► Tell us about you and your podcast
Hello, my name is R.L. Malpica and I'm the host of Minds Like Minds Podcast. I'm a conscious freethinker who's been guided to share my knowledge in religion and consciousness along with my experience with mediation and mental health to the world. My co-host, Deshun the Definition, is on a similar journey. He's a world traveled personal chef who's passion for spiritual and individual growth has inspired him to share his thoughts.
Minds Like Mine's Podcast promotes thought provoking discussion about consciousness, spirituality, metaphysics, social issues and mental health awareness.
Our listeners are freethinkers, truth seekers and the consciously aware.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
Deshun and I would talk about religion, spirituality and mental health literally every day and our discussions became therapeutic to both of us. At one point, the lightbulb went off.. why don't we start a podcast?? I created a name and logo.. recorded our first show in September of 2019.. and the rest was history.
I'm a huge fan of podcasts. Always have been. There's something intimate about listening to someone's thoughts as opposed to watching them.
Our initial goal was for the podcast to be therapy for both of us. As we continued dropping episodes and live podcasts, the show took an energy of its own and we quickly realized, this is more than just a hobby.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We shoot a live podcast on facebook every wednesday night and release the ep for streaming and YouTube the following Thursday. I'm the main producer and it takes me about an hour to edit and export the show.
I allocate time each day for the podcast and the goal is always to do at least one thing every day to push the show forward. As far as funding, it's all funded by myself and my monthly costs are roughly $50-$75 a month. That includes the broadcasting platform, marketing and the host.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We do not currently have a podcast and the revenue is put back into the show. Podcasting has expanded my reach as a spiritual logician and given me the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I use ECAMM software for my broadcast. Final Cut Pro X for my editing. An AOKEO mic and Skype for my guests. I have a Panasonic GH5s as a camera.
Our guests come from our reach.. we reach out to individuals that match up with our philosophy through social media.
As far as preparation, we have brainstorming meetings every monday night and talk daily about content. I set up the broadcast the day of the show and make sure the sound and video is right.
► How do you market your show?
For marketing, I have a private group on facebook that consists of my core following. They're able to interact with the live show. In addition, we use instagram and facebook as the main marketing stream. Most of our listeners listen on Soundcloud and Youtube. To me, facebook is the most reliable because it gives the podcaster the most options.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Patience.. if you're trying to do this full-time, you have to be patient. It takes time. The key is to do something every day.. even if it's as small as sharing a post or doing some research. Do something every day to push your show forward. Don't get discouraged by a lack of listens/downloads.. they'll come as long as you continue to show the same passion from your first episode to your 50th.
As far as resources, I'd encourage all new podcasters to research editing and marketing. First impressions are so important.. make sure you show sounds and looks good. Make sure your marketing material stands out.
