► Tell us about you and your podcast
Hey! We are Kitty James and Francesca Coates hosting The Dump Him Podcast! We are two 20-something year olds and have been best friends for nearly 10 years. We met whilst at a British boarding school and have had to say 'just dump him' way too many times to each other.
We talk all things modern day dating (yes those apps), knowing your self-worth, and when you should just dump him, her, or them.
Our listeners range from young girls wanting to learn more about dating and themselves, to men who are learning how not to get dumped, to married women with children who love hearing about dating in the modern day.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
We both listen to a lot of podcasts ourselves (shout out The Receipts podcast and My Dad Wrote a Porno) and always voicenote each other to discuss things. We hadn't seen each other for a while during the UK Lockdown in 2020 and the voicenotes were getting longer and longer to which we said to each other 'why is this not a podcast?'
We wanted to start this podcast to help young girls going through what we had. I think it is safe to say that we would both love to have known what we know now 5 years ago so if we can help someone else out and not make the same mistakes that we did then it's a win-win!
We started the podcast at the beginning of July 2020 when we were allowed to leave our houses again although since Lockdown 2.0 in the UK, we have learnt now with online calls that this was never really essential!
We recorded the episode on the Friday, announced it on social media that same day and then released it on the Sunday, so not long! However we have now learnt that have a few already uploaded and then launching is a better idea but never-mind - win some you lose some!
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We release a new episode every week and it takes us about 1hour30mins to record and 2 hours to edit.
We find time because we love it! It is our weekly catch up that just happens to be recorded so it is not a burden to us luckily.
We spend about £60 on hosting, £120 on equipment and about £60 on marketing. We run all our own social media channels and website hosting so we get to save money there. We do fund it but would love to at some point get a sponsor onboard so we can branch out a bit more.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We have done some paid promotional work which has been a lot of fun but in terms of a full on sponsor we do not have one.
Podcasting has been amazing. We really open ourselves up to the world and frequently describe it as a therapy session that can be heard globally! I really enjoy it, sharing experiences, meeting new people, having guests on, hearing exclusive stories for the first time, the whole thing is great and I wouldn't change it for anything!
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We use Buzzsprout and Audacity to edit and upload.
We find guests through people we already know, suggestions from others or through social media platforms.
We prepare about an hour before the episode in a rushed manner!! Although not ideal, it means it is fresh and we haven't pondered the ideas too much so you get our true, honest and unfiltered responses on the topics.
We have done both - interviewed guests in real-life and on Zoom.
► How do you market your show?
It seems most find us through our social media channels or word-of-mouth. I did an interview a few weeks ago for my business and there was a scary realisation moment where she suddenly realised she recognised me and had actually listened to the podcasts after it came up on her recommended!
I believe 60% from Spotify and 40% Apple Podasts/iTunes.
Instagram and Facebook.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Just start it! Bite the bullet and go for it because we could have started ours a lot earlier. Don't be scared to put yourself out there, reach out to people and don't expect a reply (then it will always be better if they do!!) Feel free to DM us or send an email if you want any specific help.
