► Tell us about you and your podcast
My courageous guests and I get into the harsh realities of facing the most challenging times of our lives through real experiences, passion, and courage. They each have found a way to move forward to new and exciting possibilities! You name it, we’re talking about it!
Whatever you’re going through, one of my guests just might be the change agent you need to help you catch that wind!
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I am about to begin our third year Taking the Helm. I started the podcast after I was challenged by a professional speaker to interview him. At that time, though I was moving into the speaking world, but loved this introduction to the world of podcasting. Two months later, I launched my first "real" episode with a goal of giving people a voice to share their personal stories of triumph.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I have a process that works very well for me. My guests come to me by referral and I have them booked months in advance. I start with a "get to know you" call so I can confirm they "fit" my mission and purpose. We also agree on our main talking points so I can do my research. I publish Taking the Helm in video on my Youtube channel and in audio. All in all, with editing, promotion, and marketing, each episode takes about 5 hours from start to finish.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I welcome sponsorships. I use Anchor as my main platform, which currently does not offer sponsorships to Canadians. Hence, I have been seeking out my own and have several posted on my webpage currently. I have just released the podcast to new platforms such as iHeart Radio and Audible.
I thoroughly enjoy the collaboration and friendships I now have with people around the world, many of them past guests. It truly has been inspiring meeting so many who have overcome the darkest and most horrific experiences.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I tape using Zoom and upload the episode to Filmora for editing purposes. I also have already recorded the advertisement or sponsor for that week, which will be embedded in the middle of the interview with music and an image/video in the background. Once the edit is done, I export the video. It is then uploaded to Anchor where the audio is extracted. I also add it to Youtube with full podcast notes and SEO functionality.
► How do you market your show?
I am active on most social media platforms. Each guest has three "spots" for promos of their episodes. I post a video on Mondays and an audiogram on the day of the podcast release. It is also shared in my newsletter a month later. Of course, guests are tagged and expected to share as well.
I have just recently reached out to Anchor Support and discovered that I had not "claimed" my podcast on other platforms. Based on the information in Anchor alone 61% of my listeners are in Canada, 41% listen on Apple, 83% are female, and most listen on their phones. This is outside of Youtube of course.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
I have written an ebook myself to help those who want to be guests on podcasts and don't know where to start. I offer it to every one of my future guests.
First and foremost, be sure to have high-quality, proper equipment before you begin as a podcaster and find a coach who can lead you rather than fumbling along the way.
