► Tell us about you and your podcast
I started my podcast to help me find my voice. It really chronicles my journey into the comedy world. I have a drink (or 2) and also love to chat with comedians, authors, musicians and experts in any topic in an attempt to learn and laugh.
My listeners are mostly either comedy “nerds” or people who just enjoy good and authentic conversation.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started this podcast to help me find my comedic voice. Due to a “midlife” crisis, I committed myself to making a career in comedy. After writing screenplays it was recommended I start doing standup and a podcast. After many months of writing and planning, I finally started doing standup and my podcast in early 2021.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
It isn’t easy to find the time to do a podcast, but I’ve been able to consistently do one episode a week, usually with a guest. But there are times when I’ll do a solo episode. It takes commitment to stay consistent. But ultimately if you want to do a podcast, I think the best thing to do is just start it, and stop making excuses like I did for several months. It is not expensive to get started. My first solo episode was recorded only using my iPhone.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I’ve gained a lot of experience in finding my comedic voice by doing my podcast. But I’ve also made connections and friends from my podcast. I currently have only one sponsor, that pays around a penny per listen and I’ve made enough to pay for some of the equipment I had purchased for the podcast.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I use a laptop, microphone and my phone for the recordings with guests over Zoom. I find guests in several ways. There are some sites where you can specifically look for people looking to get onto podcasts. Sometimes I’ll email someone specific that I want to talk with as well. It takes hours to find and book guests. I typically will spend at least 2-8 hours researching and preparing for the interview as well, depending on the guest. I’ve done one in person interview thus far, and the others were all over Zoom.
► How do you market your show?
I need to improve my marketing for sure. But for now I promote it on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Have a goal in mind. If you just want to grow an audience, have a plan to do that. If you want to produce great content and don’t care about how many people listen, invest in that process. If you just want to have fun - have fun!
