► Tell us about you and your podcast
After more than two decades of working with accounting professionals to help them start and build their bookkeeping, accounting, and tax businesses I felt now was the time to give back to the accounting community and the podcast was the best platform to do so.
Each week I interview the experts to share insights that owners of accounting businesses can use to have the premier accounting firm in their area. On the show, we range in topics from marketing, selling, pricing, services offered, onboarding and retaining clients, tech stacks, to mental health.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
To start, for years I've been told I have the voice for radio so when podcasts became possible the opportunity was something I eventually knew I would do.
After some prodding and when I felt I had a topic I could commit to I was ready to start. Initially, the podcast was part of our "Give Back" initiative which soon evolved into a great platform to connect with, educate, and inspire our audience. We are now considering ways to monetize the show which now is a loss leader in our business model.
To start, it was advised we first record 10 episodes before going LIVE. So beginning in the fall of 2019 we started and went LIVE in March 2020, which was the perfect time to start, oh the pandemic.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Funding, what funding? Well, it's self-funded. Let's just say that for the foreseeable future, the podcast has been an expensive labor of love. That said, after 3 years we have seen signs of indirect revenues or sales that we can attribute to the show. For now, that is our first sign of a financial win.
Initially, this took more time than it does now. Today is a Thursday commitment and then our producer and VA take it from there. For me, I've seen it as part of my job or duty so it fits well with my role as president of the company. Having the podcast has provided a platform to be the expert and voice in the accounting community.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Currently, we have no sponsors and no revenue to directly attribute to the show. We see the podcast as another way to boost credibility, position us in the market place and give back to the accounting profession.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
Zencastr
Shure Mic
Libsyn
We hired a producer to set up and edit each episode and a VA to write the episode descriptions and publish and promote the shows on social media. I do have guests on the show. Once a month we record LIVE in a studio to also get video shorts for promotions but the other 3 episodes are remote and audio only which we record on Zencastr.
► How do you market your show?
Marketing, great question. I feel like we are continually throwing mud at the wall. I wish we had a better understanding of how people find the show but we are heavily on Linkedin, Facebook and Instagram. We do promote the show on our website and in our newsletter but that is more as if we are speaking to the choir.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Do it. Have guests on the show. Become a great interviewer. Higher a producer.
I do listen to podcasts related to the industry.
Podcasting Made Simple.
Also attended the Podcast Movement Conference in 2023 and will be attending it again in Aug 2024.
