Romans 12:9 (CSB) — “Let love be without hypocrisy. Detest evil; cling to what is good.”
In Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, Scrooge is a miserable man. He loves money more than people. He has little compassion for the poor. Everything about his life says, “I care about me.”
But by Christmas morning, Scrooge is a different man. Dickens doesn’t just tell us that Scrooge has changed. He shows us.
The man who was greedy becomes generous. The man who pushed people away seeks them out. The man who was indifferent to suffering begins caring for people in need.
A transformed heart produces a transformed life.
And that’s what Paul is showing us in Romans 12. In view of everything God has done for you, your life should begin to look different—not because living differently earns God’s mercy, but because you have received God’s mercy.
Hypocritical love asks, “What can I get from you?” Sincere love asks, “What would be good for you?”
Where does your love need to move from saying nice things to genuinely seeking someone else’s good?
Father, thank you for the mercy you have shown me in Jesus Christ. Forgive my selfishness and hypocrisy. By your Holy Spirit, make the change in my heart visible in the way I love others. Amen.
