► Tell us about you and your podcast
I am a young writer, poet and podcaster, who grew up in Nigeria, Africa. Moving from the streets of Lagos to the capital Abuja, has shaped my thinking and perception of life. One of my biggest fears is to not become a hamster on the wheel just going through the motions of life. Thus, leading to my unlikely quest to discover why we think and act the way we do. I am not a psychologist or psychiatrist, so my discoveries are mostly through my own experiences and the experiences of others. When I am not being 'WEIRD", I am working a 9-5 at an Environmental consulting firm, where I learn how to prevent and alleviate possible environmental and social impacts of Development Projects carried out in my country.
My podcast Unapologetically weird with Tobare, is a podcast for the adults, soon to be adults and those adulting , to remove the stereotypes, unveil the mysteries behind adulting and just live their life as unconventional and unapologetic as possible.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
Podcasting is therapeutic, its like an audio diary, where I can freely express myself without anyone judging me or trying to stifle my thoughts. It brings me so much joy to be able to find others who listen to me and can relate to my struggles and actually find comfort that they're not alone.
I am an avid listener of different podcasts, particularly podcast on self development, Feminine development, mental health, psychology and all round development.
I started my podcast July, 2020. It took me about one week to release my first episode, I was soo nervous but I knew if I didn't press publish no one would ever hear my voice, and so I did. As they say the rest is history!
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Initially, I tried to release an episode every two weeks. however, with the reopening of so many sectors after the initial lockdown I had to get back to my daily routine. I eventually got a Job and this led to me to realistically releasing an episode monthly with bonuses when I can. Due to the nature of my job, I have to wake up in the early hours of the morning between 4-6am, before I start preparing for work. I still live with my parents and this is a convenient time for me to record and also edit with little or no distractions. I currently record on anchor, a free podcasting app, I record and edit with my phone , so apart from internet costs, it is almost at no cost to me. Yes, I fund the podcast myself.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I have not had any sponsorship, although I am currently looking for sponsorship for my podcast. Anchor does not allow me to monetize my podcast so I am desperately looking for other means to monetize my podcast. Podcasting has benefited me in so many ways: I have been able to learn a lot more about myself and others, I have also found comfort in moments when I feel depressed knowing that there's someone listening to me on the other side and can probably relate to what ever I am feeling. One of the most heartfelt reviews I got, was last year when someone listened to my episode on people pleasing, it was so heart warming to find that someone appreciated my ability to be honest and vulnerable. It almost brought me to tears when she said she appreciated my words so much. Days when I feel like no one is listening, I just repeat that voice note and it gives me the strength to go on.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I currently use my phone to record and make use of the anchor app's editing tools to edit my podcast. I find guest for interviews from old friends and fellow podcasters and entrepreneurs. I interview my guest via Zoom or Phone call.
► How do you market your show?
My listeners can find my show on all available listening platforms, I share my episodes via Instagram, twitter and WhatsApp. I have found Instagram and WhatsApp to be really useful in marketing my podcast.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
I have learnt that podcasting is a lot more than just creating the episodes, there's a lot of promotion and social media work involved. As creative, I some times find this very challenging but I am learning new tools and skills to be able to promote my podcast better. Such resources that has helped me is really just learning the tricks of the trade from other podcasters, doing research on websites and social media.
