► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is, formally, Armando Lopez. I am a wanderer and student of life. Which is a really nice way of saying that I'm not entirely sure of what to do with, or am doing with my life. But like a student, I am always learning. And attempting to grow from the experiences I encounter.
The name of my podcast is 'Gh3tto8uddha's Pod', and it is about all the randomness that comes into mine and my guest's minds. Although I do try to focus on nerdy stuff including, but not limited to; anime, video games, and music genres of a less known kind.
I appear to have listeners from all over the world, much to my confusion. As far as from what walks of life they may come, I can honestly say that I have no idea. I've attempted to have some kind of direct communication with them through social media as mentioned in some of my episodes. But as no kind of contact has been made, I've since just kinda stopped trying and just do my thing.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I got into podcasting as a result of a former co-worker, turned friend, giving me the suggestion that I make a YouTube Channel or something along those lines. And since podcasting was free and I had the equipment to do it, I figured "what the hell" and just went with it. I do not listen to podcasts, nor did I in the past. I don't even listen to my own after they've been recorded. I might jump onto one here and there for mainly quality control reasons, but other than that? Nah.
My initial goals were simply to speak my mind, and see if anyone was interested in my thoughts. This seemed to be the case when I noticed that I actually began to get downloads on my first few episodes. My motivations have varied over time, but as of now they consist of, to quote a friend when telling me why I should keep going when I become depressed and hopeless: "letting others know that they're not alone when it comes to some of the stuff going through their minds, and to teach alternative ways of thinking." Or something along those lines.
I started on this strange journey about 2 years ago, I think maybe about to hit 3? Thanks to my homie who pushed me into doing it in the first place!
My first episode didn't take very long (a few days after the initial recommendation?) to release once I figured out my shtick. To be myself. Which included my enjoyment of inebriation. Which, has become the very basis for mostly all of my episodes. We're just guests on this planet, and I'm staying for the open bar (borderline alcoholism is something I have struggled with throughout my life, and therefore do not joke about it with disregard to this very real issue that many people deal with on a daily basis).
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I try and make an episode at least once a week. Usually coincides with my days off from work in an attempt to use my rests, and drinking, as productively as possible. And since there's really no editing at all, once the conversation has been had? It's straight to file conversion and uploading within the hour.
I only spend what I can as far as the Podbean services go when it comes to bandwidth allocation and such. Wanted to make sure there wasn't a limit to how many times people could download my episodes within an allotted time once I noticed I was beginning to develop some kind of following.
And yes, I fund this podcast. Along with some help from a fellow artist by the name of Crystal Olivares, also known as SerenaTheBast!
► What do you gain from podcasting?
As far as I know, there is no revenue to speak of. Do I take sponsorships? Yes, please. No, seriously. I'm not even going to try and be subtle about this. If you're reading this and are interested in sponsoring me and my work, please contact me asap.
I average about 120 downloads a month recently.
As far as how podcasting benefits me? It simply allows me to vent out a lot of internal issues and feelings. Either to whoever is listening, or to my guests. Usually both. I love the conversations I get to have with people because of it. The whole process itself has become a type of therapy almost, in a sense.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I am almost always using garageband for my recordings on an iMac. Don't really know specifics of the gear I use other than my sound monitor, which is a Focusrite Scarlet...something. Not too sure on that either. Also use the podbean app on my phone when I'm feeling curiously chatty and wanna make a "journal entry" of sorts.
Most guests are usually friends and/or family, or people that I meet through friends, work, social media, etc.
There is no preparation. There is only the episode and what becomes of it as the conversation begins, carries on, and ends.
Almost all episodes happen over the phone or instagram calls. A few are in person. I'm prone to whatever the situation calls for.
► How do you market your show?
All my listeners find me on several sources such as iTunes, Spotify, the Podbean app, and apparently miscellaneous streaming services through web browsers (my listener stats on Podbean list is as such)?
Podbean App: 255, 25.89%
Spotify: 219, 22.23%
Chrome: 147, 14.92%
Apple Podcasts: 135, 13.71%
iTunes: 107, 10.86%
Firefox: 36, 3.65%
Just some of my stats.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Just do and speak what you enjoy. I mean REALLY enjoy. If you're not having fun while you're doing it? Stop. Also, breaks are perfectly okay. Just don't do what I have done in the past, and take a break that's so long that you need someone (SerenaTheBast) to come by and kick you in the a** to get you back to work.
Hit me up on Instagram or whatever other social media you happen to run into me on. Really, message me. I'm always up for hearing stories. I may talk a lot, but I am actually a pretty good listener. And just listen to my podcast if you wanna know how it works. Learn by doing. Do by listening.
