► Tell us about you and your podcast
We are two friends who first bonded over ghostly stories, a caffeine addiction and a love of late 90's/early 2000s TV shows. So we decided to make a podcast all about our favourite things.
Our podcast topics range from cult TV shows, to smutty (woefully written) fanfics, and nostalgic life memories- it‘s all up for discussion. Each episode we trade thoughts over the week‘s chosen topic, threaten to die on hills and delve down into what we loving have titled a 'rant-hole'.
Our listeners are people who like listening to a bit of thematic, light hearted banter, people who binge Netflix and those have a love of trashy teen tv dramas like Gossip Girl and Dawson's Creek.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
We both listen to a lot of podcasts- I think initially we both listened to a lot of True Crime Pods like Crime Junkie, Case Files and My Favourite Murder but our tastes have definitely broadened since doing the podcast. The best thing about podcasting is that we have discovered so many more smaller podcasters though Instagram that I don't think we would have found if we didn't have our own podcast.
The funniest thing is that the podcast sort of happened by accident and it all started with Dawson's Creek. We had both been binging Dawson's Creek on Stan (streaming service) and we would ring each other to rant about certain episodes or plot points and one day we were just like, 'we should make this into a podcast'. And that was pretty much that. We picked a day, recorded an episode (on our phones) and then edited. We googled how to host your podcast on the various platforms, did our logo, named ourselves and that was pretty much that!
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We are completely unfunded and we both work full time so it can be challenging to fit in podcasting around our other commitments. We generally pick a night a week/fortnight and try to record a few episodes at a time and then we share editing and scheduling online content between the two of us. We have spent a bit of money up front purchasing microphones and headphones, and we have spent a bit on social media marketing but we try to keep the costs down. At the end of the day- we podcast because we think it's fun so we try to keep that at the forefront of everything we do.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Podcasting has actually had a great impact on our friendship. We were ex-work colleagues who had remained friends when we stopped working together. We would often collaborate on projects, or help each other out at work so it's almost become this weird extension of that- like a little ongoing project for us to work on. Maybe because we have worked together, it has made the partnership easier in some respects? Like, we already have a good understanding of how each other's brains work so it's easy to work together towards common goals. Plus it's fun. We have a blast recording the podcast so it's really seen our friendship go from strength to strength. As yet we haven't had any sponsorships- although we would be open to it. So I guess, friendship is the main thing we get out of the pod which is 80% cute and 20% corny but we are ok with that!
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We started out travelling to each other's house to film in person but it's about a 50 minute drive each way and after some pretty problematic recording attempts (like one episode where you could hear my dogs fighting in the background the whole time), we switched to online. We prefer Zencastr because we link the file download directly to our google drive. It also gives us two audio tracks so it's easier to edit. Switching to remote recording has helped us to be able to fit in podcasting a little easier around our day jobs too so that is a bonus. To prep for each episode, we basically just know in advance what topic we are covering and so our own prep. And then we have a 15/20 minute debrief about life usually before we record because it's not all business you know!
► How do you market your show?
Most of our listeners are on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. We have intentionally listed the pod on as many platforms as possible but those are the most popular ones. You can find us on Instagram or Facebook in terms of Social Media. We have found connecting with other podcasters to be one of the best ways to get the podcast our there and also consistently uploading episodes. We are honestly still working out the marketing side of it and we are always open to advice or tips!
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
We kind of built the plane as we were flying it. I think we were just so excited to podcast that we jumped the gun a bit. In hind sight, it would have been more beneficial for us to do some research ahead of time- for example, bulk recording and releasing a bunch of episodes as our podcast 'launch' would have been better than what we did, which was just releasing one episode at the beginning. To be honest though, because we are doing this for fun- success is just an added bonus. We didn't think anyone would listen to us but here we are and people ARE listening to us. And telling us how much they like the podcast. So our advice would just be to have fun, love what you're podcasting about and then it really shines through in your content.
