► Tell us about you and your podcast
After many years of listening to content from great people I decided to pair my love for how people have gotten to where they are in life and overcoming adversity that we all face.
I run a financial planning practice and own a rental real estate company. Now thanks to ListenNotes and the great guests on my podcast I have reached a top 2% podcast in the world.
The podcast is about how fascinating people got to where they are at. When we are living our life we very rarely realize how pivotal moments are while they are happening. However, in hindsight we look back and can connect the dots of how pivotal a moment truly was and how that lead to where we are at now.
What I love about the podcast, Who Knew In The Moment?, is that it isn't for any one specific genre it is for everyone. As you hear other folks stories you can relate and apply how they overcame downturns or sidetracks to get to where they are.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
One day I was driving with my friends Jason and Rebecca to Colorado asking him questions. His wife asked "Have you ever thought about starting a podcast?" This prompted me to create a goal of starting a podcast and releasing 14 episodes my first year. In my first year I will release 90 episodes.
I think podcasting is one of the greatest ways to connect with people. In a world of digital you can truly connect with people you may have otherwise never met.
My goal was to help people reflect on their stories and see how pivotal moments while they are happening are never things that stand out. However when we look back and connect the dots we can see how pivotal those moments were. As listeners hear this I think it helps make those that are very successful in their respective fields didn't know right away that they were embarking on this multi million dollar success.
I started my podcast in December 2020.
It took me 2 hours. I didn't focus on what I didn't know. I focused on what I did know. I didn't have a lot of knowledge on how to do it but I decided to just start and I knew the rest I could learn.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I release episodes on Tuesday's and Friday's. I started releasing one episode per month, then one time per week and now twice per week. This was because it was gaining momentum and I had more episodes recorded than I could release.
I MADE time. As mentioned above, I have two full time jobs above so I just spent time on nights and weekends recording and editing. To produce an episode between research, recording, and posting it usually takes me 6 hours per episode.
I was strategic to do it during my nights and weekends. It caused me to say no to things I wanted to say yes to but it wasn't as important of a yes as producing my podcast was.
I fund this out of my cash flow. I will say I have not spent thousands of dollars on equipment I spent money on the essentials and have decided to expand as I go. i think too many times people feel like they need to spend a lot of money upfront.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I gain the connections and relationships from podcasting. I have cultivated great friendships and relationships from podcasting. I have also grown as a person. It has helped me refine my speaking skills, my research, and broadened my mind to what is possible.
I have not done any sponsorships yet not because there have not been offers but because I haven't found the right partnerships. My goal has always been what benefits can I provide others. There are many times where people have said I am so glad I listened to your podcast because now when I went through a very similar situation I knew how to overcome that situation.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I use a high class microphone, a lighting camera, and my laptop. It truly is that simple :) I send a Zoom link to my guest and we record virtually. This allows me to connect with a much wider range of people.
I prepare for each episode by doing a lot of research on each guest. I want to know my guest's story almost as well as they know their story. This allows us to have great conversations opposed to me asking them to share their story.
I send a Zoom link and then I use that clip to cut for social media posts and also to upload for video content. I then take the audio link and upload that to Anchor to get released to the different platforms.
► How do you market your show?
I strictly market on social media. I use Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat and LinkedIn. I think if you are going to have a guest asking them to promote on their social platforms as well.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Start and don't overthink it. You can get caught up in having the perfect gear, strategy, and content. The reality is you will have to adjust the length of episodes, questions you ask, and content based on listenership. Always ask for feedback from your circle. Sometimes it will be good and implementable, other times they will give you feedback and it may not be relevant. You want to have a pulse on what the listeners think. Listen to your own episode. I quickly realized how frequently I used certain words over and over haha.
Do not come in thinking that you are going to be competing with Joe Rogan and his podcast. Do look for trends: what episodes were listened to or downloaded more than others. What content did you go over in that episode?
