► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Sam, I am a Fantasy Football and Football enthusiast. I run a solo podcast called Sounds Like Sam. I use this podcast mostly as an outlet to share my opinions on fantasy football, but I also have posted other audio pieces on there as well.
My listeners are fantasy football enthusiasts and football fans that just want to hear what I have to say regarding fantasy football.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started this podcast because I always enjoyed listening to things other than music in the car and I was looking for an avenue to share my thoughts and feelings regarding fantasy football. Helping people and giving them advice is something I've always enjoyed doing too.
I started my podcast 3 years ago. I've kept it going for the same reasons I've started it, which were to share my opinions and to connect with people about something I was passionate about.
It took me around 2 months to get the courage to start my podcast and really share my thoughts, but I feel like I have definitely come a long way from where I've started.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
My goal has been to release at least 1 episode per week throughout the NFL regular season. So starting a month before the season started, by the end of the year my goal will be to publish and release somewhere around 22 episodes this season.
I've spent around $50 on equipment. I got a Blue Microphone as a birthday gift, but I've spent money on a headset and some other equipment I use to produce the podcast. I fund tand market this podcast entirely by myself. In the past I've soley been doing email and social media marketing, but I would really like to grow my podcast further so I'm still looking into ways to gain more of a following and help more people out.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I have a sponsorship from Anchor which pays me $0.01 (1 penny) per listen as well as a fantasy website called Bullseyefantasyfootball.com.
I get around 200 downloads per month.
This podcast has benefited me just by gaining experience in an industry I'm interested in, it's helped me put myself and my opinions out on the internet and has gave me more confidence in myself and in my abililty to think on my feet, not get flustered, as well as improve my communication with others on and off record.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I use Blue Microphone when podcasting as well as some recording headset I found online. But other than that I record all my episodes through the Mac Photobooth app, upload it to anchor.fm, add in some background music that I like (compton), and then give a description and publish the episode.
I have done a good job of simplifying the process. I could obviously go even further and edit my episodes, but lately due to time constraints I try not too because I am forced to fix my mistakes on the fly, as well as think on my feet. Not only that, but I feel like my confidence with what I said has improved drastically as well as the show itself. I truly feel like You get to hear the true Sam speak when I don't edit it, and it just sounds more real and in the moment which I kind of like. So even though I might make some mistakes, forget some things or do other things wrong. When I publish without editing you get a true sense of who I am and get to see my thought process as I express my thoughts.
I will say the one thing I do like to do is outline in writing the main points or key things I want to address in the episode, so reading stats or knowing specific matchups does take a little over 20 minutes of prep to really help me during the recording session.
► How do you market your show?
I use email marketing or just post a link on my twitter site, IG page, facebook page, or pinterest account.
The one I have found the most useful has been the Instagram page. Definitely get the most traffic through that platform and I get by far the most questions from there as well even though I always ask people to ask me through twitter lol.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
My journey has been short so far, but what I have learned is to just be yourself and stick to what you want to put out there. You also want to make your show easy to listen to so "ums" "likes", and "uhs" need to be said little to zero times during the episode in order for people not to get annoyed.
Also, definitely make content that people would be interested to listen to.
The best podcast resource for me was taking a class at community college on it and just listening to other successful podcasts. Reading blog posts doesn't hurt either.
