► Tell us about you and your podcast
Hi! My name is Adam Buckingham, and I have a day job as a System/Software engineer. My experience in the industry allowed me to work on systems that go into the dark depths of the ocean and travel into the vastness of space.
My podcast, That's Cool News, is a weekly STEM news podcast where I breakdown the positive research, design, and innovation in the field that is making our future bright.
My listeners are anyone who wants to break from all the negative that is normally provided in the news, and wants to hear about all the amazing things that are being discovered from the STEM field.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started the podcast because all the podcasts that I listen to focus on the news itself, even in the STEM field, seem to focus on the negative and I was tired of it. I wanted to provide a podcast where it leaves people hopeful about our future because our lives are constantly improving each year.
My initial goal is to just make someone's outlook on life and the future shift even a little to a more optimistic view.
The big goal is to build a podcast community where professionals and enthusiasts can interact together. Working on projects together, getting feedback on research ideas, and just positive support to people who want to be a part of the STEM field.
Below are the platforms where I am trying to build a community:
FB Group Community: facebook.com/groups/thatscoolnews
Discord Community: thatscoolnews.com/discord
Started the podcast 6 months ago, and have been really enjoying it!
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Post an episode each Monday!
I do have a day job, but I always find time to read STEM news (praise Flipboard!) through out the day when I have a break in what I have to do.
I do fund the podcast myself, and that includes Wordpress Website hosting (Siteground) & podcast hosting (Podbean).
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Currently still a small growing podcast so no sponsorships yet! However, the main benefit is all that I have learned about the podcasting field and the STEM field.
Also I have made some friends along the way with the people I have interviewed on the podcast.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I utilize Audacity as my main editing/mastering tool. It is an amazing piece of software for the free price tag.
Equipment below, FYI these are affiliate links:
Microphone: RE320 (amzn.to/3nFvGuM)
Audio Interface: Scarlett 2i2 (amzn.to/30XxsNV)
Mic Stand: NEEWER Adjustable Microphone Stand (amzn.to/3nEUMtD)
Shock Mount: Koolertron Universal Shock Mount (amzn.to/3lAw0Jb)
I find guests through Instagram, reddit, and any STEM based forums.
I interview guests via Zencastr. Would love to get to the point where I can do interviews in person.
► How do you market your show?
Top 4 Download places:
Apple Podcast: 32%
iHeartRadio: 18.3%
Google: 13.6%
Spotify: 8.1%
I market mostly on Instagram, and the other main social media platforms. Kind of hard to see the conversion rates of those platforms.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
The main thing I learned is that Mastering your Audio can make your podcast sound on a whole nother level.
► Where can we learn more about you & your podcasts?
