► Tell us about you and your podcast
The Cricket Badger Podcast sees cricket broadcaster James Buttler chat about all aspects of the sport with high profile guests from world cricket.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I love podcasts and love cricket. I'm a genuine cricket badger (obsessive) and like nothing more than talking about the sport with players, coaches and those around the game.
It made sense as a broadcaster to start recording those chats and turning them into podcasts. 137 episodes later I've had a great time and I really enjoy getting messages from listeners telling me they enjoy it too.
I like listening to other pods and stealing their best bits :)
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
The pod is usually once a week but the Covid-19 lockdown has led to many more! I always have time to talk cricket so that has never been an issue.
I've funded the podcast myself but as it has grown I am pleased to have secured a sponsor and that has enabled me to invest in some tech which has taken the quality up a level.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I am always interested in hearing from potential sponsors and advertisers. 15,000 downloads a week means it has become far more attractive for advertisers now and that means I can plough more effort into producing the podcasts.
The Cricket Badger Podcast is my baby. I am very protective of it and love that it is increasingly successful.
The benefit of being a cricket badger is that the love for the sport will never change regardless of how many people listen to it.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I have worked in sport for a long time and built up a decent contacts list which makes sourcing guests much easier. People in cricket are 99.99% lovely people and happy to give up their time.
Interviews are conducted over various communications platforms or in person.
► How do you market your show?
The pod is on all major podcasting platforms and hosted on Audioboom.
On Twitter the @cricket_badger feed is my main tool, although facebook and Instagram are growing quickly.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
The best thing to do is podcast about what you know and love. If you do that it never feels like work.
And seek advice from others. I made mistakes early in the learning process and other people can often help you avoid them and/or spending money on things you really don't need.
► Where can we learn more about you & your podcasts?
