► Tell us about you and your podcast
Adulting Decrypted is hosted by a Dad(Roscoe) and his three sons(Ashton(23), Gideon(15), and Gene(18)). We cover all the topics that young adults need to know in order to be successful for life. Are listeners are those young adults looking for help with lives many challenges.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
We have a lot of family dinners together and one evening, Roscoe mentioned that an Ivy League school was offering adulting classes. A class where students would pay large amounts in tuition to learn what most of society treats as common sense. We thought the idea was silly and that young adults should have access to those lessons for free. So after that conversation we set out to help the young adult population via a podcast. As a family that grew up playing improv games for fun on weekday nights we are natural entertainers and are very comfortable talking with each other. We released our first episode on April 15th 2020. That episode was released only a month after the shows conception.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We release episodes weekly in seasons of 18 episodes. It normally takes us three weeks or less to produce podcast episodes. The podcast is incredibly valuable to us so planning it into our schedules has become a priority. Often weeks get busy and we almost miss a recording session. But we are always willing to do all that it takes to record. We spend around 20 hours a week minimum on the podcast and it is all presently self funded.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We would enjoy having sponsors but at the moment, simply getting the message out there is the most important thing. Currently we get around 300 downloads a month including in the off season. Podcasting is teaching us a lot and is allowing us to affect many peoples live's in an incredibly positive way.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
All of our creation work is in house. Ashton is the producer of the show and he has a background in audio editing and production. We find guests through people who reach out to us and through our own personal connections. We first find what we think will be most valuable for our audience. Then we spend time researching that topic, researching the experts who are willing to help share the message and then we record. We love to interview guests both in person and via Zoom. Whichever suits them best.
► How do you market your show?
Most of our listeners come from Spotify and Apple podcasts. We find using social media is the most useful way for us to find more listeners who need our message.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
The biggest thing that we have learned so far is how incredibly valuable our time together is. And much of our individual life philosophies have changed because of the things we have learned from our guests. The most helpful resource for podcasting we have to offer is Grow the Show, by Kevin Chemdlin. That guy knows what's up.
► Where can we learn more about you & your podcasts?
You can find us anywhere by simply googling Adulting Decrypted. That is also the name of all of our social profiles.
