 --> 00:52:41.760
Very resourceful, right?
00:52:41.760 --> 00:52:43.519
It's only become executive once.
00:52:43.519 --> 00:52:45.440
This sounds like I'm making it absolutely true.
00:52:45.440 --> 00:52:46.480
I can tell you where I was.
00:52:46.480 --> 00:52:51.360
I was driving east from Toronto towards uh Oshawa, Ontario, on Highway 401.
00:52:51.360 --> 00:52:57.519
Now, people who've never been to Toronto who come over to train with us from Singapore or you know, France, they think Toronto's gonna be a backwater.
00:52:57.519 --> 00:53:01.039
They're amazed that it's the third largest city in North America after LA and New York.
00:53:01.039 --> 00:53:03.760
I had that reaction when I visited you guys.
00:53:03.840 --> 00:53:06.800
Yeah, I was like, oh, this is gonna be quite beautiful.
00:53:07.679 --> 00:53:09.119
And uh it's a big city, yeah.
00:53:09.119 --> 00:53:10.559
The opposite is true.
00:53:10.559 --> 00:53:13.039
It's terrible at traffic, it's just it's a mess.
00:53:13.039 --> 00:53:16.880
But my wife and I are on Highway 401, so it's it's a high-speed highway.
00:53:16.880 --> 00:53:18.880
So we're going east, she's in the passenger seat.
00:53:18.880 --> 00:53:20.719
I'm just driving, you know, normal.
00:53:20.719 --> 00:53:22.880
The truck in front of us is a pickup truck.
00:53:22.880 --> 00:53:27.280
He's got a dresser on the back of it, and he's maybe 50 feet ahead of me at highway speed.
00:53:27.280 --> 00:53:32.800
The tailgate opens, and this freaking dresser falls into my lane right in front of me.
00:53:32.800 --> 00:53:36.559
And that ego state, 008, became executive instantly.
00:53:36.559 --> 00:53:46.159
I mean, I didn't have the music, but the I did this bang, changed, checked the line around like that.
00:53:46.159 --> 00:53:50.719
And you're putting a check the carotid pulse my pulse, no, and a Subaru.
00:53:50.719 --> 00:53:54.239
And my my pulse had not even gone, hadn't even gone up.
00:53:54.239 --> 00:53:57.280
My wife said, Wow, that was some pretty amazing driving.
00:53:57.280 --> 00:53:59.360
I said, Mandel, Mike Mandel.
00:53:59.360 --> 00:54:00.639
But it and it works.
00:54:00.639 --> 00:54:06.880
That ego state is always alert for those emergency situations, just by training it, what I wanted it to do.
00:54:07.119 --> 00:54:31.280
So, yeah, so in terms of healing, we have this ability to access ego state stuff and and uh and and make shifts and and re-script, change meaning, change how parts of ourselves think about ourselves, really change core beliefs about ourselves.
00:54:31.280 --> 00:54:32.400
Totally.
00:54:32.400 --> 00:54:33.280
Yeah.
00:54:33.599 --> 00:54:35.840
Because we don't, we don't interact with the real world.
00:54:35.840 --> 00:54:37.119
We don't really know what it is.
00:54:37.119 --> 00:54:40.159
You know, we're just everything's going through a series of transforms.
00:54:40.159 --> 00:54:51.119
So the the only, you know, if we look at something that we get visual cortex stimulated to get the images upside down, it's binocular, our brain puts them together, flips it the right way up, adds 3D imaging, so we imaging.
00:54:51.119 --> 00:54:54.400
So we think we're seeing out there, but we're really seeing here.
00:54:54.400 --> 00:55:02.800
And it it's only, you know, it's only the sense of smell where we apprehend the world directly, because we're actually getting molecules in the limbic system when we smell something.
00:55:02.800 --> 00:55:05.119
That's why it's the expressed train of the brain.
00:55:05.119 --> 00:55:11.360
But these are tools that enable us to interact with this mytho-poetic universe, whatever we decide it is.
00:55:11.360 --> 00:55:20.400
And again, I'm not saying we're changing physical reality, but we're responding to what we believe and what fits our reality tunnels rather than what's actually there.
00:55:20.800 --> 00:55:23.760
I want to hear a bit about your personal story.
00:55:23.760 --> 00:55:32.079
I want to hear your version of the history of hypnosis, and I want to hear some quick questions about meaning for you personally.
00:55:32.079 --> 00:55:42.559
Maybe starting with history of hypnosis, because you've created this neo-Ericksonian model of hypnosis.
00:55:42.559 --> 00:56:14.800
So I would like to for people to sort of understand what that is and and to get there, I feel like it's it's really important for people to know that hypnosis was a way of working with the unconscious mind before analysis, be uh Freud was working with the hypnotists and Charcot and Mesmer, and then and then that split in these different lineages where there were the direct hypnote hypnosis people and then the indirect Ericsson.
00:56:14.800 --> 00:56:25.360
So maybe if you could just sort of tell the story of hypnosis and then how that leads to you and your neo-ericsonian model.
00:56:26.239 --> 00:56:28.320
I will bullet point it for you, Doc.
00:56:28.320 --> 00:56:43.199
So the oldest examples we have is is going back um about a thousand years ago, where we had the Egyptians had sleep temples where people would go in, they had problems, and they'd be put into a trance without knowing what it was, with torches burning and incense and chanting and so on.
00:56:43.199 --> 00:56:45.599
It created this wonderful atmosphere for suggestion.
00:56:45.599 --> 00:56:46.639
The Greeks liked it.
00:56:46.639 --> 00:56:51.360
They picked up on it and made it hypnosis in the temples of Asclepius, who was a snake god.
00:56:51.360 --> 00:56:53.119
Its temple was full of snakes.
00:56:53.119 --> 00:56:57.119
And if you could fall asleep in there, you'd wake up and apparently your problem would be gone.
00:56:57.119 --> 00:57:05.039
One can only assume that you're not going in for, you know, herpetophobia, fear of snakes in the first place, because it could be counterproductive.
00:57:05.039 --> 00:57:06.480
But that was the initial stop.
00:57:06.480 --> 00:57:18.960
Plus, if we really look back, it went back further than that because wise women and medicine men would tell the stories, the tribe's mythopoetic story of why they're there and all their history, the dream time with the Australian Aboriginals.
00:57:18.960 --> 00:57:20.320
And this would be hypnotic.
00:57:20.320 --> 00:57:24.800
They'd be reasserting and reinforcing the tribal memory around the fires.
00:57:24.800 --> 00:57:31.440
And these would be incredible trance states with lessons learned and the proverbs of interaction, animal stories, and so on.
00:57:31.440 --> 00:57:36.800
But it really was Mesmer who started the move towards actual hypnosis.
00:57:36.800 --> 00:57:39.199
He was a medical doctor out of Vienna.
00:57:39.199 --> 00:57:42.800
I had some unusual ideas about the planets, but he was pretty straightforward back then.
00:57:42.800 --> 00:57:45.519
This is the 1700s, so 18th century.
00:57:45.519 --> 00:57:49.679
And Mesmer studied with Father Maximilian Hell, who was a Jesuit priest.
00:57:49.679 --> 00:57:51.920
Now, back then they used bloodletting for everything.
00:57:51.920 --> 00:57:56.559
So no matter what was wrong, you know, they would open a vein and take out a pint of blood.
00:57:56.559 --> 00:58:00.880
And uh the idea was removing these sanguine humors that are making you sick.
00:58:00.880 --> 00:58:03.360
Back then, bloodletting was a cure for everything.
00:58:03.360 --> 00:58:07.599
If you'd go to get your blood taken for this, it was a barber who did it.
00:58:07.599 --> 00:58:09.119
So a barber was the surgeon of the day.
00:58:09.119 --> 00:58:26.159
They set bones, they did bloodletting, and you see, they would get you to hold a stick that was wrapped in bandages as they opened a vein, and the stick would get all gross and gory looking, so they'd wrap it with more bandage, and that became the symbol of the barber pole, the red and white striped pole, although they've added blue now for patriotic reasons, I imagine, in the United States.
00:58:26.159 --> 00:58:27.599
But it is blue as well.
00:58:27.599 --> 00:58:29.199
And so they did this.
00:58:29.199 --> 00:58:31.599
In fact, people don't realize they did it for everything.
00:58:31.599 --> 00:58:34.079
Um, George Washington died from bloodletting.
00:58:34.079 --> 00:58:37.519
He had some sort of infection, maybe pneumonia, traveled with his surgeon, i.e.
00:58:37.519 --> 00:58:39.920
his barber, and got really sick.
00:58:39.920 --> 00:58:42.079
So they took a pint of blood, and amazingly he got worse.
00:58:42.079 --> 00:58:43.920
And so they thought, oh, he's not taking enough.
00:58:43.920 --> 00:58:44.719
They took more.
00:58:44.719 --> 00:58:54.320
And I think they did like five, they took four or five pints, and you know, removing all the macrophages and all the things he needs to fight the infection and the antibodies.
00:58:54.320 --> 00:58:59.280
And he died despite that, and it was put down to death by pneumonia or strep throat or whatever the heck it was.
00:58:59.280 --> 00:59:01.039
So this was just what everybody did.
00:59:01.039 --> 00:59:07.519
So Mesmer learned this, but he learned from Father Maximilian Hell, who had lodestone, magnetite, naturally occurring magnets.
00:59:07.519 --> 00:59:12.320
He would move the magnets over the vein astery, he'd open it up, and a clot would form.
00:59:12.320 --> 00:59:15.679
So now we know we're causing palatolid aggregation just through suggestion.
00:59:15.679 --> 00:59:16.559
Now we see what happened.
00:59:16.559 --> 00:59:19.199
So when Mesmer says, wow, he was all over this.
00:59:19.199 --> 00:59:23.760
So he starts doing his mesmerism, or he starts doing his bloodletting thing.
00:59:23.760 --> 00:59:26.159
One day he did not have his magnets with him.
00:59:26.159 --> 00:59:27.840
I guess he left them at home.
00:59:27.840 --> 00:59:34.559
So he grabbed the nearest thing and it was a wooden pointer for a blackboard, passed it over the person's arm, and amazingly the bleeding stopped.
00:59:34.559 --> 00:59:42.800
Now, Mesmer did not apply the proper razor, which in this case would be Occam's razor, which should be that the lodestones have nothing to do with it, it's nothing to do with magnetism.
00:59:42.800 --> 00:59:46.079
What is the explanation that requires the fewest new hypotheses?
00:59:46.079 --> 00:59:47.920
Well, something else is going on here.
00:59:47.920 --> 00:59:49.519
And it was indirect suggestion.
00:59:49.519 --> 00:59:51.199
Mesmer draws the wrong conclusions.
00:59:51.199 --> 00:59:53.920
It's me! I have magnetic powers.
00:59:53.920 --> 00:59:56.000
So he becomes like an X man.
00:59:56.000 --> 00:59:59.840
His superpowers, he thinks he's magnetizing people, starts passing his hands over people.
00:59:59.840 --> 01:00:06.880
Sets up these seances, as they were called, and people started to get well, purely purely with anticipation and prestige.
01:00:06.880 --> 01:00:09.440
Prestige gets you a foot in the door right away.
01:00:09.440 --> 01:00:12.960
And so the aristocracy, he went to Paris.
01:00:12.960 --> 01:00:16.000
Anybody who was anybody went to Mesmer if they were sick.
01:00:16.000 --> 01:00:20.800
And so he developed this, and but unfortunately, he wound up dying in obscurity.
01:00:20.800 --> 01:00:25.679
He asked King Louis to do a royal commission to prove that what he was doing was real and it wasn't.
01:00:25.679 --> 01:00:29.039
They said Benjamin Franklin was on the board, as was Dr.
01:00:29.039 --> 01:00:34.639
Guillotine, who was a pain management specialist who created the ultimate pain management, removing your head from your central nervous system.
01:00:34.639 --> 01:00:40.079
And Lavoisier, the chemist, who was actually killed on Guillotine's guillotine later on in the French Revolution.
01:00:40.079 --> 01:00:44.559
So Mesmer was discredited, dies in obscurity, buried somewhere in Switzerland or something.
01:00:44.559 --> 01:00:48.079
He he contributed nothing scientific to hypnosis.
01:00:48.079 --> 01:00:50.159
He just got everybody think about this energy thing.
01:00:50.159 --> 01:01:01.280
But it spread, and Elliotson in England was taken in by it, and James Esdale in Calcutta was a British Army surgeon, 300 serious operations using mesmerism as this transinducer.
01:01:01.280 --> 01:01:06.719
But it started to come out of the dark ages with Braid in Manchester, England, where I'm from.
01:01:06.719 --> 01:01:20.159
And Braid was uh doing an ex, he saw an experiment of a stage performer, La Fontaine due mesmerism, and Braid thought it was all bunk, and he went up on stage, got a hat pin, and thrust it under the person's fingernail to the root, and they did not react.
01:01:20.159 --> 01:01:22.559
And he thought, okay, there is something going on here.
01:01:22.559 --> 01:01:27.920
Later on, Braid discovered that eye fixation would cause hypnosis, but he thought it was eye fixation.
01:01:27.920 --> 01:01:30.320
It was really the fixation of attention that did it.
01:01:30.320 --> 01:01:36.639
He created the Braid method where you stare at something, a lighted disc or whatever, and he gives suggestions for falling asleep.
01:01:36.639 --> 01:01:41.039
And everybody did this cause and effect direct hypnosis for a couple hundred years.
01:01:41.039 --> 01:01:42.719
In fact, Freud was trained in it.
01:01:42.719 --> 01:01:43.760
He studied with Charcot.
01:01:43.760 --> 01:01:48.960
I think he studied with Libo and Bernheim in the two schools, Saint-Petrier in Paris and the Nasi School.
01:01:48.960 --> 01:01:50.559
And they're starting to formulate this.
01:01:50.559 --> 01:01:54.000
Now, Bernheim was great because he was a neurologist.
01:01:54.000 --> 01:01:57.760
And Libo was a medical doctor, and they kept really good records.
01:01:57.760 --> 01:02:06.559
And his book, Suggestive Therapeutics, written in the 1880s, it's still a good read because he documented what they were doing using purely cause and effect direct suggestion.
01:02:06.559 --> 01:02:07.440
This will happen.
01:02:07.440 --> 01:02:08.079
This is happening.
01:02:08.079 --> 01:02:08.639
This is happening.
01:02:08.639 --> 01:02:09.679
Your pain is disappearing.
01:02:09.679 --> 01:02:10.480
All of that.
01:02:10.480 --> 01:02:11.280
Great results.
01:02:11.280 --> 01:02:13.599
Freud checked it out, was a lousy hypnotist.
01:02:13.599 --> 01:02:18.000
He had dentures that were falling up because of cocaine use, rubbing the cocaine on his gums.
01:02:18.000 --> 01:02:22.400
And, you know, it's not easy to do an induction if your false teeth are falling in your lap.
01:02:22.400 --> 01:02:24.320
Tends to put people off somewhat.
01:02:24.320 --> 01:02:28.159
But he had um decided he would create psychoanalysis instead.
01:02:28.159 --> 01:02:30.639
And he said, My therapy will not be for the poor.
01:02:30.639 --> 01:02:33.840
He will average 100 to 300 hours to effect a cure.
01:02:33.840 --> 01:02:36.559
All of a sudden, nobody can afford it except the wealthy.
01:02:36.559 --> 01:02:47.280
And it takes off, and they put hypnosis on the back burner and it just disappears until World War I, when there are all these traumatized soldiers with battle fatigue, shell shock, PCSD.
01:02:47.280 --> 01:02:54.320
And they took it off the shelf to detraumatize them quickly by taking them back to the event, abreacting all the negative emotions, giving them positive suggestions.
01:02:54.320 --> 01:02:55.280
They're cured.
01:02:55.280 --> 01:03:01.519
And then it went back, and the psychoanalysts had it taken off the table again until World War II rescued us.
01:03:01.519 --> 01:03:09.519
And people like my mom and dad went through the Manchester Blitz where the firebombing and the bombing of Manchester and the Battle of Britain, 3,000 houses blown up in one night.
01:03:09.519 --> 01:03:12.960
I mean, just every day they'd get up, you know, keep calm and carry on.
01:03:12.960 --> 01:03:14.559
You just had to do that, go back to work.
01:03:14.559 --> 01:03:16.079
But they're traumatized by it.
01:03:16.079 --> 01:03:18.880
And the powers that be said, hey, wait a minute.
01:03:18.880 --> 01:03:23.920
Since we can't psychoanalyze everybody, what if we take that hypnosis thing back off the shelf?
01:03:23.920 --> 01:03:25.760
And well, I guess we could do.
01:03:25.760 --> 01:03:29.440
Well, that did a lot of detraumatization for civilians as well.
01:03:29.440 --> 01:03:34.239
This was total war, not just fighting in trenches in Europe, but now all of people were hurt.
01:03:34.239 --> 01:03:36.079
And the results were phenomenal.
01:03:36.079 --> 01:03:38.000
And so it kept growing, it kept growing.
01:03:38.000 --> 01:03:43.599
And it was still this direct hypnotist does something, subject goes into trance and follows instructions.
01:03:43.599 --> 01:03:48.239
Authoritarian, paternal hypnotist as the wanting control, the locus of the focus.
01:03:48.239 --> 01:03:51.760
And then this amazing guy, Milton Erickson, came along.
01:03:51.760 --> 01:03:56.639
And Erickson went from, I believe, Wisconsin, wound up in uh Phoenix.
01:03:56.639 --> 01:04:00.480
He trained with Clark Hull, who was professor of psychology at Yale.
01:04:00.480 --> 01:04:05.519
Um, Hull wrote the book uh Hypnosis and Suggestibility, still a really good book.
01:04:05.519 --> 01:04:07.360
But Erickson was prodigy.
01:04:07.360 --> 01:04:09.199
He had polio twice.
01:04:09.199 --> 01:04:12.159
He learned to calibrate people because he had polio.
01:04:12.239 --> 01:04:12.880
He couldn't move.
01:04:12.880 --> 01:04:13.599
Go ahead.
01:04:13.599 --> 01:04:23.360
So that was an amazing history of hypnosis and of the initial sort of direct hypnosis.
01:04:23.360 --> 01:04:37.440
And you're talking about, you know, going way back, and then these people who developed Sdale with these deep, deep trances, doing surgeries and different medical doctors, and then using trauma.
01:04:37.440 --> 01:04:47.679
And I'm curious about why it's always sort of this weird sort of fringe aspect, but but that's a really nice lineage and and done very quickly.
01:04:47.679 --> 01:04:48.960
And I left a lot out.
01:04:48.960 --> 01:04:50.239
And you left a lot out.
01:04:50.239 --> 01:04:53.360
And and uh yeah, no, there's so much to get to.
01:04:53.360 --> 01:05:00.639
And then there's Milton Erickson who who everything because he was very direct, very direct in his early days.
01:05:00.719 --> 01:05:02.159
Like he he was super direct.
01:05:02.159 --> 01:05:09.760
But here's a guy who hypnotized people pretty well every day for like 50 or 60 years, and he developed the indirect method.
01:05:09.760 --> 01:05:11.840
And I said earlier, we'll show it to the camera.
01:05:11.840 --> 01:05:15.360
This is the brick from Milton Erickson's house, which is freaking amazing.
01:05:15.360 --> 01:05:19.840
One of my students got me that when it was knocked down to put up a parking lot.
01:05:19.840 --> 01:05:25.840
And uh, Ericsson then began noticing naturally occurring trance states with people.
01:05:25.840 --> 01:05:28.480
And Erickson was calibrating, they've gone into a trance.
01:05:28.480 --> 01:05:35.199
So he would utilize the trances they're naturally going into, and then he would tell stories and he would do the most miraculous things.
01:05:35.199 --> 01:05:36.400
People couldn't figure it out.
01:05:36.400 --> 01:05:37.840
It didn't seem like science.
01:05:37.840 --> 01:05:42.320
So someone would come in, and one kid was a recidivist.
01:05:42.320 --> 01:05:56.719
He kept going back to crime and they hoped Erickson could fix it because Ericsson was a medical doctor, psychiatrist as well, and came out of psychoanalysis, which is why he hypnotized people multiple times at first because he was used to doing extended several sessions, several extended sessions.
01:05:56.719 --> 01:06:05.920
But this kid is there, and you know the the story is he's come, he come in, he sits down next to Erickson, and Ericsson's entire therapy was, how surprised are you gonna be?
01:06:05.920 --> 01:06:07.760
Sitting in his wheelchair, gravelly voice.
01:06:07.760 --> 01:06:12.960
How surprised will you be, Johnny, when you leave this office and find out you've already.
01:06:12.960 --> 01:06:16.559
The kid goes, really surprised.
01:06:16.559 --> 01:06:18.400
And he yells, get out of my office.
01:06:18.400 --> 01:06:19.920
Kid doesn't go back to crime again.
01:06:19.920 --> 01:06:20.559
That's it.
01:06:20.559 --> 01:06:27.280
He finds his way in using naturally occurring states, using conversational hypnosis, and using metaphor.
01:06:27.280 --> 01:06:28.639
Metaphor is great for this.
01:06:28.639 --> 01:06:40.559
So the neo-Ericksonian approach that I teach, on one end, we have this very direct, powerful, you know, fixing things like your bleeding is stopping, that sort of cause and effect hypnosis.
01:06:40.559 --> 01:06:50.719
At the other end of this continuum, we have Milton Ericsson talking fluff and verbiage all over the place, but getting into the unconscious purely through using language.
01:06:50.719 --> 01:06:54.320
But it's not two sides of a coin, it is a continuum.
01:06:54.320 --> 01:07:00.880
So I teach my students to be as indirect as possible, because it's mostly undetectable, but as direct as necessary.
01:07:00.880 --> 01:07:04.880
Even Died in the Well Ericksonians go into direct hypnosis when you're in a deep enough trance.
01:07:04.880 --> 01:07:06.480
There's no point doing that, of course, then.
01:07:06.480 --> 01:07:08.719
You've already got their unconscious front and center.
01:07:08.719 --> 01:07:12.159
And so with me, the thing is always simplification.
01:07:12.159 --> 01:07:18.559
What can we do that is simple, effortless, and enjoyable for the subject to get them the changes they want?
01:07:18.559 --> 01:07:20.559
There's no need to complexify things.
01:07:20.559 --> 01:07:26.000
It is the mark of the dilettante and the novice that they mistake complexity for cleverness.
01:07:26.000 --> 01:07:32.800
And in reality, the real brilliance is doing something, and no one knows you've even intervened, but their problems disappear.
01:07:35.679 --> 01:07:42.480
Can you unpack what you did with the um the initial uh memory?
01:07:42.480 --> 01:07:43.760
Oh, the memory thing.
01:07:44.239 --> 01:07:45.440
Oh, yeah, yeah, sure.
01:07:45.440 --> 01:07:49.599
It's quite easy to do once you get a flow of so-called Ericksonian language.
01:07:49.599 --> 01:07:54.000
One of the things I'm doing is I'm speaking in nominalizations a lot of the time.
01:07:54.000 --> 01:07:58.159
So a nominalization is a noun that one cannot put in a wheelbarrow.
01:07:58.159 --> 01:08:03.679
You know, things like lamp, crow, empire state building, they can all go in a big enough wheelbarrow.
01:08:03.679 --> 01:08:15.280
But when we talk about finesse, empowerment, understanding, strength, concerns, uh, learnings, all of these things are nouns, but they have no physical form.
01:08:15.280 --> 01:08:21.039
And as such, they mean something different, either slightly different or radically different for everyone who hears them.
01:08:21.039 --> 01:08:24.560
We have our own rules as to what that word means based on our own experience.
01:08:24.560 --> 01:08:29.279
For example, someone might have the uh nominalization of success.
01:08:29.279 --> 01:08:32.720
And to them, success is running five multinational companies.
01:08:32.720 --> 01:08:36.560
To someone else, success means getting out of bed every morning in good health.
01:08:36.560 --> 01:08:40.159
Now, which one is most likely to fulfill his rules for success?
01:08:40.159 --> 01:08:45.920
Well, obviously the guy just has to get out of bed, but I can't presume that that's what that means for everybody.
01:08:45.920 --> 01:08:52.800
So when I begin to speak, I'll speak with nominalizations and I use one long sentence that never ends.
01:08:52.800 --> 01:09:03.439
And as I build that sentence and as I point their attention, there's another nominalization, into that sort of shifting world where all of the things that you're thinking, that's right, those things.
01:09:03.439 --> 01:09:11.760
I'm talking to the unconscious directly, and I'm setting up something which is verbal fluff without saying what it is.
01:09:11.760 --> 01:09:16.239
And then I'll say, and the second important thing, or I'll say the second freaky thing.
01:09:16.239 --> 01:09:18.640
Now I haven't even demarked what the first one is.
01:09:18.640 --> 01:09:22.000
So they're trying to grasp, you know, it's like trying to nail jello to a wall.
01:09:22.000 --> 01:09:29.039
Now I say the second important thing, or the second freaky thing, is that hypnosis starts happening as soon as you start talking about it.
01:09:29.039 --> 01:09:31.760
Now that puts them in a bit of a, uh-oh, he's doing it now.
01:09:31.840 --> 01:09:37.600
So then let's say now I've created a story in my mind that you've told me two things, right?
01:09:37.600 --> 01:09:47.039
That that you by how you introduce that, now you have changed the story that that I hold in my mind.
01:09:47.039 --> 01:09:49.920
And now you're setting up the forgetting piece.
01:09:49.920 --> 01:09:51.680
Yes, absolutely correct.
01:09:51.840 --> 01:09:55.920
We change the story that I'm doing hypnosis, and they're realizing themselves.
01:09:55.920 --> 01:10:01.359
I'm not saying it, I'm just saying that you know, when we start talking, hypnosis begins to occur naturally by talking about.
01:10:01.359 --> 01:10:07.680
And then I hit the third one and I say, but the real question, or something to that effect, is how easy is it for you?
01:10:07.680 --> 01:10:11.760
That's right, to totally forget the first important thing now.
01:10:11.760 --> 01:10:17.600
And I wait and I watch them do a transgerivational search, their eyes are going through all their brain systems trying to find the information.
01:10:17.600 --> 01:10:20.720
And I'll say, What else did you just forget?
01:10:20.720 --> 01:10:22.319
Whoa, that makes it weird.
01:10:22.319 --> 01:10:28.880
And then I'll say, and that internal disorganization you feel now is because you're unconscious.
01:10:28.880 --> 01:10:30.800
I pause and say, mind.
01:10:30.800 --> 01:10:33.119
So I'm told they're unconscious.
01:10:33.119 --> 01:10:34.479
I say, is listening.
01:10:34.479 --> 01:10:39.600
But I think it's important for you to be certain to remember, to forget certain things.
01:10:39.600 --> 01:10:41.760
And then I end it with, haven't you?
01:10:41.760 --> 01:10:46.560
It's causing this continuous reconsideration of the information.
01:10:46.720 --> 01:10:50.159
And we're always trying to make information of it, right?
01:10:50.159 --> 01:10:51.439
We're trying to make meaning.
01:10:51.439 --> 01:10:58.000
And then once we have a story of like, oh, he's he's created magic or something, then our mind can rest.
01:10:58.000 --> 01:11:03.760
And so you're playing with our meaning-making machinery and in really fun and interesting.
01:11:04.159 --> 01:11:07.680
And setting up a zygarnic loop so there's no resolution of it right away.
01:11:07.680 --> 01:11:09.600
We're looking for resolution.
01:11:09.600 --> 01:11:13.840
We want things to be understood so we can nail that box shut and move on to something else.
01:11:13.840 --> 01:11:17.039
And while we don't provide resolution, we leave everything dangling.
01:11:17.039 --> 01:11:18.479
It's very, very strange.
01:11:18.479 --> 01:11:20.319
I was at a flower show with my wife.
01:11:20.319 --> 01:11:26.880
It's called Canada Blooms, and it's every spring, nice beautiful flower show to get everybody ready for spring at the exhibition grounds in Toronto.
01:11:26.880 --> 01:11:29.680
I was walking through my wife and I and another couple.
01:11:29.680 --> 01:11:33.920
The man is an NLP trainer, excellent hypnotist, and he's always trying to get me to do stuff.
01:11:33.920 --> 01:11:36.560
So we're walking, he and I are walking, our wives are behind us.
01:11:36.560 --> 01:11:38.079
He said, Come on, do something, do something, do something.
01:11:38.079 --> 01:11:38.640
I said, Okay.
01:11:38.640 --> 01:11:40.239
I said, watch this guy walking towards us.
01:11:40.239 --> 01:11:43.359
So the man's walking towards us, I'm ostensibly talking to Steve.
01:11:43.359 --> 01:11:49.680
And just as the man gets near, I turn to his face and I said, Amnesia, like that, and just kept talking to Steve.
01:11:49.680 --> 01:11:50.880
And we walked about 10 steps.
01:11:50.880 --> 01:11:52.560
He said, You've got to look, you've got to look.
01:11:52.560 --> 01:12:00.720
I look back, you guys standing there just blinking back layers of trance, just because I've gotten past the critical faculty with surprise.
01:12:00.720 --> 01:12:02.399
Now, why is that guy said amnesia?
01:12:02.399 --> 01:12:03.439
Did I forget something?
01:12:03.439 --> 01:12:12.640
And when I got my license plate, when they switched in Ontario from seven digits to eight digits, I was at an airport, Toronto airport flying somewhere.
01:12:12.640 --> 01:12:14.159
My wife said, they're switching to eight digits.
01:12:14.159 --> 01:12:15.600
I said, get me hypnosis right now.
01:12:15.600 --> 01:12:17.039
She said, Yeah, you can pre-order it.
01:12:17.039 --> 01:12:18.159
I see you have to pay a fee.
01:12:18.159 --> 01:12:19.119
I said, get it right now.
01:12:19.119 --> 01:12:20.560
She said, Okay, I'll do it in the morning.
01:12:20.560 --> 01:12:22.079
I said, No, honey, I'm getting out of the way.
01:12:22.079 --> 01:12:22.640
Do it right now.
01:12:22.640 --> 01:12:23.760
So she got it for me.
01:12:23.760 --> 01:12:31.840
And it was hilarious because I'd stop at traffic lights and in the mirror, I'd see people going, let's say, pull up at the light, looking around, they're waiting behind me to go.
01:12:31.840 --> 01:12:35.439
And I drive away, and often they'd still be sitting there until someone honked behind them.
01:12:35.439 --> 01:12:38.720
The word itself is doing the job.
01:12:38.720 --> 01:12:41.439
Just, you know, if it isn't fun, it's not worth doing.
01:12:41.439 --> 01:12:42.399
It really isn't.
01:12:42.399 --> 01:12:43.359
Let's keep the humor.
01:12:43.359 --> 01:12:44.319
Absolutely.
01:12:44.319 --> 01:12:51.840
But meaning, I love what you're saying about meaning, though, because I mean, uh, I think it was Jordan Peterson who wrote, was it, Maps of Meaning?
01:12:51.840 --> 01:12:52.880
Excellent book.
01:12:52.880 --> 01:13:01.439
And the whole concept of we are invariably attempting to understand things in the context of our own reality tunnels.
01:13:01.439 --> 01:13:07.119
And Robert Anton Wilson wrote some tremendous stuff on this in Prometheus Rising and some of his other books.
01:13:07.119 --> 01:13:10.800
It is without me, without context, there is no meaning, though.
01:13:10.800 --> 01:13:12.640
So we're always looking for a context.
01:13:12.640 --> 01:13:23.279
I say, if if you paint your face blue and take your shirt off and run down Young Street in Toronto yelling and waving your arms, they'll put you in the Clark Institute of Psychiatry, and rightly so.
01:13:23.279 --> 01:13:30.239
But if you do that at a Toronto Maple Leafs hockey game, it's not only acceptable, it's it's enforced behavior.
01:13:30.239 --> 01:13:32.880
I believe something that's entirely appropriate.
01:13:32.880 --> 01:13:34.880
Context changes everything, right?
01:13:35.359 --> 01:13:36.319
So, yes.
01:13:36.319 --> 01:13:40.960
I want to get to some rapid fire questions about meaning.
01:13:40.960 --> 01:13:41.600
Sure.
01:13:41.600 --> 01:13:46.079
I think you you've talked about your origin story on other podcasts.
01:13:46.079 --> 01:13:50.720
And I want to hear a little bit about just what turned you into a hypnotist?
01:13:50.720 --> 01:13:56.880
Where were you born and what were the what was in the ether that sent you in this in this direction?
01:13:57.279 --> 01:13:58.479
I'll give you the headline edition.
01:13:58.479 --> 01:14:03.840
Born April 29th, 1953, in Chatterton, which is part of Greater Manchester, England.
01:14:03.840 --> 01:14:05.600
And people say, well, I guess you don't remember.
01:14:05.600 --> 01:14:06.319
I remember perfectly.
01:14:06.319 --> 01:14:09.680
If 34 Wellbeck Avenue, our phone number was fails were 3270.
01:14:09.680 --> 01:14:11.520
I mean, it's just I remember it perfectly.
01:14:11.520 --> 01:14:13.760
And we moved to Canada in 1957.
01:14:13.760 --> 01:14:14.880
My father was an engineer.
01:14:14.880 --> 01:14:20.880
He was recruited in Britain, as was a colleague of his, friend of his, uh, to work for Bell Telephone Company of Canada.
01:14:20.880 --> 01:14:22.720
He was an electrical engineer, brilliant man.
01:14:22.720 --> 01:14:25.760
Designed the testing gear for the transatlantic telephone cable.
01:14:25.760 --> 01:14:27.760
I mean, interesting guy, nicest guy you'd ever meet.
01:14:27.760 --> 01:14:30.239
An enemy in the world.
01:14:30.239 --> 01:14:31.359
So we moved to Canada.
01:14:31.359 --> 01:14:37.039
Him, my mom, and my sister and I followed by ship a few months after he'd come over and got a job.
01:14:37.039 --> 01:14:38.880
My sister is seven years older than me.
01:14:38.880 --> 01:14:43.520
And we came to Canada and I was fascinated by Canadian television and American television.
01:14:43.520 --> 01:14:50.000
Because back in Britain, we only had two channels, BBC, not even BBC, two or BBC and ITV, independent television.
01:14:50.000 --> 01:14:51.760
And they go off the air about 11 p.m.
01:14:51.760 --> 01:14:55.199
or something, in a big band, off the air test pattern.
01:14:55.199 --> 01:15:02.720
And we moved to Toronto and I got became a TD TV addict, but my parents swear it was just uh the commercials fascinated me.
01:15:02.720 --> 01:15:06.079
Commercials, I come running in the room, watch the commercial, and run back out again.
01:15:06.079 --> 01:15:11.119
And by the time I was 12, 1965, my dad said, That's a problem, lad.
01:15:11.119 --> 01:15:12.800
You're watching far too much television.
01:15:12.800 --> 01:15:14.239
I want you to read some more books.
01:15:14.239 --> 01:15:16.399
That's how we spoke its own back then when I were a lad.
01:15:16.399 --> 01:15:17.840
I could switch it on and off.
01:15:17.840 --> 01:15:18.720
I still can.
01:15:18.720 --> 01:15:21.840
So it's uh, I want you to read some more books.
01:15:21.840 --> 01:15:22.720
I said, get me some.
01:15:22.720 --> 01:15:25.439
So he took me to a Coles bookstore in Toronto, which doesn't exist anymore.
01:15:25.439 --> 01:15:26.399
It was a chain.
01:15:26.399 --> 01:15:28.560
And he said, Any book you want, you can have.
01:15:28.560 --> 01:15:29.920
And it was Walter B.
01:15:29.920 --> 01:15:31.199
Gibson, who was a magician.
01:15:31.199 --> 01:15:32.960
It was called The Key to Hypnotism.
01:15:32.960 --> 01:15:41.039
And I was like, oh I memorized the content and I learned what was essentially a braid induction, staring at something, in this case a coin.
01:15:41.039 --> 01:15:44.399
But there was a variant on it called Hypnosis for Difficult Subjects.
01:15:44.399 --> 01:15:46.079
And I just thought, okay, here's the easy way.
01:15:46.079 --> 01:15:48.960
Let's presume everyone's a difficult subject and use that one all the time.
01:15:48.960 --> 01:15:51.039
It seemed to make sense to a 12-year-old boy.
01:15:51.039 --> 01:15:53.600
I went next door, two kids, Max and Wayne Gibbs.
01:15:53.600 --> 01:15:56.560
Wayne I reconnected with a decade ago, hadn't seen him since then.
01:15:56.560 --> 01:15:59.439
And um, Wayne was about 10, Max is about eight.
01:15:59.439 --> 01:16:01.119
So to Max, it was a big joke, joke.
01:16:01.119 --> 01:16:07.039
I went to hypnotize him, got Wayne in a trance immediately, and his hand was cataleptic.
01:16:07.039 --> 01:16:08.960
And I pushed um a pin.
01:16:08.960 --> 01:16:15.039
It was either a hat pin or a safety pin, I can't remember which, through the flash, like not through the skin, but through the flesh of his middle finger and out the other side.
01:16:15.039 --> 01:16:20.399
And he said looking at it, and it's bleeding, and he's absolutely emotionless, no, no blink reflex, nothing.
01:16:20.399 --> 01:16:22.079
Somnambulism, bang, right away.
01:16:22.079 --> 01:16:24.560
So my first patient zero was a good one.
01:16:24.560 --> 01:16:29.439
And I just kept playing around with it uh for years, and I was about 18, 19.
01:16:29.439 --> 01:16:41.039
Then in in November 1974, as a 21-year-old man, I went and saw the amazing Creskin do his hypnosis, he called it power of suggestion, and um Mentalism Act in Toronto at Minkler Auditorium.
01:16:41.039 --> 01:16:46.239
Saw that in November, said to my friend who was a booking agent, I think I can duplicate almost everything he's doing.
01:16:46.239 --> 01:16:46.960
He went, What?
01:16:46.960 --> 01:16:47.439
Show me.
01:16:47.439 --> 01:16:48.399
So I went into his work.
01:16:48.399 --> 01:16:54.079
It's called Music Shop International, it's a booking agency, uh, demonstrated for the agents some of the stuff I could do.
01:16:54.079 --> 01:16:59.520
And then January 1975, January 29th, I did my first event, which was a TV show in Edmonton.
01:16:59.520 --> 01:17:00.399
They flew me out.
01:17:00.399 --> 01:17:02.880
I was on with Cab Callaway, the jazz singer.
01:17:02.880 --> 01:17:04.640
And it was just, it was fantastic.
01:17:04.640 --> 01:17:05.520
Had a blast.
01:17:05.520 --> 01:17:10.880
The bug bit that I was a telephone operator at the time earning $2 an hour, which put me below the poverty line.
01:17:10.880 --> 01:17:13.760
I was working in an office with over 100 women, which was great.
01:17:13.760 --> 01:17:14.960
I was the only guy.
01:17:14.960 --> 01:17:19.520
And uh if I hadn't lived with my parents, it would have been, you know, I would have starved to death.
01:17:19.520 --> 01:17:21.760
But I kept doing shows and it just took off.
01:17:21.760 --> 01:17:25.760
And I I didn't know anything about hypnosis outside of that book.
01:17:25.760 --> 01:17:43.039
But I found I had a knack for it and um maybe some of the theatrics in it as well, and did almost uh close to 5,000 shows in three continents and retired after 43 years, then retired from doing my corporate speaking engagements about three years after that, and now it's just teaching.
01:17:43.039 --> 01:17:57.439
We've taught nine, about 9,000 people in person, twice a year at the Ontario, at our Toronto home, which is you know the Hypnotic World Epicenter, Toronto, Canada, and once in Las Vegas, we go there for Hypnoths Live, have a blast there.
01:17:57.439 --> 01:18:10.479
But mostly our stuff is online now, and we take people who are complete beginners or psychiatrists, psychologists, medical doctors, pain management specialists, and turn them into excellent general practitioners so they can then decide what they're gonna do with it.
01:18:10.479 --> 01:18:17.039
So I've eaten, lived, breathed hypnosis since 1975, and that's since it's been full-time.
01:18:17.039 --> 01:18:17.840
50 years.
01:18:18.159 --> 01:18:19.520
Amazing, amazing.
01:18:19.520 --> 01:18:26.560
So let me ask you some rapid fire questions about meaning.
01:18:26.560 --> 01:18:32.239
So my first question is this is sentence completion.
01:18:32.239 --> 01:18:39.600
According to me, Mike Mandel, the meaning of life is wow, variable.
01:18:41.439 --> 01:18:42.800
It's context-driven.
01:18:42.800 --> 01:18:43.439
There you go.
01:18:43.439 --> 01:18:44.960
We're back to context-driven.
01:18:44.960 --> 01:18:45.439
Nice.
01:18:45.439 --> 01:18:49.680
Well, it's like it's like you get discussions with people about just about anything.
01:18:49.680 --> 01:18:52.800
And what I always say is everybody has a worldview.
01:18:52.800 --> 01:18:53.760
Everybody does.
01:18:53.760 --> 01:18:56.960
It may be Marxism, it might be atheism, it might be capitalism.
01:18:56.960 --> 01:18:58.800
In my case, I have a biblical worldview.
01:18:58.800 --> 01:19:02.800
I'm a Presbyterian elder, I was a licensed minister in in Ontario before.
01:19:02.800 --> 01:19:08.880
Got a left foot of fellowship for pretty well accusing them of heresy, but that was just me.
01:19:08.880 --> 01:19:14.960
But I just explained, you know, I I I never shove my Christianity down anyone's throat, but I explained, that's essentially what I believe.
01:19:14.960 --> 01:19:19.680
Everyone has a worldview, and you have to determine if it is working for you and if it makes sense for you.
01:19:19.680 --> 01:19:23.520
And our worldview is going to determine everything that's going on in the world.
01:19:23.520 --> 01:19:28.560
I a very good friend of mine contacted me three days ago and he said, I'm just terrified because of the U.S.
01:19:28.560 --> 01:19:29.039
elections.
01:19:29.039 --> 01:19:32.079
He honestly thought he was going to be put in a concentration camp or something.
01:19:32.079 --> 01:19:34.720
And I said, Well, we'll wait and see.
01:19:34.720 --> 01:19:37.680
I specialize in being apolitical.
01:19:37.680 --> 01:19:41.760
And uh I have essentially no control over what's going on in the world.
01:19:41.760 --> 01:19:45.680
So I sort of observe, I notice we seem to be living essentially the Chinese curse.
01:19:45.680 --> 01:19:47.600
May you live in interesting times.
01:19:47.600 --> 01:19:49.439
These times are really, really interesting.
01:19:49.439 --> 01:19:51.600
And I said, But I have a biblical worldview.
01:19:51.600 --> 01:19:56.560
I look at everything in terms of seeing how things are playing out in terms of Bible prophecy.
01:19:56.560 --> 01:20:01.039
And I like looking at the world through that lens, which keeps my faith high because it's certainly happening.
01:20:01.039 --> 01:20:04.239
And um it's just that's my context.
01:20:04.239 --> 01:20:06.159
That's my lens I look at everything through.
01:20:06.159 --> 01:20:17.840
But Derek Bomber, my mentor, Cambridge linguist, NLP trainer, who I did my NLP trainer track with, which was a two-year course, he said everyone should have three models of the world, minimum.
01:20:17.840 --> 01:20:18.800
And I thought, why?
01:20:18.800 --> 01:20:22.960
And he said, because if you have only one model of the world, you have no choice.
01:20:22.960 --> 01:20:26.319
And we work on the maximum that choice is always better than non-choice.
01:20:26.319 --> 01:20:30.720
And then he said, but if you have two models, now you're in a dilemma, this one or this one.
01:20:30.720 --> 01:20:35.439
Ah, you're the you know, the donkey stuck between two piece piles of hay, which one do I eat?
01:20:35.439 --> 01:20:36.239
I don't know, no, no.
01:20:36.239 --> 01:20:43.680
But he said, if you have at least three, one of the models will tend to jump out as being most appropriate regardless of what you're doing.
01:20:43.680 --> 01:20:52.560
So I've got my my biblical worldview, I've got my um scientific worldview, and I've also got hypnosis to fall back on.
01:20:52.880 --> 01:20:53.840
Amazing.
01:20:53.840 --> 01:20:56.640
Um, second question.
01:20:56.640 --> 01:20:59.600
The most meaningful thing I did yesterday was.
01:20:59.600 --> 01:21:01.439
Oh, good question.
01:21:01.680 --> 01:21:11.520
Um probably vacuuming, even though I'd done it two days earlier because my wife had asked me to, and I realized we got people coming over, and in her mind, the place is filthy.
01:21:11.520 --> 01:21:18.399
So the meaning, the meaning was me doing this is reframing it as it's not something that's gonna take an hour out of my day.
01:21:18.399 --> 01:21:21.039
This is something that's strengthening my marriage by doing it.
01:21:21.039 --> 01:21:21.760
Beautiful.
01:21:21.760 --> 01:21:22.079
Wow.
01:21:22.079 --> 01:21:24.960
And we can attach positive meaning to all kinds of things.
01:21:24.960 --> 01:21:29.760
I, you know, it's the beautiful thing is Scott Adams wrote a great book on reframing.
01:21:29.760 --> 01:21:31.439
And he's a hypnotist.
01:21:31.439 --> 01:21:36.479
Not just the guy who writes Gilbert, but he's a hypnotist, and he's he's a very smart man.
01:21:36.479 --> 01:21:39.520
He's he clearly has a very high IQ.
01:21:39.520 --> 01:21:47.039
And his book on reframing is terrific because he's made the discovery you don't even have to believe a reframe for it to work.
01:21:47.039 --> 01:21:52.720
And I used to get, you know, my wife and I have been married since 1981.
01:21:52.720 --> 01:21:53.840
Yeah, it's a long time.
01:21:53.840 --> 01:21:59.680
And I jokingly still refer to her as my first wife or my current wife, you know, keep her on edge, but she's sharp as a tack.
01:21:59.680 --> 01:22:03.680
And um, I realized like things that used to irritate me.
01:22:03.680 --> 01:22:07.600
Why doesn't she get just and she's thinking probably the very same stuff about me?
01:22:07.600 --> 01:22:09.359
Why is he being such an idiot?
01:22:09.359 --> 01:22:15.199
But I stopped framing things as, oh, this is an unimportant part of the conversation.
01:22:15.199 --> 01:22:17.359
Why does she bring up things that don't matter?
01:22:17.359 --> 01:22:22.640
And I reframed all of that as my wife is the love of my life.
01:22:22.640 --> 01:22:25.520
And man, oh man, did that ever change everything?
01:22:25.520 --> 01:22:34.560
The meaning in everything then became my definition of love, which is putting the well-being and happiness of someone else above your own.
01:22:34.560 --> 01:22:35.279
That's real love.
01:22:35.279 --> 01:22:40.720
It's not a feeling, feelings follow later, which is why so many arranged marriages work really well in those cultures.
01:22:40.720 --> 01:22:47.600
They meet, they commit to each other, they have family support, they don't give up, and then the love follows, the feelings follow.
01:22:47.600 --> 01:22:50.960
But love is an action and reframing things.
01:22:50.960 --> 01:22:58.159
It's been a wonderful journey because I I had such a freaking ego problem for years.
01:22:58.159 --> 01:22:59.039
I mean, I really did.
01:22:59.039 --> 01:23:04.239
And I'm not saying it's completely gone, it probably never will be, but it's it's a lot better than it was.
01:23:04.239 --> 01:23:12.640
And I realized that I wasn't serving myself or anyone else by being an egotistic jerk.
01:23:12.640 --> 01:23:13.760
It really wasn't.
01:23:13.760 --> 01:23:17.199
It's people a lot smarter than me have done a lot more with their lives.
01:23:17.199 --> 01:23:22.640
And I went to Hypnothoughts live the very first time with Chris Thompson, my business partner and best friend.
01:23:22.640 --> 01:23:25.199
And I went with the attitude, why are you dragging me to this?
01:23:25.199 --> 01:23:27.600
Every hypnosis trainer I've seen is a freaking idiot.
01:23:27.600 --> 01:23:29.520
I might have used more colorful language.
01:23:29.520 --> 01:23:31.199
They're living in the dark ages.
01:23:31.199 --> 01:23:32.479
Why don't people move on?
01:23:32.479 --> 01:23:34.640
And he said, let's just go give them a chance.
01:23:34.640 --> 01:23:36.720
And the first trainer we saw was terrible.
01:23:36.720 --> 01:23:38.399
Her induction took 40 minutes.
01:23:38.399 --> 01:23:40.399
I think it just really bad.
01:23:40.399 --> 01:23:41.520
So I said, prove my point.
01:23:41.520 --> 01:23:43.119
He said, just stick it out.
01:23:43.119 --> 01:23:51.119
And we met some phenomenal trainers, people like David Snyder, Melissa Tears, James Trump, Carl Smith, who are close personal friends now.
01:23:51.119 --> 01:23:58.960
And I really believe everybody has something to offer if we listen, if we listen for their story.
01:23:58.960 --> 01:24:07.119
Everybody may be, you know, a diamond in the rough, but we can get to that gym if we really listen and put ourselves out of the way.
01:24:07.119 --> 01:24:08.960
And God knows I'm not there yet.
01:24:08.960 --> 01:24:13.600
I mean, I'm certainly not there, but I've stopped competing with the other trainers.
01:24:13.600 --> 01:24:22.079
I yeah, now I go back, and what Chris and I do is we applaud all the other trainers because Zig Ziggler, the motivational speaker, said a really profound thing.
01:24:22.079 --> 01:24:24.640
And even Freddie Jackwins adopted it since I told him.
01:24:24.640 --> 01:24:26.239
I always credit source when I can.
01:24:26.239 --> 01:24:33.840
Zig Ziggler said, you can get anything you want out of life if you help enough other people get what they want.
01:24:33.840 --> 01:24:35.600
And man, is that ever true?
01:24:35.600 --> 01:24:40.399
There is a reciprocity that happens with you, call it providence, the Tao, karma, whatever.
01:24:40.399 --> 01:24:48.720
And when we just put our stuff out there and help people without expecting anything in return, it really does all come back on us.
01:24:48.720 --> 01:24:50.079
So we've stopped competing.
01:24:50.079 --> 01:24:52.159
We help our friends, they say, can you do this with it?
01:24:52.159 --> 01:24:52.479
Sure.
01:24:52.479 --> 01:24:54.000
You know, you want to be on our podcast?
01:24:54.000 --> 01:24:54.399
Absolutely.
01:24:54.399 --> 01:24:59.760
I never say no to a podcast unless they have, you know, unless they're Satanists or something, but they don't ask me to go on anyway.
01:24:59.760 --> 01:25:02.720
But yeah, we put it out there, we give back.
01:25:02.720 --> 01:25:05.920
And on that note, something wonderful has happened lately.
01:25:05.920 --> 01:25:12.800
And I went to Wexford Collegiate, which is an art school, performing arts and visual arts, as well as a high school.
01:25:12.800 --> 01:25:14.800
And um, I was a bright kid.
01:25:14.800 --> 01:25:24.079
I skipped from grade four, that's grade three to grade five, but was put in a mix five, six class with a sadistic teacher who expected the grade fives to work at grade six level, make his teaching easier.
01:25:24.079 --> 01:25:29.920
I've now gone effectively from grade three, A plus and everything, to grade six, bombing out.
01:25:29.920 --> 01:25:33.439
And he he almost gave me a nervous breakdown as a little kid.
01:25:33.439 --> 01:25:36.800
And my parents finally got me out of the class, and I hated school now.
01:25:36.800 --> 01:25:39.439
And I failed grade nine, failed grade 11.
01:25:39.439 --> 01:25:43.039
I spent years trying to learn, and I eventually got out.
01:25:43.039 --> 01:25:46.000
My parents put me in a hippie free school called West No Hunt.
01:25:46.000 --> 01:25:48.319
I was the only Gentile in an all-Jewish school.
01:25:48.319 --> 01:25:49.439
They were great to me.
01:25:49.439 --> 01:25:51.359
Basically, you become an autodidact.
01:25:51.359 --> 01:25:53.520
It teaches you to teach yourself anything you want to learn.
01:25:53.520 --> 01:25:54.800
And that's what I did.
01:25:54.800 --> 01:26:09.039
And began learning this stuff and just recognizing if we if we treat life as magnificent and possibilities, options, and help other people get dragged into the backwash of that as well.
01:26:09.039 --> 01:26:12.800
It really gives us good lives and we can lay the ego aside.
01:26:12.800 --> 01:26:14.960
It doesn't become important anymore.
01:26:14.960 --> 01:26:18.079
Whereas, you know, that's what we can direct people to the other people.
01:26:18.079 --> 01:26:20.079
I say, you know, Freddie is great at this stuff.
01:26:20.079 --> 01:26:22.159
Go go check out his training.
01:26:22.159 --> 01:26:27.840
So all of that to say we are continuously growing and changing, or at least changing.
01:26:28.239 --> 01:26:32.960
I love that answer, and I'm gonna go back and listen to that carefully.
01:26:32.960 --> 01:26:34.800
There's so much in what you just said.
01:26:34.800 --> 01:26:38.640
Um, we're just gonna do a couple more questions and bring this, land this plane.
01:26:38.720 --> 01:26:49.039
But that there was a lot of-Just before you do, I missed one part there, which is at my high school, where this all began, my wife and I set up the Mike Mandel Performing Arts Award this year.
01:26:49.039 --> 01:26:58.399
It's a cash prize for a student chosen by their by their peers who exhibits camaraderie, intelligence, talent, all of these things in the performing arts.
01:26:58.399 --> 01:26:59.600
And we've got it in my estate.
01:26:59.600 --> 01:27:00.399
It'll run for 20 years.
01:27:00.399 --> 01:27:02.079
Beautiful full circle story.
01:27:02.079 --> 01:27:09.359
It's it's a blessing, but it's such a blessing to me that the stage I started on is where I got to deliver the prize to this kid.
01:27:09.359 --> 01:27:10.960
Um, you know, Miles Jordan.
01:27:10.960 --> 01:27:11.520
Beautiful.
01:27:11.600 --> 01:27:13.680
So you've delivered your first prize?
01:27:13.680 --> 01:27:14.399
Yeah.
01:27:14.399 --> 01:27:14.800
Yeah.
01:27:14.800 --> 01:27:15.920
That must feel amazing.
01:27:15.920 --> 01:27:17.039
It's just wonderful.
01:27:17.039 --> 01:27:24.079
So if uh next question, if I come to you and I say, Mike, I feel like I don't matter, my I'm this little speck.
01:27:24.079 --> 01:27:28.800
And uh what do you do if I come to you with sort of a meaning existential crisis?
01:27:28.800 --> 01:27:30.000
What's your approach?
01:27:30.319 --> 01:27:32.479
I use my two Jedi questions.
01:27:32.479 --> 01:27:36.479
The first one is, how did you come to believe that you don't matter?
01:27:36.479 --> 01:27:37.920
And I'd use their exact words.
01:27:37.920 --> 01:27:38.960
I'm not interpreting.
01:27:38.960 --> 01:27:41.199
I'd use some clean language to unpack what they're saying.
01:27:41.199 --> 01:27:44.159
So it's how did you come to believe that you don't matter?
01:27:44.159 --> 01:27:46.880
Not no, I'm saying belief, questioning it right away.
01:27:46.880 --> 01:27:49.439
And then when they tell me, I say, well, how do you know it's true?
01:27:49.439 --> 01:27:50.960
I want the epistemology here.
01:27:50.960 --> 01:27:55.520
I want their evidence criteria, and then I'll start challenging it, challenging that belief.
01:27:55.520 --> 01:28:01.279
I had one client years ago, and he told me, uh, he said, I do a bit of bodybuilding, he said, I do this.
01:28:01.279 --> 01:28:03.600
He said, if he didn't like me, he was going to throw me out the window.
01:28:03.600 --> 01:28:05.199
I didn't know that at the time.
01:28:05.199 --> 01:28:06.560
We were on the ground floor.
01:28:06.560 --> 01:28:13.119
And as a as a jujitsu instructor, he might have discovered it was more difficult than he imagined, but he said, I can't do anything.
01:28:13.119 --> 01:28:14.640
I'm I'm only a jack of all trades.
01:28:14.640 --> 01:28:17.760
I can do a bit of carpenter, I can do a bit of pool, I can do a bit of bodybuilding.
01:28:17.760 --> 01:28:18.720
And he was just down on himself.
01:28:18.720 --> 01:28:20.159
He said, I'm no good at anything.
01:28:20.159 --> 01:28:21.680
I'm just a jack of all trades.
01:28:21.680 --> 01:28:22.560
I said, You're right.
01:28:22.560 --> 01:28:23.840
You're no good at anything at all.
01:28:23.840 --> 01:28:25.199
He said, I can't master a thing.
01:28:25.199 --> 01:28:26.479
I said, No, you can't.
01:28:26.479 --> 01:28:29.199
The only thing you've mastered is being a jack of all trades.
01:28:29.199 --> 01:28:32.159
And he just went, and his face flushed.
01:28:32.159 --> 01:28:32.640
That was it.
01:28:32.640 --> 01:28:33.520
That was the entire treatment.
01:28:37.039 --> 01:28:47.359
Most meaningful work of art that I've seen in the last week could be music or painting or a play or TV or sis.
01:28:48.399 --> 01:28:49.520
My wife bought me this.
01:28:49.520 --> 01:28:51.840
This is an original oil painting.
01:28:52.079 --> 01:28:53.039
Um Wow.
01:28:53.039 --> 01:29:01.840
So this is a bear with an arrow, sort of uh He's got a quiver of arrows and he's overlooking this vast domain with mountains and stuff.
01:29:02.159 --> 01:29:02.960
I'm gonna put it here.
01:29:02.960 --> 01:29:04.720
Uh my wife bought me that.
01:29:04.720 --> 01:29:08.000
And I subscribe to the Enneagram system of personality.
01:29:08.000 --> 01:29:08.960
I'm I'm type eight.
01:29:08.960 --> 01:29:10.880
Type eight is the rarest number.
01:29:10.880 --> 01:29:12.960
At our best, we're the white knights.
01:29:12.960 --> 01:29:19.680
We protect the puppies and the little girls and the abused, and we're the firefighters who run back into burning buildings when there's bombs that can go up.
01:29:19.680 --> 01:29:22.079
But at our worst, we become the mass murderers.
01:29:22.079 --> 01:29:25.600
We're the ones who go crazy in them all with a, you know, the shotgun or something.
01:29:25.600 --> 01:29:27.039
So I'm not at that end of it.
01:29:27.039 --> 01:29:28.239
Type eight is the boss.
01:29:29.039 --> 01:29:29.920
What is the type eight?
01:29:30.479 --> 01:29:30.720
No.
01:29:30.720 --> 01:29:33.279
It's sort of the protector.
01:29:33.279 --> 01:29:34.319
Okay.
01:29:34.319 --> 01:29:36.640
Yeah, and that's how Heather saw that picture.
01:29:36.640 --> 01:29:38.479
It's actually called the Protector.
01:29:38.479 --> 01:29:40.479
And so she said, This is you.
01:29:40.479 --> 01:29:43.760
And it it made me cry when I saw it because that's what I want to be.
01:29:43.760 --> 01:29:46.159
I want to, I want to help people live good lives.
01:29:46.159 --> 01:29:49.680
I want people to thrive and have a great.
01:29:49.680 --> 01:29:53.119
So that one I have in my office here, and I just look at it all the time.
01:29:54.079 --> 01:29:55.680
I'll ask another question.
01:29:55.680 --> 01:29:59.840
When I'm dead and gone, the thing that I most want to be remembered for is.
01:30:04.000 --> 01:30:09.199
When I'm dead and gone, the thing I want to do that I tried to be a good man.
01:30:09.199 --> 01:30:11.600
My father's standard was so high.
01:30:11.600 --> 01:30:13.920
He was so open to things.
01:30:13.920 --> 01:30:18.319
When he discovered I had gifts in hypnosis, he would have loved for me to be an engineer like him.
01:30:18.319 --> 01:30:21.840
But he said, son, he said, I don't care if you want to collect garbage.
01:30:21.840 --> 01:30:23.840
He said, if you're happy, I'm happy for you.
01:30:23.840 --> 01:30:29.840
And that was the best piece of wisdom because it freed me to do whatever I wanted with his support the whole way.
01:30:29.840 --> 01:30:31.279
I'd love to be support like that.
01:30:31.279 --> 01:30:32.399
How old were you when he said that?
01:30:32.720 --> 01:30:33.439
There's a lot of my students.
01:30:33.439 --> 01:30:36.560
How old were you when you said how old were you when you said that?
01:30:37.279 --> 01:30:41.279
Probably uh early 20s, maybe 21, just when it was starting.
01:30:41.279 --> 01:30:43.760
And there's a lot of my students, I'm Uncle Mike to them.
01:30:43.760 --> 01:30:52.159
They call me Uncle Mike because I had great courtesy uncles who were terrific to me and stretched my mind and got me to do things I wouldn't have done.
01:30:52.159 --> 01:30:53.760
And I like to be that for people.
01:30:53.760 --> 01:30:58.880
I'm a I'm a surrogate father for another one of my students because her father treated her like crap.
01:30:58.880 --> 01:31:02.800
And I don't do anything big, it's just they know I'm there for them and they can always come to me.
01:31:02.800 --> 01:31:04.640
And not having kids, it makes it easy.
01:31:04.640 --> 01:31:06.800
I'm more of a father to my cat, my Egyptian mal.
01:31:07.600 --> 01:31:32.000
Well, you've been really helpful to me in terms of reframing my personal approach to each day, the way I ask questions, the way I set intentions, the way I don't really watch TV anymore, and follow my curiosity and your model of just learning whatever, learn, learn art, learn, you know, follow your interests, and it all will pay off.
01:31:32.000 --> 01:31:37.760
It's been really inspiring, and I really appreciate you being with me now.
01:31:37.760 --> 01:31:43.279
Is there any anything we didn't cover or any last messages you would like to share?
01:31:43.279 --> 01:31:44.640

But um, our aim is to help people replicate excellence.
01:32:11.760 --> 01:32:13.199
That makes me happier than anything.
01:32:13.439 --> 01:32:14.640
I really appreciate you.
01:32:14.640 --> 01:32:16.800
This has been such a great conversation.
01:32:16.800 --> 01:32:18.880
Peace and love, my friend.
01:32:18.880 --> 01:32:20.880
All right.
01:32:20.880 --> 01:32:23.680
Thank you for listening.
01:32:23.680 --> 01:32:25.600
I hope you enjoyed that interview.
01:32:25.600 --> 01:32:27.199
I sure did.
01:32:27.199 --> 01:32:30.159
There's so much packed in there.
01:32:30.159 --> 01:32:36.640
What what a cool, fun, interesting, generous, and nice guy.
01:32:36.640 --> 01:32:45.039

01:33:16.399 --> 01:33:22.319
I'm gonna talk to music therapists, art therapists, people who do therapy with using animals.
01:33:22.319 --> 01:33:26.960
We're gonna look at meaning from a lot of different perspectives.
01:33:26.960 --> 01:33:32.079
Until next time, I hope you have a meaningful, meaning-filled month.
01:33:32.079 --> 01:33:36.079
And if you figure out the meaning of life, let me know.
